2023 Occhipinti Santa Margherita (SM) Grillo
Occhipinti is one of the hottest names in Italian wines, and their tiny production is highly sought after. Situated a mere 15km from the Mediterranean, the vineyards are 250m above sea level planted to Frappato and Nero d’Avola. Winemaking is natural and hands off, with fermentation occurring spontaneously, no temperature control, no fining, no filtration and only minimal sulphur additions at bottling.
Santa Margherita is a recent addition to the portfolio. The vineyard is located 490 meters above sea level, planted to Grillo, and is surrounded by pine forest, oaks and secular olive trees. Arianna Occhipinti gives her Grillo a short 48 hour maceration, before spontaneous wild fermentation occurs in concrete and oval Austrian oak barrels, and the wine is matured for 12 months prior to bottling.
Other Reviews....
Decidedly savory, the 2023 Bianco Santa Margherita 23 opens in the glass with shavings of raw ginger, dusty dried flowers and a hint of citrusy spice. It is round in feel, with a pulse of saline minerality up front that beautifully contrasts its ripe orchard fruits. Perfumed and exceptionally long, the 2023 finishes with lovely tension, leaving a tinge of young kiwi that fades slowly. The calcareous soils of Santa Margherita ring true in this elegant Grillo. Drink 2025-2032.
