2023 Bruno Rocca Trifole Dolcetto d’AlbaPiedmont, ITALY$39. 99Bottle$479.88 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkFrom one of Barbaresco’s most respected names, this Dolcetto captures both varietal charm and regional pedigree. Deep ruby in colour, expect lifted floral and dark berry aromatics, with a palate that balances juicy fruit, spice, and savoury undertones. Ripe, velvety tannins frame the finish, offering both approachability now and the potential to evolve gracefully in the cellar.

The 2023 Dolcetto d'Alba Trifolè is a fleshy, expressive wine. Dark blue/purplish fruit, lavender and spice all grace this super-classic Dolcetto. It shows lovely mid-palate juiciness and fine balance, especially for the year. The inclusion of 30% stems works well here. The 12.5% abv is quite rare these days. Drink 2024-2028.

Super savoury and highly appealing from the first pour. Certainly there are dark plums in the mix but also lots of woodsy spices, ferrous earth, wood smoke and some Aussie bush fragrance. Fuller bodied, yet the palate is neatly shaped with grainy, drying tannins and lithe acidity. Drink by 2032.

Red to dark red colour with black toned edges and a vibrant red hue. Perfumed like aromas of violet, wild cherry, strawberry and anise stream out of the glass with wonderful intensity. Some bramble, forest floor and spicy dried herb notes ensue. Delicious wild cherry, strawberry and anise flavours are supple yet simultaneously fresh in their feel across the palate. A very light, bright crimson red. Pure fruited, with aromas of freshly crushed raspberries, summer flowers and a touch of spice. Just as good on the light- to medium-bodied, brightly fruited and silkily structured palate. A wine, as always, to buy by the case and enjoy over the next three to four years! Drink by 2029.

Philip Rich - James Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionRed fruit, cherry, a little earthy, with some cinnamon oak showing, and sarsaparilla. It’s a more fruity and bouncy expression of Hoddles Pinot, some grainy chew to tannin, a bit of sap and orange rind, something of a ferrous edge, with a stiff tannic finish of good length. Needs a bit of time to come around. It’s maybe a little more robust and fruity than is usual for this wine, though it’s still good. Drink 2026-2034.

On the sample labels attached to the bottles of Pinot and Chardonnay, Franco talks about the ‘envelope’ of the wine. I’m not really sure what that means. Maybe he’s getting a lot of fan mail? Franco thinks this is the best Chardonnay since the 2021.
Juicy white fruit, grapefruit, aniseed, a little struck match, almond paste, cinnamon and clove spice. It’s packed with flavour, white nectarine and nutty spicy characters, a flinty grip to texture, quite some intensity and power here, and in some respects it seems more Beechworth than Yarra, or so I think. Pear and citrus, lime rind, with excellent length of flavour. It’s elemental as at now, and a little raw, though I reckon it will deliver with a couple of years in bottle. It’s a cracking release. Aged for a total of seven years, these limited editions are released in runs of around 2200 bottles. 48% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... Fabulous sherry trifle on the nose and a marvelously confident delivery makes for a storming start to this flavoursome malt. Indeed, despite the healthy sherry influence on the delivery, the malt makes its presence felt in both the flavour and texture. However, the bitterness on the finish, almost rubbery at times, compromises the overall balance. That said, the nose and delivery combo is sublime. 86.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024

In tiny distilleries in Switzerland, Sweden, and, er, Swansea, they're throwing the rule book up in the air and creating new whiskies based on how it falls. This has spent four years in a beer barrel and then a year in a port cask, and it's fabulous. Think licorice, aniseed, and cherry-flavored soda. 2022 Southern Light Vineyards Ghostgum Vineyard Main Ridge Pinot NoirMornington Peninsula, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 13%Closure: Diam CorkSouthern Light Vineyards is dedicated exclusively to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, drawn from four distinct vineyard sites across Victoria. Their first release comes from the Ghostgum Vineyard in Main Ridge, with future bottlings to follow from their other sites. The winery, located in Healesville in the Yarra Valley, is purpose-built for small-batch winemaking, where a no-compromise, holistic approach guides every step from vineyard to bottle. Backed by over 50 years of experience across three generations of Joval Wines, Southern Light represents the culmination of a lifelong pursuit of fine wine.
Sourced from low-yielding vines in Main Ridge (just 2.6t/ha), this Pinot reflects a cool, storm-affected vintage that delivered intensity and concentration. Around 60% whole bunch was used across four parcels, matured 10 months in French oak before bottling unfined and unfiltered. Vibrant, perfumed and finely structured, it’s a strikingly pure expression of Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir.
Alc. 13%Other Reviews....
Pitiful yields in ’22 meant Anthony Fikkers made the wine he liked the best: fruit off four blocks, four clones, fermented as one with 10% whole bunches, which still packs a punch; 10 months in French hogsheads, 20% new. It’s such an intriguing wine. An austere style, which is totally legit, full of sichuan pepper, poached rhubarb, a little ashy and stemmy, plus an array of cherry accents. There’s also a strong chinotto flavour with salted, dried Chinese plums. Mid-weighted, a fineness to the tannins, the palate awash with sweet-ish fruit, which offsets the charred radicchio/bitter finish. It will only garner more complexity with age. Drink 2024-2030.

Jane Faulkner - Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionThese Ghostgum wines come from the Main Ridge area of the Mornington Peninsula. I prefer the chardonnay though there are things going on with this 2022 Pinot Noir that make you want to keep returning to it.
This wine is reductive and backward and, as a result, you need to sit with it for a bit. Its charms are not immediately apparent. It carries an iodine note, and the flesh of red cherries, and seaweed-like herbs, and sweet strawberry-wrapped-in-cedar. It’s firm and spicy, a little smoky, and definitely surly. It would be easy to pass this over, in its youth, but there’s something about this wine’s structure and depth that makes you think that it has something good in store for the future. Drink 2026-2032.

Campbell Mattinson - The Wine FrontFrom main Ridge in Mornington comes this thoroughly delightful Pinot Noir. Picked from four blocks with different clones used. The 115 and 777 were picked and fermented together with 10% whole bunch, the D2V5 was 100% whole bunch fermented and the MV6 was completely destemmed. Eventually pressed to French hogsheads and then bottled without fining or filtering. Engaging aromas of sweet raspberry and edgier dark cherry with a slightly iron filings cut to the mushroomy characters. Palate is sublimely integrated with a smooth satiny feel of almost lamb’s wool-like qualities. Lovely wine. Drink 2024-2034.

Interesting background. The vines date back to the late 1800s but were replanted on this Paracombe vineyard in 1990. This is a limited release wine from the best barrels. The fruit is both intense and refined. After vinification it goes into new French oak for 36 months. So, it gets a decent hit, but this is where those century old vines do their thing, ensuring the balance and restraint to avoid a heavy hand of oak. It’s seamlessly and beautifully integrated with a light cedary impact that works well with the intense plummy fruit. Will handle extended cellaring. Drink 2024-2042.

1975 Darroze Domaine de Bellair 49 Year Old Cask Strength Bas Armagnac (700ml)Armagnac, FRANCE$550. 00Bottle$6600.00 DozenABV: 45.5%This addition to Darroze's ongoing 'Unique Collection' of single vineyard, cask strength brandies is one of the oldest releases to date: distilled in 1975 and bottled in October 2024. It's fairly muted bouquet evokes cinnamon and woody/resiny notes alongside tobacco leaf, developing subtle fruitiness (baked pineapple / citrus), but only after ample time in the glass. The initial taste is bold, typically Armagnac, giving more than the resin-laced bouquet with semi-sweet vanilla and caramel-like flavours accompanied by dried fruit slice. Oak and chewy tannins reign in the mid-palate, leaving an attractive coffee-cake and rancio aspect to contemplate through the final stages. Not exactly the pinnacle of Armagnac, but quite good. Where else can you obtain a 49 year old wood aged spirit for well under $1000? 45.5% Alc./Vol. Tasted from a 30ml sample.
Notes from the producers... look for keynotes of fig jam and brioche apple pie in a long and complex delivery.
Francis and Marc Darroze roam the best estates and terroirs of Bas Armagnac in search of the most beautiful and distinctive brandies. Around 30 estates contribute to their "Unique Collection" with each barrel finishing its ageing in the Roquefort and Labastide d’Armagnac cellars. These are rustic spirits, entering the alembic via small vineyards, distilled by reputable mobile distillers, each demanding several decades of careful ageing in oak barrels in order to express a sense of place and vintage. The typical Armagnac grower raises a range of animals fed by many different crops, plus a small vineyard, part of which is distilled every year and aged in one or more barrels which constitute the savings of the farm. A sick bull, a dying horse or a retiring tractor are repaired or replaced by the sale of a barrel. Multiply the number of farms and vintages and you have the dizzying variety of the Darroze collection: Different because each farm is almost as unique as each barrel. Add to this zero reduction (only through ageing), no caramel colouring as well as labeling transparency and you have Armagnacs that are all about the time in oak (once in glass, nothing improves or changes. An 1890 Armagnac bottled in 1900 is no better than a 2007 bottled in 2017, but collectors don't want you to know that!)

First produced in 1862, re-launched around 2015 and named after the Spanish word for Gold, Bacardi Oro is the premium blend from the Bacardi stable based in Peurto Rico. Fourteen young rums make up the mix which is aged for just one to two years adding subtle notes of toffee and muscovado sugar. Filtered once through charcoal for smoothness, expect a lighter, drier style made for mixing.
Other reviews... The Carta Oro despite all of Bacardi’s marketing gimmicks is not a very sophisticated or complex spirit. If you want a strong hit of alcohol in a glass then reach for the Carta Oro. From the intense alcohol fumes on the nose to the strong ethanol notes when sipped and the strong boozy flavours when mixed this isn’t anywhere near as sophisticated as it wants to be. - Experimental de Christian Drouin Foursquare Cask Finish 19 Year Old Calvados (700ml)Normandy, FRANCE$250. 00Bottle$3000.00 DozenABV: 46.8%
Drouin's Experimental Pays d'Auge Calvados is described by its creator as "one of the most intense and rich expressions we've produced in this range." After exploring the islands of Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago and Martinique, Guillaume Drouin was inspired to age a seventeen year old brandy in French oak rum barrels from the famous Foursquare Distillery in Barbados. A seventeen month spell was followed by three months in freshly toasted barrels. The rum imparts brown sugar and vanilla notes, while the toasted barrels enhance roundness and structure. The resulting calvados has aromas of ripe apples, vanilla, caramel and brown sugar, with flavours of tropical fruits, dark chocolate and spice - an exotic marriage and a perfect balance between two worlds. 2396 bottles produced. 46.8% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the producers... On the nose, this calvados awakens the senses with its captivating aromas of ripe and roasted apples, delicate vanilla, creamy caramel and brown sugar. On the palate, it reveals all its richness with suave and harmonious flavors of tropical fruits, dark chocolate and sweet spices. The finish is long and powerful, opening with notes of pine nuts and almond.

2023 Occhipinti Santa Margherita (SM) GrilloSicily, ITALY$132. 00Bottle$1584.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkOcchipinti is one of the hottest names in Italian wines, and their tiny production is highly sought after. Situated a mere 15km from the Mediterranean, the vineyards are 250m above sea level planted to Frappato and Nero d’Avola. Winemaking is natural and hands off, with fermentation occurring spontaneously, no temperature control, no fining, no filtration and only minimal sulphur additions at bottling.
Santa Margherita is a recent addition to the portfolio. The vineyard is located 490 meters above sea level, planted to Grillo, and is surrounded by pine forest, oaks and secular olive trees. Arianna Occhipinti gives her Grillo a short 48 hour maceration, before spontaneous wild fermentation occurs in concrete and oval Austrian oak barrels, and the wine is matured for 12 months prior to bottling.
Other Reviews....
Decidedly savory, the 2023 Bianco Santa Margherita 23 opens in the glass with shavings of raw ginger, dusty dried flowers and a hint of citrusy spice. It is round in feel, with a pulse of saline minerality up front that beautifully contrasts its ripe orchard fruits. Perfumed and exceptionally long, the 2023 finishes with lovely tension, leaving a tinge of young kiwi that fades slowly. The calcareous soils of Santa Margherita ring true in this elegant Grillo. The fruit for the 2023 Farmer’s Heart Grenache was selected from a range of diverse sub-regions within McLaren Vale. These vineyards boast an age range spanning from 26 to 130 years old. Notably, 48% of the blend originates from vines over a century old, while 74% is derived from those over 95 years in age.
Deep dark red black tinged colour with a purple red tinged hue. Aromas of raspberry and red liquorice infused with white pepper sail through the nostrils with some fresh herb, earthy graphite and spice notes also evident. Juicy red cherry, red raspberry and red liquorice fruits decorate the mid weighted palate that has a fresh, lively feel. Extending across the back half are notions of vanillin spice, earthy graphite and pepper. Understated in its power it has good tension and a sturdy yet polished tannin framework. The long finish vibrant, succulent and peppery.

This came off mainly old vines, with 74% 95 years of age or more; matured in older oak. Ripe, but a product of the cool year, this drinks towards mid-weight, with strawberry, wild raspberry, sour cherry, damson, pomegranate and medicinal herbs coiled into a thoughtful and intricate warp and weft of tannin. There’s a pleasing sour-fruited tension to this, which complements the grip, the combination aching for food. The ripeness is à point, the structure bravely savoury and compelling. It’s delightful, but no pushover. Drink by 2030.

Ardbeg Anamorphic Committee Release Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLAND$299. 00Bottle$3588.00 DozenABV: 48.2%The point of difference in Ardbeg's latest Committee release sees the cask heads scored to expose more of the wood's surface area. The cask ends were heavily toasted using the distillery's 'high mocha' toasting process and the inside of the barrels were charred. The process is said to temper the briny overtones, ramp up hidden chocolaty sweetness and magnify sensations of mocha. Bottled non chill filtered at 48.2%. Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... The story with Anamorphic revolves around barrel charring. After removing the heads of classic Ardbeg bourbon casks, they were scored deeply to expose more wood and then intensely charred before being filled. Jack Daniel’s did a similar trick with its Sinatra Select bottlings. Does Ardbeg need more wood on it? The nose of the non-age-stated whisky is every bit as dark and smoky as the classic Ardbegs you know and love, offering a bruising aroma of burnt end barbecue and dying beach bonfire embers. It’s a bit daunting at first, starting off as rather one-note until you let it settle down in glass, revealing more layers beyond pushy smoke. Let Anamorphic rest in glass for a while, lest you down sip after sip of charry, tarry peat, free of nuance. After 15 minutes or so, fruit becomes much more evident, with elements of banana and baked apples, then a significant chocolate quality, ringed with walnuts. There’s plenty of aggressive tar that lingers on the back end, but for many an Ardbeg fan, that’s just what the good doctor ordered. All told, Anamorphic doesn’t exactly shift expectations for the brand, but rather it doubles down on them. - drinkhacker.com
...This Ardbeg comes from ex-Bourbon casks with toasted heads, and the nose has touches of chili-infused chocolate, a hint of anise, and a slightly herbal character. The taste has notes of grilled citrus, chili powder, dark chocolate, cocoa nibs, and a gentle peatiness. The finish is long with a gentle smokiness and touches of dark chocolate and soft spices. Excellent! (October, 2023) 95 points - whiskycast.com
Notes from the producers... Nose: Earthy, dusty, and slightly biscuity on the nose, this is a most curious Ardbeg, almost from an alternative universe. The sooty/tarry notes are clear but restrained, and are balanced out by some silky vanilla. Water opens up a myriad of herbal and floral notes- smoked etiver root, aniseed, fennel, chrysanthemum and jasmine, to name but a few. Palate: The mouthfeel is peppery and warming, and precedes an explosion of fiery, spicy flavours – chili – flavoured chocolate, bitter sweet mocha, briar wood, birch tar, ground black pepper and smoked artichokes. The sooty/tarry notes build up to a crescendo of rich, smoky flavours, with an incredible, lingering aftertaste of charcoal bitter almonds and molasses.

JamesSuckling.com - Southern Comfort Whiskey Liqueur (1000ml)New Orleans, Louisiana, UNITED STATES$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenABV: 30%
In 1874 M.W. Heron, a bartender, developed Southern Comfort in his bar near La Rue Bourbon in New Orleans and first served it in traditional fashion from a whiskey barrel. In 1934 after a short break in production due to Prohibition, Southern Comfort introduced their current distinctive label featuring the now famous Currier and Ives lithograph of a Southern plantation house on the banks of the Mississippi. The plantation is known as "Woodland Plantation", built in 1834. Southern enthusiasts can visit the newly renovated mansion, which now operates as a nine bedroom country inn.
Southern's identity as a bourbon lies only in its origins. Its inception was in an awful whisky batch that Heron was attempting to improve. Actually, Southern Comfort was originally a Peach Liqueur, and one of the few peach liqueurs on the market. Produced using neutral spirit and over 100 ingredients, the final liqueur matured for eight months prior to bottling.
Since then the formula has changed and Southern is now branded a 'whiskey liqueur'. Sweet and rich with a molasses background and faint medicinal flavour, it's America’s “Take it easy Drink”. Enjoy it straight, on the rocks or with cola.
Other reviews... Translucent bronze, Vaporous, perfume, and orange blossom nose. Courvoisier XO Cognac (1000ml)Cognac, FRANCE$250. 00Bottle$3000.00 DozenABV: 40%Before establishing the company in Jarnac, and as his father Emmanuel did before him, Felix Courvoisier worked in close association with the Gallois family, important wholesalers in wine and spirits in Bercy. As loyal suppliers to the Imperial Court, they had been honoured with Napoleon’s visit at their warehouses in 1811. Legend has it that Napoleon made sure to bring several barrels of cognac on the ship which took him to St Helen, a treat much appreciated by English officers who named it 'The Brandy of Napoleon'. Courvoisier exclusively uses Ugni Blanc grapes, from the four finest crus of the Cognac region: Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies and Fins Bois. Courvoisier has contracts with more than 1,000 vine growers’ families, who have been linked to the brand for generations.
The double distillation process is specific to cognac, and takes place in a traditional Charentais pot still made of red copper. Produce from the first distillation, the 'brouillis' is distilled a second time for 'La Bonne Chauffe' (The Good Heating). The distiller must then separate the final product into three parts: the heads, the heart (the young cognac, a clear and pure eau-de-vie at 70% ABV), and finally the tails. The stills work day and night from the beginning of November until the 31st of March. Unlike many of its competitors and because a smaller still allows better control of the quality and complexity of the young cognac, Courvoisier uses only the latter for both distillations.
Other reviews... Showing bright topaz in the glass, this Cognac entices with rich, concentrated caramel and toffee aromas. Fleetingly sweet on the palate, vanilla, mocha and hazelnut lead into a rounded brown-sugar finish punctuated by clove and orange peel. This easy sipper would be welcome at any dessert table. Made with a blend of Cognacs aged 11–25 years. 95 points - wineenthusiast.com
From eaux de vie 11 to 25 years old. On the nose, it’s immediately heavy on almond/marzipan notes, then dried fruits, baking spice, and toasty wood. On the palate, it’s immediately sweet with slightly winey notes, with cherry overtones — bold, but far from overwhelming, and not incredibly complex. A little menthol creeps in on the finish, along with a touch of pepper plus some vaguely soapy notes. All told it’s a perfectly credible cognac, though it doesn’t drink as particularly old or austere. I think it might be the only XO I’ve tried that I’d have no qualms about using to mix a Sidecar. - drinkhacker.com

Plantation Grande Reserve Rum (700ml)BARBADOSReduced from $74.99$64. 99Bottle$779.88 DozenABV: 40%Other reviews... part of the Signature blends which include the Barbados 5, the XO, Grand Anejo and Xaymaca — these are what one might infer are entry level rums for the curious (to call them ‘premium’ would be a stretch). They are neither bartenders’ mixing staples like the Three Star, OFTD or Original Dark, nor expensive limited editions like the upscale Extreme, Single Cask or Vintage series, and exist in a kind of everyman’s universe where “reasonableness” is the watchword. It goes down easy without reaching and that may be the key observation. Overall, it’s a relatively simple rum compared to others I’ve had (including some from Plantation themselves), yet a rum one can, with care and lowered expectations, have neat without too many issues. To be honest, I thought the rum was better than it had a right to be considering the sweetening Plantation is known for... For someone now getting into rum, it’s serviceable and they could use it as a stepping stone to get more into the field, though for getting into the Barbados style it’s useless, so forget that aspect. Those with more experience can use it as a bellwether for what to look for in Plantation’s successively more upscale (and expensive) offerings; and for those who’re really into rums, well, there’s not much to say to them, since they already know all there is to know. - thelonecaner.com
... From just before Plantation became Planteray, for reasons that remain a little unclear to us—though seemingly a bit on the ‘woke’ side. We’ve nothing against wokism, of course, but we do rather like balance in all things and tend to think anything excessive becomes trivial. ‘Does ‘habitation’ still work by the way? Right then, shall we have a taste?... This must be from W.I.R.D., owned by the same fine folks. Colour: white wine. Nose: cooked sugar verging on ‘petit boulé’, sugarcane syrup and a generous splash of orgeat, with a few fluttering florals hovering about—white clover in particular, adding a faint pastoral lift. Mouth: pleasant at first, but the sweetness does rather take over. Think Malibu laced with molasses honey and sweet woodruff cordial. Finish: medium in length, gentle and sugary, with no real parting bite. Comments: clearly meant to be served over a good handful of ice, ideally dragged down to 8°C or so. In that context, it might even do the trick. At room temperature, however, it's a different story altogether. 70 points - whiskyfun.com

Subtlety toasted vanillin cedar, dark chocolate and peppered earth elements lurk beneath with velvet smooth tannins carrying a sturdy underbelly. Concludes long and succulent.

2011 Castello di Monterinaldi Vin Santo del Chianti Classico (375ml)Tuscany, ITALY$94. 99Bottle$1139.88 DozenABV: 17%Closure: CorkThe Castle of Monterinaldi, located in Radda in Chianti, sits in the heart of the historic Chianti Classico region. Managed by the Ciampi family since 1961, the 55-hectare estate includes 18 vineyards and 38 terroirs planted with a diverse range of varieties, primarily Sangiovese. Certified organic in 2017, the estate blends tradition with modern techniques to express classic Chianti character. Wines are matured in French oak and then aged in the estate’s underground cellar to ensure quality and refinement.
Vinsanto is one of Tuscany’s most revered after-dinner wines, made from hand-picked grapes dried on trellises to naturally concentrate sugars. Once optimal ripeness is achieved—after 3 to 5 months—the grapes are pressed and the must is transferred to small oak casks stored in attics, where seasonal temperature swings drive a slow, natural fermentation. Aged undisturbed for 20 years, the result is a wine that rewards patience with remarkable depth and complexity.Other Reviews....
I'm always a huge fan of Vin Santo, and although the number of samples I receive has diminished drastically over the years because the wine has struggled to find a hold in international markets, this remains a very special category of dessert wine made by a handful of passionate producers in Tuscany. The Castello Monterinaldi 2011 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico Occhio di Pernice (in a precious 375-milliliter bottle) is 90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo and 5% Trebbiano. Despite being made with mostly red grapes, it has turned a unique color somewhere between amber and dark gold with a syrupy consistency. Aromas recall forest floor, dried mushroom, honey and dried apricot. This is a tiny production of 1,200 bottles. Drink 2022 - 2045.

Yalumba 50 Years Old Rare Aged Tawny (500ml)Barossa, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenABV: 22%Closure: CorkBeginning in the 1960's, winemakers at Yalumba set aside small parcels of the very best tawnies for extended ageing in barrels crafted by their very own coopers. After five decades, this Rare Aged Tawny release has become rich and concentrated, and is now the perfect accompaniment to hard cheese, quince paste, roasted nuts and salted crackers.
Unbelievable value for a 50 year old fortified!
Other Reviews....
The NV Rare Aged Tawny 50 Years Old is hugely concentrated in all respects. Dark, almost scorched-earth notes join dried dates and figs, yet there's also a searing level of bergamot-like acidity, which helps keep things balanced and (relatively) drinkable. Of course, there's black walnuts and molasses, plenty of rancio character and tremendous length. For pure pleasure, I prefer the 30-year-old bottling, but this is very impressive.

2012 Watt Whisky Dalrymple 11 Year Old Cask Strength Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Lowlands, SCOTLAND$139. 99Bottle$1679.88 DozenABV: 57.1%As Serge Valentin comments in his review below, the principal component here comes from the Grant's-owned Aisla Bay distillery on the Clyde Coast. Five different styles are produced here, but the most common is a light and rather sweet spirit. "Dalrymple" means it's teaspooned, however you could still consider it a single malt as it's likely there's only a trace amount from another distillery. 294 bottles were decanted from a Hogshead at 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... Dalrymple is a trade name for Ailsa Bay, and while our experience with this distillate is limited, a superb Dalrymple from Tri Carragh once left a strong impression. The official Ailsa Bay releases, however, have often been as cold as a North Sea flounder – if I may. Colour: pale gold. Nose: delightful, with an intriguing mix of tequila and gentian—no jest here. Ripe pear and apple follow, creating a harmonious bouquet. A touch of medicinal quality emerges, accompanied by green walnuts and a hint of mustard. With water: develops towards a fine fino sherry. Mouth (neat): very good indeed! Green apple, fir smoke, plasticine, Sichuan pepper, mustard, mezcal, and radish—spicy with a slight bite. With water: the fruitiness becomes more pronounced, but a peppery edge also takes hold. An unusual mix of sultanas and white pepper surprises the palate. Finish: long, with smoke overlaying those peppered sultanas, making for a slightly more challenging conclusion. Comments: the peat runs subtly throughout, never dominating but always present. A complex and captivating dram, perfect for a blind guessing game among friends. 87 points - whiskyfun.com
...At the risk of sounding obtuse, it seems like William Grant & Sons know what they’re doing. (There’s a reason they are the biggest family-owned whisky company in Scotland.) They’ve hit a bulls-eye with Ailsa Bay it seems... Taste: An initial hit of nuts and spices, not my preferred style per se. I find it improves hugely with some water. Thick mouthfeel with a nice chunk of vanilla foam blocks, but also fresh orchard fruits, crème brûlée and even tinned pineapple. Finish: Medium length. Gentle notes of white pepper linger, but are balanced out by notes of peach, peanuts and honey. - wordsofwhisky.com
Notes from the bottlers... Toffee apples, marzipan, honeycomb, peanuts, peaches and crème brûlée.

2018 Watt Whisky Nc'Nean 6 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$159. 99Bottle$1919.88 DozenABV: 57.1%A baby malt from a very new distillery founded in 2017. Nc’nean is located within the Drimnin Estate on a remote west Highland peninsula with spectacular views over Mull and Tobermory. The name is an abbreviation of 'Neachneohain', which translates as 'Queen of Spirits' from Gaelic. This deeply coloured expression from Watt Whisky was STR matured (that refers to casks that have been shaved, toasted and re-charred). The outturn was 282 bottles at 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... Mouth: quite strong, with caramel notes and generous amounts of oak spice. Pepper, cinnamon, oranges, more plums. A bit of a rough edge, with salty notes and a brief moment of alcohol heat. Candied ginger syrup, drops of clove oil and toasted oak, with a slightly tannic edge. Finish: medium and sweet, balancing citrus and oak spice. Very modern and spicy whisky, with a wood influence that I find too obvious, too contrived. STR casks are always a bit tricky and I think other distilleries are mastering them better. - whiskynotes.be
...Nose: The STR cask is in the driver’s seat.... Taste: Big whisky. Or intense more like. Lots of pepper, cloves and oak spices in general. There’s a touch of fudge, but also a slight vinous edge. Then oranges, apricots and more charred oak, followed by chillies and a soft aniseed-y note... It relies a lot on the STR cask, and I'm not sure that is a good thing. - wordsofwhisky.com
Notes from the bottlers... Lots of toffee, peanut brittle, plums, cinnamon balls and charred oak.

2021 Leeuwin Estate Art Series Cabernet SauvignonMargaret River, Western Australia, AUSTRALIA$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 15 Years (2025-2040)ABV: 13.5%Closure: StelvinRich and concentrated yet showing sublime finesse this is a wonderful Cabernet that draws comparisons to the great wines of Bordeaux.
A blend of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Malbec matured for 22 months in French oak. Midnight black dark red core with a dark red hue. A bounty of red currant, violet, mulberry and vanillin cedar aromas engulf the nostrils with a Bordeaux like nobility. Subtle tobacco, earth, bay leaf and spice notes lend further interest. Rich and concentrated yet showing sublime finesse, the mid weighted palate is layered with fleshy red to black currant and mulberry fruits. Spicy vanillin cedar, delicate earth, tobacco and infusions of bay leaf extend across the back half. Beautifully proportioned and refined it marriages power and depth with seamlessly integrated, fine grained tannins. Concludes very long and wonderfully savoury. Outstanding.
Drink over the next 10-15 years.

One of the distinctive features of this wine, and in a way a DNA link to all Art Series cabernet, is its savouriness. It’s the rolled tobacco, nori, iodine and whiff of new leather plus the cedary oak, but these are not separate, they form a whole impression. There’s also the core of excellent fruit, the structure, the supple tannins and the bright acidity. And the joy of drinking it. Drink by 2036.

Jane Faulkner - James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionA fascinating wine which offers all the amazing qualities that Margaret River Cabernet possesses, but it walks the fine line with nuances of Bordeaux, more than most. It works wonderfully well. The wine incorporates 2% Malbec. All up, the wine spends 22 months in French oak. Crimson/blood red hue, it offers entrancing complexity. There are notes of tobacco leaves, black fruits, chocolate, smoked meats, licorice, a touch of ever-so-slightly charry cloves and quality oak, which is superbly handled here. A silky texture, this is a wine of balance and length with the finest tannins. Intensity runs the full length. Eerily reminiscent of an Aussie version of Bordeaux (or possibly a Bordeaux version of Marg River?). Whichever, it is a cracking wine. Drink for twelve to fifteen years. Drink 2024-2039.

Ken Gargett – WinePilot.comImmediately captivating: the nose is vibrant and energetic, while simultaneously the epitome of elegance and poise with restrained fruit power. This is a silk evening gown of a wine: form-fitting, precisely tailored, mellifluous and effortlessly chic. Abundant in aromatics and lifted perfume, fine red fruits include wild strawberry tip, bramble and just-ripe blackcurrant, alongside hints of piquancy: Szechwan pepper, clove and a fine dusting of deep, lightly toasted cocoa powder. There’s a charismatic iodine weave, the savoury and slightly saline minerality proving a foil to both the fruit flesh and the floral hues. Displaying extremely fine-grained tannins, it's firm, focused and delicate, with a graphite line, fresh acidity and plenty that will reveal itself in good time. Tasted pre-release. Drink 2024-2046.

DecanterThe 2021 Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon is lighter in color and tannic intensity than the 2020 tasted beside it. No surprise for the vintages that birthed these wines. The latter was sunny, hot and dry, while the 2021 season was decidedly cooler, with more cloud cover and rain. This wine bears the fruits of the diligent labor in the vineyards and is one of the shining lights in the region this year. There are notes of raspberry and nori, moss and petrichor, blood and forest floor. This is a lighter style of Cabernet—and a lovely one at that. Drink 2025-2041.
