Shiraz was first brought to Australia in 1832 by James Busby, unwittingly with the help and co-operation of the French themselves! Today, Shiraz has become the country's most planted variety, synonymous with the ultimate expression of Australian red wine making. Icons such as Penfolds Grange and Henschke Hill of Grace are now highly collectable and recognised amongst the world's great wines. It remains our biggest selling varietal.

The spiritual home of Shiraz in Australia remains old vine vineyards in the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. Central Victoria also leads the charge, however, newer regions such as Margaret River, Heathcote and the Yarra Valley (Victoria) are taking Shiraz in alternative directions. Top producers include Torbreck, Sons of Eden, Standish, Greenock Creek, Mr. Riggs, d'Arenberg and Kay Brothers. Also look out for wines from France's Northern Rhone. Leading appellations here are Hermitage and Cote-Rotie. Other appellations such as Cornas, St. Joseph and Saint-Péray produce full bodied, early drinking reds that offer a great introduction to the region's style.
