2020 Produttori del Barbaresco Rio Sordo Riserva BarbarescoPiedmont, ITALY$190. 00Bottle$2280.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkNot far from the Tanaro River lies Rio Sordo, in the southern part of the Barbaresco village. The light limestone soil with relatively low calcium content (compared to other areas of Barbaresco) produces wines where tannins are never dominant, instead they show a silky quality on the palate that makes them extremely attractive and seductive, never imposing and always elegant. Behind the smooth elegance however, lies a core of powerful structure and very well balanced tannins that give to the Rio Sordo its complexity and longevity.
Other Reviews...
The Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo comes from an area that is further removed from the Tanaro River and has southwestern exposures. It shows a typical profile for Nebbiolo with rich fruit, a velvety mouthfeel and textural volume that is delivered with ample blackberry, blackcurrant and spice. The character of this wine is generous and rich. There is plenty of meat on these bones. Drink 2026-2050.

Monica Larner - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo is pretty closed today, which is probably a very good sign for its aging prospects, as this site tends to produce wines that are more open than this. Dark cherry, plum, leather, incense and tobacco offer a decidedly somber expression of Rio Sordo. The 2020 clearly needs time. Drink 2025-2035.

Antonio Galloni - VinousThe nose of the 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo is quite expressive and spiced, showing very nicely with ripe aromas of wild raspberries, cherries, fresh herbs, and blood orange spice. The palate gains in intensity, with good energy and a mineral drive. A very successful wine in this vintage, it’s going to have plenty of life over the next 15-20 years. 13,333 bottles were produced. Drink 2025-2045.

Nc'nean Organic Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 46%Founded in 2017 by Annabel Thomas, Nc’nean is located within the Drimnin Estate on a remote west Highland peninsula with spectacular views over Mull and Tobermory. The name is an abbreviation of 'Neachneohain', which translates as 'Queen of Spirits' from Gaelic. Like Ardnamurchan, an innovative and eco-friendly approach is at the heart of the distillery and its team. 2021 may well be one of the most significant in its early history: It was the year Nc'nean became the UK’s first distillery to gain Net Zero status with carbon dioxide emissions as close to zero as possible - twenty years ahead of the Scotch industry target. They're certified organic, powered by 100% renewable energy and recycle 99.97% of their waste. The whisky is also bottled in 100% recycled glass and is vegan friendly. Batches of around 5000 units are bottled at 46% and are both non chill-filtered and natural in colour.
Other reviews... [Batch 18 tasted / circa 2022] Right, bad luck, it's 2/3 ex-STRised red wine, now STR doesn't obligatorily make the whiskies winey, it often doesn't in my experience, so there is hope… Colour: straw. Nose: indeed, no obvious wine, but there are berries, probably rather elder, also peach syrup and orange blossom honey. Some Californian IPA. Well, a style of beer that was to be found in California back in the days, but the whole world seems to be making this style today. Then a little sweet bread and some vanilla. Fine, soft, fruity, with also quite some hay. Mouth: very sweet, clearly 'flavoured'. Szechuan pepper, tangerine, oranges, hay wine, the usual cinnamon and ginger, some herbal teas (rooibos, peach leaves), vanilla and zests... Finish: medium, sweet, with more citrus, which always works, I think. Comments: clearly fruitier than the only earlier batch I've tried, which was #7. Pretty 'modern world', very cask-driven, certainly well made. 82 points - whiskyfun.com

Glengyle Distillery Kilkerran Heavily Peated Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Batch 11Campbeltown, SCOTLAND$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 57.9%Even though this is a NAS release, you can expect Glengyle's whisky-making team are refining their blending skills and introducing older material into each batch. So it makes sense that some tasters are describing this as one of the best, if not the best batch in the series to date. Drawn from 90% Bourbon casks with the remainder out of Sherry, complexity will be a strong point. The Kilkerran style we've come to know and love includes notes of key lime pie, toasted rye bread and peat smoke, toasted marshmallows and campfire embers with hints of vanilla and custard - and of course, that Campbeltown smokiness carrying through to the finish, along with a mineral note to round things off. Even after dilution, these natural strength expressions can remain beautifully fresh. If you're partial to the uber-peaty, invigorating coastal blast that comes with Longrow at its finest, this will be for you. In line with previous releases, Batch 11 weighs in at 57.9% Alc./Vol and comes bottled non-chill filtered.
Other reviews... A true experience for the senses – powerfully peppery, with a comforting sweetness and the unmistakable Campbeltown DNA. The combination of intense glow, fruity freshness, and creamy depth makes this a whisky that shows character without being overpowering. Those who love strong smoke but also appreciate subtle nuances will find this a reliable companion in their glass. - whiskybase.com
Another great batch from this series! They are always top quality, but this one is one of the better ones! - whiskybase.com
...Both batch 9 (WF 86) and batch 10 (WF 85) were excellent, though perhaps ever so slightly immature, a tad on the rough side for my taste, but let’s admit it, we were nitpicking. Colour: straw. Nose: it’s the 16-year-old, only younger, livelier, and above all far more medicinal. With gallons of iodine tincture and mercurochrome, sea water and a splash of lemon balm infusion, one could almost use this as a balm, an anaesthetic or indeed as a repellent against mosquitoes and, more crucially, midges. Well, no guarantees there. We like it. With water: well now, it rounds out and softens completely, but also brings seaweed and, above all, plenty of sage and tarragon. Worth trying in a béarnaise sauce. Mouth (neat): this slaps you twice across the face, a proper one-two. Brimming with salt, ashes, camphor, iodine tincture, lime, oysters and smoked fish. With water: a more classical peater, though still immensely salty, with notes of machine oil and even penetrating oil. Could come in handy. Finish: very long, with salt, lemon and bitter almonds. Black pepper in the aftertaste. Comments: hey, we’re moving forward! A fine beast, really. We should set up a blind tasting, twelve young Longrows versus twelve young Kilkerrans. Who do you reckon would win? - 87 points - whiskyfun.com
- Glenallachie Meikle Tòir The Sherry One 5 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 48%
"For a 5 year-old this is complex and rewarding. My favourite so far. " - whiskynotes.be
Producing peated whiskies was always in the pipeline for Master Distiller, Billy Walker. The dream is now a reality. His new series named 'Meikle Tor' (which means "Big pursuit") is a first for Glenallachie and has had a staggered release in Australia. Finally, most of the range is here, (mostly) differentiated by cask type, including The Original One, The Chinquapin One and now The Sherry One - the latter considered a high point for value. Some say it even beats Lagavulin 16 year old. Initially aged in American oak followed by PX and Oloroso Sherry puncheons for three years, the spirit is peated to 35 PPM. Walker employs a remarkably long 160-hour fermentation and uses mainland peat from St. Fergus (think Ardmore), imbuing a sweet and smoky profile. Production takes place for around six weeks per year. The whisky is bottled at 48% and is non-chill filtered, further enhancing the bang for your buck.
Other reviews... It’s that warming, soothing smoke acting as a through line for all these whiskies so far. The Sherry One is enhanced by the ex-Oloroso and ex-Pedro Ximénez puncheons. Punching above its weight. - wordsofwhisky.com
...Overall the Oloroso and PX puncheons are quite balanced and the peat is big enough to keep the upper hand. For a 5 year-old this is complex and rewarding. My favourite so far. - whiskynotes.be
Aged in a mix of oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry puncheons. The nose is dusty and dark with baking cocoa and fresh brewed coffee. A lift of citrus – blood orange and eventually sticky marmalade – arrives with time in the glass, but it never gets much beyond those dark roasted notes, all of which are accentuated by smoldering smoke and mild incense. The palate starts out lush with dark berries and treacle but dries out a little on the midpalate with notes of char and walnut skins before settling into a warm balance on a generous finish of fig jam, silky milk chocolate, and candied orange peel. - drinkhacker.com
- Marionette Amaretto Liqueur (500ml)AUSTRALIA$59. 99Bottle$719.88 DozenABV: 25%
Almonds from the Keen family's lush biodynamic orchards on the Murray, macerated with a lick of golden syrup and a dash of salt are at the heart of Marionette's Amaretto. A marzipan character from Goulburn Valley apricot kernels, held over from Marionette Apricot Brandy and Muscat from Australia's fortified-wine heartland of Rutherglen round out this cocktail staple. Unflocked and only lightly filtered, creating a hazy liqueur packed full of natural flavour, this Amaretto is rich and nutty with a touch of marzipan, bolstered by varietal raisin notes from the Muscat. Enjoy it in a Mai Tai, Godfather, or Amaretto Sour, or try using it as a substitute for orgeat in cocktails. 25% Alc./Vol.

The Macallan Rare Cask Batch No.1 continued with the new look that debuted in 2018. Each limited release batch represents the volume of only fifty hand-selected sherry butts, these being a combination of sherry seasoned American and European oak casks - a high proportion of them first fill. The result is an unmistakably woody whisky with a rich hue. 43% alc./vol. -

2021 Brand's Laira Blockers Cabernet SauvignonCoonawarra, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$18. 99Bottle$227.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 6 Years (2025-2031)ABV: 14%Closure: StelvinEstablished by Captain Stentiford in 1893 the Laira Vineyards was purchased by Eric Brand and his wife Nancy in 1950. Throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s they sold their fruit to larger wineries before releasing the first Brand's Laira wine in 1966. Eric and his sons continued to produce wine at Brand’s Laira until 1994 when the McWilliam’s family purchased the property. Casella wines now own the vineyard.
Rich, beautifully fleshed and refined, this is a prime example of Coonawarra Cabernet.
Outstanding colour saturation featuring an impenetrable inky black core and a near equally deep dark red black hue. Streaming out of the glass are delightful blackcurrant, mulberry and vanillin cedar aromas which are complimented by some tobacco, subtle earthy black olive and bay leaf notes. Rich blackcurrant and mulberry fruits flow effortlessly across the mid weighted palate with subtle dark chocolate, vanillin cedar, earthy tobacco and spicy bay leaf accents lending further nuance. Seamless tannin integration concluding long and refined.

From three sandy sites, two planted in the '70s and one the late '90s; 14% whole bunch in the final blend; matured in French barrels (12% new) and a 2600L foudre. This is the most aromatic and lifted of the triad of single-site syrah in this range, which is unsurprising given the sandy soils. It doesn’t lack for depth and intensity though, the fruits simply more red, blurring a little into black, the structure tautly tensioned, the finale pleasingly brisk. Sour plum and cherry, tart blackberry, clove and pepper, struck rock, iron and black tea. It’s a lovely expression, just starting to suggest some tertiary perfume, which promises to build appealingly. It’s very good. Drink by 2035.

Marcus Ellis – James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionAn impressive nose of blackberries, dried kelp, violets and licorice. The structure is a taut coil, like a spring contracting and expanding across gritty, detailed tannins melded to saline acidity. Iodine reduction, nicely handled. Full-weighted but detailed and classy. Drinkable now, but best from 2027. Screw cap.

2011 Dalgety Glen Moray Small Batch 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$134. 99Bottle$1619.88 DozenABV: 52.5%Another fruit salad Glen Moray, in the best possible way, no doubt partly due to the the fact that refill hogsheads have been used. These were combined and married in a butt for a couple of months before bottling. Hannah considers Glen Moray one of the most underrated whiskeys on the market, an opinion backed up by this simply delicious malt. Textural and mouth watering with fruit confectionary and vanilla flavours that are borderline lush, fine tannins and acids relieve what could have fallen flat in the wrong cask type. Nicely done. 683 bottles at 52.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... A range from Hannah Whisky Merchants. A simple refill hogshead such as this one should be perfect. Colour: white wine. Nose: one is reminded of icing sugar, lime zest, broken tree branches, cactus, green apple... All of this, we like. With water: damp chalk and raw wool stand out, along with a bit of porridge, grist, damp peat with also a hint of eucalyptus... Nothing to fault, it's really perfect, of great purity. Mouth (neat): very citrusy and on green apple, extremely lively, with a bit of green pepper and a hint of fruit candy, like lemon and grapefruit. Perfect tension, very refreshing. With water: and there you have it, the texture thickens, there's limoncello, pink pepper, crème de menthe, anise, and a tiny touch of chilli. Finish: long, fresh, lemony, and minty. Comments: when people speak of desert island drams they mention old Lagavulins or Laphroaigs from the 1960s. In reality, it's this kind of Glen Moray that would be more appropriate. But in a double-magnum. 87 points - whiskyfun.com
Notes from the bottlers... Director Gregor Hannah and Brand Ambassador Paul Mckendrick carefully hand select casks from their extensive portfolio to create this unique and harmonious small batch single malt whisky. A classic example, fully matured in a pair of refill hogsheads for 12 years allowing the soft and gentle, vanilla and honeyed nature of this make to shine through. Tasting revealed - pecan, honey, caramel wafer, white grape, black pepper and walnut.

Matured for 11 months in new French and American oak puncheons. Super saturated inky black heart with an equally deep black dark red hue – about as densely coloured as a wine can get. Rich, mouth coating ripe morello cherry, liquorice and dark plum flavours are framed by vibrant acidity and muscular tannins. Spicy vanillin oak, earth and blueberry elements linger underneath. Otherwise, concentrated, nippy and a little tannic. Attractive touches of dry triple sec lift the finish, the aftertaste flattening with caramel and milk chocolate in tow. 261 bottles at 58.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Notes from the bottlers... A light bodied distillate and a fairly modern style of Speyside whisky where the vast majority of output is destined for blends, we rescued this cask from mediocrity. More than 3 year finish in our famous oloroso cask sourced from Hidalgo cooperage in Spain has offered the spirit a softer side of ex-sherry with more of a toffee and caramel character rather than the expected Christmas cake and dried fruit notes. At the time of writing, we're up to Batch 84 in the series. This historical bottling goes way back (circa 2011). The dark colour looks like some older sherry casks made it to the mixing vat. One to collect or set aside for a special occasion. 60.4% Alc./Vol.Each batch of Abunadh varies in proof and flavour as proportions of older or younger material make the cut, but the brief remains the same: Make a 100% ex-oloroso sherry aged malt using the inventory at hand (anywhere from 5 to 25 years old). Keep it natural, which means zero chill filtration, keep it balanced and keep it affordable. No information about the number of bottles from each batch of A’bunadh is offered, but they're large outturns for a global community, which makes for a significant blending challenge. That hasn't stopped collectors and fans of sherried malts from stocking up on those that are deemed better than others.

A single-vineyard wine planted with MV6 and Abel clones in the late '90s; 20% whole bunches. A bright crimson. Elegant and restrained with aromas of red cherry, rose petals and spices such as Sichuan pepper and star anise together with a little new-oak pencil-shaving scents. The palate is similarly elegant and fine boned and I like the way this keeps building as it sits in the glass. The tannins are superfine and persistent. The most reticent, perhaps, of the five single-vineyard wines but a wine that will no doubt age superbly. Drink by 2032.

A new release in the Max & Me quiver, which is sourced from a 'very famous' 150-plus-year-old vineyard east of Springton. I'm pretty sure Phil is referring to the Stonegarden vineyard, which many of the Barossa's top producers use as a source of amazing fruit. Vivid and zesty with impressively pure plum and red berry fruits, a plume of gingery spice and hints of cola, citrus blossom and red licorice. Great velocity and chalky tannin grip all add up to a great little first run for this new wine. Very nice! Drink by 2030.

There’s texture and flavour here but it’s the drive through the finish that really elevates the pulse. This chardonnay really does power on. Unwinding in the glass with notes of cassis, plums, pencil shavings and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and impressively concentrated, with a taut but nicely integrated profile, concluding with a pure, penetrating finish.

2024 Chateau Figeac Pre-Arrival OfferSaint Emilion, Bordeaux, FRANCE$320. 00Bottle$3840.00 DozenClosure: CorkPositively ancient in wine terms, Chateau Figeac has a history of grape growing going back to Roman times. Once a large estate of 200 hectares, various divisions over the years, most notably selling the parcel that would become Chateau Cheval Blanc, the estate now covers 37 hectares and is planted to 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc, and 30% Merlot. The high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon is rare on the Right Bank, and owes to the soil being a mainly fine gravel base, and the resultant wine requires at least mid-term cellaring to soften.
Other Reviews....
The 2024 Figeac is a lovely classic, wafting from the glass with aromas of blackcurrants, minty berries, licorice and pencil shavings, deftly framed by new oak. Medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, with good depth at the core, powdery tannins and a suave, seamless profile, it's a blend of 33% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Franc and 39% Cabernet Sauvignon that attained 12.7% alcohol. Figeac was one of those estates that took the risk of waiting to harvest, rejecting just over 20% of the crop in the sorting process to produce a compelling wine despite the challenging conditions.
93-95 points
William Kelley - Wine AdvocateSilky and aromatic, with velvety tannins, the 2024 Figeac is sublime. Floral and savory aromatics meld into a core of blue/purplish fruit, spice, licorice, lavender and menthol. All the elements are so well balanced. The blend is 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Franc, with 8% press wines. Not surprisingly, the 2024 is a very Cabernet-driven Figeac. Production is 60,000 bottles, or 50% of normal, because of low yields and further selection in the cellar. Tasted two times. Drink 2034-2054.

Antonio Galloni - VinousBased on 33% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Franc, and 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2024 Château Figeac reveals a classic Figeac nose of ripe blue fruits, sappy tobacco, flowers, and graphite. Medium to full-bodied, it has a fabulous, seamless mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, beautiful balance, and a great finish. To have this level of quality in a vintage like 2024 is mind-blowing, and this is one of the top handful of wines in the vintage.

Jeb DunnuckGorgeous fragrance on the nose, dark chocolate, milk chocolate and black cherries, floral roses and iris - you can really smell the Cabernet Franc. Lovely intensity of fruit with such freshness from the start. A burst of acidity and zingy red fruit which then transforms into a soft and creamy mid palate before turning more mineral and crisp on the finish. Really a lovely journey from start to end. Well proportioned, not a light wine. This has a touch of chew with cooling minty liquorice aspects. It’s elegant, leaning into the vintage in terms of density, but wow there is such delicacy and detail here. I love it because it’s so relaxed and so charming and full of fruit. The energy and buzz is just exceptional. I could drink this all day! 8% press wine. 3.66pH. Drink 2032 - 2046.

Other reviews... [Batch 2 tasted] This one is full sherry finished. Colour: orangey amber. Nose: a notable gear shift, this is much creamier and displays a more velvety smokiness. Resinous hardwoods, smoked teas, verbena, eucalyptus, tea tree oil and smoked meats. The sherry sits behind the peat and doesn't feel too jarring, it's rather more about wood spice and peat smoke together I would say. With water: softer spice tones, coal dust, bonfire embers and this impression of medicinal herbs. Mouth: a similarly easy arrival, all on soft wood spices, smoked teas, sweet peat smoke, natural tars, wood resins, putty and aniseed. More impressions of herbal cough syrups and things like hessian and wormwood. I like it a lot but it strays very close to being a little too wood-dominant for me. With water: not too sure with water, I think it loses a little definition and the alignment between peat and wood goes slightly awry. There's still plenty of sooty and peaty 'oomph' about it though. Finish: rather long, all menthol tobaccos, bitter herbal extracts, spices, liquorice and tar. Comments: this one veers about quite a lot. Lots of emphatic, peaty pleasures to be had, but for me the wood is a tad too much here. However if you enjoy this rather creamy, spicy modern wood-forward style then you'll probably have a blast. Quite clever wee concoctions these Seaweed things, I would say. 86 points - whiskyfun.com
Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Oatcakes, vegetal peat, hot Ribena, assorted BBQ meats, molasses, clove-studded orange, and just a hint of chocolate mousse. Palate: Cinder toffee, cinnamon, peat still shining through, a slow build of red grape and jammy raisin, with some citrus lift. A subtle touch of singed hay later on. Finish Meaty malt returns, with warm oak in support. The red grape tannins continue and last on the finish. Overall: A top expression that shows what can happen when peat and sherry meet without clashing against each other.

2023 Lowestoft Estate ChardonnayTasmania, AUSTRALIA$67. 99Bottle$815.88 DozenABV: 13%Closure: StelvinLowestoft is one of Tasmania’s most exciting producers, home to some of the region’s oldest vines, planted in 1986 just outside Hobart. Since Kiwi-born Liam McElhinney took the reins in 2020, the estate’s reputation has soared—most notably with La Maison Pinot Noir, which took out the prestigious Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy in 2023. With mature vines, precision winemaking and growing acclaim, Lowestoft is fast becoming a producer to watch in Tasmanian wine.
Sourced from 78% Tasman Peninsula and 22% East Coast fruit, the 2023 Chardonnay was hand-picked, chilled, and whole-bunch pressed to seasoned 300L French oak. Wild fermented with solids, the wine was handled in two parts—half sulphured post-ferment, half stirred on lees without SO₂ for three months—before 9 months’ maturation and blending. Taut and mealy expect notes of ripe nectarine, grapefruit zest, cashew and flint, this is a Chardonnay of tension, texture, and precision.

Coal River Valley chardonnay, whole-bunch pressed into seasoned French oak (300L) for wild ferment before maturing for nine months in oak prior to blending and bottling. Pale straw, with vibrant aromas of grapefruit, white peach and nectarine cut with hints of struck-match complexity, spiced oatmeal, almond paste and riverstone. There's a lot going on here. It's like an orchestra; you can hear it as a whole but are able to delineate and pick out individual instruments, politely golf (orchestra?) clapping as you go, marvelling at the tautly stretched fruit canvas, umami-rich acid line and overall composition and drive. A cracker. Drink 2024-2034.

Dave Brookes - Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionFragrant with pomegranates, red currants, sage and hints of incense and cola candy. Plenty of voluptuous cherry fruit character, a medium to full body, satiny tannins and an abundantly fruity finish. Screw cap.

JamesSuckling.comThe Lowestoft winery has been on a roll in recent years, picking up major awards here and there.
This wine kept unfurling as I sat with it. There are layers and there are nuances. It’s an autumnal Pinot Noir, almost-but-not-quite a bit tomato leafy, with smoky/reductive characters in play too. Its style is pretty clear. But the fruit is ripe, cherried, strawberried, boysenberried even, and cedarwood oak is beautifully integrated, and there’s a minerally crackle to the tannin. In short, it feels and tastes like a class act, and one that will reward cellaring. The tannin profile itself is of note; a conduit of flavour and a magnetic, binding force, like a river or a stream, pushing and pulling as the wine flows. Drink 2026 - 2034+

The 2023 La Maison is Lowestoft’s flagship Pinot Noir and a benchmark of Tasmanian winemaking. Crafted from whole bunches and matured in 500L French oak (25% new), it builds on the legacy of last year’s Jimmy Watson-winning release. Expect a layered nose of raspberry, pomegranate and cherry blossom, followed by a palate of dense red fruits, dried herbs and subtle spice, framed by fine tannins and elegant length.

Made with 100% whole cluster, pressed directly to 500L French oak puncheons (15% new) for 13 months. There's a lot going on here – all of it good. Bright red cherry, red plum and raspberry pip tones with hints of cocoa powder, pomegranate, Chinese barbecue joint, amaro, souk-like spice, leaf litter, struck flint, XO sauce, shiitake broth and earth. Pure and spicy red fruits, fine, powdery tannins and a mineral-laden acidity that seems to pull the flavours forward on the palate, finishing long, savoury and true with everything plumb and tickety boo. Just lovely. Drink 2024-2036.
