"...a fantastic little rum that merits more contemplation than you might expect." - drinkhacker.com

Distilled in 2013 from a harvest of the same year, this expression marries three types of distillate before maturation instead of afterwards. Master blender Nelson Hernandez selected unaged rums distilled from molasses and cane honey via three still types (column, pot and hybrid), and barreled the blend in a mix of x-bourbon and whisky casks. It was then aged for 10 years, experiencing an average loss of 6–8% angels’ share annually (around 60% of their overall volume to evaporation!) The final release yielded 18,000 bottles globally. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The nose is fairly deep, kicking off with a fragrant, perfumed wood note—not quite oak, but something similar—that is joined by ripe fruits, banana bread, and vanilla extract. The fruitiness carries over to the palate, with mango and cherry, plus leather, tobacco, oak, and vanilla. The finish adds spices, clove, and ground cinnamon. If you’re already familiar with Diplomático’s core range of 2–12 year old Reserva Exclusiva, then this newcomer will be a departure. The Reserva has a very conspicuous clove note on the nose, which is absent in the single vintage. Vanilla reigns supreme on the Reserva’s palate, but it plays more of a background role in Single Vintage, undercut by pleasant oak and fruit notes. 2013 Single Vintage has a drier profile overall, but it offers pleasant depth of flavor. We recommend sipping it neat. - whiskyadvocate.com

...Pretty on the nose, featuring notes of honey, torched orange peel, and green banana before more traditional notes of vanilla and caramel take over. Spice notes eventually dominate: cloves and cola, particularly. On the palate, the rum is immediately a bit tougher and rougher than the classic and very sweet Reserva Exclusiva, making me wonder how much less sugar dosage is used here. That’s a good thing, because it allows more flavor to come through beyond brown sugar and vanilla. (I love those flavors, of course, but great rum is a lot more than sweetness.) Big notes of banana bread, Christmas cake, and dark molasses all dominate, infused throughout with those spice notes present on the nose. Again, cloves and cola are punchy, while ample, toasty oak notes perk up on the finish. Some red fruit, coffee, and baked apple notes complete a holiday vibe on the lengthy, warming finish. All told it’s a fantastic little rum that merits more contemplation than you might expect. - drinkhacker.com

    $5580.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

    Other Reviews....
Occupying a stylistic middle ground between the incisiveness of the 2013 and the fleshier textures of the 2012, Taittinger’s 2014 Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne—disgorged in July 2024 with a dosage of nine grams per liter—has turned out beautifully. It offers aromas of orange peel, peach, pear and brioche mingled with hazelnut and burnt buttered toast. On the palate, it is full-bodied, ample and textural, with a layered yet crisp core of fruit, considerable tension and a long, chalky finish. Harmonious and racy-fresh though it is, this is a marginally richer rendition than the 2013 tasted alongside it, yet both promise excellent longevity and will make for fascinating comparative tastings in the years to come. Drink 2026-2054.

Kristaps Karklins - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2014 Comtes de Champagne is pristine. In this tasting, it comes across as a mini-2008, similar in its linear personality, with just a touch more mid-palate creaminess. Readers will find a Comtes that plays in the realm of tension and energy. Citrus confit, white flowers, chalk, mint and chamomile are all finely sketched. Light tropical overtones grace the finish. What an absolute delight. The 2014 can be enjoyed now or cellared. Dosage is 9 grams per liter. Drink 2026-2044.

Apricots, hazelnuts, lemons, white flowers, sliced almonds and hints of licorice on the nose. It's creamy and layered, with soft, rounded bubbles that spread across the palate. Lovely balance of breadth, ripeness and freshness, with delicious wildflower honey and nut notes lingering. 100% grand cru chardonnay from Avize, Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Cramant and Chouilly. Drink or hold.

Taittinger's Comtes de Champagne shines in 2014. It's a vintage that offered crisp yet open and beautifully defined wines from the grand cru Chardonnays of the Côte des Blancs. This is still primary and youthful, its zesty roasted grapefruit, sweet clementine and pineapple flavours meet juicy white peach and gentle ageing flavours of demerara sugar and toasted brioche. It's a little less intense and dynamic than 2013 but equally fine in its restrained, racy energy. With even a short time on cork the classic toasty Comtes richness will start to emerge. Drink 2026-2040.

Blended and finished at the Tessendier Cognac House in France, Saison's slightly older 'Gold' edition sees multi-cask aging in x-bourbon and French oak making for a versatile, lighter bodied Caribbean style that's not overly aggressive. Suitable for beginners and mixoligists. 37.5% Alc./Vol.

Drumshanbo Tawny Port Cask Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey (700ml)
    IRELAND
    $159. 99
    Bottle
    $1919.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Maturation in Tawny Port casks distinguishes this from Drumshanbo's standard bourbon/sherry release. Triple distilled and based on a unique mash bill including malted barley, unmalted barley and Irish Barra oats, the full-term fortified ageing contributes intense red fruit and caramelized sugar notes, giving it a creamy texture, alongside flavours of cherries, plums, toffee, baking spices (cinnamon/clove) and citrus, balanced by classic pot still spice for a smooth finish. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... With a single pot still recipe that includes barley, malt, and Irish barra oats, this was fully matured in tawny port casks. Red fruits and spice abound on the nose, with red apple, ripe Victoria plum, fresh cherry, florals, ruby grapefruit, and underlying pot still spiciness. Fresh and polished on the palate, with straightforward flavors of red apple, cherry, punchy spices, and cherry soda. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com

The Port dominates the nose with big, sweet notes of raisin, cocktail cherry, and candy apple. The pot still character is more muted compared to the Marsala cask release with only hints of spice and grain darting in and out of the aroma. On the palate, top notes of strawberry jam and cherry lozenges are a bit syrupy and oversweet and the mouthfeel is a touch thin, but a healthy kick of pot still spice on the midpalate helps to temper some of the sweetness, harmonizing somewhat into notes of sugared plums and Linzer cookies on a medium-length finish. An after-dinner dram to be sure. - drinkhacker.com

While there’s texture here, this is a tight, leaner rendition; still pleasing, though. Aromas and flavours are light on with some nashi and barely ripe Packham pears, lemon curd and lemon meringue. There’s a slip of texture and cleansing acidity; best not to chill this down too much. This was conceived as a contemporary Vale restaurant red, some 13 vintages ago. Today, the blend has benefitted from new estate-planted clones of tempranillo. As is the way here, this saw an array of nuanced ferments, 17 in total. The grenache came from Clarendon. The refined tension at modest weight is key, with those cola and sarsaparilla notes of the tempranillo (74%) reflected in a savoury key, and the grenache (26%) opening the nose and palate, contributing dried cherry cranberry and orange peel – or that’s how it feels. Aromatic, lighter medium-weighted, savoury and delicious. Drink by 2030.

    Saison Pale Rum (700ml)
    Caribbean,
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

'Saison Pale' marries molasses-based rums and column-distilled sugarcane-based distillates from Barbados, Trinidad and Jamaica. The components are blended by Cognac expert, Jerome Tessendier in France. There, the rum is allowed to round off for three months in French oak barrels, adding a smooth hint of oak to the floral, fruity, and elegantly spicy spirit before bottling without added sugar. The result is a light tropical style with a little French-finesse. Enjoyable neat, though perhaps intended less as a sipper, more of a mixer that will add vibrancy to cocktails. 40% Alc./Vol.

The size of the cask in question has limited the out-turn of this release to 176 bottles. The wood has imparted a perfectly balanced sweet-yellow fruit character to the fresh and slightly botanical Teaninich distillate. 52.7% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the bottlers... NOSE: Peaches, nectarine, lemon zest, mint tea. PALATE: Mango, honey, dried apricots, yellow sultanas, white pepper and

Violet Hour is a blend of fruit from 10 blocks in Bondar’s Rayner vineyard, one of McLaren Vale’s better known vineyards. Each block has a different aspect, and soils range from deep sand with ironstone rocks to clay over limestone. The Shiraz vines are some of the oldest on the property, reaching 70 years in some blocks. Whole bunch and destemmed fruit is used, and the juice spends varying times on skins, depending on the block. The wine sees only seasoned oak, usually for a period of around 10 months.

A sumptuous, medium bodied McLaren Vale Shiraz that features rich, plush blue to black fruits.

Impenetrable inky black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. The wildly fragrant nose features dark plum, liquorice and ripe blueberry scents intermixed with dried herbs, fennel, scorched earth and pepper. Rich, plush liquorice, dark plum and black cherry fruits decorate the medium bodied palate with ripe blueberry, dried herb, earth and peppered fennel elements also chiming in to add further interest. Velvety yet structural tannins with a long, polished finish that makes for sumptuous drinking.

Andre Bondar and Selina Kelly approach McLaren Vale shiraz like young renovators who’ve just inherited an old mansion from an eccentric old aunt. What was once dark has had the light let in, abundant artifacts and ornate over-stuffing replaced with cleaner lines and more open space. It’s still the beautiful place it always was, but is now more appealing to a contemporary market. If you’ve always loved McLaren Vale shiraz, you’ll still be happy here, and if you didn’t think it was for you, you’ll be surprised by how quickly you feel at home.

100% cabernet sauvignon, Houghton clone. Matured for 18 months in French oak (36% new). You know when you spot Houghton clone from Wilyabrup that you're in for a succulent, red-fruited time. It's a combination of the clone and the dirt, and it's good. While the oak is initially prominent now, the fruit behind it is precisely as expected – singing. This may need a little more time for the oak to recede, however the fruit is bang-on, and the tannins are a highlight. Gorgeous. Drink by 2036.

Sparkling Shiraz is a unique Australian wine that’s synonymous with the Great Western region having been in production since the early 1900’s. The base wine for this cuvee is left on yeast lees in bottle for 36 months or more and disgorged in the traditional method. The dosage liqueur contains a small quantity of very old Best’s Liqueur Muscat.

Sparkling Shiraz is an unique Australian wine and few producers do it as well as Best’s.

Pours with exuberantly frothy mousse that fills the glass then slowly fades in to a deep dark red black coloured base that’s threaded by a steady stream of fine bubbles. Heady aromas of dark plum, liquorice and dark chocolate waft through the nostrils complimented by some vanillin spice, blackberry and subtle earthy mocha notes. Rich, engulfing dark plum, blackberry, liquorice and dark chocolate flavours carry an opulent, creamy feel across the palate with earthy mocha and vanilla spice accents sitting in the background. I believe this is only recently bottled, though I’m used to that. There’s something of a cru Beaujolais character to this wine, which is likely a strange thing to say, though that’s kind of how it presents. 5% new oak. 5% whole bunch.
Juicy, red fruits, spice, potpourri, roast peanuts. It’s medium-bodied, plenty of energy here, crisp cool acidity, light emery board tannin, a pop to cherry and red fruits, some cola nut and dried herb, a slight smokiness, with a spicy orange zest finish of excellent length. Very good drinking here. Likely better with a little more time in bottle. Drink 2026-2032.

The value belies the quality as there’s always a lot of detail to this range, yet it's so approachable. This has the right combo of varietal flavours – the cherries, pips and spice, the squeeze of blood orange and zest, the touch of chinotto, too. Medium bodied, with supple tannins and refreshing acidity. A wine you want to drink on a cold day while staying toasty in front of a fire. Drink by 2035.

2021 was a stellar vintage in the Eden Valley and there is plenty to like here. Ripe black plum and blackberry fruits, deeply etched with dark spices, sage, bay leaf, licorice, dark chocolate, pan juices and oaken spice. Quite structured with plenty of tannin chew and gristle; acidity sleek and driving and a lingering exit studded with spiced black fruits. Drink by 2038.

The cherry-infused palate is beautifully supple and perfectly ripe. Fruit is the undeniable hero, with seamless integration between the two varieties. Pinot makes up 30% of the blend, with the MV6 clone sourced from the Travertine Vineyard. 'Best's clone' shiraz is sourced from the Wills Hill Vineyard and displays natural elegance and intensity. The blend spends three months in oak, of which 40% is new, which sweetens and fills out the mid-palate, followed by three months in tank to preserve the primary fruit. Drink by 2030.

A gorgeously shaped Pinot Grigio that shows impressive intensity.

Friuli, in the far northeast of Italy, has a reputation for making the country's best white wines. Winemaker Justin Bubb explains, "The key to this region is the difference in diurnal temperature. In the growing season the days are very warm but the nights freezing. This allows a nice, long ripening and wonderful aromatics for the white wines".
From a 30-year-old site in San Martino al Tagliamento, near Pordenone, the vineyard sits at the base of the Alps and the soils are a mix of clay and alpine gravel from alluvial deposits.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Lifted pear and red apple skin aromas drift through the nostrils followed by some lime, faint dried honey and wet stone notes. Delicious pear, red apple and lime fruits are delivered with impressive intensity over a delicate dried honey and stony mineral back drop. Gorgeously shaped it has brisk acidity and a long dry finish that carries a slippery textural feel.

Kilchoman Machir Bay 2025 Edition Cask Strength Limited Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $164. 99
    Bottle
    $1979.88 Dozen
    ABV: 58.1%

The first Machir Bay cask strength release in over three years!

For those who've been hanging for a new cask strength Machir Bay, the wait is over. Bottled at a natural strength, it employs the same cask regime as the standard Machir Bay, capturing the wonderfully intense, vibrant zesty character the distillery is known for. On the nose, there's baked citrus, brine, white pepper and savoury peat galore, soaked into a sponge of vanilla oak. Whiffs of liquorice and menthol continue the fresh Islay theme. Creamy and intense on entry; completely mouth filling with early vanillas and an oily, off-dry ashiness coming to the fore. Menthol cigarettes, spent cigars... the finish finds a touch of grassiness and a citric acidity, with a complexing minerality competing with the sweet oak. Very fine and emphatically maritime malt, as you would expect. Think Bruichladdich meets cask strength Lagavulin - and probably one of the best values from Islay in its category. 58.1% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Notes from the producers... Machir Bay Cask Strength shows a deep golden colour, richer than the standard expression. The nose is bold and smoky, with sweet vanilla and caramel from the bourbon barrels, layered with citrus and tropical fruit, and hints of floral and mineral complexity. On the palate, it is full-bodied and warming, with creamy malt sweetness balancing maritime peat smoke, fresh and candied citrus, toffee, and subtle spice. The finish is long and lingering, with smoke gradually giving way to vanilla, toasted coconut, and a soft saline note. This dram is perfect for those seeking a powerful and prolonged Machir Bay experience.

2024 Sadie Family Citrusdal Mountain Skurfberg Chenin Blanc
    Western Cape, SOUTH AFRICA
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Cork

This extraordinary 100% Chenin Blanc hails from South Africa's northernmost wine region, the arid Citrusdal Mountain WO, on the west bank of the Olifants River. Specifically, the fruit is drawn from three parcels of 90-year-old, ungrafted bush vines on the decomposed, red sandstone slopes of the Skurfberg (which means 'rigid mountain'). Planted between 1940 and 1955, these are three immaculately farmed vineyards that have never been treated with herbicide or chemical fertilizers.

Fruit from each vineyard is vinified separately, basket-pressed, then transferred to old casks for natural fermentation. Following 12 months on lees, the wine is blended, then returned to the same casks for a further six months before being bottled directly from foudre.

    Other Reviews....
Papayas, stones, apricots, chopped apples, hazelnuts and some rosemary on the nose. It’s compact and creamy, with a full body but lots of stony minerality, plus phenolic grip and texture. Salty and intense at the end. Chenin blanc planted on weathered limestone with high iron content. Drink or hold.

The 2024 Skurfberg comes from the north, drier areas of the Cape, the first picked of Sadie's Chenin Blancs. This has a lovely bouquet with beeswax, sea spray and light white linen scents, a touch of seaweed. 2024 Sadie Family Swartland Kokerboom Semillon
    Swartland, SOUTH AFRICA
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 14%
    Closure: Cork

Following the Citrusdal Valley north towards Clanwilliam, we come to Sadie's highest vineyard, Kokerboom. Named for the striking aloe plants that grow near the vines, Kokerboom was planted on Table Mountain sandstone in the 1930's and is now home to one of Swartland's few remaining plantings of old-vine Semillon, a variety that at one time, made up 80% of South Africa's national plantings. Owned and managed by Henk Laing, Sadie notes that, "This is one of the most pristine old vineyards we know. No herbicides or artificial fertilizers have been used on it, and it has been perfectly pruned over the years. The downside is that it is small and low-yielding."

Kokerboom is a field blend of Semillon Blanc and Semillon Gris, the latter contributing between 20-30% depending on the year. Both Semillons are picked and pressed together and raised in large-format oak. Thanks to its solar exposition, the Semillon ripens extremely well here and has little to none of the tart herbaceousness so often associated with this grape. Instead, the Semillon from this site is known for its ripe lime character with more citrus and chamomile flavours and a waxy texture.

    Other Reviews....
Sliced pears, beeswax, grapefruit, wild herbs and juniper berries on the nose of this full-bodied, creamy white. Lots of weight and layering, with a waxy yet fresh feel. Spicy, long finish. The 2024 Kokerboom is a blend of Sémillon Blanc and Gris. Mellow on the nose, this is the most timid of Sadie's '24s at the moment, with very light wet wool and earthy aromas. The palate is very spicy on the entry, with a touch of ginger, linear and minimalist for Sémillon, with a bright, sapid, slightly fiery finish. Very fine. Drink 2027-2047.

2024 Sadie Family Swartland Pofadder Cinsault
    Swartland, SOUTH AFRICA
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Cork

In the 1920's Cinsault was the most planted black grape in South Africa. However, as one of the fickler varieties to work with, it suffered a fall from grace post WW2. It's only very recently with growers such as Eben Sadie and Chris Alheit leading the charge, the Pinot Noir of Swartland has been reborn. The results are revelatory. This is a variety that is being planted more and more by some top growers in the south of France. Wines like this show you why.

Pofadder is a pure Cinsault, cropped from a parcel on the Kasteelberg Mountain (west of Malmesbury) planted in 1973. Here the soils are composed of slate and decomposed shale. Pofadder is Afrikaans for a puff adder, a type of snake that is known in these parts, and indeed, a puff adder claimed the life of a vineyard worker in the 1940s: hence the name.

Sadie is a champion for old vine Cinsault on the cape, but he concedes that this is the vineyard, and the wine, which needs the most care. Controlling yields, sorting bunches and berries and then protection from oxidation in the cellar are all vital. Eighty percent whole bunches were placed in an old wooden, open-top fermenter, with one or two gentle foot stomps each day to release enough juice to keep the fermentation ticking over. After a month on skins the grapes were then transferred to a tiny basket-press and pressed directly to an old wooden cask for aging. The resulting wine is a gloriously textured yet vibrant ode to both variety and region.

    Other Reviews....
This pulls you in with aromas of peppercorns, citrus rind, rosemary, red cherries and red currants. It’s supremely fresh and silky, with a medium body and fine, seamless tannins. Elegant, but with tension and texture. Cinsault. Drink or hold.

    Claire Nesbitt - JamesSuckling.com

"The 2024 Pofadder is the most fruit forward that I have seen it," remarked Eben Sadie. "A lot of guys pick early to make it Burgundian in style, but this site gives full ripeness at 13% alcohol. The slate soil is very important for this as the vines struggle a bit here." It has a crystalline bouquet with mineral-laden forward red fruit and bergamot that bursts from the glass without inhibition. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, gentle grip and powdery texture with a mineral/stony finish that lends a slight brittleness. Great transparency to this Pofadder. Excellent. 2024 Sadie Family Swartland Treinspoor Tinta Barroca
    Swartland, SOUTH AFRICA
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Cork

Tinta Barocca arrived in South Africa from the Duero and has found a home in the Western Cape. Historically Tinta Barocca has always played a prominent role in Swartland's red blends, though interest in the variety, particularly from the old, dry-grown vineyards, has really spiked in recent years. This vineyard, planted in 1974 and located next to the old railway line (treinspoor), lies four kilometres west of Malmesbury on decomposed granite and sandstone. Sadie notes that while the very fragile, thin skin of Tinta Barocca is prone to sunburn, the old bush vines keep the bunches sheltered from the intense Swartland sun. Sadie likens his Treinspoor to a sort of stylistic cross between Northern Rhone Syrah (blackberry/currant fruit, plushness, nettles) and Piemontese Nebbiolo, (spice, florals, acidity and tannins). That pretty much nails it. It's certainly a wine of great energy and drive, with its dark and inky core surrounded by layers of pretty, red fruit and florals all wrapped in fine, powdery tannins. Fermented in concrete and raised for 12 months in foudre, it's an outstanding, idiosyncratic red of great beauty and character.

    Other Reviews....
This spicy, brooding yet pure wine has aromas of licorice, violets, blackberries, cranberries, graphite and hints of fennel. It’s medium- to full-bodied, firm and focused, with fantastic spicy undertones. Lots of structure. Tight and firm finish. Tinta barroca from 50-year-old vines. Try after 2026.
    96 points
    Claire Nesbitt - JamesSuckling.com

The 2024 Treinspoor is pure Tinta Barocca that Sadie said he loves the most, though he had to drop a lot of fruit in this vintage due to the dryness, around 35%. This blooms on the nose with sensual red berry fruit, rooibos, Earl Grey and light minerally scents, beautifully defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with a sappy opening, impressive density and weight, very pure and perhaps the most sensual of Sadie's OVS this vintage. Just a light tang of cracked black pepper on the finish. Excellent. Drink 2026-2046.

2024 Sadie Family Piekenierskloof Soldaat Grenache
    Western Cape, SOUTH AFRICA
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Cork

Soldaat is 100% Grenache from a parcel of 55-year-old vines in the highland Piekenierskloof region, just shy of the Swartland catchment, going north to Citrusdal. The vineyard got its name from the foot soldiers (piekeniers) who once used this area as a lookout. Hence the name Soldaat (Soldier). Sadie's easterly facing parcel sits around 780 meters, one of the Cape's highest elevations, and the soil is decomposed granite. The vines here are unirrigated, and still on their own rootstock. Eben notes that The Piekenierskloof Pass has firmly positioned itself as the leading location for Cape Grenache, with the area capable of giving vibrant, perfumed wines with lifted red fruit and spice as well as an earthy minerality (reminding us of the elegant, perfumed Garnachas from Gredos and San Martín de Valdeiglesias, in the Madrid highlands). Regardless, this is something very different to the heavy, alcoholic wines that are so often a theme with Grenache. Whole-bunch except for 15% to get the fermentation going, Soldaat is fermented (and raised) entirely in concrete.

    Other Reviews....
Sliced strawberries, pomegranates, rose hips, orange rind and wet stones on the nose of this supremely elegant, fragrant red. Sour cherries, too. It’s medium-bodied, very fresh and silky, with very fine tannins, seamless but present. Persistent and salty at the end. Great expression of grenache. Fermented and aged in concrete. Drink or hold.

The 2024 Soldaat is Sadie's Grenache cuvée with slightly higher alcohol compared to previous vintages, fermented and aged in concrete. That comes across on the nose, which is more generous, a little higher-toned than the '23. Plush red cherries and cranberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a tart entry, red cherries, pomegranate and crushed strawberry with gentle grip on the finish. A lovely Soldaat that will give 12 to 15 years' drinking pleasure. ABV: 14%
    Closure: Cork

Planted in 2019, Sadie's young co-planted vineyard sits on the granite soils of the western slope of the Paardeberg. Due to its aspect, it soaks up most of the afternoon sun, hence the name Sonvang, which means "sun catch." Planted with Alicante Bouschet, Agiorgitiko, Pontac, Bastardo do Castillo, Trincadera, Tinta Barocca, Lleudonder Pelut, Grenache Noir, Pinotage, Cinsault, Counoise and Carignan, the terroir allows the grapes to ripen early whilst retaining fresh acidity. At this point, each variety is picked and vinified separately before blending. In the future, with pruning dynamics and varied viticulture, Sadie aims to create a true field blend. The maiden 2024 vintage yielded just 22 hl/ha and fermented with 30% whole bunches.

    Other Reviews....
This intriguing, aromatic red has aromas of smoked paprika, black currants, bell peppers, licorice, rosemary and Sichuan peppercorns. Some prickly pear, too. It’s vibrant, exotic and crunchy, medium- to full-bodied, with tight and fine tannins. Wild, spicy and powerful, but refined. A field blend of 12 co-planted varietals from a vineyard planted in 2019. The maiden 2024 Sonvang, a field blend of varieties in Eben Sadie's nursery, certainly has one of the more exotic and out-there aromatics with scents of red fruit, hickory, struck flint… something almost volcanic about this. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant dark berry fruit, touches of white pepper, Provençal herbs and black truffle. Wonderfully balanced, granular in texture, insistent grip on the finish with a persistent finish, this is an outstanding debut. Drink 2027-2048.

The fourth release of this old-vine chenin, and it’s another exceptional one. Half crushed and half whole-bunch pressed fruit, with fermentation in concrete and large oak, then maturation in old puncheons. An orchard stroll, crossing the seasons, with fragrant blossoms as well as crisply ripe fruit. Fresh, waxy red apples and green pear, yellow and lemon-skinned citrus, along with poached apple, cumquat, hazelnut and preserved lemon characters. It is rare to see such complexity in youth. Aromatically dense, it builds an impressive, beautifully revealing whole, even within the shortest time in glass. Fashioned upon a central core of red apple, spices and ripe stone fruits, pear and a touch of marzipan, it is immediately engaging in both texture and a fresh liveliness. Delicious now, it can only build further upon the complexity shown. Already, there are emerging honey notes to be enjoyed together with spice, marzipan and ginger adding an additional layer to the base notes of citrus, apple and pear. An extraordinary wine, which heralds a renaissance for the grape in Australia. Drink 2025-2036.

There's great purity and tension with a touch of polish. Aromas of melon, yellow apples, lanolin, sea spray and flint. The palate is mid-weighted with a lovely texture balanced by mineral-driven acidity. A very refined example of chenin that’s been crafted for both early drinking and aging. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

This wine is made in the pursuit of both texture and flavour and the outcome is exactly that, texture and fruit weight, set within a context of both freshness and taut control. It’s pretty damn impressive. Pepper, metal, brine, cooked apple, preserved citrus and nut-like characters all make positive contributions here, as do whispers of Vietnamese mint. This wine is excellent now, and will build with extra time in the bottle. Drink 2027-2032+

Juicy yet youthfully inky with a bright, slightly rustic finish.

A blend of Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache and Syrah. Deep midnight black core with a dark purple red hue. Fragrant blackberry and liquorice aromas intermix with inky earth and provincial herb notes. Juicy yet youthfully inky in its feel, blackberry, liquorice and dark cherry fruits are layered across a scorched earth and peppered dried herb back drop. Fresh acidity and chewy tannins with a bright, slightly rustic finish.

Bunnahabhain 21 Year Old Cask Strength 2025 Release Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $550. 00
    Bottle
    $6600.00 Dozen
    ABV: 53.1%

Over the past five years, Bunnahabhain have released an annual cask strength bottling in both 12 and 21 year old age statements. These special releases offer fans their own "unfiltered warehouse moment", capturing the magic of tasting straight from the cask in the distillery's coastal warehouses. Sweet sherry can quickly overpower whisky, however there are, of course, some excellent PX finishes, especially when not from first-fill casks. This should be one. Like last year's edition, it spent most of its life aging in x-Oloroso casks before undergoing a final 21 months in Pedro Ximénez casks. The result is everything you’d come to expect from Bunnahabhain with creamy berries, roasted nuts and gentle sea spray at the forefront, complemented by a complex yet sweet syrupy layer from the sweet sherry casks, that coats the palate with lingering bursts of figs and molasses. 53.1% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

A crisp, refreshing Champagne that has a dry, finely sculptured finish.

A well formed mousse slowly dissipates to reveal a pale straw coloured base that has pale gold tinged edges and a fine nimble bead. Pear, yeast lees and red apple skin aromas drift from the glass followed by some oily baked bread notes. Refreshing pear and citrus fruits drive the mouth watering palate over a back drop of yeast lees, baked bread and a chalky minerality. Crisp acidity with a dry, finely sculptured finish.

    ABV: 40%

Made using 10 to 25 year old eaux-de-vie from a range of appellations, this is another superb Cognac from the Tessendier distillery. A linear, restrained style, taut and focussed featuring dried apricots, figs and nectarine in a succulent mid palate, framed by fine, cedary tannins and hints of citrus blossom. The purity and elegance are notable. For a comparison style think XOs from Pasquet, Delamain or Camus Borderies. The presentation matches the liquid inside - sleek, contemporary and very classy. 40% Alc./Vol. Tasted from a 20ml sample.

Other reviews... Look for a deep amber hue and bold, sweet aromas suggesting dried fig and baked pear. The palate is equally bold, folding cassis, dried cherry, and port notes into dusty cocoa and walnut. It finishes long with a hint of clove. 96 points - wineenthusiast.com

Notes from the producers... This cognac stands out with its soft intensity and rich aromatic tapestry. It unveils scents of dried fruits and gingerbread, gracefully accompanied by hints of blond tobacco and liquorice, creating a delightful finish on the palate. It is savored as a delightful digestif along side blue cheese.

Billecart-Salmon Le Rose is considered the reference point for non vintage Rose Champagne. It consistently outshines other houses in terms of both quality and value for money. Previously labelled as simply Brut Rose Champagne, the blend has been fine tuned and now consists of 45% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier. Aging takes place on lees for 36 months and the blend includes 50% reserve wines (an increase of 10% on it’s former incarnation) sourced across 15 different vintages. It is also slightly drier with the dosage reduced down from 9 g/l to 4.7 g/l

Your go-to Rose Champagne for this festive season.

Pours with a frothy mousse that slowly subsides into a salmon pink coloured base that’s finely threaded by a steady stream of bubbles. Buoyant aromatics of strawberry, yeast lees and citrus fill the nostrils followed by hints of baked bread and chalky mineral notes. A chorus of mouth watering yeast lees, strawberry and white peach flavours are sculptured by vivid acidity which lends a racy feel. Baked bread, delicate almond, ginger and mineral elements sit in the background. The lingering dry, chalk tinged finish providing plenty of stimulation for the senses.

Pours with an exuberant mousse that holds well over a pale gold base that has pale gold tinged edges and a very persistent fine bead. Rich aromatics of baked bread, citrus, yeast lees and dried honey are followed by some brioche and roasted almond notes. Full flavoured yet sculptured with a dry chalky finish, mouth filling baked bread, yeast lees and roasted almond characters combine with citrus, brioche and oyster shell like elements. "Very elegant, no overpowering sherry. The subtle, soft Tomintoul profile is noticable." - whiskybase.com

A cracking value sherry matured malt from a relatively obscure distillery known for a softer style distillate and promoting itself as “The Gentle Dram". Some tasters at whiskybase who were lucky enough to try this against the classic Glenrothes 30YO (in the same shipment) found this to be their preference, especially after about 30-40 minutes in the glass. "Elegance" is the recurring descriptor. Unfortunately, we couldn't secure enough to satisfy more than a handful of customers. Three decades in a first-fill Oloroso Sherry butt yielded 565 bottles at natural strength. 50.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Very elegant, no overpowering sherry. The subtle, soft Tomintoul profile is noticable. Notes of old leather, wood polish, candied oranges, soy sauce. Some dried red fruit sweetness. Finish is warming. And everything is subtle and elegant. Very good this. - whiskybase.com

A fruity, floral and honeyed distillate that's a favourite at LOTG due to its versatility and compatibility with many cask types. This one was originally matured in a hogshead then 'finished' for six long years in a first fill Amontillado sherry cask sourced from Josafer cooperage. It needs time to blow off the intense bittersweet cocoa nose and sharp citrus edge, giving way to poached Summer fruits. Settles into a gargantuan malt-drive. A tongue blasting malt-fest. Few will have tasted Glen Elgin as bold and feisty as this. You'll need water to get past the over-the-top experience uncut, which turns the profile to orange-filled milk chocolates. 236 bottles. 57.3% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Telling a palo cortado from an amontillado in a finishing is nothing short of wizardry, and we’ll freely admit we are quite unable to do so. Colour: full gold. Nose: earth, peppers and oranges in various guises. Will that do for you? With water: notes of Swiss cheese fondue, kirsch and white wine. I promise. Mouth (neat): the oranges save the world, at least here, yet it remains a touch… improbable. Think bitter orange liqueur with pepper and ginger. With water: ah, that’s better, though still a tad uncertain (Gruyère, pepper, kirsch and glue, really?) Finish: very long, very peppery, fairly bitter. Notes of glue and Seville orange. Comments: another highly acrobatic Glen Elgin, let us be frank, but really very, very decent. 80 points - whiskyfun.com

Notes from the bottlers... stewed strawberries, nutmeg and chocolate coffee beans.
