Lark Distillery Forty Spotted Gin (700ml)
    Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Named after the Forty-spotted Pardalote, the island's rarest bird, and produced at the Lark Distillery, this gin matches traditional gin botanicals with Tasmanian pepperberry. Tasted from a 20ml sample, the nose suggests lemon meringue and lime peel over light juniper and hints at white pepper. It's reflected in a pure, uncomplicated, creamy-textured profile with an attractive lemon / lime accented finish. Use this as an all-purpose mixer or in casual G&Ts. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... This gin is pretty floral and slightly perfumed, think lavender and violet, followed by a whiff of sweet orange, berries and juniper. The palate is spicy, with soft juniper notes. Overall it's pretty clean, but it would've benefited from a little more balance. 78 points - distiller.com

Le Gin de Christian Drouin Gin (700ml)
    Normandy, FRANCE
    $99. 99

    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42%
A cider apple eau-de-vie from Normandy in which juniper berries, ginger, vanilla, lemon, cardamom, cinnamon, rose petals and almonds have been macerated.

Tasting note: Crystal clear with a silvery blush. Shows considerable viscosity. Appealing and atypical gin aromas of green apple peel and chamomile tea over subtle juniper, vanilla and cardamom. Several minutes of air contact sees the apply / cidery note emphasised along with fresher pine and woody juniper scents. Mildly viscous on entry followed by creamy-yet-dry flavours of pine needle, chamomile, mint chocolate and peppermint tea in the aftertaste. A delicious and novel expression that should pop in G&Ts. 42% Alc./Vol.

Le Gin de Christian Drouin Calvados Cask Finish Gin (700ml)
    Normandy, FRANCE
    $114. 99
    Bottle
    $1379.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42%
Foremost a Calvados producer, Guillaume Drouin has extended his portfolio with a selection of cleverly crafted gins. This one is based on the original "Le Gin" released in 2015. Thirty varieties of cider apples and eight different botanicals are employed. Each botanical is distilled separately before being blended. The gin is then aged for around six months in former 10-year-old Calvados casks.

Tasting note: [BATCH 2017-A tasted] Pours brilliant bright gold. Hits the jackpot with a high-pitched bouquet of apple cider, pine needle, menthol, bright juniper and citrus peel. Much like the nose, only more subdued, this offers piney, woody-juniper like flavours with hints of black pepper as well as apple-cinnamon yogurt through the aftertaste. A barrel aged style in which key botanicals remain clearly expressed. 42% Alc./Vol.

    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen

Better known as a Calvados producer, Guillaume Drouin continues exploring new flavour associations in his small batch gins. Seeking a perfect match with apple and juniper, Drouin has signed off on a new blend devoted to red berries. A "one plant at a time" distillation policy lets Drouin keep adjusting proportions so as to obtain the best possible result.

Tasting note: [2018 edition] Clear. Pure, lifted aromas of apple sauce, ripe raspberries, fresh orange peel and earthy juniper. Drops a notch in intensity after 2-3 minutes air contact. Delicious fruity / floral delivery combines elderflower, semi-ripe blackberries and refreshing citrus peel to great effect. Ends delicately minty, spicy, expertly balanced with fine astringency. Great contemporary gin. 8550 bottles. 42% Alc./Vol.

    Lobo Djinn Gin (500ml)
    Adelaide Hills, South Australia, AUSTRALIA
    $72. 99
    Bottle
    $875.88 Dozen
    ABV: 41.6%
A gin from the Adelaide Hills employing quince instead of the more typical citrus, backed up by a pure juniper note and supported by a blend of botanicals with spices and some other "ethereal notes". The juniper character stands up in classic cocktails, however the house cidermaker's favourite is a simple gimlett with straight lime juice.

Tasting note: [20ml sample] Creamy yet fresh aromas of green pear, pine buds, earthy juniper, liquorice root and emerging anise. Great balance and length with a superb rush of anise(?)-laced juniper through the middle stages. Ends cool-mint fresh, delicately peppery with subtle pine, quince and aniseed lingering. Delicious. 41.6% Alc./Vol.

    Luxardo London Dry Gin (700ml)
    ITALY
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Made from a grain based spirit, Luxardo's formula employs nine botanicals in a 24 hour infusion. These include juniper, coriander seed, orange peel, liquorice and lemon peel amongst others. The aroma yields fresh, peppery/woody/root-like, juniper forward notes, muted and leaner in later passes with the emphasis on dried herb / potpourri as well as nuances of cinnamon bark and lemon thyme. Medium -bodied delivery features orris root, coriander seed and pepper over background juniper and late anise. Finishes brisk, lively, warming. Narrows out with tongue nipping spices and light piney juniper. The dry, linear character of this gin will lend itself to Martinis. 43% Alc./Vol.

Another gin with a strong citrus accent from Malfy: This gorgeous, rose-coloured specialty incorporates Sicilian pink grapefruit peels infused in grain spirit for 36 hours. There's also a hint of rhubarb and Italian juniper along side five other botanicals including lemon peel and coriander. Expect bright, juicy, fresh grapefruit flavours with a long juniper finish. Malfy G.Q.D.I. Con Limone Gin (700ml)
    ITALY
    $74. 99
    Bottle
    $899.88 Dozen
    ABV: 41%
Produced by the Vergano family on the Amalfi Coast in Italy's east, a region known for its food and citrus - in particular, lemons - hence the label statement "Con Limone". Not surprisingly, this is not your typical London Dry. Expect a contemporary, lemon-heavy style.

Other reviews... Tasted neat, the lemon is overwhelming and bordering on a sherberty limoncello. That said, add water or more importantly – vermouth / tonic / mixer and the core gin botanicals (juniper, coriander seed) come back into contention. Malfy Gin was always going to be a lemon forward gin – Con Limone – kind of gives that away… but there is a gin under there and while progressive, it would still appeal to any classic gin fans. The finish has a lovely depth too, with more piney wood-floor notes coming through. 41% Alc./Vol. - www.ginfoundry.com

    ITALY
    $72. 99
    Bottle
    $875.88 Dozen
    ABV: 41%
No prizes for guessing that Sicilian Blood Orange peels form the keynote botanical in this gin... Blood oranges are a prized variety in Sicily, harvested in November when their rich red color develops in the cool Mediterranean nights. The peels are steeped in alcohol and pressed in a basket press. The infusion is then blended with juniper and other botanicals before being distilled in a stainless steel vacuum still. Expect refreshing citrus with a touch of vanilla. Tart grapefruit and juniper balance the orange sweetness. Try it in a G&T with fresh fruit for garnish. 41% Alc./Vol.

    ITALY
    $71. 99
    Bottle
    $863.88 Dozen
    ABV: 41%
While the other Malfy Gins showcase varieties of Italian citrus (lemon, grapefruit and blood orange), 'Originale' offers a more traditional gin profile. The keynote here is wild Italian juniper along with five other botanicals combined with Monviso mountain water extracted at the village of Crissolo. Established in 1906, the family run distillery is in Moncalieri, just outside the city of Torino - an area famed for its fine wines and spirits. Carlo, his wife Piera and their children Rita and Valter run the show. Beppe Ronco and Denis Muni are the Master Distillers. Their label even has its own 'quality control' stamp: "G.Q.D.I." stands for 'Gin di QUALITÀ DISTILLATO in Italia' - a guarantee of quality and origin. 41% Alc./Vol.

Equipped with two gorgeous Holsten stills, Brookvale locals, David Whittaker and Vanessa Wilton are driven to create spirits that capture the diversity of Australian botanicals, exploring above and below the ocean to create that something special. Presently offering two vodkas, a White Dog malt and this contemporary-styled gin, the spirits are meticulously monitored during distillation and rather than computer controlled cuts, Manly rely on well-tuned noses to capture as much flavour as possible.

Produced from a wheat base, botanicals for the gin include Sea Lettuce, Pepper Leaf, Anise Myrtle, Finger Lime and Orange Peel. The odd botanical here is obviously the marine addition. It was inspired by Elijah Holland, head chef at "Powder Keg", a restaurant and gin bar in Sydney. He recommended it as a novel 'North Beach coastal influence' for the gin's profile.

Tasting note: Clear with thick tears down the sides of the glass. Excellent aromatic lift includes aromas of pine needle, fresh citrus peel (lemon / lime) and delicate white pepper. Dry, cool-mint confectionary-like flavours (Lifesavers?), followed by muted lime juice and a chalky, lemony finish. Light piney aftertaste. An engaging citrus-led style that will shine in summer cocktails. 43% Alc./Vol.

A collaboration with Kurtis Bosley of Public House Management Group that takes its inspiration from Australian coastal botanicals. All of which is rounded out with the classic juniper back bone.

Tasting note: Clear. Rock pools, sea spray and hints of shell fish. Second pass suggests brine, lemon peel, piney juniper, touches of white pepper and coriander. A creamy entry followed by flavours of lemon peel, juniper, fresh coriander and cool-mint confectionary. Crescendos at the finish which is peppery, tongue tingling, salty, wonderfully vibrant and prolonged. Lingering coriander and juniper aftertaste. Great stuff. 43% Alc./Vol.
Martin Miller's Westbourne Strength Gin (700ml)
    London, UNITED KINGDOM
    $94. 99
    Bottle
    $1139.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45.2%

Gin - The Dutch invented it, the English refined it, the New World glamorised it, and now , according to most reviews, Martin Miller's have perfected it. "Westbourne Strength", was recently awarded ‘Spirit of the Year 2003’ by the Chicago Beverage Testing Institute (BTI), the world’s largest and most powerful drinks testing institute.
Miller's is London distilled using over eight botanicals and aromatics including selected Tuscan juniper, cassia bark, angelica, Florentine orris, liquorice root, coriander, finest Seville citrus peel, ground nutmeg, and cinnamon bark. The botanicals are steeped overnight in the spirit to allow a greater infusion of flavour. Millers gin is distilled in the traditional way via pot still. This is a time consuming process, but for gin production it is unrivalled. It keeps the 'body' of the spirit high and because of a lower distilling strength the congeners (flavours) are kept within the final product. Millers use a one hundred year old copper still manufactured by John Dore & Co. in 1903. Following distillation, most London dry gins are blended with British spring waters. Miller’s is transported by ship to Iceland where it is blended with glacial lava filtered waters, supposedly the purest in the world. In the small village of Borganes on Iceland's remote west coast, a final ‘mystery’ ingredient, unknown even to the master distiller, is also added.

Other reviews... Clear appearance. Sweet floral and citrus aromas have an herbaceous, juniper edge. This is silky in the mouth with a bright citrus (grapefruit and clementine) character, spice, and juniper notes. Finishes in a long, smooth, citrusy fade. Tasting note: Clear. Initially citrus focussed with moderate scents of lemon gelato, mandarine peel and later herbal notes including sweet oregano, thyme and pickled ginger. Citrussy entry is home-made lemonade-like followed by drier, rooty, herbal / mild juniper flavours concluding moderately peppery, fresh and medium long. This latest batch seems more subdued than 4-5 years back. 40% Alc./Vol

Other reviews... Clear. Sweet, candied lemon peel, and floral aromas. A graceful entry leads to a satiny, medium-to full-bodied palate with intensely fruity, citrus peel, mild juniper, and exotic peppercorn notes. Monkey 47 Barrel Cut Schwarzald Gin (500ml)
    Lossburg, GERMANY
    $119. 99
    Bottle
    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 47%

After several years of sensory research and experimentation with all kinds of wood, the distillers at Monkey 47 have adopted a very traditional approach in the hunt for the perfect barrel-aged gin. Produced a few times each year, this limited edition expression is aged in new 110 litre, custom made, slightly toasted mulberry barrels for 180 days. Long forgotten, the rare wood of the mulberry tree was once traditionally used to mature the finest distillates the Black Forest had to offer. This highly aromatic wood is one the most redolent timbers available. It also contributes to the gin's unique colour and aroma while adding a hint of sweetness. Unfiltered. 47% Alc./Vol.

    Monkey 47 Sloe Gin (500ml)
    Lossburg, GERMANY
    $94. 99
    Bottle
    $1139.88 Dozen
    ABV: 29%

A drier-styled sloe gin, maintaining Monkey 47's trademark character throughout.

Sloe Gins have followed the resurgence of their London Dry relatives with new releases appearing from around the globe; including Australia and Germany. If you're new to this quintessentially British recipe, you'll soon realise the two are related by suffix alone, with the majority of brands available producing a sometimes overly sweet, liqueur-like style. There are a few exceptions. Monkey 47 is one.

Sloes (Prunus spinosa) are a close cousin of another stone fruit: the plum, with which they share its reputation for reducing inflammation, calming upset stomachs and soothing kidney and bladder ailments. Typically the berries are picked in the early Winter months and combined with gin and sugar to allow a maceration infusion to occur. The ratio of sugar to gin will depend on each producer and the properties of the fruit's harvest, accounting for varying levels of sweetness and the inherit astringency of the sloe.

As always, the quality and style of gin will play a significant role towards the end flavour. Traditional recipes call for the juniper heavy 'London Dry'. With this new-world approach, the complex yet quirky Monkey 47 Gin has been combined with handpicked sloe berries from the Black forest in Germany. After several good stirs, the final mix is left for a four week maturation period in earthenware containers. During this time, sediment settles to the bottom of the tank. The team employ a hydropress to extract further liquid from the sediment without damaging the berries. The macerate is then drawn out from the top. Many will be happy to know the end result remarkably maintains Monkey 47's trademark character throughout.

Other reviews... Distinctly drier and spicier than classic sloe gins with pronounced freshly sawn spruce woodiness. 29% Alc./Vol. 4.5 stars - diffordsguide.com

This is the Gin that had world famous U.S. wine critic, Robert Parker, spellbound [see his review below]. Much to his consternation it was almost impossible to obtain a bottle in the States. The only way to get it in Australia is to source it yourself. So we did!

Monkey 47 is definitely on a short list of hard to find but worth-the-wait gins. Produced in the Black Forest in Germany from no less than 47 botanicals (mostly from the region). Unusual ingredients include blackberry leaves, sloes, honeysuckle, pine shoots, cranberries and lingonberries. Following distillation and maceration, the gin is stored for 100 days in earthenware 'casks'. We've just imported a tiny quantity. Beautifully packaged in an old world apothecary bottle. 47% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: [Batch 16 tasted] Crystal clear / slightly viscous. Fabulous aromatics with juniper and lemon sherbet in the opening phase; aeration accents pine needle, potpourri and pepper. Intense but beautifully poised with pine needle, peppery juniper, dried herb and grapefruit flavours unfolding in a slow release surge. Possibly better all round balance in this latest effort? Concludes fresh, pure and super long. First rate. 47% Alc./Vol.

First tasted 2011... Clear with a silvery, glycerous appearance. The initial perfumed burst is of sweet berry / juniper and assorted fresh citrus peel; further aeration releases pine needle, lavender and clove-like scents. Distinctive and somewhat unconventional, some tasters found the aromatics a little cologne like. On the palate, this begins soft and glycerous, gradually building intensity, climaxing in an explosion of peppers; Mid palate is off dry and oily with juniper, lavender, pine needle and spice flavours persisting into the long, very dry after taste. Bracing stuff! 94 points 47% Alc./vol.

Other reviews…. Clear. Bold aromas of pine blossoms, exotic peppercorns, candied lemon and orange peels, sage, and sweet bbq rub with a supple, dry-yet-fruity medium-full body and a zesty lavender candy, pepper, powdered sugar, and tangerine sorbet finish. An excellent and unique combination of vibrant citrus, floral, and herbal dimensions. Will be outstanding in cocktails.

"...something I am trying to track down for my personal use, an absolutely extraordinary perfumed, intense, silky gin called Monkey 47, which is made in Germany's Black Forest. Packaged in a small 500 mls bottle, it is not that expensive (approximately $100), but it was a remarkable gin. In Europe it is apparently available at top liquor shops, so if you can find it, it is an astonishing gin."

[2019 bottling] Made from juniper berries air-freighted from North Macedonia to Adelaide. Juniper and lemon sorbet plus a touch of cool mint are dialed up to near impossible intensity while the finish fuses fresh pine buds with crushed peppercorns. ABV: 43%
The “Never Never” label speaks of the Australian bush and its people, but also something otherworldly. Established in 2016, the aim of the project is “not just to create delicious spirits, but to make the most flavoursome spirits on the market.”

Combining the talents of George Georgiadis, Sean Baxter and Tim Boast, their Triple Juniper gin employs air-freighted berries for maximum freshness. The juniper is treated in three distinct ways, partially steeped, partially in the pot and partially in the vapour. The aim is to capture both the bright and the earthy qualities, and to balance the massive juniper input, a few other botanicals are used: Australian coriander provides brighter citrus and less earthiness than its English or Indian counterparts. A predominate fresh lemon citrus influence with a touch of fresh lime and liquorice adds lift over a root base of angelica and orris. Native pepperberry provides a balancing, savoury element without the heavy menthol finish of traditional peppers. Finally a hint of cinnamon hits just the right amount of warmth.

Tasting note: [Batch 1 tasted] Plush and oily, juniper-heavy aromas combine with citrus, fresh sawn pine, coriander, faint anise and white pepper warmth. Follows through with a silky wave of juniper gelato, citrus peel and delicate pepper-cinnamon warmth. Leaner and more linear to finish; the spice and lime pick up where the juniper trails off. Excellent length. 43% Alc./Vol.

The grapes were harvested in March from the Harvey’s family plot, not far from the Willunga township. The plot itself was purchased by John Harvey, patriarch of Chalk Hill and was first planted way back in 1897.

A contemporary take on traditional sloe gin, the spice and bright citrus flavours of this gin work wonderfully with the jammy raspberry brightness of the young Grenache character. It's bursting with red fruits and makes an delicious gin and tonic. Alternatively, simply try it over ice with a slice of orange. 38% Alc./Vol.

With a label inspired by a love of art house cinema, this deep orange coloured gin is produced from a South Melbourne cellar using a modified copper pot still with a ‘bubble T’ column. Aside from its distinctive hue, the gin is described as "delicate, yet packing a punch" with botanicals such as Albanian juniper berries, blood orange peel, fresh navel oranges, dried orange peel, roasted fenugreek, coriander seeds, cardamom seeds, wormwood and angelica root combining for a complex, bitter-sweet flavour sensation. 40% Alc./Vol.

    $82. 99
    Bottle
    $995.88 Dozen
    ABV: 37.5%
Tasting note: Made using Albanian juniper and Fenugreek with the distillery's 'blood orange gin' as a base, at first pour this smells a little like orange cake but quickly develops aromas of meringue, vanilla and creamy soda, repeating in a liqueur-like delivery (think Pavlova less the fruit on top). The lack of juniper and the overt sweetness puts this in a sub category of gin liqueurs. Recommended with light tonic and a strawberry garnish. 37.5% Alc./Vol.

A premium, small batch Aussie gin priced to rival mass produced brands like Tanqueray and Bombay Sapphire. Offer holds for March only.

A vision for a new gin distillery in Brunswick began to take shape after "a few too many negronis at a local bar". As disciples of the craft movement, proprietors, Dave Irwin and Matt Argus wanted to keep it small-scale and local. They waited three years for their custom made, 230 litre Muller copper still to arrive from Germany. It uses a new technology which increases copper contact with the spirit to produce a more pure and aromatic distillate. The team also sought advice from Master Distiller, Anders Bilgram from Nordisk Branderi distillery in Denmark. "We knew we were getting closer to our final recipe, and that we were onto something, when Anders started requesting larger samples to be sent across the other side of the world." Ten botanicals were finally selected out of around one hundred that were tested. The first release of Patient Wolf sold out in a matter of days via a crowd-funding website. Batches have been rolling out ever since. Most botanicals are steeped overnight, including juniper, coriander seeds, cubeb pepper, orris root and tonka beans (native to South America). Ruby grapefruit and aniseed myrtle are infused in a botanical basket.

We tasted the second batch back in 2017, and by all reports, the boys have only further refined their craft. Patient Wolf opens with powerful aromas evoking orris and liquorice root over hints of black pepper. Exposure accents coriander, grapefruit, juniper and ups the freshness. The palate is silky on entry, leading into a viscous, pure, gently warming profile with creamy orris root, sage and coriander followed by a burst of piney juniper to finish. There's a subtle aftertaste of aniseed and white pepper. All up, it's a lively, interesting and cleverly composed contemporary gin that strikes a balance between traditional London Dry and New World styles. You could even say it's "Quintessentially Melbourne". 41.5% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Bright citrus of ruby grapefruit and fresh juniper are delicately balanced with subtle spice of aniseed myrtle, cubeb pepper, and tonka beans. Bold, complex and aromatic. A perfectly balanced Melbourne gin that will stand tall in drinks. It makes an incredible G&T with ruby grapefruit. Or try a Negroni or Martini.

    ABV: 26%

Since 1793, Plymouth Gin has been handcrafted at England’s oldest working Gin distillery, Black Friars in Plymouth. The distillery was formerly a Dominican Monastery and the final lodgings of the Pilgrim Fathers before they set sail to the New World in 1620. The 'Mayflower' sailing ship, aswell as the monk continue to be represented on the bottle to this day.

Plymouth Gin owes its distinctive taste to a blend of ingredients that avoid the use of too much juniper or bitter botanicals, thus giving it a remarkably smooth, integrated palate. Water from the nearby hills of Dartmoor is sourced for its crystal clear purity. The result is a lighter bodied style with fabulous intensity and well balanced botanical flavours. To create Plymouth Sloe Gin, the finest sloe berries are steeped in high strength Plymouth Gin and soft Dartmoor water. The result is a smooth liqueur taste with a balance between sweet and bitter fruit flavours, and a hint of almonds from the stone of the fruit. 26%Alc./Vol.

From the Poli distillery, located north of the Veneto region, otherwise known for their first class grappas. The family's gin is artisanally distilled in a vacuum bain-marie pot still and obtained from a unique infusion of juniper berries, muscat grape, mountain pine, cembra pine, mint, cardamom and coriander.

Tasting note: Crystal clear / silvery blush. Outstanding lift and freshness to the bouquet with layered aromas of pine needle, lavender and juniper. Five minutes in the glass shifts the emphasis towards smoky cardamom, liquorice root and peppermint. Intense piney-juniper attack is moderately peppery, lively and super-fresh. Finish highlights cough lozenge and pine needle closing vibrant, peppery with late hints of cardamom in the fade. Effervescent, characterful and also beautifully presented. 46% Alc./Vol.

    ABV: 42%

This is the second gin to be released by the Poli distillery, located north of the Veneto region, otherwise known for their first class grappas. Distillation in a vacuum bain-marie pot still ensures the herbal botanicals are infused as delicately and slowly as possible. Initially, the bouquet offers lemon and lime juice before taking a more interesting path through a garden of fresh thyme, apple mint, basil, juniper and crushed eucalyptus leaves. Despite being just 42% the palate carries good body and mouthfeel; the medley of sweet herbs accents basil and rosemary followed by citrus zest, eucalyptus and coriander. There's also a pleasant peppery note on the back palate to sustain the finish. Juniper doesn't feature, but that doesn't detract from what is a complex, invigorating contemporary style where the herbal botanicals get the loudest say. Recommended in a Vesper or Tom Collins. 42% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Unsurprisingly, the nose is quite aromatic. However, what is surprising is that it is not as juniper-forward as expected. It is quite sharp and medicinal at first, but eventually finds it way into herbal territory, with coriander, a hint of juniper elderflower, and muted juniper. A palate of mixed garden herbs, basil, and sage dominate the beginning of the palate, but then the mint takeover begins. The finish is long and immensely enjoyable, with the minty menthol sensation leading the charge before cardamom and rosemary provide muted relief near the end. Incredibly savory and immensely herbal, this will challenge even the staunchest of gin enthusiasts to find fault with it, though I’m sure someone will. In my estimation, this rates as one of the better gins I’ve enjoyed in quite some time. - drinkhacker.com

Poor Toms Pina Colada Gin (700ml)
    Sydney, New South Wales, AUSTRALIA
    $84. 99
    Bottle
    $1019.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42%
A limited release seasonal Gin, inspired by the Marrickville team’s favourite cocktail. This is a juniper-forward Gin (not a Gin liqueur), with tropical botanicals including coconut, pineapple, pandan leaf, lime, nutmeg and allspice. On the nose, there’s a nice kick of juniper with an underlying tone of caramelized pineapple and vanilla. Toasted coconut and hints of sea-spray and citrus add freshness. When sipped, the oily consistency coats the palate with silky coconut flavours contrasted by lime peel bitterness and fresh grassy notes. For serving, this sits well in a Martini or a Southside, but it’s just made for fruit juice - or take the distillery’s advice and make their version of a Piña Colada, with fresh-squeezed pineapple, a splash of coconut cream, a touch of sugar, squeeze of lime and bitters, served simply on the rocks. 5000 bottles produced. 42% Alc./Vol.

    $1043.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Yet another delightful release from Marrickville's Poor Toms, this time fresh strawberries are steeped in their Gin base along with young ginger and hibiscus flowers. This creates a bright aromatic flavour profile, and contributres to the Gin's pink hue. Distillates of cardamom and cubeb (or "Java") pepper helps to elevate the delicate sweetness of the strawberry. Unlike many flavoured Gins, this is bone-dry--no sugar is added. It's best mixed in a G&T, or makes a cracking Rosé Negroni.

The brainchild of Griffin Blumer and Jesse Kennedy, a duo who began making gin at home before investing their savings in a 200 litre German copper still (named Jane). Based in Marrickville, Sydney, Blumer and Kennedy were subsequently joined by one of Australia’s most experienced gin distillers, Marcel Thompson, who commenced his career with United Distillers New Zealand in 1987, as well as playing apprentice to some well respected names in gin making. Poor Tom's is handcrafted in small batches from Australian wheat spirit and features fresh green apple, native strawberry gum-leaf and chamomile in the botanical mix.

Tasting note: Clear. Drier styled with a complex bouquet that includes lemon verbena, liquorice root, hints of chamomile and pepper with later passes adding potpourri and turmeric-like scents over understated juniper and applemint. Clean, crisp delivery; mid palate features piney juniper, dried citrus peel and hints of applemint; excellent length. Finishes pleasantly peppery, refreshing and elegant with delicate bitter lemon peel, peppermint and juniper in the aftertaste. Outstanding. 41.3% Alc./Vol.

Famous for his delectable Willabrand Glace Figs, in 2016, Willa Wauchope found himself with a surplus of fig syrup. At a loss of what to do with the aromatic by product, he turned to the talented distillers at Applewood. The organically farmed figs are gently poached and the resulting syrup is then slowly added to the gin base. Wauchope has since purchased two stills with the intention of creating his own spirits in the future.

Tasting note: [20ml sample] Bright gold. Opens with a bouquet of fresh figs and traditional botanicals. Brief air contact accents hints of lavender, lemon verbena and earthy juniper while the fruit retreats. Pure and creamy with semi-sweet fig flavours dominating, finishing with delicate peel / herbal freshness. Skillfully balanced. Try it with a wedge of lime. 29% Alc./Vol.

    South Australia, AUSTRALIA

    $1499.88 Dozen
    ABV: 69%
When gin became popular during the Prohibition era of the 1920's, most people in the United States drank the poor quality, homemade spirits found in speakeasies. This alcohol -then called bathtub Gin - was the most popular spirit being made in the United States because it was the easiest to distill. What'smore, gin, unlike whisky, did not require any aging in oak barrels which were expensive and cumbersome to store and conceal.

Bathtub Gin was made by placing a large quantity of (often dangerously) low-quality, de-natured alcohol in a home bathtub. The poisons were removed from the liquid to recover ethyl alcohol that was then flavoured with juniper berries, diluted and put into bottles. The highly variable quality of the spirit meant that consuming it in any quantity was a dangerous venture that cost some party-goers their lives. It has also being suggested that the many extravagant cocktails of the Jazz era owe their inspiration to disguising the disgusting taste of bathtub Gin. Thankfully, this is that kind of drink by name only...

Tasting notes: Pours almost water-like with a very pale straw blush and thick legs. Closed at first but opens up with heavy, oily aromas of liquorice root and white pepper in the initial pass with air contact drawing out juniper, smokey cardamom, citrus peel and subtle herbaceous notes. Big, viscous entry leads into an exceptionally concentrated, oily, lemon lozenge, white pepper and dried juniper hit. Fabulous purity and balance. Concludes mouth-numbing, super long and with more than a touch of Fisherman's Friend at the finish. Punchy and about as big as gin gets. 69% Alc./Vol.

Distilled in an affectionately named copper pot still, ‘Peggy’, Red Door is created using the vapour-infused method, which steams the neutral base spirit through the botanicals.

    London, UNITED KINGDOM
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42%

A gold medal winning gin from Doghouse Distillery in London. Made using a wheat spirit base that they distill themselves rather than outsourcing, fourteen botanicals are included in the mix: juniper, coriander, angelica and orris, as well as more unusual green, leafy items such as bay, sage, winter savoury and cardamom. These provide a fresh pine, herbaceousness on the palate. The addition of the West African pepper 'Grains of Paradise' contributes warmth. Given all those ingredients, it's surprising how fruity Renegade is on the nose; Our tasting from a 40ml sample revealed ripe red apples and poached pears over background potpourri. The palate is more classically styled with a tangy combination of pine resin, fresh herbs (thyme / sage) and perfectly tuned heat in a juniper-driven finale that's creamy-yet-dry. There's nice vibrancy throughout, making this very sessionable indeed. Try it with premium Indian Tonic Water and a sprig of rosemary. 42% Alc./Vol.

Considered the first ever 100% Asian Botanical Gin, Royal Sedang is made using a long maceration of chosen botanicals in order to achieve full extraction of flavour components. The production process is a slow and careful one that can take six to eight weeks. Botanicals include lime, lemongrass, ginger, litchi, jasmine tea, coriander followed by a slow reduction with pure spring water. Aromatically, it's described as "...a meeting of Vietnamese and French cultures, reminiscent of entering into a fresh food market in Vietnam or enjoying a fruit breakfast at a hotel bar".

Tasting note: Clear. Asian styled aromatics leading with coriander, ginger root and lemon grass over background juniper. Second pass highlights mandarine. Soft entry with juniper and citrus, leaning towards lemon and mandarin through the tangy, spiced-up finish. Hints of coriander and pepper in a brisk aftertaste. Fresh and exotic. 42.2% Alc./Vol.

We're serious about gin.

Distilleries both small and large from every continent on earth can now lay claim to a Gin. You could be cynical and suggest it's merely to maintain cash flow while more 'serious' barrel aged spirits mature. Gin is easy and cheap. After all, it's just flavoured vodka at the end of the day, right? That line of thinking misrepresents all this spirit can be in the hands of visionaries and fanatics. The freshest botanicals in high quality alcohol result in an exotic amalgam of accents and supporting notes that no white spirit can match. Perfumed complexity and bracing intensity are not the characteristics of every gin we taste - hence, it can't be that easy to achieve. From Navy Strength to organic to sloe gin, browse our range today. A long departure from the once "fuddy-duddy" association of the genre, Vickers, Gordon's and other ubiquitous brands are threatened to be swallowed in a giant yawn by the progressive, quality-savvy new-gin devotee. Trending classifications such as 'New Western' style (juniper evident but not dominant) are gaining prominence as are the use of indigenous botanicals and varied spirit bases, including non-grain. Barrel ageing is also gaining momentum. The vast improvement in quality has resulted in texture rich, neat/sipping friendly spirits. Yet, the traditional English and Dutch styles remain more relevant than ever in honouring the cocktail classics. Learn more today...
