Burgundy, FRANCE
$260. 00

$3120.00 Dozen
ABV: 13.5%

Louis Boillot in concert with his wife Ghislaine Barthod and their son Clément Boillot-Barthod manage a fabulous array of old-vine vineyards in both the Cotes de Nuits and Cotes de Beaune. Whilst this Burgundian ‘red-royalty’ family hold no Grand Cru vineyards they turn out some of the most beautiful red Burgundy along the Cote d’Or.

Other Reviews....
A distinctly earthy and somewhat somber nose reflects notes of underbrush, forest floor, dark currant and plum. The rich and moderately powerful medium weight flavors offer both good intensity and reasonable complexity on the solidly long and well-balanced finish. I was a bit surprised though that this wasn't more concentrated and complex given the age of the vines. In short, this is very good but not at its usual level, at least not today. Drink 2029+.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Cherbaudes hails from a parcel planted a century ago—and that contains some 5% small-berried selections of Gamay. The wine is Boillot's de facto grand cru, soaring from the glass with a captivating bouquet of raspberries, plums, dried flowers, espresso roast and licorice, subtly framed by cedary new wood. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and velvety, with superb depth and dimension at the core, succulent acids and a long, fine-grained finish. This is one of the great values in serious "de garde" red Burgundy and it comes warmly recommended.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cherbaudes 1er Cru is blessed with some of the best aromatics from Louis Boillot this year, featuring copious, well-defined black cherry and bilberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy opening, almost confit-like, offering vivacious red cherries, orange zest and Moroccan spices toward the finish. This has great potential. Drink 2022 - 2040.

Planted 1912 and still in good shape. Imperial purple. Up to this year Louis’ father has looked after this vineyard but he is 93 now. This has great density and a seamless texture, lifted red and black fruit at the back, perfectly judged ripenesss. Bravo Louis (and dad!)
