Liquorice, black cherry and blackberry aromas show impressive intensity out of the glass trailed by some spicy vanillin cedar, scorched earth and blackpepper notes. Rich blackberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits have a youthful inkiness to them with spicy vanillin cedar, earth and blackpepper the undercard. Sturdy fine grained tannin structure with a tense yet refined pepper laced finish.

Mainly from vines around 50 years old, and all estate fruit on terra rossa soils. A little less new oak this year (20%) but same élevage at 18 months. The cooler year has presented a finer, more fragrant offering, with wild red berries and cherries, dried herbs and subtle earthy complexity. It’s a very charming wine, more to medium weight, that bears the current-day Coriole stamp of light-handed making, framing fruit and vintage. Drink by 2030.

100% Touriga Nacional, sourced from the Bassham Family’s Organic and Biodynamic vineyard. One of Portugal’s most revered grapes, Touriga Nacional is famed for its perfume, structure and depth. Destemmed fruit was lightly foot-trodden to release juice for wild fermentation, with the ferment hand-plunged twice daily. After 14 days, the must was basket-pressed into 500L puncheons (10% new oak) for 10 months’ maturation, before blending in tank by gravity.
Deep dark red black tinged core with a dark red hue. A mix of morello and black cherry scents greet the nostrils followed by some scorched earth, leather and spicy dried herb notes. Morello cherry and plum fruits drive the light to mid weighted palate with some liquorice, earth and spicy dried herb elements sitting in the background. Fine grained tannins with traces of leather emerging across the elegant medium length finish.

Very long and extremely mineral finish that lights up the sky like fireworks. A cuvée of wines from the Grand Cru villages of Cramant (60%) and Chouilly (26%) with wine from the 1er Cru village of Cuis (14%), the oldest vines dating back to 1911 and 1913. Drink or hold.

Kooyong Estate Pinot Noir comprises fruit from their Meres, Haven, Ferrous and Nord blocks offering an overall expression of the Kooyong vineyard. Partial whole bunch fermented with maturation taking place in French oak barriques (14% new) for a period of 12 months.
Dark red in colour with black toned edges and a light red hue. Fragrant violet, dark cherry, strawberry and subtle rhubarb scents sail through the nostrils with plenty of intensity followed by some brambly cedar, dried herb and spice notes. Savoury dark cherry, strawberry and rhubarb fruits carry ample richness in their supple flow across the palate. Brambly dried herb, forest floor and spice elements also chime in. Polished fine grained tannins with an elegant medium to long finish.

The adjectives get a real work out with this little beauty, but suffice to say that is one tightly layered, complex, energy-driven, totally delicious youngster. Brings together all the class you might expect from Mornington Peninsula’s signature red grape with a vibrancy that entices. Dusty red cherry, cranberry, leaf, potpourri, rose and gentle spices light up the scent. It’s a most welcoming introduction and, from there, it moves into a beautifully expressive palate lit up in aromatics with a touch of violet and delivered with nicely judged oak. Acidity runs bright through the finish. Drink 2025-2034.

Lot 'B' 12 year old comes with a swag of rave reviews from blind tasters, including 90-95 points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine (winemag.com), 98 points - Beverage Tasting Institute (tastings.com), Best in Class Gold Medallion - 2008 IWSC (iwsc.net) and a Trophy for Worldwide Whiskey - 2008 IWSC (iwsc.net).Some have asked, "Why is this whiskey drawn from 'Lot B' every year and not some other?" Apparently, the designation derived from an original 'Lot A' released only in 1991. For every subsequent release, it's been called 'Lot B'. More on this subject from straightbourbon.com: "I’ve always assumed that Julian III went through his stock of barrels that were older than the 10 year range and took the barrels that he did not think were worthy of continued aging for inclusion in future PVW releases and bottled those as Lot B. With Lot B indicating that they weren’t his best juice. At the time of the 1991 release of course there was no such thing as PVW as it hadn’t been released yet. I believe the first ever PVW release was in 1994. So maybe in 1992 he had decided that he would start setting aside his best barrels for future super premium older releases, and decided to start bottling those that didn’t make that cut as B then?"
One responder who actually emailed Julian Van Winkle for an explanation confirms: "It's pretty much to that affect, Lot A was small and ran out quickly. Lot B was much larger and by time those barrels ran out, everyone got so used to his 12 year old release being called Lot B that the name stuck so as to not confuse anyone." Hence, the designation is pretty much meaningless, except from an historical perspective.

From the United States’ largest independent family-owned spirits producer and marketer, Heaven Hill Distilleries, Inc., Parker's Heritage Collection is a limited annual series of rare, aged American Whiskies that pays tribute to 6th Generation Master Distiller, Parker Beam's 45+ years of service.
...If you haven't had a lot of experience with American malt whiskeys, this one might be a little bit of a shock for you. While it has flavor similarities to bourbon, there’s no confusing the two. Light notes of toffee and butterscotch are present alongside notes of grass and cedar. Even though the mashbill consists of 65% malt, the sweetness from the corn still pulls through. This creates an interesting interplay between the sweet and oak notes. Overall the palate’s flavors are on the mellow side, which makes it very drinkable, though I do wish it had more richness in its flavors. It might not be a very complex palate, but all of the flavors do an ample job of standing out on their own......At 108 proof, the finish is surprisingly smooth and very drinkable. It rapidly expands and contracts in your mouth and then lingers for a good amount of time afterwards. Oak once again dominates, but the other flavors from the palate blend together and help counter the oak’s at-times brashness...It’s a nice oak-foward finish with just the right amount of accompanying flavors to produce a satisfying conclusion... 3.6 out of 5

GC is Nick Farr’s tribute to his father Gary and what he has achieved in the Geelong region and also what he has contributed to Australian Chardonnay and Pinot Noir over a 40 year career. The wine is matured in French oak, 35% new, for approximately 10 months.

This wine was surprisingly delicious straight from the fridge. Likewise, straight out of the box the wine was also wonderful. It showed me the complexity of the wine and the depth of flavour too. A wine balanced with acidity and richness. There are notes of lemon and vanilla custard, chantilly cream and dry tropical fruits. Despite the two notes of dairy, there is nothing garish about the wine, nothing buttery or overblown. And, whilst it is full of flavour, so much of that generosity is driven by ripe fruit and beautifully handled acidity. The GC chardonnay is a wine that offers Chardonnay expression with flavour, and it does so unapologetically. There is, thankfully, a way for these top end wines to taste of the grape that makes them, without the baggage of winemaker artifice.
I’ve spoken before of the hand of Farr, and the ease with which these wines dance so intricately and beautifully with the appearance of ease. It is this simple elegance that is the skill, and the intricate complexity, that doesn’t appear to be so, that is the joy. As always the GC is a benchmark wine for Chardonnay lovers.

The initials RP stand for Robyn Pamela, Nick Farr’s mum and matriarch of the Farr family. The fruit for this wine is sourced from the Côte Vineyard, it’s a close-planted parcel on an exposed slope, with hillsides facing north, northeast and east comprising of the most suitable clones, rootstocks, trellising and management you’ll find on the Farr’s landscape. Fruit is handpicked and sorted in the vineyard, then fermented in an open-top fermenter. Between 40 to 50% of the fruit will be destemmed and then cold soaked for four days. Maturation takes place in 50 to 60% new Allier French oak barrels for 18 months.

The nose of this wine is endlessly complex, as the previous wines were, but it is more fully resolved. In that I mean it is riper, less herbal, softer and more fully formed. The wine makes you salivate, and is the very type of wine that helps define vinous descriptors like “peacocks tail”. In the abstract sense, these words, like so many others, seem like flummery, but the description comes from the sense of a broadening and greater intricacy, and indeed volume, that the wine exhibits. It is how the wine delivers more beauty towards the “end” of the palate, as it is swallowed. The RP is seamless. I can’t find anything to fault in the RP, it is luxurious and the zenith of Pinot Noir expression in my opinion.

A touch over 2.5 acres, the Tout Pres vineyard has three individual soil types across a three-sided cirque (an amphitheatre-like valley head) that rises above the other vineyards. Each slope consists of a soil type. The largest slope is black volcanic soil of limestone, the second is quartz gravel mixed with red ironstone soil and the third, an iron strand in grey sandy loam. Being the most densely planted vineyard on the estate the soils and intense competition force the vines to work hard, resulting in fruit that is lush but masculine and provides the coveted structure found only in the most age worthy wines. Tout Pres is fermented with 100% whole bunches and is matured in 100% new Allier French oak.

Tout Pres always seems more delayed in how it reveals itself. This shyness most obvious in the nose, not least as that’s the first interaction you have with it. The wine always sits a little lower in the glass than the others, it feels just out of each. The palate gives more immediate notes of peppery spice, not pepper so much, but a prickly, tighter spice with a little more attack. There is a dried earthy note here, some cola, dark cocoa and black cherries. It feels almost brittle at times, certainly in its youth, but you wouldn’t mistake that for delicacy. It’s hard to describe it, but the wine is confident and deliberate, but there is something about this wine that is fragile too. The chalky texture of this wine, paired with the crisp yet fine acid, couldn’t be better. I imagine is this part of the wine gives that sense of fragility, it feels like the wine snaps on your tongue. I love it.

Very violet and very mineral, this serious Cote du Py has all the depth and energy that we expect from this appellation. The really elegant medium-bodied palate has a pronounced mineral acidity, and the tannin structure builds to an imposing crescendo in the long, compact finish. A cuvee of four plots. Drink or hold.

The nose captures the varietal spices and the dark, plummy blackberry notes that you expect, with a little meaty game. The palate opens to reveal ripe red fruit characters, with just a hint of spice and a touch of ironstone. Tannins are slightly chalky, and the oak is neatly engaged, as a result of 13 months in new and seasoned French oak hogsheads. It’s soft and generous, with good cellaring potential for the next 10 years. Drink 2025-2035.

Finessed and polished it has seamlessly integrated, fine grained tannins and a beautiful underlying freshness. We have notes of mocha, spices, plums, coffee beans, chocolate, blackberries, tobacco leaves and aniseed. A richly flavoured palate, which is really rather attractive. Good focus, balance, and length with silky tannins. There is generosity and richness here. Cracking value to enjoy over the next six to ten years. I know there can be a reluctance to give wines at lower price points high scores, but this one deserves it. Drink 2024-2034.

The vines are on average 35 years old, and they are farmed traditionally and naturally, with neither fertilizer nor herbicide. Green harvests are carried out in the summer when necessary. All of the vines are harvested by hand. In the cellar, the work is carried out with the same level of precision. The grapes are entirely destemmed the vinified in concrete vats. Alcoholic fermentation lasts around 15 days, with pumping over and punching down every day, and the temperature is checked every day. When it comes to pressing, the team decants the wines for 12 hours in vats and then barrels (50% of which are new for the grand crus and the premier crus, 30% for the villages and 10% for the Bourgogne Hautes-cotes-de-nuits). The elevage lasts 15 to 18 months, with the barrels (mostly Tonnelerie Rousseau) being topped up once a week and racked two or three times during the entire period of elevage.

Les Charmes is located just below the village almost exactly half way between the two Grand Crus of Chambolle-Musigny, Bonnes Mares and Musigny. It's also very close to the Les Amoureuses premier cru vineyard, which explains which this is always one of the most highly favoured sites in the commune.

Laurent Roumier has a superb holding of just over half a hectare of vines which was replanted in 1975 and is located in the lieu dit of Grand Maupertuis in the higher part of Clos Vougeot bordering on to Grands Echezeaux, not far from Musigny. This parcel was worked en metayage by Georges Roumier from the 1950’s and was transferred to Laurent Roumier from the 1997 vintage. This is a remarkably rich deep and stylish wine that would put some notable Musigny’s to shame.

Laurent Roumier's holding of Bonnes Mares is just 0.14 ha of vines planted in 1938, and produces around 3-4 barrels (900 bottles) of this wine in a good year. This holding was inherited from the Georges Roumier estate and is situated in the heart of this Grand cru site with these vines located between the holdings of de Vogue and Frederic Mugnier. Shows great depth of colour with beautiful fine aromas of rose petal, all perfume and finesse, yet very deep and intense on the palate with remarkable persistence and power.

There is however a bit more volume to the vibrant and stony medium weight flavors that display noticeably more depth and persistence on the nicely balanced finale. This is an excellent Bourgogne. The palate is well balanced with dark berry fruit and a touch of cola. This has fine weight and focus, though perhaps it will require a couple of years to fully integrate. Drink 2027-2034.

The palate is silky-smooth on the entry and the 60% new oak is just a little "vocal" at the moment, imparting a seductive lactic element toward the finish. That will be subsumed with time.
