2021 Nicks Secret PE HYD Coonawarra Shiraz

Yet another fabulous value release from this highly acclaimed Coonawarra estate made by the 2024 James Halliday’s Wine Companion’s winemaker of the year. Maturation took place in French oak barrels (20% new) for a period of 9 months.

Rich, concentrated and plush, this is a super impressive Coonawarra Shiraz for the price.

Dense inky black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Liquorice, blackberry and choc mint scents show admirable intensity with spicy vanillin cedar and peppered earth notes also chiming in. Rich, concentrated and plush, the palate is super impressive for the price with fleshy blackberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits carrying medium to full body weight. Subtlety smoked vanillin cedar and peppered earth elements lurk beneath. Velvety yet sturdily built tannins impart a robust feel across the long finish that sees the emergence of some subtle choc mint characters.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.

Fermented with 30% whole bunches then matured in all-French oak. There's a sweetness to the flavour profile here, as is shiraz's want, which gives the wine a general feeling of cuddliness. We're sinking into raspberries, red cherries and musk here, with slips of vanilla custard and cedar, too, though it's fruit, fresh and delicious, that does the bulk of the talking. Spice and stalk-like flavours are present but not dangerous. Everything here talks of balance, and it drinks a treat in result. Drink by 2030.
