2024 Jane Eyre Pinot NoirTasmania, AUSTRALIA$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2025-2033)ABV: 13.5%Closure: StelvinA wonderfully fresh, pure and powerful Pinot that has a long moreish red fruited finish.
Sourced from vines with an average age of 30 years old with 20% whole bunch inclusion and maturation taking place in French oak puncheons for a period of 10 months.
Semi translucent bright red to dark red colour with black shaded edges and a vibrant crimson red tinged hue. A bouquet of red cherries, violets, strawberries and subtle anise engulfs the nostrils with fresh herb, delicate forest floor and spicy cedar notes also evident. The uber delicious palate is layered with ripe red cherry, strawberry and red liquorice fruits which are both expansive and supple in their flow. Infusions of fresh herbs, forest floor and spicy cedar extend across the back half. Wonderfully fresh, pure and powerful it has velvety tannins and a long moreish red fruited finish.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.
Alc. 13.5%Other Reviews….
From three sites in the north; this was fermented with native yeasts, then aged in French puncheons for 10 months. The Jane Eyre signature of fragrance and clarity is here, wedded with the intensity that Tasmanian pinot can often yield. Dark fruits are joined with the red, with black and red cherries, redcurrant, rosy-pink florals, some warming spices, turned earth and sweetly fresh forest floor note that will no doubt build intriguingly with tertiary development. It’s a wine of poise and detail, the palate supple, textural and effortless. Drink by 2034.

2023 Epsilon ShirazBarossa Valley, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$23. 99Bottle$287.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 6 Years (2025-2031)ABV: 14.2%Closure: StelvinRich and succulent yet remarkably fresh with a fleshy mouth feel and long finish.
Epsilon is the project of Aaron and Julie Southern (Julie is a member of the Kalleske clan) who own vineyards in the Northern part of Barossa. As the familiar story goes with so many growers they sold off their fruit to larger wineries until a chance meeting with the Massena boys Dan Standish and Jaysen Collins. Under their guidance they convinced them to start up their own brand in 2004 and build a winery on the property. Maturation takes place for approximately 12 months in new and seasoned French and American oak with only the best batches making the final blend.
Midnight black heart with a bright dark purple hue. Fragrant dark plum, liquorice and ripe blueberry scents evolve out of the glass followed by smoky vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered meat notes. Rich and succulent yet remarkably fresh, the medium to full bodied palate is decorated with dark plum and liquorice fruits which meld into a spicy vanillin cedar, subtle blueberry, fennel and pepper back drop. Fleshy mouth feel with vibrant acidity, polished tannins and a long juicy finish.

2022 Yalumba The Cigar Coonawarra Cabernet SauvignonCoonawarra, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$32. 99Bottle$395.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2025-2033)ABV: 14%Closure: StelvinRich and long with a well fleshed yet grippy conclusion.
Sourced from Yalumba’s famed Menzie’s vineyard, the name ‘Cigar’ is derived from the unique cigar like shape of Coonawarra’s famous terra rossa strip. Maturation takes place in a mix of new French oak hogsheads, barriques and Hungarian oak hogsheads and one year old American oak barriques with balance in older French, American and Hungarian oak for a period of 16 months.
Impenetrable inky black heart with a very deep dark red black tinged hue. Red to black currant, mulberry and red liquorice aromas emanate from the glass followed by some vanillin cedar, subtle earth and bay leaf notes. Rich blackcurrant, mulberry and red liquorice fruits flood the mouth carrying with them medium to full body weight. Excellent concentration and freshness with a sturdy tannin structure lending firmness to the back half. Spicy vanillin cedar, earth and bay leaf accents form across the back half. Long, well fleshed yet grippy conclusion.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.
Alc. 14%Other Reviews…..
Named for the strip of Terra Rossa soils shaped like a cigar that runs through Coonawarra. As it is with the power of suggestion, the Cigar invokes the savoury spices of tobacco, cedar and sandalwood. It's layered with bilberries, blackcurrants and prunes, too. Some coffee and poppy seed tones. It is a wine in the Yalumba line-up that stands out for its heavily laden spices and muscular tannins. Oak is significant and will allow the wine longevity in the cellar. If you gravitate to the seduction of quality fruit and richness of oak, this is for you. Drink by 2034.

A slight change of direction with Cannonball, now mainly a single-vineyard wine at 90/6/4% cabernet/malbec/merlot. This is excellent. It’s a refined, elegant style, almost pared back, with regional flavours of cassis and blackberries, menthol and eucalyptus, lightly spiced and lightly oaked (20% new mostly puncheons and aged 10 months). The tannins are superfine, the acidity light and bright, the palate fuller bodied but not weighty. All in all, a gorgeous drink. Drink by 2035.

The Estate is celebrating its 135th anniversary in 2025, a remarkable achievement, and as part of that, they have introduced a new range, their Old Vines expression (it was not as though they were short of different ranges already, but, as they say in the classics, too much of a good thing is never enough). A 57/43 blend, after basket pressing, the wine matures in French oak for a year and a half. A dark garnet/maroon hue here, with a wonderfully evocative nose. There are notes of dried herbs, aniseed, beef stock, smoked meats, blackberries, leather, aniseed and cold tea. The palate offers focus, concentration and abundant but very fine tannins. Impressive length here and the intensity never wavers from start to finish. There is a touch of vegemite on the palate and it is immediately evident that the oak is immaculately integrated. Expect this to provide pleasure for at least the next ten to twelve years, and for it to improve further during that time. Drink 2025-2037.

JamesSuckling.com - Michel Couvreur Fleeting R Single Malt French Whisky (500ml)Burgundy, FRANCE$220. 00Bottle$2640.00 DozenABV: 49%
There’s been a single cask version or two of Fleeting, but this one is a combination of maturing whisky in two casks types. You'll need a magnifying glass at hand to read the front label, which tells us the liquids spent five years in Oloroso sherry barrels, then six years in old barrels that held fortified Pinot Noir with an outturn of 1800 bottles. Couvreur is known for pulling some stunners out of wine casks, and the very dark purple ruby colour of this bottling anticipates something special. Likely to be a bit porty though not quite as sweet as you might expect. 49% Alc./Vol.

Citing a surge in popularity and supply not meeting demand, in early 2016 Heaven Hill removed Elijah Craig's 12 year old age statement. The core whiskey has since been re-labelled “Small Batch" and at the time of writing is imported into Australia in two variants: One bottled at a proper ABV of 47%, and more recently, this cheaper entry-level edition bottled at a mild 40% ABV. Typically made from a mash bill of 75% corn, 13% rye and 12% malted barley, rumour has it this contains a fair proportion of whiskeys in the 8-12 year old range.

While Glendronach single cask whiskies haven't been explicitly discontinued, they have completely disappeared from the distillery's website. Currently the Australian market has only three lines allocated. It’s said that their rarity is due to limited output and growing demand. That situation is partly due to Glendronach's closure from 1996 to 2002 which impacted the availability of older stock. It would also explain the distillery’s recent re-focus on core range expressions that coincided with a packaging upgrade in 2024. Typically offering outturns of around 600 bottles per cask, the single barrel selections are famous for offering snapshots of a particular cask at a specific point in time making each one unique. The current imports exhibit beautiful deep mahogany colours anticipating whiskies that are layered, lush and decadent - also more intense and expressive compared to major competitors like Macallan. This shipment is an opportunity to secure some Highland classics that otherwise may never have been available in Australia.

2024 Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou Pre-Arrival OfferSaint Julien, Bordeaux, FRANCE$299. 00Bottle$3588.00 DozenClosure: CorkAs a relatively large estate in Saint-Julien, the 75 hectare Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou estate is planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare. They also own a small parcel of land in Haut-Medoc. Changes in the winery, and a greater focus on parcel selection for the Grand Vin has resulted in a reduction in output from around 20,000 cases per year in the 1980’s to around 10,000 cases today. And the wines have never looked better. The pair of 2009 and 2010, along with the 2016 are considered standouts for the region, intense and concentrated efforts that will live for many years to come.
Other Reviews....
The 2024 Ducru-Beaucaillou is showing well at this stage, unfurling in the glass with a perfumed bouquet of dark berries, flowers, gentian and fresh licorice, interwoven with delicate spicy nuances. Medium to full-bodied, layered, and seamless, it is lively and refined, with somewhat firm tannins leading to a gently grippy finish. This was harvested between September 30 and October 15. Drink 2030-2044.

Yohan Castaing - Wine AdvocateThe 2024 Ducru-Beaucaillou is a sleek, elegant wine. Silky tannins give the 2024 its distinctly mid-weight, lithe personality. Readers will find a gracious Ducru built more on persistence and nervy tension than size or opulence. Blue/black fruits, lavender, cloves, menthol and chocolate open over time. It will be fascinating to see how this ages. Drink 2034-2054.

Zekun Shuai - JamesSuckling.comAs to the Grand Vin, the 2024 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is based on 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot, resting in 100% new oak. Its deep purple hue is followed by a terrific 2024 that defies the challenges of the vintage. Pure cassis, darker currants, graphite, crushed stone, and sappy violet notes all emerge on the nose. It's medium-bodied, with a beautifully layered, concentrated mid-palate, ripe yet velvety tannins, and a great finish. This classic Saint-Julien will benefit from bottle age and is another brilliant effort from the team. It's one of the richer, more structured wines in the vintage, yet it remains balanced, precise, and never overdone.

Jeb DunnuckLovely aromatics on the nose, deep vivid purple. Floral scents and lots of Cabernet markers, dried mint, clove, aniseed and blackcurrants. Cool and crunchy straight away, this has a gorgeous smooth texture with ripe and concentrated fruit. I like this, it feels restrained and not overdone with a silky fruit profile and firm but fine tannins. There's a softness to this and a long length with a push of flavour. It has a deep, dark fruit aspect - not too sharp or sour, balanced in terms of acidity and fruit with wet stones, graphite and liquorice on the finish. Elegant and enjoyable. 3.8pH. 2024 Chateau Leoville Poyferre Pre-Arrival OfferSaint Julien, Bordeaux, FRANCE$160. 00Bottle$1920.00 DozenClosure: CorkChateau Leoville Poyferre is part of the trio of properties formed when the large 200 hectare Leoville estate was divided in 1840. Seen as the most plush and exotic of the group, Leoville Poyferre has also been the most consistent since 2000. While much of the plantings are intermixed with those of Leoville Las Cases, the Grand Vin comes from a total of 60 hectares, and is planted to 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. The estate also produces a second wine, Pavillon de Leoville Poyferre, along with the previously unofficial second wine Moulin Riche which comes from a dedicated 21 hectare plot.
Other Reviews....
Offering up aromas of jammy berries and toasty oak, the 2024 Léoville Poyferré is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Medium-bodied, dense and blocky, it's firm, tannic and chewy, with some green characteristics vying with its creamy patina of new wood. Harvest took place between 24 September and 10 October, and some lots saw some reverse osmosis.
89-91 points
William Kelley - Wine AdvocateThe 2024 Léoville-Poyferré was picked from September 24 to October 10 at 26.42 hl/ha. There was some reverse osmosis on the Merlot and Cabernet Franc varieties. Quasi-Pauillac in style, it offers quite backward black fruit, hints of melted tar and graphite on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied and quite succulent with fleshy ripe tannins, tobacco-laced black fruit, brown spices and light undergrowth. With a fine supple landing on the finish in typical "LP" fashion, this constitutes a delicious, early-drinking Poyferré that will be more approachable than other vintages. Drink 2028-2050.

It's appropriate that the Tessendier brothers selected their local apéritif as the support here, as they are firstly producers of premium Cognac. Just a few months in x-Pineau des Charentes casks has added secondary notes of dried apricots, wild honey and cinnamon to the cereal character of the whisky. The flavours complement the malt, becoming better defined and juicier through the finish. Loaded Barrel Butterscotch Single Malt Australian Whisky Liqueur (500ml)Melbourne, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$58. 99Bottle$707.88 DozenABV: 22%Loaded Barrel's latest offering sees natural butterscotch flavours blended with their four-year-old single malt. The result may not be as complex as traditional Scotch Whisky liqueurs, but it avoids the intense sweetness of butterscotch schnapps. Shaken well before tasting (as per the producer's recommendation), the nose feels moderated by the base spirit. It's sweet, with tooth-coating butterscotch and milk chocolate flavours, yet it retains a lightness that allows the sugars to 'breathe', extending the palate length and avoiding the clunky, cloying character typical of the category. A one-trick-pony, but in the context of dessert liqueurs, this is a success. Even if you don't have a sweet tooth, one taste shouldn't be out of the question. 22% Alc./Vol.

Park VS Carte Blanche Cognac (700ml)Cognac, FRANCE$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 40%Cognac Park is the premier brand from Distillerie Tessendier, a Borderies-based house established in 1880. Today, fourth-generation brothers and Master Blenders, Lilian and Jérôme Tessendier run the show. Not limited to blending, they also distill from their own 60 hectare estate and buy around 40,000 hectoliters from winemakers, maintaining relationships that span several generations. The entry-level VS is a 50/50 marriage of Fins Bois and Petite Champagne cognacs aged for a minimum of three years, but most of it is closer to six. The goal was to create an "energetic Cognac" that grants bartenders 'carte blanche’ to use it as they wish in cocktails, however, it feels like what they’ve made here would be quickly lost in mixing. Tasting it on its own is essential. The first pass elicits pure, floral-soft aromatics, coaxing out scents of ripe pears, apricots and citrus blossom. That soft touch is echoed on the palate which is restrained, elegant and less overtly fruity than many a VS, also impeccably pure. Dried fruits, poached quince, dry triple sec and lingering wisps of passionfruit in the lengthy rebound make this very classy, understated VS seem out of place in its classification. Highly recommended. 40% Alc./Vol. Tasted from 50ml sample.
Notes from the producers... Menthol, linden blossom, apricot, banana, pear, ginger, dried fruits, pepper (pink), lychee, orange zest, and white flowers.

2024 Chateau Giscours Pre-Arrival OfferMargaux, Bordeaux, FRANCE$125. 00Bottle$1500.00 DozenClosure: CorkChateau Giscours in Margaux has been making wine in the region as far back at the 1300’s, but it’s only recently that they’ve earned a reputation for outstanding wines. Extensive replanting of the vineyards and a change in composition to include more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend has resulted in wines truly reflective of the appellation. Another technology pioneer in the region, Chateau Giscours was one of the first to use gravity to move wine in the cellars. While this practice is common now, it was unique in the 1800’s. They were also one of the first to use optical sorting of the grapes, another common tool used more widely today.
Other Reviews....
The 2024 Giscours has turned out very well indeed. Offering up incipiently complex aromas of dark berries and cherries mingled with orange zest, licorice, violets and burning embers, it's medium to full-bodied, with good density and richness, with a layered, rather muscular palate and a long, expansive finish. The 2024 is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. The estate retained cover crops to amplify the dry conditions in July and August, accelerating ripening, and once again picked by vine age within blocks, bringing in the younger-vine fruit earlier before it could rot. Merlot came in between 19 and 28 September, and the Cabernet Sauvignon was picked very late, between 1 and 11 October.

William Kelley - Wine AdvocateThe 2024 Giscours is impressive. Elegant and sleek, with fine balance, Giscours is all class. The bouquet alone is so enticing. Small red berry fruit, spice, tobacco, mint and cedar are all finely sketched in a mid-weight, nervy Giscours that is quite showy right out of the gate. There is a bit of edginess in the tannins, but that's not anything that can't be addressed with élevage. A closing burst of aromatics leaves a long-lasting impression. Tasted three times. Drink 2032-2044.
93-95 points
Antonio Galloni - VinousA fresh and vivid red, showing blackcurrants, herbs and hints of needles and dried flowers. Medium-bodied. Nicely chewy tannins extend to the medium-long finish, which is bright, firm and linear. A Giscours that shows the elegance and balance of the vintage. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 31% merlot, 6% cabernet franc and 3% petit verdot.
94-95 points
James SucklingBased on 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot, the 2024 Château Giscours offers beautiful darker currants, cassis, and violets intermixed with classy oak notes. Medium-bodied and nicely concentrated on the palate, it offers elegant tannins, beautiful balance, and impressive length. The harvest was very late here, and it shows in the depth and concentration of the wine.

Jeb DunnuckA little shy on the nose, needs some coaxing, blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry fruit. Dried flowers, roses, violets, milk chocolate, creamy. Lovely texture on the palate, filling and round, plush and gently firm. Grippy but not overdone. Some enjoyable austerity but the structure is there and this has mouthwatering acidity. Dried herbs, mint, salty stones, tobacco and some dried spices. Well built with a sense of character. 3% Petit Verdot completes the blend. Ageing 50% new oak barrels. 3.71pH. Tasted three times. A yield of 35hl/ha. Drink 2028 - 2043.

2024 Chateau Canon Pre-Arrival OfferSaint Emilion, Bordeaux, FRANCE$240. 00Bottle$2880.00 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
The 2024 Canon is shaping up brilliantly, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet cherries, blackberries and raspberries mingled with notions of rose petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with tangy acids (the pH is a very low 3.35) and ultrarefined tannins, it concludes with a long, mineral finish. A blend of 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc, it's the estate's first year of organic certification.
93-95 points
William Kelley - Wine AdvocateThe 2024 Canon is superb. One of the standouts of the vintage, the 2024 possesses striking mid-palate depth to match its vertical personality. Chalk, white pepper, mint, lavender, rose petal, slate and blue/purplish fruit all stain the palate. There's gorgeous depth and density here, and yet the 2024 remains a super-classic wine from the property. This is a real stunner. That's all there is to it. Tasted four times. Drink 2034-2059.
95-97 points
Antonio Galloni - VinousStructured, balanced and textured, it has aromas of red berries and pine needles. It’s medium-bodied with velvety tannins. Rather seamless. Long, juicy finish with salty limestone undertones.
95-96 points
James SucklingThe Grand Vin 2024 Château Canon is 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc that will spend 16-18 months in 49% new oak, with a small amount in foudre. Black raspberries, graphite, crushed stone, and violet notes all define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied, fresh, has a vibrant, layered mouthfeel, and a great finish. It's a classic Canon with its minerality, focused, elegant mouthfeel, and outstanding length. Tasted multiple times with consistent results.
94-96 points
Jeb DunnuckBeautiful fragrance on the nose, really alive and forward, roses, purple flowers and red berry fruit. Lifted and intense with a real push of cherry and strawberry fruit. So clean, pure, lively and tangy, the acidity and fruit is really at the fore here. Tannins are almost subtle, gently giving frame while the minerality adds an extra layer of complexity on the finish. I love this because it’s playful, really not serious, harmonious and full of flavour. Juicy, alive and mouthwatering. Such a great wine and one where you really can't taste the difficulties of the year in the glass. Crystalline and pure, elegant and super charming. Ageing 49% new oak barrels, 6% foudres for 16 to 18 months. 3.35pH.A yield of 45hl/ha. Drink 2030 - 2045.

A blend of 63.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 0.5% Cabernet Franc, the 2024 Rauzan-Ségla offers up aromas of minty cassis, pencil shavings and cigar wrapper, followed by a medium-bodied, soft and pillowy palate that's supple and open-knit, concluding with a melting, discreetly herbal finish.
89-91 points
William Kelley - Wine AdvocateThe 2024 Rauzan-Ségla is magnificent. One of the top wines of the Left Bank, Rauzan-Ségla possesses tremendous textural density and mind-blowing balance. Dark fruit, lavender, spice, licorice and new leather are all dialed up in a potent, layered Margaux that offers stunning harmony and incredible purity. At this stage, Rauzan-Ségla is one of the wines of the vintage in Bordeaux. Elegant yet powerful, the 2024 is simply magnificent. Tasted four times. Drink 2043-2054.

It brings another level of density as well as finesse. Ripe black cherries, cassis, graphite, spring flowers, and beautifully integrated oak all define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied, with solid mid-palate depth, ripe tannins, and outstanding length.

Jeb DunnuckCherry stone on the nose, rose, violet, strawberry and red cherry. Chewy and well textured, filling but gentle, the tannins are exceptional and the freshness is so well balanced with the fruit. So sophisticated, confident, smooth and utterly compelling. I love it, round, soft with lifted acidity that gives the tang with some liquorice on the finish. Energy and focus with real succulence. Still not a big wine, but this has plenty of style and refinement and a feeling of happiness about it. 0.5% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. 2024 Chateau Pavie Macquin Pre-Arrival OfferSaint Emilion, Bordeaux, FRANCE$125. 00Bottle$1500.00 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
The 2024 Pavie Macquin offers up attractive aromas of raspberries, violets, rose petals and spices, framed by a discreet 45% new oak. Medium to full-bodied, ample and pure, it's built around a tangy, somewhat assertive spine of acidity that lends this wine an angular, edgy profile. Of course, that may integrate with additional élevage.
88-90 points
William Kelley - Wine AdvocateThe 2024 Pavie Macquin is positively gorgeous. Silky, layered and voluptuous, the 2024 is so impressive right out of the gate. Plush contours wrap around a core of purplish fruit, lavender, licorice, spice, menthol and chocolate. All the signatures of this site come through loud and clear. Savory and floral notes supported by clean veins of salinity extend the persistent finish. Pavie Macquin shows what was possible in 2024. The choice to harvest everything in October (from the 3rd to the 8th) paid off big time. Aging is in French oak, with about 15% in larger 500-liter barrels, 45% new wood overall. Tasted three times. Drink 2034-2054.
94-96 points
Antonio Galloni - VinousWhat a bright, racy wine showing beautiful chalky tannins and mid-palate fruit of good density. Minerally, with blue and red fruit. Taut on the palate, with a medium to full body supported by tense, chalky tannins. The long and really succulent finish goes on for a while. Precise. 84% merlot, 15% cabernet franc and 1% cabernet sauvignon.

Zekun Shuai - JamesSuckling.comIncorporating slightly less Cabernet Franc than usual, the 2024 Château Pavie Macquin checks in as 84% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, resting in 40% new barrels, with 10% in larger barrels. It has a classic Pavie Macquin nose of dark cherries, cassis, graphite, and spring flowers, with a subtle, cooler-toned edge that always seems to come through from this terroir. This carries to a medium-bodied Saint-Émilion with a focused, nicely structured, balanced mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and juicy acidity that carries through the finish. It's a beautiful, vibrant 2024 and one of the few in the vintage that's going to really benefit from bottle age. Tasted multiple times with consistent results.

Itinerant Spirits Gallivanter Wild Botanical Gin (700ml)Ballarat, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$74. 99Bottle$899.88 DozenABV: 42%Weighs in at just above 40% ABV but delivers a generous gin bouquet of mixed citrus, dried herbs (tarragon, sage?) followed by crushed pine buds and bush pepper. Creamy, accessible entry develops to a medium to full bodied middle, repeating those piney-juniper accents with spikes of pepper and a vibrant lemon-thyme finish. Lots of personality on its own, this should equally lend itself to mixing. 42% Alc./Vol. Batch #5 tasted.
Notes from the producers... A juniper-forward gin with big citrus hits of creamy lemon, mandarin, and grapefruit up front are rounded out with aromatic pepper. Fresh citrus notes from the inclusion of Lemon Drop Wax foraged from the Grampians region is balanced with sweetness and warm spice, giving this gin a well-rounded mouthfeel and smooth after taste.

2017 Promontory Proprietary RedNapa Valley, California, UNITED STATES$1999. 00Bottle$23988.00 DozenClosure: CorkFrom the Harlan family, one of the most respected names in Napa, Promontory represents a singular vision: to express a completely distinct, previously undeveloped territory on the western edge of Oakville. Discovered in the 1980s but only launched as its own estate in 2008, the vineyard sits on dramatic terrain, far removed from the valley floor and carved by geologic fault lines. The site’s complexity, elevation, and isolation set it apart from anything else in the region, and the team behind Harlan Estate and Bond have spent years unlocking its potential with patient, detail-oriented farming and restrained winemaking. This is not just another Napa label, it’s a project that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible from the region.
Other Reviews....
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Promontory has a wonderfully fragrant nose of baked blackberries, plum preserves and black currant pastilles with an undercurrent of star anise, violets, espresso and tilled earth. Medium to full-bodied, it is soft-spoken and elegantly styled in the mouth, featuring skillfully managed, grainy tannins and bags of juicy black fruits, finishing long, earthy and remarkably energetic. This is certainly among the most profound of the 2017 Napa Cabernets and for followers of this vineyard, not one to be missed. Drink 2024-2054.
97 points
Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2017 Promontory is vibrant, focused and bristling with energy. Bright red-toned fruit, spice, crushed rocks and flowers convey energy, with floral notes that continue to open with aeration. This is an especially mid-weight, nervous vintage for Promontory, and yet all the elements are so well balanced. The 2017 is going to be a spectacular wine, in a number of years. This is one of its best showings. Drink 2025-2042.

Antonio Galloni - VinousBlackcurrant, tar, lead pencil and dark fruit. Full-bodied with resin, dark-berry and redwood undertones and firm, fine tannins. Salty. Leaner than some, but so long and bright. Vertical elegance here. Needs three to four years to soften and open.

James SucklingShowing consistently, the 2017 Promontory has to be one of the greatest 2017s from Napa out there. Showing the full-bodied, elegant style of the vintage, it offers a beautiful perfume of ripe red and black currants, smoked tobacco, savory dried herbs, and scorched earth. It’s certainly accessible today, with ripe, integrated tannins, yet it has the balance and concentration to evolve for another two decades. Drink 2023-2043.

Jeb DunnuckLovely fragrance to the nose, smells inviting. Lifted and fresh straight away, this has focus and is quite straight at the moment, linear with a precision that keeps it quite tight from start to finish. You can sense the detail and the definition to the fruit - herbal spiced red berry fruits with tons of liquorice giving a sweet, sticky aspect and some fresh mint notes too that come in towards the end. Feels well handled, it's quietly confident with no excess, it certainly doesn't shout loudly but it's well balanced and captivating. Markedly different to some of the other Napa Cabernets. Drink 2025-2046.

Georgina Hindle - Decanter - Ron Santiago De Cuba Carta Blanca Rum (700ml)CUBA$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenABV: 38%
Until now, the Cuban rum category in Australia has been limited to Havana Club. Santiago de Cuba breaks the drought with three new lines. Named after the city of Santiago and boasting over 160 years of distilling experience, Cuba Ron's rum making tradition is unrivalled on the island. Their portfolio starts with the Carta Blanca, a three year old spirit intended primarily as a mixer, offering a balance of a light sweetness with a dry finish. 38% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... A typically characterful Cuban light rum with pleasing grassy, vanilla and leathery notes. 4.5 stars - diffordsguide.com
...Despite the plus points to this rum I still feel that overall it is all just a little bit to light and to clean. The only real evidence of “rum” comes in the finish which is slightly leathery with a note of tobacco. I really enjoy more fruity white rums such as Chairman’s Reserve White Label and Appleton Special. This is probably handy for a bartender needing a more easy going rum. From my perspective though it is very average. 2 Stars - thefatrumpirate.com

- Ron Santiago De Cuba 11 Year Anejo Old Rum (700ml)CUBA$124. 99Bottle$1499.88 DozenABV: 40%
A big age statement for Cuban Rum, Ron Santiago's Extra Añejo 11 year old blends the sweetness of sugarcane molasses grown in the Oriente province in the South East of the island with the skillful touch of the Maestros del Ron Cubano. Aged in white oak, there's a nice balance of mature notes including estery tropical fruits, coconut, delicate vanilla and almond, with the sweetness perfectly balanced by moderate spices. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... If you are looking to explore the “lighter” side of rum. I would recommend this as a sipper. It’s quite easy going but at the same time has enough going on to remain interesting. The balance of this rum is really good... Sure this works great in things like an Old Fashioned but I think its best enjoyed on its own. 4 stars - the fatrumpirate.com

2022 Il Marroneto Ignaccio Rosso di MontalcinoTuscany, ITALY$135. 00Bottle$1620.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkIl Marroneto produce some of the purest and most perfumed expressions of Sangiovese made anywhere. Part of the secret lies in their prime location within Brunello's traditional top class territory, situated at 450m above sea level with a cool northern exposure. Combined with the much lauded talents of gifted winemaker Alessandro Mori, and it's clear to see why Il Marroneto are so highly coveted by Brunello fans worldwide.

Other Reviews....
Alessandro Mori did not have a Rosso vineyard, so he cobbled together vines from declassified Brunello and leased land (measuring 7,000 square meters) to provide the fruit for this wine. The Il Marroneto 2022 Rosso di Montalcino Ignaccio is underlined by brightness and freshness with forest berry fruits, blue flower and navel orange. Harvest in 2022 started early on September 20th, compared to September 24th in 2020 and much later in 2019 on October 5th. Drink 2025-2038.
93 points
Monica Larner - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2022 Rosso di Montalcino Ignaccio is exotic with a seductive blend of spiced blood orange, wild strawberries, rose petals and a dusting of spice. Juicy and vividly fresh, it sweeps across the palate with ripe raspberry and cherry-berry fruits while taking on a coating of chalky minerality toward the close. Sour citrus enlivens the experience as this finishes long and staining yet still remarkably fresh. The mouth waters for more under an air of violet inner florals. Simply spellbinding. This is already a total pleasure, yet it has the balance for short-term cellaring. Due to the changes in the Rosso di Montalcino regulations, Il Marroneto will be able to use another hectare, originally planted for IGT Sangiovese, in their Rosso in the coming vintages, which means more of this glorious juice to go around. Drink 2024-2032.

Other Reviews....
Alessandro Mori makes two Rosso di Montalcino wines, and the difference between them comes down to the selection of barrels used in the final blend. The Il Marroneto 2022 Rosso di Montalcino Iacopo has a special story because Alessandro asked his son Iacopo to choose the one barrel that becomes this wine. That process was initiated in 2019 and has been the impetus for this wine ever since. With that first vintage, Iacopo selected a barrel with a slightly darker-colored wine, lots of blackcurrant intensity and a textural profile that veers more toward Brunello than it does Rosso. He has looked to re-create those characteristics in all the vintages to follow. This is a ramped-up expression of Sangiovese with energy, youthful fruit, cassis and blood orange. Drink 2025-2038.

Monica Larner - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateDeeply complex, the 2022 Rosso di Montalcino Iacopo wafts up with a cascade of rose petals, incense, cinnamon sticks, spiced citrus rinds and dried black cherries. This is silken in texture with depths of dark red berry fruits that saturate, underscored by saline minerals and spice, all guided by a core of brilliant acidity. The 2022 finishes with tremendous length and a crunchy feel, leaving gripping tannins that tug at the palate. This truly deserves the title of Baby Brunello. What an absolutely stunning wine. The Iacopo is produced from one declassified barrel of Brunello fruit. Drink 2026-2034.

The Il Marroneto 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is a wine of special depth and elegance. Alessandro Mori tells me that fermentation in 2020 proceeded nicely with what he describes as a "primordial stew" of grape must, resulting in high pressure "geysers" or "liquid bombs" that rip right through the cap because of pressure build-up. Someone is having tons of fun in the winery. High temperatures (between 36 to 38 degrees Celsius) serve to fix the wine's ruby color and the elegance of its perfumes, which are more floral than fruity. At the end of fermentation, he manages the skins with light wetting by hand with a tube. This vintage offers softness and a silky texture that feels glossy to the palate. Drink 2026-2048.

Monica Larner - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is an understated beauty, slowly emerging with a delicate blend of rose petals, fresh mint, crushed rocks and vividly ripe black cherries. It hovers across the palate, lifted and finessed yet spry, with ripe red berry fruits and hints of lavender, taking on a liquid floral concentration toward the close. Pleasantly chewy and long, the 2020 leaves the senses stained in primary concentration, with a tinge of bitter cranberry and pretty inner florals that resonate over a bed of classically dry tannins. This is a more concentrated and intense yet wonderfully balanced rendition of Il Marroneto's Brunello. Drink 2028-2038.

Eric Guido - VinousA restrained wine that’s complex and deep, with aromas of cherry stones, butter, fresh violets, orange peel and prunes. Firm tannins with a grainy texture, yet it has a sweet finish, super-energetic acidity and a full body. Flavors of blood oranges and violets. Perfect balance and incredible aging potential. A super classic. Drink or hold.

James Suckling‘I'd never seen the green [of the vegetation] like that before’, remarks Alessandro Mori of 2020, putting the vibrancy of the colour down to less pollution as the population remained in their homes. Calling 2020 an easy vintage, much like 2016, the estate now practices accapamento – a ‘wall’ of leaves which act to shade the bunches and also take up some resources, causing the vine to struggle slightly more. There's great freshness here, with coiled potency of vibrant plum and sour and dark cherry at the ripe core. A lick of salinity and a brush of wood accompany silky tannins. James Button - Decanter - Highland Park 30 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Older BottlingOrkney Islands, SCOTLAND$2999. 00Bottle$35988.00 DozenABV: 48.1%
Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not pictured.
There have been a number of releases of HP 30 over the years, each with slightly different packaging and ABVs. This one was reportedly released around 2009. When Highland Park's robust and oily new make gets extended time in a high proportion of refill and first-fill sherry European and American oak casks, the resulting flavour profile is astonishingly complex. Expect the fudgy sweetness found in the more mature expressions, paired with layers of aromatic spice, dark chocolate orange and floral peat notes. 48.1% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... What can be more classic and classy than a thirty years old Highland Park? Colour: amber. Nose: burst with a blend of honey, or rather mead, sherry and liquorice as well as with whiffs or peat smoke. Develops more towards burnt brownies and toffee, and then we get quite some menthol and mulled wine (obvious hints of aniseed, for instance) before it returns to a more classical honeyness. It’s funny how the sherry comes and goes, maybe we could call this ‘echoes of sherry’. Ha, poetry! Tends to get a little less expressive over time, which is a little strange. Mouth: rich, fruity, assertive, with the sherry and the mint upfront and a development more on chocolate-coated orange zests, mead once again, lemon squash (unexpected in an old official HP), liquorice and a little peat once again. Finish: rather long, more on smoked tea, with some pepper coming to the front and a half-honeyed, half-vinous signature. Comments: it’s rather more nervous than expected and the first time I tried it blind, I thought it was the 25yo. I feel it’s less rounded and polished than earlier official 30s. Not so much of a classic, after all, but very good ‘of course’. Now, I think I like the 25 a little better. - Serge Valentin, whiskyfun.com -

2021 Nicks Secret ANGL McLaren Vale ShirazMcLaren Vale, South Australia, AUSTRALIAReduced from $34.99$17. 99Bottle$215.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 6 Years (2025-2031)ABV: 14%Closure: Diam CorkFrom a very well-known family owned estate with an Italian-Australian heritage, this McLaren Vale winery burst onto the scene in the early 2000’s when the then, world's most powerful wine critic, Robert Parker, lauded many of the wines with scores in the high nineties.
Named in honour of the family’s matriarch, this plush Shiraz was matured in a mix of 25% new French, 5% new American and 70% seasoned oak hogsheads for a period of 16 months.Oozing with succulence, this rich, seductive McLaren Vale Shiraz is a compelling buy at close to half it’s normal price.
Dense inky black heart with a near equally deep dark red black hue. Heady aromas of liquorice, blackberry and dark plum engulf the nostrils complimented by some vanillin oak, earthy mocha and spice notes. Rich, plush and seductive, the full, weighty palate is swamped with liquorice, blackberry and dark plum fruits that are oozing with succulence. Spicy vanillin oak, subtle earthy mocha and traces of peppered fennel also chime in. Boasting abundant power and a nicely built tannin structure that has a velvety feel, it finishes long and opulent.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

It revels in its full flex of the variety and the accompanying woody seasoning. Dark fruit, black pepper, cinnamon, clove, turned earth and undergrowth going on. It soars on the pulverised granite grip of tannins and lingers with its epic array of woody spice. Big vibe, big energy, big wine, and great harmony in all that. Classic stuff.

Mike Bennie – Wine Business MagazineThis is immediately appealing on the nose with dark fruit intensity, game, toasted spice, and cedary oak characters. The palate delivers succulent fruit intensity with spicy nuances, splendidly framed by silky texture and polished tannins, making it structured and plush at the same time. At its best: now to 2038.

Sam Kim – Wine OrbitNamed after the matriarch of the *** family, the wine hails from the south-western district of McLaren Vale where much of the *** fruit grows. This is a more demure expression than other Shiraz in the family portfolio, the fruit notes dark blue in tone with subtle vanillin oak integrated now after 20 months maturation in 10% new French and 5% new American barrels. Despite its depths, the palate is quite lively, acidity fresh and flavoursome with its spot on fruit energy, tannins prominent yet balanced with the overall weight of the wine. Most enjoyable.

2022 Place of Changing Winds Mari Magno Pinot NoirMacedon Ranges, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: Diam CorkIntroducing the first release under the new Mari Magno label, this Pinot Noir is drawn largely from Place of Changing Winds échalas (staked bush-vine) block, with some young-vine fruit in support. Aged an extra year in bottle, it arrives with lifted energy, aromatic complexity and a supple, expressive palate. Designed as a space for experimentation and evolution, Mari Magno signals an exciting new tier at Place of Changing Winds.

This is called ‘the new entry level pinot noir’ which is a fun thing at $80 or so, but of course we know the detail here can command such an introduction. From younger vines on the estate. There’s some great DNA of the site, or as I interpret from tasting just about all the releases from this place. Good one.
Delicious. Great drinking. Fine. A good lead of game meat, sappy cherry, green olive, alpine herbs, just-ripe strawberry and a general sense of softness, balance, resolve with its time in bottle and maturation generally. A silty feel to tannin, but relaxed, the wine generally so; long and luxurious in a casual kind of way. A little greenery here, so expect that, coolness and minty flickers. Enjoyable. Drink 2025-2032.

2023 Place of Changing Winds Between Two Mountains Pinot NoirMacedon Ranges, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$140. 00Bottle$1680.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: Diam CorkNamed for its location between Mount Macedon and Mount Bullengarook, Between Two Mountains is the most representative expression of the season. In 2023, just one Pinot Noir was produced from the estate, the result of a meticulous selection across the vineyard’s best parcels. A cooler, later season brought a wine of lifted perfume, fine structure, and striking poise.
Whole bunches made up nearly a third of the blend, enhancing the aromatic complexity and spice. Maturation took place over 21 months in a range of Stockinger casks (with minimal new oak impact), as well as glass globe fermenters. Seductive and finely detailed, this should be amongst the most captivating wines yet from this remarkable site.Other Reviews....
This is the only pinot noir from 2023 from POCW. About a third is whole bunch across all the clones and sites on the estate vineyard. The wine ends up in Stockinger barrels for 21 months. Serious approach.
A very good wine. Very. Fine, tight, tense, succulent, dark cherry, sour cherry, fennel, blood orange, white pepper, game meat – a lot on, you could keep listing detail but the idea is this is complex, compelling, with everything woven beautifully together. Fruit feels bright and sweet yet just on the cusp, and so fresh, the persistence of all that superb – a touch overtly fruity for those who seek that. An elegance but with a kink of funk and interest. The x-factor we seek. And the personality of place. Stellar. Drink 2025 - 2035.

Mike Bennie - The Wine FrontThe 2023 Between Two Mountains Pinot Noir leads with sandalwood and clary sage, cranberry, cigar box and graphite. In the mouth, the wine is loaded with dried herbs, cold tea and wet asphalt, and it lingers long on the palate through the finish. There are also notes of rose petals and cracked pistachios. Texturally, the wine is shaped by sandy tannins that feel both pliable and supportive to the fruit. All things point toward the clarity and focus of this wine being exacerbated by another day open, be sure to give it some air. It was made with around 30% whole bunches and matured for 21 months in a range of Stockinger casks (228, 500, 600 and 1,000 liters) and Wineglobe. 12% alcohol, sealed under Diam and wax. 2023 Place of Changing Winds Larderdark ChardonnayMacedon Ranges, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$180. 00Bottle$2160.00 DozenABV: 12.9%Closure: Diam CorkThe most powerful Chardonnay yet from Place of Changing Winds. Sourced from minuscule yields of just 144g per vine—well below Grand Cru Burgundy levels—this is a wine of immense drive, depth, and energy. Expect intense ruby grapefruit and quince with creamy lees, exotic spice and a saline, stony finish. Mostly aged in glass globe fermenters with a single new Stockinger barrel.

Everything about this wine oozes restraint and composure. The 2023 Larderdark Chardonnay leads with chalk and florals, citrus pith and musk sticks, crushed nuts and brine. On the palate, the wine is long and enveloping, with no hard edges or angles, and the length is a remarkable thing in and of itself. Pastry, baking spice and dried green herbs emerge. It is quite different in character to the 2022 wine, and personally, I prefer the character of this iteration. However, they are both exceptional wines. It comes from low-yielding vines (144 grams per vine, which is 12 hectoliters per hectare), went through full malolactic and matured in three Wineglobes and one new Stockinger barrique. The oak is apparent but not intrusive, and the sapid core of lime flavor is like bursting a finger lime parcel on the tongue: pure and stinging. This is a beautiful wine here. 974 bottles filled. 12.9% alcohol, sealed under screw Diam and wax. Drink 2026 - 2038.

Erin Larkin - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateVery low yields to bring this wine to life. Matured in wine globes (glass) and a Stockinger barrel. The site of course maturing and growing into its personality.
This is a very intense and concentrated wine, rich and unctuous, soft and supple. There’s bold flavour up front, nectarine, red apple, and then a wash of honey-yoghurt, truffle butter and some gentle popcorn notes and touches of brine and a general sense of minerality. The plump flavours and swish of flavour move well up front, the finish a little diffuse and breezy, but has a bit of persistence, in a gentle way. A sense of opulence and yet a sense of washiness to the wine too. Curious. Pleasing drinking, you a good hit of the variety, it just doesn’t prosecute its case in full, despite being full. Open fermented with native yeasts; on skins for 16 days. Classically varietal, this is redolent of cherries, woody herbs and dusty earth notes. The oak ageing (12 months in older French) gives it the palate tension a Chianti-phile might expect. But this is the Vale, and a near-40-year history here makes it a rusted on local, with this an excellent example of why it is so suited – mid-weight, sinewy, fresh, savoury and crying out for food. You’re getting a decent bang for your buck with this classic example of a Margaret River staple, It’s the classic blend but then there’s more. The Savvy came from the cooler Karridale area in the south and 10% of the Semillon was barrel fermented before whole bunch pressing and wild fermentation. You don’t often see that level of winemaking in a wine that sells for $18. The result is a wine that captures the essential fruit energy complemented by that subtle bit of winemaking artifact. 2024 Bannockburn Pinot NoirGeelong, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$64. 99Bottle$779.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2025-2033)ABV: 13.5%Closure: StelvinIntense but bunchy nose with a rich, supple palate that finishes long and expansive.
This release brings together Bannockburn’s entire spectrum of Pinot vineyards. The 2024 includes fruit from Olive Tree Hill, planted in 1976, 10 Rows (1991), Stuart Block (1997), Anns Block (2004) and the close-planted De La Terre block planted in 2007. All the sites lie in volcanic loam and dark clay over a limestone base and are planted to various clones, mainly MV6 with a smattering of the Dijon (or Bernard) clones. Fruit from each block fermented separately, with approximately 20% bunches included and a small portion undergoing carbonic maceration. The wine was pressed to hogsheads and puncheons (25% new) for 10 months’ maturation.
Dark red core with black shaded edges and a red to dark red hue. The nose is intense but at the same time very bunchy with dried clove infused aromas of dark cherry and strawberry trailed by some smoked meat, forest floor and spicy dried herb notes. Rich supple dark cherry and strawberry fruits are seductively layered across the palate with complexing elements of dried clove, bramble, rhubarb, smoked meat, forest floor and spice lending further interest. Concentrated and powerful it has polished tannins. Lingering through the long expansive conclusion are dried clove and spicy smoked meat characters.

From vines planted between '76 and '07; 20% whole bunches and 25% new oak. A light, bright cherry red. Red fruited, with wild hedgerow, roses and a melange of spices. This is really lifted and perfumed on the bouquet. Light to medium bodied, this builds nicely across the palate with superfine and persistent tannins and bright acidity, giving the wine both structure and length. I can see this filling out very nicely over the next few years. Drink 2025-2033.

Philip Rich - James Halliday's Wine CompanionAll the herbs and spices, of course, but the shells of nuts, woodsmoke, a chicory element and whispers of both black coffee and black tea, all of which swirl around sound, sure-footed cherry-berry fruit flavours. This wine is as complex as it is assured, its sinewy tannin finessed into place, its flavours cascading out through the finish. This will age beautifully, and is best consumed with at least another few years under its belt. Drink 2027-2033+

The Pieropan winery is in the heart of the Classico zone and dates back to 1890. Leonildo ‘Nino’ Pieropan, who sadly passed away in 2018, was the first to show the world just how great Garganega, and Italian white wine, can be. He recognised the importance of terroir early on, acquiring various hillside vineyards and expanding the prestigious Calvarino and La Rocca vineyards, first made as single vineyard crus in 1971 and 1978 respectively.
Today, sons Dario (winemaker) and Andrea (viticulturist) continue the family tradition. The brothers have converted all of their vineyards to organic and are overseeing the new winery being built amongst the vineyards just outside the village. Made mostly from Garganega grapes with the inclusion of 15% Trebbiano di Soave.
Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Aromas of pear and red apple skin show plenty of elevation out of the glass with hints of lime, fresh herbs and wet stone also evident.
