    Fifty percent fermented in old French barrels. Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Nosing offers up a mix of guava, grapefruit and citrus aromas followed by some wet stone and grassy notes. Zippy guava, grapefruit and mandarin flavours carry a tangy feel across the palate. Subtle grassy and flinty mineral elements lie underneath. Crisp acidity energising the tangy finish.

    The vines were planted from 1987 to 1993 on their own roots, unirrigated and biodynamically farmed. The fruit is handpicked, foot-stomped and soaked on skins for up to two days, then pressed to fifty/fifty neutral oak and tank. It goes through wild, ambient ferments, no adjustments, then it sits on lees, unsulfured, for three months prior to bottling.
    The 2022 Sauvignon Blanc leads with tatami mat and straw, torched lemongrass and brine. In the mouth, the wine is textural and concentrated—it has a cloth-y aspect, which is evident on the nose, but it sits very well in the mouth. This is savory, throaty and full and kept fresh through the finish by a splay of soft green leaf. There’s beeswax, lemon sherbet and a hint of juniper. 13% alcohol, sealed under Diam. Drink 2023-2032.

    Here’s a very different expression of NZ Sauvignon. It’s intense and powerful, gooseberry, passionfruit Crème Brûlée, jalapeño, grapefruit and a wild, well funky is maybe a vague term, but something of that nature. It’s spicy and saline, like a lime margarita, distinct sweet passionfruit and cumquat, with firm chalky texture and sizzling grapefruit acid bite, with a salty finish of mouth-watering intensity and fine length.     John Vickery was a legend of the Australian wine industry and is widely acknowledged as the old master of Riesling. His illustrious career spanned over 50 years at the likes of Leo Buring and Richmond Grove during which time he amassed more than 50 Trophies and over 400 gold medals. He was also responsible for the re-introduction of screw caps with his 1998 Richmond Grove Watervale Riesling.

    Although the great John Vickery has left us, his legacy lives on in the wines that bear his name. This is a cracker. A high-tensile, limey ride; a wine that is bone-dry, vivid and possesses all the velocity and verve that you expect. Pristine lime and green apple notes, subtle jasmine and Christmas lily with hints of crushed quartz and distant herbs, but it's all about that minerally cadence and precision. Super drinking. Drink by 2038.

    A very elegant red fruited Cabernet that shows plenty of finesse.

    Growing up in Healesville, a young Rob Hall did some summer work in the vineyards during the early to mid nineties before taking up full time work at Yarra Ridge then Punt Road. From 2002 to 2011 he was the winemaker at Mount Mary, it wasn’t until 2014 that he took the leap and began his own operation.
    A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 2% Malbec sourced from 3 different vineyards. Midnight black core with a dark red black tinged hue. Elevated red to black currant and mulberry aromas gently infused with violets and bay leaf are trailed by some dusty vanillin cedar, tobacco and subtle spicy black olive notes. The elegant mid weighted palate features red currant, red liquorice and mulberry fruits over cedary tobacco, subtle dusty earth, black olive and bay leaf elements. Youthful and fresh, it has a cool toned feel and fine grained tannins. Concludes long and finessed with a red fruited aftertaste.

    Matured in older French oak barriques for a period of 11 months with 39% whole bunch fruit included in the ferment. Totally opaque black dark purple colour with a dark purple red hue. Fragrant plum and liquorice scents gently infused with clove evolve out of the glass. Smoky vanillin cedar and peppered meat notes then follow. The bright, fleshy medium bodied palate features juicy plum and liquorice fruits over a spicy vanillin cedar, smoked meat and peppered dried herb back drop. Fresh acidity and polished tannins with a refined yet generously fruited, pepper laced conclusion.

    This is as good as any syrah yet from Vasse Felix. It is thoroughly delicious and appealing from the first take on the nose through to the soft and plush palate delivered with medium body. Interesting techniques have captured the best from the fruit. It was wild yeast fermented, with a portion of whole bunches and a little carbonic maceration to bring it all to life. Powerful cherry and spicy plum aromas lead to a medium-weight palate that is so exquisitely smooth and seamless, yet with a fine minerality to define and sustain. Outstanding.

    Such a delight to drink shiraz or syrah from Margaret River these days because it’s up there as an excellent drink, as this one attests. While heady aromatics of florals, pepper and spice lure you in, this is very much in a savoury spectrum. All black olives, ferrous and brown spices infusing some dark fruit. Mid-weighted with beautifully shaped tannins and fine acidity to close. Drink by 2033.

    Another in a series of 'Port Broadsides', this single cask, triple matured rum is no less than ten and a half years old. Blended at birth from Foursquare's pot and column stills and tropically aged in Barbados for eight years in ex-bourbon before being moved to Adelaide from some "Australian dry ageing." Once there it was filled into sixty year old Seppeltsfield ex-Tawny cask for eight months before being transferred a third time to a high-char ex-bourbon barrel for another twenty two months. Seppeltsfield makes one of the world's great dessert wines and here, the intense porty character is mellowed by the sweet soft ex-bourbon finish. Fat and buttery aromas and flavours extend to rich oak and ripe plums; A full bodied, viscous development of poached fruits laced with pepper and cinnamon are followed by dry molasses. Ends nicely balanced and deceptively long. Despite being rummy, this also leaves the impression of a port matured single malt. 52% Alc./Vol. 

    Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Lots of dark fruits – sultanas, berries, plumbs… plus vanilla and mixed peel. All draped with a wispy web of oak Palate: Big mouthfeel powered by a lovely all over medium spiced which then gives way to caramel a-plenty. The tawny cask is pretty identifiable here –with the stewed fruits and biscuit spices. There’s also a pastry note there too, so the accumulative effect is like a Spicy Fruit Roll biscuit in a glass! Finish: Nice and bold. Easily long enough to chat about it with your drinking buddy. Lots of stewed fruit, caramel, vanilla and a lingering spice that really warms.

    Other reviews... The latest project from Lark Distilling Co. is Kurio, a blended malt whisky, finished in 'cherry and sparkling wine seasoned casks.' Lark has a long history of finishing their whiskies in interesting ways, and it’s nice to see one of these in a 700ml format for a reasonable price. Tasmania produces both excellent cherries and sparkling wine, so there’s some synergy there, too. The nose on this whisky is cask-forward yet soft, with plenty of rich red fruitiness. There’s really good integration and no rough edges, although with cherries and sparkling wine the headlines on the label, a bit more brightness and fun might be nice. Sweet and easy drinking with a lot less oak on the palate than the nose would suggest, this is a really well-made and enjoyable whisky without being particularly complex.     The fruit came off the Bremerton vineyard in Langhorne Creek, with 72 hours on skins before pressing to neutral Burgundy barrels; lees stirring was frequent. This is a coolly-fruited expression of the grape, with lifted herbal notes of pea tendril and mint, along with sugar snaps, lime, green apple, cool stone fruit and a gravelly, mineral-like note. There’s an appealing Irpinia via Sancerre quality this vintage, but a little time in bottle is needed to swell out the flavour and texture. Drink by 2028.

    A brand created in Florida by two entrepreneurs, Brandon Lieb and Aleco Azqueta, and sponsored by Enrique Iglesias, the popular Spanish singer. Instead of being a distillery, Atlantico rum is produced by an independent bottler - Oliver & Oliver using the solera technique that includes rums up to ten years old. However the recipe begins with both molasses-based rums and rums made with fresh cane juice, separately aged for 2-3 years before blending and resting for another two years. The solera follows, and just prior to bottling a small amount of unaged Aguardiente is added for a finishing touch. 40% Alc./Vol.

    Atlantico Reserva offers a rich, buttery nose, with popcorn and a creamy toffee. In the background is a faint grassiness. The palate is drier and oaky, with a lighter take on those buttery notes, and an earthy, mineral layer.     The Standish Wine Company, founded in 1999 by sixth-generation Barossa vigneron Dan Standish, produces ultra-limited, single-vineyard Shiraz from dry-grown, old-vine sites across sub-regions like Greenock, Marananga, Krondorf, and Eden Valley. Using wild fermentation, whole-bunch inclusion, foot treading, basket pressing, and aging in French oak, Standish crafts powerful yet refined wines that express purity, intensity, and a strong sense of place. Highly sought-after and released in tiny quantities, each bottling captures the essence of its vineyard with precision and flair.

    By all reports, the 2023 vintage in the Barossa was shaped by a cold, wet winter and spring, followed by a cool, dry summer and a notably late harvest. It was a challenging season in the vineyard, yet early impressions suggest the resulting wines are remarkably poised and pure. Standish’s 2023 releases, in particular, are said to show extraordinary finesse and aromatic detail, with the usual power and depth intact. Careful adjustments to whole bunch use and shorter élevage have delivered wines that are intense yet fresh—an impressive result from a difficult year.

    The 2023 The Standish Shiraz is the most "Barossan" of all the Standish cuvées. It exudes earthy brick dust tannins and layers sumac and exotic spices with roasted game and sweet marrow. There are notes of black cherry, dried rose petals, sandalwood, hung deli meat and licorice, all of it strapped to rails of grounded tannin. It's chewy, substantial and of the earth, in its way. The fruit is sourced from the Laycock family vineyard in Greenock, as always, and it expresses the red clay and loam soils there in its splay of tannic fortitude and density. This is very impressive. It is fresh yet meaty/rocky—both attractive qualities in Shiraz/Syrah. 14.9% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2025 - 2043.

    The long, extended '23 vintage manifests itself beautifully in the glass with this release. It could be from nowhere else but the Barossa – the Laycock vineyard in Greenock to be precise. Fruit purity is a leitmotif of the Standish wines and, again, it's peaking the meter in '23, with deep black cherry and satsuma plum fruits at its core. There's fruit density and power here but finesse and detail are close at hand. Tendrils of exotic bunchy spice move through the wine, with glimpses of sandalwood, dried purple flowers, charcuterie, tapenade and the ferruginous stamp of place. What I love about this release is the tension between fruit weight, fine tannin heft and mineral cadence. There is precision and power and that is a very attractive thing indeed. Drink by 2046.

    The 2023 The Relic Shiraz-Viognier is texturally velvety and smooth; that may sound like a base observation to make, and perhaps it is, but the experience is overwhelmingly silky/ethereal this year. Apricot blossoms, sweet roasted bone marrow, hung deli meat, crushed rocks, licorice, anise and raspberry mingle in the glass, while the palate gives us these characters tenfold, bolstered and grounded by savory tannins. What more is there to say about this, other than that it is sensational? I find this to be an incredibly consistent wine year after year, with my scores rarely deviating too much from "excellent." This is among the very best Shiraz Viognier's in this country; it's a treasure. 14.9% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax. Drink 2025 - 2043.

    The Relic, 98.5/1.5% shiraz/viognier is sourced from the Hongell Family vineyard in Krondorf and immediately presents itself beautifully with dark and red plum, dark cherry and indeed, a stone fruit component that sits obliquely to the deeper fruit on display. A smaller percentage of whole bunch this year but an exotically spiced trail is still apparent in the wine, like fading footsteps in wet sand. There's a char siu meaty aspect in the mix, too, with dried meadow flowers and a real sense of place; the tannins are like powdered sand and there is a sapidness apparent in its cadence. There's only a handful of producers in the region that produce wines with this level of intricacy. It's like bonsai winemaking, capturing nature and all its harvest-borne detail with a sense of balance and proportion. Tremendous drinking. Drink by 2042.

    The 2023 The Schubert Theorem Shiraz is a gorgeous wine. It is silky, inky, pure, black as the ace of spades and long through the finish. The use of concrete egg in the fermentation/maturation stages lends the wine a sense of purity and finesse. It supports a core of crystalline fruit that is wrapped in earthy, grainy tannin and woven together with threads of saline acidity. It has rose petals, detail and delicacy, power and precision. Standish performs somewhat like a Burgundian producer—he works with one grape (I suppose two, if you count the small inclusion of Viognier in the Relic) to express different vineyard sites, soil types and elevations. There's no "declassified" fruit in these wines, no flow-on opportunities to other cuvées, just "make or break" viticulture and winemaking. The ancient terroir of the Barossa is writ large in these wines. It is striking. This 2023 Schubert, despite the cool and wet conditions, is a testament to Standish's clarity of vision. 14.9% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2025 - 2045.

    The '23 release of the Schubert Theorem is just gorgeous. It's kinetic. The purest of plum, black cherry and blueberry fruits stretch impossibly long on the palate, with impressive density and a real sense of grace to its travel. The edges are smooth and round here and there is a calmness as it glides across the palate, the tannins more in the powdery spectrum (and I'm sure this comes from the portion that spends its gestation in a concrete Nomblot egg). Bunch (50% or thereabouts) is bang on here, lending a golden ratio of spice, sinew and texture. But man, that pure rolling swell of fruit is the star; this is a wonderfully composed wine. Drink by 2040.

    Following on from the perfect 2022 release, I find myself opening this wine with a fair bit of excitement. I called Dan Standish one day in early May 2023 (I think to ask my questions about the wines I was tasting), and he was in the vineyard up in Eden Valley, picking the Lamella fruit for this wine. 2023 was a wet, cool season, so much so that the fruit for this cuvée was picked in May. Still, aromatically, the 2023 Lamella Shiraz leads with sumac and orange peel, fresh raspberry, black cherry, licorice, petrichor, wet asphalt and river stones. Sandalwood and rose petals follow through the finish. This is velvety and grainy, supple and pliable. The tannins are dry and silky, and they perfectly balance the intensity of sweet/spicy fruit in the mouth. This wine is a clear example of why you must back a producer over a vintage, because a good producer will triumph no matter the conditions. 14.9% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax. Drink 2025 - 2045.

    This year's Lamella, an Eden Valley wine, sees the majority of the shiraz sourced from the epic Stonegarden vineyard down near Springton, with a smaller proportion of fruit from Hutton Vale. Last year it was the other way around, but vintages are like that. The fruit, again at its core pure dark plum and blue fruits, has some redder shades in play, with plenty of exotic spice, meadow herbs, purple floral tones and that Eden Valley sage thing going on and the thinest wisp of spearmint rising from the depths. I love this wine's powdered granitic heft and mineral cadence, the wink of Campari and bunchy nuance done just right and its composed 'Eden Valleyness'. It's lovely. Drink by 2042.

Modest of weight, and from varieties that can be fulsome and gruff, this is elegant and food friendly, with a fine line of tannin and a fanning of cherry-scented fruitfulness marking the finish.     The 2020 Syrah is elegant and spicy—the whole-bunch component lends a spice and a skeleton (I always mean to say rachis, yet I censor myself to skeleton each time) and a structure that is most attractive. The wine is concentrated and silken, with a flow and ebb in the mouth that speaks volumes to the pedigree of fruit resource and clever handling in the winery. At this stage, the oak is still obvious in the glass, however having tasted the 2019 alongside, I can confirm that it recedes into the fruit like the ocean over sand with time. In my opinion, the best McLaren Vale Shirazes/Syrahs display a balance of sweet fruit and meat; it's a challenge to foster both parts of the grape in the bottle, but when it's done, it is a marvel. As this is. Drink 2022-2032.

    Clarendon and Seaview sourcing, harvested across staggered windows to impart textural detail and freshness. Fermented wild with gentle pumpovers. 50% bunches in the mix. Basket pressed to 500L French wood (55% new). The end result, as with all wines here, is one of consummate class and refinement. While the grenache is the leading light, this sits comfortably in 2nd place. Carnal spice, pepper grind, salami and blue to darker fruits are strung across bow of saline tannic tension, rolled into a firm gristly knot. Superlative grape tannins, mind you, extracted with a confident aplomb. The oak, a mere echo. This glimpses the finest crus of the northern Rhône through the lens of the Vale. Exciting. Exceptional. Rewarding. Drink by 2030.

    Bladnoch is part of a quartet of Lowlanders, the others being Glenkinchie, Auchentoshan and the legendary Rosebank. This single sherry butt bottling marks a departure from their NAS and red wine matured selections. Not quite multi-layered nor effusive, but not far off in its exquisite mingling of barley and spiced raisins on the nose, underscored by creamy cocoas. On the palate, the dried fruits are almost palpable and it's a bit like two whiskies in one: At cask strength, there's a chewy sensation of barley and aged fruit cake punctuated by ginger snaps and sweet spices. Add an ice cube or a splash of water and you have a more creamy, succulent serve of the same, further detailed with a vaguely nutty, leathery old school charm. The way the cinnamon and fruits cascade in a choreographed flurry really purrs. The length is impressive. The balance is impeccable as the profile continues to evolve with air contact. A whisky to keep you up at night.     A beautifully fleshed and concentrated Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay.

    The Clonale Chardonnay is sourced from Kooyong’s Tuerong and Balnarring vineyards and is matured in a mixture of French oak barriques and puncheons (12% new) for a period of 9 months. Brilliant very pale straw colour with gleaming green tinged edges and a watery hue. Aromas of white peach, pear and nectarine evolve out of the glass with ample intensity trailed by hints of biscuity oak, dried honey, citrusy nougat and spice. Fleshy white peach, nectarine and pear flavours are layered across the mid weighted palate with subtle notions of cashew, biscuity nougat, dried honey and spice lying underneath. Excellent concentration and textural volume finishing long and fresh with a gentle creamy feel.

    Back in 2019 Whiskey Hunt Australia did what few outside the US could — secure three Old Forester Single Barrels, handpicked from their legendary Louisville, Kentucky warehouses. Because the volumes were so small they only made it to a handful of retailers. Old Forester subsequently changed their international barrel pick policies and slammed the brakes on future single barrel selections. WHA only just managed to sneak this one through. So for the time being, it's the last of its kind, or to be more precise, the only single barrel officially bottled outside the US since 2021 (the distillery will instead be offering a 100 proof and an unfiltered, straight from the cask barrel strength option). We're told Old Forester use heat cycling in their rickhouses to maintain consistency, so if you enjoyed WHA's previous selections, they should be pretty close to what we’ve sampled here. Ripe peaches, soft rye and banana bread feature on the nose with a hints of bubble gum. For all of its high proof, this is remarkably easy-going with supple peach and light vanilla flavours framed by sweet cinnamon and peppery wood spices. The balance is so good, you don't really need water. It's uncomplicated, affable, heart warming Bourbon that's certainly above average, and with enough body, depth and oiliness to set on repeat without losing interest. Alternatively, add minimal ice for maximum easy-drinking. 204 bottles imported. Distilled from a mash bill of 72% Corn, 18% Rye and10% Malted Barley. 50% Alc./Vol. Collectable.

    Notes from the bottlers... That classic Old Forester sweet banana on the nose. Palate hits with peanut brittle, caramel, and a balanced mid-level sweetness.     Getting the botanical balance right in a 'classic' gin can be tricky. Too many ingredients and it can lose direction and lack style. Too few and the gin can taste one dimensional. Mobius Distlling have succeeded in creating a signature expression defined by juniper (like a London Dry should be) with a hint of citrus in reserve. The aroma is soft and pure, infused with notes of crushed pine buds exuding a peel-like freshness, later joined by hints of cardamom and white pepper. The taste is silky, creamy, smooth and lemony with bright juniper and warming peppers finished by a gentle peel tang.     Asili has created some of the greatest Barbaresco over the years and has a strong worldwide following. The main part of the vineyard is a protected bowl facing South/West, further away from the river and the valley influence with a warmer and less breezy microclimate during most of the summer. Usually quite closed in its youth it opens up slowly with impeccable complexity and style. A classic Barbaresco, and also one of the most distinctive vineyards of the region.

    The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Asili shows terrific balance and freshness thanks to cold evenings that lasted to the end of September. Asili is not far from Pora, and both sites share similar sandy soils. However, Asili is cut off from the warm air currents of the Tanaro River. This wine is more profound as a result, with soft tannins, a linear texture and well-defined mouthfeel. The 2020 vintage is more accessible overall, but you get the profound depth that Nebbiolo offers. This was the fifth of nine wines presented in the Riserva series.     The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is a slightly darker ruby color and is a bit firmer in character compared to Paje' and Mucagotta. The Asili has the most depth as well and draws you in on the nose with notes of black cherries, hints of sweet licorice, fresh leather. The palate, which is seamless and in line with the nose, also captures the polished, smooth, ripe tannins, and it’s long on the palate, with a very slowly floating finish. I’m impressed with the polish and evenness that both the Paje and the Asili are currently expressing. Drink this over the coming 20 years. Drink 2025-2045.

    From a not widely known vineyard, Montefico sits half way between Ovello and Montestefano and it is often compared to the latter because of their similar soil (high calcium) and their close proximity. Its warm - full south - exposure is mitigated by the cooler northern wind that occasionally funnels into the narrow valley between the villages of Barbaresco and Neive. First released in 1970, it produces classic Barbaresco wines that could be seen as austere when young but with incredible complexity behind the tannins.

    Two standouts from the 2020 vintage are Montefico and Asili. The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico comes from a site that is distant from the warm air that travels through the Tanaro River Valley and is closed within an amphitheater. This is a beautiful vineyard that looks toward the village of Neive and has active limestone soils. The wine is especially compact in texture and has a distinctly herbal note, with dried rosemary and lavender, that gives it a Mediterranean or botanical feel.     Montestefano is one of the vineyards with higher concentrations of calcium in the soil; this gives the wine a powerful tannic structure. The extra warmth of the South facing slope is responsible for the full body and meaty texture, resulting in a deep flavoured wine with ripe fruit and tannins. In a wetter season it is usually the last to be picked among the Barbaresco vineyards. This is probably the Barbaresco that reminds more of Barolo where flavours of tar and roses prevail. A truly wonderful Barbaresco, never too heavy on the palate with a classy finish that lingers without overwhelming the senses.

    Normally, Produttori del Barbaresco President Aldo Vacca puts Montefico, Rabajà, Muncagota and Montestefano at the end of his flight of Riservas. But in this year's presentation, he put the 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano fourth to last instead of last. This wine is usually the darkest and the most austere in the series. However, the 2020 does not live up to its usual flavor profile. The aromas are quite ripe, even overripe, with prune and raisin. The tannins are soft, leading to a succulent and chewy mouthfeel.     The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is one of the most elegant, polished wines in this range. Bright red-toned fruit, blood orange, spice, mint and cedar are beautifully lifted. The tannins are remarkably polished for a young, recently bottled Riserva. I admire its poise and elegance. This is an especially refined edition of the Montestefano. In 2020, the mix of vineyards is a bit younger than in the past, as one of the blocks of older vineyards was replanted and not used.     In this year and at this stage, the 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is not as full as the Montefico, which is the reverse of most years. A deep ruby/red color, it reveals notes of black raspberries, toasted spice, crushed flowers, and sweet earth. The palate is lush and inviting, with a refined and approachable feel. It has a lot more approachability at this stage than you’d expect, with velvety tannins and a long, floating finish.     The Muncagota vineyard looks South/East - facing cooler morning sunshine instead of the warmer afternoon sun. Because of this, it tends to show beautiful floral characteristics and often a specific mint character on the nose. Calcareous soil and a low level of sand gives to the wines of Muncagota extremely focused fruit and firm, stylish tannin. A perfect example of the elegant and intense qualities that make Barbaresco one of the most interesting and unique wines of the world.

    Coming from a southeast-facing exposure with a cooler climate, the 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is a bit lighter by comparison and has more lift aromatically as well, with notes of rosemary, mint, redcurrants, and dried earth. It has a more linear feel and captures a wonderful, refreshing energy, with finer but defined tannins and ripe citrus and apricot on the long finish.     Ovello is the northernmost vineyard in the village of Barbaresco and among the first 5 single-vineyards produced back in 1967. Soils are calcareous and rich in clay: these characterics combined with the cooler microclimate shape its exuberant fruit profile and its fuller body. Due to its powerful structure, some years of bottle ageing are usually required to balance that out.

    The Ovello vineyard has some northern exposures and generally represents a cooler growing site. You can expect intense fruit flavors and more prominent tannins as a result. The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello fits the bill. Vine growth starts much later and usually lasts longer to produce dark intensity and bold aromas in the wines. In the cold years, the tannins can be aggressive, but in the hot years like 2020, they show better balance. This wine offers ferrous notes of iron and rusty nail followed by cherry-driven sweetness.     Pajè is in a small bowl facing South/West and it lies between the village itself and the famous Asili vineyard. The vineyard is slightly lower in altitude and more open to the Tanaro River influence, resulting in a cooler microclimate. The soil is limestone with a high calcium level and as a result the wine combines elegance and complexity with intense tannins; it is never shy in acidity. Pajè appears sharper and brighter in its first years, with lovely youthful fruit and flowery notes, almost minty in cooler vintages and is particularly attractive after some ageing, when the wine still retains a fruitful and fresh palate.

    The Pajè vineyard faces the Tanaro River and is tucked at back of a narrow theater of vines. The site is often characterized by a floral note of rose and violet that comes thought nicely in the Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè. With those sweet floral notes comes an open-knit mouthfeel and a more immediate drinking style with soft, silky tannins.     Proximity to the Tanaro River creates a unique microclimate for the Pora, as well as a relative warmth in the early morning hours due to its proximity to the valley floor. The slightly higher soil fertility here gives to the wine a smoother character, with soft tannins and aromas that usually tend to open up in the early years of life. Pora is also one of the most historical vineyards in Barbaresco, as it was part of the property of Domizio Cavazza.

    Rabajà produces a quintessential Barbaresco, one of the most complete and balanced of the single vineyards. The meeting of these two different soils give Rabajà its incredible complexity. Bordering both Asili and Muncagota it combines the personality of those two great vineyards with and extra richness due to the South/West warm exposure.

    Not far from the Tanaro River lies Rio Sordo, in the southern part of the Barbaresco village. The light limestone soil with relatively low calcium content (compared to other areas of Barbaresco) produces wines where tannins are never dominant, instead they show a silky quality on the palate that makes them extremely attractive and seductive, never imposing and always elegant. Behind the smooth elegance however, lies a core of powerful structure and very well balanced tannins that give to the Rio Sordo its complexity and longevity.

    Founded in 2017 by Annabel Thomas, Nc’nean is located within the Drimnin Estate on a remote west Highland peninsula with spectacular views over Mull and Tobermory. The name is an abbreviation of 'Neachneohain', which translates as 'Queen of Spirits' from Gaelic. Like Ardnamurchan, an innovative and eco-friendly approach is at the heart of the distillery and its team. 2021 may well be one of the most significant in its early history: It was the year Nc'nean became the UK’s first distillery to gain Net Zero status with carbon dioxide emissions as close to zero as possible - twenty years ahead of the Scotch industry target. They're certified organic, powered by 100% renewable energy and recycle 99.97% of their waste. The whisky is also bottled in 100% recycled glass and is vegan friendly. Batches of around 5000 units are bottled at 46% and are both non chill-filtered and natural in colour.

[Batch 18 tasted / circa 2022] Right, bad luck, it's 2/3 ex-STRised red wine, now STR doesn't obligatorily make the whiskies winey, it often doesn't in my experience, so there is hope… Colour: straw. Nose: indeed, no obvious wine, but there are berries, probably rather elder, also peach syrup and orange blossom honey. Some Californian IPA. Well,  a style of beer that was to be found in California back in the days, but the whole world seems to be making this style today. Then a little sweet bread and some vanilla. Fine, soft, fruity, with also quite some hay. Mouth: very sweet, clearly 'flavoured'. Szechuan pepper, tangerine, oranges, hay wine, the usual cinnamon and ginger, some herbal teas (rooibos, peach leaves), vanilla and zests... Finish: medium, sweet, with more citrus, which always works, I think. Comments: clearly fruitier than the only earlier batch I've tried, which was #7.     Even though this is a NAS release, you can expect Glengyle's whisky-making team are refining their blending skills and introducing older material into each batch. So it makes sense that some tasters are describing this as one of the best, if not the best batch in the series to date. Drawn from 90% Bourbon casks with the remainder out of Sherry, complexity will be a strong point. The Kilkerran style we've come to know and love includes notes of key lime pie, toasted rye bread and peat smoke, toasted marshmallows and campfire embers with hints of vanilla and custard - and of course, that Campbeltown smokiness carrying through to the finish, along with a mineral note to round things off. Even after dilution, these natural strength expressions can remain beautifully fresh. If you're partial to the uber-peaty, invigorating coastal blast that comes with Longrow at its finest, this will be for you. In line with previous releases, Batch 11 weighs in at 57.9% Alc./Vol and comes bottled non-chill filtered.

    ...Both batch 9 (WF 86) and batch 10 (WF 85) were excellent, though perhaps ever so slightly immature, a tad on the rough side for my taste, but let’s admit it, we were nitpicking. Colour: straw. Nose: it’s the 16-year-old, only younger, livelier, and above all far more medicinal. With gallons of iodine tincture and mercurochrome, sea water and a splash of lemon balm infusion, one could almost use this as a balm, an anaesthetic or indeed as a repellent against mosquitoes and, more crucially, midges. Well, no guarantees there. We like it. With water: well now, it rounds out and softens completely, but also brings seaweed and, above all, plenty of sage and tarragon. Worth trying in a béarnaise sauce. Mouth (neat): this slaps you twice across the face, a proper one-two. Brimming with salt, ashes, camphor, iodine tincture, lime, oysters and smoked fish. With water: a more classical peater, though still immensely salty, with notes of machine oil and even penetrating oil. Could come in handy. Finish: very long, with salt, lemon and bitter almonds. Finally, most of the range is here, (mostly) differentiated by cask type, including The Original One, The Chinquapin One and now The Sherry One - the latter considered a high point for value. Some say it even beats Lagavulin 16 year old. Initially aged in American oak followed by PX and Oloroso Sherry puncheons for three years, the spirit is peated to 35 PPM. Walker employs a remarkably long 160-hour fermentation and uses mainland peat from St. Fergus (think Ardmore), imbuing a sweet and smoky profile. Production takes place for around six weeks per year. The whisky is bottled at 48% and is non-chill filtered, further enhancing the bang for your buck.

    Aged in a mix of oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry puncheons. The nose is dusty and dark with baking cocoa and fresh brewed coffee. A lift of citrus – blood orange and eventually sticky marmalade – arrives with time in the glass, but it never gets much beyond those dark roasted notes, all of which are accentuated by smoldering smoke and mild incense.
