2020 Torbreck The Laird ShirazBarossa Valley, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$850. 00Bottle$10200.00 DozenCellar: Drink now - 10 Years (2025-2035)Closure: CorkA monumentally sized Shiraz that’s pure decadence.
In Scottish terminology, ‘The Laird’ refers to the Lord of the Manor. This single vineyard Shiraz comes from an old vineyard in Marananga planted in 1958, a plot which remains the focus of envy amongst many of the region's winemakers. Previously owned and operated by the legendary Malcolm Seppelt, the vineyard was purchased by Torbreck in 2014 and is perfectly sited with the dry grown, original Barossa clone vines facing south east. The berries are typically small and concentrated and usually harvested in two separate passes.
The French oak selected for the maturation of this wine is considered to be some of the finest in the world. Referred to as Dominique Laurent's 'Magic Casks', the wood is selected from the incredibly tiny and highly prized Troncais forest. The staves are hand split in the French tradition and twice as thick as machine split staves. As a result of the extra thickness the barrels are able to sustain an extended maturation process due to the tighter porosity that comes with the extra wood. Maturation took place in the new hand crafted French oak barriques for a period of 36 months. The barrels were stored in their own temperature controlled, ancient stone shed. In short, no expense has been spared.
Impenetrable pitch black heart with a very deep dark red black tinged hue. Engulfing the olfactory senses are heady aromatics of blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and dark chocolate complimented by vanillin oak, earthy mocha and spice notes. Decadently rich and possessing a vintage port like density and concentration, the monumental palate is overwhelmed with lavish dark plum, dark chocolate and toasty vanillin oak flavours. Earthy mocha, traces of leather and spice also chime in. Boasting dynamite like power and a voluptuous texture it has a velvety yet muscular tannin structure. Finishes with explosive length and incredible persistence.
Drink over the next 8-10 years.
Alc. 15.5%Other Reviews….
The 2020 vintage was the third in a string of dry hot years, and this was marred by disastrously low yields, owing to heat and 80 kilometers per hour winds during the flowering. The 2020 The Laird is from the Gnadenfrei vineyard in Marananga, planted in 1958. The Marananga growing area is known for producing powerful, muscular, tannic Shiraz, and I tend to find the full-throated shout of flavor and concentration to be both convincing and a little exciting. The Laird does exactly this, holding back for no person and providing no subtlety nor mystique. Tasting it, one wonders if these things are strictly necessary anyway; here, we have unbridled power and intensity, old-vine tannic thrust and a black hole of impenetrable fruit, with notes of peat, leather, peppercorns, sweet roasted meat, pan juices and forest moss. It's an iconic wine that has retained its soul and purpose over the years, decisive, distinct, potent and precise, haunting and evocative. The dry-grown vineyard has been there longer than many of the people saying it can't be done. There's something in that. 15.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2025-2050.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine AdvocateIntensely focused and powerful, with densely packed aromas of blackberries, licorice, graphite, olive tapenade, cured meat, roasted coffee beans and violets. The palate is full-bodied with firmly framed tannins and a deeply viscous yet refined mouthfeel that gives layer upon layer of cedar, bitter chocolate, walnuts and baking spices. Made from vines planted in 1958. A savory, powerful wine with a with a high level of sophistication. Drink or hold.

2020 Torbreck The Forebear ShirazBarossa Valley, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$850. 00Bottle$10200.00 DozenCellar: Drink now - 20 Years (2025-2045)ABV: 15.5%Closure: CorkBy any measure a mind blowing example of Barossa Shiraz.
The second release of this new flagship addition to the Torbreck portfolio, the Forebear is a single vineyard Shiraz that dates back to the 1850’s and pays homage to generations of Barossa vignerons. Maturation takes place in new French oak barriques for a period of 24 months.
Super dense inky black core with an equally deep dark red black hue. Wafting from the glass with extraordinary force are potent aromas of dark plum, liquorice and blackberry which are complimented by some vanillin cedar, earthy fennel, subtle dark chocolate, leather and spice notes. Exceptionally powerful and intense yet showing more refinement and freshness than the Laird, ultra rich dark plum, blackberry, liquorice, blueberry and dark chocolate flavours coat the palate with a tidal wave like energy. Extending across the back half are spicy vanillin cedar, earthy fennel, delicate mocha and pepper elements. Opulently textured and dense yet highly finessed and seamless it possesses beautifully polished, tightly structured tannins. Concludes with stratospheric length. Hold onto your hats when you drink this!
Drink over the next 10-20 years.

The 2020 The Forebear is sourced from the oldest plantings in the Hillside Vineyard in Lyndoch—12 rows planted in the early 1850s. For this tasting, the wine has been open now for three hours, and yet it needs more in the way of oxygen than what it currently has. The wine remains aromatically closed, with notions of black fruit, exotic spice, charry oak and forest floor. This has peat, old leather, jarrah and black cherries in profusion. The palate is shaped by intense graphite tannins, which feel closely knit and exclusively the property of old vines; they are silty and settle in the mouth—if you need a visual—like watching a pint of Guinness settle in the glass. A monumental wine, it needs space and quiet to be able to absorb the layers of complexity and undulating waves of flavor through the finish. 15.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax. Drink 2025-2040.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine AdvocateComplex aromas of blackberry compote, roasted coffee beans, iodine, graphite, olive tapenade, dark chocolate, blood plums and baking spices. The palate has a deep, luscious mouthfeel with firmly framed tannins that lead into a viscous and textural finish. So much concentration and old-vine character that is built for the ages. Exceptional. Made from vines planted in 1850s on one acre in Lyndoch. Drink or hold.

Located in Victoria’s Western District, about 150km south-west of Melbourne, Irrewarra is a distinctive vineyard surrounded by volcanic plains and inland lakes. Exposed to the elements, the site benefits from high natural rainfall, adding to its cool-climate charm. Planted by the Calvert family in 2001, the vineyard features 6 acres of Pinot Noir and 2 acres of Chardonnay, all on own roots. Positioned on a slope overlooking two large lakes, the site expresses remarkable varietal character and complexity. Now under the care of the Farr family, Nick Farr manages the vineyard with the same attention and dedication as his Geelong estate.

Spice grip and char then softness, then more tart bright sinewy notes. The nose is petals and perfume, then darker, richer barrel notes. It has a really lovely aroma. Actually, calling it lovely diminishes it somewhat, this is unique, complex and entirely appealing for those looking for something more from a glass of Pinot Noir. There is a different oak profile maybe, something smokier, something more angular. It really works with this wine, even if I’m wrong about the new oak regime. Whatever it is, be it new or just more present, adds a layer to this wine. The Irrewarra only improves with each vintage, it seems, and this is no different. I sat with this for a little while and those spice notes just kept delivering, and each sip or sniff offered something new and delicious.

I had to check the notes for the previous release to make sure I wasn’t indulging in hyperbole two years in a row. The 2024 Irrewarra Chardonnay is brilliant. Lovely white gold in the glass the palate cool from the fridge yet immediately giving. It has a softness that defers to finer notes of acidity, ripe citrus and barley sugar; delicate honey and creaminess. In a world where making everyone happy is next to impossible, this wine, in my opinion, goes as close to universal appeal as it can. Generosity combined with finesse, flavour and restraint. It may seem contradictory, but this is a wine in which you see that conflict play out in the glass. It’s very, very delicious. As always, the big problem will be getting enough to drink and also keeping some in the cellar. I found myself glugging rather than sipping, as it is such a pleasure to drink.

A.D. Rattray Cask Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLAND$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 46%Double Gold Medal Winner in the 2016 & 2017 San Fransisco World Spirits Competition.
Yet another independent bottler hits Australian shores, boasting a strong reputation for quality. Founded by Andrew Dewar Rattray in 1868, the company began trading as an importer of French wines, Italian spirits and olive oil. More importantly, the firm established itself as a specialist in the field of blending and storage of malt and grain whiskies. After several changes in ownership, it returned to the family and is presently owned by Tim Morrison, previously of Morrison Bowmore Distillers and fourth generation descendent of the founder. The company’s resurgence came about in 2002 with the bottling of a ‘new’ Stronachie. In April 2004, using his extensive industry knowledge, Morrison then bottled a selection of his own handpicked whiskies and the A.D. Rattray Cask Collection was born. Plans for their new Glasgow-based distillery were approved in 2014.
Peated to 35ppm, Cask Islay is assembled from up to twenty casks from the one distillery, mostly x-bourbon barrel matured, though some ex-sherry hogsheads are reportedly in the mix. It is unashamedly Islay in its semi-sweet, sooty peat character that's complexed by suggestions of orange cake, cough lozenge, hints of smoked fish and later, banana cake. Because this series is bottled at 46% with zero chill filtration, the whiskies are surprisingly concentrated. Here, the medium dry, spicy profile features sooty malt and vanilla with some apparent sherry influence towards the finish as this gets more dried fruit-like. There's also real staying power with Fisherman's Friend carrying the aftertaste. A sit-back-and-relax island treat at a very reasonable price. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

...A.D. Rattray! Glad to meet one of their recent bottlings, I had thought they were, well, gone. Or busy with the Outer-Mongolian market. We had an early batch of their Cask Islay in 2011, and thought it was pretty good (WF 83). Colour: white wine. Nose: reeks of young Caol Ila, which can’t be bad news. Apples, garden bonfire, seawater, whelks, oysters, fresh almonds, and lemons. There. Mouth: purrfekt, with some impeccable ashy smoke (very CI indeed) and more almonds, lemons, apples, and those tiny green crabs that people would rather throw into wild broths and soups. Oh and apples, naturally. Okay, I had mentioned apples before. Finish: rather long, very ashy, kippery, and with apples and lemons in the aftertaste. Comments: a great batch despite the youth and the (relative) simplicity. Not much depth, but all the rest is perfect. Welcome back, A.D. Rattray! 84 points - whiskyfun.com

A.D. Rattray Cask Speyside Sherry Finish 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 46%The ten year old predecessor to this edition received praise from the likes of Jim Murray (89 points). This latest Cask Speyside ups the age statement and includes a spell in sherry casks. The rich, spiced berry flavours make an indulgent contrast to the refreshing citrus flavours of the ten. Un-coloured and non-chill-filtered, it's good to see Rattray maintaining the higher abv in this super value series. 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Despite the finish, it got a lot of sherry, modern profile, of course. More in the direction of PX, very sweet, toffee, orange peel, apple and almonds. On the palate there is a clear hint of oak, a bit bitter, slightly tingling, very spicy, again orange or orange jam and a hint of red fruit. Quite long finish, spicy, slightly bitter, warming. The 46% drinking strength is just right. Imho did the finish right here for the malt. - whiskybase.com
Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Almond icing, dusted cinnamon, red apple and blackcurrant. Palate: Cherry plum, spiced honey and zesty orange marmalade. Finish: Rolling gently through subtle spice to a lightly tart, bramble conclusion. Spiced berry, citrus and orchard fruit.

"...no arguing with the extreme — and perhaps unmatched — value it offers in single malt Scotch." - drinkhacker.com
While not well-known in Australia, overseas Speyburn has long been considered one of the better values in single malt Scotch. The tenner comes matured in both x-Bourbon and x-Sherry casks and offers a light to medium-bodied dram with a friendly fruity-cereal character. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... A sweet, creamy dram matured mainly in bourbon casks and some sherry casks. The nose has honey, vanilla, flaked coconut, lemon biscuits, and apple Danish pastries. Vanilla fudge, lemon bonbons, white chocolate, toffee, sweet oak, and cracked peppercorns continue the sweet flavor profile as it melts into butterscotch sauce and crème brûlée at the swallow, with vanilla seeds on the finish. It’s impossible not to like it. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com
...Tasting it fresh in 2023, we find a whisky with an outsized nose of fresh granary notes, showing as a bit leathery at times, with the lightest touch of smoke evoking aromas of smoldering underbrush. No fruit, no real sweetness, just the essence of cereal. The palate kicks in with more to offer, though the grain-heavy backbone is never out of focus. Well-roasted cereal, almost overcooked at times, find room for some brighter notes of applesauce, a squeeze of lemon peel, and some sugary shortbread character. Uncomplicated as it develops, the finish melds sweetness with cereal notes, eventually developing into something resembling sweetcorn, served on vanilla wafers. That vaguely smoky quality lingers, however, keeping things in a savory check. All told I am distinctly less enamored with Speyburn 10 today than I was a decade ago, though there is still no arguing with the extreme — and perhaps unmatched — value it offers in single malt Scotch. - drinkhacker.com

Layered with deep, succulent fruit this is a terrific Cotes du Rhone from the family behind one of Chateauneuf du Pape’s greatest estates.
Midnight black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Sailing through the nostrils are elevated aromatics of black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry infused with herbs du Provence. Some scorched earth and pepper notes are also evident. Rich, juicy black raspberry, liquorice and ripe black cherry fruits explode across the palate with plenty of intensity and power. Lending further nuance are notions of scorched earth and peppered dried herbs. A fleshy mouthfeel is counterpointed by slightly chewy tannins. A Chardonnay to get the mouth watering. The scent of sea spray and rockpool is inviting, so sunny and fresh, with peach, nectarine, concentrated citrus, nougat and gently nutty oak. Luscious, generous and well-trimmed in bright acidity, the palate features some nicely worked winemaking overlay – including nine months in French oak barriques, 28% new – and complexity cast across summer stone fruits, lemon sorbet, lime peel, hazelnut and floral citrus blossom. A warm, buttery texture is well countered on the finish with neat line of lip- smacking quince tartness. The quintessential Margaret River Chardonnay. Drink 2025-2033.

Jeni Port - WinePilot.comOne of the best chardonnays yet under this label. But you expect that with mature vineyards, a great vintage and continually refined winemaking. Explosive and powerful, it extends with real purpose to a long though still linear and defined finish. One of the best.

If this chardy were in a rock band, it would be more than a backup singer to the lead vocals of Heytesbury – it would also belt out a few solos. It has its own voice. A little fleshier with white stone fruit but, of course, it comes with grapefruit and ginger flowers, fennel fronds, some neat phenolics and oak spice, the acidity pure and fine. It has delicious leesy/smoky/flavours. It’s a lovely drink and there's no need to wait to drink it. Drink by 2033.

The 2024 Gruaud Larose shows excellent potential, bursting with notes of cassis, pencil shavings, iris and violets. Medium to full-bodied, suave and seamless, it's ample and pure, with a precise, refined pro-life and good persistence on the finish. A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, it is the fruit of a growing season defined by fully 30 organic phytosanitary treatments and a harvest that concluded on October 8. It checks in at 12.4% alcohol and pH 3.77 (for Gruaud, a rather low number).
92-94 points
William Kelley - Wine AdvocateThe 2024 Gruaud Larose is very fine. Dark and ample, with gorgeous presence, the 2024 has so much to offer. Dark blue/purplish fruit, new leather, gravel, spice, lavender and dried herbs build effortlessly. Readers will find a Saint-Julien endowed with notable textural depth. The finish is perhaps just a touch narrow, but élevage may very well help with that. Drink 2034-2054.

Antonio Galloni - VinousGorgeous dark ruby colour with vivid reflections, slow and steady reveal of grilled earth, savoury rose bud, peony, black tea and floral Cabernet finesse. This is a little softer than the recent exceptional vintages of Gruaud, but the fragrant aromatics have a ton of charm, and this shows skilful construction. Harvest 27 September to 8 October, 3.55pH, 31hl/h yield, slap bang on the appellation average, organic certified. 40% of production in this 1st wine. 95% new oak for ageing. Drink 2030-2040.

Profound and very beautiful aromatically. Yet slightly introvert and a little closed at first. Damson, blueberry and black berry, black currant and subtle cassis with gentle aeration. Blanched almonds and a little of their creaminess. In the mouth, there’s some Griotte cherry, a hint of peony and maybe lily of the valley too. Succulent and luxurious in its texture. Suave, quite full and ample in frame, this pushes at the cheeks. I love how the fresh juiciness seems to gather at the top of the palate and, with a sensation of greater viscosity, glide down the cheeks like ‘tears’ descending the sides of a glass. Not, of course the density and concentration of the last couple of vintages, but beautifully managed, very vibrant and fresh and yet with no astringency or dryness. In fact we have a lovely juiciness on the finish and we are left with a very persistent sensation of chewy grape skins.

Smoke and petrol nuances add breadth to the aromas of rosemary oil, pear and soil tones. The rich, concentrated, powerful and sappy larger-bodied flavors coat the palate with dry extract while delivering excellent length on the muscular and mildly rustic finale. Allen Meadows - BurghoundDerived from Les Fairendes, which tends to produce rather elegant wines, the 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot exhibits aromas of minty pear, green apple, nutmeg and toasted bread, followed by a medium to full-bodied, bright and pure palate that's chalky and suave.
91-93 points
William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeots 1er Cru is composed, almost understated on the nose, with oyster shells and crustacea infusing the yellow fruit. Excellent delineation. The fresh, vibrant palate is more lime-infused than Moreau’s other cuvées and, as such, may not have quite the same level of complexity or terroir expression. Thoroughly enjoyable - perhaps the punters' choice from the Domaine. Drink 2025-2038.

A.D. Rattray Cask Orkney 15 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Orkney Islands, SCOTLAND$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 46%A mystery Orkney. Could it be Scapa? The notes from the bottlers describe a peppery-smokey character, so it's the other. Not a mainstream Highland Park that most will be accustomed to, which is what you want from an independent. At first, mezcal-like, and subtle smoke indeed, instead, a rather fresh, grassy, crisp expression with trace peat. Fascinating and strangely compelling compared to the official bottlings, once attuned to the right amount of water it makes for a good aperitif. Otherwise, add an ice cube or two, release the oils and richen up the experience. Mimimal water is required. One reviewer sums it up as "...a great summer whisky. Lovely honied malty waxy notes; a good ex-bourbon maturation". It's out of the ordinary for the age statement, but at this price and ABV, grabbing a bottle is't much of a gamble. 46% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.
Other reviews... Nose: A freshness opens the dram, before vanilla, coconut, lemon peel, and some red berries — think raspberries. Palate: That freshness continues alongside cream soda, orange and lemon peel, some apple skin, blossom honey, brioche, and just a hint of sweet spice like ginger powder. Finish: Decent length on the finish here without too much tannin. Comment: Sweet and mellow with lots of sweet bourbon-cask character. - whiskymag.com
Notes from the bottlers... Colour: Butterscotch gold. Nose: Clover honey, Parma violet, ripe peach and wild heather embers. Palate: Grilled plum, old-fashioned barley sugar, noble hop and caraway. Finish: A prolonged peppery smoke lifted by tart citrus and foraged pine.

2011 House of MacDuff The Golden Cask Tamnavulin 12 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$179. 99Bottle$2159.88 DozenABV: 61.5%Barely a brand until the last few years, Tamnavulin has suddenly catapulted to become the fastest growing Single Malt Scotch in the world - partly due to maturing stocks being re-racked into high-quality wood and partly due to the stills being replaced in 2010 to produce a more complex and full-bodied distillate. This bottling represents one of the early runs from the 'new period'. Cough lozenges and Ovaltine, also vaguely cut grass-like on the nose, sweetening after air contact; the first taste feels tense and needing water. Given time we have a well-endowed, medium-bodied malt of some presence: tea biscuits, dark chocolate and warming spice, circling back to the faint citrusy, grassy edge found on the nose. Chewy uncut; broad, soft and feminine with water, the spices moderated. This would make a nice aperitif. 266 bottles from an x-Bourbon barrel. 61.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

2011 House of MacDuff The Golden Cask Strathmill 11 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$159. 99Bottle$1919.88 DozenABV: 58.7%Light in character, Strathmill uses a long fermentation to help create fruitiness. Muted scents of red apple are a keynote here with light vanillas developing definition after air contact. The intensity of orchard fruits is more pronounced in the mouth - poached and sprinkled with sweet spices; acidity and gentle tannins augment the crunchy naturalness of the fruits, transitioning to fine dark chocolate, hints of lemon blossom and pepper warmth. Semi-ripe pear lifts the finish. So well structured for a youngster. With water, simpler, though more of the crisp malt comes through. An immensely appealing bottling from a distillery that's off most people's radar, but worth seeking out. 309 bottles from an x-bourbon cask. 58.7% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

2011 House of MacDuff The Golden Cask Glentauchers 12 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 55.2%Glentauchers is generally considered a middling distillery, but one that's catching more exposure via independents, probably because casks are still reasonably priced and readily available. This beefy, tongue-tingling, drier-styled expression has a rich fruit'n'nut chocolate / digestif biscuit character with a weight and mouthfeel that resembles quality Benrinnes. The Bourbon wood influence is minimal. In fact, if you had to guess, you'd probably say European oak or second-fill sherry. Its simplicity is offset by a booming, warming finish where a meaty-gravox character re-emerges, followed by hints of toasted bread and honey. Broad shouldered. 167 bottles were drawn from a Bourbon cask at 55.2% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

This is one. Uncut, very approachable with broad brush strokes of chimney soot and dry earthy peat reek perfectly matching the low-key sweetness of the malt. Something faintly fruity develops at the finish, like dried pineapple or green apples. Overall pretty standard for Ardmore, though perhaps deeper and more oily than many recent examples. 243 bottles from an x-bourbon barrel. 52% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Nippy and tongue-tingling, you can see why this attracted the attention of the bottlers. Behind all those busy, raucous spices, it is remarkably pure with deliciously defined flavours of vanilla oak and sponge cake, underscored by milk chocolate, light caramels and an oily finish. Precocious, and nothing that a little water won’t temper. 2014 House of MacDuff The Golden Cask Ben Nevis 9 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 58.8%Ben Nevis is a whisky for true malt-hunters: high quality, a distinctive make and not widely distributed, which is probably why most indie bottlers endeavour to have some in their range. This one feels like the distillate is really talking ('distillate-driven' as some would say) but you need to be patient. A closed nose, waxed peels, then vaguely grassy... given time develops enticing suggestions of pineapple chunks and green apples. The balance is fine-tuned. Peppered water crackers, followed by a green apple-pear fruitiness mingling with light vanillas. Ends lipsmacking and refreshing - like young Calvados eaux de vie. Add water and it's a little more grassy but retains enough of that crisp, fruity character that typifies many young Ben Nevis. 303 bottles from an x-Bourbon cask. 58.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

In our limited experience, it seems to require a good 15-20 years to unfold. This young, fairly bold example takes some time in the glass to blow off a sharp citric edge and give way to richer notes of powdered beef stock, Ovaltine and dark chocolate. Chewy and full-bodied, packed with bittersweet dark chocolate and hints of roasted nuts, the finish is brisk, vanilla-laced, faintly fruity, medium dry and slightly nutty. The nose needs coaxing to draw out notes of cocoa and malted milk but remains reserved. Nippy yet approachable, delivering a fairly mainstream Glenrothes profile; digestif biscuits, muesli and chewy, drying oak flavours, water broadening the mouthfeel, softening the prickle and adding an Ovaltine-like edge. Similar to a ramped-up version of the official ten year old; a malty-malt that improves with time in the glass. The yield was 124 bottles at 62.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

2024 Chateau Lafite Rothschild Pre-Arrival OfferPauillac, Bordeaux, FRANCE$950. 00Bottle$11400.00 DozenClosure: CorkOften seen as the most elegant of the First Growth wines, Chateau Lafite Rothschild has long been considered one of the greatest wines from not only Bordeaux, but from anywhere in the world. Prices too reflect its status as the most collectable wine in Bordeaux, spurred on since 2008 when it ruled the Chinese fine wine market. While the vineyards are planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, each year the proportions vary according to the vintage, normally with Cabernet Sauvignon accounting for 80-90% of the blend.
Other Reviews....
A blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2024 Lafite Rothschild offers up aromas of minty blackcurrants, violets, incense, loamy soil and cigar box, followed by a medium-bodied, pillowy and open-knit palate built around tangy acids and powdery tannins, concluding with a discreetly herbal finish. Harvest began on September 24 and concluded on October 4, delivering a Lafite in something of a throwback style, nodding to the wines made here in the 1970s.

William Kelley - Wine AdvocateThe 2024 Lafite-Rothschild is a sensual, elegant wine very much in the style of the year. Plush and enveloping, with lovely forward fruit, the 2024 is very Lafite, perhaps a bit reticent, but super-expressive just the same. Black cherry, pomegranate, blood orange and a kiss of espresso all build in the glass, framed by quintessentially finessed Lafite tannins. The 2024 is sublime. I expect it will be one of the to be one of the top wines in the Médoc when all is said and done. Drink 2034-2064.

Antonio Galloni - VinousRich texture, this stands head and shoulders above many in the vintage, with graphite, crayon and cassis bud rather than exuberant black fruits. This is precise, savoury, delineated, floral, gunsmoke, juicy, captures the effortless elegance that Lafite does so so well, and it totally delivers. Harvest 23 September to 7 October, 32hl/h yield, above the Pauillac average, 16% press wine included in the blend. Director Eric Kohler's 33rd year in Pauillac. I am giving a slightly earlier begin drinking date than usual, but I am certain this will age exceptionally well as Lafite always does. Drink 2032-2050.

Jane Anson - Inside BordeauxPauillac; 96% Cabernet Sauvignon; 3% Merlot; 1% Petit Verdot; a final yield of 32 hl/ha and representing just a third of the total production; 12.9% alcohol; the first vintage certified organic; tasted at Duhart-Milon with Saskia de Rothschild). Quite plump and plush for the vintage. Like its stablemate Duhart this is very spherical in its shape in the mouth, with gloriously refined cashmere tannins encircling the fresh, bright, crisp and crunchy dark berries and the black cherries – just à point – that form the dense and compact core around which the wine is structured vertically. Horizontally, the wine is again highly structured by a very well-defined central spine around which the graphite seems to gather with the tannins in this dimension stretching out the fruit over the palate. Very classical, very pure and precise, very focussed and always tender, soft and gently seductive. Almost opulent, but never quite, the austerity of the vintage reining it back and rendering this a little more ethereal and also a little more intellectual in the process.

Maintaining the company's traditional styling, the 'handwritten' label and wax sealed stopper reflect Delord's artisanal roots. However, while this variant retains a vintage statement, the label has changed from Bas Armagnac to Vieil Armagnac. The convention is similar to a blend of Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne cognacs being designated as "Fine Champagne Cognac". In Gascony, Vieil Armagnac refers to a blend of two terroirs of the same vintage year, or that the fruit is from Haut Armagnac (often simply stated as "Armagnac". Haut Armagnacs are considered of lesser quality, and less suited to long ageing, which is undeserved, since some can be brilliant). Vieil Armagnacs like this one are typically aged for between 5 to 15 years. Savour it neat or with a splash of water, paired with fresh pastries or semi-soft cheeses. 40% Alc./Vol.

This bottling turns Glentauchers on its head. If fat sherry is your thing, it's the 100 proof for you. Admittedly, the distillery character might be a bit lost, but sometimes that's the trade-off when you want a bomb. Expect a mouth full of thick and oily Oloroso, raisins and overripe fruit, balanced with some mild spices. A whisky to remind us what decent quality should sell for. 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... This is a whisky that doesn't convince at first sip. It requires some work, some water and a little time. But that's actually what we as nerds are looking for. Even then, it won't be an outstanding whisky - but it is a delicious whisky that is easy to drink and that you can experiment with a little. And it is a whisky that is absolutely worth its price. - whiskybase.com
...Inviting nose, in part due to the vibrant fruits interplaying with the sherry casks. Those fruits are more subdued on the palate, otherwise I would've liked this even more. But overall this Glentauchers from the Signatory 100 Proof range is a flavourful single malt. It swims well and I wouldn't be surprised if it develops nicely a few months after you've opened the bottle. - wordsofwhisky.com/
Described as “having a disruptive effect” and [probably] “the most talked about series of the last twelve months”, Signatory Vintage’s 100 Proof range is bringing value back to the independent category and in a big way. If other bottlers can afford to follow their strategy, it may also mark a turning point. As of 2025, the whisky industry is facing poor global economic performance, rising energy costs, instability, shifting consumer behaviour and overproduction risks. Whether a comprehensive price correction would be good for the industry as a whole, only time will tell. Right now it’s a godsend for drinkers. These are the whiskies you want to stock up on. Largely sold out in the UK and said to be limited to around 3000 bottles per edition, most are drawn from sherry casks and deliver the kind of value we can only hope to see again. If you were too late on our last few Signatory offers, this is your final chance to take advantage of a bevy of keenly priced, high strength malts, many from acclaimed distilleries sourced by one of Scotland’s most respected independent bottlers.

2023 Wittmann Morstein Riesling Grosses GewachsRheinhessen, GERMANY$230. 00Bottle$2760.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkIt's hard to quantify the impact and value of 350+ vintages the Wittmann family have under their belt in their hometown of Westhofen. As part of the 15th generation of ownership, current steward Philipp Wittmann has embraced the organic viticulture ethos started by his father Günter, even taking it one step further by converting their vineyards to biodynamic in 2004. He lays the foundation for wines of exceptional quality through intensive, year-round maintenance, low yields and the uncompromising selection of bunches by hand. These are superb dry Rieslings from this superstar Rheinhessen winery.
Other Reviews....
Compared to the Brunnenhäuschen, Wittmann's 2023 Morstein Riesling GG is light and clear but also still very reduced in the fresh and mineral, even savory and precise nose, which is still restrained in the fruit. Pure and extremely salty on the palate, with a very firm and grippy structure and an almost dry/drying minerality, this Morstein draws saliva. It seems more austere and sinewy here and now than the Brunnenhäuschen, and it's still extremely influenced by limestone. This is a great and promising wine. Tasted at the Vorpremiere VDP.Grosses Gewächs in Wiesbaden in August 2024.
In another tasting two days earlier at the domaine, the 2023 Morstein showed a wonderfully chalky, elegantly fruity and balanced nose. Pure and with citrusy freshness as well as chalky salinity, this is a ravishingly fine, elegant and clever Morstein that is light-years away from the abundance and power of the 2000s and early 2010s. This is vibrant and stimulating salty and truly reminiscent of Champagnes from the Côte des Blancs. A magnificent Morstein! Drink 2028-2060.

Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Westhofener Morstein Grosses Gewächs still flickers with the slightest flinty reduction on its cool nose, but with air, lemon moves in and stays center stage. The palate is just as lemony and immediately projects cooling, moist, chalky depth. The palate is slender, delving deep into that chalkiness. Scented with lemon and bedded on soothing, citric yeast, the finish is totally zesty, precise, strait-laced, pristine and very long. (Bone-dry). Drink 2028-2060.

Anne Krebiehl - VinousNothing is more fundamental to the world than the interplay of light and darkness, and this wine brings that into your glass in a completely compelling way. There’s an incredible intensity to the minerality of this dry riesling. It’s a giant of orginality, but lies at the upper edge of medium-bodied, resulting in a fantastic sense of lightness. Extraordinary focus and precision in the enchanting and totally fascinating finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink from release.

Clear, bright, elegant and fresh, with spicy citrus fruit and a distinct lime and saline note, Wittmann's Westhofen 2023 Kirchspiel Riesling GG starts strong! Elegant, dense and creamy on the palate, it has a zesty character but is also balanced and noble in texture. Pleasantly round, juicy and intense and always supported by its limestone texture, this is an excellent Riesling from Westhofen! Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Westhofener Kirchspiel Grosses Gewächs comes with notes of lemon balm and chervil, deeply scented and deliciously herbal. The palate gushes with coolness, like a mountain brook over stone, sinking deeper and deeper into the cool limestone with its serene, bright, lemony scent and the merest creamy edge—rather seductive. Pure, ripe lemon zest shines on the finish. (Bone-dry). Drink 2028-2055.

Anne Krebiehl - VinousHow can a mysterious labyrinth be so delightful? Because at every turn there’s a new aspect of the wine’s beauty. The incredible tension between the flinty and floral aspects of this wine makes it remarkably energetic for a dry riesling with this level of concentration. Then comes an astonishing Amalfi lemon freshness in the super-long and precise finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold.

Wittmann's Westhofen 2023 Aulerde Riesling GG continues the top performances of the last five years. It has a deep, concentrated, fresh and citrusy nose with substantial saltiness and still some reduction, reminiscent of clay, lime and lime chutney, and a dense and tightly woven palate. This is a fleshy, juicy and concentrated, very youthful but elegant and balanced Aulerde with great potential and long-lasting minerality and savoriness, but it's also generous and elegant in its fruit expression. Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Westhofener Aulerde Grosses Gewächs is made from vines planted in the rich marls Aulerde in 1949 and 1951, at a then-unusual density of 8,000 vines per hectare. Wittmann says that this is the earliest ripening site, yielding tiny, ripe grapes year after year. A touch of mellow, ripe, yellow apple appears alongside gentle lemon on the nose. The palate also has that beautiful yellow apple spice and lovely juiciness and texture. The serene and smooth yet hearty palate radiates coolness. (Bone-dry). Drink 2028-2050.

Anne Krebiehl - VinousBold, compact and concentrated, this astonishing dry riesling GG makes a very serious statement. It also remains cool and restrained, with a glittering thread of flint winding through the textural complexity on the medium- to full-bodied palate. Try to be patience, because this is delicious now, but the tension in the extremely long finish and the youthfulness of the aromas speak of wine with decades of life ahead of it. 2012 Signatory Vintage Glendullan 11 Year Old 100 Proof Edition #32 Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 57.1%"...this is very good." - whiskyfun.com
That Glendullan is such an under-the-radar distillery is one of those curious anomalies in the Scotch whisky industry, as it produces over 5 million litres of alcohol a year. That makes it Diageo’s second largest distillery and one of the top 25 producers in the country. Of course, most of it goes into blends, but we love to import whiskies that everyone else seems to ignore whenever the opportunity arises (and the price is right). Matured in first-fill Oloroso Sherry Butts, this expression is said to have tons of fruit. 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... Warning! If you don't like a crazy fruit bomb, don't buy this. This is really a completely different profile than most dark sherry bombs from the 100 proof series. Incredibly many light and fresh sweet fruits. - whiskybase.com
...One gets the sense that Signatory has turned this successful series into something of their own A'bunadh, in a way. Imagine—batch #32! We had rather enjoyed some Glendullans from the Signatory UCF series. Colour: amber. Nose: well then, metal polish, dark chocolate, roasted hazelnuts, tar, toffee, instant coffee, burnt raisins... In short, textbook sherry. With water: the arrival of unsurprising old walnuts. Mouth (neat): remarkable how much this brings to mind that other series we mentioned a few lines above. Bitter marmalade, chocolate, tobacco, leather and a pepper note that grows increasingly assertive. With water: there we go, it loosens up, though there’s even more spice—juniper, cloves, burnt sugar, pipe tobacco... Finish: very long, still on similar notes, with added pumpernickel. Comments: bone-dry oloroso, marching in step, just a little on the forceful side. No, this is very good... 86 points - whiskyfun.com

Dark red core with black toned edges and a light red to red hue. Delighting the olfactory senses are aromas of red cherries, rose petals, red raspberries and red liquorice which are followed by whiffs of earth, dried herbs and spice. Supple on entry yet restrained in it’s feel, dried and morello cherry flavours are featured over Mediterranean herb, earthy leather and brambly spice characters. Vibrant acidity and slightly muscular tannins lend some firmness to the mid length finish.

This wine pours with an appropriate vibrant-garnet colour. So tense and fine; a medium-weight red of cranberry, rosehip tea and woody spices, with cola, just-ripe raspberry and fennel in tow. So very succulent, great length, amazing fine-grained tannin profile and a general sense of freshness. It feels so legit, so good to drink, serious but with such high drinkability. Awesome. Drink by 2043.

Sierra Reed’s winemaking journey began in New Zealand whilst filming and interviewing the Family of Twelve (a fraternity of New Zealand’s most prestigious and elite wineries). This inspired her to become completely immersed in winemaking taking on vintages around the world from Napa Valley to Barolo, Germany, Barossa and beyond, eventually making her own wines in 2015.
Aged predominantly in stainless steel on lees for 6 months. Brilliant pale straw colour with a faint greenish tinge to the edges and a watery hue. Lemon and lime scents burst out of the glass trailed by some Granny Smith apple skin, wet steel and flinty mineral notes. Taut and tight yet concentrated and expressive, the palate features mouth filling lime, lemon and green to red apple fruit over traces of honeysuckle, wet steel and flinty mineral elements. Crisp acidity lends an edgy feel to the long zippy finish.
