London Dry

Applied to Gin, the term "London" originally signified Gin produced in or near the city, where most English Gin has traditionally been distilled. Today the term is adopted by Gin producers the world over, and no longer indicates any specific geographical association. Generally speaking, they are juniper-forward, drier styled gins with a range of supporting botanicals.

    Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Named after the Forty-spotted Pardalote, the island's rarest bird, and produced at the Lark Distillery, this gin matches traditional gin botanicals with Tasmanian pepperberry. Tasted from a 20ml sample, the nose suggests lemon meringue and lime peel over light juniper and hints at white pepper. It's reflected in a pure, uncomplicated, creamy-textured profile with an attractive lemon / lime accented finish. Use this as an all-purpose mixer or in casual G&Ts. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... This gin is pretty floral and slightly perfumed, think lavender and violet, followed by a whiff of sweet orange, berries and juniper. The palate is spicy, with soft juniper notes. Overall it's pretty clean, but it would've benefited from a little more balance. 78 points - distiller.com

    Lobo Djinn Gin (500ml)
    Adelaide Hills, South Australia, AUSTRALIA
    $72. 99
    Bottle
    $875.88 Dozen
    ABV: 41.6%
A gin from the Adelaide Hills employing quince instead of the more typical citrus, backed up by a pure juniper note and supported by a blend of botanicals with spices and some other "ethereal notes". The juniper character stands up in classic cocktails, however the house cidermaker's favourite is a simple gimlett with straight lime juice.

Tasting note: [20ml sample] Creamy yet fresh aromas of green pear, pine buds, earthy juniper, liquorice root and emerging anise. Great balance and length with a superb rush of anise(?)-laced juniper through the middle stages. Ends cool-mint fresh, delicately peppery with subtle pine, quince and aniseed lingering. Delicious. 41.6% Alc./Vol.

    Luxardo London Dry Gin (700ml)
    ITALY
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Made from a grain based spirit, Luxardo's formula employs nine botanicals in a 24 hour infusion. These include juniper, coriander seed, orange peel, liquorice and lemon peel amongst others. The aroma yields fresh, peppery/woody/root-like, juniper forward notes, muted and leaner in later passes with the emphasis on dried herb / potpourri as well as nuances of cinnamon bark and lemon thyme. Medium -bodied delivery features orris root, coriander seed and pepper over background juniper and late anise. Finishes brisk, lively, warming. Narrows out with tongue nipping spices and light piney juniper. The dry, linear character of this gin will lend itself to Martinis. 43% Alc./Vol.

    ITALY
    $71. 99
    Bottle
    $863.88 Dozen
    ABV: 41%
While the other Malfy Gins showcase varieties of Italian citrus (lemon, grapefruit and blood orange), 'Originale' offers a more traditional gin profile. The keynote here is wild Italian juniper along with five other botanicals combined with Monviso mountain water extracted at the village of Crissolo. Established in 1906, the family run distillery is in Moncalieri, just outside the city of Torino - an area famed for its fine wines and spirits. Carlo, his wife Piera and their children Rita and Valter run the show. Beppe Ronco and Denis Muni are the Master Distillers. Their label even has its own 'quality control' stamp: "G.Q.D.I." stands for 'Gin di QUALITÀ DISTILLATO in Italia' - a guarantee of quality and origin. 41% Alc./Vol.
Martin Miller's Westbourne Strength Gin (700ml)
    London, UNITED KINGDOM
    $94. 99

    $1139.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45.2%

Gin - The Dutch invented it, the English refined it, the New World glamorised it, and now , according to most reviews, Martin Miller's have perfected it. "Westbourne Strength", was recently awarded ‘Spirit of the Year 2003’ by the Chicago Beverage Testing Institute (BTI), the world’s largest and most powerful drinks testing institute.
Miller's is London distilled using over eight botanicals and aromatics including selected Tuscan juniper, cassia bark, angelica, Florentine orris, liquorice root, coriander, finest Seville citrus peel, ground nutmeg, and cinnamon bark. The botanicals are steeped overnight in the spirit to allow a greater infusion of flavour. Millers gin is distilled in the traditional way via pot still. This is a time consuming process, but for gin production it is unrivalled. It keeps the 'body' of the spirit high and because of a lower distilling strength the congeners (flavours) are kept within the final product. Millers use a one hundred year old copper still manufactured by John Dore & Co. in 1903. Following distillation, most London dry gins are blended with British spring waters. Miller’s is transported by ship to Iceland where it is blended with glacial lava filtered waters, supposedly the purest in the world. In the small village of Borganes on Iceland's remote west coast, a final ‘mystery’ ingredient, unknown even to the master distiller, is also added.

Other reviews... Clear appearance. Sweet floral and citrus aromas have an herbaceous, juniper edge. Tasting note: Clear. Initially citrus focussed with moderate scents of lemon gelato, mandarine peel and later herbal notes including sweet oregano, thyme and pickled ginger. Citrussy entry is home-made lemonade-like followed by drier, rooty, herbal / mild juniper flavours concluding moderately peppery, fresh and medium long. This latest batch seems more subdued than 4-5 years back. 40% Alc./Vol

Other reviews... Clear. Sweet, candied lemon peel, and floral aromas. A graceful entry leads to a satiny, medium-to full-bodied palate with intensely fruity, citrus peel, mild juniper, and exotic peppercorn notes. Tasting note: [Batch 007 tasted] Excellent vibrancy with the aroma evocative of crushed pine needles, white pepper, warming coriander and delicate anise / lemon thyme. Leaner, drier and more peppery than the Freak, but equally impressive in overall impact and (arguably) truer to a contemporary London Dry, finishing with an intense coriander seed and pepper burst. The juniper feels like it’s on the greener side with pine-like freshness through the aftertaste. Solid length. Exceptional. 52% Alc./Vol.

Since 1793, Plymouth Gin has been handcrafted at England’s oldest working Gin distillery, Black Friars in Plymouth. The distillery was formerly a Dominican Monastery and the final lodgings of the Pilgrim Fathers before they set sail to the New World in 1620. The 'Mayflower' sailing ship, aswell as the monk continue to be represented on the bottle to this day.

Plymouth Gin owes its distinctive taste to a blend of ingredients that avoid the use of too much juniper or bitter botanicals, thus giving it a remarkably smooth, integrated palate. Water from the nearby hills of Dartmoor is sourced for its crystal clear purity. The result is a lighter bodied style with fabulous intensity and well balanced botanical flavours. To create Plymouth Sloe Gin, the finest sloe berries are steeped in high strength Plymouth Gin and soft Dartmoor water. The result is a smooth liqueur taste with a balance between sweet and bitter fruit flavours, and a hint of almonds from the stone of the fruit. 26%Alc./Vol.

The brainchild of Griffin Blumer and Jesse Kennedy, a duo who began making gin at home before investing their savings in a 200 litre German copper still (named Jane). Based in Marrickville, Sydney, Blumer and Kennedy were subsequently joined by one of Australia’s most experienced gin distillers, Marcel Thompson, who commenced his career with United Distillers New Zealand in 1987, as well as playing apprentice to some well respected names in gin making. Poor Tom's is handcrafted in small batches from Australian wheat spirit and features fresh green apple, native strawberry gum-leaf and chamomile in the botanical mix.

Tasting note: Clear. Drier styled with a complex bouquet that includes lemon verbena, liquorice root, hints of chamomile and pepper with later passes adding potpourri and turmeric-like scents over understated juniper and applemint. Clean, crisp delivery; mid palate features piney juniper, dried citrus peel and hints of applemint; excellent length. Finishes pleasantly peppery, refreshing and elegant with delicate bitter lemon peel, peppermint and juniper in the aftertaste. Outstanding. 41.3% Alc./Vol.

Made at Benromach (a distillery better known for their single malt whiskies). The botanical selection is inspired by Scotland’s mountains, forests and coastal fringes and features the likes of bitter orange, sea buckthorn, heather and rowanberries alongside the requisite juniper. Distilled in an affectionately named copper pot still, ‘Peggy’, Red Door is created using the vapour-infused method, which steams the neutral base spirit through the botanicals.

Tasting note: Clear. Dry and spicy aromas include coriander seed and white pepper over juniper, orris root and refreshing citrus peel. London, UNITED KINGDOM
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42%

A gold medal winning gin from Doghouse Distillery in London. Made using a wheat spirit base that they distill themselves rather than outsourcing, fourteen botanicals are included in the mix: juniper, coriander, angelica and orris, as well as more unusual green, leafy items such as bay, sage, winter savoury and cardamom. These provide a fresh pine, herbaceousness on the palate. The addition of the West African pepper 'Grains of Paradise' contributes warmth. Given all those ingredients, it's surprising how fruity Renegade is on the nose; Our tasting from a 40ml sample revealed ripe red apples and poached pears over background potpourri. The palate is more classically styled with a tangy combination of pine resin, fresh herbs (thyme / sage) and perfectly tuned heat in a juniper-driven finale that's creamy-yet-dry. There's nice vibrancy throughout, making this very sessionable indeed. Try it with premium Indian Tonic Water and a sprig of rosemary. 42% Alc./Vol.

    Silent Pool Gin (700ml)
    UNITED KINGDOM
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%
Established in 2014 as a sustainable project, Silent Pool Distillery is named after a nearby natural spring lake which is also the distillery's water source. Located in the southeast of England in the Surrey Hills countryside and produced entirely on site by Cory Mason, the gin employs 24 botanicals including lavender, chamomile, citrus, kaffir lime, local honey and juniper.

Unlike many other gins, Silent Pool is distilled using a column still. Mason comments, "Through precise control over a series of plates and cooling pipes, we are able to separate the exact flavour we want from each botanical that we use. In this way, we can break down the botanical, and capture only the section of it that we want to use in our gin.

The operation is run on a reclaimed wood-fired steam boiler from the 1970s, previously used to power a crane on Liverpool docks. Sustainable hardwood is sourced from the local Albury forest and gives the whole operation a very low carbon footprint as well as truly local credentials.

Tasting note Medium intense, peppery whiffs building with fresh juniper, lemon/lime peel, lavender and chamomile tea. Very piney on entry, with lemon and lime accented through the middle. Finish is drying, with lively spices and gentle cinnamon warmth. Ends pure, fresh and mildly sappy with pine and lavender lingering in the aftertaste. A well balanced sipper for elegant Martinis. 43% Alc./Vol.

    London, UNITED KINGDOM
    $139. 99
    Bottle
    $1679.88 Dozen
    ABV: 57.7%

V.J.O.P. (which stands for "Very Junipery Over Proof") is Sipsmith's pedal-to-the-metal London Dry expression. In their own words: "Imagining the botanicals as components in an orchestra, here we have taken the lead instrument, juniper, and amplified its presence in the ensemble, and then raised the decibels by increasing the proof alcohol. The result is our very own symphony in 'J' major."

Tasting note: [BATCH 1 tasted] Crystal clear, brilliant appearance. Opens with densely packed juniper, citrus zest, pepper and marshmallow notes gaining extra definition as the initial prickly whiffs blow off. Several minutes aeration accents piney, woody notes and settles the alcohol. A creamy entry leads into an intense pine and juniper attack followed by a controlled peppery surge; drier in the aftertaste which highlights pine needle, potpourri and hints of orange peel. Freshness, power and length are combined with terrific effect - not to mention the balance at high strength which is quite remarkable. Reserve this for your next Martini.

    Sipsmith London Dry Gin (700ml)
    London, UNITED KINGDOM
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 41.6%

Sipsmith was established in London in 2009. The first copper-pot based distillery to start up in London in 189 years, it is one of only four gin distilleries located within the city limits. Situated on a residential street in West London on the site of a former microbrewery, it's also the site which later became the office of famous beer hunter and whisky writer, Michael Jackson.

Sipsmith's first two spirits are a Barley Vodka and a London Dry Gin (a Sloe Gin is expected soon). These are produced in small batches of fewer than 300 bottles from an English Barley mash that is created off-site. The company employs a German swan-necked copper-pot still. Referred to as 'Prudence' by the proprietors, she's caricatured on the brand's labels as a stylized pot-still with a swan’s neck and head.

Sipsmith’s London Dry Gin is made using 10 botanicals from around the globe: Macedonian juniper berries, Bulgarian coriander seed, French angelica root, Spanish liquorice root, Italian orris root, Spanish ground almond, Chinese cassia bark, Madagascan cinnamon, Sevillian orange peel and Spanish lemon peel. If the botanicals seem rather commonplace by contemporary Gin standards, the company vouches for their freshness, which, as we’ve been told by the producers of Australia’s successful West Winds brand, is an often underestimated factor in Gin production. Quite simply, the fresher the ingredients, the more potent the flavour infusion will be. Companies producing Gin on a grand scale, such as Beefeater or Gordon’s simply can’t secure the quantities of botanicals required in fresh form for year round production. Water purity is also considered key.

Geraldine Coates, who has written books about gin and runs the website ‘Gintime’, also considers the size and flexibility of new micro-distilleries like Sipsmith to be their real point of interest."It means they are producing the equivalent to caviar as opposed to tuna fish," she explains. "Small batch runs mean they can make many different varieties. They could even, theoretically, take on commissions for certain flavours. And bartenders in the UK love new types of spirit to play with."

Tasting note: Pours crystal clear with a slight viscosity evident. The nose offers a restrained elegance - fresh juniper is the initial focus followed by hints of citrus peel, lavender and rosemary. A soft entry leads into a light to medium bodied mid palate that's gently spicy, almost creamy in texture and building in concentration with flavours of juniper and citrus lozenge. Perfect balance. Finishes pristine, persistent and refreshingly dry. An understated and stylish gin straight up that also adds a creaminess to G&Ts. 41.6% Alc./Vol.

Maxime Chapoutier is part of a family of winemakers who have been working in the Rhone Valley since 1808. When a botanist was enlisted to carry out research on local plants, Maxime was indirectly inspired to conduct plant distillation trials from a specific plot. It led to the creation of Sothis gin, using a base spirit derived from organically grown grapes. Our tasting found low-key aromas of bitter lemon, juniper, light ginger and white pepper that follow into a silky, medium bodied palate hinting at citrus peel, thyme, pine needles and chamomile tea, wrapped up in a peppery, medium long finish. The style here is relatively understated, so avoid heavy mixing. Botanicals include juniper, aced, chamomile, yarrow, everlasting, wild thyme, verbena and sweet clover. Tasting note: Produced at Stockholm's first craft distillery using organic wheat spirit, this Nordic take on traditional dry gin employs seven botanicals including heather, elderflower and rosemary. On the nose, you get classic London dry keynotes of juniper, coriander seed, white pepper and orange peel as well as hints of curry leaf and liquorice root. The concentration at low ABV is also impressive, starting soft and oily but building into a sweeping fan of coriander seed and pepper warmth. It's momentarily bittersweet before the final stages end piney, fresh and spicy. Obvious Martini potential, otherwise recommended with lemon peel and a sprig of rosemary to emphasise the citrus and herb elements. 40% Alc./Vol.

    Tanqueray Gin (700ml)
    London, UNITED KINGDOM
    $62. 99
    Bottle
    $755.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Gin became popular in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, following the increase in duty on French wine and brandy imposed by William III. Until about the beginning of the present century most gin made in England was sweetened, but sweetened gin then became almost wholly displaced in popular favour by dry gin. One of the finest examples of this style is Tanqueray.

Charles Tanqueray established his distillery in Finsbury, North London where fresh water was then accessible. The year was 1830. Tanqueray was obsessed with producing a premium product, and after some research and success, he gained substantial recognition for his gin. After merging with Gordons in 1898, the U.S. market opened up and Tanqueray was enjoyed by such personalities as Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra and President Kennedy. The distinctive bottle shape has aided its ongoing market success - its design based on 19th century London fire hydrants.

In the production of Tanqueray, grain spirit at 96% alc/vol is rectified in pot stills with botanical flavourings. Spirit and botanicals are then boiled, with aromas and flavours infusing in spirit vapours then condensing to form gin. Tanqueray use aged botanicals, maturing wild Tuscan juniper berries for two years before use. Coriander, angelica root, cassia bark, cinnamon, liquorice, lemon and orange peel also determine Tanqueray's quintessentially English style.ginspecials2010

    The Botanist Gin (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $85. 99
    Bottle
    $1031.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

The once mothballed Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay is better known for its idiosyncratic and eclectic range of single malts. Now they’re making a gin that’s the talk of the town.

Mark Reynier, one of the key instigators in this distillery’s recent revival, explains, “Botanist gin came about because we are curious about distilling.  For us it is not a question of merely pushing buttons, we like to test our distilling skills, we are intrigued.  With Trestaraig and X4 we have explored triple and quadruple distillation, so with a Lomond still that we had liberated from Inverleven in 2003, we were wondering how to use it. It was an experimental still, the first of its kind and now the last”.

The resulting gin uses nine of the classic gin aromatics – orris root, cassia bark, coriander seed, etc – and augments these with a heady harvest of 22 wild, native island botanicals, hand-picked by Bruichladdich’s expert foraging team from the windswept hills, peat bogs and atlantic shores of this Hebridean island of Islay. These include wild Islay Juniper, Elderflower, Bog Myrtle, Tansy, Hawthorn Flower, Birch Leaves, White Clover, Sweet Cicely and Lady's Bedstraw, amongst others.

This truly seasonal and exotic cocktail is then slow "simmer" distilled in the lomond pot-still, nicknamed "ugly betty". Head distiller, Jim McEwan explains, “Betty prefers to work at low-pressure and won’t be rushed. So our precious botanicals are slowly and gently coaxed into releasing their complex, signature aromatics. Jim says he had to "learn a new dance" with Betty, and none of us knew what to expect from that first, achingly-slow 17 hour distillation.

The result: a highly distinctive, complex, floral gin with outstanding finish and impeccable provenance. In an age of re-badged industrial gins, the Botanist stands out as a truly artisanal, small-batch, hand-crafted labour of love and distiller's art. A breath of botanical Islay in every glass.

Tasting note: [30ml sample] Crystal clear, slightly viscous appearance. Powerful bouquet opens with fresh juniper and thyme followed by orange peel, coriander and pine. Excellent complexity and purity. Medium dry, concentrated profile delivers a creamy-yet-peppery mouthfeel with a nice balance between citrus peel and juniper. Orange peel on the finish leads into a subtle, persistent peppermint / eucalypt aftertaste. Great stuff - and if you're mixing, it lends a lovely creaminess to G&T’s. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... a superbly clean and juniper led gin; while it features "22 native botanicals", The Botanist is distinctly London Dry in style. 5 Stars - diffordsguide.com

"With all of the botanicals used, it can take a while to move from nosing to tasting as there is a lot to discover. The key things that will stick with you are a fresh, lemony aroma coupled with spring flowers and a touch of mint. As you taste, the gin is clean and not too oily with more of the lemon floral notes sticking out. The juniper certainly falls to a background player here, but this gin, even with the dozens of botanicals used, doesn't get muddied. This is a gin that would work wonders in a sour or Collins preparation." 92 points - distiller.com

The Melbourne Gin Company MGC Dry Gin (700ml)
    Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $71. 99
    Bottle
    $863.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42%
Launched in July 2013, ''MGC'' doffs its hat to the London Dry style with the two major components being juniper berries and coriander seed. There are 11 botanicals in total with the grapefruit peel and rosemary coming from the garden at Gembrook Hill Vineyard. The other botanicals are macadamia, sandalwood, honey lemon myrtle and organic navel orange, all sourced from Australia. The exotics in the mix are angelica root, orris root and cassia bark.

Each botanical is distilled separately and then blended to a proprietary recipe – essentially a winemakers approach. They employ a copper pot baine-marie alembic still traditionally used for making perfume. This allows the preservation of the delicate nature of the botanicals.

The final component is the water used to break the gin back. MGC use Gembrook rainwater which is pure and fresh and allows the botanicals to shine through. At only 60kms from Melbourne this local source contributes to the definition of the unique “Melbourne Dry Gin” style.

The final product is not chill filtered.

"We didn’t want to take out the oils that contribute so much to the aromatics and mouth feel of the gin" comments distiller, Adam Marks. "So when the gin is very cold the oils become slightly insoluble and form a light haze. The French use the word louche to describe this. In a different context someone who is louche is of a shady character! Each bottle is numbered to reflect the small batches in which it is made."

We look forward to tasting this new Aussie gem soon!

The English word 'gin' is derived from the French word 'genievre' meaning juniper, the original herb used by the ancient distillers to make their medicines. It must still be the most prominent flavour in gin under EC regulations. London Dry gin is a style of gin and not a geographical description. The term 'dry' is a reference from the old days when the most popular gin was 'Old Tom' which was sweetened with sugar and glycerine. Dry gin was so named to distinguish it from the sweet version.

Tasting note: Crystal clear. An initial whiff of dried juniper, lemon peel and pine needle is followed by sweet, caramel like scents. Neither fresh nor distinctive as gin should be. Palate is faintly fruity in a blanco tequila kind of way and on the sweeter side with hints of marshmallow and little juniper to speak of. Warm, spicy mouthfeel. Meek citrus and juniper are followed by a peppery, citrus and pine needle aftertaste. With so many wonderful gins now available, it's a wonder why any one would bother with this. 37% Alc./Vol.

Of the many gins in their portfolio, Whitley Neill considers this to be their most classic. Focusing on just one citrus: dried orange peel, it remains true to the minimalist recipes of traditional London Drys, the short list of other botanicals including juniper, coriander, angelica root and liquorice root. The resulting gin delivers strong notes of candied orange, a touch of white pepper and a solid backbone of juniper with a pleasant oily texture that cools the mouth. Distilled at the multi-award-winning City of London Distillery, the first, and still the only, gin distillery in The City of London in 200 years. 43% Alc./Vol.

It's always amusing to see London Dry Gin on a label, and then discover the product is produced hundreds of miles away from London. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful new gin that adds another page to the ever-growing book of 'boutique' bottlings. As our portfolio grows so does our awareness and understanding of the intricacies and curiosities of this most versatile spirit. Lovers of citrusy styles will most certainly find favour with Whitley Neil, while the "juniper junkies" might want to give this one a miss.

Tasting note: [BATCH 1 tasted] Clear silvery appearance. Plenty of citrus peel immediately evident in the opening sniffs, perhaps the juniper has been upped slightly too since our last encounter with this brand. There's hints of pepper as well. A creamy entry follows through to a medium dry, juniper focused mid palate. Great mouthfeel. Really nicely balanced with the late citrus oils entering to round off beautifully fresh, balanced and tangy. Delicate spices carry through to the aftertaste. 42% Alc./Vol.

First tasting 2011: Crystal clear, water like appearance. A delightful perfume of citrus oils, blossom and infusions leap from the glass. Underneath the citrus, some spice lurks, supported by a pristinely clean, sweet spirit. The palate weight is generous yet soft and silky, delivering an explosion of creamy citrus flavours above a delicately spiced background. A touch of anise emerges. Perfect balance. Long aftertaste of citrus peel and spice. 42.0% Alc./Vol.

    ABV: 43.7%

Crafted in a century old copper still at Langley Distillery in Birmingham using British Wheat, this new Scottish gin comes infused with six native hand foraged botanicals from the Isle of Colonsay in the Scottish Hebrides, with a further ten as the base. These include water mint, meadowsweet, sea buckthorn, heather flowers, lemon balm and bog myrtle. Tasted from a 20ml sample, the nose is slightly reticent, and it's clearly a contemporary style, so juniper isn't salient, but the palate manages a herbal, citrus complexity that makes this engaging uncut. It's textural, oily, spicy and long through the finish with herbal tea notes and a host of botanicals playing second fiddle. The gin comes suitably presented in a distinctive bottle displaying an expressionist water colour representation of Kiloran Bay on Colonsay. 43.7% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Wild Island Botanic Gin is a refreshing and Summery gin. At its heart is the deep flavour of the dried lemon peel and the character of the essential oils has been carried into the gin well. This is balanced with floral notes from the heather flowers, sweet notes from the Meadowsweet, some tartness from the Sea Buckthorn, and a more refreshing kick at the finish from the lemon balm and mint. Ideal in a Tom Collins or Gin and Tonic, garnish with a slice of lemon and serve with a light tonic to bring out the citrus flavours. - theginguide.com

    NETHERLANDS
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 44.5%
The Zuidam Distillery was started back in 1975 by Fred van Zuidam as a deliberately contained operation with one small copper still. It took more than a decade to forge their present reputation as the finest distillery in the Netherlands. In 1989 Zuidam expanded their warehouse to 600 square meters and one production line. Presently, both sons, Patrick and Gilbert, run the distillery under the watchful eyes of their parents. With four brand new copper stills, over 1000 oak barrels, four production lines and modern tank storage, Zuidam is now a state of the art operation, however, they have held on to one throwback from the past - Windmills. These are used to mill the grains destined for their Genevers and Malt Whisky. It not only preserves this iconic piece of Dutch heritage, but more importantly, the producers believe that the traditional slow grind causes almost no increase in the temperature of the grains and thus helps preserve the wonderful aromas.

"Dutch Courage" is a reference to Genever's past, when Genever found favour across the English Channel; first as a medicine (Samuel Pepys wrote in 1660 of curing a case of "colic" with a dose of "strong water made with juniper") and then as a beverage. British soldiers encountered it as they marauded around northern Europe in the Thirty Years War and found it much to their liking. They brought back a taste for the "Dutch Courage" as they called the 'medicine' (often taking a good slug before battle), and inevitably made their own contribution to the lexicon of spirits: The word 'genever' was corrupted by the English to 'Ginever' and finally abbreviated to 'Gin'.

Other reviews... Wonderful beginning aroma of dried citrus zest/rind; following aeration the bouquet turns steely, spicy and earthy. The palate entry is tart, sublimely orangey and borderline sour; at midpalate the angelica, juniper and cardamom take charge, mingling perfectly with the orange rind. Ends silkily with flashes of orange zest and juniper. First class. 96-100 points - www.wineenthusiast.com

...Appearance: Crystal clear. Aroma: A scent rather like just-watered earth (orris root?) mingles with the more upfront juniper and citrus. Aftertaste: Long, cleansing pine fresh finish with parma violets.Outstanding. 5 stars. - www.diffordsguide.com

Copper House gin is distilled from three locally-grown grains: barley, wheat and oats. Adnams Masterbrewer, Fergus Fitzgerald, makes a beer 'wash' from these grains which is fermented to around 6% abv without the addition of hops. Head distiller, John McCarthy, then takes this beer and puts it through a 'beer stripping' column which removes all the alcohols to create a 'low wine'. The 'low wines' are subsequently distilled in a hand-made copper rectification columns to create a clean, pure spirit. The spirit is then returned to the copper pot still to be redistilled and infused with thirteen carefully chosen botanicals. John spent several months experimenting with different blends to create the signature First Rate flavour with integrated aromas of juniper berries, spice and fresh citrus. 48% Alc./Vol.

Launched in 2017 and created by Master Distiller, Arko Ryynänen and Michelin starred chef, Jaakko Sorsa, the Arctic Blue Gin range is distilled at Nordic Premium Beverages Distillery located in the small village of Ilomantsi in Eastern Finland. The company behind the operation is also the country's oldest winery. Produced using botanicals from the freezing northern regions of Finland, Arctic Blue has been described as "like walking through a wild bilberry forest on a misty morning." Boasting powerful aromas of juniper, liquorice root, grapefruit and tart red berries, it's a medium to full-bodied, vibrant, warming gin with piney juniper, coriander seed, citrus zest and a burst of white pepper adding length and depth to the palate. Wild berries from the forests of North-Karelia are key botanicals, and the berry notes are amplified with minimal water (or tonic), which also turns the gin cloudy white. Non-chill filtered. 46.2% Alc./Vol. Batch #33 tasted from a 30ml sample.

Other reviews... Awarded double-gold medal in 2018 at the World Spirits Awards. Best gin and Spirit of the Year 2018.

...Arctic Blue Gin delivers an abundance of Nordic character with fragrant pine notes, subtly fruity bilberry and delicate florals. These three pillars of the flavour profile are beautifully supported with undertones of cardamom, coriander seeds and anise, and the mouthfeel is smooth, full and crisp. With Tonic Water, the piney juniper notes are elevated further alongside floral rose, while the bilberry character brings a very gentle sweetness that lingers enjoyably. It is a skilfully constructed and characterful gin that certainly transports your mind to the pine forests of Finland. - Paul Jackson, theginguide.com

A collaboration between The Oxford Artisan Distillery (a first for the district) and the Ashmolean Museum of art and archaeology. The distiller's aim is to source sustainably grown botanicals from within a 50 mile radius of their site.

Tasting note: Curious, slightly muted, earthy juniper-like aromas - also hints of lemongrass, green cardamom and rose hip. Bathtub Gin (700ml)
    London, UNITED KINGDOM
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43.3%

Winner - Best Compound Gin - 2020 World Gin Awards.

The name "Bathtub gin" originally referred to any style of homemade spirit made in amateur conditions. It was first used in 1920 during the prohibition-era in the United States, with reference to the poor quality alcohol that was being made in home bath tubs and mixed into cocktails to disguise its coarse flavour. Obviously, this contemporary version is not that sort of gin. Launched in 2011, it was the very first product from Atom Brands, the innovative team responsible for That Boutiquey Whisky Company and Drinks by the Dram, amongst others.

The gin is created using the traditional method of ''cold compounding''. High quality copper pot-still spirit is twice infused with juniper, orange peel, coriander, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom. This double-infusion process allows fresh botanical flavours that might be too delicate to survive the distillation process to shine through the finished drink. Production is restricted to ultra-small batches of just 30-60 bottles at a time and the length of the compounding period is controlled entirely by periodic sampling. Our tasting found a lifted, complex bouquet including crushed pine buds, lemon cough drops, sweet oregano plus notes of pepper, cinnamon and cardamom. Medium-bodied, the palate follows with attractive spicy, woody-juniper flavours and a glowing white pepper, citrus zest, pine and Fisherman's Friend finish. Vivacious and drier-styled, this is very easy to like - as is the distinctive presentation; the bottle is wrapped in brown paper and completed with string and wax to resemble a Victorian apothecary. As for mixing, the creators recommend keeping it simple - premium tonic, or lots of ice and a slice of orange to garnish. 43.3% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The nose is heavy with juniper, cinnamon and cardamom; orange oil adds a touch if citrusy depth. Overall, the nose is quite heavy. The palate builds quietly, with cinnamon, orange and juniper culminating all at once. As they fade, fresh cracked juniper berry gives way to notes of forest and clove. The finish is quite long with cinnamon and orange again dominating. Very smooth spirit overall, but heavy on the spices and herbs. In cold compounded gins, you definitely get a side of common ingredients like cinnamon that you don’t always pick up when they are distilled. For example... you almost get a more literal fresh-ground-cinnamon note in here. Bathtub/cold-compounded/infused gins are fantastic for beginners at picking out tasting notes, learning how to decouple flavor accords. While distilling can be transformative and surprising (coriander for example), bathtub gins are much more literal to the ingredients in the way you’re used to tasting them. Right from the spice jar if you may have it. - theginisin.com

Gin has been produced in England since the early seventeenth century. During the nineteenth century, a chemist named James Burrough combined the wild flavour of juniper with the subtle sweetness of angelica and the spice of coriander to produce a fresher, more aromatic style. Burrough was supposedly the first to coin the term 'London Dry' to differentiate his gin from its Dutch counterparts.

Inspired by the iconic jewels housed in the Tower of London, this modern re-imagining of the standard Beefeater was launched in 1993, discontinued in 2009 then re-released in 2015 with the same recipe: That's the same nine botanicals used for the original Beefeater label - juniper, lemon peel, coriander seed, almond, Seville orange peel, orris root, licorice root, angelica root, and angelica seed — with the addition of grapefruit and a heightened ABV. The 2022 Crown Jewel release sees the screen-printed graphics adapted to yet another bold bottle design. Since relaunching the brand has been awarded several medals at the 2022 international spirit competitions, including a Double-Gold at the International Spirits Challenge, Gold at the World Gin Awards and Gold at the International Wine & Spirits Competition. We like to keep this one simple. Think Martinis, minimal vermouth and a lemon peel garnish. 50% Alc./Vol.

    NETHERLANDS
    $99. 99

    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

What at first glance may appear to be a thoroughly English product is actually produced in Holland. No bad thing given the Dutch invented gin. In fact, it comes out of one of the country's oldest distilleries using a proprietary recipe rooted in British tradition. Berry Bros. & Rudd (est.1698) based at No.3 St. James Street in London take credit for the formula, as referenced in the superb presentation. Inspiration for the key symbol on the label came when packaging designers found a key to 'The Parlour', probably the oldest room in BBR's shop. Produced from a grain based spirit via a 100-year-old, brick-encased, copper pot still, the limited range of botanicals pushes tradition to the extreme with a simple three fruit and three spice recipe: juniper, from Italy, sweet Spanish orange peel and grapefruit peel. Completing the mix are angelica root, adding an earthy, drying quality; Moroccan coriander seed, which releases a lemony flavour during distilling as well as adding a spicy, slightly peppery finish, and cardamom pods, which also add a spicy, aromatic, warm bite.

From a fresh bottle, the first thing that grabs you about No.3 are its vivid aromas of fresh cut grapefruit, unripe raspberries, lavender, black pepper and pine sap. The palate is full-bodied and assertive, led by a peppery attack including juicy grapefruit flavours, hints of coriander and a warm spiciness that carries through to the finish, winding down with grapefruit, ripe lemon and freshly sawn pine. All up, it's a zesty, masculine-styled London Dry defined by grapefruit and spice, and the intensity of flavour at 46% means a little less goes further. Keep a bottle in the freezer and you have Summer's ideal suitor to dry Martinis or classic G&Ts.

A gin that combines traditional exotic botanicals with native New Zealand Horopito, one of the world's most ancient flowering plants. The name is inspired by the extremely rare and endangered black robin (Petroica traversi), found only on the remote Chatham Islands. A percentage of profits are donated to the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand, an organisation dedicated to the preservation of the blue duck for future generations.

Tasting note: Crystal clear, silvery appearance. Initially juniper focussed bouquet is followed by hints of dried parsley, black pepper and citrus peel. Medium dry, light to medium bodied; presents an interesting combination of juniper, pine and dried herbal flavours with a vibrant peppery surge at the finish. Moderate persistence. Clean and well made. 43% Alc./Vol.

The Irish took out the top prize at the 2019 World Gin Awards. This one comes from Blacks Distillery located in the scenic town of Kinsale in County Cork. Along with the gin, they distill their own rum and whiskey. Thirteen botanicals are used including juniper berries, coriander seeds, licorice, orris and angelica root, refreshingly balanced with citrus and spice.

Tasting note: [20ml sample] Vaguely earthy / rubbery aromas present in the initial pass (latex, rubber band?) ...atypical for gin. Better after 2-3 minutes air contact revealing moderate piney / woodsy / juniper scents as well as coriander, citrus and hints of kelp. Good concentration to the vibrant juniper, liquorice, coriander and orris root-like flavours. Builds definition with sustained freshness. 42% Alc./Vol.

Based in Lerwick, Shetland Islands, Blackwood’s aim is to be the most innovative spirits company in the world. The Shetland Islands, lying at the far North of Scotland off the coast of Norway, have an ancient Viking past. Originally settled by the Norse Vikings, today Shetland is part of Scotland. Its far Northern remoteness has strong associations of quality, purity and modernity. It represents a story and a people that are a mix of Scotland and Scandinavia and their tales of daring deeds. Shetland has been a center for sea trade in the North Atlantic for centuries and today its pristine austere landscape is known for its smooth pure water and local produce as well as its famous ponies! Refreshing and richly aromatic, Blackwood's Vintage Gin is reminiscent of the surrounding North Sea in its natural pale green colour. Its infusion of local handpicked botanicals recreates the essence of Shetland in a bottle.

Made with Summer 2003 Wild Shetland Botanicals [vintage subject to change], natural Ingredients include Angelica Root introduced by the Vikings 800 years ago, Wild Water Mint picked from around the lochs for subtle refreshment, Sea Pink flowers gathered during its brief summer flowering, Juniper Berries from Umbria, Dried Lemon and Orange Peels, Cassia Bark, Liquorice Root, Ground Nutmeg, Cinnamon Bark, Orrisroot & Coriander Seeds. Ideal in a gin & tonic, 60% of taste testers voted Blackwood's Vintage Gin as their #1 choice in blind taste tests and 80% placed it in their top two, against Gordon's, Tanqueray, Plymouth and Bombay Sapphire. The producers claim Blackwood's to be a more balanced gin for contemporary tastes and so luscious it can be drunk neat!

Tasting note: Clear. Sweet, delicately floral, ripe citrus and juniper berry aromas follows through to a round, glycerous medium-bodied palate with even juniper, citrus peel, pastry dough, and mineral flavors. Finishes with a dry, somewhat lean, talc, powdered sugar, white pepper, lemon rind, and mineral water fade. A understated style with a nice interplay of subtle botanicals and minerals. 40% Alc./Vol.

Blackwood was founded in July 2002 with the aim of building Shetland’s first Scotch whisky distillery.

However, as reported by The Gin Blog, "...in May 2008, the company went into administration, with a new company, Catfirth Ltd, being established to continue the business. It’s difficult to separate fact from rumour (sometimes malicious) about what happened to date, the plans going forward or the distillery and it’s producers- but suffice to say the gin was born from this enormous distillery fiasco".

The firm now distills its gin on the Scottish mainland but still buys the wild botanicals from crofters who harvest them on Shetland.

This special high proof bottling was made with Summer 2007 Wild Shetland Botanicals. Natural Ingredients include Angelica Root introduced by the Vikings 800 years ago, Wild Water Mint picked from around the lochs for subtle refreshment, Sea Pink flowers gathered during its brief summer flowering, Juniper Berries from Umbria, Dried Lemon and Orange Peels, Cassia Bark, Liquorice Root, Ground Nutmeg, Cinnamon Bark, Orrisroot & Coriander Seeds.
