Walnut Block’s Chardonnay, planted in 1996 with the Mendoza clone, is known for its low yields and ‘hen and chicken’ fruit set which provides a high skin-to-juice ratio, thus resulting in a wine that possesses both depth and concentration of flavour. Maturation takes place in French 500 litre oak puncheons with wild yeasts from the vineyard providing a natural fermentation. The wine is left to develop in barrels for a period of 12 months.

Expressive white peach, nectarine, dried honey and cashew scents sail from the glass with ample intensity followed by some biscuity nougat and spice notes. Walnut Block’s Sauvignon Blanc comes from the estates oldest vines which are trellised on the Scott-Henry canopy system allowing maximum light and exposure. The grapes are all hand picked and grown to a yield of 3.5 tonnes per acre. Fruit is first gently whole bunch pressed and predominantly fermented in stainless steel with cultured yeast. A portion (30%) is fermented with wild yeasts in old French Barriques, which contributes additional layers of complexity and texture.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with a subtle greenish tinge around the edges and a watery hue. A mix of herbaceous gooseberry, passionfruit and lime scents sail out of the glass with some grassy asparagus and delicate spice notes lending further interest. Mouth filling passionfruit, gooseberry and citrus flavours are delivered with terrific intensity and drive. Lime, green apple and herbaceous grassy elements extend across the back half. 2017 DAOSA Late Disgorged Blanc de BlancsAdelaide Hills, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$180. 00Bottle$2160.00 DozenABV: 12.9%Closure: CorkDAOSA's new Late Disgorged Blanc de Blancs comes from the Bizot family vineyard in the Piccadilly Valley, a site that has shaped the estate's most celebrated releases. This 2017 edition is a true long-game wine, spending time in barrel before an extraordinary 90 months on lees in bottle, a regimen aimed at building depth and refinement rather than overt power. Released only in tiny quantities, it sits at the top of the DAOSA sparkling range, offering a rare look at extended ageing in Australian sparkling and the kind of detail that has defined the label's recent reputation.
Other Reviews....
From a single site – the Bizot family vineyard. All chardonnay. Barrel maturation employed. A foamy texture belies the detail of fruit, spice, savoury oak seasoning and freshness here. Summer fruits, biscuits and bread, toast and cinnamon and honey and marshmallow and ginger. Intense, saline acidity and bristling, tight and fine bubbles. A little glossiness of intensity even with the freshness. It's rich but lively, coursing with energy and yet shows off the mature fruit and secondary characters so well. A kaleidoscopic experience, per se. Just straight up fantastic, and a world beater. Drink 2025-2035.

Mike Bennie - James Halliday's Wine CompanionThis is so pure and refined, with remarkable tension and mineral drive. Aromas of oyster shells, sliced lemons, flint, sourdough and white flowers. The palate is tightly wound and poised, with a bright line of acidity and a generous texture cut through by a persistent minerally, saline drive. The freshness is balanced by underlying power, coming from 90 months on tirage before disgorgement in May 2025. Excellent. Drink or hold.

JamesSuckling.comThe Bizot pedigree is evident in this remarkably youthful and fresh aged sparkling from the Adelaide Hills. The creator, multi-generational Champagne/sparkling maker, Xavier Bizot, has grown and assembled a brilliant, seemingly ageless wine. Chardonnay grown in Piccadilly underwent its first fermentation and ageing on full lees in oak for eight months. Its second fermentation and maturation in bottle on lees was for 90 months. Honeysuckle and jasmine aromas swirl and mix with peach, baked apple, spice and almond biscotti with a drizzle of honey. It’s invitingly fresh and complex at the same time. So, too, a palate led by a fine bead, finely textured and dry with a deeply woven complex citrus, stone fruit intensity and background honeyed spices, peach custard, almond spread and biscuit. Acidity holds true, raising the freshness factor and adding extra spark. Drink 2025-2030.

Krug 29eme Edition Rose ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$799. 00Bottle$9588.00 DozenClosure: CorkWhile Krug's Rose Edition wines are non-vintage, Krug prefers to call them multi-vintage given they use a large proportion of reserve wines in the blend. This 29eme Edition Rose is a blend of 29 wines from 5 vintages back to 2010, with the base wine hailing from the 2017 vintage. The base wine comprises 67% of the blend, while 33% of reserve wines are used.
Other Reviews....
Krug’s NV Rosé 29ème Édition blends 29 wines from five harvests dating back to 2010, and like the Grande Cuvée, each component is selected by Krug’s tasting committee through blind tastings. Anchored by the 2017 vintage, which comprises 67% of the assemblage, it gains its color, texture and character from the addition of 11% still red wine from Aÿ-Champagne and Mutigny, sourced from the 2016 and 2017 vintages. The wine opens with aromas evocative of grapefruit zest, redcurrant and apple pie, intricately mingled with a subtle trace of Sichuan pepper and a whisper of rosewood oil. On the palate, it presents as medium- to full-bodied, vinous and textural—albeit slightly less chiseled than its white counterpart. A deep core of fruit, tangy acidity and a long, perfumed finish with a delicate phenolic grip complete this new release. Drink 2025-2035.

Kristaps Karklins - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe NV Rosé 29ème Édition is bright and effusive in the glass. Cranberry, pink grapefruit, white pepper, chalk and mint race out of the glass. In most releases, the Krug Rosé is more austere. This is an especially textured, open-knit Rosé that will drink well right out of the gate. What a delight. Krug ID: 124021. Drink 2025-2040.

Antonio Galloni - VinousLovely pink color. This is really classy and refined. Quite subtle aromas of peaches, pears and cantaloupe with lavender and heather follow through to a medium body. The tight, focused palate has ultrafine texture and a very long finish. Almost never-ending. Fine bubbles integrate beautifully. Drink or hold.

JamesSuckling.comThe NV Champagne 29th Edition Rose is a bright salmon orange color. It is expressive and offers a decadent and opulent nose, with notes of toasted brioche, fresh nectarine, white strawberries, cardamom, and saline. The previous three editions of the Rose had a darker red pigment, but this returns to the paler style that preceded them. In 2017, they used two years of reserve, as the year was particularly challenging for red wine. It fills the palate with a rounded feel, refreshing acidity, a pillowing mousse, and a clean, chalky texture. It will be released this fall. Drink 2025-2050.

Audrey Frick - jebdunnuck.comKrug's 29ème Édition Rosé is expressive, open and spicy on release, and features 67% of the challenging 2017 base year (although some of the red wines hail from the 2016 vintage). Krug relishes the challenge of difficult vintages, however, turning to its reserve library to help bring about a rosé of immediate depth and vinosity. Red plum, dried red berries and roasted spices make a fleshy, open entry, before a tangy, elongating finish is detailed with light herbal and peppery tones. It is relatively forward already, yet seems poised to develop more spicy and roasted savour in the medium term. Drink 2025 - 2030.

2023 Domaine Marc Sorrel Hermitage BlancHermitage, Northern Rhone, FRANCE$399. 00Bottle$4788.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkMarc Sorrel's tiny domaine in Tain l'Hermitage has long been regarded as one of the hill's most classical producers, working from exceptionally placed parcels that have earned the estate a reputation alongside the leading names of the appellation. Now in the hands of Marc's son Guillaume, the approach remains firmly traditional, defined by whole-cluster ferments, restrained use of new oak and patient élevage that often stretches to two years. Production is extremely small, making the wines highly sought after, and the focus stays squarely on transparent, site-driven expressions in both Crozes-Hermitage and Hermitage, including the flagship Le Gréal and the white wines drawn from old Marsanne and Roussanne.

Incredible flinty intensity on the nose, but also ripe apricots, Mirabelle plums and blanched almonds. Then a giant wave of concentration crashes over the palate, but this is so silky and pristine that you beg it to return. The finish is almost perfect. There’s a hint of bitterness from marsanne. A cuvee of marsanne with a small amount of roussanne based on the Greffieres site from relatively young vines. Drink from release.

Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comSlightly darker in colour than the domaine's classic Hermitage. Intense quince and pear, very rich and powerful, but has a dry, savoury, edge and a firm, mineral grind, along with dried honey. Real power in this, which balances the richness. The floral and wild berry beauty of this wine doesn't lie in its enormous concentration and drive, but in the mind-blowing finesse and incredible silkiness of this great masterpiece of delicacy. Where are abundant alcohol and taninns that this unique expression of Hermitage must have? They are in there somewhere, but the wine feels totally weightless. From vineyards planted in 1926 by the winemaker's grandfather in the Les Greffieux and Le Meal sections of the hill of Hermitage. Drink from release.

Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comPowerful, explosive, peppery mulberry fruit. Very smoky in style, with iodine notes and lots of dense, ripe tannin underneath driving fruits. Very tannic, again with some stalky notes from 100% whole bunch. 8% co-planted white varieties, all planted in 1926, the same date as the Rocoules vineyard. Will be epic when it's ready. Hand-picked fruit from the Blackberry Vineyard is pressed without destemming to allow quick drainage. The wine sees some post-ferment lees ageing to add texture to the mid-palate. This wine shows signs of the vintage with its concentrated mid-palate, gentle, smoky development and ripe pear and honey notes. That said, the palate is still fresh and tight, and of all the 2018s tasted, this is perhaps the least evolved. The palate is beautifully cleansing. Take care not to over-chill. Drink by 2028.

Apparently, the designation derived from an original 'Lot A' released only in 1991. For every subsequent release, it's been called 'Lot B'. More on this subject from straightbourbon.com: "I’ve always assumed that Julian III went through his stock of barrels that were older than the 10 year range and took the barrels that he did not think were worthy of continued aging for inclusion in future PVW releases and bottled those as Lot B. With Lot B indicating that they weren’t his best juice. At the time of the 1991 release of course there was no such thing as PVW as it hadn’t been released yet. I believe the first ever PVW release was in 1994. So maybe in 1992 he had decided that he would start setting aside his best barrels for future super premium older releases, and decided to start bottling those that didn’t make that cut as B then?"
One responder who actually emailed Julian Van Winkle for an explanation confirms: "It's pretty much to that affect, Lot A was small and ran out quickly. Lot B was much larger and by time those barrels ran out, everyone got so used to his 12 year old release being called Lot B that the name stuck so as to not confuse anyone." Hence, the designation is pretty much meaningless, except from an historical perspective.
Other reviews... For those who like their Bourbon hairy, bristling with spice, honey and big oak interaction.

...If you haven't had a lot of experience with American malt whiskeys, this one might be a little bit of a shock for you. While it has flavor similarities to bourbon, there’s no confusing the two. Light notes of toffee and butterscotch are present alongside notes of grass and cedar. Even though the mashbill consists of 65% malt, the sweetness from the corn still pulls through. This creates an interesting interplay between the sweet and oak notes. Overall the palate’s flavors are on the mellow side, which makes it very drinkable, though I do wish it had more richness in its flavors. It might not be a very complex palate, but all of the flavors do an ample job of standing out on their own......At 108 proof, the finish is surprisingly smooth and very drinkable. It rapidly expands and contracts in your mouth and then lingers for a good amount of time afterwards. Oak once again dominates, but the other flavors from the palate blend together and help counter the oak’s at-times brashness...It’s a nice oak-foward finish with just the right amount of accompanying flavors to produce a satisfying conclusion... 3.6 out of 5

GC is Nick Farr’s tribute to his father Gary and what he has achieved in the Geelong region and also what he has contributed to Australian Chardonnay and Pinot Noir over a 40 year career. The wine is matured in French oak, 35% new, for approximately 10 months.
Other Reviews....
This wine was surprisingly delicious straight from the fridge. Likewise, straight out of the box the wine was also wonderful. It showed me the complexity of the wine and the depth of flavour too. A wine balanced with acidity and richness. There are notes of lemon and vanilla custard, chantilly cream and dry tropical fruits. Despite the two notes of dairy, there is nothing garish about the wine, nothing buttery or overblown. And, whilst it is full of flavour, so much of that generosity is driven by ripe fruit and beautifully handled acidity. The GC chardonnay is a wine that offers Chardonnay expression with flavour, and it does so unapologetically. There is, thankfully, a way for these top end wines to taste of the grape that makes them, without the baggage of winemaker artifice.
I’ve spoken before of the hand of Farr, and the ease with which these wines dance so intricately and beautifully with the appearance of ease. It is this simple elegance that is the skill, and the intricate complexity, that doesn’t appear to be so, that is the joy. As always the GC is a benchmark wine for Chardonnay lovers.
Ben Knight - 2023 RP By Farr Pinot NoirGeelong, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$170. 00Bottle$2040.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: Diam Cork
The initials RP stand for Robyn Pamela, Nick Farr’s mum and matriarch of the Farr family. The fruit for this wine is sourced from the Côte Vineyard, it’s a close-planted parcel on an exposed slope, with hillsides facing north, northeast and east comprising of the most suitable clones, rootstocks, trellising and management you’ll find on the Farr’s landscape. Fruit is handpicked and sorted in the vineyard, then fermented in an open-top fermenter. Between 40 to 50% of the fruit will be destemmed and then cold soaked for four days. Maturation takes place in 50 to 60% new Allier French oak barrels for 18 months.
Other Reviews....
The nose of this wine is endlessly complex, as the previous wines were, but it is more fully resolved. In that I mean it is riper, less herbal, softer and more fully formed. The wine makes you salivate, and is the very type of wine that helps define vinous descriptors like “peacocks tail”. In the abstract sense, these words, like so many others, seem like flummery, but the description comes from the sense of a broadening and greater intricacy, and indeed volume, that the wine exhibits. It is how the wine delivers more beauty towards the “end” of the palate, as it is swallowed. The RP is seamless. I can’t find anything to fault in the RP, it is luxurious and the zenith of Pinot Noir expression in my opinion.
Ben Knight - 2023 Tout Pres By Farr Pinot NoirGeelong, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$170. 00Bottle$2040.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: Diam Cork
A touch over 2.5 acres, the Tout Pres vineyard has three individual soil types across a three-sided cirque (an amphitheatre-like valley head) that rises above the other vineyards. Each slope consists of a soil type. The largest slope is black volcanic soil of limestone, the second is quartz gravel mixed with red ironstone soil and the third, an iron strand in grey sandy loam. Being the most densely planted vineyard on the estate the soils and intense competition force the vines to work hard, resulting in fruit that is lush but masculine and provides the coveted structure found only in the most age worthy wines. Tout Pres is fermented with 100% whole bunches and is matured in 100% new Allier French oak.
Other Reviews....
Tout Pres always seems more delayed in how it reveals itself. This shyness most obvious in the nose, not least as that’s the first interaction you have with it. The wine always sits a little lower in the glass than the others, it feels just out of each. The palate gives more immediate notes of peppery spice, not pepper so much, but a prickly, tighter spice with a little more attack. There is a dried earthy note here, some cola, dark cocoa and black cherries. It feels almost brittle at times, certainly in its youth, but you wouldn’t mistake that for delicacy. It’s hard to describe it, but the wine is confident and deliberate, but there is something about this wine that is fragile too. The chalky texture of this wine, paired with the crisp yet fine acid, couldn’t be better. I imagine is this part of the wine gives that sense of fragility, it feels like the wine snaps on your tongue. I love it.

The colour for this first-rate wine shows a brilliant, bright red and slight crimson hues. The nose captures the varietal spices and the dark, plummy blackberry notes that you expect, with a little meaty game. The palate opens to reveal ripe red fruit characters, with just a hint of spice and a touch of ironstone. Tannins are slightly chalky, and the oak is neatly engaged, as a result of 13 months in new and seasoned French oak hogsheads. This well-made beauty is also clearly built to repay extended keeping. Drink through 2035+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundBack to a slightly lighter ruby. Perfumed on the nose, a little salinity on the palate, more in a slightly sombre red fruit, some tannins behind, a touch of liquorice. Plenty happening but not quite in place today. Drink from 2032-2038.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside Burgundy - 2023 Laurent Roumier Bourgogne Hautes-Cotes-de-Nuits BlancBurgundy, FRANCE$135. 00Bottle$1620.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: Cork
Laurent Roumier is the grandson of the legendary Georges Roumier and his holdings originate from that grand old estate with more recent additions of 6 hectares in the Hautes Cotes de Nuits being purchased in the 1990s and further purchases in Chambolle-Musigny. His father Alain was the cellar master for Comte de Vogue for nearly 3 decades before taking his portion of the family vineyards to farm for his own family. Wines here appear stylistically very similar to those of Georges with even the same barrels and oak used as his cousins though one notable difference is that Laurent mostly de-stems giving wines that show excellent depth of colour and which are more immediately perfumed and accessible in their youth while still having ample depth and structure to age classically.
The vines are on average 35 years old, and they are farmed traditionally and naturally, with neither fertilizer nor herbicide. Green harvests are carried out in the summer when necessary. All of the vines are harvested by hand. In the cellar, the work is carried out with the same level of precision. The grapes are entirely destemmed the vinified in concrete vats. Alcoholic fermentation lasts around 15 days, with pumping over and punching down every day, and the temperature is checked every day. When it comes to pressing, the team decants the wines for 12 hours in vats and then barrels (50% of which are new for the grand crus and the premier crus, 30% for the villages and 10% for the Bourgogne Hautes-cotes-de-nuits). The elevage lasts 15 to 18 months, with the barrels (mostly Tonnelerie Rousseau) being topped up once a week and racked two or three times during the entire period of elevage.
From a tiny parcel of vines 0.71 ha is planted to Chardonnay in the chalkiest most limestone soils in the La Poirelotte vineyard located higher above Chambolle village vineyards.

Laurent's Chambolle-Musigny comes from five parcels of vines planted between the 1960s and 1990s with an average age of 35 years old. Chambolle-Musigny gets its reputation for perfume and elegance and this is textbook Chambolle yet also with admirable intensity and generosity.
