Pinot Noir
While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

2022 Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier Bonnes-Mares Grand CruBurgundy, FRANCE$2899. 00Bottle$34788.00 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
An airy, fresh and ripe nose combines notes of plum liqueur with a lovely plethora of floral and discreet spice elements. The super-sleek and beautifully delineated flavors are not particularly concentrated but they display a taut muscularity on the superbly long and impeccably well-balanced finale that is firm enough to repay extended keeping. A Bonnes Mares of relative refinement and one of the better vintages for this wine in recent memory. Drink through 2037+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundAromas of dark cherries, minty berries, rose petals, sweet spices and orange zest introduce the 2022 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, a full-bodied, ample and seamless wine with a rich, layered core of fruit that's framed by supple, powdery tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long, saline finish.

William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateMedium deep and bright purple. As always has the slightly coffee torrefaction nose but with pretty red fruit beneath. Juicy on the palate, at the front then a little more austere behind. But this is one of the more attractive versions I have had here. I said as much to Frédéric. “Well its taken 20 years to persuade you, Jasper”, he responded – “but I have to admit you were right, at the start!”. Maybe a fourth star next year? Drink from 2032-2038.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyThis lovely, exuberant Bonnes-Mares shows ripe dark fruit aromas of mulberry and plum and hints of violet, dark chocolate, and earth. The texture is substantial but not astringent, with richness but no heaviness. A bigger wine than the Musigny, but not awkward in any way. Although expressive in barrel, this may shut down and require up to five years to show well once bottled. This is top-quality Bonnes-Mares done with an eminently light touch. Drink 2028-2075.

An exuberantly fresh nose features notes of grapefruit, green apple and a whisper of spice. There is both excellent volume and mid-palate density to the delicious and vibrant medium weight flavors that conclude in a tangy, nicely dry and refreshing finale. This would benefit from having better depth but a few years of keeping should address that. Drink through 2025+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2021 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale is more overtly structured from bottle than I perceived from barrel, unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cherries, vine smoke and earthy spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, taut and chalky palate that will reward some patience. Drink 2027-2041.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 19, 2024)The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de la Maréchale 1er Cru has a pretty, floral nose with pressed rose petal filtering through the red fruit. Transparent. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, light for a Premier Cru yet quite vivacious with finely chiselled tannins towards the tart finish. Will be difficult to resist young. Drink 2024-2034.

Neal Martin - VinousThis Nuits-Saint-Georges has an astonishingly expressive nose of sour cherries, pomegranate and blood orange, the oak almost completely masked by these aromas. The marriage of ripeness and vibrancy, fine tannins and stony acidity is very impressive. Interesting touch of liquorice at the long, bright and focused finish.
94-95 points
Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comA light to medium purple. Mugnier elegance meets the Maréchale, so this is more in fruit than flowers after the ethereal Chambolle. There is enough depth of fruit here, both on the nose and palate, followed by a fresh finish, fruit plus acidity with also a light tannin or two. Drink from 2026-2032.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyMugnier’s nearly ten-hectare monopole at the southern extreme of Prémeaux-Prissey has suffered in recent years: hail in 2018, coulure in 2019, drought in 2020, and frost in 2021. It has produced a bit more than half a normal harvest this year, but what is left is lovely indeed, with lush, pretty aromas of raspberry with floral notes and a delicate, supple texture on the palate that is ethereal yet oddly persistent. It is far from the most structured in the portfolio but is among the most approachable. Drink 2025-2040.

Here too the nose is quite ripe but also quite fresh with its aromas that are comprised mostly by the essence of plum, spice and pretty floral nuances. There is both fine volume and verve to the slightly more refined and more mineral-inflected medium-bodied flavors that deliver excellent length on the firmly structured, ever-so-mildly warm and youthfully austere finale. This is not as refined as the exquisite 2019 version, but it is more powerful and broad-shouldered. A qualitative choice. Drink 2030+.

A brooding, slightly riper and more deeply pitched nose features notes of poached plum, cassis and plenty of spice and floral nuances and in particular violet. There is very good punch to the delicious and suave medium-bodied flavors that exude more evident minerality on the firm, serious and youthfully austere finish. This is perhaps not quite as refined as it usually is but the complexity and persistence are excellent and overall, this is particularly impressive given the hailstorms of 2018. Drink 2026+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundFrom bottle, the 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale is still marked by the extremes of the vintage. It offers up attractive aromas of cassis, cherries, rose petals and violets, but it's rich, firm and rather heady on the palate, bearing the stamp of the two hailstorms that struck this site. The 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale is a little more introverted after its recent bottling, unwinding in the glass with a reticent bouquet of red berries, raw cocoa, sweet soil tones and dried flowers. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with good depth at the core and a more structured, introverted profile than the Chambolle that preceded it. The missing ingredient here is a little time.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)A markedly earthy nose features notes of various dark berries and hints of game and similar green tea nuances. The 2015 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Aux Argillas has a lovely oyster shell tinged bouquet with joyous black cherry and bilberry aromas. I appreciate the precision of this Nuits Saint-Georges, hints of violets emerging with time. Neal Martin - Wine Advocate #230 (Apr 2017)A mildly toasty nose still allows the cool, pure and ripe wild red berry aromas that are liberally laced with earth, game and humus wisps to be appreciated. There is excellent density and punch to the brooding, intense and muscular flavors that exude evident minerality onto the presently linear, rustic and moderately austere finish. This will require a few years to better harmonize but the underlying material is so good that this should ultimately be excellent. Recommended if you have the patience.

Allen Meadows - Burghound(from 45-year-old vines): Medium red with ruby tones. More complex than the Gevrey Champerrier but also with obvious torrefaction notes of coffee and dark chocolate to its dark fruit aromas. This is the first wine to display appreciable wood toast but not so much as to really fight with the notably ripe spiced cassis and warm earth aromas. The dense, serious and vibrant medium-bodied flavors also possess a velvety texture before culminating in a palate coating finale that delivers excellent persistence for a villages level Nuits. This is definitely worth considering.

Allen Meadows - Burghound(from 80-year-old vines adjacent to Vosne-Romanée): Moderately saturated dark red. Crushed blackberry and spicy oak scents are lifted by a subtle violet topnote. Allen Meadows - BurghoundFine deep purple, the nose just suggests an immensity to follow, but it retains its restraint. Entirely harmonious in the mouth, with a luxurious density of fruit, and while the tannins are submerged the acidity is just present. The style is slightly more in red fruit than black, though both play their part in the ensemble. Quite a robust Romanée-St-Vivant, but plenty to look forward too.

A markedly ripe nose features a mentholated top note on the earthy aromas of plum liqueur. There is better volume to the plump, round and fleshy flavors that firm up noticeably on the youthfully austere and reasonably persistent finish. I would suggest allowing this at least 2 to 3 years of cellar time first. Drink from 2025+.

This is also quite firmly reduced, and I would again suggest decanting this if you're going to try a bottle young. More interesting are the slightly less concentrated but finer with delicious medium-bodied flavors that exude a subtle salinity on the more complex and persistent finale. Worth a look provided you intend to cellar it for at least a few years first so that the nose can better harmonize. Drink from 2025+.

Here too there is enough reduction present to warrant a thorough aeration. The more finely textured flavors possess better detail and mid-palate density, all wrapped in a stony and very firmly structured finish that flirts with rusticity. As the description suggests, this is somewhat awkward today though there is so much underlying material that this should ultimately come together. Drink from 2029+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundFrom several plots, notably Condemenes supported by Pas de Chat and Derrière le Four. Rich purple centre with lighter rim. Very slight reduction on the nose. This is a bit cooked fruit in style, but still remains enough freshness to survive. Succulent but perhaps not fine and on the edge of volatility.

Reduction dominates the nose at present. Otherwise there is both good underlying tension and definition to the muscular middle weight plus flavors that flash evident power on the moderately firm and rustic finale. This is very Nuits in character and should age accordingly. Drink from 2031+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundHalf old and half young vines, with 7 new barrels out of 10. Fine deep red to purple colour here with an explosive but balanced nose. Not as lush as some cuvees, retaining excellent balance and complex aromatics of dark red fruit, grenadine, slightly blacker fruit on the palate, grainy but ripe tannins, great balance between muscle and finesse. The young vines help the balance here. This could yet grow into a fifth star.

That Thomas resists putting his name on the front label of his wines (preferring to keep his father's) is typical of his humble and low key approach. Based in Volnay may also add to his relative anonymity, however we suspect this is changing rapidly as word gets out of just how spectacular his wines are, and of the continual improvement seen since he began working with his father in the early 2000's.
Meticulous attention to detail in both the vineyard and winery are notable here, and key to why Thomas is so highly regarded by his peers. Yields are moderate, and in the cellar whole cluster ferments are used more with his clay rich sites (Pommard Fremiers, Volnay Clos des Chenes), while those with thin white soils (Pommard Rugiens-Hauts, Volnay Caillerets) are largely destemmed. Here there is a particular kind of reduction that the Burgundians refer to as bourgeon de cassis, or black currant blossom; this kind of reduction tends to dissipate easily though it does dominate the fruit when it's present. A very spicy and ultra-fresh nose is comprised by the essence of red currant, pomegranate and a touch of green tea. There is excellent punch and once again very good detail to the focused medium-bodied flavors that possess solid complexity and persistence though the finish, in much the same fashion as the Evocelles, is somewhat skinny and lean. This too may well flesh out with a few years of bottle age and my predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt as this is usually a very reliable wine. Drink 2028+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnet has turned out brilliantly, wafting from the glass with a beautiful bouquet of cherries, cassis, wild berries, rose petals and sweet soil tones. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, elegant and enveloping, with a fleshy core of fruit, powdery tannins and succulent acids.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2020)The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Champonnets 1er Cru is bestowed with darker fruit than the Evocelles at the moment, offering well-defined blackberry and light briary aromas. There is a pleasing minerally undercurrent at play here. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins lending fine backbone, but this does not possess the same degree of precision and charm as the Evocelles toward the finish. Let’s see if it develops by the time of bottling. Drink 2023-2037.

A much more deeply pitched nose grudgingly offers up notes of poached plum, dark currant, earth and a lovely range of discreet spice elements. There is better volume and richness to the sappy and slightly more complex flavors that possess slightly better finishing balance though the tannins are still inelegant and somewhat coarse. Drink 2028+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundBoillot's ancient vines have produced three barrels of the glorious 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Cherbaudes, a striking wine that exhibits aromas of cherries, cassis, rich soil tones, citrus rind and violets. Medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, it's voluminous and concentrated, concluding with a long and lively finish. As I wrote last year, this cuvée hails from a parcel planted a century ago, and it contains some 5% small-berried selections of Gamay.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2020)The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cherbaudes 1er Cru offers a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, intermixed with truffle oil and dried blood aromas; quite complex and engaging. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple opening, then fleshy and lightly spiced. It does not quite kick on as I was expecting and seems rather conservative toward the finish, although maybe it has something up its sleeve for later. Drink 2023-2037.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
