A concentrated and viscous, honey drenched Sauternes with a long, decadent finish.

Many experts consider Chateau Haut Bergeron to be the best of the non classified Sauternes. Part of the secret of the success of Robert Lamothes and his sons Patrick and Herue is the terroir. The 28 hectare vineyard is split on such a way, that part of the vines are in Barsac, (next to Chateau Climens), part are at Preignac and a large slice next to Chateau d’Yquem. At one stage the label used to boast this fact, with the words 'CONTIGU d’YQUEM'. Son, Herue is a dedicated and passionate winemaker who ages wine in 25% to 50% new oak casks. The exact percentage depends upon the vintage conditions.
Bright yellow straw gold tinged colour. Intoxicating scents of honeyed apricot and peach are complimented by dried pineapple, toffee apple and spice notes. Boasting outstanding intensity, the viscous, honey drenched palate is draped with mouth coating flavours of honeyed apricot and peach which are complimented by pineapple, marmalade and toffee apple characters. Fresh underlying acidity counterpoints the thick, luscious textural feel. Finishes long and decadent.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

Other Reviews….
The 2022 Haut-Bergeron has a perfumed bouquet with well-defined yellow plum, butterscotch and light saffron scents. The palate is well balanced, fresh and pure, with a fine acidity and impressive tension. It's focused with crème brûlée and caramelized pear notes on the finish. What a lovely Sauternes. Drink 2028-2048.

Neal Martin - Vinous

A blend of 85% Sémillon and 15% Sauvignon Blanc, the 2022 Haut-Bergeron reveals a fresh, delicate and complex bouquet of ripe orchard fruits, grapefruit, exotic fruits and lovely spicy notes. Medium to full-bodied, dense and enveloping, it achieves perfect balance with bright acidity, a stunning texture from Botrytis cinerea and a long, ethereal finish tinged with mango. This wine is undoubtedly a superb value and one I would eagerly add to my cellar. Drink 2028-2042.

Yohan Castaing – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate

Spiced golden berries, quince and honey follow through to a medium-to full-bodied palate with sweet, almost luscious fruit. Balanced and creamy, with medium acidity and good flavor complexity offsetting the sweetness. Good length. Drink now or hold.
