Domaine Pichot is a 24Ha family estate in Vouvray on the right bank of the Loire, where vignerons dedicate their time to the cultivation of Chenin Blanc, locally coined ‘Pineau de la Loire’, to produce dry, sweet and sparkling whites.
Demi-sec Vouvray is, after sparkling Vouvray, the most popular wine of the appellation and perhaps the most typical, showing Chenin Blanc at it most perfumed and expressive with just a delicate sweetness balancing the lively acidity.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a subtle tinge of green around the edges and a watery hue. Elevated baked pear, Jonathan apple and honeysuckle aromas mix with hints of quince and cinnamon spice. Luscious pear, baked apple and musk flavours are texturally full and round with some honeysuckle and quince elements lurking in the background. Excellent concentration finishing off dry with fresh acidity. A dash of spice emerging on the long enveloping conclusion.

An estate blend of cabernet and shiraz. There's nothing that the human combination of Duke Ranson in and around the vineyard and the skills of winemaker Robert Diletti can't achieve. The breathless flavours, structure and texture of this striking blend are, quite simply, superb. Glistening black cherries, satsuma plum and finely wrought tannins are all on parade. Drink by 2043.

Eden Hall was established by David Hall, a well-respected spinal surgeon, and his wife Mardi when they purchased the Avon Brae property in 1996. They quickly set about re-establishing the vineyard and the first commercial release was in 2004. Today the property has over 80 acres under vine. Sourced from selected rows in Eden Hall’s Block 4 vineyard, the wine was matured for 22 months in French oak and spent more than a year in bottle prior to release. The talented Phil Lehmann was the winemaker of this large scaled 2021 Shiraz.

A powerhouse of dense, rich, voluptuous fruit.

Impenetrable inky black in colour with a very deep dark red black tinged hue. Wafting out of the glass are heady aromas of ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark plum which are married to toasty vanillin oak, dark chocolate, fennel and peppered earth notes. Rich, voluptuous and dense, the palate is a super concentrate of ripe blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and black cherry fruits. Smoky vanillin oak, fennel and peppered earth elements also chime in to add further interest across the back half. Velvet smooth yet solidly structured tannins. Boasting magnificent power and depth it has an ultra-long finish that’s decadently rich and plush.

Highland glory in a bottle! Distilled one year after Edradour was bought out by Andrew Symington, this version, which has reached maturity, should be magnificent in both concentration and mouthfeel. Rested in first-fill sherry cask #926 for seventeen years before decanting on the 25th of August 2021, 674 bottles are on offer globally. We have secured a small allocation. Overseas demand for gems like this suggests they are heading into collector territory. 56.6% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Once more The Edradour proves that it can provide beautifully composed, well-aged, sherry-driven but not overly-sherry profile whisky. This release is mature, round, mellow, interesting, well-balanced, and multi-layered, and the only thing it lacks is more nuances/depths. It remains as such as an example of a classic, sherry-matured highland whisky with no flaws. - whiskybase.com

Epsilon is the project of Aaron and Julie Southern (Julie is a member of the Kalleske clan) who own vineyards in the Northern part of Barossa. As the familiar story goes with so many growers they sold off their fruit to larger wineries until a chance meeting with the Massena boys Dan Standish and Jaysen Collins. Under their guidance they convinced them to start up their own brand in 2004 and build a winery on the property. Maturation takes place for approximately 12 months in new and seasoned French and American oak with only the best batches making the final blend.

Draped in rich, succulent, velvety fruit yet refined in it’s feel, this is one irresistible Barossa Shiraz.

Dense inky black heart with a deep bright dark red black hue. Heady dark plum, blackberry, liquorice and black cherry aromas waft out of the glass with some ensuing gently smoked vanillin cedar, fennel, hints of dark chocolate and spice lending further interest. Rich, plush and sumptuous the palate is drenched with succulent waves of dark plum, liquorice and black cherry fruits which are flanked by flashes of smoky vanillin cedar, earthy fennel characters and blackpepper. Fantastically concentrated and opulent it shows great underlying freshness and possesses velvet like tannins. Flooded with juicy dark to black fruit the long finish nonetheless maintains a refined feel.

In Alto Adige Pinot Grigio ranks as one of the most important varieties and altitude is king. Erste + Neue’s Pinot Grigio comes from some of their highest sites ranging in altitudes up to 800 metres that have an array of different soil types. Picked in late September to retain acidity and freshness, post fermentation the pressed juice spends about 6 months in 110-hectolitre neutral oak and is left on gross less to provide additional texture and palate weight.
Bright pale straw to straw colour with a watery hue. Delightful pear and red apple scents fill the nostrils with hints of dried honey, faint musk and wet stone also evident. Magnificent colour displaying an impenetrable inky black core with an equally dense hue. Still a touch reticent the nose slowly opens to reveal alluring liquorice and confectionary scents which meld into a mix of morello cherry, well integrated spirit and spice notes. Rich, luscious morello cherry and liquorice flavours are backed by rugged, muscly tannins which lend firmness and structure for the long haul. Marzipan, infusions of vanilla and spice ensue. Exceptionally intense and powerful it finishes long, dense and robust.

The 2017 Vintage Port, not quite bottled when seen but the final blend, is a field blend (with typical grapes like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca) aged for approximately 20 months in used French oak. It comes in with 98 grams of residual sugar, a little drier on paper than its Taylor sibling this year. Sappy and sensational in flavor and fruit, this seemingly has moderate tannins around the edges on first taste, velvety texture and a long finish. Despite the first impression of moderation, there is plenty of power here. As it got some aeration, it showed nothing but power and closed down fairly hard. The combination of great fruit and fine structure makes this a potentially great Fonseca, but right now it is obviously immature and not showing everything it has. I'd recommend some patience here.

Mark Squires - Wine Advocate (July 2019)

Picking began at Quinta do Panascal on September 6, the two other quintas in Pinhão that form the 2017 Fonseca Vintage Port, Cruzeiro and Santo António picked on 10 and 17 September respectively. One of the deepest, most opaque color amongst the new Port alumni, it has one of the most backward, almost recalcitrant noses that demands a lot of aeration. It gradually opens to reveal blackberry, melted tar, thyme, clove and violet aromas that are well defined, if maybe just missing the same breeding as Taylor’s. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. This is fresh and detailed, a slightly more structured Fonseca than expected, quite strict at first with good grip and a lightly spiced, precise finish. Powerful and long on the aftertaste, you can feel this Fonseca 60 seconds after the wine has exited. It deserves 10-15 years in bottle. Excellent, but patience required. The most enigmatic of the 2017 Vintage Ports. Total production is 8,100 cases.

Dark and dense, with fig bread, baker's chocolate and tar notes leading off before the core flavors of plum, black currant and blackberry paste finally start to emerge. The wild, spirited finish shows cast iron, licorice snap and roasted alder elements, delivering a decidedly chewy feel. A big, old-school, throwback Port that will age at a glacial pace. Best from 2035 through 2060.

The wine's fine perfumed black plum fruits give a wonderful jammy character while bringing out a fresh edge. These are balanced by the dry core of this beautiful wine with its rich, generous tannins. It will all come together from 2030 in a very fine, integrated wine.

    Roger Voss - Wine Enthusiast

Already beautifully integrated, this is showing great purity and poise. It's open and in its first bloom of youth, with lovely aromatic red berry fruit and floral aromas, plus a touch of leafiness. It's soft and fleshy initially, seemingly not as big as its stablemate Taylor's - and not quite so deep in colour - though with dark chocolate concentration and mid-palate firmness. Lovely full, ripe tannins mass in the mouth, well defined, with fresh berry fruit remerging on the broad, expansive finish.

    Richard Mayson - Decanter

Deepest purple. Wild, perfectly ripe small black berries like elderberry but also the lush sweetness of ripe blackberries plus a stony, rocky edge and just a touch charry. Lush, plush and exotic on the palate, deep-pile, compact, smooth tannins, just enough freshness to balance the rich generosity. The finish is beautifully dry-tasting, the tannins melting on the long finish.

Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey (700ml)
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $109. 99
    Bottle
    $1319.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

"...you can buy me a dozen of these roses any day of the week." - breakingbourbon.com

If you're a Bourbon drinker whose still not familiar with Four Roses, then your time has come. The brand dates back to the 1860s and was one of the few to survive Prohibition, becoming the best-selling bourbon in the U.S. through the 1930s and '50s. Decades later it was an export-only product and became difficult to procure until 2002, when Japanese brewing giant, Kirin purchased the Four Roses brand and re-introduced it to the United States.

The distillery is unique in that it uses five different yeast strains and two mash bills to create ten distinct whiskies based on ten different 'recipes'. The strain used for the Single Barrel bottlings is Four Roses' version “V” which is described as "delicately fruity, spicy, and creamy." The recipe here is referred to as 'OBSV' (60% corn, 35% rye and 5% malted barley) which emphasises delicate fruit and rye flavours. Ages vary, but will always fall somewhere between 7-9 years. Regardless, the aim is to bottle when the whiskeys are deemed to have reached their peak. Each release is individually marked with a warehouse and barrel number which is not predictable and subject to change. It's also part of the fun: No two barrels create identical bourbons, thus the single barrel concept provides the opportunity to appreciate and compare whiskies from different barrels and warehouse locations.

Our tasting of barrel RN 8-4R (and several subsequent bottlings) has found the quality to be consistently high and true to style. Four Roses Single Barrel kicks off with a robust Bourbon sniff; a dense core of vanilla custard and caramel fudge overlaid with peppermint, balsa wood, cocoa and hints of cherry. At 50% ABV, the whiskey is concentrated yet controlled with razor sharp sweet/dry balance; a burst of vanillan oak, honey and spiced peach are offset by a tangy, vibrant finish. Glace cherry is followed by late mint freshness. The poise and length are close enough to perfect, delivering as complete a Bourbon as you could expect to find in its category. That high standard was recently confirmed at the 2024 World Whisky Awards where it was judged World's Best Single Barrel Bourbon, Best Kentucky Single Barrel Bourbon and Best Kentucky Small Batch Bourbon. Brent Elliott, Master Distiller commented "Hand-selecting each barrel is a meticulous process, so to be highly awarded in both the Single Barrel and Small Batch Bourbon categories is an extraordinary honor." More reviews below.

Other reviews... brilliantly flinty nose with the Demerara sugars positively crunching under the sniff. Light golden syrup fits the bill perfectly. An immediate small grain explosion of the very highest calibre. Adorable spices wade into the sugary mix. Though there, the liquorice-hickory combination is happy to take a back seat to the heather honey; Can't get enough of that developing chocolate. The best Four Roses I have tasted in a very long time. Complexity levels are off the charts and the sugar-spice balance just can't be bettered. As breath taking as it is majestic. 95.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024

This gently honeyed bottling is a very good example of the distillery looking tough...but being a real sweetie. 92 points - Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2023

...Full of flavor, regularly available on shelves, and a reasonable price… you can buy me a dozen of these roses any day of the week. I found this bottle of Four Roses Single Barrel OBSV to be spicier than the Four Roses Small Batch, which I normally find to be a subtle balance of sweet and I often describe as a good beginner bourbon. I’d say a good description for the standard Single Barrel offering, is that it’s the grown-up version of their small batch product. The flavor is fuller, the finish is longer... - breakingbourbon.com

...'This big, sweet, warming bourbon strikes all the right chords. Sizzling sweet corn meets generous oak, like dusty old books, but the bright peach nectar, wet walnuts, and vibrant spice beam through in abundance. Unctuous and concentrated on the palate, it evokes cinnamon-dusted peach pie, with hints of clove and pepper on the finish. A solid and seamless whiskey, with fruit, floral, oak, and spice in perfect harmony. 93 points - whiskyadvocate.com

"Richard Seale has done it again. Magisterium is such a fun rum that carves its own path, even after 26 specialized releases in the ECS series."

Marque number XXVI (26) in the Exceptional Cask Series is the curiously named 'Magisterium', a blend of three 16-year-old single blended rums distilled in two stills: a Double-Retort Pot Still and a Continuous Twin Column Coffey Still. Out of the three rums, two were double-matured. One spent three years aging in ex-bourbon casks and 13 years in ex-oloroso sherry barrels; another spent nine years in ex-bourbon casks and seven years in ex-oloroso sherry. The third component was matured exclusively in ex-bourbon barrels for 16 years. That makes it the first heavily sherried expression since the ECS Sovereignty, widely regarded as a series favourite. The make up should appeal equally to lovers of dark, brooding cask strength single malts, as much as Foursquare fans. The final rum is bottled at 58% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The rum is 16 years old and it does have a very pronounced oak notes initially. There is a sweetness that mingles nicely alongside the bitter oak char. Which prevents either element from unbalancing the mix. Beneath this we have an array of rich dark fruits – almost like a Black Forest Gateaux filling. The rum is more intense and less sweet than the nose suggested. The mid palate takes on an intense oak and dry astringency. Lifted by notes of dark chocolate and those dark fruits. There are hints of leather and a little shoe polish from time to time. The finish on Foursquare Magisterium is quite dry and again exhibits a fair amount of oak. It is long and very satisfying with a very lip smacking flavour! This is a another great entry into the Exceptional Cask Series. I have really enjoyed re-acquainting myself with a Foursquare rum as I haven’t had one for a while. Still producing really good stuff and still upping the ante in terms of tropical ageing. - thefatrumpirate.com

...Richard Seale has done it again. Magisterium is such a fun rum that carves its own path, even after 26 specialized releases in the ECS series. If you liked Sovereignty, this release is certainly worth a look. - memphisrum.club/

A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec matured for 18 months in a mix one third new French oak and seasoned French barrels. Totally opaque midnight black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Red to black currant aromas infused with a combination of cigar box, black olive, earth, bay leaf and spice notes sail through the nostrils. Flowing across the mid weighted palate with plenty of flesh and drive are rich blackcurrant and ripe mulberry fruits. Spicy vanillin cedar, subtle earthy tobacco, delicate black olive and infusions of bay leaf echo through the back half. Seamlessly integrated, finely grained tannins provide the underlying structure. The long, refined conclusion gorgeously layered with fruit.
Drink over the next 8-10 years.

This is predominantly cabernet but smaller percentages of petit verdot, cabernet franc and malbec contribute. Powerful and controlled cabernet displaying a lot of the black fruit character of this part of Margaret River. On the nose you get a terrific mix of bay leaf, black olive and varietal blackcurrant. There's a pronounced oyster shell minerality bursting through supported by a chalky tannin feel. Integrated and vibrant, it's a wine of energy and drive.

As usual, a tiptop Parterre with enticing florals giving way to mulberries and boysenberries, dried herbs, choc-mint and more besides. It’s medium bodied and wonderfully savoury with powdery tannins and great length. And it will age gracefully. Drink by 2040.

Established in 1979 by Geoff and Susan Bull, Freycinet was the first commercial winery on the East Coast of Tasmania. Today daughter Lindy and partner Claudio Radenti who both have extensive winemaking experience from their travels around the world carry on the tradition. 2024 was a standout vintage delivering fruit of exceptional quality with concentrated flavours and ripe, juicy acidity.

A magnificently sculptured and pure Tassie Riesling that boasts explosive power and intensity

Brilliant water like colour with a distinctive glimmer of green around the outskirts. Leaping out of the glass are powerful aromatics of lime, lemon and Granny Smith apple followed by some hints of orange rind, talc and chalky mineral notes. The palate is a combination of terrific intensity, drive and tension delivering sculptured, yet texturally engulfing flavours of lime, lemon and orange rind underpinned by mouth watering acidity. Lining the back half are green apple, chalky talc, wet steel and flinty mineral characters. Zingy in its feel it finishes exceptionally long, concentrated and super scrumptious.
Hard to resist now but will also cellar up to 6-8 years.

A taut, high-tensile East Coast riesling that's all velocity and lip-smackingly pure lime and lemon fruits with hints of sea spray, crushed stone, lemongrass, grapefruit pith, citrus blossom and thirst-slaking good times. It's got a wicked minerally cadence as it cuts across the palate; a touch of clover blossom in there, too, if we're getting picky. But we're not getting picky and this is just a delicious, focused Tassie riesling. Drink by 2034.

Planted on a cool, south-facing slope in Tarrawarra. Whole-bunch pressed and barrel fermented in seasoned French puncheons and one ceramic egg. A vibrant green gold. Immediately appealing with its aromas of stone fruits, yellow apple, some lemon confiture and a touch of brine. Chalky textured, slippery and with a certain openness but finely detailed and structured too. Grapefruit pithy on the long, beautifully balanced finish. Drink 2024-2030.

A bright, sunny personality is underlined by bright golden colour and lively tropical notes atop a pithy citrus body. It’s an honest reflection of site – mostly clone P58 Chardonnay planted at 100m elevation along south- and east-facing slopes on grey clay loam – with the cool location providing lively acidity that ensures good intensity and drive. Drink 2024 - 2032.

Tarraford is the lowest and theoretically the warmest of Giant Steps single vineyard sites, though altitude isn’t everything when it comes to temperature. I used to live across the road from a steep, hillside vineyard where it was noticeably warmer at the top than it was at the bottom, a phenomenon known as temperature inversion, I believe. I digress.
I looked at this over the course of 24 hours and over that time the wine’s grapefruit characters became more and more dominant. That’s a very good thing. It also tastes of custard apples, cedar-spice, pear and white peach, a pistachio ice-cream character in there too, but the drive of grapefruit here is the wave on which everything else surfs. Tip top release. Well fruited but then dry and pebbly to close. Drink 2024 - 2032+

Majority P58 clone. White grapefruit, winter melon and lemongrass. Blue stone, chalk and raw pancake batter. Lemon aspen and lilly pilly fruit. The wine has a coolness, not just in its refreshing quality but in its textural feel. Like a coconut milk based iced tea. Long lines of natural and unforced acidity, with power but no trace of heft. Raw cashew on the finish. The wine is shaped like an acute triangle with its tapering acidity funnelled down the palate. In the glass on the day, this is the wine that was drinking at its best now with plenty of precision and detail. Tarraford has its dedicated fans and this is one of the best yet. Drink now or cellar for 5 years or so and serve with pan seaweed King George whiting fillets.

From the Sexton vineyard in Gruyere; 10% whole bunches and matured nine months in French barriques (25% new). A deep ruby. Aromas of kirsch, damson plums, licorice root and spices; this heady, concentrated wine has a lot of meat on the bones, with ripe, persistent tannins boding well for the future. A great contrast to the more delicate Giant Steps wines such as Bastard Hill and Primavera. Drink 2024-2030.

A longer ripening period during the 2023 vintage has amplified aromas, with shades of violet at the edge of ripe blood plum and dark cherry. The ripeness is also reflected in bright, luscious blood plum and dark cherry flavours in the front palate; while the combination of MV6, G5V15 and Abel clones provides a keen savoury note, with earthy bite and graphite notes. Chewy tannins give a moreish finish to a wine that already appears resolved and complete. Drink 2024 - 2032.

The Sexton vineyard was planted in 1997. It’s a north-facing, exposed site.
It might be north-facing and exposed but there’s a coolness to this release. It tastes of forest berries and boysenberries with toast and sprays of alpine herbs. It’s not overtly minty but it has that cooling feel. There’s a sweetness to the spice and a general impression of completeness, the latter aided by a full suite of ripe, grainy, meaty tannin. The finish of this wine has a fan to it; forever quality’s best marker. Drink 2027 - 2033+

The final blend of this wine is around 21% whole bunch fermented. A quiet wine in the glass that needs a bit of time before it reveals itself, be patient as this wine unfurls and gains momentum. It is deeply pigmented in garnet hues and shows black raspberries, cherries and rose petals. Woodsy herbs like rosemary stem, thyme, clove and sesame. Front to middle palate tannins are grainy and astute. There are granite-like immoveable foundations to this wine that will allow it to live a long time. So too is there significant turbidity and viscosity to this wine. Drink now or cellar for 8 years. A perfect wine for blackened skinned cod.

Made from a 50/50% blend of Gingin and Bernard clones planted between 100 and 200m in Gruyere. Whole-bunch pressed to French puncheons (25% new oak) with 15% mlf. Right now, this is the most salivating and seductive of Giant Step's superb array of single-vineyard chardonnays from '23. Perfectly ripened white peach, pear and some marine scents lead onto the palate, which is gently textured, saline and structured. The finish is energetic, nutty and long. Drink 2024-2030.

A cold, wet spring and cooler summer has given power and drive to bright, lively flavours from the high-elevation (200m) Sexton Vineyard. Lifted aromas show dark tones of exotic tropical fruits – grilled pineapple, yuzu and guava – with some fresh grated ginger. The palate entry is focused and tightly bound, although this taut and proud wine benefits from 20% malolactic fermentation and some battonage post-fermentation to add roundness to the mouthfeel. It has exuberance to match its serious power and drive. Drink 2024 - 2032.

There’s genuine intensity of chardonnay fruit flavour here and a keen bite that goes with it. Sweet pear, white peach and citrus characters lead to a finish of green pineapple, grapefruit and brine, every step along the way both deliberate and powerful. No meanderings allowed here. Nougat oak teams it all seamlessly together, the finish long and resounding. General view would be that this is good to drink now but for me it needs at least another year in bottle. The north facing Sexton vineyard planted in late 90’s is Giant Steps home base. In the planted 30Ha of chardonnay, Mel Chester has her pick of the patchwork vineyard pulling from Gingin, Mendoza and Bernard clones. Here we see about 50% Gingin. This wine has character. You cannot or will ever say it’s a wallflower. Driven by its intensity of orchard fruit, nectarine and white peach, backed by some of the spiciest back up singers. Turmeric, curry leaf, dandelion and cumin. It’s muscular, powerful and yet graceful, like the stride of an outside centre in rugby, Mark Ella, perhaps. A hint of churned butter and glace pineapple on the finish. Acidity hums along nicely. There is something for everyone’s palate here and this vintage is singing in perfect harmony. Drink now and will cellar well upwards of 8 years. This would be a belter served with homemade cornbread and fried chicken.

Planted in the upper Yarra Valley on a dramatic slope which allows for a cooler and extended growing season, the Applejack Vineyard Pinot Noir is regularly one of the highlights of Giant Steps single vineyard releases. Applejack Pinot Noir has a very strong track record of accolades, including last year being awarded 2024 Halliday Wine Companion Pinot Noir of the Year.

    Other Reviews....
Pinot Noir of the Year. Named after the Applejack eucalypts that surround the vineyard, which was planted at Gladysdale in 1997 by Ray Guerin. Seven clones comprising 114, 115, MV6, D2V5, D5V15, Pommard and Abel. Whole bunches (40%) and 20–25% new French barriques. 2022 was a hard act to follow, but this superb wine gives it a shake. Exotic, aromatic and pure with its bouquet of wild strawberries, dark cherries, quince, spices and flowers. Densley packed, this saturates the palate, but, as always, it's light on its feet at the same time. Seamless tannins round out another benchmark for what's already a benchmark wine. Drink 2024-2030.

A complex story unfolds along the palate – reflective of the complex plantings of MV6, G5V15, 114 and Pommard clones across the steep Applejack Vineyard, that rises sharply from 180m to almost 300m in the upper Yarra Valley. A moreish juiciness is celebrated thanks to 40% whole-bunch fruit in the fermentation, but the sophisticated flavour profile in this restrained, almost coy expression turns very serious in the back-palate, when a surge of black cherry grunt enters the conversation and leaves you with plenty to contemplate by its powerful closing note. The Applejack Vineyard at Gladysdale in the Yarra Valley is on an east facing slope on grey soils. There’s a 100 metre drop from the top of the vineyard to the bottom. There’s also significant clonal diversity in this vineyard. It was planted in 1997.
I tasted this wine a few months ago and loved it from the first sip. I have it on the desk now and there it is again, aglimmer in the glass. This wine is no one’s fool. It’s a pure expression of its place in the world and that place happens to be complex. It’s a cool wine with straight trees of tannin, perfumed red and black berries, lines of spice and echoes of woodsmoke. It’s a forest of a wine, a bit lush, a bit wet, a bit woody; verdant. At all times, as you drink it, the fruit comes at you like a swell. When you swallow this wine it flares out like you’ve reached the lookout at the end of a long walk. It’s a good wine. And it’s more than that. Drink 2025 - 2036+

The final blend of this wine is around 40% whole bunch fermented from the grey clay soils containing Able, MV6, Pommard, 114 and 115 clones. Red toffee apple, hibiscus, and freshly smeared lipstick. Rosella, beetroot and cassis. Exotically spiced, savoury and earthy. The mid palate has a clarity of Bing cherry that’s astonishing. Followed by prune plums, Quong dong and finishing with amplified acidity. There is an umami note, almost like a delicious msg sprinkle. Some decently weighted tannins keep the palate flavours echoing long into the next sip, its sturdy in its structure ensuring this wine will outlive almost any Aussie pinot noir. It’s bullet proof and worth every cent and more. Drink now or will cellar for 10 years. A wonderful wine to have with sirloin, truffle crisps or drinking alone.

The distinctive labels of the Glaetzer portfolio hold special significance when you view this stunning collection of wines as a family affair. The entry level Bishop Shiraz is named in honour of Ben's mother, Judith (Bishop being her maiden name). The label bears the sign of Venus, which has come to represent women and feminine energy. Glaetzer sources fruit for the Bishop from the Ebenezer district of the Barossa valley from low yielding 35 year old to 120 year-old vines. He finds the fruit from younger vines contributes freshness & vibrancy, while Shiraz from the older blocks provides structure and depth. Maturation took place in 100% French oak for a period of 16 months of which 40% was new oak.

A superb union of richness, power, structure and energy.

Dense inky black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Wafting through the nostrils are blackberry, liquorice and dark plum aromatics followed by some crushed blackpepper, subtle fennel, vanillin cedar and faint graphite like notes. Rich and opulent yet possessing great definition, the full bodied palate is awash with concentrated blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits which are framed by fine grained tannins that have a muscular edge. Superb depth & length with spicy vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered earth elements also chiming in. Showing an abundance of power and an energetic vibrancy, it has a long, structured yet slightly tense finish. Give this a few more years to settle in and it should turn into something special.

A towering Shiraz that offers a remarkable combination of freshness, power and rich plush fruit.

Amon Ra is Ben Glaetzer’s flagship Shiraz named after an Egyptian God who was considered to be the King of all Gods. According to Ben Glaetzer the key to Amon Ra Shiraz is balancing the fruit and tannin extraction rather the maximising it – “the fruit has such expression that we aim to preserve the characteristics of the vineyard rather than dominate them.” Fruit was sourced from a range of vineyards, aged between 50-130 years old, with a strong emphasis on fruit quality, rather than simply selecting parcels of fruit because they were from old vines. The wine was matured for 16 months in 100% new oak of which 5% was American and 95% French. It was bottled unfiltered.
Impenetrable inky black heart with an equally deep dark red black hue. Freshly crushed ripe blackberry, dark plum and liquorice aromas soar out of the glass trailed by spicy vanillin oak, hints of ripe blueberry, subtle earthy mocha and faint peppered fennel notes. Rich, powerful and incredibly intense, the full bodied palate is tightly packed with opulent blackberry, dark plum, liquorice and ripe blueberry fruits. Monumental in its stature it has a firm yet beautifully integrated tannin framework. Spicy vanillin oak, traces of mocha, earth and peppered fennel elements lurk beneath. Plush yet remarkably fresh it has an explosive finish that seemingly never ends.
Drink over the next 10-15 years.

This seriously classy 2022 Amon-Ra is seamless and beautifully pitched with focus and refinement. Yet, it delivers powerful aromas of black licorice, fennel seed, and a core of blackberries dusted with star anise enriched by sweet, balanced oak. Impressive energy with a streamlined shape comes forward before building layers of sweet and savory tones. Chewy, fine tannins punctuate a finish of exceptional length. A stunning young wine that will build in bottle. Drink 2028 - 2045.

I feel that Ben Glaetzer's Amon-Ra is one of the flag bearers for contemporary Barossan shiraz, certainly when it comes to the more powerful, weighty styles. It has a sense of compression. Wildly concentrated black fruits and palate heft, yet it displays freshness and form; supple, lithe and possessed of northern subregional power writ large. There's an imperious tannin structure but the fruit just sucks it all up and charges on. One for the sybaritic indulger of Barossan wine. It's a ripper. Drink by 2043.

Dave Brookes - James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion

The 2022 Amon-Ra Shiraz speaks so clearly of the Glaetzer house style: that is to say, sleek, polished, powerful, seamless and fruit-driven. These are wines that speak of the Barossa in their earthy splay of pliable tannin, but they have a vibrance to the fruit that is most attractive. So, while these wines harness the place—this wine could hardly be from anywhere else—they do it in a restrained kind of way. Not that you could call this 2022 Amon-Ra Shiraz "restrained" and get away with it. More to comment on the fact that Barossa is yoked and controlled in this wine. I like it a lot. There are notes of dark chocolate, black cherries, raspberry pastille and even pomegranate molasses, alongside sweet paprika, ironstone and red earth, roasted meat and a throw of tapenade. This is really good. 15% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2024-2037.

A cask strength oloroso gem. Highest recommendation. Grab some, you won't regret it!

If you're looking for cask strength Oloroso sherry matured malt that's also affordable, and with a decent age statement, this ticks all the boxes. There are lots of very enthusiastic reviews from bloggers and whisky lovers online for this release, with the consensus being it's "A true old-school sherry whisky." So when we were (again) offered a parcel at a price that was impossible to resist, we took everything we could get. Sourced from one of the oldest operating distilleries in Scotland and now discontinued..

From a fresh bottle a touch of sulphur blows off developing beautiful sherry pick up on the nose: Dense and almost nutty, with fruit cake, cinnamon toast, liquorice root and zesty peel freshness. Air contact draws out raisin slice, pepper, dark chocolate and hints of vanilla. Juicy and waxy on entry with impressive sherry definition: Raisin cake, orange zest and baking spices build with the brittle malt in a full bodied attack. The high ABV barely rears its head. Gently bittersweet, the finish turns pleasingly astringent and nutty with lingering cigar box and spice. A big bang-for-your-buck malt from an ever dwindling category. Rewards extended breathing. 53.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Initially, whisky produced at the distillery was transported to nearby Aberdeen by horse and cart, to be sold to blenders and wholesalers. The late 1800s saw a large parcel of the company purchased by William Sanderson founder of William Sanderson & Sons, which saw the malt coupled with grain whisky from the North British Distillery and used in the hugely successful Vat 69 blend until the First World War. When the younger staff went to serve in the military, low volume production was maintained throughout the period.

Prior to prohibition in the United States, which saw demand plummet, Sanderson & Sons purchased the remainder of the company. This would later prove to be a fatal mistake. Sanderson & Sons were forced to put the distillery up for sale in 1933 - the same year prohibition ended. Scottish Malt Distillers purchased Glen Garioch in the late '30s, but by the late '60s the distillery was again up for sale, due to frustration with Glen Garioch's limited capacity. In particular, the water source wasn't able to keep up with demand. 1970 saw the purchase of the distillery by Stanley P Morrison Ltd, who immediately started looking for an additional water source in order to expand production.

Glen Garioch's first Single Malt bottling was released in 1972, presumably from material distilled prior to Morrison's acquisition. Readers might recall a recent mention of the Scots being eager to save a dollar, which resulted in the widespread use of American ex-Bourbon casks. This same philosophy lead to Glen Garioch creating enormous greenhouses near the distillery for the cultivation of fruits, vegetables and flowers by employing the excess heat from the distillery. An ingenious environmentally friendly approach that would be applauded today! The greenhouses continued until the early '90s when the project was ceased. It seemed that the marketing of fruit and vegetables was slightly different to whisky, and juggling between the two in an increasingly competitive market place proved difficult. In 1995, following Suntory's purchase, the distillery was mothballed when ownership was transferred to Beam-Suntory's subsidiary 'Morrison Bowmore'.

Following its reawakening in 1997, the distillery released a series of bottlings. Clearly, the new owners have great confidence in the quality of the malt here, with all of its production dedicated to single malt rather than blends. The equipment is now modern. Stainless steel washbacks and short ferments bestow " a deep cereal and spice note to the new spirit which also has a distinctive waxy, tallow-like, character". Until recently, the house style has remained unpeated.

Glenfarclas 15 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Gift Pack with 2 Glasses
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $169. 99
    Bottle
    $2039.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Comes with two Glenfarclas branded Glencairn whisky glasses.

Famous as one of Speyside’s most masculine whiskies, Glenfarclas 15 is matured in 60% x-Sherry casks, with the remainder x-Bourbon, but with a difference. The latter barrels are shaved back in order to minimise their flavour input, putting the focus almost completely on the sherry. Bottled at 46%, the result is one of most full-bodied in the Glenfarclas stable. It's also one that tasters tend to notice the most batch variation in. Re-tasted in early 2022, the latest bottling takes some time to develop and blow off minor sulphur blemishes. Aromas pick up speed, echoed in attractively sherried flavours of raisin cake, fruit mince pie and digestif biscuits. The finish adds suggestions of pickled ginger and baking spices. Though not long, the flavours are surprisingly intense, well-proportioned and approachable without dilution. Give a freshly opened bottle thirty minutes to begin to show its best. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Some classic sherried Speysider that everyone should have tried. WF 84 last time I had, but that was in… 2006 (feeling shame here at WF Towers). Colour: gold. Nose: not that different from the 10, just cake-ier, more sherried, and rather more complex, with small herbs, a mossy side, and a large chocolate cake. Touches of yeasty porridge in the background. Fresh pumpernickel bread. Mouth: really very cake-y, malty, with raisins and some very lovely touches of spearmint. I’m also finding a delicate wood smoke, as well as the usual walnuts when we’re having a sherried malt such as this one. Goody good. Finish: rather long, and shall I dare mention Christmas cakes? And yet it’s not heavy. Comments: I just couldn’t tell you which one I like best, between the 10 and the 15. Both are top class in their categories. 46% Alc.Vol. 84 points - whiskyfun.com

...Energetic, heady, rich. Wakes up the palate and demands to be heard. The marshmallow note is uncanny and overpowers the rest of the dram at points, but overall this regains its footing, albeit with a somewhat abbreviated finish. All in, a step up from the 12 year old expression and solid value for money. - malt-review.com

    ABV: 60%

In 1968, Chairman George S Grant (4th generation) selected and bottled a cask at natural strength for family and friends as a Christmas gift. The liquid was 105 British proof which is equivalent to 60% alcohol by volume. The high strength whisky was so popular that George continued to bottle Glenfarclas at 105 proof making it one of the first official releases of cask strength Scotch whisky in the world. So the Glenfarclas 105 was born! In 2023, the new management sought to up the ante with a proper age statement at this potent ABV with a very limited bottling of 16-year-old curated by Distillery Manager, Callum Fraser and Managing Director, Douglas Belford. Embodying the full bodied Glenfarclas style, it's reported that this is limited to around 5000 bottles globally.

Notes from the producers... Colour: Rich copper. Nose: Instant notes of soft butterscotch, vanilla essence, and exquisite bold spices. Taste: Deeply complex flavours with stewed berry fruits, melted butter toffee combined with freshly baked almond biscuits. Finish: A velvet finish with lingering notes of subtle sherry and tantalising dark chocolate that leaves you wanting more.

If you ever wondered what the fuss over Glenfarclas' Family casks was all about but couldn't afford to find out, don't hesitate to start here. As much as we'd like to imagine that this whisky will be enjoyed amongst friends, it has all the hallmarks of a collectable: a tiny outturn from a distillery with pedigree, first-rate liquid and a bespoke label. You might drink one and try to keep the other, but our bet is the second bottle is going to prove too tempting. In fact, you could not do much better from any of the distillery's neighbours at this age: Cask #51 buries young Macallan or Glendronach and is almost dripping with sherry, kicking off with juicy dried apricots, dried prunes, raisin cake and cinnamon over hints of chocolate oranges in a caramel setting, wrapped up in a mid palate succulence that's pure and sustained while showing extraordinary balance and mouthfeel. The malt and sherry sweetness gently bitters as the sugars wear off and spices enter. Add water, and the entire profile remains beautifully defined. It's young Speyside malt showing off in an audacious fashion that sets it apart from Glenfarclas' official releases. Distilled in 2014 and filled into a first-fill Sherry hogshead before decanting in November 2022, 160 bottles are available for those fortunate enough to get their hands on one. Anybody who knows about 'AREA 51' from UFO folklore will understand the cryptic label reference - an alien is jealously guarding a cask (word has got around, Glenfarclas make some of the best whisky in the galaxy!) 59.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

With the Edrington group having priced extra-aged Macallans well beyond the reach of the average wallet, (pay $4000+ for the 25YO) Sherry enthusiasts searching for that something special have few options left. Enter Glenfarclas: When you buy a bottle of this you support one of Scotland's only independent family-owned distilleries.

Quarter-century aged Scotch is not getting cheaper. Arran, Dalwhinnie, Glenfiddich, Highland Park, Old Pulteney, Laphroaig, Talisker, Caol Ila, Glenrothes and Glengoyne currently have an average retail price of close to $700. Add Macallan, Lagavulin, Springbank and Ardbeg to the mix and the average jumps up to around $1200! It's inevitable that the price for 25 year old single malt Scotch will settle somewhere between these two values. (Even Single Grains and Blends with similar age statements are becoming less and less accessible).

Tasting note: Bright gold with a pale straw hue. Some real class and depth to the nose which offers powerful aromas of prune, roasted nuts, honey and freshly polished floorboards. Smells expensive. Mouthfilling, and with an unexpected degree of 'tingle' for whisky of this age. Glorious at mid palate, serving up delicious honey and dried fruit flavours over rich, spicy, sugar-laced malt. Medium long with a delicate aftertaste of dried fruit and sweet leather. Aristocratic. Would make a perfect after dinner malt. Some tasters drew comparisons with Macallan 18. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... This flavorful single malt offers enticing caramel on nose and palate, enlivened with marmalade and spicy cinnamon. The finish is long and mouthwatering, warming all the way down, closing with salted caramel, dark chocolate and orange peel. 93 points - wineenthusiast.com

...Earthy notes of dried leaves, wet wool, and a hint of maltiness start things off on the nose, then citrus and red apple. The palate is sweet and balanced, offering warm apple tart, cinnamon, cooked blueberries, raisins, toffee, and Christmas cake, with a slight and appealing hint of soapiness. A lengthy finish brings chocolate cake, glazed orange, pfeffernusse cookies, and winter spice. A delicious holiday warmer. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: David Fleming 2021

"epitomically Glenfiddichian... long, on apples, marzipan and amaretti." - whiskyfun.com

Along with Number 4, Vat 03 in Glenfiddich's Travel Retail Perpetual Collection is arguably the more appealing for drinkers, partly because of its age statement and partly because it lands at a higher ABV than numbers one and two. Also created via a Solera vat process which adds continuous layers of flavour by only ever bottling half the whisky in the vats before refilling, this edition was matured in x-sherry European oak and x Bourbon casks. Tasted straight, Vat 03 delivers vibrant orchard fruits and vanillan oak giving the sensation of fruit yoghurt, or perhaps the whisky equivalent of peaches and cream. Adding ice or water instantly emphasises the zero chill filtration, ramping up the juicy, malty mouthfeel and providing a finishing lick of vanilla, baking spice and hints of marzipan. Aimed at showcasing 'Fiddich's signature style, Vat 03 is predictably true to the malt they churn out in large volumes - and for good reason - it’s proved hugely popular and is incredibly accessible, only here there’s more of everything, which means extra bang for your buck. It's yet another delicious, seamless, and dare we say, smashable Glenfiddich. You'll find it hard to stop at one. 50.2% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... There's new oak, bourbon and European oak sherry inside. Colour: gold. Nose: feels bourbony at first, with even a little putty and light varnish, as well as marzipan, before it would become all a matter of apples (and a few pears), something that I've always found epitomically Glenfiddichian. Fresh, stewed, a juice, as compote, even as jam, even as eau-de-vie (some varietals do work, others remain bland). With water: the largest bag of ripe and overripe apples ever, plus a little maraschino and marzipan. Mouth (neat): really sweet. Apple compote with some honey and a cinnamon/nutmeg spice combo. Feels a touch fizzy, like good cider. No problems. With water: water brings a soapiness onto the palate (saponification), a soapiness that takes its time before it would leave us alone. The good news is that after around ten minutes, we're left with more wonderful apples and rather notes of Turkish delights. Finish: long, on apples, marzipan and amaretti. And perhaps an ultra-tiny soapiness remaining in a corner (nope, haven't changed water). Pears in the aftertaste, which makes it even more Glenfiddichian. Comments: very good cuvée but be careful with water. 84 points - whiskyfun.com

Notes from the producers... Nose: Intriguingly complex aroma with sweet heather honey and vanilla fudge combined with rich dark fruits. Taste: Silky smooth revealing layers of sherry oak, marzipan, cinnamon and ginger. Full bodied and bursting with flavour. Finish: Satisfyingly rich with lingering sweetness.

The Perpetual series was unveiled in mid 2022 as travel retail exclusives. Four whiskies showing off the distillery’s signature solera vat maturation process make up the range. The vat system never runs dry. Instead, a portion is removed and the remainder is topped up with fresh liquid. This allows the latest batch to take on some characteristics of the older product. The process originated from Spanish sherry production, which Glenfiddich’s fifth Malt Master, David Stewart adapted in 1998 to produce their core 15-year-old single malt. According to him, it allows whisky from different casks to better integrate. Only half the whisky in Glenfiddich’s large solera vats is bottled at any one time.

Of the four malts in the Perpetual Collection, the most easily approached is Vat 01, a combination of Bourbon and wine cask-matured whiskies that's sweet, soft, and smooth. Glenfiddich have honed the style over the decades and in this bottling, they've perfected the art of delivering a 40% abv whisky with character or depth. Admittedly, its predictable fusion of creamy, biscuity malt and subtle nashi pear fruitiness resembles many other Glenfiddichs, but when you just want a decent dram at a fair price, consistency and reliability is often a big part of the equation. Incentivise further with a one-litre format and you have an easy buying decision.

Aged in Spanish sherry casks, Vat 02 presents a more complex and luscious character. Both have no age statements. The 15-year-old Vat 03 showcases Glenfiddich’s signature style. Matured in European oak sherry and Bourbon casks, it's silky and full-bodied delivering warm notes of spice, nutty marzipan, and dried figs. The final in the series is also deemed the most extravagant. Vat 04 is treated in oloroso sherry and Bourbon casks for 18 years for a deeper profile.

Notes from the producers... Beautifully fragrant and floral. Summer blossom notes with hints of creamy vanilla toffee and subtle oakiness. A touch of zesty citrus in the background. TASTE: Very soft and mellow with a lovely balance of oak and the trademark Glenfiddich character. Layers of sweetness and spice with hints of freshly ground pepper. FINISH: Delicate and smooth.

2014 marked a benchmark with "Torfa" - the first peated whisky from this revived distillery, fully matured in ex-bourbon barrels and peated to 20ppm. It takes its name from the Old Norse language with which the Scots dialect spoken in North East Scotland has an affinity and translates to “turf” or “peat”. One the nose, white pepper and sweet earthy phenols combine with beeswax and biscuity malt becoming more cocoa-like after extended time in the glass. The full bodied, succulent delivery offers toasted barley, hints of fruit and a superb slathering of sweet peat that melts in your mouth with near zero heat, buzzing spices ricocheting through the finish. An uncomplicated but very pure smokey Highland style. 50% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Other reviews... Appears happy and well suited in its new smoky incarnation. 90 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024

...Torfa is old Norse for “peat,” and this Scotch delivers on that promise with delicacy and finesse. Light golden in the glass, the nose shows a vanilla aroma tinged with peat smoke and oak accents. The palate is bright and briny up front, with a peat smoke character becoming more pronounced with each successive sip. That smoky-saline balance provokes cravings for oysters and aged cheeses. 92 points - wineenthusiast.com

Bonfire smoke, ozone, orchard fruits, malt, and black pepper are present on the nose. Slightly savory on the smooth palate, with sweet peat smoke, honey, dark chocolate, and a very mild maritime note. Ginger, apricot, and more sweet peat in the finish. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com

First tasted April 2014... Pale straw gold. Opening sniff detects hints of vanilla wafer biscuit, dried grass and white pepper; more cocoa like after exposure as mild peat infuses dark chocolate, accentuating with time in the glass. Quite sweet but remains in check with the mid palate featuring juicy vanilla malt and the finish highlighting the peat as wet-wool / lanolin. Controlled spices add length and continue into an attractive choc-peat fade. Smokey, but in an accessible Caol Ila kind of way. Nicely done. 93 points

Glenglassaugh has been described as a 'coastal' distillery, being located in northern Speyside near Glen Deveron and Banff. Founded in 1875, between 1960 and 1986 it produced malt whiskies for the blending market, in particular the Cutty Sark and Famous Grouse blends. However, it suffered from the recession riddled decline that plagued the Scotch whisky industry in the early 1980s and was mothballed in 1986. It restarted production in November 2008 after being acquired by independent investors, the Edrington Group, following a complete refurbishment by the new owners.

The malt has always been popular with blenders so few official distillery bottlings have ever made it to market. Until recently, that is. In 2009 the new company released some of the old stocks with outstanding success. At the 2009 International Wine and Spirit Competition Awards the 30 Year Old expression was awarded a Gold Medal (Best in Class) and the trophy for Best Cask Strength Scotch Whisky and the 40 Year Old was awarded Gold Medal (Best in Class) and the trophy for Best 40 Year Old Scotch Whisky. The 40 year old was also awarded Best 40 Year Old Scotch Whisky and 96 points in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible.

Glenglassaugh Revival is the first widely-available single malt from the resurrected distillery and comes matured in both first and refill casks then finished in first-fill oloroso sherry butts for a period of six months. It presents a teasing bouquet that rewards patience; gradually developing with sponge cake, vanilla, cream biscuits and fresh oak. Deliciously crisp on delivery, evoking caramelised fruits and cream tea biscuits, balanced by suggestions of lemon tart and straw at the finish. Like its sister bottling 'Torfa' , this boasts lovely purity and poise and represents a massive improvement over its first incarnation (circa 2013). 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Matured in a combination of used red-wine casks and Bourbon barrels, then finished in oloroso Sherry barrels, this honey-hued Scotch has a Sherried peach-nectar aroma. The palate shows notes of almond and cedar, finishing with hits of lemon peel and smoke. 89 points - wineenthusiast.com

First tasted January 2013: [from a 10 ml sample]. Pale gold. Scents of flat ginger beer and vague cereals present in the initial pass, gaining sweetness and definition with subsequent sniffs. Opens light and lively in the mouth though a tad sulphury followed by bittersweet spices at mid palate. Warming spirit. Thins out, tailing off to a delicate and rather fleeting conclusion. 86 points

Rounded and poised with a chocolaty edge to the malt, following through to a juicy, textural finish featuring tangy tropical fruits and a spicy burst that fans out in the mouth, it's a malt with a fine sweet-dry balance marking a step up from it's cask strength predecessor. Delicious. Matured in x Tennessee whiskey barrels. 50% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Vanilla and almond aromas are echoed on the palate, alongside a strong resin note and a gentler wave of smoke. At 100 proof, there's a predictable wallop of alcohol heat on the close. 87 points - wineenthusiast.com

"...having been steered on a slightly different course again it is just excellent... An expression that has evolved slowly, but quite beautifully." - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023

The French Oak Reserve is generally considered one of the better values in the Glenlivet stable. Jim Murray certainly thinks so, giving this mid-range malt a strong recommendation - and he's not the only one. The distillery was one of Scotland's first to employ French oak for ageing whisky. Specifically, Limousin oak, sourced from France’s Dordogne region, the only French forest that is predominantly Quercus Robur. The toughness and coarse (open) grain of the species is a result of nutrient-deficient soils, restricting vertical growth to shorter, wider trunks. It places Limousin oak at one end of the scale in terms of looseness of grain. A consequence is that the release of flavours is aggressive and more oak tannin is extracted than from other oak types, hence, it's used almost exclusively for the maturation of spirits like Cognac rather than wine. In the case of Glenlivet, the whisky is selectively finished in Limousin oak so as not to overpower the fruitiness of the distillate. The wood's low density allows the spirit to cycle deeply in and out of the staves, adding a distinctive and pleasing spiciness that's different to the vanilla-heavy American oak. Bottled at 40%, Glenlivet's French Oak Reserve is not a heavy malt, but at the right price, you do get a terrific everyday drinker.

Other reviews… Many years ago when this first came out it wasn't very good, to be honest. Then it was re-shaped, upped a gear and became a very enjoyable dram, indeed. Now having been steered on a slightly different course again it is just excellent... An expression that has evolved slowly, but quite beautifully. 93 points - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2023

...Antique amber color. This whisky maintains the elegance cherished by Glenlivet enthusiasts, but finishing the whisky in limousin oak produces a whisky of deeper wood notes, particularly wood spices (vanilla, sandalwood, perhaps even mint) and floral notes. It's rich, complex, and dry-especially on the finish. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com

First whiffs pick up scents of fresh pineapple, cedar, and paraffin; later sniffings detect subtle notes of baked pear and sweet oak. Palate entry features a firm, moderately oily, and velvety texture; by midpalate, integrated flavors of ripe peach, pear drops and bran delight the taste buds. Finish is extended, semisweet and coconut-like. Replaces the 12-year-old French Oak Finish. Best Buy. 90-95 points - wineenthusiast.com

...The nose has notes of honey, oak, baked apples, ginger, dark chocolate, and hints of almond and hazelnut. The taste has cinnamon, vanilla, and baked apples, along with hints of pineapple juice and mango that add a fruity touch that lingers through the finish. (May, 2013) 90 points - whiskycast.com

It's no secret that Glenmoragnie's Head of Whisky Creation loves to be creative. Dr. Bill Lumsden began experimenting with adding peated barley to the mix about twenty years ago, but never anticipated sales for the category to explode in the way they have. Indeed, it’s only been in the past few years that Glenmorangie have realised the potential for smokey styles. To ensure this expression doesn’t overwhelm drinkers with its peaty character, fifty percent of the malt is traditional, non-peated Glenmorangie. Reportedly, there’s a little bit of smoke upfront but then it’s very fragrant, more floral like hay that’s dried out on a farm, cut grass and fresh flowers, even a little bit of milk chocolate. The style is a genuine throwback to the distillery's past, paying tribute to the historic use of a peat fired kiln (yes, many a Highlander used to be peated!) Aged in bourbon casks, like the other three in this value series, you get a large format bottled at a slightly higher ABV of 43%.

Other reviews... Lemon pith and lime marmalade on the nose begin a citrus theme that leads into the bright, green fruit driven palate with tangy salinity and elegant peat character. Beautifully refined. 94 points - International Wine & Spirits Competition

...Nose: A charcoal barbeque chock-a-block with tropical fruits. Mango, pineapple and kiwis all grilling away with a sprinkling of coconut flakes, lavender infused rock salt and then some shards of white chocolate. Palate: Waves of tobacco smoke, plasticine and burnt coffee granules join the succulent fruit notes from the nose. Finish: A delightfully waxy element to it and a hint of smoky florals towards the end. Comment: If a box of crayons were fruit flavoured and being stored in a smokehouse. - whiskymag.com

"...Earthy smoky notes and delicate oak tannins are balanced by acacia honey, ripe apple and vanilla, all enlivened by a touch of clove and black pepper spice." 5 stars - diffordsguide.com

One litre format. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Nose: Quite gentle at first. Strawberries, dark chocolate and cracked black pepper, just a touch of aged balsamic. Slabs of toffee and rose petals, peanut brittle. Soft as possible wood notes. Oak chests. Palate: Sweet and all that honey comes in. Fruit as well with those strawberries, oak gets a grip. Fizzy sherbet. Treacle tart, jammy with plump blackcurrants. Finish: Long, sweet and honeyed, just a hint of bitter walnut skin to balance it. Ginger prickle eventually. Comment: Fairly well balanced and straight forward too. - whiskymag.com

The youngest in a trio of Travel Retail exclusives, those already familiar with Glenmorangie's 'Lasanta' may find similarities here. While the Lasanta is finished in Oloroso and Pedro Ximinez sherry casks, 'The Accord' is aged in ex-bourbon and finished in Oloroso only. The result is “a punch of richness, depth and spiciness that great sherry whisky should have,” says Brand Ambassador, Brendan McCarron. It's otherwise summed up as a fruity and rich Glenmorangie showcasing Bill Lumsden's expertise in marrying casks. x Bourbon barrels deliver smooth, fruity notes while oloroso sherry adds gentle sweetness and spice. One litre format. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Nose: It’s like someone mixed apple crumble in with Playdoh. There’s then waves of freshly cooked doughnuts with Nutella and mint choc-chip ice cream. Palate: Nutty and rich with toasted walnuts and cinnamon oats to begin with which is slowly followed by poached pears and smoked Applewood. Slight grassy hints of morning dew appear. Finish: A creamy consistency with charred oak notes creating a subtle smokiness. Comment: Every possible food group in a glass. What more could you possibly want?!

"...unspoiled Sherry casks at work. An absolute must for Sherry lovers." - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2020

Glenrothes’ owners The Edrington Group are instigating some significant changes at the distillery. An upgrade is scheduled in the coming years and the marketing emphasis has already taken a dramatic shift towards 'ultra premium' bottlings. The ten and twelve-year-olds as well as the Whisky Maker's Cut are all discontinued, at least in Australia, with the range now starting at 18 years. However alternative reports suggest they’ve stopped making them altogether, which is supported by the fact that these products are now archived on the Glenrothes website and listed as sold out at major UK retailers. Whatever the case, knowing the strong following for this distillery, we’ve bought up big and negotiated Australia’s best deals. Opportunity knocks!

In and out of the country over the last few years and at variable pricing, the Whisky Maker's Cut was originally exclusive to an Australian Whisky Club where it sold for $125; elsewhere it's been selling for up to AU$140. We've secured an even better price again with a scoop buy on the last domestic stocks. Matured in first-fill sherry casks, bottled at the Master Distiller's preferred strength and rated 95 points by Jim Murray, this will attract drinkers more than collectors. The aroma wavers to and fro from sweeter notes of fresh prunes, dried apricots and candied orange peel to drier scents of leather handbag, cocoa and light prickles of alcohol. Early oak and baking spice flavours develop before dates and wisps of vanilla. Extra kick from the higher strength adds depth, especially with the spike of intensity at the finish. The final stages turn leaner and spicier, but the balance is good. In short, plenty for Sherry heads to enjoy - and at a very reasonable price. As the undisputed bargain of the Soleo collection, expect it to go fast. 48.8% Alc./Vol.

...The nose offers rich fruit—plums and sultanas—with milk chocolate and new leather. The palate is silky and luxurious, with medium-sweet sherry, vanilla, blackcurrants, and treacle. Dark berries and black pepper in the lengthy, mildly oaky finish. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Gavin Smith (Summer 2019)

No age statement, but a considerably higher abv here. That higher alcohol level really makes the sherry pop on the nose, although I also get a bit of a smoky kick here that I didn’t find in any of the other whiskies. On the palate, that smoky element lingers, giving the body a peppery, beefy note that is slightly at odds with the citrus-driven sherry notes. The beefy, smoky elements continue to reign on the finish, alongside a somewhat green note.  - drinkhacker.com

2003 Gordon & Macphail Speymalt from Macallan 20 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $999. 00
    Bottle
    $11988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 57.7%

Gordon & Macphail announced several years ago that their 'Speymalt from Macallan' series will continue to be bottled occasionally, however, they'll only be released in 'selected' worldwide markets. Australia doesn't seem to be one of those, and we suspect the whisky in question was scheduled for the US. Twenty years old, single cask, cask strength and sourced from one of Scotland's most prestigious independents, good things have been said about some of these early 2000 G&M Macallans - no doubt partly because the bottler continues a practice of filling and maturing in their own casks rather than buying 'ready made' malts and then finishing them off for a year or two. This way, G&M maintain as much quality control as is possible for an indie. Judging by the colour alone, this looks to have been very active on the sherry front and has all the hallmarks of a strong distillery expression. Presumably non-chill filtered, but not stated on the label, cask #13603609 yielded 298 bottles at 57.7% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the bottlers... Sweet stewed fruit aromas with cinnamon and ginger spice. The palate has forest fruits, toasted hazelnuts and black pepper. The finish has charred oak and citrus peel.

    2024 Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc
    Marlborough, NEW ZEALAND
    $26. 99

    Cellar: Drink now - 2 Years (2025-2027)

Greywacke is the Marlborough label of former Cloudy Bay winemaker Kevin Judd, where he presided over that company’s first 25 vintages establishing the reputation that it has today. The name Greywacke was adopted by Kevin and his wife Kimberley for their first Marlborough vineyard in Rapaura, named in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the soils of the vineyard. Kevin registered the name back in 1992 with the vague notion that he might one day want to use it on a wine label of his own.
Fruit was sourced from various prime vineyard sites in Marlborough’s Southern Valleys and the central Wairau Plains with a portion of the juice fermented in old oak barrels.
Brilliant water like core with greenish tinged edges. Pungent nose with aromas of passionfruit, herbaceous gooseberry and lime leaping out of the glass. Subtle green apple, stony mineral and grassy notes ensue. Scrumptious passionfruit, lime and green apple fruits burst across the palate with terrific intensity. Complimenting delicate herbaceous gooseberry, subtle grassy and flinty mineral elements also chime in. Displaying outstanding power and textural volume it has crisp acidity and a long, zesty finish.
Drink over the next 1-2 years.

The 2024 Sauvignon Blanc was hand delivered to me in Fremantle by winemaker Richelle Tyney from Greywacke, all the way from Marlborough, New Zealand—roughly 5,200 kilometers between us. The wine leads with passion fruit and white pineapple, green apple, beeswax and brine. The wine is salty, fine and sedate—the characters are all in balance with each other. I love this wine from this small producer. It is intense and concentrated, shaped by savory phenolics and loaded with crunchy New Zealand acidity. This speaks of the place in a clear, unfettered voice, and it's brilliant for that. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2030.

Fermented predominately in old oak barrels using wild yeast then matured in the same barrels for around 6 months with occasional lees stirring. Approximately two-thirds underwent malolactic fermentation.
Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Jumping out of the glass is a complex mix of herbaceous gooseberry, guava, citrus, grassy asparagus, pencil shaving and subtle gun flint notes. Mouthfilling gooseberry and passionfruit flavours are delivered with excellent concentration and textural volume across the palate. Lending further interest are notions of herbaceous grassy characters, asparagus and spicy pencil shavings. Enveloping yet refreshing it has crisp acidity finishing dry, long and savoury.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.

Lots of character to this, with apples, pears, popcorn kernels and blanched nuts. It’s medium-bodied with delicious fruit and a flavorful finish. A serious savuignon blanc for chardonnay lover. Flinty and reductive at the end. Screw cap.

A stunning white, aromatic and supple, with wild fennel, quince, pear and green papaya flavors on a creamy frame. Aromatic details of mango and honeysuckle, with a whiff of flint, emerge on the finish, which just goes on and on. Drink now.

Sourced from a few sites across Marlborough’s Southern Valleys and the central Wairau Plains. Spontaneous indigenous yeast fermentation in French oak barriques. Occasional lees stirring. Around two thirds underwent mlf and was left on yeast lees for six months. Winter melon, jackfruit and pandan. Nettle, fiddlehead and blackberry. A hint of lemon verbena and honeycomb. Ground cumin spices lead into the crashing waves of acidity, oat milk creaminess and some white pepper powder. This is a mosaic of fruit, spice and fernery with power and eons of detail. A wine that can be picked over for its composition or equally enjoyed in a burgundy glass from aperitif to main meal. Drink by 2034.

After a high flying career in marketing Ingrid Groiss returned to her family origins, enrolling in viticulture, oenology and wine marketing at the University of Vienna. During those studies she gained experience with producers such as Domäne Wachau, Birgit Braunstein and Birgit Eichinger. She had to play second fiddle to her chief winemaker dad until in 2010 when she went head-to-head with him in a blind taste-off of their own wines, with the victor being handed the winemaker's reins. Needless to say Ingrid came out on top.
Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Intense pear, red apple skin and musk aromas flood the nostrils followed by some quince and delicate spice notes. Delicious pear and red apple fruits glide across the palate imparting a slippery feel along the course of their journey. Juicy, crisp acidity lifts the intensity of flavour even further. Quince, lime, infusions of fresh herbs and wet stone elements also chime in. Excellent concentration finishing with an energized zing on the long moreish finish. A wonderful entry level example of Gruner Veltliner.
    Drink over the next year.
