2023 Samuel Billaud Montmains Chablis Premier Cru

While the origins of this domaine date back to Charles-Louis-Noel Billaud in 1815, it's the current generation winemaker Samuel Billaud that has made waves with the exceptional quality of his wines produced since the creation of this project in 2009. Following the sale of the family business Domaine Billaud-Simon to Faiveley in 2014, Samuel received further prized parcels of land and now makes wines from five of the grand cru vineyards, and five of the top premier cru vineyards. The wines are vinified in a mixture of stainless steel and large old wood barrels, the latter mainly for the premier and grand cru wines.

The 2023 Chablis 1er Cru Montmains reveals attractive aromas of pear, grapefruit, orange peel and oyster shell, leading into a medium- to full-bodied, ample and incisive palate animated by bright acids and concluding with a distinctly saline finish. Drink 2026-2039.

The 2023 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru comes from the middle of the valley, 35-year-old vines. It has a slightly chalky bouquet, touches of yellow flowers and fresh pear. The palate is fresh on the entry, and very linear in style (especially compared to the previous vintage), leading to a lemongrass-tinged finish that lingers nicely in the mouth. Definitely this is worth seeking out. Drink 2026-2033.

In stainless steel, to bottle in September. The vines are located at the start of the valley. Pale in colour, strict on the nose, pleasingly stony though the clay also gives some bottom to the wine and a minor reduction. Long finish on citrus, including grapefruit. Drink from 2027-2032.
