While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

It’s been a while between Moondarras and Studebakers but here’s one. Always idiosyncratic wines, and talking points, from a winemaker with a left-of-centre approach. Don’t be bored, ever, they shout.
What a start! Ferrous, warm asphalt, earthy notes, manure even, an extreme and exotic direction of reduction awaits on first sniff. Let it lie and there’s beautiful cherry and rose hip tea scents, similar in the palate which is more yielding in first minutes, tightened by light yet lacy tannins, following through a sinewy and long finish. It’s a very beautiful wine past the reduction, but that might be beauty too. I love this. This is great.

As the flagship pinot noir, this lives up to its reputation. It's a whorl of the darkest cherries, covered in baking spices, a fleck of mint and an overlay of savoury inputs, the French oak neatly integrated. It builds on the palate, full bodied but not unwieldy. mouth-filling and generous, with the plushest tannins, ripe and sweet. Very satisfying and approachable now. Drink by 2029.

Jane Faulkner - James Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionThe 2019 The Moorooduc McIntyre Pinot Noir is clearly built for the longer haul: the tannins are firmer and tighter in the mouth (I like them like this, but that's a style choice), and the fruit has weight and presence. The fruit is warm, as was the vintage, but it doesn't impede the flow or discourse of flavor across the palate. The length through the finish is the final tell-all. The construction is classy—this wine is well built and elegant, with all corners packed with concentrated fruit. Lovely. Pleasure. Drink 2022 - 2032.

Now, this has come together beautifully and appears so gentle and refined. Subtle aromas of spiced cherries and autumnal leaves, sumac and woodsy spices. The palate is shy of medium-bodied with fine, lacy tannins, a core of sweet-ish fruit and a savoury overlay. It’s compelling and totally enticing, so it’s a shame this is not out now – boo hoo! In 2024 apparently, but worth following up.

2023 Mount Mary Pinot NoirYarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$220. 00Bottle$2640.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkPinot Noir has been integral to Mount Mary since the early years, with fruit drawn from both the original 1971 block and more recent plantings of modern clones including MV6, 777, 667, 115 and Pommard. The winemaking remains deliberately simple: fermentation with whole berries, gentle skin contact for around two weeks, and 16 months of maturation in barrel, including 25% new oak. The 2023 release continues the estate's tradition of producing Pinot Noir defined by clarity, balance and understated elegance.

JamesSuckling.comThe 2023 Pinot Noir is delicate and fine and leads with an array of red berries, exotic spices and bramble. The oak adds a creamy element that frames the aromas, and this pulls through to the palate as well. The wine here is full spectrum and savory; while the fruit core is bright red, there is a distinct wrap of iodine, oyster shell, forest moss, sweet tobacco pouch and the merest hint of tapenade. The wine really grows on you the more it is tasted, the net affect being totally charming, complex and intriguing. 13.5% alcohol sealed under natural cork. Drink 2025-2038.

Erin Larkin - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate2026 Pinot Noir of the Year. PR writes: Destemmed and fermented with as many whole berries as possible. 15 months in French barriques (25% new). First year using Diam as opposed to natural cork. Bright purple. Youthful with complex aromas of wild strawberry, boysenberry, potpourri, star anise and a little Sichuan pepper, even. Even better on the palate where old vines and low yields have conspired (along with the winemaker, Sam Middleton) to produce a supremely textured, layered and flawlessly balanced wine. The tannins are silky and very persistent, and this will be worth both the money and time for those that still have some 10–20 years from now. Drink 2026-2040.

Philip Rich - James Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionPeople rush for Mount Mary Pinot Noir, and it’s a much smaller make than the Quintet, and very good it is too, but it’s the Cabernet that most often makes it into my own cellar.
This is perhaps a little more spicy, concentrated and lively than some of the releases in recent years. Strawberry, blood plum, quite some five spice exotic top notes, nutmeg, dried roses, a lick of cedar oak. It’s bright and gently sappy, rhubarb and blood orange, a fine grained emery grip to tannin, with a bright and juicy red cherry and strawberry finish of excellent length. There’s a bit of extra electricity and energy to this wine, and I reckon it will be a beautiful thing with considered cellaring. Drink 2028 - 2043.

Vines average age 27yo, hand-picked, bunch-sorted on vibrating tables, open-fermented with cultured yeast, 14 days on skins, matured in French barriques (25-30% new). Glorious colour; the bouquet has the complexity you expect from a 20+yo Burgundy with aromas of field and forest floor. The palate is utterly exceptional, with perfect balance and length. The multitude of flavours swirl and dance - red tree fruits, red cherry foremost, plums close behind, thence to field and forest floor, capturing wild raspberry and strawberry. Sam Middleton thinks this will be one of the all-time greats of Mount Mary, and I'm sure he is right. Drink by 2037.

Bunch-sorted on vibrating tables, Oscillys-destemmed whole berries, 10-14 days on skins, matured 14-18 months in oak (25% new). Not a hair out of place, all the boxes with big ticks. James Halliday - Wine CompanionA complex and attractive pinot that offers bright, vibrant red-cherry aromas with a gently spicy edge, aided by some well integrated oak influence. The palate has quite vivid red-fruit flavors, smoothly aligned tannins and a gently creamy edge to the finish. Bright, tangy resolve with resilient fruit flavors. Delicious. Nick Stock - JamesSuckling.comGee, they’ve turned out a very good Pinot Noir in 2018.
Strawberries, roses, cinnamon toast and biscuits, a whisper of undergrowth. Medium-bodied, autumnal feel, a little rhubarb, coolness and ‘mineral’ feel, finesse to the acidity and supremely ‘elegant’ feel to the wine, fine graphite tannin, and a wonderfully long and fragrant strawberry and spice finish. Gee, this is a special wine. I’m smitten.

2022 Mount Mary Pinot NoirYarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$215. 00Bottle$2580.00 DozenABV: 13.3%Closure: CorkThe Mount Mary Pinot Noir blends fruit from the original 1971 block with newer plantings featuring modern clones such as MV6, 777, 667, 115, and Pommard on American rootstocks. Emphasizing simplicity in winemaking, the Pinot Noir undergoes fermentation with 100% whole berries, 10-14 days of skin contact, and matures in barrels for 16 months, incorporating 25% new oak barriques.
Other Reviews....
Destemmed and fermented with as many whole berries as possible. Left to soak for four days, pre-fermentation with one pump over per day, then plunged three times per day; 15 months in French barriques (25% new). In a slightly darker fruit spectrum to the 2021. Cherries, stewed quince and spiced raspberries. A little less floral and a little earthier. Great intensity on the suave, concentrated yet perfectly pitched and balanced palate. The tannins superfine and persistent. I'd love to have a few bottles of this in the cellar to open up over the next 10 to 12 years. Drink 2025 - 2035.

Philip Rich - Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionThe 2022 Pinot Noir leads with a bouquet drenched in cherry and flowers, milk chocolate, bramble, moss and forest floor. The fruit character is pure, but there is so much more going on here than just the usual cavalcade of red berries. In the mouth, the wine is silky, lush and textural, with cocoa powder, a hint of Ovaltine (one assumes an oak character), soft licorice, strawberries and scratched blood orange. The package is creamy and svelte. This is perhaps less weighty in the fruit department than last year, which means that, at this stage, the components that shape the wine have greater dominance over the experience than usual. Having said this, it remains a sophisticated, classy-as-hell expression of Australian Pinot Noir and one that comes thoroughly and heartily recommended. 13.3% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2024 - 2042.

Erin Larkin - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate“The diabolically low crops of 2022 and the warmer weather have led to this concentrated and intensely flavoured Pinot noir yet still embodies all the hallmarks of this exceptional grape when grown in our vineyards here at Mount Mary.”, says, I think, Sam Middleton of this wine. Mount Mary Pinot is a different expression to many from the Yarra Valley, not least in a warmer vintage, but gee, it has some character and personality.
Cherry, ripe strawberry, rhubarb, mocha, almost a liquorice richness here, mint too, baking spices and cedar. It’s a plush and deep expression of Pinot Noir with firm grainy tannin, fresh raspberry acidity, and a hazelnut finish of excellent length, with some blood orange tang to close. Plenty of oomph and impact. It’ll do well in the cellar and develop more perfume and finesse. Excellent. Drink 2026 - 2036+

This wine was produced from secondary fruit as a result of a devastating frost event in the early hours of October 23rd 2006 which destroyed the primary crop. Whilst significantly different to 'normal' vintages it is not without merit and we have released this wine as a 'not for sale' gift to our dedicated customers who have shared and endured the seasons with us over the years. -

Left to soak for four days, pre-fermentation with one pump over per day, then plunged three times per day. 15 months in French barriques (25% new). A bright crimson red. Perfumed and seductive even at this early stage. Aromas of wild red berries, gentle spice, dark rose and bracken. Concentrated and structured with very fine, sinewy and savoury tannins. A brilliant, non-mainstream Yarra Valley pinot that's been built to go the distance. Drink 2022 - 2035.

Philip Rich - Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionThe winemaking investment in the pinot noir has been substantial. Maker Sam Middleton eschews the common regional recipe of whole-bunches, instead maximizing whole berries. These are extracted judiciously with pump-overs and plunging, a sure way to avoid soft, hollow wines. The defining factor of these pinots is the lack of obvious fruit, Middleton’s aim. This is my type of ideology, with riffs on root spice, damson, quince paste and griotte, that sweet cherry scent seldom found in pinot outside of great Burgundy. A stunning pinot. I may be underscoring it. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

Ned Goodwin MW - JamesSuckling.comThe 2021 Pinot Noir is aromatic and silky (two obvious qualities I accept). It offers notes of redcurrant, pomegranate, cherry, tobacco, graphite/lead pencil, a hint of poached strawberry and even inflections of sumac. Quince paste is suggested, and quince paste it is. (The power of suggestion is strong, but sometimes it's apt—you've got to be big enough to own up to descriptors that aren't your own.) There are also juicy, ripe, summer strawberries. This is spiced and rich and sits firmly on the mid-palate, but it is supple and succulent also. Cool-feeling tannins shape the fruit in the mouth and draw the wine out over the long finish. It has a super svelte, streamlined shape. The tannins are gently chewy and persist through the finish. This is a lovely wine. It is placid but sure, sapid. No whole bunches contribute to the texture here. It has super fine tannins. Four to six days pumped over, the wine was plunged rigorously during ferment. Generally, it sits on the skins for a couple of days post-ferment (14-16 days in total) and then is pressed. It matured in 25% new oak for 14-16 months. 13.3% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2023 - 2041.

Erin Larkin - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateSimple, timeless labels on these wines from Mount Mary, and I’m glad they’ve not changed for quite some time. Sam Middleton thinks maybe the best release since the 2015.
Ripe strawberry, a little spice, pretty too with some rose and chamomile, mint and undergrowth. It’s medium-bodied, red berries and honey, with a savoury tobacco edge, the quality of tannin is excellent here, offering grip and a sort of tea leaf character, which puts me in mind of Barbaresco (though don’t mind me), and the finish is long, firm and shapely, and kind of ferrous and minerally. It feels young and pent up as at now, to some extent, though I reckon it will evolve into a classic MM Pinot with considered cellaring. A terrific release. Drink 2026 - 2038+

Strawberry, kind of autumnal and savoury, fine spicy oak, a little sarsaparilla richness and dried rose. It’s bright and fine-boned, gossamer tannin, fresh red fruits, gently toasty cinnamon oak adds a layer of mouth-perfume and something of an exotic character here too, freshness and excellent length, with a subtle powdery grip. Graceful and delicate. And a distinct ‘mineral’ feel this year, or so I think. It’s a beautiful wine. More to come. Drink 2024 - 2036+

Gary Walsh - The Wine Front (September 2022)Classical, concentrated, seamless and silky. These are words I would use to describe the Mount Mary Vineyard Pinot Noir style, and the latter I would attribute to the masterful crafting of tannin that the Middletons have perfected in their vineyards. This 2020 Pinot Noir is supple and red-fruited, with a poise and clarity that goes long in the mouth. Right now, the fruit remains subdued and restrained as it glides across the tongue through the finish. The length of flavor explains, patiently, that the wine has far to go before it sleeps and that it has many layers to unfurl in that time. Patience, young one. Drink 2022 - 2037.

The light ruby hue belies the whorl of intense flavour. Pretty aromatics. It bursts out with raspberries and cherries, then richer strawberry compote infused with bitter herbs, cloves and sarsaparilla. Jane Faulkner - James Halliday's Wine Companion (February 2021)From a strong vintage, this has trademark earthy aromas, as well as blueberries, forest wood and some sappy red cherries. The palate has a very composed, layered and long band of ripe, fine tannin, supported by fresh acidity that elevates the blueberry, cherry and red-plum flavors. These pinots look best after a few years in bottle, so try from 2024.

JamesSuckling.com (November 2021)The flavour profile of this wine is just made for Peking duck, is the first thing that comes in to my head. And now I’ve made myself quite hungry, though luckily, I will be having a bit of duck for tea today. Duck ragu, in fact, ordered from Dear Sainte Eloise.
All the squishy red fruits, five spice, with something of an autumnal character here too. It’s medium-bodied, sweet uptake of poached red fruits and cherry, but fresh with it, and the tannin is sure-footed with an emery board feel, the finish sweet, long, and supple. Quite forward in a way, but very charming.

Mount Mary wines in the Yarra Valley, are regarded as amongst Australia's very best. The vineyard is situated on northern, well drained slopes, and historically has been regarded as an exceptional site. Established in the early 1970's by Dr John Middleton and his wife Marli, the reputation of Mount Mary has spread well beyond the shores of Australia with serious wine collectors world wide snapping up any stocks that happen to find their way onto the markets.
For the last decade, Dr John Middleton has been assisted by winemaker and viticulturist, Mario Marson, and together they have produced a collection of wines that are truly formidable. Middleton is approaching his mid 70's, consequently much of the responsibility of winemaking has been shifted to Mario Marson. Marson, while largely unknown outside of the winemaking community must be regarded as Australia's greatest shadow winemaker.
The Mount Mary Pinot Noirs are regarded amongst the country's finest and positioned along side Bass Phillip, Stoniers, Springvale and New Zealand's Ata Rangi, Martinborough and Felton Road.

Notes sourced from Mount Mary....
This is a rich and intense wine with great colour, aroma and flavour. There are typical, earthy Pinot Noir characteristics combined with powerful cherry and plum which are well matched by plenty fire from the alcohol, a hint of volatility and well balanced, tannic finish. This shows what a good year it was for this variety. The wine needs plenty of time to integrate and be ready for consumption when it will develop in the typical, velvety, smoothness of pinot. It shows great promise now. Mount Mary Pinot Noirs are deliberately structured to not be full of young berry fruit when young, they are sometimes bitter and angular. 13.5 % Alc./Vol. -

Let me put it upfront: corks don't come better than this. This was a great pinot vintage, and everything about this patrician pinot reflects this, and a great deal more. The colour is deep and bright, the bouquet with enough different aromas to cause the beagle to sit by the glass and refuse to move on, the palate with more of the same, no single fruit variety dominant, multi-spice waiting its turn, and the texture and structure of Grand Cru status. Get in the queue to buy this, don't worry about the price.

James Halliday – Australian Wine CompanionMount Mary Pinot Noir doesn’t quite burst from the blocks in the way of most modern Yarra Valley pinot noir, but it’s proven to be eminently age worthy. Out of interest, there are over 30 different clones of pinot noir growing in the Mount Mary vineyard, the pinot noir taken as cuttings in the early 1970s.
If ever there was an example of the classic Mount Mary pinot noir style, then this is it. It’s powerful but stand-offish, somewhat aristocratic in its fruit and oak handling, offers a firm grip of tannin and feels built to evolve slowly. It can be consumed and enjoyed now, most certainly, but its best is long ahead of it. It has an imposing beauty.

None of your sweet and sour fruit profile here, that I see in many a local Pinot Noir. Raspberry, cherry, strawberry, cedar and spice, fennel and mushrooms, roses too. Medium-bodied, at best, fresh red fruits, bright acidity, plenty of flavour, with graphite tannin keeping it long, firm and tense. Finish is perfumed, kind of autumnal, and very long with that beautiful tannin cleaning it up so nicely. It has reach, and personality. In short, it’s very good. I really like it. A lot. James Halliday – Australian Wine Companion
An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
