Can't say we're the biggest fans of Tormore's style, which tends to be fairly simple and middle-weight, however there have been exceptions (almost always from indies). For added interest, Cooper's Choice have finished this one in an Amontillado Sherry cask, releasing 396 bottles at 50% ABV without chill filtration. 2023 John Duval Entity ShirazBarossa, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$46. 99Bottle$563.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2026-2034)ABV: 14.5%Closure: StelvinA plush, yet quite refined Barossa Shiraz.
With nearly 30 years spent making Penfolds Grange and developing the RWT label at Penfolds, John Duval qualifies as one of Australia's living wine legends. In 2003 he launched John Duval Wines and wasted no time sourcing some of South Australia's finest fruit. “After 35 years in the business, I know who the best growers are,” comments Duval. Today, John is joined by his son Tim who assists with both winemaking and marketing.
Fruit was sourced from old vineyards in the Krondorf, Tanunda, Marananga, Ebenezer, Moppa and Eden Valley districts, the final blend being made from 65% Barossa Valley and 35% Eden Valley fruit. Maturation took place in French oak (25% new) for a period of 15 months.

Dark plum, liquorice and blackberry scents waft through the olfactory senses followed by some blueberry, spicy vanillin cedar, subtle dark chocolate, fennel and peppered earth notes. Rich, plush and quite refined in its flow across the palate, dark plum, liquorice and ripe blueberry fruits meld into a spicy vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered earth back drop. Fine grained tannins with good underlying freshness to the elegant finish that shows good length.

A wonderfully pure-smelling shiraz from John Duval from grapes sourced across a number of Barossan subregions – Krondorf, Marananga, Ebenezer, Moppa and Eden Valley. There is a real plushness to the fruit here; all juicy doris plum, blueberry and boysenberry with hints of licorice, violets, roasting meats, citrus blossom and earth. The silty tannins drift way back in the fruit this year and the finish is long and graceful, with the real spotlight on that fruit purity. Drink by 2040.

Ileach Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLAND$84. 99Bottle$1019.88 DozenABV: 40%Pronounced "Eee-luhk", this independently bottled, budget-friendly and intensely peated Islay single malt of undisclosed origin is rumoured to be from Lagavulin or Bowmore. Others say it's young Kilchoman due to its mix of sweetness and peatiness that's reminiscent of a light Sanaig. Whatever the provenance, the price is right for an everyday Islay dram. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Nose: young, raw peat, with quite some mercurochrome, band aids, gouache paint, iodine and sea water. Islay alright. Pears and lemons on a second plan. Rhubarb. Whiffs of kitchen herbs and burnt grass. Mouth: a big blast of peat smoke again, with lots of young, malty notes. Wet wool and lemons. Hints of tequila and barley sugar. Briney notes and liquorice. Limited complexity but no flaws. Finish: medium long, on ashes, sweet smoke and young malty notes. From the nose and taste, my guess would be Kilchoman. On the other hand, that’s about the only distillery of which I’ve tasted 5 year-olds (which would be my guess for the age of this whisky). I don’t know what a 5 year-old Lagavulin is like, so you never know. It’s very decent and especially interesting when you’re taking the price into account. - whiskynotes.be

The level of bang for buck here is ludicrous. One of Australia's more complex, exciting textural white wines lays in the glass. Catch it in its youth for the crystalline texture, the sea spray, green almond, Pink Lady apple juice characters, citrus blossom lift, cool, slate-like mineral finish and rush of slippery texture that feels glassy as it does gently sticky. An impressive wine of detail in fruit, florals, minerality and yet one that holds attention for high-end drinkability, too. Drink by 2032.

Mike Bennie - James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionIt’s probably a long running joke how much I dislike Chenin Blanc, aside from that time, quite recently in fact, I was served a bottle of Thibaud Boudignon Anjou 2023, blind, and loved it and thought it might be a frisky Chardonnay. Aside that, still usually a high barf level for me. That being said, Corymbia make a good fist of it. I drink a fair bit of pandan leaf tea, also bancha twig tea (Kukicha) and Proper Strong Yorkshire Tea. I’m a tea man over coffee. Proper wine people, I think, are tea people. You can’t really trust coffee people. Also, mainly, they come from Melbourne.
Green pear, apple, a smoky almond thing, a bit saline, also some chamomile and green tea perfume. It’s crisp, has excellent texture, a quiet pear skin and almond grip, some Parmesan rind savoury stuff, with a bright, nutty and juicy finish of very good length offering a powdery grip to close. Very good. Also, quite refreshing. I think maybe the best release of this wine to date?

Gary Walsh – The Wine FrontThe 2025 Chenin Blanc is waxy and textural, lithe and fresh. Like so many Chenin Blancs, it is certain not to show its dimensional complexity for several years yet, though drinking it so early in its life gives us a great indication as to the direction it will take in the future. So, aromatically, the wine leads with brine and white flowers, cheesecloth, green apple and cold tea. On the palate, the wine's production rises to the fore. Extended time on the lees and the inclusion of old/neutral French oak enhance the structure and texture of the wine, both of which remain steadfastly invisible, which is a wonderful thing. The 2025 season was warm and dry but saw none of the prolonged heat that was present in the previous 2024 season. As a result, the 2025 wines have been exceptional, particularly those that come from healthy vineyards—as this has—that were able to use the winter of 2024 for reprieve and much needed rest. 12.8% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2026-2040.
The dry-grown, organic certified Corymbia vineyard—Rocket's vineyard—is situated in Upper Swan, with a dramatic view of the Darling Scarp beyond. The vineyard was planted by Rob Mann and his father, Tony Mann (a.k.a. Rocket), in 1992 on Houghton loam soils. The Chenin Blanc vines are a massal selection called the Eric Noack selection, planted at a density of 1,540 vines per hectare. The wine has 12.8% alcohol, a pH of 3.33 and 6.3 grams per liter of total acidity.

100% nebbiolo from the east-facing Kersbook vineyard. It boasts a magnificent watermelon hue, the intensity not by chance. The grapes underwent an 18-hour soak to yield this level of extraction. It smells of Royal Gala apples and grilled yellow peaches. Some fleshy apricot, rose and dried herbs, thyme and bay. Magnificent texture here, the result of a providential decision made by winemaker Matt Large to leave the juice on lees in barrel for 12 months. It grips and steers, lending a spine of spice through the breadth of its billowy fruit. Serious rosato – outside the scope of assumption. Drink by 2028.

Fermented and matured in stainless, wood and amphora. A light, bright colour. Another aromatic gris from Lethbridge with its aromas of pear, honey and spice. It's ripe and flavourful on the palate, but the key here is just how bright the acidity is, keeping this delicious wine balanced and fresh. Drink now and over the next two to three years.

The Glenturret 2024 Release Triple Wood Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 44%Readers may recall Glenturret's 2022 Triple Wood which was rated 99 points and judged the world's top single malt Scotch whisky at the 2023 International Wines and Spirits Competition. Other reviews... Glenturret’s flagship, named for its aging in three different casks: American oak, European oak (both sherry seasoned), and bourbon. Spearmint, earthiness, and warehouse floor start this off on the nose. The palate is smoothly textured, with flavors of baked apricot, pepper spice, vanilla, and wine-soaked oak. The finish offers baked peach and apricot, chocolate, banana, and vanilla cream. Deep, richly flavored, and in great balance. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com
...surpassed my expectations, which is good. Maybe it also says something about my thoughts on Glenturret, a distillery I like but generally don't hold in the highest regard. Either way, the Glenturret Triple Wood certainly is just a that – a nice coalescence of three different wood types. - wordsofwhisky.com

Certified biodynamic; 10% whole bunches, matured in new and used French oak barriques and puncheons for two years. The winemaker chose to release the 2019 before the 2018. A smart decision, given the upfront appeal of the '19. The '18 offers a darker intensity but boasts a similar beautiful balance. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc that shows a mid-term evolution of the ***** thought process. Here you'll discover twiggy bark, blackberries and rhubarb stems. Some graphite and pencil shaving, dark chocolate and espresso. Plums and lilac unfurl in the middle of your palate with some chewy, fine-grained tannins. How, in this economy, can one release such a wine for this price? It's beyond generous and an absolute steal. A long length of flavour; a wine for steak (rib-eye in particular). Never Never Distilling Co. Oyster Shell Gin (700ml)South Australia, AUSTRALIA$84. 99Bottle$1019.88 DozenABV: 42%Other reviews... Oyster shells in spirit do not impart much flavour; instead, they bring a beautiful, fresh cream mouthfeel to the table. Playing into the maritime nature of oysters, Never Never employed the use of coastal botanicals to help get the feel of what an oyster-shell gin would taste like. The nose delivers great wafts of fresh lime scent on the backdrop of a subtle slate achieved through aromatic coastal herbs. The palate itself stays true to the classic gin profile, juniper still leads the charge with wisps of fresh citrus and salt coming through, oily waxflower, and the oyster shells are showcased here in their rich texture, juxtaposing the bright flavours. Notes of sharper fresh pine needles and hints of deeper coastal plants allude to an intriguing and mystifying finish. 93 points - Jess Clayfield, winecompanion.com

Mon Dieu, not Bowmore! Don’t tell me they’ve done that dreadful ‘Claret’ thing from twenty-five years ago all over again! Colour: gold – no pinkish hues, thank goodness. Nose: pata negra ham with redcurrant jelly, patchouli, bay leaf, and the usual saline Bowmore peat. In any case, it's not the calamity we had feared so far, at least for the moment. Mouth: they’ve shown a bit of tact here, it doesn’t burst into red fruit jelly sweets, and even the blackcurrants and cherries have been kept in check. No real clashes to speak of, just that odd sweet-and-savoury pudding note which remains a little baffling. Increasing amounts of crushed peppercorns too. Finish: fairly long, teetering on that tightrope between saline peat and the red fruits from Bordeaux – assuming it really is red Bordeaux, of course... Comments: at this rate, one wouldn’t mind knowing which vintage went into the wine casks, since in Bordeaux, vintages can be wildly different from one another. That would make sense, wouldn’t it? Anyway, this is far from a disaster. 83 points - whiskyfun.com

Rattray Cask Collection Invergordon 18 Year Old Cask Strength Single Grain Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 54%The Bourbon hogshead has done a good job of adding weight and 'malty' presence to the grain. Punctuating the spirit heat and oak spices are notes of biscuity malt, unripe pineapple and muted apple.
