The distillery's French Oak Second-Fill casks have a history as rich as their flavour. Initially serving as first-fill ex-Tawny casks for an earlier batch of single malt, the best casks are then selected for a second round of maturation, hence the title "Second Fill" or "Re-fill". Because their impact on the flavour profile is muted, refill casks make a good canvas for showing off distillate character. In fact, they're a staff favourite at the distillery for that very reason. French Oak Second Fill TD0374 was distilled in October of 2012 and decanted in July of 2025 maturing at 12 years and 8 months in a single 300L French oak ex-tawny cask previously filled with an older batch of Sullivans Cove. The nose offers a dryish arrangement of bitter dark chocolate infused with hazelnuts, touches of orange zest and elderflower; the flavours are discreet and more difficult to pin down, presenting a curious interplay toasted grains and semi-ripe fruits (kumquats?), finishing with a citric bite, spicy oak, traces of dried apple and cocoa in a medium long aftertaste. The outturn was 531 bottles at 46.3% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.
Notes from the producers... Nose: Rich brown sugar, molasses, dark rum, spice, cherry tart and cocoa. Palate: Light, syrupy and subtle, with vanilla cream, bubble gum, watermelon and cotton candy. Finish: Lingering and creamy, carrying strawberry, pink donut, apple turnover and coconut icing. The style here is summed up as “...a whisky of contrasts: the nose suggests weight and intensity, while the palate is restrained and delicate. The flavours develop slowly, bridging the gap between the richness of the nose and the softness of the finish. A quietly engaging single cask, where the dark and sweet elements meet in a balanced, evolving way.”

From the home Bracken vineyard, the fruit is serious, from Blewitt Springs’ famous sandy soils, yet the mandate is early engagement and ready drinkability. Red fruits, cranberry, redcurrant and wild raspberry, along with a little black cherry, some anise, cola, cinnamon and amaro herbs. All is set at a medium pitch, accessible, approachable and delightful to drink, the structure supportive of standalone drinking and application at table. Drink by 2029.

The Ackland Vineyard is about to celebrate its 50th anniversary since it was planted and over that time it has provided some superb fruit for classic Clare Valley Rieslings. It is situated in the Watervale sub-region. A negligible hint of lemon, otherwise the colour seems next to invisible. A fresh and pristine style, there is elegance here. Clean and lingering, with notes of limes, a touch of pear, white jasmine and some wet slate. Finely balanced with serious length, this is tightly wound and will easily handle another two decades in the cellar. Love it. A cracking Clare Riesling. Drink 2025-2045.

It tastes of river stones, lime, steel, curry leaves and alpine herbs – the latter of which gives the wine an aromatic prettiness – though the emphasis is clearly those on cool citrussy tones. It’s the overall intensity of flavour though that really impresses, combined as it is with dramatic length. This will drink well for a decade or more.

A restrained and attractively nuanced nose is comprised by a plenitude of citrus elements along with pretty floral wisps that are wrapped in moderate but not intrusive wood influence. There is fine volume, richness and power though not nearly the same refinement as the Blanchots or Montée de Tonnerre while delivering excellent depth and persistence on the robust and muscular finale. This is an impressive Bougros and one that should repay up to a decade of keeping. Drink through 2031+.

Lot 148 was the family’s first vineyard way back in the day. From what was a very good year, this is a Merlot of some style. The nose captures the reds of fruits of raspberry and mulberry augmented with a slightly earthy ironstone character. It works well. The palate is medium-bodied but concentrated, revealing expressive fruits sprinkled with spices. It’s a vibrant and lively wine with the fine chalky tannins directing through to the sustained finish. This historic large estate, situated atop the Gironde in Saint-Estèphe, is renowned for producing some of Bordeaux's most exceptional and enduring wines. Over the past 15 years it has enjoyed significant investment, resulting in the establishment of a state-of-the-art winery and cellars. Substantial efforts have also being made in the vineyards. When Olivier and Martin Bouygues acquired Château Montrose from the Charmolüe family in 2006, the property boasted 17 hectares of pre-clonal vines dating back to the early 20th century. Through a meticulous massale selection program 80 promising clones, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, have been identified for replanting purposes. Similar endeavors are now focused on Merlot, utilizing a plot behind the château acquired from Phélan-Ségur. Additionally, experimental cover crops are being introduced, and cultivation techniques are being adjusted to minimize disturbance to the soil microbiome. The winemaking approach remains traditional, with macerations lasting approximately three weeks and maturation taking place in around 60% new oak barrels.

Full-bodied, dense and elegantly muscular, it's layered and multidimensional, with a prodigiously concentrated core of fruit, exceptional quality of tannin and a long, resonant finish. The 2025 is a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, derived exclusively from the estate's historic core on the fourth terrace situated just in front of the château itself. With a pH of 3.65 and 13.4% alcohol, it remains classically balanced despite its impressive power and intensity. Readers will have a fascinating time parsing the nuances of style and quality between the 2025, 2023 and 2022 over the decades to come!

The 2025 Montrose only comes from the Terrace IV, as has been the way since the 2023 vintage. It was picked from August 29 and finished not until September 20, so quite a long harvest, 16 days of picking between those dates. This vintage is matured in 60% new oak. This has another very intense nose with a potent graphite element that infuses the black fruit, beautifully defined but unapologetically classical in style. Wow. The purity of fruit is exceptional. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, very chiselled tannins, exquisite black fruit loaded with minéralité. So much freshness and vibrancy, gentle but insistent grip, very precise and refined on the finish, this is a Montrose that will rank as one for the ages. Wow (again). Drink 2032-2060.

A magical, utterly profound wine in the making, the 2025 Château Montrose is a classic blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc that will spend 18 months in 60% new French oak, with 12% press wine included in the final blend. Pure cassis, graphite, liquid violets, and spicy wood define the aromatics, and it's sensationally pure on the palate, with full-bodied richness, beautiful concentration, ripe, polished tannins, incredible class, and a great finish. It reminds me of the 2016 with its finesse... and maybe there's a touch of 1996 here as well.

Vibrant purple colour in the glass. Amazing fragrance, so pure and crystalline – blackcurrants and violet notes. Silky and glossy, packed full of cherry and strawberry fruit with quite massy tannins but keeping a really cool and compact form. Structured with layers of elements but also a little granular, tight and spiced. Liquorice, cool cola and wet stone edges. Maybe less overtly charming and filling than in previous years, but this has a distinctly cool mineral edge and slightly grippy tannins on the finish. I like the style, it’s quite serious and terroir transparent. Ageing should soften this and relax a little. 3.65pH. 80 IPT. 12% press wine. Ageing 18 months, 60% new oak. Drink 2034-2050.

Montrose is on quite the run. Just when you think they cannot produce a better wine, they come out with the 2025! This is the third vintage produced entirely from vines planted in Terrasse 4. The wine blends 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc. 13.4% ABV, pH 3.65 pH. Harvesting took place August 29 - September 20. This is the earliest start to harvest in the history in the history of the estate. Yields were 30 hectoliters per hectare. Drink from 2032-2070.

From an excellent, cool vintage, this has the extra fruit gravitas befitting an estate bottling, rather than the classic range, along with a more robust cladding of oak. But there’s a measured quality to it, a linearity of shape in harmony with a certain boldness of fruit, with blackcurrant, mulberry, spiced plum, currants, mixed spice, graphite, cedar and de rigueur leafiness. It’s a fine expression, composed, flavourful, structured and varietally en pointe. Drink by 2031.

By now, most wine lovers will be all too aware that 2021 was a stellar vintage in regions like McLaren Vale. Anyone without a good representation in their cellar should move quickly to rectify that (and those who have been wise could do worse than replenish or add to their stash) as they won’t hang around forever. This cracking Cab is a fine place to start. 20% of the final blend spent three years maturing in older American oak hogsheads, with a further 30% spending its time in new French oak. An inky dark maroon hue, the nose gives us notes of chocolate, dried herbs, bay leaves, cold tea, coffee grinds and blackberries. There is oak evident, but it is deftly handled and adds a pleasing vanillin touch to the final wine. Already delicious, this has at least another ten to fifteen years ahead of it. Be in no rush to open yours. The wine has a line of juicy acidity, sleek tannins, very good length and some serious persistence on the finish. Lots to like here. Drink 2025-2040.

We have a winner here. This is crisp and elegant and textural and long, and throughout it just simply tastes good. It’s as good or better than any Bellvale Chardonnay I’ve had previous. This luscious 21 Year Old Tawny is made from old vine varieties including Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Muscadelle. This is very promising. It’s also very good buying. There’s often something about Gippsland Pinot Noir that just has that extra in-built hard-to-put-your-finger-on complexity.
This smells the goods and backs the promise up on the palate. It’s a light-and-insistent style but there’s plenty going on and it’s beautifully well sustained. Flavour-wise this wine is built on fruit and undergrowth with spice, orange rind and earth-like notes studded within. It has (fine) tannin, it has texture, it has X-factor. Drink 2026-2033.

The team source the fruit used here from three different McLaren Vale vineyards – the Lower Tintara Vineyard, originally planted by Thomas Hardy in the 1880s (it is located on the well-known Kays Road), although this block was planted only two decades ago; the Picnic Grounds Vineyard, which is adjacent to Lower Tintara (it was originally owned by Thomas Hardy); and the Price Vineyard, located at what the team call the gate to McLaren Vale. Each batch was processed discretely, and blending took place just before bottling, after barrel selection. Maturation was for twenty months in new and older French oak hogsheads. Black blood red with a dark purple rim, this is generous and approachable and really does have a good future ahead of it. Finally balanced with aromas of chocolate, root vegetables, bay leaves, mocha, dried herbs, blackberries and tobacco leaves. There is a dense creamy texture through to satiny tannins and seriously impressive length. Delicious now and should remain so for the next fifteen years. In a portfolio with some really good examples of McLaren Vale Shiraz, I’m not sure this one should stand out quite as much as it does, but who’s complaining. Astonishing value. Drink 2026-2041.

Showing outstanding intensity and drive, this super scrumptious Sauvignon Blanc is one of New Zealand’s best.
Sourced from eight estate-owned vineyards within the Wairau Valley with vines on average 28 years old. The fruit is whole bunch pressed to tank for fermentation and matured on lees for 5 months before bottling.
Brilliant very pale straw almost water like core with green tinged surrounds. Pungent nose with aromas of passionfruit, gooseberry and kiwi fruit leaping out of the glass. Some herbaceous grassy, grapefruit and flinty mineral notes are also evident. Super scrumptious, the palate is lined with zesty passionfruit, gooseberry and kiwi fruit flavours with some subtle herbaceous characters, lime and mineral elements lying underneath. Showing outstanding intensity and drive it finishes with crisp acidity and a long lip-smacking finish.

A wine that catches you off guard with its familiar waft of candle wax and sparkler flint. There’s a wistful white floral aroma of frangipani and freesia drawing you in. As it opens, notes of pomelo, white pear and pineapple emerge. The wine then lights up like fireworks – the soft, sparkling kind – revealing hints of lemonade, yellow melon and a glittering acidity that is carefully bridled. Nuances of celery heart and fresh ginger follow, adding complexity. It is exquisite in its balance – teetering tropical notes, the fragility of herbal suggestion and an utterly moreish finish. Each spring in Normandy, the Alleaume family hangs thousands of empty glass carafes in their apple orchards near Gonneville-sur-Honfleur. Over the summer, a tiny apple grows inside each one. Timing is everything, as the fruit must be introduced at precisely the right moment to fit through the vessel's narrow neck. By September, the carafes are harvested, cleaned, and filled with Calvados. Even after 30+ years of practice, only 40% of carafes hung yield a bottle fit for sale. But as founder Christian Drouin says: "Our first year, the success rate was just 5%. It wasn't zero, so we decided to persevere." As the apple macerates in the spirit, its fresh fruit character melds beautifully with the brandy, resulting in one of the most vibrantly fruity expressions you'll ever taste. Once opened, you can continue to top up the bottle with Calvados. Doing so will keep the apple glossy and preserved indefinitely. 40% Alc./Vol.

Located in the north-west sector of Chablis in the village of Maligny, Pierrick Laroche runs this family estate which was established by his father in the 1970s. After getting a degree in oenology from Beaune, Patrick travelled the world, doing various internships to gain experience before returning home to start making wine and take over the family vineyards for himself. In 2010 he ceased selling grapes to the local co-operative and produced his first vintage to great acclaim.
The domain has nearly 12ha of Petit Chablis, classified as such because the limestone tends to be the younger Portlandian rather than the older Kimmeridgian, and as such typically occupies higher sites (Portlandian overlies Kimmeridgian) and has less clay. Pierrick is convinced that his largest parcel of Petit really ought to be classed as Chablis; it makes wine like Chablis and indeed is surrounded by AOC Chablis vines.
Refreshing and gorgeously shaped with a classic Chablis oyster shell like salinity.
Brilliant pale straw colour with glistening green tinged edges and a watery hue. Attractive pear, lime and green apple scents are highly expressive in their flow out of the glass complimented by some wet stone, faint dried honey and a classic Chablis oyster shell like salinity. Vivid pear and lime fruits carry a river stone like mouth feel across the palate. Lending further nuance are infusions of fresh Mediterranean herbs, green apple, wet slate and an oyster shell like minerality. Refreshing acidity with a long, gorgeously shaped, saline laced finish.
