2022 Domaine Billaud-Simon Valmur Chablis Grand CruChablis, FRANCE$320. 00Bottle$3840.00 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
Once again moderate wood is present on the cool if ripe and vaguely exotic aromas that feature notes of pear liqueur, green fruit, spice and seashore hints. There is almost painful intensity to the larger-scaled and overtly powerful flavors that terminate in a chalky, youthfully austere and compact finale that also flirts with rusticity. This is impressive and very much a classic Valmur. Drink through 2032+.
92-94 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundValmur receives the same as Bougros for elevage, so no oak thus far.. Glowing fresh pale yellow. An interesting zesty citrus rind nose, unexpected for me or this vineyard. A rich texture on the palate shows the grand cru, ripe citrus notes, if a little heavy in the flesh. Drink from 2028-2034.
91-94 points
Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyCreamy but with crisp acidity and a long, fresh finish. Lots to like. Still has plenty of warmth. Purchased grapes from the north-facing side of Valmur. Billaud-Simon produces its Valmur and Blanchot with unusually shaped vats designed to enhance the effect of maturation on fine lees. Drink 2025-2031.

2022 Domaine Billaud-Simon Vaudesir Chablis Grand CruChablis, FRANCE$310. 00Bottle$3720.00 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
Very generous wood frames overtly exotic-suffused nose of mineral reduction, white peach, apricot, pretty floral and ample spice wisps. There is excellent punch to the refined middleweight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the lingering, firm and built-to-age finale. This too needs to develop more depth so more cellaring is in order plus it should help to better integrate the wood as this is pretty oaky today. Drink through 2030+.
92 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundLemony colour. A touch of the wet wool reduction, more usual on a wine with greater age, but not in itself suggesting evolution. This wet wool aromatic is really just a sulphur compound, I believe. Then very spicy behind with a raft of white fruit energy and good acidity. Hangs on in well, plenty of latent concentration, just closed at the moment. Drink from 2028-2038.
94 points
Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundySunny, warm, toasty and plenty of acidity. A grand cru with power yet retains plenty of finesse and purity. Partly matured in barrel, the oak is certainly evident, although Olivier Bailly says the wood will virtually disappear after a year in bottle. Drink 2025-2032.

From grower and estate vines with whole berry and whole bunch carbonic maceration, extended time on skins (four to five weeks), with one grenache parcel at 25 weeks; maturation in 3500 and 5000L foudre, eggs and puncheons. Tempranillo leads with cherry, anise, cola and black plum accented by spicy stem and skin notes; the grenache percolates up with wild raspberry and rosehip notes while giving the palate a more open feel, moderating its partner’s tannins through the middle, cleaning up the tail and giving this real gastronomic purpose. JamesSuckling.comThe 2016 Champagne Vintage Brut is the new release and is composed of 70% Pinot Noir from Verzy and the rest Chardonnay from Chouilly. A slightly richer golden straw hue, it has a floral bouquet on the nose and is a very pretty vintage of this wine aromatically. It’s sappy with lemon confit and is salty throughout the palate, revealing the weight of the Pinot Noir but retaining wonderful freshness. This lovely wine is going to take some time to open aromatically, but it’s going to be worth the wait. Drink it over the coming 15 years. 2008 Single Malts of Scotland Glen Elgin 13 Year Old Australian Exclusive Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$169. 99Bottle$2039.88 DozenABV: 56.5%A more quintessential Glen Elgin would be hard to find.
The official importer of The Single Malts of Scotland range has landed another very desirable Australian Exclusive. 260 bottles of this underdog malt from Fogwatt in Speyside are on offer. Revered by blenders, Glen Elgin's forte is its fruitiness - and the best examples are not just fruity, they're lush. Clear wort, a long fermentation time and slow distillation help shape its signature profile. Condensing then takes place in worm tubs adding body and complexity (it remains one of only a handful of distilleries that still uses worm tubs). Official bottlings are a rare sight these days with only a 12YO in production as part of Diageo's Hidden Malt range. In this Bourbon matured expression, the nose speaks of honey drizzled cereals and ripe cantaloupe. The oily delivery is gorgeously textural, thick, fruity and long with ripe pears and poached apples balanced by a flash of tangerine zest and a gentle tannic grip. There is a strong semblance to high class Linkwood, Cragganmore or even some Clynelish in its delicious, almost tropical fruitiness and threads of beeswax. If you've never tasted this style of malt, here's a perfect place to start. A more quintessential Glen Elgin would be hard to find. 56.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Notes from the importers... Nose: Pear drops, waxy apple skins, paraffin candles, cinnamon sticks and creme brulee coalesce in a portrait of apple strudel dusted with icing sugar. Taste: Creamy and tropical, notes of juicy pineapple and strawberry cream combine with freshly baked apple pie and rich vanilla. Absolutely gorgeous! Finish: Juicy, creamy and light - medium length.

No.4 in Drinkhacker's Top 10 Gins of 2024.
Other reviews... Hendrick’s Gin and its Cabinet of Curiosities line of special editions continues with this fifth release, Grand Cabaret, the first wandering of master distiller Lesley Gracie into the world of stone fruits as botanical ingredients. You won’t miss those stone fruits — they’re evident from the moment you pour the gin from the bottle. On the nose, bold notes of cherry and peaches are prominent, evoking fruit brandy more than any gin you might be imagining. Some blossom elements provide a slight break from the exuberant fruit notes, but they are comparably mild in relation to the bolder, juicy fruit quality. The palate holds no surprises: Slightly sweet, it’s a fruit bomb that again drops a torrent of peach, cherry, and some tropical elements on the imbiber. Florals are present mainly in the form of lilac and lavender, with orange and cherry blossom also in the mix. Juniper and the signature cucumber of standard Hendrick’s aren’t notable here until the finish emerges, where some gentle green herbaceousness finally shows its face. Still: Red fruit dominates, through and through. As gins go, this will be far afield from anything remotely familiar to most, but it’s certainly charming as a diversion and works very well in long drinks (think soda, cranberry juice, Prosecco, or ginger ale — or a combination of these). Whatever you do, don’t even think about using it in a martini. - drinkhacker.com

Alc. 12.5% - Glengyle Distillery Kilkerran 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - 2024 ReleaseCampbeltown, SCOTLAND$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 46%
The Kilkerran brand has been described as "Springbank's big middle finger to the SWA" for trying to screw them out of a regional designation. In 1998 the Scotch Whisky Association decided to cease referring to Campbeltown as a whisky region. Two distilleries (Springbank & Glen Scotia) simply weren't enough. Prompted to restore the Peninsula's reputation, Hedley Wright, the owner of Springbank envisioned Glengyle as a project to cement Campbeltown as a region proper, rather than just an extension of the Lowlands. Its whiskies are now on just about every malt maniacs short list. Many who were lucky enough to be acquainted with Springbank's output a decade or so ago appreciate that Kilkerran is essentially a slightly less peated version of the same malt - for less dollars. The same distillery team run both operations. There is a slight difference in the production process but the upshot is a lightly peated West Highlander with fresh citrus notes and an oiliness on the palate, plus a little briney, coastal character. Because its profile clocks the range of flavours found in single malt Scotch, it is in many ways quintessential. The 12 year old is the perfect introduction. The 2024 edition was matured in 70% Bourbon and 30% Sherry casks and bottled at their standard strength of 46% without chill filtration. Experience has shown that the best time to buy it is at the start of each allocation cycle while the opening prices hold. Global demand for this distillery is already catching up with Springbank.
Notes from the producers... Initially zesty with citrus notes of lemon cheesecake and an oiliness typical of a Campbeltown whisky. Peat smoke, leather bound books and peppery, spicy notes develop over time, along with sweet sticky toffee pudding. The peat smoke carries through to the finish in campfire embers, with sweet hints of pecan pie and butterscotch.

Mouth filling peach and green to red apple fruits overlay an apricot, delicate honeysuckle and spicy ginger back drop. Nicely textured with fresh underlying acidity and a dry yet juicy fruit driven finish.

Vine ages vary from 25 to 100 years. Various winemaking techniques are employed, with 30% whole bunches included and maturation taking place in mostly large, seasoned oak for a period of 8 months.
Rich and juicy yet complex, fresh and savoury, this is a splendid rendition of Syrah.
Impenetrable inky black colour with a deep dark red black hue. Dark plum, liquorice and subtle blueberry aromas show wonderful fragrance out of the glass with hints of violet, smoky vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered earth notes also chiming in. Rich, juicy dark plum, liquorice and blueberry fruits carry a plush feel across the medium to full bodied palate. Adding further interest are some black cherry, spicy vanillin cedar, scorched earth and peppered fennel elements. Ripe, slightly chewy tannins extend across what is a long, fresh and generously fruited yet savoury finish.

Syrah from both the Barossa and Eden Valleys with pure, lush, dark plum, blueberry and mulberry fruit tones with hints of exotic spice, struck flint, dried herbs, wildflowers, crushed granite, charcuterie and dried citrus rinds. Full bodied with a calm, graphite and sage-flecked stony flow on the palate. Jeez, it's easy to drink, with a bright mineral cadence, powdered granitic tannins and just a touch of morello cherry as it slides away.

Lifted by younger Shiraz from 2018, 2019, and 2020, it’s rich, dark, and vibrant with a balance of sweetness, bright acidity, and fine tannins. Best enjoyed well-chilled with good company—perfect with roast meats, cheese, or as an indulgent finish to a meal.

Who doesn’t love a good spurgles (sparkling Shiraz for the younger brigade)? Apparently, quite a few people, but as they say in the classics, more for us. This is a non-vintage style with material dating back as far as 1996. The reserve wines were blended with 2017 Shiraz as a base. An inky opaque purple, the flavours move through liquorice, chocolate mud cake, cloves, mocha and coffee beans. This is bright, ripe and rich, and of course, wonderfully exuberant. A sparkler of medium length, this is quite delicious.

The 2022 vintage marks 50 years of Wirra Wirra Church Block, the first vintage being produced back in 1972. A blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Shiraz and 7% Merlot matured for 12 months in a combination of new and seasoned French and American oak barrels.
Midnight black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Blossoming from the glass are attractive scents of red to black currant, mulberry and red liquorice which are trailed by some vanillin cedar, earth and spice notes. Rich red to black currant, red liquorice and mulberry fruits meld into a vanillin cedar, earth, dried herb and spice back drop. Boasting excellent intensity and a seamlessly integrated fine grained tannin structure it finishes long and refined. One of the best Church Block’s for quite some time.

A vintage that marks an incoming winemaker and a culling of lesser quality fruit. Cabernet and shiraz, the Aussie archetype. Consummate, medium-bodied and savory, with better tannin management than what I recall of past vintages. Bay leaves, currants and iodine, with licorice tannins serving as gentle directives to good, supple length. An everyday claret for the sophisticate, with a strong maritime feel. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

A delicious fusion of fruit, savoury delight and earthiness, this GSM is absolutely humming. Raspberries, baked blueberries and mulberries are the beating heart of this wine. There is a fabulous tempo and vibe about its carry as it moves and sways through the mouth with ease. The palate is blanketed by generous medium-bodied fruit with fine spices clinging to the edges and tingling long. An earthy undertow courtesy of the Mourvedre is measured and harmonious. Each part of the blend works in unison rather than seeking the limelight and that's precisely why I can't get enough of it. A clever wine that has been made and blended exceptionally well. While the origins of this domaine date back to Charles-Louis-Noel Billaud in 1815, it's the current generation winemaker Samuel Billaud that has made waves with the exceptional quality of his wines produced since the creation of this project in 2009. Following the sale of the family business Domaine Billaud-Simon to Faiveley in 2014, Samuel received further prized parcels of land and now makes wines from five of the grand cru vineyards, and five of the top premier cru vineyards. The wines are vinified in a mixture of stainless steel and large old wood barrels, the latter mainly for the premier and grand cru wines.
Other Reviews....
As one would expect in a vintage like 2022, there is a suggestion of the exotic lurking in the background of the ripe nose of white-fleshed fruit, wet stone and shellfish scents. The rich, full-bodied and overtly powerful medium weight plus flavors coat the palate with sappy dry extract while delivering fine length on the balanced finale. This does however need to develop more depth though that should reasonably occur if allowed at least a few years of bottle aging. Worth checking out. Drink through 2030+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundBottled in May after 18 months. Clear pale colour with a little light lime touch. This stands back, suggesting that it really needs to be kept. An elegant, pure and beautifully airy nose presents ripe but wonderfully fresh aromas of mineral reduction, acacia blossom and oyster shell trimmed in enough wood to merit mentioning. The racy and borderline painfully intense middleweight flavors exude a bracing minerality that adds a sense of lift to the detailed, focused and lingering finale that is neither especially dry nor austere. Other than a trace of backend warmth, this is a classic MdT though one that could use better depth, so a few years of patience will be necessary. Drink through 2030+.

This is aromatically quite similar to the Bougros with ample wood if a bit more floral and citrus elements in play. The sleeker and finer medium-bodied flavors also possess excellent volume as well as more evident minerality that adds lift to the attractively textured and sneaky long back. Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2022 Chablis Blanchot Grand Cru, located mid-slope from 30-35-year-old vines, has a very complex bouquet: Granny Smiths, struck flint, hints of oyster shell and seaweed developing with time in the glass. There’s an inherent complexity to this chardonnay.
