Rich, creamy textured white peach, dried honey, crème brulee and cashew flavours flood the mouth, whilst biscuity nougat and gentle spice elements unfold across the back half. Medium to full in body it finishes long, refined and beautifully rounded.

Complex, youthful, varietal and enticing bouquet. Aromas of grapefruit and sweet peach, lemon and vanilla, raw cashew nut butter and layers of lees complexities. Near full-bodied on the palate with fruit, oak and lees flavours reflecting the bouquet. The key with this wine is the acid line accentuating the citrus with grapefruit peel, then complexities from lees and development. The minerality is also a feature with a clay, stone and baking spice qualities. Lengthy, dry on the finish and delicious with best drinking from 2024 through 2030+.

2019 Max Ferdinand Richter Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese (375ml)
    Mosel, GERMANY
    $940. 00
    Bottle
    $11280.00 Dozen
    ABV: 6.5%
    Closure: Cork

Weingut Max Ferdinand Richter produces world-class Rieslings from some of the most esteemed vineyards in the Mosel, and all production comes from estate holdings. The terroir of their steep vineyard sites is generally grey slate with different compositions of ferruginous (Brauneberg), mineral quartz (Veldenz) or clay (Graach, Wehlen, Mülheim) soils; those deeply influence character and flavour of the wines. In order to reduce quantity and increase concentration, pruning is severe and in prolific years a green harvest is carried out in August. The vintage is picked much later than that of most growers and is done entirely by hand. Three passes are done to select the best qualities to eliminate all inferior grapes and to keep perfect botrytis bunches or single berries for Auslese qualities and above. The same attention is paid to all vines from the QBAs on up through the Eisweins.

    Other Reviews....
Based on single berries affected by an early botrytis, the raisin selection of the three-starred Auslese is the 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese. Intense, very precise and spicy on the nose, the 2019 displays concentrated peach, almond and biscuit as well as lemon chutney, tea and ginger aromas. Silky, refined and highly delicate on the palate, this is a super precise and elegant TBA with great precision, finesse and salinity. The sweetness is certainly palatable but balanced by the clarity, precision, finesse and seamless texture of this crystalline and stimulating TBA that is extremely hard not to score 100 points. Maybe later, after some years of bottle aging? This wine has all the potential to become a legend. Bottled with roughly 400 grams of acidity, 6.5% alcohol and high acidity that was at 16 grams per liter in the must stage. 70 liters produced. Drink 2035 - 2100.

This is packed with dried-fruit aromas, ranging from pineapple to dates and figs, but it remains finely nuanced, rather than drifting off into opulence and density. With aeration, some ceps/porcini character appears, too. A super elegant wine, in spite of the enormous concentration and the sweetness that comes with it. The playful, filigree finish makes it really stand out in this category. Drink or hold.

The 2019er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese was made from fully-botrytized fruit picked at 210° Oechsle, and was fermented down to fully noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a hugely exotic nose made of baked pineapple, coconut, mango, starfruit, almond cream, dried fruits, and honeyed elements. The wine is hugely sweet and unctuous on the palate, where a whiff of volatile acidity adds pep to the structure. The finish is long and alluring, but also marked by a touch of volatile acidity at this early stage. This superb TBA may eventually exceed our high ratings, especially as the volatile elements withdraw into the background. What an impressive effort! Drink 2029-2069.

From the overripe and botrytized berries of the Spätlese selection, the 2019 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese is intense and concentrated on the nose, but due to the sulfuric notes, it is far from being as terroir-driven as the Spätlese or even the Kabinett. The fruit is concentrated yet piquant, fresh and elegant on the palate and pure, refined and subtle on the finish due to the crystalline acidity and finesse that represents the JSU. This is an excellent Spätlese that needs at least a decade to age to its full finesse. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. Drink 2035 - 2070.

Plenty of exotic-fruit character from botrytis, but they haven’t made this refined Auslese loud, only more complex and tantalizing. Considerable concentration, but everything fits together so neatly that it comes off as restrained. Very complex, almost dry finish with a hint of vanilla pod. Delicious now, but so much aging potential. Drink or hold.

The 2019er Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Auslese was made from partially botrytized fruit (1/3) picked at 115° Oechsle, and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar (125 g/l). It offers a gorgeous nose made of elderflower, cassis, white peach, coconut, almond paste, fresh pineapple, and loads of citrusy and minty elements. The wine proves stunningly tactile and subtle on the palate, where delicately creamy fruits mingle with ripe yet gorgeously juicy acidity. The finish is all about bright exotic fruits, citrusy elements, and fine notes of cream. This gorgeous sweet wine may seem almost irresistible now, but it will gain from a decade of aging as the sweetness will have receded and given way to more nuances. Drink 2029-2049.

From 80- to 90+-year-old vines in the original plot below the sundial, the 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese is very precise and fresh on the flinty, slatey and crisp fruit bouquet. Juicy-piquant and sweet on the palate, this is a tight and crispy, very intense yet still sulfuric Spätlese from a really great terroir. The fruit is still fresh and precise and was picked together with the dry GG selection, which is picked from the inner part with a higher acidity, whereas the Spätlese is from the outside berries that have more ripeness. The 2019 should be aged for at least 10 years. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. Drink 2030 - 2070.

The white-peach and citrus aromas with a touch of spring blossoms pour from the glass of this classic Mosel Spätlese that has a great interplay of ripeness and cool elements on the palate, leading into a very filigree finish that’s pristine and full of herbal freshness. Drink or hold.

The 2019er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese was made from fruit picked at 95° Oechsle, and was fermented down to almost noble-sweet levels of residual sugar (95 g/l). It offers a hugely aromatic and creamy nose made of pineapple, honey, apricot blossom, almond, grapefruit, and floral elements. The wine develops the creamy side of a refined Auslese on the palate and leaves an intense feel of whipped cream, apricot, honey, and fine floral and herbal elements in the engaging and nicely racy finish. This sweet wine will please lovers of suave yet light-footed and engaging expression of the genre, but needs more than a decade to reach its drinking window. Drink 2034-2049.

Sourced in all the sections of the cru and picked with 270° Oechsle and perfect botrytis, the yellow-golden 2018 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is deep, intense and refreshingly spicy and mineral on the compact and complex lime-zesty nose that reminds me of stewed apricots and sweet fig mustard with lemon zests. Incredibly rich, round and viscous but also finessed, fresh and vital on the palate, this is a highly elegant and perfectly balanced TBA with a long, intense and even stimulatingly vital finish. Compared to the filigreed, more crystalline Wehlener Sonnenuhr sibling, this is far more rich and oily textured, yet I can't avoid taking a large sip again and again, hedonist that I am! Thanks to the lower acidity, this is a smooth and sweet but still fine and delicate TBA that tastes fruity, fresh and highly digestible even at this early stage. All the components are already perfectly interwoven, and it's just a question of personal taste if you prefer to have this TBA sweet and smooth or matured and smooth. It's a marvelous wine in any case. It took a long ferment, until the end of June this year, which might have added a bit more complexity compared to the Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Tasted at the end of July and again in later August 2019 when the wine had already closed. Drink 2020 - 2090.

The 2018er Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling TBA was harvested at 260° Oechsle and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. A whiff of volatile acidity quickly gives way to stunning elements of brown sugar, mango, candied pineapple, bitter lemon, raisin and cream. The wine is smooth yet stunningly multi-layered on the palate and leaves a gorgeously smooth yet precise feel of dried fruits and herbs in the long and juicy finish. The saturating sweetness in the finish still needs to integrate. It could then easily exceed our already very high expectations. Drink 2038-2068.

Luscious yet fresh with a long, elegant finish.

The wines of Moulin Touchais begin reaching their peak after twenty years, and many of the great vintages will take much longer. Vintages such as the 1953, 1959, 1964, 1969 are still maturing. The 1945, 1947 and 1949 have become classics. Moulin Touchais are the only winemakers in the world who give a century long guarantee on the longevity of their wines (subject to being kept under optimal cellar conditions). Looking decidedly more youthful than the 2009 vintage, the 2002 features a bright yellow straw core with gold tinged edges and a pale straw hue. Springing from the glass are fresh spicy pear, bees wax and ripe peach aromas which mix with flashes of lemon butter, honeyed quince and cinnamon. Rich and lusciously textured yet showing remarkable freshness, this is one of Moulin Touchais’ more elegant renditions. Honeyed peach and quince fruits are featured over notions of dried pineapple, apricot and delicate cinnamon spice. Bottles may show some sediment or deposit. One should understand this is due to the traditional filtration process, the main aim being to protect the colour, the bouquet and the depth of flavour of the wine.

Bright golden colour with brassy gold edges and a very pale gold hue. Pronounced brown pear, honeyed quince and toffee apple scents mix with hints of butterscotch, cinnamon and raisins. Broader and showing more viscosity the 2005 vintage, the palate is fat in juicy in texture but not cloying, delivering an intense flavour profile of ripe pears, honeyed characters and baked apple that sit over a back drop of quince, subtle notions of marmalade and spice. Round, luscious finish with a long honeyed drenched aftertaste of pear, baked apple and quince.
Drink over the next 10-15 years.

Not as deep in colour as the 2007, the 2005 has a pale gold core with golden edges. Nosing fills the nostrils with baked apple, honey and cinnamon aromas trailed by ripe pear, quince and spice notes. Beautifully balanced palate with mouthfilling flavours of honeyed pears, baked apples and quince creating a viscous feel. Counterpointing the rich, luscious fruit is underlying fresh acidity which gives the wine a sense of vitality. Traces of marmalade, dried pineapple and spice are also evident. Expressive and pure with an epically long finish.

Ripe and unctuous in feel, featuring creamed peach, mango and guava notes gliding throughout. Stays bright and defined thanks to well-inlaid chamomile and salted butter accents. There's a flattering feel through the finish, with a light marzipan hint starting to creep in. This is just beginning to open up and should cruise for quite some time. Drink now through 2040.

Interesting style in some ways. There’s a lot of struck match character here but there’s also pineapple, butter, citrus and cream. It seems to have a foot in a few camps and so cohesion isn’t its strongest point, but then it’s both mouthwatering and textural and while not necessarily “big”, it does deliver a good amount of flavour. It’s not for everyone. But for what it’s worth, I like it. It’s not bland. And it lingers. Drink 2025-2030.

This is a rather delightful example of Marlborough Chardonnay. It’s somewhat understated but certainly displays some attractive characters. Opens with that typical stone fruit, nectarine-dominated aroma, with a little bit of roasted cashew, a little minerality, and just a trace of morning brioche. The palate is textured, but there’s a lip-smacking acidity which brings it to life. It was naturally fermented, and it displays layered complexity and excellent fruit concentration. The tight, fine minerality will ensure mid-term, medium-term cellaring. Drink 2025-2030.

An explosion of passionfruit and gooseberry flavours with crisp acidity and a long racy finish.

The fruit for this wine was machine harvested at night or in the cool of the morning and immediately crushed and pressed. The juice was then fermented with a variety of aromatic yeast strains in stainless steel tanks - the sole aim being to reflect and preserve the flavours and aromas grown in the vineyard. A small portion of the juice was fermented with a non-saccharomyces yeast and 2% was barrel fermented. After fermentation, the wine was kept in contact with the lees for three months. This classic technique enhances creaminess and integrates flavours.
Brilliant pale straw colour with highlights of green around the edges and a watery hue. Herbaceous gooseberry, passionfruit and grassy asparagus aromas fill the nostrils with hints citrus, flint and minerals also evident. Exploding across the palate is a concentrate of passionfruit and gooseberry with some citrus, asparagus, herbaceous grassy elements and minerals extending across the back half. Crisp acidity with a long racy finish.

Imagine how mind blowing it must have been when the first punchy, but beautifully balanced, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc hit the international scene in the 1980s. This one gives you a hint. It has all the Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc classic aromas whilst retaining elegance. There’s gooseberry and passionfruit, white peaches, mandarin zest, jasmine blossom and soft, green grass. In your mouth it’s all about the freshness. Bright acidity is balanced by a tiny pinch of sweetness. The vibrant fruit flavours move into more citrus, with just a hint of trademark herbaceous notes, and a touch of salinity.  Beautiful concentration is highlighted by the fine citrus pith texture and remarkable length.

A beautifully finessed Chardonnay that combines power and freshness with a refined feel.

From a family who have been managing vineyards in Marlborough since the 1970's, after a significant stint at Fromm winery, ending as General Manager, Will Hoare and his wife Rachel decided to venture out on their own to produce wine from the incredible vineyards they had access to. For this wine fruit was sourced from a block in the central Wairau plains of Marlborough planted entirely with the Mendoza clone around the mid 1980’s. Originally a riverbed, this block is naturally warm during the day, as well as at night, thanks to the radiating effect of the exposed greywacke rock lying beneath the vines. The rock radiates heat up into the canopy, making this vineyard an ideal site for ripening Chardonnay.

Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Showing wonderful aromatic lift, the nose is engulfed with ripe white peach, dried honey and more subtle crème brulee scents which are trailed by some biscuity nougat, cashew and spice notes. The palate features a refined, creamy like textural feel with rich fleshy peach, dried honey and crème brulee flavours filling the mouth. Citrusy nougat, cashew, biscuit and delicate infusions of gun flint lie underneath. Fresh and amply powered it finishes long and beautifully finessed.

Firework flint, lemon oil and yellow peach cheeks. Grapefruit sorbet and cold butter log. Almond milk creaminess with a deft handling of oak on the palate. Cumin, powdered ginger and white pepper. This delivers the charitable dimensions of chardonnay with a breeze of gently rolling acidity and brilliance of a chiselled precious stone. Peach cream and baked meringue on the finish. Drinking beautifully and will age further. Wonderful to see the confidence and precision from a new player. Very exciting. Drink by 2028.

Occhipinti is one of the hottest names in Italian wines, and their tiny production is highly sought after. Situated a mere 15km from the Mediterranean, the vineyards are 250m above sea level planted to Frappato and Nero d’Avola. Winemaking is natural and hands off, with fermentation occurring spontaneously, no temperature control, no fining, no filtration and only minimal sulphur additions at bottling.

Santa Margherita is a recent addition to the portfolio. The vineyard is located 490 meters above sea level, planted to Grillo, and is surrounded by pine forest, oaks and secular olive trees. Arianna Occhipinti gives her Grillo a short 48 hour maceration, before spontaneous wild fermentation occurs in concrete and oval Austrian oak barrels, and the wine is matured for 12 months prior to bottling.

Decidedly savory, the 2023 Bianco Santa Margherita 23 opens in the glass with shavings of raw ginger, dusty dried flowers and a hint of citrusy spice. It is round in feel, with a pulse of saline minerality up front that beautifully contrasts its ripe orchard fruits. Perfumed and exceptionally long, the 2023 finishes with lovely tension, leaving a tinge of young kiwi that fades slowly. The calcareous soils of Santa Margherita ring true in this elegant Grillo. Olivier Leflaive was co-manager of Domaine Leflaive until 1994 before withdrawing to concentrate on his own venture which he started in 1985. Today the domaine produces wine from some 65 appellations with 85% of the production being white wine. One of Burgundy’s most respected producers the estate produces a number of domaine wines from its own vineyards alongside its range of negocé bottlings. The wines are made by Franck Grux and the theme in their wines is elegance and finesse rather than power with restrained use of oak and great purity of fruit.

Delightful white peach and dried honey aromas are intertwined with citrus, subtle roasted almond, nougat and gun flint notes. Tokaji Aszú is a noble sweet wine made by blending dried and noble rotten berries to a dry base wine. Taste and quality of the Aszú mainly depend on the number of hods (puttonyos) filled with dry berries (25 kilograms each), which are added to a cask (Gönc type, 136 liters) of dry base wine. Consequently, the proportion between aszú berries and dry base wine is about 1:1 for a 6 puttonyos Aszú. Aszú Eszencia is made with the same process, and is a classification above 6 puttonyos where the ratio of noble dry berries to wine is more akin to 7-10 puttonyos. This is not to be confused with Tokaji Essencia which is a fermentation of just the free run juice of the dried noble berries as they rest in the vat.

A delicious, slippery textured Pinot Grigio that delivers great value.

Brilliant very pale straw almost water like colour. Pear and red apple aromas mix with hints of honeysuckle and wet stone. Delicious pear and red apple fruits glide across the palate with a slippery textural feel. Excellent intensity with subtle lime and wet stone elements lingering underneath. Brisk acidity with a long gorgeously rounded finish. Great everyday drinking.
    Drink over the next year.

A markedly more restrained nose grudgingly reveals its array of green apple, lemon rind, wet stone and a variety of spice wisps. There is outstanding size, weight and power to the intensely stony big-bodied flavors that conclude in a compact, tightly wound, very dry and youthfully austere finale. This possesses excellent development potential that should allow it to repay at least a decade of keeping. With that said, it's not so backward that it couldn't be approached after 5 or so years. Drink through 2030+.

The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, the only cuvée that was not bottled when I tasted it, has a well-defined bouquet with crushed rock filtering through the citrus fruit, kernals of orange rind and litchi. The palate is well balanced with an aniseed tinged entry, good depth and vibrancy with a dash of spice, stem ginger, on the finish. Excellent. Drink 2024-2040.

Recently racked, not yet on finings, so a little bit unclear to the eye as the lees still in suspension. Something of everything on the nose, a touch of tangerine, a little bit of biscuit barrel. A significant weight of fruit, a good thread of mineral acidity, a little more opulence in fruit profile. A little higher in alcohol perhaps.

A more floral-suffused nose features very bright and fresh aromas of Granny Smith apples, essence of pear and a variety of citrus influences. There is again excellent volume and richness along with even more apparent minerality on the complex and beautifully persistent finale that flashes focused power. This too offers first-rate quality for a villages-level wine. Drink through 2027+.

The 2020 Meursault Cuvée Tête de Murger has a well-defined nose, although I was expecting a little more presence and energy compared to previous vintages that I have tasted over the years. The palate is well balanced and shows more gumption, fine acidity with a touch of ginger, well-defined with red apple, nectarine and orange pith on the finish. Just give it some time for the aromatics to open. Drink 2023-2036.

Bottled late November. Fine pale primrose. The bouquet is notably more backward. I am waiting a moment and then the sense of volume emerges. Significant volume here, a thick but not lush texture, enormous energy, this will need a couple more years in bottle than any of the others.

A cool, pure and restrained nose reflects airy and elegant notes of acacia, green apple, anise and a whiff of citrus rind. There is a beguiling sense of underlying tension to the detailed and mineral-inflected flavors that culminate in an attractively dry, clean and lingering finale. This is fine Meursault villages with the innate finesse of Tillets on display. Drink through 2026+.

The 2020 Meursault Les Tillets has a light white flower and linen scented nose, quite Zen-like at first but gaining intensity with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, fresh and vibrant with a touch of spice on the finish. Very fine, though maybe it just needs a little more mineralité. Drink 2023-2035.

Bottled end November. Mid yellow in colour, but fresh. There is an impressive weight of fruit for this hillside vineyard. Significant volume of fresh fruit, tinged with its usual lime blossom character, and good crisp finish with just the right acidity. Plenty of flesh nonetheless. Nice finale on fresh apple fruit.

A gentle touch of wood sets off elegant, pure and exceptionally fresh aromas of just sliced green apple, citrus confit and discreet floral nuances. There is excellent volume and richness to the bigger and markedly more powerful flavors that brim with both minerality and sappy dry extract on the wonderfully long finish. This is presently very compact and will need time to unwind as well as to develop more depth. Drink 2029+.

Still in barrel unracked and unfined. Full bright yellow with a little cheerful plump toasty oak. The weight shows first, the Corton-Charlemagne minerals come through behind. A wine, which is brooding and biding its time. Very good acidity, plenty of fruit weight. All is there, with as much power as is desirable before losing balance, and a fine long finish.

A cooler and more restrained features prominent citrus nuances on the aromas of green apple, spice and acacia. The sleek, intense, dense and beautifully delineated flavors possess even better depth and persistence on the more tightly wound finale. This could easily compete with many Meursault 1ers. A few green reflections in the pale yellow. There is clearly more weight to this than the other cuvees, the fruit is a little richer, especially at the back where the oak comes into play, but there is enough acidity to support the framework. And a few tannins. Cooked apple to finish.

Here too the wood influence is discreet and easily allows the ripe and airy aromas of apple, pear, olive oil and citrus elements to shine. There is excellent punch and an almost pungent minerality on the youthfully austere and firm finish that exhibits lovely balance. This is a bigger but not finer wine than the Tillets and is also lovely. Drink 2027+.

Paler colour, mixed white fruit on the nose, actually quite discreet. More interest and complexity on the palate, ripe apple notes, some pear too, a little softer at the finish than Tillets. Plenty going on.

Admirably discreet wood influence is a background element on the cool, ultra-pure and airy aromas of citrus rind, white peach and acacia blossom. Here too there is impressive volume to the lacy and notably more mineral-driven flavors that possess a lacy mouthfeel on the sneaky long finish. This is a wine of finesse and textbook Tillets. Pale lemon and lime, the nose is a touch more backward and indeed reductive. Hillside style with its usual lime blossom content, more flesh than some years, but retaining a racy quality. Fine long finish, and no sense of heat.

Very Meursault aromas include those of hazelnut, floral and ripe spiced pear. There is again fine concentration to the more tightly wound medium weight flavors that possess both fine volume and punch on the lingering finale. At present this isn't quite as complex as the Oligocène but that should progressively change with age. Recommended. Drink 2026+.

No new wood is used on wines with more clay in the soil, as is the case here. Pretty pale lemon colour, not much more weight of fruit than the Bourgogne Oligocene on the nose, but with an extra intensity and attractive crystalline acidity behind.
