In line with classic London Drys, the freshness of the nose is captured in a whiff of white pepper, pine needles, liquorice root and woody juniper that's mirrored on the palate; Creamy then crisp, a flurry of peppery warmth gives way to juniper and citrus oils; Peel tang rounds off the finish followed by a perfect sprinkling of tingling spice. Easy to like and beautifully integrated, this is a pure, fresh, well-structured, all-purpose gin that works as a mixer but is just as satisfying in Martinis. One of the most beautifully presented gins to come our way in years arrives all the way from the Hebrides in Scotland. Sugar kelp is key to the subtle coastal notes in this beauty - hand-harvested by a local diver from the deep underwater forests of the Outer Hebrides.Managing Director, Simon Erlanger explains, “We worked with an ethnobotanist recommended to us by our Chairman’s daughter, who we commissioned to explore our island’s flora, to see what is sustainable to harvest and what sort of properties they might bring to our gin. After looking on land, she finally turned to the sea and that’s where we found our answers.”
This sustainable ingredient completes the wider aspects of the gin's flavour profile, with other botanicals being Juniper, Coriander, Angelica Root, Orris Root, Cubeb, Bitter Orange Peel, Liquorice and Cassia Bark. It's all captured in a striking glass bottle, ribbed and rippled like the seas of Luskentyre. There are subtle imperfections, dimples and dips to hold it safely while you pour. The label is simple, though no two are quite alike, each individually flecked with fragments of copper leaf and Sugar Kelp. Strong reviews all round with what reads as a premium London Dry with a maritime twist. We received a 30ml sample. The nose has excellent purity with juniper, light menthol, brine and vaguely sappy / resiny notes. Air contact accents orange oils and citrus cough lozenge. The palate follows through with vibrant, peppery flavours suggestive of lemon sherbet and juniper with a zesty mouthfeel, a warming finish and all-round excellent balance. 45% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Tasted neat the lead is a strong floral and piney juniper. This is quickly followed by dry spice almost like fresh nutmeg (this must be a combination of the citrus peel and cassia) rounding out in the linger to a full sweetness with grapefruit notes...The distiller set out to capture the elemental and maritime nature of the Isle of Harris and this gin, from the bottle to the glass, does just that. A genuine sweet-savoury gin, which is quite rare if not unique. Notes from the distillery...The Isle of Harris Distillery is known as 'The Social Distillery', an ethos which embraces the generous character of our island and the people who live here. Although very much a working distillery, we open our doors six days a week, to connect with all those who want to learn more about our story and share our spirit. A peat fire burns at the heart of the building in Tarbert, symbolising the warmth of an Outer Hebridean welcome and the life we are bringing to our wider community. We have built a distillery on the Isle of Harris to be about people and to benefit the people of Harris. In the face of local population decline, we are a creator of sustainable employment and a catalyst for commercial growth. We strive to be symbol of optimism and change and a new voice for the islands, a nourishing source of pride and belonging for the Hearach in all of us.
Nose: A well-defined juniper note with pine needles, immediately followed by the fresh citrus notes of bitter orange, lime and grapefruit. Develops a complex floral note of rose and wallflowers with crushed green herbs, coriander and gooseberry all underpinned by mixed spice. Sugar kelp adds to the complexity and richness and gives a dry maritime note.
Palate: Refreshing gin with good balance between the bitter juniper and pine and the sweet fruit flavours of mango, grapefruit and orange. A green herb flavour has developed of crushed coriander. Distinctive and smooth with a dry, flinty taste.
Finish: Overall a long, clean finish. As the juniper and citrus fade away, sweet vanilla and black pepper remain with a gentle reminder of the sea.

Produced using a malted barley base spirit, Master Distiller, Ian Chang adds “Above all, I wanted this Gin to be refreshing and elegant. Leaves harvested in the Okunoyama tea yard dating back to 1300’s are also used, carefully blended with a secret botanical recipe. The Kyoto Distillery is the brainchild of whisky exporters, David Croll and Marcin Miller (founders of the Number One Drinks Co). The gin they produce is distilled, blended and bottled in Kyoto and is reportedly the nation’s first craft gin. Made in a dry style but with a distinct Japanese accent, indigenous botanicals are what separate Kinobi from the pack. “We had originally started experimenting with 50 to 60 ingredients, but that gave us a gin that tasted too classic,” says The Kyoto Distillery’s head distiller Alex Davies, who had previously run England’s Cotswalds Distillery. “We wanted ours to have a clearly defined Japanese character, so we narrowed it down to a handful of core flavors.” These include yellow yuzu from the north of Kyoto Prefecture, hinoki wood chips (Japanese cypress), bamboo, gyokuro tea from the Uji region and green sanshō (Japanese peppercorn) berries. To add a further touch, the gin is produced in copper pot stills from a rice spirit with water sourced in the famous sake–brewing district of Fushimi. A second smaller still is used for herbal distillations. The local input extends to the packaging: The glass bottles are hand-blown by craftsmen in Osaka. The screen-printed label was designed in association with Kyoto’s oldest maker of karakami (woodblock prints). A must have for any collection (or for followers of Obi-Wan Kenobi) - the name actually translates to ‘The Beauty of the Seasons’. Very limited. Tasting note: Nicely integrated aromas of pine sap and lemon oregano with peppercorn and wasabi-like warmth. Follows through with a concentrated, piney-woody, herbal entry becoming linear, elegant and finely balanced towards the finish. Other reviews... This gin is pretty floral and slightly perfumed, think lavender and violet, followed by a whiff of sweet orange, berries and juniper. The palate is spicy, with soft juniper notes. These include juniper, coriander seed, orange peel, liquorice and lemon peel amongst others. The aroma yields fresh, peppery/woody/root-like, juniper forward notes, muted and leaner in later passes with the emphasis on dried herb / potpourri as well as nuances of cinnamon bark and lemon thyme. Medium -bodied delivery features orris root, coriander seed and pepper over background juniper and late anise. Finishes brisk, lively, warming. Con Limone Gin (700ml)ITALY$74. 99Bottle$899.88 DozenABV: 41%Produced by the Vergano family on the Amalfi Coast in Italy's east, a region known for its food and citrus - in particular, lemons - hence the label statement "Con Limone". Not surprisingly, this is not your typical London Dry. Expect a contemporary, lemon-heavy style. Other reviews... Tasted neat, the lemon is overwhelming and bordering on a sherberty limoncello. That said, add water or more importantly – vermouth / tonic / mixer and the core gin botanicals (juniper, coriander seed) come back into contention. Malfy Gin was always going to be a lemon forward gin – Con Limone – kind of gives that away… but there is a gin under there and while progressive, it would still appeal to any classic gin fans. Blood oranges are a prized variety in Sicily, harvested in November when their rich red color develops in the cool Mediterranean nights. The peels are steeped in alcohol and pressed in a basket press. The infusion is then blended with juniper and other botanicals before being distilled in a stainless steel vacuum still. Expect refreshing citrus with a touch of vanilla. Tart grapefruit and juniper balance the orange sweetness. Try it in a G&T with fresh fruit for garnish. 41% Alc./Vol.

The keynote here is wild Italian juniper along with five other botanicals combined with Monviso mountain water extracted at the village of Crissolo. Established in 1906, the family run distillery is in Moncalieri, just outside the city of Torino - an area famed for its fine wines and spirits. Carlo, his wife Piera and their children Rita and Valter run the show. Beppe Ronco and Denis Muni are the Master Distillers. Manly Spirits Dry Gin (700ml)New South Wales, AUSTRALIA$74. 99Bottle$899.88 DozenABV: 43%Equipped with two gorgeous Holsten stills, Brookvale locals, David Whittaker and Vanessa Wilton are driven to create spirits that capture the diversity of Australian botanicals, exploring above and below the ocean to create that something special. Presently offering two vodkas, a White Dog malt and this contemporary-styled gin, the spirits are meticulously monitored during distillation and rather than computer controlled cuts, Manly rely on well-tuned noses to capture as much flavour as possible. Produced from a wheat base, botanicals for the gin include Sea Lettuce, Pepper Leaf, Anise Myrtle, Finger Lime and Orange Peel. The odd botanical here is obviously the marine addition. It was inspired by Elijah Holland, head chef at "Powder Keg", a restaurant and gin bar in Sydney. He recommended it as a novel 'North Beach coastal influence' for the gin's profile. Tasting note: Clear with thick tears down the sides of the glass. Excellent aromatic lift includes aromas of pine needle, fresh citrus peel (lemon / lime) and delicate white pepper. Dry, cool-mint confectionary-like flavours (Lifesavers?), followed by muted lime juice and a chalky, lemony finish. Light piney aftertaste. All of which is rounded out with the classic juniper back bone. Tasting note: Clear. Rock pools, sea spray and hints of shell fish. Gin - The Dutch invented it, the English refined it, the New World glamorised it, and now , according to most reviews, Martin Miller's have perfected it. "Westbourne Strength", was recently awarded ‘Spirit of the Year 2003’ by the Chicago Beverage Testing Institute (BTI), the world’s largest and most powerful drinks testing institute.
Miller's is London distilled using over eight botanicals and aromatics including selected Tuscan juniper, cassia bark, angelica, Florentine orris, liquorice root, coriander, finest Seville citrus peel, ground nutmeg, and cinnamon bark. The botanicals are steeped overnight in the spirit to allow a greater infusion of flavour. Millers gin is distilled in the traditional way via pot still. This is a time consuming process, but for gin production it is unrivalled. It keeps the 'body' of the spirit high and because of a lower distilling strength the congeners (flavours) are kept within the final product. Millers use a one hundred year old copper still manufactured by John Dore & Co. in 1903. Following distillation, most London dry gins are blended with British spring waters. Miller’s is transported by ship to Iceland where it is blended with glacial lava filtered waters, supposedly the purest in the world. ...Crisp and classic, this gin is ideal for martinis. A light cucumber aroma leads the nose, opening up with more cucumber and juniper on the palate, finishing smooth and brisk on nutmeg and coriander accents.

Citrussy entry is home-made lemonade-like followed by drier, rooty, herbal / mild juniper flavours concluding moderately peppery, fresh and medium long. A graceful entry leads to a satiny, medium-to full-bodied palate with intensely fruity, citrus peel, mild juniper, and exotic peppercorn notes. Finishes very smoothly with a long, citrus and violet perfume fade. An elegantly-styled gin with a nouveau twist on a solid, juniper-driven, London-dry gin foundation.

After several years of sensory research and experimentation with all kinds of wood, the distillers at Monkey 47 have adopted a very traditional approach in the hunt for the perfect barrel-aged gin. Produced a few times each year, this limited edition expression is aged in new 110 litre, custom made, slightly toasted mulberry barrels for 180 days. Long forgotten, the rare wood of the mulberry tree was once traditionally used to mature the finest distillates the Black Forest had to offer. This highly aromatic wood is one the most redolent timbers available. It also contributes to the gin's unique colour and aroma while adding a hint of sweetness. Unfiltered. 47% Alc./Vol.

Sloe Gins have followed the resurgence of their London Dry relatives with new releases appearing from around the globe; including Australia and Germany. If you're new to this quintessentially British recipe, you'll soon realise the two are related by suffix alone, with the majority of brands available producing a sometimes overly sweet, liqueur-like style. There are a few exceptions. Monkey 47 is one.
Sloes (Prunus spinosa) are a close cousin of another stone fruit: the plum, with which they share its reputation for reducing inflammation, calming upset stomachs and soothing kidney and bladder ailments. Typically the berries are picked in the early Winter months and combined with gin and sugar to allow a maceration infusion to occur. The ratio of sugar to gin will depend on each producer and the properties of the fruit's harvest, accounting for varying levels of sweetness and the inherit astringency of the sloe.
As always, the quality and style of gin will play a significant role towards the end flavour. Traditional recipes call for the juniper heavy 'London Dry'. With this new-world approach, the complex yet quirky Monkey 47 Gin has been combined with handpicked sloe berries from the Black forest in Germany. After several good stirs, the final mix is left for a four week maturation period in earthenware containers. During this time, sediment settles to the bottom of the tank. The team employ a hydropress to extract further liquid from the sediment without damaging the berries. The macerate is then drawn out from the top. Many will be happy to know the end result remarkably maintains Monkey 47's trademark character throughout.

Much to his consternation it was almost impossible to obtain a bottle in the States. The only way to get it in Australia is to source it yourself. So we did!
Monkey 47 is definitely on a short list of hard to find but worth-the-wait gins. Produced in the Black Forest in Germany from no less than 47 botanicals (mostly from the region). Unusual ingredients include blackberry leaves, sloes, honeysuckle, pine shoots, cranberries and lingonberries. Following distillation and maceration, the gin is stored for 100 days in earthenware 'casks'. We've just imported a tiny quantity. Beautifully packaged in an old world apothecary bottle. 47% Alc./Vol.Tasting note: [Batch 16 tasted] Crystal clear / slightly viscous. Fabulous aromatics with juniper and lemon sherbet in the opening phase; aeration accents pine needle, potpourri and pepper. Intense but beautifully poised with pine needle, peppery juniper, dried herb and grapefruit flavours unfolding in a slow release surge. Possibly better all round balance in this latest effort? Concludes fresh, pure and super long. First rate. 47% Alc./Vol.
First tasted 2011... Clear with a silvery, glycerous appearance. The initial perfumed burst is of sweet berry / juniper and assorted fresh citrus peel; further aeration releases pine needle, lavender and clove-like scents. Distinctive and somewhat unconventional, some tasters found the aromatics a little cologne like. On the palate, this begins soft and glycerous, gradually building intensity, climaxing in an explosion of peppers; Mid palate is off dry and oily with juniper, lavender, pine needle and spice flavours persisting into the long, very dry after taste. Bracing stuff! 94 points 47% Alc./vol.Other reviews…. Clear. Bold aromas of pine blossoms, exotic peppercorns, candied lemon and orange peels, sage, and sweet bbq rub with a supple, dry-yet-fruity medium-full body and a zesty lavender candy, pepper, powdered sugar, and tangerine sorbet finish. An excellent and unique combination of vibrant citrus, floral, and herbal dimensions. Will be outstanding in cocktails.
"...something I am trying to track down for my personal use, an absolutely extraordinary perfumed, intense, silky gin called Monkey 47, which is made in Germany's Black Forest. Packaged in a small 500 mls bottle, it is not that expensive (approximately $100), but it was a remarkable gin. In Europe it is apparently available at top liquor shops, so if you can find it, it is an astonishing gin."

Established in 2016, the aim of the project is “not just to create delicious spirits, but to make the most flavoursome spirits on the market.” Combining the talents of George Georgiadis, Sean Baxter and Tim Boast, their Triple Juniper gin employs air-freighted berries for maximum freshness. The juniper is treated in three distinct ways, partially steeped, partially in the pot and partially in the vapour. The aim is to capture both the bright and the earthy qualities, and to balance the massive juniper input, a few other botanicals are used: Australian coriander provides brighter citrus and less earthiness than its English or Indian counterparts. A predominate fresh lemon citrus influence with a touch of fresh lime and liquorice adds lift over a root base of angelica and orris. Native pepperberry provides a balancing, savoury element without the heavy menthol finish of traditional peppers. Finally a hint of cinnamon hits just the right amount of warmth. Tasting note: [Batch 1 tasted] Plush and oily, juniper-heavy aromas combine with citrus, fresh sawn pine, coriander, faint anise and white pepper warmth. As part of their 'Dark Series Experiments in Flavour', Never Never Distilling Co. have released the world’s first Grenache gin. Produced right in the heart of the McLaren Vale wine region, ‘Ginache’ contains Never Never’s award-winning Triple Juniper Gin and Grenache juice from grapes picked from Chalk Hill’s Slate Creek vineyard. The grapes were harvested in March from the Harvey’s family plot, not far from the Willunga township. The plot itself was purchased by John Harvey, patriarch of Chalk Hill and was first planted way back in 1897.
A contemporary take on traditional sloe gin, the spice and bright citrus flavours of this gin work wonderfully with the jammy raspberry brightness of the young Grenache character. It's bursting with red fruits and makes an delicious gin and tonic. Alternatively, simply try it over ice with a slice of orange. 38% Alc./Vol.

A vision for a new gin distillery in Brunswick began to take shape after "a few too many negronis at a local bar". As disciples of the craft movement, proprietors, Dave Irwin and Matt Argus wanted to keep it small-scale and local. They waited three years for their custom made, 230 litre Muller copper still to arrive from Germany. It uses a new technology which increases copper contact with the spirit to produce a more pure and aromatic distillate. The team also sought advice from Master Distiller, Anders Bilgram from Nordisk Branderi distillery in Denmark. "We knew we were getting closer to our final recipe, and that we were onto something, when Anders started requesting larger samples to be sent across the other side of the world." Ten botanicals were finally selected out of around one hundred that were tested. The first release of Patient Wolf sold out in a matter of days via a crowd-funding website. Batches have been rolling out ever since. Most botanicals are steeped overnight, including juniper, coriander seeds, cubeb pepper, orris root and tonka beans (native to South America). Ruby grapefruit and aniseed myrtle are infused in a botanical basket.
We tasted the second batch back in 2017, and by all reports, the boys have only further refined their craft. Patient Wolf opens with powerful aromas evoking orris and liquorice root over hints of black pepper. Exposure accents coriander, grapefruit, juniper and ups the freshness. The palate is silky on entry, leading into a viscous, pure, gently warming profile with creamy orris root, sage and coriander followed by a burst of piney juniper to finish. There's a subtle aftertaste of aniseed and white pepper. All up, it's a lively, interesting and cleverly composed contemporary gin that strikes a balance between traditional London Dry and New World styles. You could even say it's "Quintessentially Melbourne". 41.5% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the producers... Bright citrus of ruby grapefruit and fresh juniper are delicately balanced with subtle spice of aniseed myrtle, cubeb pepper, and tonka beans. Bold, complex and aromatic. Since 1793, Plymouth Gin has been handcrafted at England’s oldest working Gin distillery, Black Friars in Plymouth. The distillery was formerly a Dominican Monastery and the final lodgings of the Pilgrim Fathers before they set sail to the New World in 1620.
