2024 Jane Eyre Pinot NoirTasmania, AUSTRALIA$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2025-2033)ABV: 13.5%Closure: StelvinA wonderfully fresh, pure and powerful Pinot that has a long moreish red fruited finish.
Sourced from vines with an average age of 30 years old with 20% whole bunch inclusion and maturation taking place in French oak puncheons for a period of 10 months.
Semi translucent bright red to dark red colour with black shaded edges and a vibrant crimson red tinged hue. A bouquet of red cherries, violets, strawberries and subtle anise engulfs the nostrils with fresh herb, delicate forest floor and spicy cedar notes also evident. The uber delicious palate is layered with ripe red cherry, strawberry and red liquorice fruits which are both expansive and supple in their flow. Infusions of fresh herbs, forest floor and spicy cedar extend across the back half. Wonderfully fresh, pure and powerful it has velvety tannins and a long moreish red fruited finish.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

From three sites in the north; this was fermented with native yeasts, then aged in French puncheons for 10 months. The Jane Eyre signature of fragrance and clarity is here, wedded with the intensity that Tasmanian pinot can often yield. Dark fruits are joined with the red, with black and red cherries, redcurrant, rosy-pink florals, some warming spices, turned earth and sweetly fresh forest floor note that will no doubt build intriguingly with tertiary development. It’s a wine of poise and detail, the palate supple, textural and effortless. Drink by 2034.

2023 Epsilon ShirazBarossa Valley, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$23. 99Bottle$287.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 6 Years (2025-2031)ABV: 14.2%Closure: StelvinRich and succulent yet remarkably fresh with a fleshy mouth feel and long finish.
Epsilon is the project of Aaron and Julie Southern (Julie is a member of the Kalleske clan) who own vineyards in the Northern part of Barossa. As the familiar story goes with so many growers they sold off their fruit to larger wineries until a chance meeting with the Massena boys Dan Standish and Jaysen Collins. Under their guidance they convinced them to start up their own brand in 2004 and build a winery on the property. Maturation takes place for approximately 12 months in new and seasoned French and American oak with only the best batches making the final blend.
Midnight black heart with a bright dark purple hue. Fragrant dark plum, liquorice and ripe blueberry scents evolve out of the glass followed by smoky vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered meat notes. Rich and succulent yet remarkably fresh, the medium to full bodied palate is decorated with dark plum and liquorice fruits which meld into a spicy vanillin cedar, subtle blueberry, fennel and pepper back drop. Fleshy mouth feel with vibrant acidity, polished tannins and a long juicy finish.

Sourced from Yalumba’s famed Menzie’s vineyard, the name ‘Cigar’ is derived from the unique cigar like shape of Coonawarra’s famous terra rossa strip. Maturation takes place in a mix of new French oak hogsheads, barriques and Hungarian oak hogsheads and one year old American oak barriques with balance in older French, American and Hungarian oak for a period of 16 months.
Impenetrable inky black heart with a very deep dark red black tinged hue. Red to black currant, mulberry and red liquorice aromas emanate from the glass followed by some vanillin cedar, subtle earth and bay leaf notes. Rich blackcurrant, mulberry and red liquorice fruits flood the mouth carrying with them medium to full body weight. Excellent concentration and freshness with a sturdy tannin structure lending firmness to the back half. Spicy vanillin cedar, earth and bay leaf accents form across the back half. Long, well fleshed yet grippy conclusion.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.
Alc. 14%Other Reviews…..
Named for the strip of Terra Rossa soils shaped like a cigar that runs through Coonawarra. As it is with the power of suggestion, the Cigar invokes the savoury spices of tobacco, cedar and sandalwood. It's layered with bilberries, blackcurrants and prunes, too. Some coffee and poppy seed tones. It is a wine in the Yalumba line-up that stands out for its heavily laden spices and muscular tannins. Oak is significant and will allow the wine longevity in the cellar. If you gravitate to the seduction of quality fruit and richness of oak, this is for you. Drink by 2034.

A slight change of direction with Cannonball, now mainly a single-vineyard wine at 90/6/4% cabernet/malbec/merlot. This is excellent. It’s a refined, elegant style, almost pared back, with regional flavours of cassis and blackberries, menthol and eucalyptus, lightly spiced and lightly oaked (20% new mostly puncheons and aged 10 months). The tannins are superfine, the acidity light and bright, the palate fuller bodied but not weighty. All in all, a gorgeous drink. Drink by 2035.

The Estate is celebrating its 135th anniversary in 2025, a remarkable achievement, and as part of that, they have introduced a new range, their Old Vines expression (it was not as though they were short of different ranges already, but, as they say in the classics, too much of a good thing is never enough). A 57/43 blend, after basket pressing, the wine matures in French oak for a year and a half. A dark garnet/maroon hue here, with a wonderfully evocative nose. There are notes of dried herbs, aniseed, beef stock, smoked meats, blackberries, leather, aniseed and cold tea. The palate offers focus, concentration and abundant but very fine tannins. Impressive length here and the intensity never wavers from start to finish. There is a touch of vegemite on the palate and it is immediately evident that the oak is immaculately integrated. Expect this to provide pleasure for at least the next ten to twelve years, and for it to improve further during that time. Drink 2025-2037.

2014 Signatory Vintage The Un-Chillfiltered Collection Edradour 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 46%In their price bracket, these delicious Edradours are considered the best old-school sherry whiskies money can buy. Typically the culmination of 3-4 carefully selected first-fill Oloroso sherry butts, they stand as proof positive that very tasty sherry bombs are achievable at 46% ABV. And of course, the additional mouthfeel that comes from not chill filtering is the icing on the cake. If you revel in whiskies that offer classic notes like dark chocolate, red fruits, orange peel, dried plums, Christmas compote, cinnamon and cloves without paying $200+, these little gems from one of Scotland's smallest distilleries are the way to go. God bless Andrew Symington and Iain Henderson for continuing to offer value for money in this increasingly rarified Scotch whisky segment.

There’s been a single cask version or two of Fleeting, but this one is a combination of maturing whisky in two casks types. You'll need a magnifying glass at hand to read the front label, which tells us the liquids spent five years in Oloroso sherry barrels, then six years in old barrels that held fortified Pinot Noir with an outturn of 1800 bottles. Couvreur is known for pulling some stunners out of wine casks, and the very dark purple ruby colour of this bottling anticipates something special. Other reviews... Here, Craigellachie is slimmed down and appears in slightly leaner guise, with an aromatic spritz of vetiver-heavy male cologne coming across first before fresh fruits follow on. More crisp and with slightly more obvious toasted structure. Colour: light gold. Nose: it's all on hay and fruit peel, dry white beers and dry wines (old white Bordeaux) plus white/root vegetables. Stunning nutty combo in the background (walnuts, pecans, macadamia). Finish: long, salty, mustardy, manzanilla-y. Green curry sauce in the aftertaste. While Glendronach single cask whiskies haven't been explicitly discontinued, they have completely disappeared from the distillery's website. Currently the Australian market has only three lines allocated. It’s said that their rarity is due to limited output and growing demand. That situation is partly due to Glendronach's closure from 1996 to 2002 which impacted the availability of older stock. It would also explain the distillery’s recent re-focus on core range expressions that coincided with a packaging upgrade in 2024. Typically offering outturns of around 600 bottles per cask, the single barrel selections are famous for offering snapshots of a particular cask at a specific point in time making each one unique. The current imports exhibit beautiful deep mahogany colours anticipating whiskies that are layered, lush and decadent - also more intense and expressive compared to major competitors like Macallan. This shipment is an opportunity to secure some Highland classics that otherwise may never have been available in Australia.

2024 Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou Pre-Arrival OfferSaint Julien, Bordeaux, FRANCE$299. 00Bottle$3588.00 DozenClosure: CorkAs a relatively large estate in Saint-Julien, the 75 hectare Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou estate is planted to 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare. They also own a small parcel of land in Haut-Medoc. Changes in the winery, and a greater focus on parcel selection for the Grand Vin has resulted in a reduction in output from around 20,000 cases per year in the 1980’s to around 10,000 cases today. And the wines have never looked better. The pair of 2009 and 2010, along with the 2016 are considered standouts for the region, intense and concentrated efforts that will live for many years to come.
Other Reviews....
The 2024 Ducru-Beaucaillou is showing well at this stage, unfurling in the glass with a perfumed bouquet of dark berries, flowers, gentian and fresh licorice, interwoven with delicate spicy nuances. Medium to full-bodied, layered, and seamless, it is lively and refined, with somewhat firm tannins leading to a gently grippy finish. This was harvested between September 30 and October 15. Drink 2030-2044.

Yohan Castaing - Wine AdvocateThe 2024 Ducru-Beaucaillou is a sleek, elegant wine. Silky tannins give the 2024 its distinctly mid-weight, lithe personality. Readers will find a gracious Ducru built more on persistence and nervy tension than size or opulence. Blue/black fruits, lavender, cloves, menthol and chocolate open over time. It will be fascinating to see how this ages. Drink 2034-2054.

Zekun Shuai - JamesSuckling.comAs to the Grand Vin, the 2024 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is based on 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot, resting in 100% new oak. Its deep purple hue is followed by a terrific 2024 that defies the challenges of the vintage. Pure cassis, darker currants, graphite, crushed stone, and sappy violet notes all emerge on the nose. It's medium-bodied, with a beautifully layered, concentrated mid-palate, ripe yet velvety tannins, and a great finish. This classic Saint-Julien will benefit from bottle age and is another brilliant effort from the team. It's one of the richer, more structured wines in the vintage, yet it remains balanced, precise, and never overdone.

Jeb DunnuckLovely aromatics on the nose, deep vivid purple. Floral scents and lots of Cabernet markers, dried mint, clove, aniseed and blackcurrants. Cool and crunchy straight away, this has a gorgeous smooth texture with ripe and concentrated fruit. I like this, it feels restrained and not overdone with a silky fruit profile and firm but fine tannins. There's a softness to this and a long length with a push of flavour. Offering up aromas of jammy berries and toasty oak, the 2024 Léoville Poyferré is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Medium-bodied, dense and blocky, it's firm, tannic and chewy, with some green characteristics vying with its creamy patina of new wood. Harvest took place between 24 September and 10 October, and some lots saw some reverse osmosis.
89-91 points
William Kelley - Wine AdvocateThe 2024 Léoville-Poyferré was picked from September 24 to October 10 at 26.42 hl/ha. There was some reverse osmosis on the Merlot and Cabernet Franc varieties. Quasi-Pauillac in style, it offers quite backward black fruit, hints of melted tar and graphite on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied and quite succulent with fleshy ripe tannins, tobacco-laced black fruit, brown spices and light undergrowth. With a fine supple landing on the finish in typical "LP" fashion, this constitutes a delicious, early-drinking Poyferré that will be more approachable than other vintages. Drink 2028-2050.

Neal Martin - VinousA bit closed and almost steely at the moment. At the same time, there is depth and huge structure, showing black cherries, mulberries, fine spices and violets. Full-bodied, this has heaps of very small-grained, dusty tannins on the palate and a long finish. A concentrated wine. Wait and see.

Zekun Shuai - JamesSuckling.comLooking at the Grand Vin, the 2024 Château Léoville Poyferré is based on 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It shows deep purple hues and classic notes of cassis, lead pencil, graphite, crushed stone, and violets. Pure, polished, and elegant on the palate, it has perfectly ripe tannins and plays in the forward, charming style of the vintage while still delivering plenty of depth and richness. It's aging in 80% new French oak for 18 to 20 months.

Arlett Pineau Des Charentes Cask Finish Single Malt French Whisky (700ml)FRANCE$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 48%While Arlett offer several wood-finished variants, this edition offers something out of the ordinary for whisky drinkers. It's appropriate that the Tessendier brothers selected their local apéritif as the support here, as they are firstly producers of premium Cognac. Just a few months in x-Pineau des Charentes casks has added secondary notes of dried apricots, wild honey and cinnamon to the cereal character of the whisky. The flavours complement the malt, becoming better defined and juicier through the finish. A higher ABV gives the palate more presence without adding heat or prickle, and there's also lovely sweet-dry balance. The most impressive finishing in the lineup, if Pineau des Charentes is your thing, this is your dram. 48% Alc./Vol.

Loaded Barrel Butterscotch Single Malt Australian Whisky Liqueur (500ml)Melbourne, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$58. 99Bottle$707.88 DozenABV: 22%Loaded Barrel's latest offering sees natural butterscotch flavours blended with their four-year-old single malt. The result may not be as complex as traditional Scotch Whisky liqueurs, but it avoids the intense sweetness of butterscotch schnapps. Shaken well before tasting (as per the producer's recommendation), the nose feels moderated by the base spirit. It's sweet, with tooth-coating butterscotch and milk chocolate flavours, yet it retains a lightness that allows the sugars to 'breathe', extending the palate length and avoiding the clunky, cloying character typical of the category. A one-trick-pony, but in the context of dessert liqueurs, this is a success. Even if you don't have a sweet tooth, one taste shouldn't be out of the question. 22% Alc./Vol.

Park VS Carte Blanche Cognac (700ml)Cognac, FRANCE$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 40%Cognac Park is the premier brand from Distillerie Tessendier, a Borderies-based house established in 1880. Today, fourth-generation brothers and Master Blenders, Lilian and Jérôme Tessendier run the show. Not limited to blending, they also distill from their own 60 hectare estate and buy around 40,000 hectoliters from winemakers, maintaining relationships that span several generations. The entry-level VS is a 50/50 marriage of Fins Bois and Petite Champagne cognacs aged for a minimum of three years, but most of it is closer to six. The goal was to create an "energetic Cognac" that grants bartenders 'carte blanche’ to use it as they wish in cocktails, however, it feels like what they’ve made here would be quickly lost in mixing. Tasting it on its own is essential. The first pass elicits pure, floral-soft aromatics, coaxing out scents of ripe pears, apricots and citrus blossom. That soft touch is echoed on the palate which is restrained, elegant and less overtly fruity than many a VS, also impeccably pure. Dried fruits, poached quince, dry triple sec and lingering wisps of passionfruit in the lengthy rebound make this very classy, understated VS seem out of place in its classification. Highly recommended. 40% Alc./Vol. Tasted from 50ml sample.
Notes from the producers... Menthol, linden blossom, apricot, banana, pear, ginger, dried fruits, pepper (pink), lychee, orange zest, and white flowers.

2024 Chateau Haut-Brion Pre-Arrival OfferPessac Leognan, Bordeaux, FRANCE$775. 00Bottle$9300.00 DozenClosure: CorkLong before the 1855 classification of Bordeaux, Chateau Haut-Brion were renowned for their quality and style. When Thomas Jefferson visited the region in 1787 he noted the quality of wines in the area, creating his own hierarchy that listed Chateau Haut-Brion along with Chateau Latour, Chateau Margaux, and Chateau Lafite and the finest wines of Bordeaux. This same elite group were later given First Growth status, and Haut-Brion remains the only estate outside of the Medoc to claim this honour. Located near the city of Bordeaux, the 48 hectare Chateau Haut-Brion vineyard is planted to 48% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot for the reds, while the whites are a mix of 51% Semillon and 49% Sauvignon Blanc.
Other Reviews....
The 2024 Haut-Brion is more perfumed than La Mission Haut-Brion, unfurling in the glass with aromas of raspberries, cassis, dark berries and spices mingled with elegantly floral touches. Medium to full-bodied, layered and sappy, it has a firm texture and powdery tannins, leading to a long, spicy and lead pencil-inflected finish. Composed of 47.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37.5% Merlot and 15.3% Cabernet Franc, this vintage features one of the highest proportions of Cabernet Franc in recent years—comparable to vintages such as 1993, 2004, 2010, 2011 and 2020—and should gain harmony with the élevage. In the context of the vintage, this is a notable success, owing in large part to Haut-Brion’s intramural position in Pessac, where the estate’s terroir benefits from slightly warmer average temperatures than properties located outside the city, contributing to more complete ripening of the grapes. Drink 2028-2044.
93-95 points
Yohan Castaing - Wine AdvocateThe 2024 Haut-Brion is dark and brooding in demeanor, but obviously not as tannic or forbidding as it can be in the early going. All the Haut-Brion signatures are very much present, but they're portrayed in a decidedly understated style that speaks to the personality of the year. Black fruit, scorched earth, spice, tobacco and leather build with time in the glass. The 2024 is a super-classy Haut-Brion. There's gorgeous substance here. Drink 2034-2054.
94-96 points
Antonio Galloni - VinousThis year, the style of Haut Brion shows through with transparency, beautiful balance and precision. Fine austerity, with excellent minerality, dark olives and red and dark berries. Structured on the mid-palate. Beautiful depth for the vintage, with really fine-grained tannins and a lengthy finish that lingers. So much vibrancy and finesse. A classic vintage.
97-98 points
Zekun Shuai - JamesSuckling.comI wouldn't be surprised to see the 2024 Château Haut-Brion be the wine of the vintage, and while it's not going to make you forget any of the recent truly great releases, it has more depth, suppleness, and charm than the vast majority of wines in the vintage. Ripe blackcurrants, scorched earth, graphite, crushed stone, and violets all define the aromatics, and it has nicely integrated oak, a layered, ripe, seamless mouthfeel, and building tannins. It's a beautiful, layered, elegant Haut-Brion.

2024 Chateau Leoville Las Cases Pre-Arrival OfferSaint Julien, Bordeaux, FRANCE$320. 00Bottle$3840.00 DozenClosure: CorkChateau Leoville Las Cases is one of the larger classified estates in Bordeaux, with the Second Growth Saint-Julien property totalling 98 hectares. Winemaking is very traditional, using old oak vats for fermentation, and up to 90% new French oak for maturation. While the wines can look rather austere in their youth, from great years they can resemble some of the finest First Growth wines as they reach maturity. The Chateau also produces a second wine, Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases (from 2009), which is not to be confused with Clos du Marquis, a wine that is always produced from a separate parcel and is considered a standalone brand.
Other Reviews....
One of the wines of the vintage, and certainly one that's likely to number among the longest-lived, is the 2024 Léoville Las Cases, a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot that attained 13.1% alcohol. Unwinding in the glass with a pure, intense bouquet of cassis, violets and pencil shavings, it's medium to full-bodied, with terrific mid-palate density and concentration but also a seamless integration of tannin and acidity that's especially rare this year, concluding with a long, penetrating finish. Jean-Hubert Delon observes that the 2024 shares "the aromas and flavors of the 1986," defined by Cabernet Sauvignon ripened at the end of the growing season, though of course the 2024, lacking the huge power and structure of that vintage, is much more amiable than the 1986.
93-95 points
William Kelley - Wine AdvocateThe 2024 Léoville Las-Cases is gorgeous. All the Las-Cases signatures are present, just dialed down a touch. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, grilled herbs, graphite and menthol are all beautifully delineated. The 2024 is distinguished by its precision and total class. Time in the glass brings out the wine's intensely floral, spice-inflected aromatics. Brisk acids and bracing mineral notes wrap it all together in style. I can't wait to taste this from bottle. Drink 2034-2054.
94-96 points
Antonio Galloni - VinousComplex, refined and truly mineral, this has natural vibrancy and freshness as well as excellent depth. Light midpalate concentration but also no sweetness at all. Medium- to full-bodied with chalky, stony tannins and a long, very tense finish. A vintage of delicacy and finesse. If you seek less alcohol and less power, this will be a great year to buy. 84% cabernet sauvignon, 11% cabernet franc and 5% merlot.
97-98 points
Zekun Shuai - JamesSuckling.comThe 2024 Château Léoville Las Cases is another incredibly classy wine from this team. It's a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Merlot, coming in at 13.1% natural alcohol and aging in 75% new barrels. Cassis, spicy oak, graphite, and tobacco all emerge on the nose, and it's medium-bodied on the palate, with a focused, elegant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and the notable yet integrated acidity that marks the vintage. Complete and layered, this elegant Las Cases brings to mind the great vintages of the 1980s and 1990s. It will benefit from just a few years in bottle, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it evolve for decades.

2024 Chateau Cos d'Estournel Pre-Arrival OfferSaint Estephe, Bordeaux, FRANCE$280. 00Bottle$3360.00 DozenClosure: CorkChateau Cos d’Estournel have made great strides in the recent past, and their new winemaking facility is one of the most impressive and purpose driven in the area. All movement of wine from the moment grapes arrive is done via gravity, a process involving a style of wine elevator to raise and lower tanks, and one that removes the use of pumps entirely. While the wines from this Second Growth property have been patchy throughout their history, it’s no secret that they have been on fire over the last 15 years, producing rich, concentrated, and potentially very long lived wines warranting perfect scores for numerous wine critics.
Other Reviews....
The 2024 Cos d'Estournel is shaping up beautifully. Offering up aromas of sweet cassis, plums, pencil shavings and iris, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and suave, reflecting this estate's pivot to a more harmonious, less aggressively extracted style. With a layered, seamless core of fruit framed by plenty of sweet, powdery tannin, it's a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 1.5% Cabernet Franc and 0.5% Petit Verdot that checks in at 12.7% alcohol. Cos is an early-ripening terroir, and that clearly played to the relative strengths of the vintage. Harvest here began with the estate's old-vine Merlot on gravel on September 23, concluding with the last Cabernet Sauvignon on October 7.
93-95 points
William Kelley - Wine AdvocateThe 2024 Cos d'Estournel could very well be one of the wines of the vintage. Bright and vibrant in the glass, with tons of energy, the 2024 impresses with its vertical structure, depth and overall balance. Blue/purplish fruit, spice, new leather, lavender and mocha are beautifully delineated throughout. The 2024 is super-classic. The modest 12.8% alcohol is notable, especially because that also means there is less extraction of wood. Cos is one of my early favorites in 2024. Drink 2034-2054.
95-98 points
Antonio Galloni - VinousThere is huge depth and lots of intensity from this year's Cos. Quite powerful, deeply colored and dense, but there is freshness. Concentrated and tight-grained, with a full body and a pretty lengthy finish. Quite unique for its broadness and density, with lots of blackberries in the finish.
96-97 points
Zekun Shuai - JamesSuckling.comThe 2024 Château Cos D'Estournel is a clear step up, with a concentrated, rich, yet still elegant profile. Cassis, graphite, crushed stone, and freshly sharpened pencil notes all define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a focused, structured mouthfeel, good acidity, and building tannins. It's going to require patience but is clearly an outstanding Cos in the making. Based on 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 1.5% Cabernet Franc, and a splash of Petit Verdot, resting in 50% new oak, it hit 12.76% with a pH of 3.57 and an IPT of 71.
93-95 points
Jeb DunnuckWonderful fragrance coming out of the glass, perfumed notes with cedar, cherry and chocolate. Juicy, sweetly chewy and grippy, this has so much personality straight away with such density in the mouth for the vintage but so well controlled. Great intensity and follow through with a direct line but not too lean at all. Freshness is there but ripeness is too so you have a great combination of structure and focus. Precise and refined but utterly joyful too. It keeps a straight line towards the finish, narrowing with cola, liquorice and slate but this will grow over ageing. Wonderful, a great effort. 13% press. 0.5% Petit Verdot completes the blend. Ageing 50% new barrels. 3.57pH. A yield of 30hl/ha. Kept organic status. Drink 2032-2050.

2024 Chateau Giscours Pre-Arrival OfferMargaux, Bordeaux, FRANCE$125. 00Bottle$1500.00 DozenClosure: CorkChateau Giscours in Margaux has been making wine in the region as far back at the 1300’s, but it’s only recently that they’ve earned a reputation for outstanding wines. Extensive replanting of the vineyards and a change in composition to include more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend has resulted in wines truly reflective of the appellation. Another technology pioneer in the region, Chateau Giscours was one of the first to use gravity to move wine in the cellars. While this practice is common now, it was unique in the 1800’s. They were also one of the first to use optical sorting of the grapes, another common tool used more widely today.
Other Reviews....
The 2024 Giscours has turned out very well indeed. Offering up incipiently complex aromas of dark berries and cherries mingled with orange zest, licorice, violets and burning embers, it's medium to full-bodied, with good density and richness, with a layered, rather muscular palate and a long, expansive finish. The 2024 is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. The estate retained cover crops to amplify the dry conditions in July and August, accelerating ripening, and once again picked by vine age within blocks, bringing in the younger-vine fruit earlier before it could rot. Merlot came in between 19 and 28 September, and the Cabernet Sauvignon was picked very late, between 1 and 11 October.
93-95 points
William Kelley - Wine AdvocateThe 2024 Giscours is impressive. Elegant and sleek, with fine balance, Giscours is all class. The bouquet alone is so enticing. Small red berry fruit, spice, tobacco, mint and cedar are all finely sketched in a mid-weight, nervy Giscours that is quite showy right out of the gate. There is a bit of edginess in the tannins, but that's not anything that can't be addressed with élevage. A closing burst of aromatics leaves a long-lasting impression. Tasted three times. Drink 2032-2044.
93-95 points
Antonio Galloni - VinousA fresh and vivid red, showing blackcurrants, herbs and hints of needles and dried flowers. Medium-bodied. Nicely chewy tannins extend to the medium-long finish, which is bright, firm and linear. A Giscours that shows the elegance and balance of the vintage. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 31% merlot, 6% cabernet franc and 3% petit verdot.
94-95 points
James SucklingBased on 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot, the 2024 Château Giscours offers beautiful darker currants, cassis, and violets intermixed with classy oak notes. Medium-bodied and nicely concentrated on the palate, it offers elegant tannins, beautiful balance, and impressive length. The harvest was very late here, and it shows in the depth and concentration of the wine.

Dried herbs, mint, salty stones, tobacco and some dried spices. Well built with a sense of character. 3% Petit Verdot completes the blend. Ageing 50% new oak barrels. 3.71pH. Tasted three times. 2024 Chateau Canon Pre-Arrival OfferSaint Emilion, Bordeaux, FRANCE$240. 00Bottle$2880.00 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
The 2024 Canon is shaping up brilliantly, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet cherries, blackberries and raspberries mingled with notions of rose petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with tangy acids (the pH is a very low 3.35) and ultrarefined tannins, it concludes with a long, mineral finish. A blend of 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc, it's the estate's first year of organic certification.
93-95 points
William Kelley - Wine AdvocateThe 2024 Canon is superb. One of the standouts of the vintage, the 2024 possesses striking mid-palate depth to match its vertical personality. Chalk, white pepper, mint, lavender, rose petal, slate and blue/purplish fruit all stain the palate. There's gorgeous depth and density here, and yet the 2024 remains a super-classic wine from the property. This is a real stunner. That's all there is to it. Tasted four times. Drink 2034-2059.
95-97 points
Antonio Galloni - VinousStructured, balanced and textured, it has aromas of red berries and pine needles. It’s medium-bodied with velvety tannins. Rather seamless. Long, juicy finish with salty limestone undertones.
95-96 points
James SucklingThe Grand Vin 2024 Château Canon is 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc that will spend 16-18 months in 49% new oak, with a small amount in foudre. Black raspberries, graphite, crushed stone, and violet notes all define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied, fresh, has a vibrant, layered mouthfeel, and a great finish. It's a classic Canon with its minerality, focused, elegant mouthfeel, and outstanding length. Tasted multiple times with consistent results.
94-96 points
Jeb DunnuckBeautiful fragrance on the nose, really alive and forward, roses, purple flowers and red berry fruit. Lifted and intense with a real push of cherry and strawberry fruit. So clean, pure, lively and tangy, the acidity and fruit is really at the fore here. Tannins are almost subtle, gently giving frame while the minerality adds an extra layer of complexity on the finish. I love this because it’s playful, really not serious, harmonious and full of flavour. Juicy, alive and mouthwatering. Such a great wine and one where you really can't taste the difficulties of the year in the glass. Crystalline and pure, elegant and super charming. Ageing 49% new oak barrels, 6% foudres for 16 to 18 months. 3.35pH.A yield of 45hl/ha. Drink 2030 - 2045.

William Kelley - Wine AdvocateThe 2024 Rauzan-Ségla is magnificent. One of the top wines of the Left Bank, Rauzan-Ségla possesses tremendous textural density and mind-blowing balance. At this stage, Rauzan-Ségla is one of the wines of the vintage in Bordeaux. Elegant yet powerful, the 2024 is simply magnificent. Tasted four times. Drink 2043-2054.

Antonio Galloni - VinousA juicy, fruity wine with lovely berry and cherry aromas. Bright and vibrant, with a medium body and lightly chewy tannins. Supple in the middle, with a firm, medium-long finish. 63.5% cabernet sauvignon, 34% merlot, 2% petit verdot and 0.5% cabernet franc.

Zekun Shuai - JamesSuckling.comThe Grand Vin 2024 Château Rauzan-Ségla checks in as 63.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, and a splash of Cabernet Franc, with the élevage spanning 18 months in 50% new oak. It brings another level of density as well as finesse. Ripe black cherries, cassis, graphite, spring flowers, and beautifully integrated oak all define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied, with solid mid-palate depth, ripe tannins, and outstanding length.

Jeb DunnuckCherry stone on the nose, rose, violet, strawberry and red cherry. Chewy and well textured, filling but gentle, the tannins are exceptional and the freshness is so well balanced with the fruit. So sophisticated, confident, smooth and utterly compelling. I love it, round, soft with lifted acidity that gives the tang with some liquorice on the finish. Energy and focus with real succulence. Still not a big wine, but this has plenty of style and refinement and a feeling of happiness about it. 0.5% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. Ageing 50% new barrels for 18 months. 55% production. 3.7pH. Drink 2032-2049.

2024 Chateau Pavie Macquin Pre-Arrival OfferSaint Emilion, Bordeaux, FRANCE$125. 00Bottle$1500.00 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
The 2024 Pavie Macquin offers up attractive aromas of raspberries, violets, rose petals and spices, framed by a discreet 45% new oak. Medium to full-bodied, ample and pure, it's built around a tangy, somewhat assertive spine of acidity that lends this wine an angular, edgy profile. Of course, that may integrate with additional élevage.
88-90 points
William Kelley - Wine AdvocateThe 2024 Pavie Macquin is positively gorgeous. Silky, layered and voluptuous, the 2024 is so impressive right out of the gate. Plush contours wrap around a core of purplish fruit, lavender, licorice, spice, menthol and chocolate. All the signatures of this site come through loud and clear. Savory and floral notes supported by clean veins of salinity extend the persistent finish. Pavie Macquin shows what was possible in 2024. The choice to harvest everything in October (from the 3rd to the 8th) paid off big time. Aging is in French oak, with about 15% in larger 500-liter barrels, 45% new wood overall. Tasted three times. Drink 2034-2054.

Antonio Galloni - VinousWhat a bright, racy wine showing beautiful chalky tannins and mid-palate fruit of good density. Minerally, with blue and red fruit. Taut on the palate, with a medium to full body supported by tense, chalky tannins. The long and really succulent finish goes on for a while. Precise. 84% merlot, 15% cabernet franc and 1% cabernet sauvignon.
96-97 points
Zekun Shuai - JamesSuckling.comIncorporating slightly less Cabernet Franc than usual, the 2024 Château Pavie Macquin checks in as 84% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, resting in 40% new barrels, with 10% in larger barrels. It has a classic Pavie Macquin nose of dark cherries, cassis, graphite, and spring flowers, with a subtle, cooler-toned edge that always seems to come through from this terroir. This carries to a medium-bodied Saint-Émilion with a focused, nicely structured, balanced mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and juicy acidity that carries through the finish. It's a beautiful, vibrant 2024 and one of the few in the vintage that's going to really benefit from bottle age. Tasted multiple times with consistent results.

Itinerant Spirits Gallivanter Wild Botanical Gin (700ml)Ballarat, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$74. 99Bottle$899.88 DozenABV: 42%Weighs in at just above 40% ABV but delivers a generous gin bouquet of mixed citrus, dried herbs (tarragon, sage?) followed by crushed pine buds and bush pepper. Creamy, accessible entry develops to a medium to full bodied middle, repeating those piney-juniper accents with spikes of pepper and a vibrant lemon-thyme finish. Lots of personality on its own, this should equally lend itself to mixing. 42% Alc./Vol. Batch #5 tasted.
Notes from the producers... A juniper-forward gin with big citrus hits of creamy lemon, mandarin, and grapefruit up front are rounded out with aromatic pepper. Fresh citrus notes from the inclusion of Lemon Drop Wax foraged from the Grampians region is balanced with sweetness and warm spice, giving this gin a well-rounded mouthfeel and smooth after taste.
- Itinerant Spirits Vansetter All-Grain Vodka (700ml)Ballarat, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$64. 99Bottle$779.88 DozenABV: 40%
Vansetter Vodka's all-grain foundation is a harmonious blend of malted wheat, barley and rye, grown locally in the Mallee and Wimmera regions of Western Victoria, and malted in Ballarat by Joe White Maltings. The Vodka is then cut back with volcanic water from Black Mount Springwater at Millbrook. The style manages a delicate balance between bright candied notes and the richness of the grains. 40% Alc./Vol.
- Ron Santiago De Cuba Carta Blanca Rum (700ml)CUBA$72. 99Bottle$875.88 DozenABV: 38%
Until now, the Cuban rum category in Australia has been limited to Havana Club. Santiago de Cuba breaks the drought with three new lines. Named after the city of Santiago and boasting over 160 years of distilling experience, Cuba Ron's rum making tradition is unrivalled on the island. Their portfolio starts with the Carta Blanca, a three year old spirit intended primarily as a mixer, offering a balance of a light sweetness with a dry finish. 38% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... A typically characterful Cuban light rum with pleasing grassy, vanilla and leathery notes. 4.5 stars - diffordsguide.com
...Despite the plus points to this rum I still feel that overall it is all just a little bit to light and to clean. The only real evidence of “rum” comes in the finish which is slightly leathery with a note of tobacco. I really enjoy more fruity white rums such as Chairman’s Reserve White Label and Appleton Special. This is probably handy for a bartender needing a more easy going rum. From my perspective though it is very average. 2 Stars - thefatrumpirate.com

- Ron Santiago De Cuba 11 Year Anejo Old Rum (700ml)CUBA$124. 99Bottle$1499.88 DozenABV: 40%
A big age statement for Cuban Rum, Ron Santiago's Extra Añejo 11 year old blends the sweetness of sugarcane molasses grown in the Oriente province in the South East of the island with the skillful touch of the Maestros del Ron Cubano. Aged in white oak, there's a nice balance of mature notes including estery tropical fruits, coconut, delicate vanilla and almond, with the sweetness perfectly balanced by moderate spices. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... If you are looking to explore the “lighter” side of rum. I would recommend this as a sipper. It’s quite easy going but at the same time has enough going on to remain interesting. The balance of this rum is really good... Sure this works great in things like an Old Fashioned but I think its best enjoyed on its own. 4 stars - the fatrumpirate.com

2022 Il Marroneto Ignaccio Rosso di MontalcinoTuscany, ITALY$135. 00Bottle$1620.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkIl Marroneto produce some of the purest and most perfumed expressions of Sangiovese made anywhere. Part of the secret lies in their prime location within Brunello's traditional top class territory, situated at 450m above sea level with a cool northern exposure. Combined with the much lauded talents of gifted winemaker Alessandro Mori, and it's clear to see why Il Marroneto are so highly coveted by Brunello fans worldwide.
Alessandro Mori has always adopted a traditional approach, aiming for elegance and purity, without sacrificing depth or impact in his wines. Organic practices have been used in the vineyards since 1988, while natural fermentation occurs and there is neither fining nor filtration before bottling.
Other Reviews....
Alessandro Mori did not have a Rosso vineyard, so he cobbled together vines from declassified Brunello and leased land (measuring 7,000 square meters) to provide the fruit for this wine. The Il Marroneto 2022 Rosso di Montalcino Ignaccio is underlined by brightness and freshness with forest berry fruits, blue flower and navel orange. Harvest in 2022 started early on September 20th, compared to September 24th in 2020 and much later in 2019 on October 5th. Drink 2025-2038.

Monica Larner - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2022 Rosso di Montalcino Ignaccio is exotic with a seductive blend of spiced blood orange, wild strawberries, rose petals and a dusting of spice. Juicy and vividly fresh, it sweeps across the palate with ripe raspberry and cherry-berry fruits while taking on a coating of chalky minerality toward the close. Sour citrus enlivens the experience as this finishes long and staining yet still remarkably fresh. The mouth waters for more under an air of violet inner florals. Simply spellbinding. This is already a total pleasure, yet it has the balance for short-term cellaring. Due to the changes in the Rosso di Montalcino regulations, Il Marroneto will be able to use another hectare, originally planted for IGT Sangiovese, in their Rosso in the coming vintages, which means more of this glorious juice to go around. Drink 2024-2032.

James SucklingA really perfumed, floral expression of Sangiovese, with plenty of lavender, violet and garrigue. Grippy and dusty tannins clamp the palate, with the promise of some delicious juiciness in time. Sturdy yet finessed, earthy wild berries and pomegranate mingle with bitter herbs and spice, then a fresh, saline finish with glimpses of spice and blood orange. Drink 2025-2030.

Alessandro Mori makes two Rosso di Montalcino wines, and the difference between them comes down to the selection of barrels used in the final blend. The Il Marroneto 2022 Rosso di Montalcino Iacopo has a special story because Alessandro asked his son Iacopo to choose the one barrel that becomes this wine. That process was initiated in 2019 and has been the impetus for this wine ever since. With that first vintage, Iacopo selected a barrel with a slightly darker-colored wine, lots of blackcurrant intensity and a textural profile that veers more toward Brunello than it does Rosso. He has looked to re-create those characteristics in all the vintages to follow. This is a ramped-up expression of Sangiovese with energy, youthful fruit, cassis and blood orange. Drink 2025-2038.

Monica Larner - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateDeeply complex, the 2022 Rosso di Montalcino Iacopo wafts up with a cascade of rose petals, incense, cinnamon sticks, spiced citrus rinds and dried black cherries. This is silken in texture with depths of dark red berry fruits that saturate, underscored by saline minerals and spice, all guided by a core of brilliant acidity. The 2022 finishes with tremendous length and a crunchy feel, leaving gripping tannins that tug at the palate. This truly deserves the title of Baby Brunello. What an absolutely stunning wine. The Iacopo is produced from one declassified barrel of Brunello fruit. Drink 2026-2034.

James SucklingA cask selection made by Alessandro's son, Iacopo, who says it ‘aims for the complexity and depth of a Brunello’. It shows more amplitude than Ignaccio, with depths of dark cherry fruit with some earth, spice and cream, and peaks of really bright and zesty blood orange, and floral overtones. Lovely freshness and impressive complexity. Drink 2026-2034.

The Il Marroneto 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is a wine of special depth and elegance. Alessandro Mori tells me that fermentation in 2020 proceeded nicely with what he describes as a "primordial stew" of grape must, resulting in high pressure "geysers" or "liquid bombs" that rip right through the cap because of pressure build-up. Someone is having tons of fun in the winery. High temperatures (between 36 to 38 degrees Celsius) serve to fix the wine's ruby color and the elegance of its perfumes, which are more floral than fruity. At the end of fermentation, he manages the skins with light wetting by hand with a tube. This vintage offers softness and a silky texture that feels glossy to the palate. Drink 2026-2048.

Monica Larner - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is an understated beauty, slowly emerging with a delicate blend of rose petals, fresh mint, crushed rocks and vividly ripe black cherries. It hovers across the palate, lifted and finessed yet spry, with ripe red berry fruits and hints of lavender, taking on a liquid floral concentration toward the close. Pleasantly chewy and long, the 2020 leaves the senses stained in primary concentration, with a tinge of bitter cranberry and pretty inner florals that resonate over a bed of classically dry tannins. This is a more concentrated and intense yet wonderfully balanced rendition of Il Marroneto's Brunello. Drink 2028-2038.

Eric Guido - VinousA restrained wine that’s complex and deep, with aromas of cherry stones, butter, fresh violets, orange peel and prunes. Firm tannins with a grainy texture, yet it has a sweet finish, super-energetic acidity and a full body. Flavors of blood oranges and violets. Perfect balance and incredible aging potential. A super classic. Drink or hold.

James Suckling‘I'd never seen the green [of the vegetation] like that before’, remarks Alessandro Mori of 2020, putting the vibrancy of the colour down to less pollution as the population remained in their homes. Calling 2020 an easy vintage, much like 2016, the estate now practices accapamento – a ‘wall’ of leaves which act to shade the bunches and also take up some resources, causing the vine to struggle slightly more. There's great freshness here, with coiled potency of vibrant plum and sour and dark cherry at the ripe core. A lick of salinity and a brush of wood accompany silky tannins. One of very few 2020s I have tasted which may be an improvement on the stunning 2019s. Time will tell. Drink 2026-2040.
