Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. Made from 90% own-rooted MV6 planted in 1999 and 10% Pommard clone planted in 2017; 5% wholes bunches and matured in French barrique (25% new). A bright crimson purple. Fragrant and immediately appealing with its aromas of strawberry puree, raspberries and gentle spice. The bright, light- to medium-bodied palate is well weighted with crunchy and refreshing tannins, rounding out a wine that will continue to improve over the next 2-3 years if not longer. A single-vineyard Upper Yarra pinot at this price is a steal. Drink by 2027.

It’s remarkable what can be achieved at 12.5% alcohol. This Upper Yarra Pinot Noir is certainly light, in both colour and flavour-depth, but it has such a keen insistence through the back palate and beyond, and such an array of flavours. Herbs of various description, woodsy spice notes, forest berries and the tang of cranberry and strawberry. It’s an inherently interesting wine, and highly engaging as a result. Drink 2024-2028+

Here too moderate wood frames the pretty essence of red cherries, earth, crushed fennel and clove. Much like the Clos St. Jacques, there is unusually good richness to the vibrant medium-bodied and sappy flavors that exude a bracing minerality on the bitter pit fruit-inflected finish. This is lovely though it presently lacks top flight depth so I would strongly advise allowing this at least some bottle aging to address that need. Drink through 2033+.

The 2021 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) is one of the highlights of the range this year. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of cherries, raspberries, pomegranate, spices, rose petals and orange zest, it's full-bodied, fleshy and seamless, with a layered, complete profile. It derives from a parcel planted in 1920–1921, where most of the old vines remain intact.

The 2021 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has a largely perfumed bouquet with black plum, raspberry and earthy notes, though I am seeking just a little more delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. A bit of wood needs to be eaten up. It has fine depth, though it does not possess the complexity of the 2020 on the finish. However, it should still give 15-odd years of pleasure. Drink 2025 - 2040.

Moderate wood combines with cool aromas spice, violet, lilac, red currant and just enough sauvage character to be interesting. The exceptionally rich and generously proportioned flavors coat the palate with sappy dry extract on the solidly powerful yet suave bitter pit fruit-inflected finish. This is an atypical 2021 as it is more like a 2020 on the palate though without the higher ripeness levels. Excellent development potential here. Drink through 2033+.

There are only seven barrels of the 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques (Domaine Louis Jadot), an attractively sensual wine evocative of cherries, plums, orange zest, smoke and spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a sweet core of fruit, powdery tannins and a penetrating finish, its quality is some compensation for the lack of quantity.

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru shows just a tiny reduction on the nose, reluctantly opening with brambly red fruit, undergrowth and Earl Grey aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. It's quite "racy" in the mouth and a little tarry toward the finish. Presents good depth and length, though I find myself drawn more towards the Gevrey 1er Cru. Just needs to find its "groove". Drink 2026 - 2040.

Although initially restrained on the nose, this opens nicely with time. It shows a medium-deep colour and ripe, lush cherry fruit with a floral edge on the palate. The tannins are firm but not overly so. As it is nearly every year, this is a reliable, rewarding example of this premier cru. It comes from the one hectare the domaine owns in the centre of the Clos. The grapes are destemmed and carefully fermented to achieve this subtle elegance. Drink 2025 - 2040.

A wonderfully pure and equally cool nose grudgingly offers up its combination of red cherry, kirsch, crushed fennel, spice and a smoky hint. There is notably better volume and mid-palate density to the larger-bodied flavors that exude evident minerality on the tautly muscular, youthfully austere and more complex finale. As is usually the case, this is a combination of refinement and focused power that should age gracefully over the next 12 to 15 years. Drink through 2033+.

Aromas of sweet red berries, plums, peonies and spices introduce the 2021 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot), a medium to full-bodied, rich and ample wine with a deep core of fruit, sweet structuring tannins and a long, mouthwatering finish. This cuvée is always a strong suit chez Jadot, and this year is no exception.

The 2021 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru has a wonderful bouquet with transparent red cherry, raspberry and floral notes. This wine is classy and seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins. It's lithe and agile in the mouth with a mineral undertow towards the finish. Often one of Jadot's classiest offerings, this Pougets is no different and one of their stars in 2021. Drink 2025 - 2045.

Lovely, ripe plum fruit aromas with notes of earth and smoke feature prominently on the nose of this firm, tannic wine with fresh acidity and abundant extract. The grapes come from a domaine-owned parcel at mid-slope next to Le Charlemagne. Jadot is the last producer to isolate this lieu-dit, which is often used for white wine. The structure and freshness of this wine demonstrate that it makes a very interesting red as well. Drink 2025 - 2045.

The Lowestoft winery has been on a roll in recent years, picking up major awards here and there.
This wine kept unfurling as I sat with it. There are layers and there are nuances. It’s an autumnal Pinot Noir, almost-but-not-quite a bit tomato leafy, with smoky/reductive characters in play too. Its style is pretty clear. But the fruit is ripe, cherried, strawberried, boysenberried even, and cedarwood oak is beautifully integrated, and there’s a minerally crackle to the tannin. In short, it feels and tastes like a class act, and one that will reward cellaring. The tannin profile itself is of note; a conduit of flavour and a magnetic, binding force, like a river or a stream, pushing and pulling as the wine flows. Drink 2026 - 2034+

Spring winds during budburst led to low vine yields, while cooler temperatures extended the ripening period, this combined with the dry conditions produced some excellent quality fruit. The 2021 Pinot Noir was made from hand-picked parcels from the Lowestoft estate vineyard in the Derwent Valley (74%), the East Coast (24%), and the Huon Valley (2%). Batches were fermented separately in open-top fermenters, with up to 25% whole bunches included. Gentle hand plunging and occasional pump-overs resulted in a vibrant color and lifted aroma. The wine was matured in large-format French oak (30% new) for 10 months before being blended and bottled with minimal fining and filtration.

The 2020 vintage for Luna Eclipse Pinot Noir was highly promising, with successful flowering and a long, dry ripening season, though water stress appeared in some blocks due to the dry conditions. Harvest took place from March 15-30 at Eclipse Vineyard, with fruit primarily from the 1992 Pinot Noir plantings. Fermentation included de-stemming and whole berry preservation, with some whole bunch fermentation. Clay loams with some granite, from around the Yarra Valley. Mac is a bit off red volcanic soils for his wines. I asked him about vintage 2023, and he offers “I fucking love it. Cool, small yields and wet. But good substance. Slow run to ripeness. And maybe the best vintage to date for us.” To paraphrase. Beautiful floral rosy/violet perfume, leaps out of the glass. Her lifetime of experience as a winemaker producing wines from almost every appellation in the Côte d'Or makes her one of the most experienced vignerons and tasters in the region. Lalou selects the Maison wines by blind tasting hundreds of wines each year and selecting from the top wines presented. She does this with no ties or obligations to buy from growers, allowing her to select wines purely based on quality. It is well known that she pays a premium for the wines she chooses, to allow herself to cherry-pick the greatest expressions of each terroir. She stakes her considerable reputation on her expert palate and market knowledge, selecting all the Maison’s out-turn entirely from what she has tasted. Following the initial selection process the wines are then aged at the domaine and selected for release when she believes the wines are ready. This is one of a few houses that can offer twenty, thirty or forty year-old wines that have lain unmoved in the cellar since bottling.

1993 Maison Leroy Saint-Aubin Rouge was released from the winery in 2021. While we do everything possible to ensure back vintage wines are of the finest provenance, old wines are not guaranteed in any way. Be aware that flavour profiles can change dramatically in older wines. If you are unsure that you will enjoy the flavours that come with older wines, we recommend you don't buy them. Fruit from Yarra Junction and Dixons Creek. Another bright, well-made and well-priced pinot from the team at Mandala. A light, bright cherry red. Gently lifted aromas of freshly poached red fruits, floral notes and a hint of forest floor in the background. Equally gentle on the light- to medium-bodied, poised and persistent palate. A delight to drink now and over the next 3–4 years.

This wine smells like a summer picnic in a rose garden – petals galore, ripe red cherries, raspberries and pomegranate with a spicy kick of pink peppercorns. Mount Barrow is an exceptional vineyard at the higher altitude, eastern end of the Mount Barker subregion of the Great Southern region in Western Australia. Subtle oak spice (25% new) and approximately 15-20% whole bunch allows the quality of the fruit to speak for itself. In the mouth, it is seamless, with flavours unfurling like a peacock’s tail – the mark of a great Pinot Noir. Cranberries, redcurrants and freshly grated nutmeg evolve into rhubarb and earthy just-picked beetroot. Lavender, fennel, rosemary and sage drive a savoury herbal note. There is perfectly integrated acidity and powder-fine tannins. The complexity in this young wine promises cellaring will delight. It stands apart from many Australian Pinots for its elegance and Old World-esque flavours that will extend well beyond the flirty berries of youth.
    Drink 2024 – 2034.

Perfumed and lifted aromas of roses, then dried cranberries, red cherries, red plums, vanilla pods, touch of cloves and dried cooking herbs. The palate is supple and generous in its fruit. It has sweet spices, a multi-layered texture, velvety tannins, and an earthy and savoury quality as it closes. This is such an inviting wine with a discerning length. Drink 2024-2033.

Showing off an exuberance of youth with fresh strawberries and cherries, kirsch and a hint of forest floor aromas. It’s very primary, although extra time in bottle will ensure this develops complexity. Juicy acidity, raw-silk tannins and an immediate appeal make it hard to resist now, though. Drink by 2032.

German born Timo Mayer, along with partner Rhonda Ferguson established Mayer in 1999, on the slopes of Mt Toolebewong, between Healesville & Woori Yallock. They produce a small range of hand crafted, single vineyard wines, believing that wines are made in the vineyard and not the winery. All wines are unfined and unfiltered to show the true expression of the vineyard. Vines are often close-planted, winemaking frequently utilises a generous use of whole bunch but most impressive is Timo's cheerful, amusing nature.
Described as giving it the "full beans", this is the 100% whole bunch version of Timo's trademark Pinot Noir. A wild ride on the Timo train, the Dr Pinot has all the sweet and sour, stalky and spice notes that had everyone swooning when his wines first hit the market.

Estate grown, 100% whole bunches, matured in seasoned hogsheads. A bright, light garnet. A slightly riper version of this always perfumed and seductive wine. Lifted aromas of wild strawberry, rose bush bramble and green peppercorn spice precede the gently sinewy, savoury and very long palate. My advice: drink the Mayer Pinot now and over the next five years and then get stuck into this Dr Mayer Pinot. Drink 2025-2035.

The Dr is in town doing house calls. Or some such. All the bunches.
It’s ‘whoa!’ in the green herb, white pepper and mezcal characters! Strap in. Lighter weight, a sluice of red cherry, rose hip cherry, all of this tightly wound with those green herb and peppery notes, skinny in its jive and cinched with ultra fine, silty tannin lending a long, drying pucker post sips. Fragrant, frisky, needs some time to see it elevate, but even now has a slinky swagger that should drag pinotphiles in. Sleek, elegant, personality plus. Drink 2026 - 2036.

When Timo cheered "bring back the funk!", it was this wine that originally delivered on the promise. He's since released the Dr expression which dials up this ethos even further, but his Close Planted Pinot still holds a special place in many Pinot lover's hearts. Wonderfully aromatic and silky, the power of the Pinot fruit can be deceptive here, but there's no mistaking this is one of the Yarra Valley's finest wines each year.

All estate grown with 30% whole bunches and matured in 15% new hogsheads. A light, bright ruby red. An opulent, floral and spicy bouquet where you barely detect the stems. Delicious as a young wine; red fruited and with silky, very nicely balanced tannins. A wine to drink before the '23, but it's also worth pointing out that Mayer's track record with this wine tells us that this will still be looking good five to seven years from now. Drink 2025 - 2032.

A little Gilbert Gottfried here – fun, edgy, a touch shrill, a bit heightened in energy, but well balanced in the end. Perhaps drinking this wine right now is ‘too soon’ too.
Snappy, tart, tense and bright. Red cherry, cranberry drink, pomegranate juice, big dashes of white pepper, green capsicum, faint game meat leaving a little slosh and softness in the vibrancy inherent here. A sheath of sand-storm tannins lending a little tension, the mainstay that the wine feels tight then a little splash of juice to finish, with some powdery grip helping things out. Attractive drinking. Drink 2025 - 2033.

Part of a new range started with the 2021 vintage, the fruit for this Pinot is purchased from the Lusatia Park vineyard in Woori Yallock, in the volcanic terrains of the Upper Yarra Valley.
Unlike Timo's ‘Mayer’ range, this is a different style of Pinot, somehow in continuity with the Gembrook Hill style (where Timo worked as head of winemaking for a long time). Fruit is all de-stemmed, whole-berry fermented rather than whole-bunch, resulting in a delicate, pure and fragrant expression of Pinot Noir.

I’m thinking 2023 was a very good year for Tasmanian Pinot Noir.
It fairly pops with red cherry and ripe strawberry, there’s also some spice, dried flowers and something a little bit earthy, like brown mushrooms, with a just a hint of smoky reduction. It’s juicy and succulent, with cool balanced acidity, and if you swish it around in your mouth, there’s fine emery board tannin that feels very nice, along with a pleasantly sappy edge. The finish is long, spicy and sweetly fruited. It’s lovely now, though likely better again with a couple more years under its belt. Drink 2025-2033+

A reasonably full purple and attractively perfumed on the nose, the floral side of raspberry. There is a light wood reduction too, as not yet racked. Shows even more on the palate, with some tannins too. Still, there is plenty to this Gevrey and once it has reached the right moment for bottling, I think we shall have a good wine. This may be a conservative assessment now. Drink from 2025-2030.

Vines average age 27yo, hand-picked, bunch-sorted on vibrating tables, open-fermented with cultured yeast, 14 days on skins, matured in French barriques (25-30% new). Glorious colour; the bouquet has the complexity you expect from a 20+yo Burgundy with aromas of field and forest floor. The palate is utterly exceptional, with perfect balance and length. The multitude of flavours swirl and dance - red tree fruits, red cherry foremost, plums close behind, thence to field and forest floor, capturing wild raspberry and strawberry. Sam Middleton thinks this will be one of the all-time greats of Mount Mary, and I'm sure he is right. Drink by 2037.

Gee, they’ve turned out a very good Pinot Noir in 2018.
Strawberries, roses, cinnamon toast and biscuits, a whisper of undergrowth. Medium-bodied, autumnal feel, a little rhubarb, coolness and ‘mineral’ feel, finesse to the acidity and supremely ‘elegant’ feel to the wine, fine graphite tannin, and a wonderfully long and fragrant strawberry and spice finish. Gee, this is a special wine. I’m smitten.

Named after Ben’s mother, Valerie, the Matriarch of the Riggs family. 15% of the fruit was kept as whole bunch to add texture and complexity as well as a little bit of tannin weight. The wine was fermented over an 8 day period and then pressed directly to a mixture of French barriques and puncheons with 20% being new oak where it matured for a period of 6 months.

Semi translucent dark red core with black toned edges and a light red hue. Fragrant scents of violet, red to dark cherry and strawberry infused with dried clove evolve out of the glass followed by some forest floor, rhubarb and spicy bramble like notes. Light, fresh and elegant in its flow across the palate, spicy red cherry and strawberry fruits are offset against dried clove, bramble and forest floor elements. A four-vineyard, six-clone blend; 20% wholes bunches, 15% new oak. A bright crimson red. A lifted bouquet redolent of summer red fruits, poached rhubarb, rose bush and white pepper. The energetic palate is light to medium bodied with the wine's fine-grained tannins and bright acidity making for a delicious and refreshing mouthful. Good, nay, great now and over the next 3–4 years. Drink by 2028.

Savoury, supple and spicy with plenty of whole bunch characters threaded through it.

Semi translucent red to dark red colour with black toned edges and a light red hue. Intense violet, red to dark cherry and strawberry scents are offset by a prominent dried clove presence. Smoked meat, forest floor and spicy rhubarb notes are also evident. Savoury red cherry, strawberry and rhubarb fruits carry a strong whole bunch influence with dried clove, smoked meat, forest floor and spice elements extending across the back half. Possessing polished tannins and a supple texture it has a long and very spicy finish.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

A single-vineyard wine planted with MV6 and Abel clones in the late '90s; 20% whole bunches. A bright crimson. Elegant and restrained with aromas of red cherry, rose petals and spices such as Sichuan pepper and star anise together with a little new-oak pencil-shaving scents. The palate is similarly elegant and fine boned and I like the way this keeps building as it sits in the glass. The tannins are superfine and persistent. The most reticent, perhaps, of the five single-vineyard wines but a wine that will no doubt age superbly. Drink by 2032.

Light and vibrant yet powerful finishing long, elegant and energised.

Deep dark red black tinged core with a dark red hue. Lovely nose with a perfumed violet like top notes followed by a mix of red to dark cherry, strawberry and anise aromas. Lending further interest are spicy cedar, forest floor and dried herb scents. Light and vibrant in its feel yet possessing plenty of power, the delicious palate is decorated with sour to red cherry, winter strawberry and subtle anise flavours infused with fresh herbs. Forest floor, spicy cedar and crushed rock like elements sit underneath. Polished yet stony like tannins with a gentle tang to the acidity. Finishes long, elegant and energised.

A single vineyard located right on the water in Port Arlington. All '98-planted MV6 clones; 30% whole bunches, 25% new oak. A deep ruby red. Concentrated with dark fruits, earth, licorice root and a little iodine. Similarly rich on the flavoursome, still closed, but even and well-structured palate that finishes with a burst of robust, meaty tannins. It'll need some time but, rest assured, your patience will be rewarded. Drink by 2035.

Matured in French oak barrels (20% new) for 10 months. Deep dark red core with black shaded edges and a red hue. Aromas of ripe dark cherry, strawberry and anise stream from the glass followed by some forest floor and spicy cedar notes. Rich, concentrated and juicy the palate is flooded with dark cherry and strawberry fruits which overlay a back drop of anise, earth and spicy cedar. Showing ample power and a fleshy texture, it has fine grained tannins and a long, spicy conclusion.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

The first Yarra Valley Pinot from Munda comes from a mix of red-brown clay, deep red volcanic soils, and granite. It is a wine with an alluring and well-composed nose: crunchy cranberries, polished red cherries, wild violets and some lovely vanilla, musk stick, a touch of cardamom, and cedar. The palate is juicy and, once again, well composed on its fruit and oak profile. More apparent is that the blood orange and earthy character, with elegant, granular tannins, giving a texture that reminds me of a chestnut. It is a well-made, balanced wine that is still in its prime. Drink 2024-2030.

Nicolas-Jay was formed by long time friends Jean-Nicolas Méo of renowned Burgundy producer Domaine Meo-Camuzet, and music entrepreneur and Oregon Pinot Noir lover Jay Boberg. Over the years they have both become fond of what Oregon has to offer for Pinot Noir devotees, and at Jay's prompting in 2011 they began a journey that would result in them purchasing the organically farmed estate Bishop Creek vineyard.

Lots of minerals and crushed berries with cherries and stones. Flowers, too. Medium body with iodine and orange peel. Stony and tight. Unfined and unfiltered. This needs four or five years to soften. Try after 2024.

Bright violet. Powerful, oak-spiced cherry and blackberry scents, along with suggestions of incense, star anise, vanilla and musky sassafras. Alluringly sweet and expansive in the mouth, offering intense red and dark berry preserve, cherry cola and spicecake flavors and building smokiness. In a pretty primary state right now. Closes impressively long and gently chewy, with slowly building tannins and repeating spice and dark fruit notes. 50% new French oak. Drink 2024-2033.

Complex aromas of cherry stones, blueberries, wild plums, lemon zest, wet earth and dried spices. It’s medium-bodied with tight-grained tannins. Tight and refined. Better in a year or two. Unfiltered. Drink from 2022.

The first estate vineyard in the Nicolas-Jay joint venture is Bishop Creek, located in Yamhill-Carlton AVA and planted on its own roots in 1988 and 1990. Jean-Nicolas Meo and his Oregon winemaker Tracy Kendall have produced a winning result in 2018, with ripe red and black cherry aromas, a hint of spice, and a texture that is lovely, rich, and dense but not heavy. This wine shows well now but will certainly age for at least a decade. Drink 2021 - 2031.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential.
