Milhoc Le Premier-ne Single Grain French Whisky (700ml)
Better known for his Armagnacs, Denis Lesgourgue's foray into whisky started in 2021 using Chateau de Laubade's column still. 'Milhoc' (pronounced Mi-Yoc) is a single grain expression made from 54% corn, the remainder malted barley. Maturation employs a selection of French and American oak, ex-Armagnac and ex-Bourbon barrels, ageing for between 4 and 5 years. While corn-heavy, the style is reported to be less sweet than traditional American equivalents, offering a well-rounded whisky with toasted notes of citrus, vanilla and sweet spices. Bottled at 45% without chill filtration.
Other reviews... The nose is bright and zippy, with aromas of lemon peel, lemon pound cake, a dollop of honey, and a faint soapy note. The palate is light but not thin, with lovely baking spices, café au lait, black pepper, and semi-sweet chocolate. Coffee intensifies on the finish, as does the peppery spice. 89 points - whiskyadvocate.com
