2013 Dalgety Glen Spey Small Batch 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $129. 99
    Bottle
    $1559.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50.2%

Considered by several whisky writers as "one of the most 'obscure' distilleries in Scotland", Glen Spey would have continued to slip under the radar of malt chasers, had it not been for a handful of favorable releases. Formerly known as the "Mill of Rothes", it was built in 1878 by James Stuart & Co (who later went on to buy the Macallan distillery). Always intended as a filler for blends, the particularity of the distillery style resides in its production method. As with its neighbour, Glen Grant, pot stills are equipped with "purifiers", redirecting some vapour to reflux within the still to produce a less feinty and lighter spirit.

For this bottling, Gregor Hannah has selected a pair ex-port casks. One of the casks is a refill ex-ruby cask but the other is barrique which has been seasoned with a premium ’Super Porto’ wine from the Douro River Valley. Married for a suitable time, these casks balance out the distillate's fruit and spice notes with the secondary maturaiton leaving notes of red berry compote, spiced biscuits, cloves, cinnamon, Turkish delight and black forrest gateau. 681 bottles produced. 50.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

2011 Dalgety Glen Moray Small Batch 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $134. 99
    Bottle
    $1619.88 Dozen
    ABV: 52.5%

Another fruit salad Glen Moray, in the best possible way, no doubt partly due to the the fact that refill hogsheads have been used. These were combined and married in a butt for a couple of months before bottling. Hannah considers Glen Moray one of the most underrated whiskeys on the market, an opinion backed up by this simply delicious malt. Textural and mouth watering with fruit confectionary and vanilla flavours that are borderline lush, fine tannins and acids relieve what could have fallen flat in the wrong cask type. Nicely done. 683 bottles at 52.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... A range from Hannah Whisky Merchants. A simple refill hogshead such as this one should be perfect. Colour: white wine. Nose: one is reminded of icing sugar, lime zest, broken tree branches, cactus, green apple... All of this, we like. With water: damp chalk and raw wool stand out, along with a bit of porridge, grist, damp peat with also a hint of eucalyptus... Nothing to fault, it's really perfect, of great purity. Mouth (neat): very citrusy and on green apple, extremely lively, with a bit of green pepper and a hint of fruit candy, like lemon and grapefruit. Perfect tension, very refreshing. With water: and there you have it, the texture thickens, there's limoncello, pink pepper, crème de menthe, anise, and a tiny touch of chilli. Finish: long, fresh, lemony, and minty. Comments: when people speak of desert island drams they mention old Lagavulins or Laphroaigs from the 1960s. In reality, it's this kind of Glen Moray that would be more appropriate. But in a double-magnum. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

Notes from the bottlers... Director Gregor Hannah and Brand Ambassador Paul Mckendrick carefully hand select casks from their extensive portfolio to create this unique and harmonious small batch single malt whisky. A classic example, fully matured in a pair of refill hogsheads for 12 years allowing the soft and gentle, vanilla and honeyed nature of this make to shine through. Tasting revealed - pecan, honey, caramel wafer, white grape, black pepper and walnut.

    Kitajima Strawberry Yuzushu (720ml)
    Shiga, JAPAN
    $64. 99
    Bottle
    $779.88 Dozen
    ABV: 7%
    Closure: Screw Cap

A new twist in the yuzushu space this time sees Shiga brewers Kitajima mix Shizuoka's famous Beni Hoppe strawberries with sake and fresh yuzu juice. Lush and viscous in the glass, the fresh strawberry notes are delicate, layered with guava, watermelon, and meringue. Strawberries and cream dominate the initial tasting, leading to tropical guava juice, while the deft yuzu citrus lift at the finish works wonders to keep this bright and refreshing. A moreish aperitif chilled on its own, it would also excel in strawberry cocktails or even topped with prosecco for a gorgeous pink toned spritz. 7% Alc./Vol. Refrigerate after opening.

A formidable Durif that boasts imposing power and structure.

Matured for 11 months in new French and American oak puncheons. Super saturated inky black heart with an equally deep black dark red hue – about as densely coloured as a wine can get. Potent ripe morello cherry, liquorice, dark chocolate and vanillin oak aromas waft through the nostrils followed by hints of ripe blueberry and spice. Rich, mouth coating ripe morello cherry, liquorice and dark plum flavours are framed by vibrant acidity and muscular tannins. Spicy vanillin oak, earth and blueberry elements linger underneath. Despite it’s pedal to the metal power, it finishes remarkably fresh, long and juicy with a stern structure.

2013 Lady of the Glen Glenlossie Single Cask #5306 11 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $139. 99
    Bottle
    $1679.88 Dozen
    ABV: 58.4%

A less fruity style of Glenlossie which could be put down to the three year Oloroso spell that has added a dried peel tang. Otherwise, concentrated, nippy and a little tannic. Attractive touches of dry triple sec lift the finish, the aftertaste flattening with caramel and milk chocolate in tow. 261 bottles at 58.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... A light bodied distillate and a fairly modern style of Speyside whisky where the vast majority of output is destined for blends, we rescued this cask from mediocrity. More than 3 year finish in our famous oloroso cask sourced from Hidalgo cooperage in Spain has offered the spirit a softer side of ex-sherry with more of a toffee and caramel character rather than the expected Christmas cake and dried fruit notes. Tasting revealed - pastel de nata, black tea and orange zest.

    $1799.88 Dozen

The famously peated Highlander gets a first-fill oloroso finish. Shy, fruity and floral-soft to start, faint phenols mingle with the sherry to give the impression of roasted nuts and sweet hay. Flips on the palate delivering a wonderfully textural, mouth-filling malt, laced with chimney soot, the oily residue leaves way for a fruity-malt-forward experience, and as the peat accentuates over time, the complexity keeps you coming back. Out of the ordinary. 313 bottles at 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Chocolate raisin, coffee grounds, honey on toast.

A four-vineyard, six-clone blend; 20% wholes bunches, 15% new oak. A bright crimson red. A lifted bouquet redolent of summer red fruits, poached rhubarb, rose bush and white pepper. Rich dark plum, liquorice and blackberry fruits are delivered with plenty of concentration over a spicy vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered earth back drop. Heathcote shiraz that brings both the expected ripe, black-fruited intensity of the region's number-one red grape variety balanced with a high degree of elegance. It's a most attractive combination. Lifted aromatics of plum, black cherry and cassis with heady spices and gentle toasty oak. It sits easily, flows effortlessly, but, boy, there is so much life here. It's the best of both worlds: for now and beyond. Drink by 2036.

    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $220. 00
    Bottle
    $2640.00 Dozen
    ABV: 58.2%

A double sherried Longmorn - first oloroso matured, then finished in a fresh PX hogshead. Sublime on the nose, the wine mingles naturally with Longmorn’s honeyed, toasted cereal tones, however the palate takes a more bittersweet turn, run through with peppered poached pears, fruit-filled bitter dark chocolates and late orange spice cake, tongue tingling heat rising into the aftertaste. Atypical Longmorn, very textural with quite the attack. 297 bottles at 58.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... The sister cask of the very popular Longmorn we bottled last year, this sophisticated Speyside whisky lends itself well to active cask maturation and that’s exactly what we have here. Matured for most of its life in a 2nd fill oloroso butt we then transferred it to a fresh ex-PX hogshead for 17 months adding sweetness and enhance the sherry character already present. Tasting revealed - Fruit Cake, cinnamon and walnut.

    Bottle
    $1859.88 Dozen
    ABV: 55.7%

The Madeira finish has had an influence on the nose, though not enough to eclipse the bright fruit character of the distillate. Intense biscuity malt climaxes with a zing, while a nectarine and feijoa-like fruitiness rises through the later stages - strikingly similar to the rebound on some hors d'Age cognacs. A fascinating, odd-ball malt in a league of its own. 200 bottles at 55.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Madeira Finish. A light bodied distillate produced at high strength in Loch Lomond's straight neck pot stills. Aged in a hogshead and finished in a first fill ex-Madeira cask for layers of caramel, walnut and citrus. This distillery is famous for its ability to consistently produce many different styles of spirit including grain spirit too. Inchmurrin is one of their lighter styles distilled in straight neck still with a higher cut point producing a light fruity style. This combined with well over a year finish in a Madeira cask has produced a lovely toffee and caramel character. Tasting revealed - banoffee, tinned peaches and cake mix.

From the Barossa, and from a stellar vintage, this example of the great Aussie blend of Cabernet and Shiraz is a wine representing seriously good value. The colour is an opaque maroon. This should be interesting. A triple distilled spirit with a 17 month ruby port cask finish. At first subdued on the nose. Air contact opens up notes of soft white fruits and green grassiness. In the mouth, hints of Turkish Delight and rose chocolate. The port contribution feels meek, suggesting dried cranberries and blackberries on the palate, heightening at the finish. Elegant and restrained with aromas of red cherry, rose petals and spices such as Sichuan pepper and star anise together with a little new-oak pencil-shaving scents. The palate is similarly elegant and fine boned and I like the way this keeps building as it sits in the glass. The tannins are superfine and persistent. A new release in the Max & Me quiver, which is sourced from a 'very famous' 150-plus-year-old vineyard east of Springton. I'm pretty sure Phil is referring to the Stonegarden vineyard, which many of the Barossa's top producers use as a source of amazing fruit. Vivid and zesty with impressively pure plum and red berry fruits, a plume of gingery spice and hints of cola, citrus blossom and red licorice. Great velocity and chalky tannin grip all add up to a great little first run for this new wine. Very nice! Drink by 2030.

There is delicious purity to this 2022 Grenache Old Vine Springton Vineyard, It delivers a pretty array of aromas. Layers of raspberry and wild strawberry aromas are lifted by touches of Chinese five spice and red licorice. Beautifully textured and fleshy, with a gentle grip, it offers a creamy texture thanks to excellent fruit volume and intriguing charcuterie and fennel seed layers. Whole bunch tannins rise up to provide the backbone to a lengthy finish. The 2022 is ultra-modern and will offer plenty for the patient over the medium term. Drink 2024-2032.

The Mulline crew have made some exquisite wines in recent years and this 2024 Sutherlands Creek Chardonnay continues that run.
There’s texture and flavour here but it’s the drive through the finish that really elevates the pulse. This chardonnay really does power on. It’s a complex wine with flint, popcorn, roasted nut and grilled peach flavours running into sweet spice, smoky bacon and meal. It announces itself straight up, and then keeps on going through the finish. Top stuff. Excellent wine. Drink 2027-2032+

Mulline is the creation of two Bens, Mullen and Hine, who set out to showcase exciting single site expressions from the Geelong region with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir at its core. Other reviews... An undisclosed single malt from Islay, 25% of which was finished 1st fill oloroso sherry octaves. The name is very 'Atom', while, conversely, I believe 1992 is on the phone asking for its bottling strength back. Colour: gold. Nose: but what's this? An OB Laphroaig 10yo from circa 2002? This very particular aroma of iodine, hessian, seawater and cough medicines. Extremely easy and rather nicely attuned to a very specific aroma of 'peat smoke' in the most classical sense. I find it disconcertingly charming. Mouth: it is probably the bottling strength, but this really does feel like drinking a decent batch of OB Laphroaig 10. There's a few citrus fruits, soft peat smoke and rather a lot of wet rocks and medical embrocations. I have to say, it's quite a lot of fun. Finish: medium, perhaps a tad short, but still nicely medicinal, on iodine, light TCP notes and good old peat smoke. Comments: There's a lot about this that, on paper, I probably shouldn't enjoy because it goes against the modern geek code - whatever that is. But this is actually a rather clever and very good, easy quaffing wee Islay dram. Someone at Beam should go check the Laph 10yo vatting tank for syphons though… either that or Atom have developed cloning technology. If that's the case, do they take requests? Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire is an essentially an independent label developed by the clever marketing team at Atom Brands (the owners of Master of Malt and That Boutique-y Whisky Co in the UK). Whiskies are sourced from an undisclosed Islay distillery with 25% taken from first-fill Oloroso sherry casks. All are bottled non chill filtered. This is the entry level version. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Nose: seaweed and iodine indeed, with a bonfire on a beach and earthy peat. Charcoal and black pepper. All this is mellowed by generous toffee and red apple sweetness, salted peanuts and some medicinal herbs. Actually this is more complex than I expected. Mouth: sweet peat. Now the sherry is more prominent. Peaches with burnt edges, hints of caramel sweets and vanilla pastry. Plum jam. Ashes and light chocolate. Overall rather modest peat. Never grabbing you by the throat, but a rather rich style nonetheless. Hints of aniseed later on. Finish: medium length, on chocolate, honeyed cinnamon pastry and hints of dried seaweed. Warming smoke in the end. While bottled at a low ABV, it offers the classic Islay markers in a nice way. Really affordable and offering a lot of ampersands for the money. Available from Master of Malt for instance. There is also a cask strength version if you prefer something a little stronger, or an 18 year old version. Some of them also add some Speyside whisky to the mix. - whiskynotes.be

Peat and sherry are a great combo, and if you've tasted similar expressions from the Elements of Islay range, you'll already know that the team behind Atom Brands tend to do it very well. This is understood to be the cask strength version of the Seaweed & Aeons 10 year old Sherry Cask edition, featuring the same smoky Islay single malt, though instead of just 25% of it being finished in sherry casks, the entirety of the whisky was. Around 1200 units are offered per batch, this one landing at 54.9% Alc./Vol. and bottled without chill filtration.

Other reviews... [Batch 2 tasted] This one is full sherry finished. Colour: orangey amber. Nose: a notable gear shift, this is much creamier and displays a more velvety smokiness. Resinous hardwoods, smoked teas, verbena, eucalyptus, tea tree oil and smoked meats. The sherry sits behind the peat and doesn't feel too jarring, it's rather more about wood spice and peat smoke together I would say. With water: softer spice tones, coal dust, bonfire embers and this impression of medicinal herbs. Mouth: a similarly easy arrival, all on soft wood spices, smoked teas, sweet peat smoke, natural tars, wood resins, putty and aniseed. More impressions of herbal cough syrups and things like hessian and wormwood. I like it a lot but it strays very close to being a little too wood-dominant for me. With water: not too sure with water, I think it loses a little definition and the alignment between peat and wood goes slightly awry. There's still plenty of sooty and peaty 'oomph' about it though. Finish: rather long, all menthol tobaccos, bitter herbal extracts, spices, liquorice and tar. Comments: this one veers about quite a lot. Lots of emphatic, peaty pleasures to be had, but for me the wood is a tad too much here. However if you enjoy this rather creamy, spicy modern wood-forward style then you'll probably have a blast. Quite clever wee concoctions these Seaweed things, I would say. 86 points - whiskyfun.com

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Oatcakes, vegetal peat, hot Ribena, assorted BBQ meats, molasses, clove-studded orange, and just a hint of chocolate mousse. Palate: Cinder toffee, cinnamon, peat still shining through, a slow build of red grape and jammy raisin, with some citrus lift. A subtle touch of singed hay later on. Finish Meaty malt returns, with warm oak in support. The red grape tannins continue and last on the finish. Overall: A top expression that shows what can happen when peat and sherry meet without clashing against each other.

    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $149. 99
    Bottle
    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Here’s a novel Benromach that marks a first for the distillery: Released in early 2025 in the UK and made using unpeated barley with a high enzyme content (otherwise employed for the production of Grain Whisky or in industrial brewing). A contrast to the usually robust and slightly smokey Benromach, this is instead a fresher style with fruity facets and sweet and savoury notes, including apple aromas, lots of citrus fruits, sweet pineapple and honeycomb as well as notes of jasmine and peppermint. Distilled in 2012 and aged for twelve years, it comes bottled at 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... A playful series by Benromach, featuring some relatively classic elements (more peat) and some more unusual ones, such as a comparison of kiln-dried and air-dried oak, or this high-enzyme malt, which is usually used to produce grain whisky. This is what is called high-DP malt with a lot of nitrogen (DP = diastatic power), and it’s used to convert the mash into fermentable sugars. Typically, about 10% is added to grains like maize or wheat. It’s worth noting that in Scotland, the use of additional enzymes in other forms is not allowed, though it’s permitted elsewhere. Let’s taste this high-DP malt, which should be sweeter and maybe even a little sugary… Colour: white wine. Nose: indeed, it’s very sweet, evoking bottled apple juice, an enormous pile of marshmallows, and touches of very vanilla-forward oak. It feels quite far removed from those slightly ‘dirty’, robust, and smoky Benromachs we love so much. Mouth: yes, it’s sweet, with plenty of apple again, marzipan, grapefruit, and above all a rather noisy oakiness. A standard Benromach would normally handle such situations brilliantly, but this baby Benromach (if I may) struggles a bit with the wood. It almost reminds one of a young Auchentoshan. Finish: medium length, with a hint of orange and perhaps papaya, then more apple juice and a lingering sensation of wood, almost like sawdust. Comments: not bad at all, really, but perhaps best suited for our friends who already have all the ‘normal’ Benromach expressions on their shelves. And remember, it’s only experimental. 82 points - whiskyfun.com

"...a delightful whisky and one of Aberfeldy’s best ever." - drinkhacker.com

Finishing this 15-year-old Aberfeldy in Semillon sweet white wine casks from Cadillac brings a balance of opulence and freshness to the whisky. Malt Master, Stephanie Macleod sourced the casks from a 40-hectare estate in the heart of Entre-deux-Mers, Gironde, just south of Bordeaux. Exuding notes of yellow fruits, florals, and a burst of citrus, seamlessly melding with Aberfeldy's signature soft, honeyed character, the wine influence makes the whisky brighter than the 12 year old, also giving it more body and a longer finish. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... A 15 year old single malt finished in French semillon “Cadillac” white wine casks. I presume Cadillac refers to the region of France near Bordeaux, known for its sweet wine production, but details are scarce. This is a delightful whisky and one of Aberfeldy’s best ever. The nose is beautiful and sweet, though there’s a slightly savory quality that evokes notes of dried flowers, toasted oak, and a gentle maritime edge. Lemon curd and tangerine are the most prominent fruit elements, but these are kept in check, at least for now. The palate is where this whisky really shines, as all of the above come together in beautiful fashion, really showcasing the citrus notes of lemon and orange, filtered through golden syrup, gentle sandalwood, and a layer of baking spices. Cohesive but complex, it’s bright and immersive, with a noteworthy layer of honey on the finish. Sauternes is made (in part) from semillon grapes, and I have to assume this whisky was finished in a similar type wine barrel. No complaints from me. This review was delayed because I broke my first sample bottle; very glad I stuck it out waiting for a replacement. - drinkhacker.com

It speaks of Casey's dedication to quality and consistency, his meticulous eye for detail across all aspects of whisky creation, and his overarching promise "to create a whisky that would one day stand alongside the great whiskies of the world." Bottled at 46% with no chill filtration.

"...a silky and dessert-filled experience that is unlike any other Redbreast I’ve encountered." - drinkhacker.com

Bridging the gap between the distillery's older and younger offerings, Redbreast 18 Year Old is a novel and welcome addition to the range. While ex-bourbon casks are included, this new expression relies mostly on first-fill oloroso casks, also sporting whiskeys aged in barrels that previously held cream sherry - a first for the brand. Says Master Blender, Ian McCabe, "By incorporating cream sherry casks sourced from the Antonio Páez Lobato cooperage, we’ve created a whiskey that boasts a rich profile of dark chocolate, blackcurrants and hazelnuts.” It contrasts against its nearest neighbour, the 15-year-old, which he describes as more savoury and herbaceous. Also notable is the addition of liquid aged in Ruby Port, a component that was until now used exclusively in the top-of-the-line 27-year-old and the even rarer Dream Cask. By all reports, Redbreast 18 year old is a cracker that ups the richness on others in the line up, making for a superb dessert whiskey. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The nose is luxuriously appealing, with milk chocolate, maraschino cherry, bramble, black currant, Nutella, baked citrus, apricot, mango, oak spices, toasted nuts, and cinnamon bark. Smooth and polished on the palate, the complex cask regime serves up flavors of milk chocolate, licorice, black grape, sultana, date, ginger root, currants, and clove. The finish serves up dried fruit and licorice, with hints of leather and coffee bean. 94 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...The nose is rich and expressive and clearly inspired by those newer cask types. Top notes of strawberry shortcake, sugared almonds, and black cherry are airy but still decadent, acquiring an almost creamy texture with time in the glass. The aroma is elevated further by undertones of vanilla bean and crème brulee with fresh berries. A hint of peppery pot still spice adds some energy to an otherwise silky and dessert-filled experience that is unlike any other Redbreast I’ve encountered. The palate follows a similar theme, lush and syrupy initially with cherry cordial and blackberry jam, veering almost too far into the dessert dram lane. Things course correct however on the midpalate with more traditional Redbreast notes of white pepper, breakfast cereal, banana pudding, and candy apple before finding remarkable harmony on a long, warm finish accented with ripe red berries, vanilla cream, and candied ginger. Truly impressive. Without having sampled the 27-year-old, I have to say this is my favorite Redbreast to date. - drinkhacker.com

Established relatively recently in 2002, Tellurian has quickly established itself as one of Heathcote’s leading producers. In addition to Shiraz, they have expanded their vineyard plantings to include a multitude of Rhone and Italian varieties. Heathcote’s warm days, cool nights and ancient Cambrian soils are ideally suited for the production of this Rhone styled blend which was matured for a period of 10 months in seasoned French oak barriques.

A bomb of flavour with juicy dark fruits exploding across the palate.

Deep dark red black core with a purple red tinged hue. Delightful raspberry, liquorice, ripe dark cherry and dark plum aromas jump out of the glass with wonderful intensity. Whiffs of incense and peppered dried herbs are also evident. The rich, mid weighted palate delivers a juicy explosion of spicy dark raspberry, liquorice, cherry and plum fruit. Infusions of incense, scorched earth and peppered dried herbs the undercard. Boasting ample freshness, outstanding concentration and velvet smooth tannins, it has a super long, power packed finish that’s bursting with succulence.

A rich, juicy, mid weighted Shiraz that’s long, elegant and peppery.

Introduced due to the relative scarcity of Best’s Thomson Family and Bin No. 0 Shiraz wines, the Bin No.1 Shiraz aims to provide an introduction to Great Western Shiraz style at a price point that gives the wine broader market access. Made predominantly from Best’s own vineyards it combines the varietals generosity with the region's cool climate elegance.

Deep midnight black colour with a dark red hue. Elevated dark plum and liquorice aromas mix with gently smoked vanillin cedar, earthy fennel and peppered dried herb notes. Rich, juicy and fleshy textured, the mid weighted palate is flooded with pepper infused dark plum and liquorice fruits which meld into a spicy vanillin cedar, scorched earth and fennel back drop. Polished fine grained yet structured tannins. Concludes long, elegant and peppery with an abundance of succulent fruit.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

This release is on song. Black pepper and peppercorn characters float through cherry and plum fruit flavour. It's lively, it has enough depth, it finishes well and it charms throughout. The fine-grained, savoury aspect of the tannin here is of particular note. If you like the Great Western style, you can buy this with confidence. Drink by 2033.

This is good. A cooler climatic expression that remains distinctly Australian, rather than playing the reductive hand of an ersatz Rhone. An exceptional nose of mace, clove, blue fruits, olive and briar, backed by a wave of beef bouillon and iodine-umami warmth. The tannins, a clatter across the middle, with a bow of dutiful acidity drawn to just the right degree of tension. Some scrubby menthol dries the finish ever so slightly. This said, this is a delicious wine of immense personality and soul. Drink or hold.

Uchu Umeshu is made with premium Oushukubai ume from Oita, and is aged for a minimum of three years. The extra ageing lends shimmering copper highlights to the amber toned hue of this rich and bold umeshu. Initial nosing sparks memories of Portello, cough lozenge, a hint of spearmint, before the subtle plum and peach notes show with air. Deep and viscous, the generous sweetness amplifies the flavours, as does the alcohol. Displaying a pleasing mix of red berry and plum flavours with more savoury vanilla, nougat, and tonka bean flavours, there's a lot to take in. One to serve over ice or with soda as a long drink. 20% Alc./Vol. Refrigerate after opening.

Drawn from a single vintage and matured in oak for 100 years before release, Seppeltsfield’s 1925 Para Vintage Tawny is part of an unbroken lineage unmatched in the world of fortified wine. Bottled direct from barrel at its centenary, it offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience a century of barrel age in its purest form.

    Other Reviews....
In 1925, New York overtook London to become the largest city in the world, Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler's influence was rising, F. Scott Fitzgerald released The Great Gatsby, the Jazz Age was in full swing, and this was tucked away in barrel. That never ceases to blow my mind. It's a singularity of aroma and flavour. Dried fruits in an aqueous solution, candied nuts, mahogany, molasses, marzipan, fancy cigar lounge, espresso liqueur, candied figs and prunes, wood spice and citrus rind. It's in constant movement; light filters in and out, highlighting certain characters, casting shadow on others, in an ever-moving state of change. It's kinetic and endlessly complex and there ain't nothing else like it in the world. It really is a national treasure. Drink 2025-2055.

Dave Brookes - James Halliday's Wine Companion

Only one puncheon of this wine was made in 1925, as with subsequent vintages, with the intention of releasing the wine after 100 years. It has gone almost motor-oil black with an intensely complex nose, showing layers of baking spices, dried fruit, chocolate, citrus peel and oil. The palate is so complex and thick, with surprisingly high and fresh acidity that comes from concentration in the barrel, giving toasted nuts, baking spices, espresso, cocoa and burnt butter. This is a truly rare and iconic wine with a great deal of complexity and poise. Exceptional. Drink or hold.

The 1925 Centennial Collection Para Port Vintage Tawny leads with dark chocolate and salted dates, sweet dark oak, resin, licorice and campfire. This is evocative and brings to mind embers that float across the field of vision of the wine. In the mouth, it is oily, smoky, rich and thick, with leather, autumn leaves, mahogany and even petrichor, a character I have not noted before. This is as intense and as black as I have ever seen it, and it moves even to black olive tapenade, roasted meat crust and clove, aniseed and arnica. It has length that feels never-ending, propelled either by sugar or age or the very shadows of time itself. I tasted from bottle number 062 (this bottle was later shared among wine lovers and friends and, in fact, was also shared in Burgundy with friends earlier in the year). 23.1% alcohol, sealed in 100-milliliter bottles of perfume glass.

Deep colour. Intense lifted ground coffee, praline, panforte aromas with smoky, liquorice, aniseed, cloves notes. Generously concentrated, dense and richly flavoured with fresh espresso, dark chocolate, orange rind, sandalwood cloves notes, fine supple textures, superb mid-palate volume/ viscosity and a persistent pure aniseed cut. Finishes smoky and long with apricot, panforte notes. A wonderful expression of Australian wine history and ambition. A living curio to share.

It’s the physicality of the wine you notice first. It’s as dark as sump oil at its core, easing out to a rich olive green at its rims. And then you attempt to swirl it. There are continents that move more rapidly than these old tawnies flow from the glass. They grip the surface of a glass like a potter’s glaze and no wine on Earth has more of its production sucked off an index finger than one of these. Get your nose near the glass and you topple through time. Walnuts soaked in brandy, star anise and cloves, cassia bark and panforte, coffee grounds and dried mandarin peel. The lingering scent of waxy oilskin. It doesn’t so much hit the palate as detonate upon it, pushing complex flavour to untouched corners and staying around longer than an adult child saving for a house deposit. One of the wine world’s greatest experiences.

Delicately flavoured with an energised feel to the elegant finish.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with highlights of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Nectarine, pear and lime scents are trailed by faint dried honey, biscuit and citrusy mineral notes. Light to mid weight and possessing a brisk feel, the palate is delicately flavoured with nectarine, pear and citrus fruits which meld into a subtle dried honey, biscuit and mineral backdrop. Fresh acidity lending an energised feel to the elegant finish.
