Fresh and juicy with a fruit driven finish.

Matured in seasoned French oak for 12 months. Dense inky black in colour with a deep dark purple hue. Freshly crushed blackberry, liquorice and plum aromas are intermeshed with vanillin cedar and spice notes. Rich blackberry, liquorice and plum fruits carry a juicy feel with spicy vanillin cedar and inky earth elements in the background. Fine grained tannins with a fresh fruit driven finish.

A generous, full-bodied shiraz. Defined by exuberant aromas of lilacs, iodine and purple fruit set in relief against a deftly hewn tannic structure with hints of licorice and a ripple of maritime freshness. Pepper and clove notes grow in intensity as the tannins compress and release flavor in incremental bursts. A warmer climatic expression with a complex, cool aura. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Light in weight yet nicely fleshed, the palate features cherry, strawberry and rhubarb fruits over a subtle dried herb and spicy earth background. Fine grained tannins finishing fresh and savoury.

Chardonnay is the hero at Coppabella but this Pinot Noir does everything that it can to change that narrative. It’s an excellent Pinot Noir. It’s structural, it’s spicy, it has a floral prettiness and yet it feels serious, well-fruited and persistent. You can admire this wine from all angles. It tastes of stewed cherries, fresh strawberries, a run of sweet spice notes and something akin to red roses. It’s varietal, tasty, tannic and more-ish.

Light in body with modest power and a shortish conclusion.

Dark red in colour with black toned edges and a red hue. Nosing reveals aromas of cherry, dried herbs and anise which mix with some confectionary like notes. Light in body, the palate displays cherry, strawberry and anise flavours which meld in to a delicately spiced, dried herb back drop. Modestly powered it has polished tannins and a shortish conclusion.

2023 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Bourgogne Haut-Cotes de Beaune Blanc Au Bout du Monde Magnum (1500ml)
    Burgundy, FRANCE
    $285. 00
    Bottle
    $3420.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

After leaving his family domaine in 2005, Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey has established himself as one of the rising stars of Burgundy. Pierre-Yves has built a strong reputation for crafting exquisite white Burgundy that display energy and vitality. The white wines are whole bunch pressed, fermented with natural yeasts, aged on lees for up to 18 months in mostly in 350 litre barrels with no lees stirring and no filtration. The corks used come from one tiny supplier and are extra long and extra wide (55mm x 25mm) for the village, 1er cru and Grand cru wines and are untreated with no paraffin and the bottles are then sealed with soft wax to ensure no problems with premature oxidation. The resulting wines are built to age classically up to 10 years or more.

Purchased in 2014, and with 2015 the first vintage released, this Bourgogne Haut-Cotes hails from the hillside lieu-dit of En Creuzilly at a height of 420 metres. With more clay in the soils here this wine shows ample depth yet does require some patience before showing all it has to offer. A serious rendition of the appellation.

    Other Reviews....
Ripe and fresh aromas include those of petrol, straw, white orchard fruit and barely enough wood influence to mention. The round, plump and juicy flavors possess reasonably good verve before concluding in a bitter lemon-tinged finale. This should drink well after only a few years of keeping. Drink through 2026+.

The 2023 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Au Bout du Monde offers up notes of green apple, lime zest, white flowers and hazelnuts, followed by a medium-bodied, lively and racy palate. It was still on its lees in barrel when I tasted it.

The 20223 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Au Bout du Monde has an effervescent bouquet with red apple and light nectarine scents. The palate is fresh with crisp acidity and a twist of sour lemon that drives the finish. This is a revivifying Chardonnay with plenty of energy. Drink 2025-2030.

These are mostly from young vines, planted with high quality material in 2015 and 2018 along with a few 40 year old vines. A fine glowing lemon and lime colour. There is more bouquet here, picked later of course, 7-9 September, with classic Colin-Morey tension, more than reduction, yet ripe enough fruit and a sense of vibrancy. Drink from 2026-2028.

A blend of multiple parcels totalling 1.64 ha, but all from this same village’s lieu-dit, with 3 generations of vines. In totality, this is the largest parcel of the domaine at over 1 hectare located at the end of the valley above the village of St Aubin.

Smoky white orchard fruit and floral scents leads to soft and caressing, if not especially concentrated, flavors that exude a subtle bead of minerality on the similar lemon-tinged finale. This could use better depth so 2 to 3 years of keeping should help. Drink through 2027+.

The 2023 Saint-Aubin Village offers up a gently reductive bouquet of white flowers, pear and toasted bread. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and precise, it's long and racy, concluding with chalky grip.

William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2023 Saint-Aubin Village is a blend of four or five parcels. This is already quite seductive with hints of vanilla pod and almond flakes on the well-defined nose. The palate is well balanced, fresh and poised with a keen line of acidity and a malic finale of green apple and pear. The 2023 doesn't quite deliver the complexity of the previous vintage, but it will drink well for several years. Drink 2026-2035.

There was some hail here, so lower yields. More lime than lemon in colour, with a fresh apple fruit to the nose, perhaps some greengage behind, stylish and with good length. Fine tension, still some edges to smooth out, but this should be good. Drink from 2027-2030.

2023 marks Pierre-Yves’s debut release from La Boudriotte, a well-situated premier cru lying just below Les Caillerets on the Chassagne slope. The site is known for producing wines of both breadth and precision, marrying the village’s characteristic generosity with a fine mineral thread, qualities that align seamlessly with Pierre-Yves’s restrained and terroir-driven style.

    Other Reviews....
One plot is in Boudriotte itself and one in Fairendes, vinified together. The Fairendes component is older with very small grapes, so this was vinified as whole bunches, added into the fermentation vat in layers alternating with the destemmed fruit. A deeper more robust purple, a clear heady raspberry fruit, still with lees in suspension, and a tannin or two. Drink from 2029-2035.

In 2014 Caroline took her share of some family vineyards from her father Jean-Marc and created her own domaine based in Chassagne-Montrachet, working out of brand new cellars built for Caroline and her husband.

For her first vintage in 2014 she had small holdings in Chassagne-Montrachet for both red and white together with small holdings in Santenay and Hautes Cotes de Beaune totaling just 2.4 hectares. With more vineyards added both from family and acquisitions in the last few years, the total is now 7 hectares in total for Caroline with roughly half for red and half for whites.

Caroline Morey's Santenay Rouge hails from vines located in the lieu-dit of Le Chainey in the southern sector of Santenay quite high on the slope adjoining Permier Cru Grand Clos Rousseau, and is aged in 30% new barrels.

    Other Reviews....
A medium ruby crimson with elegant red fruit on the nose. Two plots, with a tightness to the fruit, some tannins behind still. Virtually all destemmed for this cuvee. Red fruit returns behind. Drink from 2026-2029.

Caroline sources her Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge from vines located just below the village in Les Chenes Les Pierres and Les Chambres, and is made with 35% whole bunches. Bottling occures in November after 12 months ageing in barrel to capture the freshness, and while a serious example it is often approachable young.

    Other Reviews....
A discreet application of wood is present on the overtly pepper-inflected aromas of earthy and ripe dark berry scents along with a touch of the sauvage. The delicious, caressing and sappy flavors also contrast with the grippy, rustic and short finish. Once again, this robust effort is not particularly well-balanced and my guess, given the relatively easy-going mid-palate texture, is that this is not 'on form' today but may very well come together in time. With that said, for the moment it's pretty awkward. Drink through 2029+.

A notably more floral-suffused nose speaks mostly of red cherry, wild currant and warm earth. The sappy and seductively textured flavors possess solid punch and a subtle bead of minerality that adds a bit of verve to the equally dusty and firm if somewhat short finish. Her philosophy is to craft wines that marry the extraordinary power of Barolo with approachability and the Pira wines are all about elegance, great aromatics and lush textures. This has been achieved through strict vineyard management, careful selection and impeccable vinification techniques. Other Reviews....
The E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis 2021 Barolo Mosconi is structured, linear and ultimately quite mineral in character compared to the Cannubi. Its firm underlying architecture is rendered light and fragrant thanks to aromas of blue flower, grilled herb (with both rosemary and aniseed) and pulverized stone. Fruit comes from a site in Monforte d'Alba at a cool 370 meters in elevation. I came back to this bottle 24 hours after my first tasting and remarked on the elegant, chalky nature of the tannins. 9,000 bottles were produced. Drink 2027-2055.

The 2021 Barolo Mosconi is ample, creamy and resonant in the glass in its first impression. Dark red/blue fruits, leather, lavender, spice and menthol build with some coaxing. There's plenty of Mosconi substance, but Chiara Boschis has done a terrific job in taming the tannins here. This is one of the most refined wines I have ever tasted from the Mosconi cru. Time in the glass brings out the wine's structural presence, while floral overtones and insistent tannins support the driving finish. Drink 2028-2041.

This Barolo opens up with aromas of bright cherries, cedar and a touch of sliced mushrooms. Medium-bodied with incisive freshness. The tannins are restrained, almost timid. The wine is overall compact and solid. Very well constructed and cohesive. Needs three years to soften, but it’s really enjoyable to taste.

With a slightly deeper jeweled ruby hue, the 2021 Barolo Mosconi is more contemplative, offering layered notes of cedar, cherry cordial, Asian spices, sweet herbs, and pressed flowers. It reveals broader polished depth on the palate, with ripe, refined tannins, and a long, even-keeled finish with persistent mineral underpinnings. It is only going to improve as it leans into these more brooding tertiary layers of truffle and leather, and it will be worth waiting for. Drink 2026-2056.

Selected from the estate’s oldest plot within Mosconi, this is the only one of Chiara Boschis’ Barolos still aged exclusively in barriques. The cool, fresh site sees significant diurnal temperature differences typically giving a powerful wine that needs tempering and, above all, time. The 2021 harnesses that vigour and potential masterfully. A marvellous mix of sweet spice, forest roots and stony minerals evoke a palpable sense of territory. Profound in its depths, it boasts juicy acidity with plush tannins you can sink your teeth into. Long, textural and enveloping with dark cherry, plum and hints of bitter cocoa, this is a complete and compelling package. Drink 2027 - 2043.

This wine represents a blend of fruit from various sites, and 15,000 bottles were created. Showing a classical profile, the E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis 2021 Barolo Via Nuova delivers a firm sense of inner fiber and richness with dark blueberry and black fruit. These aromas are enhanced by ethereal tones of blue flower and aniseed. The tannins are slightly more approachable in this wine compared to the Mosconi, but the intensity and richness of the mouthfeel is about the same. Drink 2026-2050.

The 2021 Barolo Via Nuova is a gorgeous, poised wine . Bright and energetic, with tons of drive, the 2021 has so much to offer. Brisk acids and veins of tannin shape this dynamic mid-weight Barolo. Blood orange, plum, chalk and rose petal are some of the many notes that come alive with aeration. An intense Barolo with aromas of Parma violets, cinnamon, restrained blood oranges, cherries and licorice. Incredibly precise and defined. A lifted and energetic Barolo, the 2021 Barolo Via Nuovais boasts a jeweled ruby color and has a fantastic, balanced nose with notes of ripe peaches, sweet sandalwood, floral perfume, and wild strawberries. Medium-bodied, the palate is refreshing and focused, with vibrant acidity, finely coiled tannins, and a long and linear finish. It has a bit more open feel at this stage, but it should have solid aging potential and improve over the next 20 or more years. Drink 2025-2045.

Concentrated yet refined with fresh acidity counterpointing a cream tinged mouth feel.

Produced predominantly from Smith’s vineyard which was planted back in 1978, the vines are tended by leading viticulturalist Mark Walpole who was responsible for introducing a number of emerging Italian varietals to Brown Brothers North East Victorian vineyards during the 1990’s. Together with winemaker Adrian Rodda, one of Beechworth’s emerging stars, they make a formidable team.
Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Fleshy white peach, ripe nectarine, dried honey and biscuity nougat scents permeate the nostrils trailed by some cashew, crème brulee and subtle gun flint notes. Concentrated yet refined, the palate features white peach, pear, nectarine and dried honey flavours over biscuity nougat, faint crème brulee, delicate cashew and infusions of gun flint. Fresh acidity counterpoints a cream tinged mouth feel. Finishes long and finessed.

Twelve months in 300L French Tronçais barrels followed by three months on lees in tank before bottling. Chardonnay, the undoubted strength of Beechworth, was one of the first fruits picked in the '24 vintage at FGR, retaining sensational, energised acidity while keeping a pretty tight flavour profile. Spring blossom aromatics mingle with tangy citrus and white peach, grilled nuts and almond nougat with a peach custard-like texture. Clean as a whistle and bright; it moves in a linear line of brisk acidity, going long and dispensing some tart grapefruit pithiness on the finish. It's early days for this little beauty. Drink by 2031.

Here’s a Chardonnay with plenty of flavour, though it also keeps itself tight and tidy. Peach, pink grapefruit, cedar, spice, a vanilla creaminess and honey florals, aniseed, with a minor amount of struck match. There’s a juiciness to the wine, balanced acidity, a light chalky texture, an oatmeal savoury element, with a flavoursome finish of excellent length. Such a lovely wine to drink. Drink 2026-2032+

    Rich, concentrated and super plush.

First produced in the year 2000, this is the twentieth release of Oliver’s HJ Shiraz. Fruit is sourced from the very best parcels of fruit on the Old Block vineyard planted in 1948 by HJ Oliver. Maturation took place in French oak (35% new) for a period of 18 months.
Impenetrable inky black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Intoxicating dark plum, liquorice, dark chocolate, blackberry and spicy vanillin oak aromas waft from the glass complimented by some earthy mocha like notes. Rich, concentrated and super plush, waves of dark plum, blackberry, liquorice and dark chocolate cast a voluptuous textural feel across the seductive palate. Vanillin oak, mocha and spicy earth elements linger across the back half. Deep and powerful it has silky smooth tannins and a long lavish finish.

From 1948-planted estate vines, indigenous ferment, matured in French oak (35% new). This has classic stylings, richly supple fruit, dusty, earthy scents and dark spices, but the house refinement is also on show. It’s like an old snapshot, artfully colourised. Black and blue fruits, Christmas spices, crème de mure, coffee crema and dark cocoa. There’s richness and a supple flex to the palate, oak suitably matched, tannins cleansingly savoury. It’s a very smart release. Drink by 2034.

    $1320.00 Dozen
    ABV: 14%
    Closure: Cork

Clos Cibonne is one of the most original domaines in Provence, celebrated for its dedication to the rare Tibouren grape and its unique style of age-worthy rosé. The estate, a Cru Classé of Côtes de Provence, lies just 800 metres from the Mediterranean, with vineyards framed by the Maures mountains and cooled by sea breezes and steady mistral winds, conditions perfectly suited to Tibouren’s thin skins and need for ventilation. Fifth-generation winemaker Olivier Deforges now oversees the 15-hectare, organically farmed estate.

The Cuvée Spéciale des Vignettes is Clos Cibonne’s limited production rosé, crafted from the estate’s oldest Tibouren vines (60+ years, on schist soils) with a small addition of Grenache. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for a year under fleurette (thin layer of flor-yeast) in the domaine’s historic foudres, Vignettes shows greater concentration, structure, and ageing potential than Tradition, often rewarding more than a decade of cellar time. It is considered the pinnacle expression of Clos Cibonne’s distinctive style.

Pale copper with restrained aromas of thyme flowers and wild fennel. On the palate, this restraint opens up to an explosion of ripe stone fruit, bruised peaches and apricots, some raspberry fruit and a hint of rhubarb acidity. Pomegranates and rosehips appear on the mid-palate, with barely there tannic grip and a gentle, almost gravelly acidity. The finish is long, intense, and lightly peachy with a subtle salinity. Very classy, moreish, and delivering classic Provence with an upmarket twist. Drink 2025-2035.

This is rosé in a different dimension. Weighty, dark and complex, with concentration to the juicy, dense notes of kumquat, tangerine and melon. Salt, tobacco and toasted sandalwood add savory tones to the round, rich palate, and red tea tannins make for a structured frame. Delicious now, but a few years in the cellar will bring even more complexity. Tibouren and Grenache. Drink now through 2028.

A stony and minerally white with chamomille and hints of pears. The palate is concentrated and flavorful with fresh acidity. Vines are over 80 years old. Tasted from a fairly small pour, and I’d have liked to have got to know it a bit better, but here we are.
Sea spray, lemon and green apple, aniseed and herb perfume, a little spice and nutty character. It’s tight and zesty, distinctly saline, but also has some nutty and creamy characters to offset, there’s some fine chalky grip, and a lively finish of excellent length. Distinctive. The organic Poggio Landi 2018 Brunello di Montalcino does a great job at putting bright fruit in the spotlight, and this is not something that you can always say of its peers, especially in this challenging vintage. Red cherry, raspberry and blackcurrant sit at the core of this wine. Those tones are neatly framed by light spice, pressed rose and candied orange peel. This wine stand outs out in a crowd thanks to its lively primary intensity and its transparent Sangiovese characteristics. The close is lean and streamlined. The vineyard was planted in 1968, a drought year requiring each vine to be hand watered by the family from drums on the back of a tractor, an investment in blood, sweat and tears that has been handsomely repaid. Elegance is not a word usually associated with wines having the dimension of Armagh, but it applies here, yet without betraying the birthright of a wine with exceptional depth to its fusion of dark berries, spices and toasty oak, the latter in the manner of Grange, obvious yet integrated and balanced.      Pale gold. Subtle, soft, sweet orange rind and biscuit notes are overpowered by vanilla and cocoa. Very clean. Medium weight, semi-sweet cereal and biscuit flavours are accompanied by a pleasant spiciness. Vibrant and youthful. Biscuit and toasty cereals repeat on the moderate aftertaste. Uncomplicated everyday drinking. 40% Alc./Vol.

First tasted 31/10/2005... A straight forward whisky that has nonetheless retained its characteristic smoothness that first won it the following of so many. The simplicity of the nose is repeated on the palate with dried fruits and a suggestion of peat. Extremely soft mouthfeel with a faint smokey finish.

It might be me, but it strikes me that ’Fiddich has more heft to it these days, with a sherried element giving the pear, apple, and light cereal of the distillery character a sweet, plump, sultana underpinning. This then adds chewiness to the palate, balancing the dry nuttiness and receding on the finish where those green fruits come through to add fresh acidity. Great balance. 86 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Dave Broom (Summer 2013)

Reputedly founded with almost no capital and only second hand equipment bought from the Cardhu distillery, distillation at Glenfiddich began on Christmas day in 1887. It now boasts twenty-eight stills and is the largest selling single malt in the world and remains the only Highland Malt whisky to be matured and bottled at its own distillery in Dufftown, Banffshire, Scotland.

William Grant, the founder of Glenfiddich was the man behind the success of the brand. However, it was only in 1963 when Glenfiddich was accepted into the blend-dominated English market in 1963, that Glenfiddich re-introduced Single Malts to the world. Glenfiddich was marketed as a 'traditional' Scotch whose taste expressed its origins, much like a great wine expresses its 'terroir'.

Using the ingenuity that Aussies are famous for, the Bundaberg distilling team have created an incredibly smooth rum, using a unique red gum filtration process. The rum goes through a similar double distillation and aging process as standard Bundy UP, but then goes through three separate filtration processes which create an incredibly smooth profile. This process removes some of the stronger flavour compounds which exist in the regular Bundaberg UP, and allows some of the more subtle flavours to shine through. 37% Alc./Vol.

Satsuma plum, rolls of cherry roulade and Assam tea leaf. Some bay leaf, juniper spice and salted licorice. The flow across the palate shows a deft hand at crafting tannins intertwined with bunch work and juicy, ethereal acidity. Ridiculous value! Can I leave the review at that? I had to do a double take when I saw the RRP - wow!  An articulate and expressive wine, this **** take on the classic Australian claret blend is a showstopper. It's a wine you just want to hang out with, such is its approachability and plentiful fruit. The consistency across the range of **** Wines I have seen of late speaks highly of its producer - bravo. And this super blend possesses that Scott Boland line and length reliability and magic.
Dark plums, black currants and a touch of mint from the small addition of Cabernet lie in the shadow of dark berries, plums and chocolate nibs. It's not a showy wine, yet it walks with charisma and a calming presence. A smattering of dried herbs and fine tannins adds a moreish factor on close coupled with that persistent finish. Great stuff and well played. Run to this.

The old Barossa reds were not the blockbuster monsters which are so popular today but rather, sought out a path of drinkability, while never sacrificing flavour. This is a welcome return to the past. There is 15% Cabernet Sauvignon included in the blend, which underwent a two week ferment with wild yeasts. Maturation was in a range of formats with 10% being new French oak. The fruit came from a range of Barossa sub-regions – Bethany, Greenock, Nuriootpa and Krondorf. 1,000 cases. Mauve/magenta in colour, the nose offers notes of blackberries, herbs, plums, mulberries, chocolate, coffee beans and mocha. A lingering finish with sleek tannins ties things together. Good focus here, and fine balance. This is indeed a more elegant style, but it lacks absolutely nothing in flavour. Apparently, Alex must have recently won Gold Lotto. Otherwise, why on earth would he be giving this away at such an amazingly cheap price.

"...a sherry butt away from one of the best new whiskies of the year.” - Jim Murray

Initiated by Distillery manager, John Campbell as a tribute to the managers who preceded him, this Travel Retail Exclusive Laphroaig was left to rest in first-fill, over-charred ex-bourbon barrels before further maturing in large, new European oak hogsheads. The latter provide a slower maturation than traditional casks. This is a newly introduced procedure at Laphroaig, and the result is not only a deep, but also a rich and structured whisky with notes of signature peat smoke, caramelised dark fruits and an oily, woody finish. Fans should appreciate the significantly higher ABV: - 48%, up from just 40% on Laphroaig 10.

Other reviews… almost Laphroaig in concentrated form. The saltiness has receded but is there enough to raise the flavour profiles when need be… a sherry butt away from one of the best new whiskies of the year.” 92.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2018

The GlenAllachie 15 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

Billy Walker's attempt to create "the essence of Speyside" is realised in this heavily sherried expression. The first batch quickly sold out in the UK. The current version features a packaging update that debuted around 2024. All the barrels were sourced from Miguel Martin. Slightly more than half were PX puncheons and butts with the remainder being ex-Oloroso. There's also a small addition of 200 litre medium toast virgin oak in the mix, plus some red wine casks. The result is another whisky where the appearance alone will get your appetite going, especially if you're into sherried malts. It pours a fabulous, deep polished mahogany colour and follows through with aromas of orange zest, raisin cake and fruit’n'nut dark chocolate while offering a decent attack at just 46%. Revealing more zesty freshness, gingery warmth and less of the over-the-top opulence of many recent Glenallachies, the flavour ledger tilts towards oloroso here with an almost tart, peel character competing with the PX. Dates, raisins, roasted nuts and an interesting twist of liquorice carry the aftertaste. All up, a solid sherried addition to the distillery’s ever-expanding stable that fares best after 5-10 minutes air contact. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Lashed with rich sherry aromas of baked orange, cherry, currants, chopped peel, ground cinnamon, and cocoa powder; it’s rich and intense, and pulsing with bold sherry cask character. Dark chocolate and Seville orange marmalade kick off the palate, with Nutella, black pepper, oak, cola, sultana, and some ground coffee flavors. A warming finish with dark chocolate and citrus notes. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...almost five years after it was first introduced, it can certainly compete with comparable single malts – such as the Tamdhu 15 Years, or the aforementioned GlenDronach 15... It's not subtle, but occasionally that's okay. I wouldn't soon call the GlenAllachie 15 Years an easy sipper. No, it's too intense for that. But sometimes intense is good. In moderation. As always. - wordsofwhisky.com

Notes from the producers... NOSE: Overflowing with raisins, butterscotch and sweet spices. TASTE: The rainbow of sweet spices, raisins and butterscotch develops to banana, orange peel and dark chocolate.

"Madeira is Aberfeldy's best friend." – Stephanie Macleod – Malt Master.

Aberfeldy is known for being eminently approachable, possessing some of the same notes that Madeira wine is famed for. It's logical then that Madeira casks make for a complementary finishing, adding an extra layer of complexity and spiciness to the malt. The result is a step up from the standard 12 year old, and at this direct import price, it's cheaper than Duty Free! Expect a lighter style dram where the Madeira casks impart hints of honey and nuts. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... One might imagine that, at the very least, travel retail finishes would be tailored to airports. Here, for instance, Funchal, naturally, or perhaps Lisbon, Faro or… er, Porto. No, forget it… Colour: gold. Nose: a few slightly dirty touches of mustard and aged walnuts—not unpleasant, in fact—dried raisins and toasted almonds, a hint of paprika, then some earthy notes. Quite pleasant. Mouth: pepper, mustard, walnut wine, a touch of burnt caramel and bitter chocolate, with a relatively powerful attack despite the low ABV. However, it quickly becomes rather prickly on the nose and turns increasingly drying, with hints of mushroom. A pity, as the combination is interesting. Finish: rather short, heavily on the Madeira, with Worcestershire sauce at this stage. Comments: one could almost use it in cooking, perhaps in a Madeira sauce. But of course! The 40% ABV is pretty low, that’s for sure, but it’s a nice drop in the end. 80 points - whiskyfun.com

San Giusto a Rentennano, originally a monastery fortified in 1204 by the Florentines as their boundary with Siena, today uses the underground vaults built as part of the fortification as their cellars. For centuries it was owned by the Ricasoli family of neighbouring Brolio, passing to the Martini di Cigala family in 1957. This beautiful 160 hectare estate, with 30 of vineyards, is run by brothers and sister team of Francesco, Luca and Elisabetta. The vineyards enjoy exceptional exposure with considerable day and night temperature differences and the terrain is composed of various soils rich in minerals. San Giusto’s wines are renowned for their elegance, balancing rich fruit and beautiful aromatics with superb freshness.

The San Giusto a Rentennano 2023 Chianti Classico is 95% Sangiovese with 5% Canaiolo in a supporting role. This organic wine is punchy and bright with blueberry, blue flower and iris. It offers pretty freshness over a mid-weight palate and remains approachable for near-term drinking. If you are looking for a Chianti Classico at this price point, this is an ideal choice. It ages in a mix of large oak cask, tonneaux and barrique for 10 months. Production is 44,532 bottles. Drink 2025-2032.

The 2023 Chianti Classico is terrific. In fact, it is one of the most complete wines of the year. Dark cherry fruit, leather, cedar, menthol and lavender all take shape in the glass. The 2023 is dense but not heavy. Even so, I would give it a few years to shed some baby fat. It's an impeccable wine in a challenging year. Drink 2025-2038.
