A blend of fruit from the home block at Wonga Park and two different sites in Gladysdale. A light, bright crimson. Composed, with aromas of lightly poached red fruits, rose petals and delicate spice. The light- to medium-bodied palate is finely tuned. Finishes with silky smooth tannins that you barely notice. Not a blockbuster. Very nicely done.

Handpicked and destemmed before stalks were added back to selected parcels to generate complexity. These Estate pinots from Levantine emanate the prettiest perfume of purple flowers. Deeply enticing with dried orange rind, souk-like spices, raspberry and alpine berries. Tannins are finely woven, binding both savoury and fruit elements together. The steady thrum of turned earth and leaf litter, maitake mushroom and the gentle buzz of white pepper make for studious lessons in graceful tension. Drink by 2034.

    Sauternes, Bordeaux, FRANCE
    $1599. 00
    Bottle
    $19188.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

As the only Sauternes property classified as Premier Cru Superieur, drinking a bottle of Chateau d'Yquem is an experience unlike any other. Situated in the epicentre of prime sweet wine production in France, their unique position and wealth of soil profiles allows d'Yquem to produce wines of enormous complexity with consistent accumulation of botrytis often in years when others struggle.

The 2022 Chateau d’Yquem is a vintage shaped by extremes—the driest and hottest year on record at the estate, with an exceptionally early start to the season. Noble rot developed late, and a dramatic shift in mid-October led to rapid concentration, resulting in Yquem’s most opulent wine since 1945, with 160 g/L residual sugar. Despite the richness, meticulous blending and shorter elevage ensure remarkable freshness and balance in this extraordinary Sauternes.

    Other Reviews....
A blend of 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc, the 2022 d'Yquem is a strong candidate for the title of wine of the vintage. Exhibiting a remarkably delicate, complex and energetic bouquet of rose, confit citrus, exotic fruits and orange marmalade, it's full-bodied, dense and deep with a pristine balance enhanced by a fleshy core of fruit, bright acids and beautiful, gastronomic bitterness and dry extracts that segue to a long, ethereal, delicately perfumed and refined finish. Lorenzo Pasquini and his team have perfectly understood the vintage by privileging the third tries, fully exposed to Botrytis cinerea, in the blend, bringing density and precision along with an energetic and splendidly balanced interplay of bitterness and sweetness. Residual sugar levels reach 160 grams per liter, marking it as the second-highest since the iconic 1945 vintage. Drink 2034-2074.

Yohan Castaing - Wine Advocate (Jan 17, 2025)

The 2022 Yquem is a blend of 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc with 160 g/L residual sugar and a total acidity of 5.39 g/L. It is the first certified organic vintage for the estate and has the lowest level of total sulphur ever: 234 g/L, high within the sphere of wine but comparatively low for Sauternes. The 2022 was aged for 24 months in new barrels that underwent slightly less drying than those used for red wines in order to retain some green tannins. Given the growing season, the 2022 Yquem has a surprisingly understated bouquet that demands coaxing. Scents of orange pith, passion fruit and quince are exquisitely defined, a hint of chamomile dancing around in the background. The palate is medium-bodied. Given the high level of residual sugar, what is surprising is that the 2022 does not seem a weighty or texturally unctuous Yquem, yet there is an intensity and concentration that is arresting. Vivid flavours of clementine, wild honey, quince and tangerine that effortlessly combine. The acidity almost nonchalantly counters the sensation of residual sugar, so it feels less than it actually is, the scintilla of salinity toward the finish tempting you back for more. This is a marvellous and quite cerebral Yquem for which patience is required. Drink 2030-2100.

    Neal Martin - Vinous

A perfect Yquem again after the 2021, which is fresher and more refined than the 2022. The perception of sweetness is super-knit. Lots of botrytis, with turmeric, saffron, cream, roasted meringue, pine nuts, spices and dried mangoes. This is a powerful, seductive and lush wine. Ornamented and richer this year than 2021, but there is so much charm and harmony. Long and spicy, with a hint of petrol at the end. Wow. The second most concentrated Yquem after 1945, according to the winemaker. About 160 grams of residual sugar. So approachable now, but better in five or six years. It will live forever.

    James Suckling

Combining incredible power, sweetness, and opulence with racy acidity and a touch of bitterness on the backend offsetting all the rich, honey-slathered fruits, it takes only a single sniff and sip to discern that this is one of the great vintages produced by Chateau d'Yquem. That says a lot, considering all the fabulous vintages the estate has crafted. The palate showcases its wealth of honeyed fruits alongside Indian spices and a vibrancy found in no other sweet wine. The wine envelops your palate, teeth, and gums leaving you with a zesty finish that lingers for a full 60 seconds and more! This is a legend in the making! Like all great vintages of Chateau d'Yquem, you can enjoy this with pleasure in its youth, with its sweet, ripe fruits showcasing a unique sense of honeyed purity, or you can save it for your grandchildren. Drink from 2027-2100.

Light and scrumptious with zippy mineral laced acidity.

Feudo Montoni enjoys a long history in the Valledolmo region of central western Sicily. Their cellars are housed in the baglio (typical Sicilian court square building) built by the noble Arogenese family in 1469. The property was purchased by current owner and winemaker Fabio Sireci’s grandfather Rosario in the late 1800s.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with a faint greenish tinge around the outskirts and a watery hue. Pear and lime aromas infused with fresh herbs jump out of the glass followed by some guava, green apple and slatey mineral notes. Scrumptious lime, green apple and guava fruits are underpinned by zippy mineral laced acidity. Infusions of fresh herbs and a stony saline like element linger across the back half. Finishes dry and crisp with a zesty lime and saline driven conclusion.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.

The nose sparkles with fresh yet savory aromas of lemons, limes, herbs and a nutty cheesiness, but also has a delicate, balancing floral sweetness. The palate is dense, as stone fruit joins more citrus and floral notes, before salted nuts usher in a tangy, mineral finish.

This is a vermentino that you should buy and drink. It tastes of citrus and crushed grapefruit, but it's the balance of it, and the mouthfeel of it, and the way the ripeness of the fruit works in so beautifully with the round-edged bitterness of it, that makes it such a source of pleasure. Sourced from 30-year-old vines and over 100 years of expertise between the four generations of family winemakers at Redman. Matured in French oak for two years. 2021 The Redman is displaying its excellent vintage in a purity of just-picked blackberries, wild raspberry and persimmon. Christmas cherries, rosella florals and blood plums. It's slinky as it winds down the palate. Pulpy red fruits sit generously in the middle. Oak imparts classic baking spices, nutmeg, cinnamon and ground ginger. Tannins have relaxed and have melded nicely into the wine – they provide a structured framework whilst feeling shapely and satisfying. Geoff Weaver's first plantings of sauvignon blanc were in '78. This has texture and interest on its side, elevating the variety to something special and more substantial. It does show off benchmark characters of lime, passionfruit and just-ripe pineapple with sniffs of cut grass and basil herbal elements. The palate follows suit similarly, but with more depth than expected, a clatter of limey-briny acidity amongst fruitiness and subtle river-pebble mineral notes. It floods the senses, finishing long and refreshing. Very good. Drink by 2028.

Sourced from a single vineyard located in the Greenock sub district, it’s matured for 19 months in French oak of which 10% is new.

Rich, plush and sensuous across the medium to full bodied palate, expansive spicy dark plum, liquorice, black cherry and blueberry fruits overlay a dried herb, scorched earth, subtle black olive and peppered dried meat back drop. Shiraz sourced from the Materne family vineyard in Greenock; matured in a 3000L French oak vat and puncheons. ******* have been in fine form lately and this shiraz from the western Barossa is on song. It's got a real ferrous, meaty edge this year which is really appealing. Fruit all pure plum, blackberry and black cherry with hints of dried herbs, roasting game meats, earth, olive tapenade, wood spice and pressed flowers. Powdered, sandy tannins, fine, lacy acidity and a core of fruit that travels long and true on the finish. Drink by 2040.

This is the eleventh release I have seen of this wine and this 2023 from a cooler year is easily the best.
From a single vineyard planted in 1988 just to the north of Greenock, this patch has been farmed by the Materne family for four generations. It sees a seasoned 3000L French oak vat and puncheons (10% new) for 19 months prior to bottling (unfiltered).
What a start! Dried violets and purple flowers, baked blueberries and mulberries – the opening is fragrant and oh-so inviting. The shape and weight are guided by the 13.6% alcohol and the flow it delivers is blisteringly good. Davidson plums, blue and purple fruits mingle with melted chocolate, black earth, twigs and floral tea. Juicy and devilishly moreish, it moves and sways about with supreme ease. The longer it sits, the more detail comes to the fore. Char, pan juices and cola cling to a captivating finish brushed with delicate spices. A long, moreish length oozes class. Brilliant stuff.

The 2019 Les Forts de Latour appears to have tightened up a little since I last tasted it a few years ago. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of sweet cassis fruit mingled with hints of cedar, iris, orange zest and new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and nicely concentrated, with a ripe core of fruit underpinned by chalky structuring tannins. While it's approachable after a decant, it certainly merits additional patience. As readers will remember, this bottling mostly derives from dedicated parcels located further inland from Latour's famous "Enclos," next to Château Haut-Batailley. Drink 2029-2050.

The 2019 Forts de Latour is a tannic, backward wine, as it has always been. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, graphite, sage and mocha open with a bit of coaxing. Even so, the 2019 is incredibly tight at this stage. Despite its imminent release, I would not dream of touching a bottle any time soon. Rain just before harvest in this warm vintage helped keep things in check and resulted in fairly generous yields of 45 hectoliters per hectare. At the same time, the mid-palate is a bit compact, while the tannins are imposing. Drink 2029-2049.

The palate is fully textured, opening gradually to coat the cheeks and tongue in a fine layer of chalky tannins. Juicy and succulent through the mid-palate, it bursts with citrus zest, orange and lemon pith, cranberries, and red cherries. Oh look at this wine coming in at a heady 13%. Joe is flying into the Danger Zone, like Kenny Loggins, although the label says it goes well with ‘Russian Hip Hop’. Unusually this is from down south, Coal Valley, rather than Tamar.
This has a bit more flavour than is usual, and the acidity seems a bit keener too, and really drives the wine along. There’s white peach, green apple, a saline edge, a flicker of aniseed and spice, along with some oatmeal savoury stuff and samphire. Sports some grapefruit and lemon peel on a finish of intensity and excellent length. Even as a young wine it offers complexity and no shortage of interest, though I reckon it may be better again with another year or two in bottle. Very good.

Rich, concentrated and opulent with a long juicy yet slightly chewy conclusion.

A blend of 75% Shiraz and 25% Grenache sourced from vines between 50 to 100 years old. The Shiraz component which is matured for 16 months in 2-3 year old French (80%) and American oak (20%) barrels lends backbone, flesh and body to the wine. Whilst the Grenache which sees no oak contact brings a soft, vibrant juiciness.
Midnight black core with a dark red black tinged hue. Elevated dark to black raspberry and liquorice aromas lead the way trailed by some dark cherry, scorched earth, vanillin spice and blackpepper notes. Rich, concentrated and opulent in its feel across the medium to full bodied palate, succulent black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits hold sway over a vanillin spice, scorched earth and pepper background. Outstanding power and depth with a sturdy yet polished tannin structure leading into a long juicy yet slightly chewy conclusion.

Centurion estate vines on deep sandy soil; matured in old French puncheons for eight months. Elegant and fragrant, and savoury with it, flush with amarena cherry, fresh redcurrant, strawberry, cranberry, rhubarb, cinnamon, musk, rosewater and sumac. This is expressly pretty and lithe, eschewing heft for vigour – with a finely structured line of nebbiolo-esque tannin – and that feels a function of site, vintage and vine material as much as purposeful stewardship. It’s no blockbuster – if that’s even relevant these days – but it surely is a lovely, lovely thing. This is an address on the rapid ascent. Drink by 2030.

This has all the hallmarks of modern-day Grenache in the high quality spectrum from this area. It’s expressive, and light-footed, though at no expense to power and detail. 100 year old bush vines rooted in the coveted sandy soils of Blewitt Springs at the Larnook vineyard. 25% whole bunch and matured in old French puncheons for eight months. Lifted white pepper sits above red cherry, strawberry, raspberry, rhubarb and sweet pops of plum before an emergent savoury drive of warm sand and tilled earth builds beneath. Air unlocks further earthen notes along with rhubarb and a subtle saline twang adding allure. There’s an interesting interplay of red fruit compote, earth and spice that packs this with interest and intrigue. The palate is svelte, fine and restrained while still brilliantly intense with unmistakable old vine depth. Raspberry, plum, warm sand, and white pepper sit within fine, powdery tannins and red fruited acidity. The finish is long and wonderfully poised. There’s fine detail here, and excellent complexity. A classy release of excellent depth and character.

A classic, elegant Coonawarra Cabernet that shows ample richness and depth.

Dense inky black heart with a deep dark purple black tinged hue. Red to black currant, red liquorice and mulberry aromas swamp the olfactory senses followed by some dusty vanillin cedar, subtle tobacco and gentle bay leaf notes. Elegant red to black currant and red liquorice fruits line the palate framed by sturdy, fine grained tannins and a youthful freshness. 21 days on skins and matured for 16 months in new and seasoned French oak hogsheads and barriques. The colour is a deeply pigmented magenta. The purity of just-ripe, immaculate blackberries, currants and plums is astounding. It’s almost stark in its pureness of fruit and restraint of oak additions. Elongated tannins and lingering acidity with Nyon olive brine, nutmeg and the slightest touch of fresh picked bay leaf. Confident and completely unsullied. Stunning now and will only improve with age. This is a testament to scintillating fruit and the winemaker’s appreciation of it. Drink by 2038.

This is the 67th vintage of this famous Australian wine first made in 1954, sourced from the best fruit of the Terra Rosa strip through Coonawarra. There have been some truly exceptional Black Labels over the years, and this is certainly right up there with the best of them. Typically, elegant and stylishly refined with bright fruits a feature. The fine tannin and oak combination support the firm thread through the core. It’s a wine with remarkable ageing potential. In fact, there are few better value cellaring wines than this icon. Drink 2024-2054.

As one might expect, this possesses the spiciest nose to this point with its wonderfully floral red berry fruit aromas. The borderline painfully intense flavors possess a super-sleek and chiseled mouthfeel that is akin to rolling small rocks around the mouth on the dusty, moderately austere, compact and built-to-age finale. I would strongly recommend not touching a bottle of this beauty before at least 10 years have passed. Drink through 2034+.
