2025 Pewsey Vale Estate Single Vineyard Riesling
    Eden Valley, South Australia, AUSTRALIA
    $22. 99
    Bottle
    $275.88 Dozen
    Cellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2025-2033)
    ABV: 11.5%
    Closure: Stelvin

In 1839, shortly after his arrival from England, Joseph Gilbert started building a fine homestead in Eden Valley and planted the region’s first grapevines in 1847. Like so many vineyards in the 1920s and 30s, Pewsey Vale fell into disuse but, thankfully, its potential was rediscovered.
In 1961, pastoralist Geoffrey Angas Parsons became aware his property had once incorporated the region’s earliest vineyard and shared his discovery with good friend, and vigneron Wyndham Hill-Smith. Hill-Smith needed no further persuasion – work soon began on re-establishing Pewsey Vale Vineyard. Initially, 56 hectares of Riesling were planted in contoured rows. The several remaining hectares of these vines continue to provide fruit for The Contours Riesling. All plantings at Pewsey Vale Vineyard are propagated from the original 1847 vines.

Classic Pewsey Vale Riesling at the top of it’s game.

Brilliant very pale straw almost water like colour with green tinted edges. Intense lime, citrus and orange rind aromas jump out of the glass trailed by distinct chalky talc, green apple and mineral notes. Scrumptious lime and citrus fruits fill the mouth carrying with them plenty of textural volume. Crunchy acidity with orange rind, green apple, chalky talc and subtle steely mineral elements lining the back half. The finish, long and racy.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.
    Alc. 11.5%

    Other Reviews….
What a beautiful example of Eden Valley Riesling is this estate Pewsey Vale wine. The nose is intense lemon with a minerally bath salts character, while the palate has that lemon rind edginess, balancing the deeply intense, linear and focused fruit that emerges from this high-altitude block. It retains a degree of tension with a slightly talcy character, and the finish is long and fine. Excellent wine. Drink 2025-2037.

Salmon pink tinged blush with tangy acidity and a dry, refreshing finish.

Salmon pink tinged colour. Nosing offers up aromas of pear, Jonathan apple and subtle quince followed by a delicate whiff of Turkish delight and spice. Making a well rounded entrance onto the palate are flavours of pear, red apple and quince. Tangy acidity with some blood orange and spice elements lingering underneath. Brimming with energy it has a dry, refreshing finish.
Drink over the next 2-3 years.

From two plots – one picked early with the later seeing more skin contact. A pale, bright cured salmon colour. Delicately perfumed with its aromas of red apple, cranberry, orange zest and a touch of rose petal. Mouth-filling and flavoursome, this finishes with a touch of tannin on the satisfying and long finish. You'd be hard pushed to find a better gris than this at the price. Drink by 2029.

Phillip Rich - James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion

The best Pinot Gris in Australia is also the best value. That was the line that came to mind when I first tasted this wine. I’d have to go back through my records to see if this wine is actually my favourite Australian gris but fair to say a) that it’s right up there and b) that it’s an absolute ripper. All for 26 bucks. It has a copper-pink blush to its colour, it has genuine mouthfeel and/or texture, it delivers flavour in an easy-going way and yet it’s all straightened up by well-judged acidity. It also runs long through the finish. I don’t rave about gris too often. I’m raving about this one. I even suspect that it will be a better drink again in a year or two.

A little sash on the label annotates ‘Whole Bunch Fermented’, and so away we go.
A pretty pink-orange hue, delicate as a wine but with good grip and light chalky pucker. Rose water, rose hip tea, pomegranate juice and a big squish of red-skinned pear and light juniper berry notes. Delicious. It’s a distinctly textural wine but attractively cool and fine boned. An elevated expression from the variety in a restrained way. Drink 2025-2029.

Floral and expressive, opening with lifted aromatics and a savory nuance. The palate is textural and rounded, supported by a balanced phenolic grip and a bright line of acidity, giving structure and a three-dimensional feel with a saline edge. Shows great nerve and personality, finishing with a copper tinge. Drink now. Screw top.

Nantou Distillery Omar Orange Brandy Barrel Finish Cask Strength Single Malt Taiwanese Whisky (700ml)
    TAIWAN
    $480. 00
    Bottle
    $5760.00 Dozen
    ABV: 54%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured.

Nantou Distillery’s Omar (stylised OMAR) single malts come from a long-standing Taiwanese winery turned craft distillery: the Nantou winery operation dates back to the late 1970s, and the distillery began producing single-malt spirit under the OMAR name in the late 2000s, blending traditional Scotch-style production with Taiwan’s tropical terroir and winemaking experience. This particular release is a cask-strength expression finished in orange-brandy barrels, a deliberately unusual finishing choice that layers concentrated citrus and brandy-liqueur character onto the distillery’s malt base and is presented as part of OMAR’s “cask strength/liqueur finish” series. Bottled at around mid-50s ABV and released in limited runs (several thousand bottles in the 2021/2022 releases), they are non chill-filtered, with natural colour. Expect a pronounced orange/mandarin brightness and an almost orange-syrup or marmalade sweetness underpinned by vanilla, biscuit malt, light baking spices and a touch of hazelnut or clay-like earth; the finish brings lingering candied citrus and syrupy brandy warmth.

Understated in it’s power and beautifully shaped with a long refined finish.

Wild fermented with 11 months maturation in French oak (18% new) and full malolactic fermentation. Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Pear, white peach and dried honey aromas drift through the nostrils followed by some citrusy nougat and faint spicy cashew notes. Beautifully shaped, the mid weighted palate features fleshy white peach, pear and dried honey flavours over biscuity nougat, cashew and spice elements which stretch out across the back half. Understated in it’s power it shows ample freshness throughout the long, refined finish.

Another excellent release from Marco Lubiana. Delicate, refined aromas of sliced lemons, crushed stones, flint, nectarines, white peaches and grapefruit. The palate is vibrant with racy acidity, the high-tension mouthfeel hinting at the underlying power that will unravel with time. The sky is the limit for this label. Drink or hold.

Derwent Valley. All estate fruit. All biodynamic. All good.
Soft and slippery, medium weight and energetic, minerally style of chardonnay. Crisp edges, plush core, stone fruit, ginger-lemon tea, a dash of white pepper, some nougat and vanilla cream gently settles in too. Finishes with fennel and a bit of peppery herbs. Good extension of flavour, excellent flow, very elegant as a comment. Excellent. Drink 2025-2033.

From newer plantings at the top of the estate vineyard.
Very spicy, savoury, juicy and quite dusty at the same time. Fine, lacy tannins shape things well. Dark cherry, crunchy red currants, toasty cinnamon, some bitter herbs and a touch of dark chocolate. Serious feeling wine, tense and firm; reserved and for the long term. Very good. Drink 2025-2033.

So much so, that he partnered with Destiladora de Los Altos (NOM 1412) to found his own brand (the distillery is well-known as the founders of Bacardi-owned Cazadores). Created from 100% Blue Weber agaves and rested five months in ex-American oak bourbon barrels, El Arquero's Reposado appeals to those looking for an easy-drinking tequila with a balance of vanilla, caramel and toasted oak flavours combined with the crisp notes of fresh agave. Good enough for sipping neat, or for creating refined cocktails. 38% Alc./Vol.

    UNITED STATES
    $114. 99
    Bottle
    $1379.88 Dozen
    ABV: 47.5%

This NAS bottling is reportedly a 4-6 year old whiskey made using sourced liquid from MGP in Indiana. The four grain mashbill delivers a soft and sweet sip contrasted with a touch of pleasing spice. 47.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Made from a mashbill of 74% corn, 16% wheat, 7% rye, and 3% malted barley, the nose on this one is alluringly sweet, with powdered sugar, candy corn, toasted marshmallow, and Golden Grahams floating from the glass. This has great body; the palate retains that sugary sweetness, then boosts it with vanilla pastry cream, mocha latte, and more sweet grain notes. The finish keeps a good thing going with vanilla, delicate malt, and baking spice at the fore. (Release date: 1/25) 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com

This is amazing value. A delicious Barossa Shiraz with some significant cellar time and hailing from one of the great vintages, for under fifty bucks? Jump on this – you will not regret it. The wine has an inky, dark magenta/purple colour. The time in the cellar has undoubtedly helped. This is richly flavoured, dense and dancing, with notes of chocolate, mocha, coffee beans and licorice. This is very generous, beautifully balanced, seamless and with very good length, and it is also exhibiting early complexity. The tannins and soft and powdery. Love it. Another ten years of pleasure at least, ahead of it. Drink 2025-2035.

Tyrconnell Sherry Cask 10 Year Old Single Malt Irish Whiskey (700ml)
    Riverstown, Dundalk, IRELAND

    Bottle
    $1919.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Located on the Cooley Peninsula in County Louth, Cooley is Ireland's only independent Irish owned distillery. Converted in 1987 from an older potato alcohol plant by John Teeling and other investors, Cooley only distils their whiskey twice, not three times, as is the norm for many other Irish producers. They employ two copper pot stills with large necks, which according to the distillery, increases the time it takes for spirits to pass through. The result is a 'more refined and milder' whiskey.

The Cooley Company has won over 300 medals since opening. Other awards they have received include "European Distiller of the Year" in 2008 and 2009 and "Distillery of the Year" in 2008 from the International Wine and Spirit Competition, and "Distillery of the Year" in 2010 from Malt Advocate magazine.

Once owned by the Watts family, the historic Tyrconnell label (named after a successful racehorse) was originally a best-selling brand in the United States before Prohibition. This 10 year old was finished for two years in sherry casks. The whiskey pours a bright gold with a pale straw hue. The aromas place it immediately in the sherry mould, yielding up pure and rich dried fruit notes accompanied by vanilla, Bounty bar and hints of cinnamon. There's more of the same on the palate with a medium dry flavour wave of vanilla, juicy dried fruits and a forgivable trace of sulphur. Turns to ginger biscuit and spice towards the finish which is vibrant and clean. A delightful sherry infusion that leaves the malt shining through. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... On the nose there are warm, grassy tones wrapped in a blanket of sherry, apple, and sultanas, with a tickle of fine white pepper, lemongrass, scented balms, and poppy seed cake. In the mouth there is apple, cherry, and honey nougat, backed by richer sherry fruits. The flavor develops steadily, with late additions of pepper coinciding with a confluence of sweetness and sherry notes. Baked apple sweetness on the finish. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com

InchDairnie Distillery KinGlassie RAW 8 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Fife, SCOTLAND
    $184. 99
    Bottle
    $2219.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46.3%

Avid Scotch-watchers may notice the packaging here looks very similar to RyeLaw (a single grain whisky made with Scottish-grown rye, launched in 2023). That's because they're from the same distillery. This marks one of two inaugural single malt releases, the other being a Double Matured 8 Year Old. KinGlassie Raw is expected to be an annual limited edition with a peated barley spec of 50ppm (the same as most Kilchoman, for example, and higher than most Islays). The distillery says this release has a "smouldering fireplace" quality. You certainly get the sweet peat character up front - of the mellow, sultry kind, infusing crisp baked apples and light vanillas. On the palate, the effect recalls some young Octomores. Peat never quite rises to the expectations of the phenol spec, nevertheless, the mouthfeel radiates the aura of a profound, end-of-the-night dram, abundant with oily, bitter dark chocolate complexities to roll around the tongue. 2025 batch tasted. Bottled unchill-filtered at 46.3% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Nose: Raw indeed, but not brash. The malt forward nature of the distillery’s new make is evident (husks and mash), accompanied by a pleasant sweetness (almost honey-esque), hints of silage, hessian and subtle lemon drizzle cake as well as granny smith. The smoky notes are more campfire-esque than coastal, let alone medicinal. Definitely some vanilla foam blocks as well. Taste: Mouthfeel, I don’t know. Slightly underwhelming initially, but water unlocks a pleasant creaminess. This is malty with a hint of sponge cake, then also moderately ashy, somewhat brackish and with a touch of red apple. Also smoked citrus fruits, and there’s a pinch of pepper in the background. Finish: Medium length. A tad dry while sweet malty notes linger, as well hints as smoked husks. This whisky speaks to the confidence InchDairnie has in its spirit. Almost as if they went looking for the least inactive casks in their warehouses. A good nosing whisky that could do with some more complexity on the palate, but certainly a quality malt overall. - wordsofwhisky.com

Penelope is relatively new on the Bourbon landscape, having been created in 2018 by lifelong friends, Mike Paladini and Danny Polise. The name is a nod to Mike’s daughter. MGP has recently bought the brand out. The entry-level bourbon is a blend of wheat and rye mashbills, aged separately before blending and bottling. Maturation takes place in barrels charred with #4 staves and #2 heads. Current batches are aged longer than the original product - a minimum four years as opposed to two, and despite the base-level ABV, the whiskey comes bottled non-chill-filtered - unusual for Bourbon. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The aroma presents as spiced and sweet, reminiscent of a liqueur. The palate is light, showing allspice, chamomile and ginger, with a fleeting white floral note and hint of cedar. What's in the bottle is a four-grain Bourbon (corn, rye, wheat, malted barley) distilled in Indiana, aged about two years, bottled in Kentucky, and named for the founder's daughter. 89 points - wineenthusiast.com

[Batch #2 tasted 2020] The nose offers cherry, raspberry tart, dried orange slices, butterscotch, black pepper, and antique closet. ...There’s no denying that this is a young bourbon as its youth is present throughout. With little distinguishing traits, long time bourbon drinkers will most likely walk away indifferent to Penelope Bourbon. That said, this bourbon seems to be aimed squarely at those new to the world of whiskey, specifically from their choice of marketing as an under 100 calorie pour, to using a wheated bourbon to soften its flavor profile. The end result though is exactly the type of whiskey I’d pour for someone looking to try bourbon for the first time. It’s a light, easy sipper that will make those new to bourbon realize that yes, bourbon can be an approachable spirit that is enjoyable to drink neat or on the rocks. 2019 tasting - breakingbourbon.com

Notes from the producers... Aroma: Balanced corn sweetness, caramel, light oak, syrup, dynamic aroma profile with slight savory notes. Body: Fruit, syrup, candied sweetness, and a savory vanilla note with slight berry and citrus: Finish: slight buttercream (icing) and corn bread finish with a lingering vanilla spice.

From the Watervale sub region, Skilly Valley, which runs north to south on the valley floor, vines grow in sandy loam soils over broken quartz. Protected from the extremes of the summer sun by the valley sides, the grapes from these vines produce Riesling with a natural crisp acid backbone.

Lean and tense yet intensely flavoured with an electric feel and long piercing finish.

Brilliant water like core with a faint greenish tinge around the edges. Lime and lemon scents leap from the glass trailed by some orange rind, talc and chalky mineral notes. Lean and tense yet intensely flavoured, zesty lime and lemon fruits shimmer across the palate with an electric feel. Orange rind, chalky talc and steely mineral elements thread their way through the zingy back half. Super crisp acidity with a long piercing, steely mineral laced finish.

The Skilly Valley is a sub-region of Watervale. And the minerally character in the wine comes from the sandy loam soils over broken quartz. It’s quite a delicate wine, heavily scented with light florals and appley citrus notes with just a hint of musk stick. The palate is fine, and although delicate, has a tremendous driving intensity with that typical Riesling tension. It finishes long and picks up very subtle stone fruit nuances as it flows through. Drink 2025-2035.

A sub-region of Watervale. You’d not expect 2025 to be a good vintage, given it was so dry, yet here we are. The proof is in the pudding (or glass as it may be).
My word this is a juicy wine. Green mango, lime and lemongrass, a spicy almost peppery top note. It has crunch and grip, lime and sherbet, definitely a sort of Thai salad sort of thing happening, and quite stony texture on a gently grippy finish of very good length. It’s maybe a little bit rugged, though I kind of like that. Flavour is not a problem for this wine, despite its very modest alcohol. Very nice. Drink 2025-2034.

Exquisitely dry, gently textural, whispered with slate and full of class. This is Clare Valley riesling at its dry, persistent, mouthwatwering best. Lime, floral notes, slate and a whisper of strawberry and/or blackcurrant bud. It’s a beautiful, dry, crisp riesling, light, lingering and ultimately satisfying.

A richly fruited, muscular Bordeaux with bling galore that’s framed by firm, chewy tannins.

A highly awarded, firmly built, straight Malbec from Bordeaux. Pitch black in colour with a dark red black tinged hue. Pronounced blackcurrant, ripe black cherry and liquorice aromas waft through the nostrils trailed by some blueberry, vanillin cedar, earthy dried herb and spice notes. Rich blackcurrant, liquorice and black cherry fruits are framed by a robust tannin structure which imparts a firm, muscular feel across the back half. Vanillin cedar, scorched earth and spicy dried herb elements are also evident. Fresh and well fleshed yet quite chewy, it has a deeply fruited medium to long finish that carries plenty of grip. Ideally drunk with a good chunk of meat to obscure the firm tannins.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.

Made entirely from Malbec. This lifts out of the glass with blackberries, blueberries and wild pomegranate seed. Thistle, cedar and leather polish, oak matches the intensity of fruit. Vibrantly ripe with the added sturdy frame of firm tannins and lingering acidity. It’s a wine you’ll want to sit and inhale for hours but would equally work with a juicy sirloin and pomme puree. A seductive wine that showcases the integrity of Malbec, standing on its own. Drink now or will cellar well for another 10-12 years, this is in the infancy of its life, and an impressive journey still yet to go. Drink 2025-2037.

From the Petit family winemakers in the Entre-Deux-Mers appellation, this 100% Malbec release has plenty of focused Bordeaux character to it, full bodied and structured with its statement varietal aromas based on crushed blue and black berry fruit and a delicate top note of violet florals. Classic Malbec territory. Palate wise as well, “Malbeccian” powdery chalk dust feels underlying a solid backbone with encouraging acidity. All this augurs well for impressive cellaring longevity, and in fact a few hours airing is most beneficial. (By the way, this bottle stayed open and fresh for a week!)

Tormore Blueprint Cream Sherry Casks 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

    $159. 99
    Bottle
    $1919.88 Dozen
    ABV: 48%

As the label suggests, this Blueprint edition was finished in cream sherry casks (both Oloroso with Pedro Ximénez) adding sweetness, dried fruits and orange peel to the profile. 1500 'pre-release' bottles produced. 48% Alc./Vol. Non chill-filtered.

Other reviews... After reading the official tasting notes, I had to try this Tormore a second time. Someone missed their calling, though, as the whisky has very little to do with it. But that doesn't make the whisky any worse; on the contrary, this sherry cask maturation is refreshingly different from all the dark red liqueur whiskies.  - whiskybase.com

In June 2022, Elixir Distillers (the company behind a slew of UK brands such as Port Askaig and Elements of Islay) took over Tormore distillery from corporate giant, Pernod Ricard. Since then, they've presented the 'Blueprint Cask Program', an official pre-release series of three 10 year old expressions. Each focuses on a style of maturation that may form the basis of upcoming bottlings: One from bourbon barrels, another from toasted barrels and a third matured in Cream sherry casks. A core range is expected to follow in 2026. Meanwhile, malt lovers can get a heads up on these. Each Blueprint is a run of 1500 bottles at 48% ABV and are non-chill filtered. Given Tormore has mostly been a workhorse for blends, official bottlings didn't exist until 2004. Subsequent releases under Pernod Ricard never gained wide recognition, and the void has only been filled by independent offerings from Signatory, Cadenhead’s and Gordon & MacPhail. Hence, this much-overlooked distillery will be a novelty for most. The Bourbon Barrel expression has been summed up as "A great Summer whisky."

Other reviews... A very classic bourbon maturation that perfectly matches the character of the distillery. In my opinion, the finest of the three Blueprint bottlings"./

"If anyone expected an explosive dram, they will be disappointed. This Tormore enters the scene modestly, but as a classic Speyside with an incredibly clean signature. Lovely!"  - whiskybase.com

Palate: Marmalade on granary toast, cherries and almonds, malty chocolate, a very light whiff of baked earth and a drop of maple syrup. Finish: Sherry-soaked fruit, gingerbread and woody spices. 2023 Mount Mary Quintet

    $2520.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Diam Cork

The Quintet is Mount Mary's signature red and, for many, the heart of the estate. Blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec, it reflects both the site and the season with quiet precision. The 2023 vintage brings together 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot and 4% Malbec. Each component is fermented on skins for around two weeks before spending close to two years in oak: a thoughtful mix of large-format, new and seasoned barrels. The result is a wine that captures the estate's hallmark balance of structure, freshness and subtle complexity.

    Other Reviews....
Black-fruited and perfumed, with aromas of blackcurrants, violets, licorice, cassia bark, graphite, blueberry compote, pomegranates, tobacco, mahogany, lead pencil shavings and balsamic strawberries. The palate is mid-weighted, with finely integrated tannins and balanced acidity leading into a textural, rounded and seamless mouthfeel. There’s an excellent balance of fruit, florals, earth and herbs, anchored by a mineral core. This Bordeaux blend with New World freshness is built for the ages, yet offers plenty of early drinking appeal. What a wine. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Quintet is, like every other Quintet I've tasted in my life, pure joy. The wine is famous for its fine frame and floral aromatics, its ability to age what feels interminably and its unfettered expression of this corner of the Yarra Valley—Coldstream. While the cooler season of 2023 has shaped some of the elements of the wine, it remains true to its site and leaves a gentle cedar note trail through the memory. It has more pomegranate and cherry than cassis or blackberry, along with notes of violets, bay leaf and star anise even. It is a beautiful wine, one of my favorite Cabernets in this country. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam cork. Drink 2025-2043.

47/28/15/6/4% cabernet sauvignon/merlot/cabernet franc/petit verdot/malbec. In a hark back to cooler years, this was picked after the rain at the start of April. Brightly coloured, the result is a gorgeous wine; perfumed and beguiling with pure, blackcurrant fruit aromas, graphite, violets and subtle, oak-derived cedar and pencil shavings. The palate is classically medium bodied with lovely persistence, the fruit supported by balanced, fine-grained tannins and equally fine acidity. Like all great Mount Mary Quintets this will age gracefully over the next two decades but, given a good decant, is also balanced an approachable enough to enjoy in its youth. Drink 2027-2040.

47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, 4% Malbec.
This is a crisper, more acid than tannin based vintage, or at least that’s my reading. Blueberry, blackcurrant, nutmeg, peanuts and tilled earth, pencil and violet perfume, with a smoky pipe tobacco and a dried herb top note, some liquorice richness is there too, which is kind of surprising! There’s a coolness to this wine, though it’s still all blackcurrant and black olive, very finely etched with a bright cranberry and raspberry finish of excellent length. Tight and slightly tangy, and I reckon it will do so well with bottle age. I like the graphite/pencil thing on the finish very much, and the dried violet that carries a lingering fragrance as it closes. Gee, I love the perfume that this wine has, though tannin has a little more scratchiness to it than is typical. I’m thinking about this wine more than is usual, which is a good sign. In short, one of the more aromatic releases, though lesser in tannin quality. Still, it’s a beautiful thing. Drink 2029 - 2044+.

    2023 Mount Mary Triolet

    Bottle
    $1440.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Stelvin

First made in 1987, the Triolet brings a touch of Bordeaux's white wine tradition to the Yarra Valley. It combines 65% Sauvignon Blanc, 25% Semillon and 10% Muscadelle; each variety contributing its own texture and aromatic character. The components are picked and fermented separately, mostly in older oak, then matured on lees for close to a year to build depth and detail. The 2023 release offers the poise and quiet individuality that define Mount Mary's approach to white winemaking.

    Other Reviews....
An outstanding release, perhaps the best I’ve tasted in the last two decades, showing concentrated flavor and a pithy character with tension, drive and a distinctive Pessac-like mineral core. Aromas of lemon confit, Asian pears, oats, beeswax, lanolin, flint, mandarin blossoms, grapefruit, biscuits, crushed stones and honeysuckle. The palate is fine and textural, with racy acidity wrapped around a weighted, seamlessly integrated mouthfeel, layered with minerals over a citric finish. Truly exceptional and unique and arguably the finest interpretation of Bordeaux blanc in this region. 65% sauvignon blanc, 23% semillon and 12 percent muscadelle. Drink or hold. It will age for decades. Screw cap.

The 2023 Triolet leads with exotic spices and white flowers, and the oak on the nose is evident but highly attractive. The palate leads with a concentrated attack of intense fruit and acidity, courtesy of the cooler vintage that was 2023. This is a wine that ages tremendously well, and one feels almost sad to open it at this time, given the layered complexity that develops over time. For what it's worth, this is a sensational release of the Triolet, one that is tighter and edgier on the acidity front that I can recall in recent times. This is a magnificent wine. The Triolet is composed of a blend of Sauvignon Blanc (65%), Semillon (25%) and the balance Muscadelle. The fruit is estate grown, crushed and mostly destemmed, with 20% whole bunches. The wine was fermented and matured for 11 months in seasoned barriques. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2038.

65/25/10% sauvignon blanc/semillon/muscadelle. Crushed and destemmed with 20% whole bunches in the press. Barrel fermented and matured for 11 months in seasoned barriques. Brightly coloured. Intense aromas of confit lemon, quince, oyster shell and white flowers. Even at this early stage, there's a real sense of harmony on the chalky, saline, structured and very long palate. If you have never tasted this wine, you are missing out on what I have long regarded as one of the Yarra Valley's, and indeed Australia's, finest white wines. Drink 2025-2032.

Triolet, you’d have to say this is something of a MM signature wine. There’s not many SBS that add a little Muscadelle to give it that bit of extra perfume. These wines age very well.
Pie apple, grapefruit, quince, a little passionfruit and lime, a bit floral, a touch of cedar and cinnamon. There’s some lively tang, but also a silky feel through the wine, all calm and composed, chamomile perfume, a grainy feel to texture, salted pistachio, with a zesty citrus rind finish of excellent length. There’s pink grapefruit with a sweet green capsicum flavour to close. Very nice. Very specific. Yum, in short. Drink 2025 - 2035+.

Mount Mary's Chardonnay has long been defined by its balance of richness and restraint. The winemaking draws on Burgundian influence, yet the expression remains firmly of the Yarra Valley. The fruit is barrel-fermented, with about 30% new French oak, and aged for 11 months with gentle lees stirring to enhance texture and length. Malolactic fermentation is avoided to preserve the fruit’s natural acidity; the result is a wine of purity and precision that sits at the core of the estate's style.

    Other Reviews....
A wonderful balance of power and restraint, with complex aromas sitting on the edge of reduction — preserved lemons, lanolin, honeysuckle, struck matches, crushed stones, citrus blossoms and white stone fruits. The palate has seamless texture and weight, in harmony with a core of fruit-supported, tightly wound acidity and a mineral drive. The concentration leaves you salivating for minutes. Great nerve and tension bring this wine together. Truly excellent. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The 2023 Chardonnay is nutty and restrained, with a salty splay of acidity through the middle palate and finish. The wine is creamy, layered and sophisticated, and it is shaped by taut phenolics that support the abundance of fruit flavor in the mouth. After just one sip at the beginning of this note, the flavors and chalky texture can still be felt. An excellent wine each year, this 2023 no exception. There are notes of biscotti, spiced almonds, cashew, white peach, sea salt and stewed apple. What a gorgeous wine this is. It is harmonious. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2038.

20% whole-bunch pressed, the balance crushed and destemmed. Matured in French puncheons and barriques (30% new) for 11 months. A concentrated Mount Mary Chardonnay where the volume has been turned up in '23! An intense bouquet of white peach, confit lemon, fresh vanilla bean and oyster shells. There's a lot going on and this follows perfectly onto the mouth-filling, powerful, structured and harmonious palate. This will give pleasure for at least 10 if not 15-plus years. Drink 2025-2030.

Mount Mary is one of those wineries that don’t really need to send wines in for review, because they sell through very quickly, so I appreciate that they do. One of those things. I guess it’s because Sam Middleton is always stiving for excellence. I’ve been blacklisted by so many wineries these days, that I can’t even begin to count them. The best wineries take the rough with the smooth, though, admittedly, with MM, it’s pretty much always smooth. And that’s fine by me. Water finds its own level…
This is a rich and zesty wine. Gee, it has some power. I’m thinking pear, peach, pink grapefruit, almond friand, a little struck match complexity, fennel and white flower/vanilla perfume. It’s juicy, it’s flinty, heaps good stone fruit flavour and intensity, some lime zest, tight acidity, with a nutty and ripe finish of superb length. So much flavour, yet tightly coiled and fine. Outstanding. Drink 2026 - 2036+.

Introduced as a more immediately expressive counterpart to the flagship Quintet, the Reflexion Cabernets captures the same estate grown character in a style intended for earlier enjoyment. The 2023 blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot was handled with the same care and attention as its senior sibling, highlighting vibrant fruit and supple texture over sheer structure. It's a wine that distils the essence of Mount Mary's Cabernets being pure, balanced and finely detailed, wrapped into a more open and inviting frame.

    Other Reviews....
A kind of ‘baby Quintet’ is the gist. Ready to drink, also the idea. Per se. From a blend of 85% cabernet sauvignon, 10% cabernet franc and 5% merlot.
Magnificent perfume, blue fruits, lavender, dried Italianate herbs, new leather, white pepper and choc mint. More of the same to taste with an attractive puddle of plum compote, dried fig and juicy, black cherry in the mix. Sloshes around the palate with visceral pleasure, a looser knit red with lusty flavour and yet a coolness underlying. Big glasses, fire side and getting lost in something else, but the wine as a backdrop. I can see it now. Drink 2025 - 2033.

Founded by winemaker Samantha Connew, Stargazer has become one of Tasmania's most compelling small producers, crafting wines of precision and quiet intensity from the Coal River and Derwent Valleys. Whether Riesling, Chardonnay or Pinot Noir, each release reflects a meticulous, hands-off approach and a focus on texture, energy and site expression. For many, Stargazer marks the sweet spot between refinement and individuality in modern Tasmanian wine.

The 2024 Chardonnay is again a blend of their own vineyard, Palisander, planted in 2017 on a south-facing plot, along with select parcels from growers in the Upper Derwent Valley and Richmond. The grapes were hand-picked and pressed directly into 500L French oak barrels (with 20% being new), where they underwent wild fermentation and full malolactic conversion. The wine matured on lees in these barrels for eight months before being transferred, racked, and blended in a tank for an additional six weeks prior to bottling.

    Other Reviews....
This flint-struck wine from Samantha Connew pushes all my buttons. It's chalky and fruit-pure with wisps of struck-match that slowly make their way through the ripe stone and citrus fruits. This is followed by a swell of soft spice, crushed stone, meadow flowers and almond paste. It's tautly stretched, dry and savoury, with a long, linear draw across the palate. Finishes focused and true with background tones of grilled hazelnut, crème fraîche and soft spice. Drink 2025-2035.

The 2023 Pinot Noir comes exclusively from Stargazer's own vineyards in the Tea Tree sub-region of the Coal River Valley, where two separate parcels were planted in 2002 and 2017 respectively. The vineyard is composed of different clones, with most being G5V12 or Wadenswil, with some Abel, 115, 777, and MV6 clones added from the 2017 planting. The fruit is hand-picked, and destemmed (with 25% kept as whole bunches) to vats, where they undergo a cold soak for three days before fermentation begins. After primary fermentation, the must is pressed to French oak puncheons (with 30% being new), where it matures on lees for eight months before being transferred, racked, and blended in a tank for a further rest of six weeks before bottling.

If you seek a fruit-pure, flint-struck pinot noir, you are indeed in the right place. Those reductive tones lie nicely simpatico with the pure red/dark cherry, plum and raspberry fruits and there are hints of medina spice, amaro, twiggy bits, turned earth, crushed mountain herbs and purple florals in the mix. On the palate, there is a fine balance and tension between fruit, reduction and fine minerality. The wine shows a composed, complex array of spice, sinew and lovely pure fruit, finishing long, flinty and true. Drink 2025-2038.

The 2025 Tupelo wine is crafted from a harmonious blend comprising 39% Pinot Gris, 30% Pinot Blanc, and 24% Gewürztraminer, 7% Riesling. This unique composition pays homage to the renowned Alsatian 'Gentil' style by combining the full-bodied and textured characteristics of Pinot Gris, the lively vibrancy of Pinot Blanc, the aromatic spiciness of Gewürztraminer, and culminating in the finesse and acidic structure of Riesling. The grapes are all meticulously handpicked and destemmed and undergo approximately eight hours of skin contact before being gently pressed and then aged in seasoned oak barrels for a wild fermentation process. Gewurztraminer, on the other hand, lingers on the skins for a slightly longer period of two days before fermentation. Each varietal is then left to rest on lees for two months, without any sulphur before being blended and bottled.

    Other Reviews....
Sam Connew's 'Tupelo' is consistently one of my favourite wines in her vinous quiver. You see, it's a blend of pinot gris, riesling, gewürztraminer and pinot blanc and it's a case of the whole being more that the sum of its parts. It's slinky and textural, with characters of poached pear, wildflowers, honeysuckle, crushed stone, clover, iced peach tea, ozone and almond paste. It is complex and wildly easy to drink at the same time ... no mean feat and of course, being Taswegian, there is minerally energy to burn. It's a ripper. Drink 2025-2030.

The 2025 Single Vineyard Riesling delicately balances between being 'dry' and 'off-dry' (6.7g/L residual sugar), and achieves a remarkable equilibrium between acidity and fruitiness. The Riesling comes from all three blocks of the Stargazer vineyard located in the Tea Tree sub-region of Coal River, planted in 2004, 2017, and 2021, supplemented with grapes from another grower in Campania sub region, planted in 2001. Pale straw with aromas of green apple, lime and grapefruit with hints of flint, clover blossom, wildflowers, distant crushed herbs, cold chamomile tea, crushed stone, sea spray and ozone. There is just a touch of texture on the palate, which shows a focused mineral line and excellent tension between the inherent citrus and apple fruit tones and the chalky mineral cadence. Lovely stuff; crisp, composed drinking. Drink 2025-2035.

Daylesford Spirit Triple Barrel Single Malt Australian Whisky (500ml)
    Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $164. 99
    Bottle
    $1979.88 Dozen
    ABV: 48%

Made with harvested Mount Franklin water and Australian grain, this limited release, triple-barrelled whisky was aged in bourbon casks, then finished in PX and Oloroso sherry. We received a tiny 20ml sample, leaving the impression of a lightish, pastry-soft malt, almost floral in moments, with a gorgeous feminine character framed by clean oak and spices. The distillers state it's deliberately styled like a Scottish Highlander, but it could equally pass for a polished, malt-heavy blend. 48% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... rich notes of honey and maple and a soft hint of freshly cut summer grass.

    El Arquero Blanco Tequila (700ml)
    Jalisco, MEXICO
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 38%

A new tequila venture founded by former Test Cricket Captain, Adam Gilchrist. The brand’s name, El Arquero, is Spanish for “The Archer” and “The Keeper”. “That’s where the cricket reference ends,” Gilchrist says. “I wanted something that could stand on its own two feet... I’m not a brand ambassador, I’m a founder. I wanted to do it properly.” Adamant that the brand isn't about celebrity or fanciful stories, Gilchrist is genuinely interested in quality. “We didn’t want to just slap a label on someone else’s juice,” he says. “We wanted something authentically made, traditionally distilled, and clean as it gets. No additives, no shortcuts.” So he and his team partnered with the Báñuelos family, third-generation masters and original founders of Cazadores. Their Destiladora de Los Altos distillery has been quietly perfecting the art for over half a century.

The Blanco is aimed at being accessible without compromising proper tequila character. Seven year old agaves are harvested to create a bright, herbaceous aroma leading to a refreshingly crisp palate. According to Esquire Magazine, "...clarity shows in the liquid. The Blanco leads with roasted pineapple, citrus and white pepper before sliding into notes of vanilla and lemon. A small portion is aged briefly in oak, just enough to take the sting out of the back end." 38% Alc./Vol.

2014 El Dorado High Ester Blend PM / DHE Cask Strength Guyana Rum (750ml)
    GUYANA
    $299. 00
    Bottle
    $3588.00 Dozen
    ABV: 51.7%

Following the series’ inaugural release in 2024 (La Bonne Intention / DHE) comes this single barrel blend of two pot still rums, PM (Port Mourant double wooden pot still ) & DHE (Diamond High Ester from a small John Dore double retort pot still), both aged for 10 years in second-fill Bourbon barrels. According to the company, their high ester rums are marked by intense fruity and floral notes, driven by the concentration of the aromatic compounds that define their signature character. The distillation process involves slow boiling and high reflux in the DHE still, which is said to help retain and extract the high concentration of ethyl acetate produced during the “funky fermentation” process. As a result, the rum achieves ester levels exceeding 1,500 grams per hectolitre.

Beyond the deep mahogany colour, the first thing you notice is the volatility of alcohol. Once the fumes recede the nose gives way to papaya, mango yogurt, ginger warmth and latent vanillas. If you like your rums intense, this comes with a potent, almost incendiary attack of succulent tropical fruits and bracing spices. As your mouth adjusts to the ABV it feels less aggressive.; flavours of ginger biscuits and dry molasses are evident, as is the Bourbon oak input, but overall it's true to the label, capturing a bittersweet fruit-bomb profile that repeatedly brings you back to those funky esters, reminiscent of banana bread and ripe papaya, especially as the finish gains definition after air contact. Not everyone can handle these very natural and exotic styles, but most would agree, they're rare to find, and deliver at least twice as much character than 99% of mainstream market rums. 51.7% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... aromas of green apple, flambéed banana, and subtle notes of clove, cigar, and peat. On the palate, the fruit-forward style showcases notes of ripe tropical fruit, clove, and infused tobacco spice.

Glenmorangie The Original 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - New Release
    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

In the last decade, no-age-statement (NAS) whisky has been championed, and age statements have tumbled. In an unusual move for the Scotch Whisky Industry, Glenmorangie are putting age statements up instead of down, starting with their newly presented core releases.

Other reviews... The new Original, changed from 10 to 12 years old, stands tall with fresh ripe orange and peach fruitiness on the nose, then honey, vanilla cream, wood spice, and exotic flora notes. The palate revolves around lemon, vanilla, apricot, peach, and orange, plus cinnamon and banana bread. The ripeness of the fruit and the creaminess stand out above the floral and vanilla elements of the old 10 year old. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com

There used to be the modest but likeable 10 year old ‘The Original’, which we last tried in 2023 (WF 81) but it’s since been replaced by this 12 year old, the house having added two extra years of maturation. A refreshing change from the recent global trend of reducing ages by heading toward NAS territory, you know whisky's way of doing shrinkflation. Colour: gold. Nose: the 40% do make themselves felt, or rather not felt, if you see what I mean, but the American oak casks do lend their usual creamy and vanilla-forward touch, alongside ripe apples, banana, soft oak (with a whisper of fresh sawdust), and a fairly prominent note of Earl Grey tea. Also some fresh barley, which makes the whole thing rather pleasant. Mouth: we find the nose again on the palate, though it leans a little more towards oranges this time, and thus a little less towards the rest. A hint of bitterness follows, then green tea, a touch of ginseng and a suggestion of peach skin. It’s light but not weak. Finish: a little short, yet once again, fair enough. Green tea with a drop of honey and a discreet grassy side. Comments: I quite like this charming little dram, nicely put together. 82 points - whiskyfun.com

Dasher + Fisher Whisky Barrel Gin (500ml)
    Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $64. 99
    Bottle
    $779.88 Dozen
    ABV: 44%

Maturing gin in oak barrels is not new, however, using x-whisky barrels hasn't been a common practice. A short spell ageing typically contributes woody and herbaceous notes, in this case the whisky-soaked wood imparts orange and coconut, adding a unique depth to the flavour. The foundation of vanilla rounds out the experience, creating a smooth and harmonious balance. Enjoy neat or over ice to savour its nuanced complexity, or use it to create sophisticated cocktails like an Old Fashioned or Negroni with a whisky twist. It also pairs beautifully with tonic water and an orange twist for an elevated G&T experience. 44% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Nose: A warm and inviting aroma of sweet whisky intermingles with woody and herbaceous notes, accompanied by hints of vanilla and subtle citrus tones. Palate: Rich and smooth, with layers of orange zest and creamy coconut emerging from the whisky barrel aging. The herbal botanicals add depth, while the touch of vanilla provides a gentle sweetness that balances the woodsy character perfectly. Finish: Long and satisfying, with lingering notes of whisky-soaked oak, soft vanilla, and a hint of citrus, leaving a velvety aftertaste on the palate.

Whether you're crafting refreshing cocktails, adding a twist to classic gin and tonics, or enjoying them neat over ice, this bundle offers the perfect way to explore fruity, aromatic notes that balance sweetness with a hint of tartness.

Sloe Gin: Nose: Rich, fruity aromas with notes of ripe berries and a hint of almond from the sloe drupes. Palate: Sweet and tart, with dark fruit flavours and subtle earthy undertones. Smooth and syrupy texture makes it perfect for sipping or mixing. Finish: Long, warming finish with lingering berry sweetness and a touch of spice.

Blackberry Gin: Nose: Fresh blackberry aroma with herbal and floral hints. Palate: A well-rounded balance of sweet and tart blackberry, with delicate botanical notes in the background. Slightly juicy with a soft mouthfeel. Finish: Crisp and light, with the blackberry flavour lingering gently.

Raspberry Gin: Nose: Bright, fragrant raspberry with hints of citrus and summer fruits. Palate: Bursting with fresh raspberry flavour, accompanied by subtle floral and botanical nuances. Well-balanced sweetness with a soft, dry edge. Finish: Clean and refreshing, with a subtle tartness that fades smoothly.

Tormore Blueprint Toasted Barrels 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $159. 99
    Bottle
    $1919.88 Dozen
    ABV: 48%

Other reviews... The ‘replica’ wave shows no sign of retreating, and this design strongly evokes the old official Tormores from the 1970s. You’ll say those were excellent!... Toasted casks are a different breed from the usual charred ones typically used for whisky, but a strong toast will also leave its mark on the contents, leaning towards coffee yet with fewer tannins. Colour: straw. Nose: for the moment we’re on mineral and citrusy tension, which brings to mind some young Pulteneys we’ve just sampled. It’s fresh, with a fatty side on the nose (sunflower oil, green banana, peanut butter) but, thank goodness, there’s no avalanche of coconut and vanilla in sight. A few dandelion petals fluttering in the background. Mouth: there’s a distinctly spicy and resinous edge here, one wonders whether it’s European oak—or even Mizunara? Also heaps of maquis honey with a punchy character, and a definite juniper note that’ll have you sailing straight across the North Sea to Holland. Let’s not forget the speculoos, which are also quite dominant. All in all, it comes across as more of a blend component, and in fact that’s exactly what it is, the future ‘new’ Tormores won’t be flying solo in this particular style. Finish: hints of mint liqueur and turmeric. Comments: very unusual and leaning more towards the spirit of some young Germanic distilleries, I’d say. That said, it’s very well executed. 85 points - whiskyfun.com

Finely constructed with such purity and complexity, showing aromas of kaffir limes, struck match, white flowers, lemon peel and slate. The palate has very high energy and tension with a driving acidity and powerful undertone that will unravel for years to come. Made from vines planted on limestone in 1962, bringing a chalky aspect to the wine. Excellent. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The 2024 The Florita Riesling is tense and tightly coiled, with lemon zest, beeswax, green apple, cheesecloth, white pepper and shaved fennel. I find this to be quite a compact and savory iteration of the Florita, far less floral and talc-like than other years. I am looking to the acid drive and the phenolic presence for direction here, and both suggest that patience may be rewarded. 12.4% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2028-2039.

I am the first to admit that at times I live beyond my means. There are consumables that stretch this, and in rare moments, items of relief. Discovering wines like Heggies’ Riesling for under $30 is one of them. The wine opens with a most pretty nose of white blossoms, clementine, sliced Granny Smith apples, and fresh water over pebbled brooks. There is something almost purifying about it, a purge of the week’s stress and for some… reckless spending. Between the zip and zing of lime zest and green apple flesh, the wine is lightweight and downy. A gentle grip on the palate pulls it down a line of slaty minerality towards a talcy close. In Heggies, we trust.
