Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire 18 Year Old Peated Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $169.99$139. 99Bottle$1679.88 DozenABV: 40%A noteworthy price for a peater with this kind of age statement. It's another batch from what some have nicknamed "the ampersand clan" (aka Atom Brands). As a senior member of the Seaweed & Aeons family, this heavily peated Highlander spent 18 years maturing with a portion of the whisky believed to have come out of sherry casks. If Ardmore is your style, this should tick all the right boxes. 40% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... A secret single malt from the Highlands, though it does feel a touch peculiar presenting this sort of thing at 40% vol. Ex-Seagram/Pernod Ricard stock, perhaps? Ardmore, maybe? Colour: light gold. Nose: well yes, it’s charming, fresh yet peaty, with notes of bacon, lemon zest, engine oil and tar, and above all a good deal of toasted sesame oil. Mouth: it holds its own at 40%, smoky, bordering on sooty, yet indeed there’s not the faintest whiff of the sea, not even the shyest of periwinkles. Thoroughbred peated Highlands, in short. Finish: surprisingly long, with smoked tea and lemon... Comments: no, this is both lovely and delicious, it’s just that I can’t quite locate the ‘seaweed’ element, but no complaints otherwise. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

2021 Brand's Laira Blockers Cabernet SauvignonCoonawarra, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$18. 99Bottle$227.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 6 Years (2025-2031)ABV: 14%Closure: StelvinEstablished by Captain Stentiford in 1893 the Laira Vineyards was purchased by Eric Brand and his wife Nancy in 1950. Throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s they sold their fruit to larger wineries before releasing the first Brand's Laira wine in 1966. Eric and his sons continued to produce wine at Brand’s Laira until 1994 when the McWilliam’s family purchased the property. Casella wines now own the vineyard.
Rich, beautifully fleshed and refined, this is a prime example of Coonawarra Cabernet.
Outstanding colour saturation featuring an impenetrable inky black core and a near equally deep dark red black hue. Streaming out of the glass are delightful blackcurrant, mulberry and vanillin cedar aromas which are complimented by some tobacco, subtle earthy black olive and bay leaf notes. Rich blackcurrant and mulberry fruits flow effortlessly across the mid weighted palate with subtle dark chocolate, vanillin cedar, earthy tobacco and spicy bay leaf accents lending further nuance. Seamless tannin integration concluding long and refined.

Sleek and glossy textured this is a gorgeous marriage of opulence and finesse.
Midnight black heart with a dark purple black tinged hue. From three sandy sites, two planted in the '70s and one the late '90s; 14% whole bunch in the final blend; matured in French barrels (12% new) and a 2600L foudre. This is the most aromatic and lifted of the triad of single-site syrah in this range, which is unsurprising given the sandy soils. It doesn’t lack for depth and intensity though, the fruits simply more red, blurring a little into black, the structure tautly tensioned, the finale pleasingly brisk. Sour plum and cherry, tart blackberry, clove and pepper, struck rock, iron and black tea. It’s a lovely expression, just starting to suggest some tertiary perfume, which promises to build appealingly. It’s very good. Drink by 2035.

Marcus Ellis – James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionAn impressive nose of blackberries, dried kelp, violets and licorice. The structure is a taut coil, like a spring contracting and expanding across gritty, detailed tannins melded to saline acidity. Iodine reduction, nicely handled. Full-weighted but detailed and classy. Drinkable now, but best from 2027. Screw cap.

St Bridget's Kirk Solera Batch #3 Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)SCOTLAND$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 48.5%This limited edition is created using Lady of the Glen's own method of blending malt whiskies. Drawing on different distilleries and styles, each batch is small, bespoke and distinct from the last; each blended, married and bottled from the company's custom built solera system made up of an ex-Fino sherry quarter cask and two ex-Oloroso quarter casks. Synonymous with the sherry and port industries, a solera involves multiple 'connected' barrels. As whisky is drawn from the last barrel the first barrel is topped up and the whiskies improve as they flow down the line. This is the 3rd batch under the St.Bridget's Kirk label and Hannah says they're now seeing real benefit from the process. In this example there's a rewarding balance of malt and sherry with any signs of youth now well into the background. Some tasters have found wisps of smoke. Instead we found the emphasis was on orange spice cake and cream tea biscuits. With an ice cube melting away, the emphasis shifts towards coffee cake and chocolate, also luxing up the mouthfeel. Very well integrated and much better than an everyday drinker. You'll find it hard to stop at one. 218 bottles. 48.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... Taste: Oloroso-led arrival. Toffees and caramels. Treacle. Walnuts and winter spices. Black pepper – very peppery at first, though mellows over time. Medium to full-bodied. Velvety texture. Marmalade and honey. Oak – becomes more noticeably woody the longer it sits on the palate. Smoky finish lingers. Water reduces the intensity of the pepper and makes for a more rounded dram. It also seemed to unleash more of the smoke – with an earthier, more pungent peaty note coming through. Thought: Satisfying and fully flavoured. Not overly smoky but neither does the sherry completely dominate, although it certainly leads the way. With time and water the balance seemed to improve and make for a more interesting dram, at least for me – those who like that big sherry hit might prefer it without water. Tasting it on a crisp, Autumn day was a winner – the dram itself seems very Autumnal – like fallen leaves, distant coal fires and sultana cake. - ascotonscotch.com
Notes from the bottlers... Old leather, orange peel, cola cubes, toasted marshmallow and smoked kippers.

2013 Dalgety Glen Spey Small Batch 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 50.2%Considered by several whisky writers as "one of the most 'obscure' distilleries in Scotland", Glen Spey would have continued to slip under the radar of malt chasers, had it not been for a handful of favorable releases. Formerly known as the "Mill of Rothes", it was built in 1878 by James Stuart & Co (who later went on to buy the Macallan distillery). Always intended as a filler for blends, the particularity of the distillery style resides in its production method. As with its neighbour, Glen Grant, pot stills are equipped with "purifiers", redirecting some vapour to reflux within the still to produce a less feinty and lighter spirit.
For this bottling, Gregor Hannah has selected a pair ex-port casks. One of the casks is a refill ex-ruby cask but the other is barrique which has been seasoned with a premium ’Super Porto’ wine from the Douro River Valley. Married for a suitable time, these casks balance out the distillate's fruit and spice notes with the secondary maturaiton leaving notes of red berry compote, spiced biscuits, cloves, cinnamon, Turkish delight and black forrest gateau. 681 bottles produced. 50.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

2011 Dalgety Glen Moray Small Batch 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$134. 99Bottle$1619.88 DozenABV: 52.5%Another fruit salad Glen Moray, in the best possible way, no doubt partly due to the the fact that refill hogsheads have been used. These were combined and married in a butt for a couple of months before bottling. Hannah considers Glen Moray one of the most underrated whiskeys on the market, an opinion backed up by this simply delicious malt. Textural and mouth watering with fruit confectionary and vanilla flavours that are borderline lush, fine tannins and acids relieve what could have fallen flat in the wrong cask type. Nicely done. 683 bottles at 52.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... A range from Hannah Whisky Merchants. A simple refill hogshead such as this one should be perfect. Colour: white wine. Nose: one is reminded of icing sugar, lime zest, broken tree branches, cactus, green apple... All of this, we like. With water: damp chalk and raw wool stand out, along with a bit of porridge, grist, damp peat with also a hint of eucalyptus... Nothing to fault, it's really perfect, of great purity. Mouth (neat): very citrusy and on green apple, extremely lively, with a bit of green pepper and a hint of fruit candy, like lemon and grapefruit. Perfect tension, very refreshing. With water: and there you have it, the texture thickens, there's limoncello, pink pepper, crème de menthe, anise, and a tiny touch of chilli. Finish: long, fresh, lemony, and minty. Comments: when people speak of desert island drams they mention old Lagavulins or Laphroaigs from the 1960s. In reality, it's this kind of Glen Moray that would be more appropriate. But in a double-magnum. 87 points - whiskyfun.com
Notes from the bottlers... Director Gregor Hannah and Brand Ambassador Paul Mckendrick carefully hand select casks from their extensive portfolio to create this unique and harmonious small batch single malt whisky. A classic example, fully matured in a pair of refill hogsheads for 12 years allowing the soft and gentle, vanilla and honeyed nature of this make to shine through. Tasting revealed - pecan, honey, caramel wafer, white grape, black pepper and walnut.

Attractive touches of dry triple sec lift the finish, the aftertaste flattening with caramel and milk chocolate in tow. 261 bottles at 58.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Notes from the bottlers... A light bodied distillate and a fairly modern style of Speyside whisky where the vast majority of output is destined for blends, we rescued this cask from mediocrity. A single-vineyard wine planted with MV6 and Abel clones in the late '90s; 20% whole bunches. A bright crimson. Elegant and restrained with aromas of red cherry, rose petals and spices such as Sichuan pepper and star anise together with a little new-oak pencil-shaving scents. The palate is similarly elegant and fine boned and I like the way this keeps building as it sits in the glass. The tannins are superfine and persistent. The most reticent, perhaps, of the five single-vineyard wines but a wine that will no doubt age superbly. Drink by 2032.

A new release in the Max & Me quiver, which is sourced from a 'very famous' 150-plus-year-old vineyard east of Springton. I'm pretty sure Phil is referring to the Stonegarden vineyard, which many of the Barossa's top producers use as a source of amazing fruit. Vivid and zesty with impressively pure plum and red berry fruits, a plume of gingery spice and hints of cola, citrus blossom and red licorice. Great velocity and chalky tannin grip all add up to a great little first run for this new wine. Very nice! Drink by 2030.

There’s texture and flavour here but it’s the drive through the finish that really elevates the pulse. This chardonnay really does power on. A serious wine that will delight patient purists, but which also showcases the new levels of purity and precision that this estate has been attaining since completion of the new winery, the 2024 Léoville Barton is a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Unwinding in the glass with notes of cassis, plums, pencil shavings and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and impressively concentrated, with a taut but nicely integrated profile, concluding with a pure, penetrating finish.

William Kelley - Wine AdvocateThe 2024 Léoville Barton is a very beautiful wine. Black cherry, plum, lavender, new leather, graphite, crushed rocks, mocha and spice all meld together. 2024 Chateau Figeac Pre-Arrival OfferSaint Emilion, Bordeaux, FRANCE$320. 00Bottle$3840.00 DozenClosure: CorkPositively ancient in wine terms, Chateau Figeac has a history of grape growing going back to Roman times. Once a large estate of 200 hectares, various divisions over the years, most notably selling the parcel that would become Chateau Cheval Blanc, the estate now covers 37 hectares and is planted to 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc, and 30% Merlot. The high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon is rare on the Right Bank, and owes to the soil being a mainly fine gravel base, and the resultant wine requires at least mid-term cellaring to soften.
Other Reviews....
The 2024 Figeac is a lovely classic, wafting from the glass with aromas of blackcurrants, minty berries, licorice and pencil shavings, deftly framed by new oak. Medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, with good depth at the core, powdery tannins and a suave, seamless profile, it's a blend of 33% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Franc and 39% Cabernet Sauvignon that attained 12.7% alcohol. Figeac was one of those estates that took the risk of waiting to harvest, rejecting just over 20% of the crop in the sorting process to produce a compelling wine despite the challenging conditions.
93-95 points
William Kelley - Wine AdvocateSilky and aromatic, with velvety tannins, the 2024 Figeac is sublime. Floral and savory aromatics meld into a core of blue/purplish fruit, spice, licorice, lavender and menthol. All the elements are so well balanced. The blend is 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Franc, with 8% press wines. Not surprisingly, the 2024 is a very Cabernet-driven Figeac. Production is 60,000 bottles, or 50% of normal, because of low yields and further selection in the cellar. Tasted two times. Drink 2034-2054.

Antonio Galloni - VinousBased on 33% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Franc, and 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2024 Château Figeac reveals a classic Figeac nose of ripe blue fruits, sappy tobacco, flowers, and graphite. Medium to full-bodied, it has a fabulous, seamless mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, beautiful balance, and a great finish. To have this level of quality in a vintage like 2024 is mind-blowing, and this is one of the top handful of wines in the vintage.

Jeb DunnuckGorgeous fragrance on the nose, dark chocolate, milk chocolate and black cherries, floral roses and iris - you can really smell the Cabernet Franc. Lovely intensity of fruit with such freshness from the start. A burst of acidity and zingy red fruit which then transforms into a soft and creamy mid palate before turning more mineral and crisp on the finish. Really a lovely journey from start to end. Well proportioned, not a light wine. This has a touch of chew with cooling minty liquorice aspects. It’s elegant, leaning into the vintage in terms of density, but wow there is such delicacy and detail here. I love it because it’s so relaxed and so charming and full of fruit. The energy and buzz is just exceptional. I could drink this all day! 8% press wine. 3.66pH. Drink 2032 - 2046.

Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire & Sherry Casks 10 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLANDReduced from $119.99$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 40%Other reviews... An undisclosed single malt from Islay, 25% of which was finished 1st fill oloroso sherry octaves. The name is very 'Atom', while, conversely, I believe 1992 is on the phone asking for its bottling strength back. Colour: gold. Nose: but what's this? An OB Laphroaig 10yo from circa 2002? This very particular aroma of iodine, hessian, seawater and cough medicines. Extremely easy and rather nicely attuned to a very specific aroma of 'peat smoke' in the most classical sense. I find it disconcertingly charming. Mouth: it is probably the bottling strength, but this really does feel like drinking a decent batch of OB Laphroaig 10. There's a few citrus fruits, soft peat smoke and rather a lot of wet rocks and medical embrocations. I have to say, it's quite a lot of fun. Finish: medium, perhaps a tad short, but still nicely medicinal, on iodine, light TCP notes and good old peat smoke. Comments: There's a lot about this that, on paper, I probably shouldn't enjoy because it goes against the modern geek code - whatever that is. But this is actually a rather clever and very good, easy quaffing wee Islay dram. Someone at Beam should go check the Laph 10yo vatting tank for syphons though… either that or Atom have developed cloning technology. If that's the case, do they take requests? Whiskies are sourced from an undisclosed Islay distillery with 25% taken from first-fill Oloroso sherry casks. All are bottled non chill filtered. This is the entry level version. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Nose: seaweed and iodine indeed, with a bonfire on a beach and earthy peat. Charcoal and black pepper. All this is mellowed by generous toffee and red apple sweetness, salted peanuts and some medicinal herbs. Actually this is more complex than I expected. Mouth: sweet peat. Now the sherry is more prominent. Peaches with burnt edges, hints of caramel sweets and vanilla pastry. Plum jam. Ashes and light chocolate. Overall rather modest peat. Never grabbing you by the throat, but a rather rich style nonetheless. Hints of aniseed later on. Finish: medium length, on chocolate, honeyed cinnamon pastry and hints of dried seaweed. Warming smoke in the end. While bottled at a low ABV, it offers the classic Islay markers in a nice way. Really affordable and offering a lot of ampersands for the money. Available from Master of Malt for instance. There is also a cask strength version if you prefer something a little stronger, or an 18 year old version. Some of them also add some Speyside whisky to the mix. - whiskynotes.be

This is understood to be the cask strength version of the Seaweed & Aeons 10 year old Sherry Cask edition, featuring the same smoky Islay single malt, though instead of just 25% of it being finished in sherry casks, the entirety of the whisky was. Around 1200 units are offered per batch, this one landing at 54.9% Alc./Vol. and bottled without chill filtration.
Other reviews... [Batch 2 tasted] This one is full sherry finished. Colour: orangey amber. Nose: a notable gear shift, this is much creamier and displays a more velvety smokiness. Resinous hardwoods, smoked teas, verbena, eucalyptus, tea tree oil and smoked meats. The sherry sits behind the peat and doesn't feel too jarring, it's rather more about wood spice and peat smoke together I would say. With water: softer spice tones, coal dust, bonfire embers and this impression of medicinal herbs. Mouth: a similarly easy arrival, all on soft wood spices, smoked teas, sweet peat smoke, natural tars, wood resins, putty and aniseed. More impressions of herbal cough syrups and things like hessian and wormwood. I like it a lot but it strays very close to being a little too wood-dominant for me. With water: not too sure with water, I think it loses a little definition and the alignment between peat and wood goes slightly awry. There's still plenty of sooty and peaty 'oomph' about it though. Finish: rather long, all menthol tobaccos, bitter herbal extracts, spices, liquorice and tar. Comments: this one veers about quite a lot. Lots of emphatic, peaty pleasures to be had, but for me the wood is a tad too much here. However if you enjoy this rather creamy, spicy modern wood-forward style then you'll probably have a blast. Quite clever wee concoctions these Seaweed things, I would say. 86 points - whiskyfun.com
Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Oatcakes, vegetal peat, hot Ribena, assorted BBQ meats, molasses, clove-studded orange, and just a hint of chocolate mousse. Palate: Cinder toffee, cinnamon, peat still shining through, a slow build of red grape and jammy raisin, with some citrus lift. A subtle touch of singed hay later on. Finish Meaty malt returns, with warm oak in support. The red grape tannins continue and last on the finish. Overall: A top expression that shows what can happen when peat and sherry meet without clashing against each other.

2023 Lowestoft Estate ChardonnayTasmania, AUSTRALIA$67. 99Bottle$815.88 DozenABV: 13%Closure: StelvinLowestoft is one of Tasmania’s most exciting producers, home to some of the region’s oldest vines, planted in 1986 just outside Hobart. Since Kiwi-born Liam McElhinney took the reins in 2020, the estate’s reputation has soared—most notably with La Maison Pinot Noir, which took out the prestigious Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy in 2023. With mature vines, precision winemaking and growing acclaim, Lowestoft is fast becoming a producer to watch in Tasmanian wine.
Sourced from 78% Tasman Peninsula and 22% East Coast fruit, the 2023 Chardonnay was hand-picked, chilled, and whole-bunch pressed to seasoned 300L French oak. Wild fermented with solids, the wine was handled in two parts—half sulphured post-ferment, half stirred on lees without SO₂ for three months—before 9 months’ maturation and blending. Taut and mealy expect notes of ripe nectarine, grapefruit zest, cashew and flint, this is a Chardonnay of tension, texture, and precision.

Coal River Valley chardonnay, whole-bunch pressed into seasoned French oak (300L) for wild ferment before maturing for nine months in oak prior to blending and bottling. Pale straw, with vibrant aromas of grapefruit, white peach and nectarine cut with hints of struck-match complexity, spiced oatmeal, almond paste and riverstone. There's a lot going on here. It's like an orchestra; you can hear it as a whole but are able to delineate and pick out individual instruments, politely golf (orchestra?) clapping as you go, marvelling at the tautly stretched fruit canvas, umami-rich acid line and overall composition and drive. A cracker. Drink 2024-2034.

Pinot noir sourced from the Woodlands vineyard in the Coal River Valley. Bright cherry fruit studded with spice, pomegranate, pressed flowers, cranberry, mountain herbs and subtle undergrowth at the core. There is a pleasing depth to the dark cherry and wild strawberry fruits with fine powdery tannins, a bright mineral-laden line and a composed, savoury swish of the tail on the exit. Drink 2023-2030.
