2023 Domaine Marc Sorrel Hermitage Blanc Les Rocoules
Marc Sorrel's tiny domaine in Tain l'Hermitage has long been regarded as one of the hill's most classical producers, working from exceptionally placed parcels that have earned the estate a reputation alongside the leading names of the appellation. Now in the hands of Marc's son Guillaume, the approach remains firmly traditional, defined by whole-cluster ferments, restrained use of new oak and patient élevage that often stretches to two years. Production is extremely small, making the wines highly sought after, and the focus stays squarely on transparent, site-driven expressions in both Crozes-Hermitage and Hermitage, including the flagship Le Gréal and the white wines drawn from old Marsanne and Roussanne.

The ideal marriage of finesse and controlled power, this has a scented nose of preserved lemons, wild herbs, dried peaches, raw almonds and a subtle touch of mild spices. Medium-bodied with a fresh center-palate of perfectly controlled dried-citrus bitterness touching the silky, almost seamless texture. Harmonious, so flavorful and well-composed, it has perfect balance and a long, long, enchanting finish. From vines planted in 1926. Drink or hold.

Slightly darker in colour than the domaine's classic Hermitage. Intense quince and pear, very rich and powerful, but has a dry, savoury, edge and a firm, mineral grind, along with dried honey. Real power in this, which balances the richness. Drinkable now, but will age very well thanks to its salinity and extract. Very long. Drink 2025-2039.
