Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

Arguably the star of the village of Chassagne-Montrachet, Jean-Claude Ramonet is the third generation to have run this truly great estate; carrying on a great reputation, rather than building or re-building. Fruit from vines under 18 years old is excluded from the domaine's cuvées, and yields are severely restricted. The wines are vinified using traditional methods and then aged in oak (33% new) for 12-15 months. The Montrachet is aged in 100% new oak. There is no battonage but there is extended lees contact prior to the first racking.

The 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean (Rouge) offers up a deeper-pitched bouquet, featuring wild plums, raspberries, rose hips, licorice and orange zest. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and succulent, with a sweet core of fruit and melting tannins.

This is the first wine to display any appreciable wood and even here it's subtle on the ripe and layered aromas of poached plum, cassis and pungent earth. There is excellent density to the powerful and palate staining flavors that flash a touch of bitter chocolate on the beautifully persistent finish. I would note that while this is very definitely built to repay extended cellaring, it should be reasonably approachable after only 7 to 8 years or so. Drink through 2035+.

Tasted from barrel, unracked. An even purple, not the deepest. Thee follows a quality nose, quite perfumed with a little vanilla, seductive. Fills the mouth in dark raspberry fruit enlivened by a little whole bunch feeling (50% used) that really opens up the profile of the wine. A long harmonious finish.

A more elegant and notably spicier nose combines notes of red and dark berries along with an interesting hint of orange peel character. There is more refinement, if not the same concentration and power, to the medium weight flavors that possess a seductive texture and particularly so on the balanced, lingering and already nicely complex finale. Drink through 2032+.

Assembled in tank. One third whole bunch vinification was used. Dark purple centre with a slightly lighter rim. A solid rich heady nose, partly the vintage and partly the proximity to Vosne. Intense, linear, then a little bit headier behind, and some new wood showing. The tannins are fine and plenty of juice remains. Between optimum and maximum ripeness.

Here the nose is noticeably riper yet still agreeably fresh with its array darker berries, spice and discreet floral hints, especially violet. The middleweight flavors are rich to the point of opulence thanks to the abundance of sappy dry extract that enrobes the supporting tannins on the sneaky long finish. This is a very good wine for its level though it would be fair to observe that it's not a typical Chambolle villages. Drink through 2026+.

Tasted from barrel, unracked. As always, this is the ripest in the cellar but not too obvious at 13.8%. Concentrated deep purple. The power blocks the nose a little, then a good weight of fruit shows up behind on the palate. Darker fruit, more in the ripe cherry mode at the back of the palate, a tiny bit drier but not by much.

A restrained, cooler and slightly more elegant nose is comprised by notes of ripe red currant and a hint of forest floor character. There is even better underlying tension and fine delineation if not quite the same mid-palate density to the medium-bodied flavors that display a subtle bead of minerality on the lingering and dusty but not really austere finale. Tasted from barrel, unracked. Deep rich purple. Quite a ripe nose but forthcoming and in raspberry mode, so not too much. Should freshen up with a racking. A little on the dry side behind, could perhaps use more fruit through the middle. Good length, and pure enough to finish.

A slightly riper, and more deeply pitched, nose features a mix of both red and dark currant and more prominent earth wisps. Tasted from barrel, unracked. Not quite as intense a colour and the bouquet is just a little bit more open. A mix of deep raspberry and some blacker fruit. Silkier here and with good acidity. A step above the bulkier Montagne. Good long finish.

Here the nose is moderately reduced so be sure to give this some air if you're going to try a bottle young. Les Condemennes ripens very quickly but now they know and pick here first. Rich purple, with a bouquet to follow suit. Sunny ripe dark fruit but less exaggerated than the 2018 last year. Stops short of raisins but will suit those who like the riper side. Fair length, slightly less acidity, but attractive, and balanced enough.

Initially there is a touch of reduction though some aggressive swirling progressively helps to reveal aromas of spiced plum, dark berries and a hint of underbrush. There is both better volume and density along with a more refined texture to the succulent and suave medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a serious, youthfully austere and impressively persistent finish. Mid purple, with a no more intense but slightly more refined bouquet. There is a delicious sweetness of deep raspberry fruit, stretches well across the middle, very pure, which shows the class of the vineyard without quite matching the character of the Confuron Chaboeufs.

This too flirts with reduction though once again aggressive swirling lifts it to reveal spice and floral nuances on the red and dark currant-suffused nose. There is excellent vibrancy to the super-sleek, well-detailed and utterly delicious middle weight flavors that culminate in a highly complex, classy and sneaky long finish where a touch of bitter chocolate slowly emerges. This is lovely and a wine that should age effortlessly. Drink from 2031+.

Fine deep purple, the nose just suggests an immensity to follow, but it retains its restraint. Entirely harmonious in the mouth, with a luxurious density of fruit, and while the tannins are submerged the acidity is just present. The style is slightly more in red fruit than black, though both play their part in the ensemble. Quite a robust Romanée-St-Vivant, but plenty to look forward too.

2018 is their third vintage since recuperating three ouvrées of old vines, originally in a poor state. Dense rich purple colour. Intense nose suggesting firm structure. Still very primary fruit notes, reminiscent of summer pudding with attendant good acidity. Firm style.

Once again, the nose is firmly reduced and in need of aeration. There is good verve and detail to the lighter weight (though not dilute) flavors that possess good flavor authority while delivering reasonably good length on the moderately rustic finale. Here too there is enough reduction present to warrant a thorough aeration. The more finely textured flavors possess better detail and mid-palate density, all wrapped in a stony and very firmly structured finish that flirts with rusticity. From several plots, notably Condemenes supported by Pas de Chat and Derrière le Four. Rich purple centre with lighter rim. Very slight reduction on the nose. This is a bit cooked fruit in style, but still remains enough freshness to survive. Succulent but perhaps not fine and on the edge of volatility.

Half old and half young vines, with 7 new barrels out of 10. Fine deep red to purple colour here with an explosive but balanced nose. Not as lush as some cuvees, retaining excellent balance and complex aromatics of dark red fruit, grenadine, slightly blacker fruit on the palate, grainy but ripe tannins, great balance between muscle and finesse. The young vines help the balance here. This could yet grow into a fifth star.

Here too there is enough reduction at present to mask the underlying fruit so I would again recommend a thorough aeration if you're not planning to cellar this. Thomas Bouley is very much the insiders secret, more famous with his fellow vignerons than with collectors chasing the next 'superstar' seen on social media. That Thomas resists putting his name on the front label of his wines (preferring to keep his father's) is typical of his humble and low key approach. Based in Volnay may also add to his relative anonymity, however we suspect this is changing rapidly as word gets out of just how spectacular his wines are, and of the continual improvement seen since he began working with his father in the early 2000's.

Meticulous attention to detail in both the vineyard and winery are notable here, and key to why Thomas is so highly regarded by his peers. Yields are moderate, and in the cellar whole cluster ferments are used more with his clay rich sites (Pommard Fremiers, Volnay Clos des Chenes), while those with thin white soils (Pommard Rugiens-Hauts, Volnay Caillerets) are largely destemmed. New oak use is minimal, and each wine spend two winters on fine lees before bottling.

    Other Reviews....
Aromas of raspberries and plums mingled with hints of orange rind, sweet spices and forest floor introduce Bouley's 2019 Volnay Village, a medium to full-bodied, supple and seamless wine that's lively and penetrating, concluding with a long, saline finish. As I've written before, this cuvée blends the rich, clay soils of lieux-dits Poisots, Famines and Cros Martin with the thinner, whiter soils of Ez Blanches above the Clos de Chênes; but in 2019, the wine's tone is set by Ez Blanches, even if it only amounts to one-third of the blend.

The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes has turned out especially well. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of raspberries, pomegranate, sweet spices, licorice and rose petals, it's full-bodied, layered and concentrated, its velvety attack segueing into a deep and voluminous core of fruit that's framed by lively acids and unusually refined tannins for this site. This is one of the most elegant and compelling Clos des Chêne that Bouley has produced to date. Drink 2029 - 2060.

The 2019 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru offers darker fruit on the nose compared to Bouley's other cuvées, touches of blackberry, wilted rose petals and crushed stone. The terroir really shines through. The palate is framed by filigree tannins that impart a silky texture, almost languorous on the finish that lingers. A sensual offering. Drink 2024-2048.

Thomas Bouley is very much the insiders secret, more famous with his fellow vignerons than with collectors chasing the next 'superstar' seen on social media. The 2019 Pommard Village is terrific, unfurling in the glass with aromas of cherries, raspberries, rose petals and sweet spices. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and chalky, it's the most tightly wound, incisive communal appellation in the cellar, concluding with a long, saline finish. As usual, it mostly derives from the cool, northeasterly exposures of the windy lieu-dit of Valmuriens, where the soils are rich in active calcium. Forget it for a decade and then reap the rewards. The 2019 Pommard Village has a fragrant nose with dark berry fruit mixed with Earl Grey and undergrowth notes emerging with aeration. The palate is beautifully-defined with fine depth for a Village Cru, slightly chalky tannins and a precise, quite persistent finish. I would afford this 3-4 years in bottle before broaching. A firmly reduced nose does not allow any nuance to be appreciated. More interesting are the racy and almost painfully intense tautly muscular flavors that possess plenty of minerality that imparts a refreshing salinity on the linear, austere, compact and tightly wound finish. This excellent effort is a 'buy and forget you own it' wine that should age gracefully for years. Drink 2035+.

The 2018 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens has also turned out very well indeed, mingling aromas of cherries and red berries with hints of licorice, forest floor and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, bright and precise, it's mineral and fine-boned, reflecting its origins in the thinner, calcareous soils of Rugiens-Hauts that have little in common with the iron-rich clays of Rugiens-Bas. Long and penetrating, it's beautifully refined. Drink 2026 - 2055.

The 2018 Pommard Les Rugiens 1er Cru comes from the lieu-dit of Rugiens-Haut, on shallow soils. This is 100% de-stemmed. It has a light, airy bouquet of fragrant cranberry and raspberry aromas. Northern part just before it switches to ENE. Fair depth of colour, more red than purple. Complex nose, there is a lot going on here. More red than black, complex too on the palate now with some darker notes, keeps changing, ripe but vibrating. Dense and quite classy.

Rich and gourmand, the 2018 Pommard 1er Cru Les Fremiers has gained in aromatic range since I tasted it last year, mingling aromas of wild berries and plums with hints of peonies, musk, blood orange and exotic spices. The 2018 Pommard les Fremiers 1er Cru is located just below the lieu-dit of Les Rugiens-Bas at the bottom part of the slope, on red soils. Its 43-year-old vines tend to produce small bunches. It has a well-defined bouquet with red berry fruit, dark chocolate and truffle aromas emerging from the glass. The palate is very well balanced with fine-grained, quite rigid tannins at the moment, in keeping with the Pommard style. Excellent freshness here, and a precise finish. Superb. Drink 2022 - 2035.

Just below Rugiens-bas. Light red soil. Medium deep crimson in colour, with quite a lifted nose, some whole bunch I think - 50% stems it turns out. Deep dark cherries, prettily perfumed, helps provide energy all the way through. Fine long finish. Interestingly, the stems take away the Pommard and leave the Fremiers!

The 2018 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru comes from 45- to 65-year-old vines in a more exposed location than the Les Carelles, at 300m altitude. This year it includes 40% whole cluster. It has more complexity and precision on the nose by comparison with the Les Carelles, featuring lovely raspberry and wild strawberry fruit laced with crushed stone aromas. Dense purple centre. A high-class nose, albeit quite discreet at first. Thomas felt that his Clos des Chênes used to be on the massive side before he tamed it with some whole bunch vinification. This has the most significant volume of fruit of all in the cellar, dark with the beginnings of some chocolate. Slightly dry tannins here but the fruit should win.

Spicy purple fruit aromas are set off by pretty floral nuances that include both violet and rose petal. The more refined middle weight flavors possess excellent cut and drive that carries over to the beautifully refined finish that exhibits excellent length. A more elegant array of red currant, spice and a lovely range of floral elements serves as a lovely introduction to the sleeker and more refined medium weight flavors that possess an appealing sense of underlying tension while delivering outstanding length on the balanced finale. This youthfully austere effort is quite firm though the supporting tannins are relatively fine-grained. This too is worthy of your interest. Drink from 2031+.

The king of the cellar is the 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Cherbaudes, a striking wine from vines planted more than 100 years ago. Unwinding in the glass with a complex bouquet of cherries, cassis and wild berries mingled with hints of black truffle, rose petals and warm spices, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, its chassis of ripe, powdery tannin entirely concealed by an ample core of fruit. Seamless and complete, it concludes with a long, expansive finish. Drink 2027 - 2060.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cherbaudes 1er Cru sees no new oak. The clean nose is more precise and mineral-driven than the Champonnets, extremely well focused and brimming with energy. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, a superb line of acidity and a very harmonious, tender finish. This is classy and just plain delicious. Drink 2023-2040.

Rich deep crimson-purple, the nose suggesting whole bunch vinification to me, which they do not use, intriguing. This is a powerful beast from ancient vines, almost a touch of heat, very powerful stuff.

Firm reduction renders the nose impossible to assess. While there is good energy and detail to the middle weight flavors, the clipped and short finish is rendered equally tough to read by the abundant gas. I suspect that this will be fine once it's cleaned up, but my projected range is necessarily somewhat provisional. Drink from 2026+.

Pretty and perfumed, the 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Village opens in the glass with notes of cherries, raspberries, rose petals and spices, framed by a deft touch of new oak. Medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, with a lively core of fruit and refined tannins, it concludes with a long, floral finish. As I've written before, this bottling is largely derived from the lieu-dit Beaux Bruns, part of which is only entitled to the communal appellation—supplemented by some fruit from lieu-dit Derrière la Four. Drink 2025 - 2045.

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes from two parcels, 80% from Beaux Bruns and 20% from Derrière La Forge. The first barrel selected showed some reduction. The second was much better, offering well-defined brambly red fruit intermixed with light earthy aromas. The palate is ripe and quite candied on the entry, with vanilla-tinged red fruit, a slightly confit style, and a sweet, candied, lightly spiced finish. Not profound, but quite seductive. Drink 2022-2032.

Made from 75% Beaux Bruns and 25% Derrière le Four, purchased in 2005 and 2009 respectively. Intense purple with a reductive nose. Quite heavy at the moment with dark fruit, and a lot of oak.

Louis Boillot in concert with his wife Ghislaine Barthod and their son Clément Boillot-Barthod manage a fabulous array of old-vine vineyards in both the Cotes de Nuits and Cotes de Beaune. Whilst this Burgundian ‘red-royalty’ family hold no Grand Cru vineyards they turn out some of the most beautiful red Burgundy along the Cote d’Or.

An elegant and airy mix features notes of red cherry, raspberry, pomegranate and spice. The sleek, intense and very well-detailed, indeed the mouthfeel of the middle weight flavors is chiseled though the tannins shaping the short finish are grippy and serrated. Drink 2023+.

Blossoming in the glass with a lovely bouquet of raspberries, cherries, dried flowers and blood orange, the 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Village is medium to full-bodied, lively and precise, with fine-boned structuring tannins and succulent acids. The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes from two climats, the majority from Les Beaux Bruns. This cru seemed to be missing some lift and energy on the nose, coming across rather static in the glass. The fleshy, ripe palate offers maraschino cherries, raspberry preserve and a touch of white pepper. Forward and willing to please, yet not a profound Chambolle-Musigny. Drink 2021-2028.

Here there is a particular kind of reduction that the Burgundians refer to as bourgeon de cassis, or black currant blossom; this kind of reduction tends to dissipate easily though it does dominate the fruit when it's present. The refined and highly energetic flavors possess a lovely mid-palate texture with plenty of minerality while exhibiting good persistence on the somewhat skinny and lean finish. This may well flesh out with a few years of bottle age and my predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt. Drink 2025+.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles is a touch more reserved, unwinding to reveal a brooding bouquet of cherries, berries, dark chocolate, grilled meats and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, lively and precise, it's concentrated and introverted, with powdery structuring tannins and a mineral finish.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles 1er Cru has a pretty bouquet of vivacious red currant, raspberry and crushed strawberry fruit, along with light rose petal notes and hints of quince and orange pith. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannins, and a keen thread of acidity lends real tension and precision toward the finish. This is one of Boillot’s best 2018s. Drink 2023-2038.

A very spicy and ultra-fresh nose is comprised by the essence of red currant, pomegranate and a touch of green tea. There is excellent punch and once again very good detail to the focused medium-bodied flavors that possess solid complexity and persistence though the finish, in much the same fashion as the Evocelles, is somewhat skinny and lean. The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Champonnets 1er Cru is bestowed with darker fruit than the Evocelles at the moment, offering well-defined blackberry and light briary aromas. There is a pleasing minerally undercurrent at play here. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins lending fine backbone, but this does not possess the same degree of precision and charm as the Evocelles toward the finish. Let’s see if it develops by the time of bottling. Drink 2023-2037.

A much more deeply pitched nose grudgingly offers up notes of poached plum, dark currant, earth and a lovely range of discreet spice elements. Boillot's ancient vines have produced three barrels of the glorious 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Cherbaudes, a striking wine that exhibits aromas of cherries, cassis, rich soil tones, citrus rind and violets. Medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, it's voluminous and concentrated, concluding with a long and lively finish. As I wrote last year, this cuvée hails from a parcel planted a century ago, and it contains some 5% small-berried selections of Gamay.

A distinctly earthy and somewhat somber nose reflects notes of underbrush, forest floor, dark currant and plum. The rich and moderately powerful medium weight flavors offer both good intensity and reasonable complexity on the solidly long and well-balanced finish. I was a bit surprised though that this wasn't more concentrated and complex given the age of the vines. In short, this is very good but not at its usual level, at least not today. Drink 2029+.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Cherbaudes hails from a parcel planted a century ago—and that contains some 5% small-berried selections of Gamay. The wine is Boillot's de facto grand cru, soaring from the glass with a captivating bouquet of raspberries, plums, dried flowers, espresso roast and licorice, subtly framed by cedary new wood. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and velvety, with superb depth and dimension at the core, succulent acids and a long, fine-grained finish. This is one of the great values in serious "de garde" red Burgundy and it comes warmly recommended.

An equally restrained nose combines both upper and lower register elements that include red cherry and pomegranate with those of plum, earth and forest floor. Dark bright red, with a wealth of sweet red fruit on the nose too, a certain plumpness in the mouth but perhaps a touch lacking in concentration, slightly weedy red fruit. An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
