Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners.

Started in the 1980’s, Mount Horrocks was purchased by Stephanie Toole in 1993 and it was from there that it’s reputation was built as one of the country’s top Riesling producers. Certified Organic and biodynamic the vineyard is unusual in that it is south facing and at a very high altitude – two factors that contribute to a cooler site which is preferred in this time of climate warming.
Brilliant water like core with a greenish tinged surrounds. Bounding out of the glass are intense lime, citrus and orange rind aromatics which are trailed by talc, green apple and chalky mineral notes. The mouth watering palate is a concentrate of lime, citrus and orange rind fruits which are delivered with outstanding textural volume and power. Chalky talc and slatey mineral characters lie underneath. Crunchy acidity with a very long, super scrumptious finish.
Superb drinking over the next 6-8 years.

Aromas break free from the glass with concentration like essential oils of cypress, lavender, lemon zest and peppermint. Packed tightly with gunpowder in the air, a type of dusty rock spread amongst the flowers and the fruit. It’s dense and detailed. Flavours are like drinking the essence infused with nutmeg and barky cinnamon, a cool slate-like feel of texture and a long cool minty finish with ruby grapefruit lingering long. Complex and invigorating potion. Drink 2023-2033+

Owner/winemaker Stephanie Toole adopted biodynamic viticulture in 2013. The wine’s highly expressive bouquet has echoes of lavender and citrus blossom; the palate is direct and intense, with layer upon layer of lime and green apple. Drink to 2035.

A Majestic Watervale Riesling  possessing an exceptionally concentrated core of lime and citrus fruit and bursting with energy.

Brilliant water like core with highlights of green around the edges. Leaping out of the glass with superb intensity are lemon, lime and orange rind scents which are trailed by distinct talc and chalky mineral notes. A pure concentrate of Riesling, lime and citrus fruits burst across the scrumptious palate engulfing every corner of the mouth. Crunchy acidity underscores the voluminous fruit with notions of orange rind, chalky talc, subtle wet steel and flinty mineral like characters also present.

Very much on song with its white flower, apple and lime blossom aromas. While it isn't the least uncertain in the mouth, it grows rapidly on the back palate and finish, with palpable structure to its lime-drenched flavours and acidity. Drink to 2035.

A very good year for Riesling in the Clare Valley.
Plenty of bath salts, spice and perfume, lime and lime zest. It’s juicy, a distinct lime zest and gin and tonic sort of flavour, chalky texture, quite intense, fennel, and a juicy/crunchy finish of excellent length. Packed with Watervale goodness. Lovely. Drink 2022-2030+

If you can count on something, it is that the Mount Horrocks Rieslings are on point every vintage that goes by. This 2022 Watervale Riesling is as tight and as focused as I've seen it, and the laser beam of acidity that points across the mouth and down into the throat is as pronounced as Batman's Klieg light over Gotham. The wine is restrained and determined in the mouth, outlaying fleshy lime zest, preserved lemon, green apples and crushed chalk. It is a marvel, and we know these wines age with ease, especially under the STELVIN closure. Drink it whenever it brings you pleasure. Drink 2022-2047.

Five clones, hand-picked. Still crystal white 12 months on from vintage; a top flight example of the clarity and purity of Adelaide Hills rieslings from this vintage. The steely acidity at the core of the lime fruit flavours is mouthwatering, the finish correspondingly long. Drink by 2030.

The 2023 Riesling Steinert is a little unusual in style thanks to a later pick, but I like where this is headed in a genuinely flavorsome style with hearty aromas of pear and citrus. Richly textured with ripe, crisp acidity, appreciable flavor and balanced phenolics, this has some quite serious personality that holds over a lingering finish. Drink 2025 - 2032.

The 2023 Steinert Riesling leads with white pineapple and saline, crushed rocks and straw. The wine is gently floral without being overt, and it has a mineral seam of crushed quartz and sand. Pretty. The mid-palate is spicy and taut, with a width through the finish that adds complexity and density to the fruit. Really smart. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2024 - 2038.

From the Watervale sub region, Skilly Valley, which runs north to south on the valley floor, vines grow in sandy loam soils over broken quartz. Protected from the extremes of the summer sun by the valley sides, the grapes from these vines produce Riesling with a natural crisp acid backbone.

The Skilly Valley is a sub-region of Watervale. And the minerally character in the wine comes from the sandy loam soils over broken quartz. It’s quite a delicate wine, heavily scented with light florals and appley citrus notes with just a hint of musk stick. The palate is fine, and although delicate, has a tremendous driving intensity with that typical Riesling tension. It finishes long and picks up very subtle stone fruit nuances as it flows through. A sub-region of Watervale. You’d not expect 2025 to be a good vintage, given it was so dry, yet here we are. The proof is in the pudding (or glass as it may be).
My word this is a juicy wine. Green mango, lime and lemongrass, a spicy almost peppery top note. It has crunch and grip, lime and sherbet, definitely a sort of Thai salad sort of thing happening, and quite stony texture on a gently grippy finish of very good length. It’s maybe a little bit rugged, though I kind of like that. Flavour is not a problem for this wine, despite its very modest alcohol. Very nice. Drink 2025-2034.

Exquisitely dry, gently textural, whispered with slate and full of class. This is Clare Valley riesling at its dry, persistent, mouthwatwering best. The 2025 Skilly Valley Riesling is perhaps more of a predictable Clare Valley Riesling than the 2024 was, and by that I mean that this is classic lime, green apple, white pepper, fennel and green almonds. In the mouth, the wine is talcy and fine, chalky and fresh‚—it is possessed of that great succulence that is specific to Clare Valley Riesling. This is really impressive. By all accounts, 2025 was a challenging season for the lack of water and sustained heat, coupled with some damaging frosts leading in to the spring in 2024, however, none of the struggle is evident in this glass. This is excellent. 10.3% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2035.

Some of the vines used for this very youthful but delightfully fresh Riesling from the Watervale sub-region date back to the 1930s. O’Leary Walker’s Watervale vineyard has classic Watervale soils - red loam over limestone with a westerly aspect. The limestone allows the soil to retain moisture, which assists the wine throughout periods of warm weather, almost drought-proofing in the summer months.
It’s harvested a few weeks before the Polish Hill River vineyard.

From a pair of Clare Riesling masters, comes a masterful pair of Clare Rieslings. This Watervale Riesling is simply superb. A very pale yellow, we have notes of grapefruits, talc, spices and florals with a minerally background. A wine of finesse, bright acidity, balance and great length. A scintillating Riesling with focus, this will be a joy any time over the next twelve to fifteen years. Early reports suggest that 2024 will be a thrilling vintage, as good – in its own way – as ‘21 and ‘22. A cracking Clare Riesling and what value it is. Drink 2024-2039.

So fine, so silky, so effortless in delivery with aromatics that define what Watervale Riesling is all about. Watervale can be perceived as quiet. It is, in fact, beautifully subtle, detailed in style. Aromas of lime, lemongrass, kaffir lime with just a touch of ginger nicely define the sub-regional – and regional – style. The palate boasts a long line of flavour, super intense in lime, with herbals, fennel and ginger. Texturally, it’s supple. Acidity-wise, it is lemony bright and the mainstay of the wine, but don’t read into this that it is hard-edged. It’s not. Great length makes the flavour last. This is a fully formed young Riesling, ready to fly. Drink 2024-2032.

Always the prettier of the two O'Leary Walker Rieslings I find, this 2024 Watervale hits a home run once again. It's simply a high-quality glass of happiness. Pretty and zesty, this is a most enjoyable release. Pretty white field flowers and bath salts always feature and this 2024 is no different. Lemon juice, lime leaf and lime zest, there is a fine ribbon of quartz minerality tucked in behind. It leaves a vibrant trail highlighted by a sherbety tang. Devine. Beautiful drinking. Drink this while it's fresh on those hot summer days.

Fruit for this superb Polish Hill River Riesling is sourced from Martin and Joan Smith as well as Molloy's vineyards which are virtually located next to each other. Despite growing these vines organically since their planting in the 1970’s, 2010 marked the first year of NASAA Organic Certification. Both vineyards consistently produce top quality fruit which highlights the excellence of this Clare Valley sub-region.

    Scintillating Polish Hill River Riesling.

Soaring out of the glass are potent aromas of lime and citrus which are trailed by some green apple, chalky talc, wet steel and mineral notes. Showing greater textural volume across the palate than the Watervale, mouth watering lime and lemon fruits infused with wet steel and mineral elements carry a highly energised feel with searing acidity cutting it’s way through the wine’s core. The opposite in personality to Watervale Riesling, Polish Hill is all about Riesling energy and exuberance. Organically grown, for those wondering, Polish Hill arrives all bright and perky but underneath the citrussy exterior there is great concentration of fruit flavour. A drinker could get lost in the depths of that gorgeous middle palate such is the appeal of spiced apple with grapefruit, lemon, lime and citrus zest. Polish Hill offers a mix of spice and citrus all rolled tightly into one super perky, fresh, young Riesling. Another ripper from this top Clare Valley sub-region. Drink 2024-2034.

This excellent Polish Hill River Riesling from O'Leary Walker is always a consistently high performer. The quality of Riesling in Australia is awesome and you ought to get this label on your radar. Sourced from an organic vineyard, pretty white flowers, musk and lavender, lemon-lime splice isn't far from the dancefloor either. A seductive and detailed minerally vibe ripples through the mid-palate stitching it together. Green apples, apple sours, a whisper of grapefruit and not to mention that glorious citrusy and pithy tang that clutches to a long and fabulous finish, this is classy stuff and I could neck gallons of it. Drink now to embrace its freshness but it will age gracefully if that is your thing.

Brilliant water like colour with greenish toned edges. Lime, citrus and green apple aromas leap from the glass trailed by talc, orange rind and chalky mineral notes. Crunchy lime, citrus and orange rind fruits are underscored by racy acidity. Chalky talc and steely mineral elements line the back half. Dry and tense it finishes long and mouth watering.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Beautiful, arresting aromatics and a rare delicacy; you just know you are in Watervale territory when you set upon that aroma, those flavours. Scents of citrus blossom, lemon zest, lime sorbet and spring flowers with a touch of lantana bring not only a sense of place but grape variety. The ’23 vintage looks to be another excellent year, making it three in a row for Clare Riesling, joining the outstanding ’21 and ’22. Not quite as seamless as its ’23 sibling but give it time. This youngster is still very much working at getting it together. There’s a clean, brisk acidity that’s tart and green apple crunchy. It drives the wine bringing in its wake lime cordial, pink grapefruit, ginger spice, citrus zest and a cool slate, wet stone tang. So pure, so good. Drink 2023-2035.

Riesling in Australia.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
