2022 Oakridge 964 Winery Block Cabernet Sauvignon

A wonderfully refined expression of Yarra Valley Cabernet.

Matured for 15 months in French oak barrels. Midnight black heart with a vibrant dark red hue. The nose is a wonderfully refined expression of Yarra Valley Cabernet displaying red to black currant and mulberry scents over cedary tobacco, earth and subtle spicy bay leaf like notes. Very elegant and finessed the mid weighted palate is decorated with generous red currant and mulberry fruits. Cedary tobacco, dried herb, dusty earth and spice characters line the back half. Mildly chalky yet fine grained tannins with a long, sophisticated finish that carries an impressive red fruited freshness.
Drink over the next 10-12 years.

Fruit from a 1996-planted vineyard. Four weeks' post-fermentation maceration, matured in French barriques (35% new) for 15 months. A saturated crimson purple. Always an interesting contrast between this and the original cabernet, which comes from older vines and a cooler site. A complete wine with aromas of blackcurrants, dark plum, cedar and subtle florals. Excellent concentration on the palate, which is wrapped around youthful, firm and long-chained tannins. A very long life ahead is ensured. Super wine. Drink by 2036.

This is a pretty staggering wine. You’re not going to find this flavour profile in an Australian wine all that often. It’s built on blackcurrant and boysenberry but the flavour load of pencils and dark chocolate and smoked herbs and mint-in-pan-juices merges to quite mesmerising effect. It’s silken and well sustained and structured, but this flavour profile, wow, it’s something. Oak is part of the magic but the distinction of the fruit is the thing. Drink 2026-2039+
