A classic dry and savoury Margaret River blend.

A blend of 65% Semillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc with 10% of the wine barrel fermented. Brilliant water like colour with a faint greenish tinge around the edges. Herbaceous gooseberry and passionfruit scents mix with grassy asparagus and subtle lime notes. Racy gooseberry, lime and passionfruit flavours have a herbaceous grassy and asparagus like overlay. Crisp acidity finishing very dry and savoury yet with ample length.

You’re getting a decent bang for your buck with this classic example of a Margaret River staple, It’s the classic blend but then there’s more. The Savvy came from the cooler Karridale area in the south and 10% of the Semillon was barrel fermented before whole bunch pressing and wild fermentation. You don’t often see that level of winemaking in a wine that sells for $18. The result is a wine that captures the essential fruit energy complemented by that subtle bit of winemaking artifact. Drink 2024-2027.

Intense but bunchy nose with a rich, supple palate that finishes long and expansive.

This release brings together Bannockburn’s entire spectrum of Pinot vineyards. The 2024 includes fruit from Olive Tree Hill, planted in 1976, 10 Rows (1991), Stuart Block (1997), Anns Block (2004) and the close-planted De La Terre block planted in 2007. All the sites lie in volcanic loam and dark clay over a limestone base and are planted to various clones, mainly MV6 with a smattering of the Dijon (or Bernard) clones. Fruit from each block fermented separately, with approximately 20% bunches included and a small portion undergoing carbonic maceration. The wine was pressed to hogsheads and puncheons (25% new) for 10 months’ maturation.
Dark red core with black shaded edges and a red to dark red hue. The nose is intense but at the same time very bunchy with dried clove infused aromas of dark cherry and strawberry trailed by some smoked meat, forest floor and spicy dried herb notes. Rich supple dark cherry and strawberry fruits are seductively layered across the palate with complexing elements of dried clove, bramble, rhubarb, smoked meat, forest floor and spice lending further interest. Concentrated and powerful it has polished tannins. Lingering through the long expansive conclusion are dried clove and spicy smoked meat characters.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

From vines planted between '76 and '07; 20% whole bunches and 25% new oak. A light, bright cherry red. Red fruited, with wild hedgerow, roses and a melange of spices. This is really lifted and perfumed on the bouquet. Light to medium bodied, this builds nicely across the palate with superfine and persistent tannins and bright acidity, giving the wine both structure and length. I can see this filling out very nicely over the next few years. Drink 2025-2033.

All the herbs and spices, of course, but the shells of nuts, woodsmoke, a chicory element and whispers of both black coffee and black tea, all of which swirl around sound, sure-footed cherry-berry fruit flavours. This wine is as complex as it is assured, its sinewy tannin finessed into place, its flavours cascading out through the finish. This will age beautifully, and is best consumed with at least another few years under its belt. Drink 2027-2033+

    Scrumptious benchmark Soave.

The Pieropan winery is in the heart of the Classico zone and dates back to 1890. Leonildo ‘Nino’ Pieropan, who sadly passed away in 2018, was the first to show the world just how great Garganega, and Italian white wine, can be. He recognised the importance of terroir early on, acquiring various hillside vineyards and expanding the prestigious Calvarino and La Rocca vineyards, first made as single vineyard crus in 1971 and 1978 respectively.

Today, sons Dario (winemaker) and Andrea (viticulturist) continue the family tradition. The brothers have converted all of their vineyards to organic and are overseeing the new winery being built amongst the vineyards just outside the village. Made mostly from Garganega grapes with the inclusion of 15% Trebbiano di Soave.
Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Aromas of pear and red apple skin show plenty of elevation out of the glass with hints of lime, fresh herbs and wet stone also evident. Delicious pear, lime and red apple skin flavours are delivered with ample concentration over a back drop of fresh herb infusions and slatey mineral elements. Crisp acidity with a river stone like feel to the long dry finish.

    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $149. 99
    Bottle
    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

A young Deanston that's benefited from time in an Oloroso Sherry barrique. For a start, it smells older than it is; the nose has a reserved, dryish malty character, with subtle leather and tobacco mingling amongst the dried fruits. Unexpectedly mouth filling, medium to full bodied, though never aggressive. Creamy notes of tea biscuits are set against a subtle fruity character (orange zest? Ripe papaya?) Good length, ending drier, the oak encroaching. 50% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered. Tasted from a 50ml sample.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Barley sugar. Biscuit. Vanilla. Oak. Palate: Sweet vanilla. Shortbread. Toasted barley. Finish: Oaky-sweet finish with a vanilla aftertaste.

"This is riiiight up my alley... either Springbank 18 is evolving, or it’s me. Or, well, perhaps both." - whiskyfun.com

The all-Bourbon matured 18 year old makes a return to our shelves with the annual 2024 edition just landed. The last time Serge Valentin from whiskyfun tasted this expression was back in 2020. As noted from his most recent tasting below, these bottlings seem to be getting better and better. The producers note honeyed granola, fruit gums, pear drops and tropical fruits. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... A freshly bottled edition, August 2024. A sign of the times, you’ll currently find Springbank 18 priced anywhere between €350 and €750 from online retailers, or from €250 on eBay. Of course, this doesn’t change the quality of the liquid one bit. The last one we tasted was the 2020 edition, very good (WF 86) but a far cry from our favourite, the 10-year-old (WF 91 last time) or the younger Local Barleys (also 91). And it's far superior to the ‘Red’, about which we’ll remain silent. Colour: straw. Nose: surprising, heading in the direction of the 10-year-old, with plenty of wet chalk, raw wool, sourdough, aspirin tablets, even bandages, followed by lemon zest, paraffin, a hint of seawater, and traces of tar. This is riiiight up my alley. Mouth: oilier and saltier on the palate, with peat, ashes, a touch of green apple liqueur, and that persistent wet chalk that’s a bit reminiscent of ‘natural’ champagnes. A lovely green pepper then appears, accompanied by small bits of candied lemon, which I find particularly ‘Springbank’. Finish: long, saline, peppery, with fine bitterness and ash, and then paraffined lemon in the aftertaste. Comments: well, either Springbank 18 is evolving, or it’s me. Or, well, perhaps both. 90 points - whiskyfun.com

On the nose very much determined by the bourbon barrel: Ripe yellow fruit, vanilla and flower meadow. Accompanied by very subtle smoke. A wonderfully complex nose. Lots of bright yellow fruits are again present on the tongue. There is also a spicy eucalyptus note and plenty of complexity. A wonderful whisky. Springbank and 100% bourbon simply work brilliantly. One of the best whiskies I've had the pleasure of drinking so far. - whiskybase.com

Notes from the producers... Nose: Tropical fruits are at the forefront in notes of papaya and pineapple. There is a malty, dried barley note, with vanilla and custard creams. Palate: Notes of golden syrup and honeyed granola emerge on the palate, along with fruit gums, pear drops and butter icing. Finish: The tropical fruits carry through to the finish, with the addition of a herbaceous, gorse note and a touch of sea salt.

    $1799.88 Dozen

For a whisky style that's naturally on the sweeter side, this grain has survived time in a Pedro Ximenez sherry barrique without falling flat. A vague pear/apple fruitiness adds freshness to the nose; the flavours come with a mild alcohol flare and notes of cream soda, sponge cake, vanilla, milk chocolate plus late hints of dates. As an experiment in maturation, it has succeeded in fattening up to malt-standards what otherwise might have been a relatively thin affair. Hardly complex, but impressively textural for grain of this ilk. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Tasted from a 50ml sample.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Aniseed. Creamy. Hint of fennel. Sweet mint. Vanilla pod. Palate: Rich vanilla with crème brulee. More aniseed, slightly herbal. Finish: Custard, creamy finish. Lots of vanilla, raisins and icing sugar.

Earns top marks for elegance at a (reasonably) tiny $25 price tag. Well defined, fine-edged tannins provide structure and the perfect background for the fruit and spice that follows in blackberry, red plum, clove, chocolate panforte, nutmeg and a wealth of lovely, indulgent spice. A good follow up to the elegant ’22 with well-handled, discreet oak a feature across the medium bodied palate. As with the ’22, the ’23 is more refined all round and good to see the price remains the same. Drink 2024-2031.

Rich and mouth coating yet energetic with a long driving finish.

In 2003, the Croser family removed 1.3 hectares of the original Tiers Vineyard Chardonnay that was planted in 1979 in the Piccadilly Valley as the first Adelaide Hills vineyard. The area was replanted with the French Bernard clones 76 and 95 on rootstocks, on very close 1.5 metre row spacing with the fruiting wire at only 0.5 metres above the ground. This unique vineyard section produces earlier ripening, fuller flavoured Chardonnay than the old vine Chardonnay on its own roots, across the centre road in Tiers Vineyard.
Brilliant pale straw colour with green tinged edges and a watery hue. Delightful aromas of white peach and nectarine draped with dried honey sail through the nostrils trailed by some citrusy nougat, whiffs of crème brulee and delicate cashew notes. Rich, concentrated fleshy white peach, ripe nectarine, dried honey and citrusy nougat flavours engulf the palate with a mouth coating textural feel. Crème brulee, biscuit and delicate spicy cashew elements sit in the background. Showing outstanding drive, energetic acidity lends a fresh feel to the long, cream tinged finish.

Fruit is picked from a close-planted block that was planted in '03. This is wonderful chardonnay – all finesse, tension, filigreed minerality, light, savoury undertones and pristine, bright green pear, nectarine and pink grapefruit freshness. Touches of nougat, sea spray and green almond in the mesh of characters here. A suggestion of flint and wet slate lend credence and complexity, too. Very precise and energetic, and extends long in flavour and persistence of minerality. Class act. Drink by 2035.

From a close planted block established in 2003. Bernard clones 76 and 95. It’s distinctly different to the Tiers old vine Chardonnay as a result, and I tend to think it’s the clonal selection that’s the biggest point of difference.
Pear, grapefruit, green banana, almond biscotti and spice, bread dough and some honey/floral perfume, with just a tiny bit of matchstick. It’s juicy and flavoursome, but tight in acidity, with a distinctly flinty texture, along with a creamy nougat richness, and a tight citrus finish of excellent length. Wonderful wine. The close spaced planting of this part of the Tiers vineyard imparts a slightly different flavour and textural feel to the Chardonnays from the old Tiers plantings. Intense aromas of tropical fruits, brioche and spices. The palate is ripe and textured although the chalky acid and light citrus edge hold the definition and line through to the long finish. Supremely balanced with the oak and fruit integration seamless and refined. Excellent wine. Drink 2025-2037.

Juicy fruits with ripe, slightly chewy tannins, bright acidity and a fleshy spiced dried herb laced finish of ample length.

From 60+ year old vines located just across the valley to the north of the winery not far from the famous windmill of Moulin a Vent. The vines here are east facing in granite soil and Moulin a Vent has a high presence of manganese which gives the wine its Moulin a Vent identity. This vineyard is slightly lower on the slope than his holding right in the centre of La Roilette (which sits adjacent to Moulin a Vent and which historically was considered part of Moulin a Vent), and close to the family winery less than 1km away. Always among the richest and deepest of wines with more structure and ageing capacity this cuvee is particularly successful in 2023 with the tannic structure of the wine well covered by the ripeness and fleshy generosity of the vintage. The harvest is all by hand with selection and sorting in the vineyard and winery. Maceration is carried out on 100% whole bunch fermenting semi-carbonic with indigenous yeasts lasting between 15 and 20 days on skins. The grapes are pressed then settled with fermentation continuing for 8 to 10 days, at 18 degrees to trigger the malolactic process. Aging lasts 18 months: 50% in 5-year-old oak barrels and 50% in vats.
Deep dark red black tinged core with a dark red hue. Aromas of ripe strawberry and morello cherry infused with dried herbs mix with some earthy incense and spice like notes. Rich, spicy and textural, this a remarkably powerful yet refined Chardonnay that shows a Burgundy like finesse and complexity.

Located in the Piccadilly Valley within the Adelaide Hills region, Brian Croser’s Tiers vineyard was planted in 1979 making it the first in the region. It is perfectly suited to Chardonnay being a closely matched homo-clime of Burgundy, especially the southern end of the Cotes de Beaune where the great wines of Montrachet and Meursault are grown. Fermented in French oak barriques (one third new) the wine was then aged on full lees until November 2024.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with highlights of green around the edges and a watery hue. Elevated white peach, pear and nectarine aromas flood the nostrils complimented by some subtle dried honey, biscuity nougat, cashew and infusions of gun flint. Rich, spicy and textural, the medium to full bodied palate is flush with white peach, pear and nectarine fruits which show terrific intensity and purity. Fresh, chalky acidity lends focus. Dried honey, nougat, subtle crème brulee, wet stone and gun flint elements unwind across the back half. Remarkably powerful yet refined it finishes exceptionally long with a Burgundy like finesse and complexity.

The 2024 Tiers Vineyard Chardonnay always ratchets up the fruit power and intensity from all other Chardonnays, both at Tapanappa and in the Adelaide Hills region at large. This usually gives us a thundering display of concentration and phenolic drive, and this 2024 iteration is no exception to that long-established rule. There are notes of crushed and salted nuts, saffron, Golden Delicious apples, nougat and oyster shell/shale with a scintillating acid line. I still quietly wonder to myself if we are seeing these wines too young. However, it then becomes up to us to exercise some restraint when selecting our drinking windows. For me, this wine will be at its best a couple of years from now and into the long future ahead. May we all age so gracefully. 14.1% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2027-2037.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate

This has to rank up there with the best of the Tiers Vineyard Chardies yet released. It was an ever so slightly warmer vintage than the previous and this is reflected in the depth and fruit concentration expressed with relative opulence. Lots of nectarine, and cashew with a spicy pear edge to it. The fine chalky acid really holds the tension ensuring a defined and exceptionally long finish. A dry savoury and tight subtle astringency on the finish provides the final flourish to an outstanding wine. Drink 2025-2037.

This is excellent, with so much clarity and precision. Aromas of minerals, struck match, grapefruit, flint, crushed stones, white orchard fruit and talc. The palate is tightly wound, with vivid acidity, generous underlying power and saline and yeasty notes. Delicious now, but the core of fruit will evolve for years to come and only grow in complexity. Made from own-rooted gin gin clone planted in 1981. Exceptional. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Coming off a range of sites of older vines, this is a bold expression in the range, though the cooler year turns the volume down. The oak is French and American, with 25% new (down from 40% prior), but it leaves its thumbprint, with char, vanilla and clove spicing across a full and rich, though not overly saturated, canvas of brambly berry and plum fruits, along with a little salted chocolate. Built for a loyal cohort, this satisfies the brief. Drink by 2030.

    A scrumptious, intensely flavoured Riesling.

Brilliant water like core with highlights of green around the outskirts. Lime juice and green apple scents jump out of the glass followed by some lemon, chalky talc and steely mineral notes. Certified organic and biodynamic this vintage is a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot, with the balance Malbec and Petit Verdot. Maturation was for a period of 14 months in French oak, 40% of it new.

Put bluntly, this is perhaps the finest young Australian Cabernet I can recall seeing. It is simply brilliant. The blend is 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Merlot, with that last one percent a mix of Malbec and Petit Verdot. The maturation was for fourteen months in French oak, with 40% of it new. An inky dark maroon colour, this is concentrated and seamless. We have aromas of dark, rich chocolate, cocoa beans, plums, beef stock, graphite, mulberries, cloves and blackberries. Elegance and refinement here, this is all class and there is wonderful length, with the wine finishing with the silkiest tannins. There is immaculate balance and amazing intensity and yet the wine dances with freshness and energy. The image that keeps appearing here is Muhammed Ali at his peak, dancing with grace. The more time in the glass or in an open bottle you can give it, the more reward will come. Surely one of the greatest Cabernets made in this country, perhaps Vanya’s best ever, and it confirms that 2023 in Margaret River – a region of seemingly endless fine vintages – is truly special. Why not 100? I do feel it deserves it, but I simply do not trust Vanya not to come up with something even better next vintage.

The 2023 Diana Madeline is an exciting wine. The 2023 season was mild, dry and quite spectacular. There was some rain at the very end of the red harvest, and this was a very site-specific thing, not widespread over the region. Aromatically, the wine is intensely perfumed: graphite and pressed lavender, wet rose petals, raspberry pip, licorice, concrete and summer rain. This gives everything that I could hope for in an early-release Cabernet: dark fruit and exotic spice, mineral detail and more. The chalky and fine tannins shape the palate and spool out long over the finish. Is this the finest and best Diana Madeline made to date? Perhaps! What a wine. Highly recommended. It's the perfect example of great Australian Cabernet: power without weight. Look no further. 13.7% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2055.
Here, the fruit was handpicked over seven dates, starting middle of March and culminating on a moon opposite the Saturn astral event in early April. The blend is 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot, with the 1% balance comprising Malbec and Petit Verdot.

So much purity and precision, showing aromas of blackcurrants, graphite, violets, cedar and licorice with a core of black fruit intertwined with undertones of spices, bitter chocolate and iron. The wonderfully poised palate has firm yet refined tannins and a plush, midweight mouthfeel. Mouthwatering granitic finish. The structure and tension will develop for decades. Made from 94% cabernet sauvignon, 2% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and touches of malbec and petit verdot. Excellent. Screw cap. Drink or hold.

2023 was a perfect vintage in Margaret River, and the dry-grown fruit for this wine was hand-harvested over seven picks, before wild fermentation. This is in its absolute infancy, and while the fragrant oak might be the first guest to the party right now, the fruit is undoubtedly the life of it. Pretty dried rose petals, crushed graphite, rose hip, fennel seed, a pinch of oriental spice and salted raspberries hint at what lies ahead. Tight-grained oak tannins link arms with fine fruit tannins, and well-paced natural acidity hums along with lilting rhythm. At its core, there is a purity of bright fruit. A wine of understated elegance and immense power behind its poise. The slight ocean brine on the finish calls you back, like a sea siren. Don’t rush – give this a few years before opening and you’ll be rewarded. Drink 2026-2045.

This Diana Madeline delights as soon as it's poured. A deep, dark purple-red and so vibrant. Ah the aromas next – all cedar wood, oak spices and warm earth with fresh mulberries and blackberry essence. It has concentrated, fabulous fruit on the fuller-bodied palate yet there’s a fineness, too, with supple tannins enmeshed in lively acidity. It’s a gorgeous drink. Too young now as it’s still showing off its youthful exuberance. Give this a few more years in the cellar to build more complexity and detail; it's guaranteed to age beautifully for another two or so decades. Drink 2025-2045.

The quality of tannins is part of the great experience, suede, refreshing, persistent, but you can see the pedigree of the wine in detail of dark berry fruits, espresso, mocha, chocolate and liquorice then bay leaf, brine and sea spray, salt bush and mahogany; all this delivers so much to the experience in its layers and layers. It sets out at medium weight and glides, an elegance, a confidence in balance and the harmony on hand. That it is generally just outrageously delicious is the wine’s ace in the hole. Nota bene the dark roast coffee/mocha is noted here and lends a little piquant bitterness and gummy elements in the finish. Quality writ large is the mainstay; top flight stuff. Drink 2027-2045.

Balblair is a characterful make that’s rarely in the spotlight. Here's a bit of a twist on one from an indie: Finished in a two year-seasoned, first-fill Oloroso sherry European oak butt for one year, following maturation in a refill sherry butt for over eleven years, this Balblair is defined by dried fruit notes. European oak typically imparts a greater spice and depth of character than soft, sweet American oak. The result is a deep, full-bodied Balblair that's rounded and relatively soft given the strength. Malt-forward flavours feature with a bitter chocolate edge and moderate heat and tannin at the last. Expect a big'un. 604 bottles produced. 57.4% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered. Yalumba's flagship offering is made from shiraz split across vineyards in the Barossa and Eden Valleys with an average age of 80 years. A portion is matured for 23 months in 30% new French oak barriques and hogsheads and the balance in one-year-old (and older) American octaves, French barriques and hogsheads. Deep crimson with ripe blackberry, black cherry, satsuma plum and blueberry fruits cut with baking spices, vanillin oak, cedar, licorice, dark chocolate, clove and violets. The fruit glistens on the palate, beautifully weighted and graceful in its shape, with ripe tannins melting into the wine and a shimmering acidity that provides cadence and shines a light on the pristine fruit. This will cellar beautifully, but my goodness it is lovely to drink at the moment. Another epic Octavius release. Drink by 2038.

The first bottle of 2018 The Octavius was corked. I have opened the second bottle for review. Coffee grounds, dark chocolate, mulberry compote and black olive tapenade lead the charge for this irrepressibly Australian Shiraz. Big bold forest berry flavors are effusive and almost gushing, held in check by the firm hand of tannic structure. Woodsy spices—sandalwood, particularly—punctuate the black cherry and salted licorice characters. This is really good, satisfying, mouthfilling, delicious. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.

A famous wine which, fortunately, does not receive quite the extended oak treatment it once did. From Barossa vines dating back to 1854, maturation is in Yalumba-coopered oak octaves – 21 months in a mix of 25% new French barriques and hogsheads and the remainder in one-year and older French octaves (which are 100-litre oak barrels), barriques and hogsheads. It is now one of the few wines to be available through the La Place de Bordeaux system, reserved for the world’s finest. Black cherry hue. This is still very young and needs a good four to six years before it is likely to come into its own. Then it should offer fifteen to twenty years of pleasure, for the patient. There is still plenty of oak evident at this early stage, but it is integrating well, if slowly, showing good concentration, power and intensity. At this early stage, it is still a bit of a bruiser but a finely balanced one and a wine which shows every sign that the transformation, when it comes, will be very exciting. Seamless and with fine tannins, there is excellent length and it unfurls blackcurrants, raspberries, cranberries, mocha, hot chocolate, beefstock and floral notes on the palate. Drink 2023-2043.

Amply concentrated and texturally full yet energetic and complex.

The fruit was pressed as whole bunches and fermented naturally in a mixture of French hogsheads and puncheons (25% new). This year, 100% of the blend went through malolactic fermentation, and the wine spent 10 months maturing on lees with no stirring.
Brilliant pale straw coloured core with highlights of green around the edges and a watery hue. Elevated white peach and nectarine aromas carry a roasted nut like overlay with smoky gun flint and faint dried honey accents also evident. Rich, fleshy white peach and nectarine fruits are counterpointed by brisk acidity which lends a fresh feel. Dried honey, roasted almond, nougat and infusions of gun flint extend across the back half. The 2024 Chardonnay is restrained and harmonious. This is in fact its most startling feature. All aspects of the wine, from the stone fruit and exotic/baking spices to the saline acidity and the toasty oak, are all in balance in a way that is most attractive. I would go so far as to say that "balance" is one of the main takeaways for me with this collection release. Winemaker Reid Bosward knows a thing or two about Barossa semillon and I'm loving the rendition he's putting out under his nascent Bosward wine label. Crisp, tautly stretched, it's a textural, lemony ride with hints of fresh lime, citrus zest, green apple, white flowers, clover, crushed rock and cut fennel. Crisp, lightly slinky and full of energy. 2010 Depaz Rhum Agricole Rum (700ml)
    MARTINIQUE
    $220. 00
    Bottle
    $2640.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45%

Depaz agricultural rhums are produced exclusively from super-fresh canes selected for their capacity to provide a rich, fruity aroma. Harvest starts in February when the cane fields are covered in white “feathers” (the cane sugar flowers, known as “flech’kann”, indicating that the plant is perfectly ripe and saturated with sugar). Freshness is fundamental. As one creole expression goes: “the cane should have it’s feet in the fields and it’s head in the mill”. In other words, once cut, the cane should be ground immediately to capture the most expressive juice. That freshness can be preserved even when the rums are oak-aged. This vintage-dated bottling combines eleven carefully selected barrels containing rums from the 2010 harvest. First matured for more than 10 years in American oak, a secondary maturation followed in 350 litre French oak barrels for 18 to 24 months. The rum ends up with a warming overlay of almond paste and mandarin confit aromas and flavours. Perhaps bottled not a month too late, it has a dry, natural feel, good freshness, and an oak-fruit balance that's similar to many Armagnacs. These styles can take a while to open up, so it's recommended served after five or minutes of air contact. 45% Alc./Vol.

Delord Floc de Gascogne Blanc (700ml)
    Armagnac, FRANCE
    $44. 99
    Bottle
    $539.88 Dozen
    ABV: 17%

This is the bright gold coloured, slightly fresher, lighter alternative to Delord's Rouge Floc de Gascogne. Made in a similar fashion by blending partially fermented grape juice with one third Delord Armagnac, for the Blanc, grape varieties like Sauvignon, Colombard, Ugni Blanc and Gros Manseng are used. The blend is then matured for around three to nine months - depending on your source.

Other reviews... Aromas of white grapes, dried fruit, acacia honey, buttery chamois leather and a faint hint of shoe polish (in a good way). The taste is honeyed with dried fruits and a hint of liquorice. 4.5 stars - diffordsguide.com

A zippy, energised Sauvignon Blanc with a tangy feel.

Fifty percent fermented in old French barrels. Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Nosing offers up a mix of guava, grapefruit and citrus aromas followed by some wet stone and grassy notes. Zippy guava, grapefruit and mandarin flavours carry a tangy feel across the palate. Subtle grassy and flinty mineral elements lie underneath. Crisp acidity energising the tangy finish.

The vines were planted from 1987 to 1993 on their own roots, unirrigated and biodynamically farmed. The fruit is handpicked, foot-stomped and soaked on skins for up to two days, then pressed to fifty/fifty neutral oak and tank. It goes through wild, ambient ferments, no adjustments, then it sits on lees, unsulfured, for three months prior to bottling.
The 2022 Sauvignon Blanc leads with tatami mat and straw, torched lemongrass and brine. In the mouth, the wine is textural and concentrated—it has a cloth-y aspect, which is evident on the nose, but it sits very well in the mouth. This is savory, throaty and full and kept fresh through the finish by a splay of soft green leaf. There’s beeswax, lemon sherbet and a hint of juniper. 13% alcohol, sealed under Diam. High lees, old oak.
Here’s a very different expression of NZ Sauvignon. It’s intense and powerful, gooseberry, passionfruit Crème Brûlée, jalapeño, grapefruit and a wild, well funky is maybe a vague term, but something of that nature. It’s spicy and saline, like a lime margarita, distinct sweet passionfruit and cumquat, with firm chalky texture and sizzling grapefruit acid bite, with a salty finish of mouth-watering intensity and fine length. Quite a ride. Drink 2026-2030+

Fresh, crunchy and concentrated with precise laser like acidity and a long zesty finish.

John Vickery was a legend of the Australian wine industry and is widely acknowledged as the old master of Riesling. His illustrious career spanned over 50 years at the likes of Leo Buring and Richmond Grove during which time he amassed more than 50 Trophies and over 400 gold medals. He was also responsible for the re-introduction of screw caps with his 1998 Richmond Grove Watervale Riesling.
Brilliant water like core with greenish tinged edges. Lemon, lime and green apple aromas jump out of the glass trailed by some wet steel and chalky mineral notes. Fresh and crunchy, the palate is both focused and concentrated with lemon, lime, Granny Smith apple and orange rind fruits reigning over a steely back drop of chalk and flinty mineral elements. Precise laser like acidity with a long zesty finish that has a tense feel to it.

Pristine lime and green apple notes, subtle jasmine and Christmas lily with hints of crushed quartz and distant herbs, but it's all about that minerally cadence and precision. Super drinking. A very elegant red fruited Cabernet that shows plenty of finesse.

Growing up in Healesville, a young Rob Hall did some summer work in the vineyards during the early to mid nineties before taking up full time work at Yarra Ridge then Punt Road. From 2002 to 2011 he was the winemaker at Mount Mary, it wasn’t until 2014 that he took the leap and began his own operation.
A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 2% Malbec sourced from 3 different vineyards. Midnight black core with a dark red black tinged hue. Elevated red to black currant and mulberry aromas gently infused with violets and bay leaf are trailed by some dusty vanillin cedar, tobacco and subtle spicy black olive notes. The elegant mid weighted palate features red currant, red liquorice and mulberry fruits over cedary tobacco, subtle dusty earth, black olive and bay leaf elements. Youthful and fresh, it has a cool toned feel and fine grained tannins. Concludes long and finessed with a red fruited aftertaste.

This is as good as any syrah yet from Vasse Felix. It is thoroughly delicious and appealing from the first take on the nose through to the soft and plush palate delivered with medium body. Interesting techniques have captured the best from the fruit. It was wild yeast fermented, with a portion of whole bunches and a little carbonic maceration to bring it all to life. Powerful cherry and spicy plum aromas lead to a medium-weight palate that is so exquisitely smooth and seamless, yet with a fine minerality to define and sustain. Outstanding.

Such a delight to drink shiraz or syrah from Margaret River these days because it’s up there as an excellent drink, as this one attests. While heady aromatics of florals, pepper and spice lure you in, this is very much in a savoury spectrum. All black olives, ferrous and brown spices infusing some dark fruit. Mid-weighted with beautifully shaped tannins and fine acidity to close. Drink by 2033.

With over two decades of experience and numerous accolades—including Gourmet Traveller Wine’s Winemaker of the Year—Jim Chatto crafts small-batch, site-expressive wines. The 2024 vintage followed Tasmania’s driest summer on record, delivering clean, concentrated fruit. These are structured, expressive Pinots with immediate appeal and excellent cellaring potential.

The most brooding and structured of the grower releases, the Killara Farm Pinot Noir offers impressive depth and drive. Sourced from Gill Christian and Todd Goebel's vineyard on Brinktop Road in the Coal River Valley. Mid-ruby with aromas of dark cherry and red plum fruits, with some wild strawberry and raspberry top notes. There's flickers of citrus blossom and clover along with hints of medina spice, forest floor, dried cranberry, negroni, dried herbs, char siu and a murmur of toasty oak. There's a depth here, while still retaining a lovely sense of space with taut, powdered riverstone tannins and a sapidity and clarity to its line that stretches the wine's travel on the finish. Sourced from the vineyard of Max and Sue Kitchell, neighbours of Jim and Daisy Chatto in Glaziers Bay in the Huon Valley. A little deeper ruby in the glass compared to other Chatto releases, the Seven Inch leads with a struck-flint reduction that cascades through ripe dark cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry fruit tones. The spice is a little deeper here and there are hints of smoked meats, dried herbs, negroni, meadow flowers, pomegranate and Chinese barbecue shop. These characters transpose over to the palate, which shows great fruit purity and depth. Just the right amount of sinewy tannin as it finishes long and true. Drink by 2040.

It’s fascinating going through these Chatto releases. They’re all peas in a pod, and yet they all have slight differences.
Seven Inch is like Chatto’s Bird release in that the emphasis is just in favour of structure; Killara Farm goes fruit/flavour and then structure. Here we have an elegant wine of muscle and flex, its spice notes tending towards mescal, its smoke notes lending a certain meatiness. The long lines of tannin here, the tripod-leg extension of the finish, and the way each flavour feels selected and arranged has this wine heading straight into elite territory. Drink 2026 - 2032+.

Light-medium depth purple-red in the glass, the bouquet smoky meaty reductive at first while the palate is fine and firm with a trace of bitter herb/Campari and tautly sculpted tannins. A suggestion of eucalypt forest floor later, as it aired in the glass. The flavour is quite complex already but the tannins are quite persuasive, suggesting it really needs food if broached early. 2023 Standish The Standish Shiraz

    $150. 00

    $1800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 14.9%
    Closure: Cork

The Standish Wine Company, founded in 1999 by sixth-generation Barossa vigneron Dan Standish, produces ultra-limited, single-vineyard Shiraz from dry-grown, old-vine sites across sub-regions like Greenock, Marananga, Krondorf, and Eden Valley. Using wild fermentation, whole-bunch inclusion, foot treading, basket pressing, and aging in French oak, Standish crafts powerful yet refined wines that express purity, intensity, and a strong sense of place. Highly sought-after and released in tiny quantities, each bottling captures the essence of its vineyard with precision and flair.

By all reports, the 2023 vintage in the Barossa was shaped by a cold, wet winter and spring, followed by a cool, dry summer and a notably late harvest. It was a challenging season in the vineyard, yet early impressions suggest the resulting wines are remarkably poised and pure. Standish’s 2023 releases, in particular, are said to show extraordinary finesse and aromatic detail, with the usual power and depth intact. Careful adjustments to whole bunch use and shorter élevage have delivered wines that are intense yet fresh—an impressive result from a difficult year.

Sourced from the Laycock family vineyard in Greenock, The Standish is a quintessential expression of Barossa Shiraz—known for it's intense, powerful, and deeply layered character, with a classic core of dark fruit and gravelly tannin.

The 2023 The Standish Shiraz is the most "Barossan" of all the Standish cuvées. It exudes earthy brick dust tannins and layers sumac and exotic spices with roasted game and sweet marrow. There are notes of black cherry, dried rose petals, sandalwood, hung deli meat and licorice, all of it strapped to rails of grounded tannin. It's chewy, substantial and of the earth, in its way. The fruit is sourced from the Laycock family vineyard in Greenock, as always, and it expresses the red clay and loam soils there in its splay of tannic fortitude and density. This is very impressive. It is fresh yet meaty/rocky—both attractive qualities in Shiraz/Syrah. 14.9% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2025 - 2043.

The long, extended '23 vintage manifests itself beautifully in the glass with this release. It could be from nowhere else but the Barossa – the Laycock vineyard in Greenock to be precise. Fruit purity is a leitmotif of the Standish wines and, again, it's peaking the meter in '23, with deep black cherry and satsuma plum fruits at its core. There's fruit density and power here but finesse and detail are close at hand. Tendrils of exotic bunchy spice move through the wine, with glimpses of sandalwood, dried purple flowers, charcuterie, tapenade and the ferruginous stamp of place. What I love about this release is the tension between fruit weight, fine tannin heft and mineral cadence. There is precision and power and that is a very attractive thing indeed. Drink by 2046.

This is all about perfume, with integrated blue and black fruit that shows polish and refinement, plus undertones of mulberry bush, cocoa, crushed stones, fresh herbs and violets. The palate is plush and rounded with no hard edges, showing a silken, creamy texture that flows across the palate for minutes, supported by almost melting tannins. In near perfect balance, with all the hallmarks of a cool-vintage syrah. Pretty, textural and aromatic. Excellent. Drink or hold.

Known for its bold structure and brooding intensity, The Schubert Theorem hails from Marananga's red soils. It’s often the darkest and most muscular of the four, with deep spice and gravelly power.

The 2023 The Schubert Theorem Shiraz is a gorgeous wine. It is silky, inky, pure, black as the ace of spades and long through the finish. The use of concrete egg in the fermentation/maturation stages lends the wine a sense of purity and finesse. It supports a core of crystalline fruit that is wrapped in earthy, grainy tannin and woven together with threads of saline acidity. It has rose petals, detail and delicacy, power and precision. Standish performs somewhat like a Burgundian producer—he works with one grape (I suppose two, if you count the small inclusion of Viognier in the Relic) to express different vineyard sites, soil types and elevations. There's no "declassified" fruit in these wines, no flow-on opportunities to other cuvées, just "make or break" viticulture and winemaking. The ancient terroir of the Barossa is writ large in these wines. It is striking. This 2023 Schubert, despite the cool and wet conditions, is a testament to Standish's clarity of vision. 14.9% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2025 - 2045.

The '23 release of the Schubert Theorem is just gorgeous. It's kinetic. The purest of plum, black cherry and blueberry fruits stretch impossibly long on the palate, with impressive density and a real sense of grace to its travel. The edges are smooth and round here and there is a calmness as it glides across the palate, the tannins more in the powdery spectrum (and I'm sure this comes from the portion that spends its gestation in a concrete Nomblot egg). Bunch (50% or thereabouts) is bang on here, lending a golden ratio of spice, sinew and texture. But man, that pure rolling swell of fruit is the star; this is a wonderfully composed wine. Drink by 2040.

Dave Brookes - James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion

Deeply scented and perfumed, with layered aromas of wild red berries, blueberries, blackberries, bitter chocolate, coffee, black cherries, graphite and licorice. The palate is textural and silken, in near perfect harmony with fine tannins and a rounded mouthfeel cut through by a fine line of acidity. The complexity and integration have built this wine to last for decades, while already offering immediate drinking pleasure from the cool vintage. Excellent. Drink or hold.
