Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners.

Cask sample. Ripe, very pure, super-intense lemon. On the palate, pure, super-concentrated apricot. Sweet but incredibly light on its feet. Very Kirchspiel, with a mineral/stony foundation almost completely overwhelmed by the fruit now. Needs time to become more complex. Mouth-watering apricot finish, with depth and length but no excess weight. Intensely primary. Stay away for 10 years at least. At the moment it seems almost too sweet even though it has the acidity to balance.

Has the fumey mineral character of the Pettenthal Grosses Gewächs on the nose but also a peachy citrus fruit note and a light herbal quality on the palate. Eye-watering acidity and purity. More linear than the Abts E and the Morstein GGs, more direct and arrow-like. Incredibly primary and not ready, for tasting let alone for drinking. With such intense wines in the 2017 vintage, the G-Max does not stand out as much for its intensity as in other vintages, but the length is immeasurable.

The 2017 G-Max from Weingut Keller is simply brilliant. Again, the inherent elegance of the vintage is very much in evidence here, with the wine showing magical minerality and lift from the short crop and the great quality of the growing season. The youthful nose offers up scents of pink grapefruit, tart orange, a touch of lemongrass, gentle notes of wild yeasts, a very refined base of limestone soil elements, a nice dollop of smokiness and an exotic topnote of spiced meats. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and racy, with a great core, outstanding focus and grip and impeccable balance on the very long, vibrant finish. There is a sense of seamless electricity and endless backend lift in the 2017 G-Max that is simply amazing. 2030-2095.

Every now and then, when I’m actually out at a fancy restaurant, and I see Keller on the list, I usually order it. My non-wine friends (a majority!) always love it. “Gee, GW, you sure know how to pick good wines. It’s great being out with you. You are the best!” Or something like that…
Savoury, smoky, almost cheesy scents over green apple sorbet, mango and lime, but as ever with Keller, it’s the texture that gets you involved. This is particularly chalky, crunchy and interesting, with that gin and tonic granita freshness/bitterness on the long finish. Wunderbar.

It is difficult to overstate just how central Weingut Keller has become to the modern understanding of dry Riesling. Since Klaus-Peter Keller took over from his father in 2001, the estate has set a global benchmark for precision and expression, joined in recent years by his son Felix, who now plays an increasingly active role in both the vineyards and cellar. Together with Julia Keller, they continue to refine a style that balances crystalline purity with textural depth, producing some of the most sought-after wines in Germany and beyond.
Kirchspiel is a steep, east-to-southeast facing amphitheatre in Westhofen with thin, chalk-rich marl over limestone. The site's exposure and cooler air flow are key to its reputation for producing wines of clarity and aromatic lift, and it consistently ranks among Keller's most distinctive Grosse Lage bottlings.

The Westhofen 2023 Kirchspiel Riesling GG is deep and intense on the concentrated and calcareous, slightly floral nose. Lush and round on the palate, this is an elegant, finessed and concentrated, very intense, tight and saline-finishing Kirchspiel with fine tannins. There are minty notes and white pepper on the finish. Tasted as a sample in May this year, the wine was to be bottled in July. Drink 2026-2050.

The 2023 Riesling Westhofener Kirchspiel Grosses Gewächs is from vines that average 50 years old. Pure, serene, ripe lemon is suffused with creaminess and an ethereal overtone on the nose. The palate is a picture of juicy citrus, lemon balm and white peach. It’s concentrated and zesty but also creamy, with inherent depth and a stoniness that becomes gently textural. It lines the mouth with tingling freshness and some pleasant astringency that only helps to accentuate the finesse and brightness. This finishes with gorgeous length. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2060.

Vines aged 60 years. Just 20 cm of topsoil over limestone. First vintage with Kirchspiel on the label was 2002. Tank sample.
Initially more restrained than the Von der Fels, but with intense, deeply mined purity of citrus fruit and a touch of just-ripe apricot plus the merest hint of herbs and stony/smoky minerality. Creamy, too, from the long lees ageing, which has clothed the upright backbone in a softer flesh. That stony character is more marked on the palate, as well as a pithy texture that brings another layer to the fruit. Some grip on the finish. Layered, long, captivating finesse without being showy. The flavours go on and on until the wine seems to take up residence in your mouth. Then a lift of freshness on the finish. As the wine warms, just a touch of honey at the very end even though the wine is bone dry. Drink 2025-2038.

Kirchberg is the highest and coolest vineyard in the village of Ribeauville lying closest to the forest which has cooling breezes drifting down from the afternoon and all evening. From this higher and cooler site this wine is consistently one of the freshest and raciest Rieslings in Alsace. The Kientzler holding is very close to the forest and also located quite high on the slope.

From the third smallest Grand Cru in Alsace, Kientzler are one of just four producers to own a part of what is widely regarded as one of Alsace's finest vineyards. Rising steeply above the northern edge of the town the vineyard is mostly covered in narrow terraces held in place with rock walls and seemingly endless stairs leading ever higher until one reaches Osterberg Grand Cru.

Maybe missing a little mid-palate stuffing ... racy, anyway, with some powdery pucker in tow and great texture. Feels polished, primped and preened. Drink by 2040.

Riesling comes in many different forms – skin contact, fermentation in oak, wild ferment, etc, – but there is a classic style of Riesling that never goes out of date. Mort’s Block epitomises that classic approach in its concentration of fruit and singular purity of expression. Floral and spring-like in scent: citrus blossom, lime, spicy musk, orange peel. Youthful, taut in structure with emerging white peach, ginger spice and citrus flavours. Time is on its side. Mort’s Block, which is the basis for this label, boasts old vines planted in 1970 and grown on red loamy soils over limestone. That limestone plays a role. There’s an almost effortless balance here with mineral-laced fineness. Watervale Riesling in a great year deserves more time in the cellar, but few will be able to resist opening a bottle right now. Trail blazers of cool climate viticulture, Granite Hills is perched atop the spectacular boulder strewn hills of the Great Dividing Range at an altitude of 550 meters. Established in 1970 by fourth generation farmers Gordon and Heather Knight, the 12 hectare vineyard is now run by their son Llew Knight and wife Andrea.
The Granite Hills plantings are the oldest in the Macedon Ranges region; their roots now well down into the old granitic sandy loam soils. It’s the good drainage and low fertility attributes of the soil at Granite Hills which is so beneficial to the balance of the vine, keeping the yields low and the quality of the grapes high. This is reinforced by the nature of the vineyard being very exposed to the prevailing winds – a factor which tends to lower humidity and therefore disease pressure as well as naturally limiting yields. The ripening season at Granite Hills is long due to the Southern latitude and altitude. This has the beneficial effect of allowing fruit characteristics to develop whilst still retaining good natural acidity.
An exceptional Victorian Riesling that combines an intense flavour profile with outstanding power and mouth watering acidity.
With its original Riesling plantings dating back to 1971, the estate Riesling is produced from a selection of vines with an average age typically between 20-25 years old. Brilliant water like core with distinct highlights of green skirting the edges. Pronounced lemon and lime aromas fill the nostrils followed by some orange rind, wet steel, talc and mineral notes. Showing that the brilliance of the 2022 vintage for Riesling wasn’t just restricted to Clare Valley, like so many of its 2022 counterparts this wine delivers fabulous concentration and drive. Scrumptious lemon, lime and orange rind flavours are underpinned by crunchy acidity with notions of wet steel, chalky talc and vibrant mineral characters ensuing. Exceptional power with a long intensely flavoured, mouth watering finish.

Hand-picked with careful selection 4–6 April at 20–22 Brix. Whole-bunch pressed, settled for 72 hours with bentonite. Fermented in tank for 16 days. Bottled 25 August 2020. Production: 3,851 bottles (2,000 cork-stoppered and 1,851 screwcapped) plus 69 magnums. TA 6.8 g/l, pH 2.91, RS 1.9 g/l.
Very lively, floral nose. Cutting acidity and a bit hard on the end. Less obvious fruit than, say, the 2020 Rheingau Riesling trocken from Eva Fricke that I have just been tasting. But it’s certainly pure and precise and I should imagine it will age well. And it’s in stark contrast to the over-perfumed, over-sweetened NZ Rieslings that have predominated. Drink 2022 - 2028.

Complex little thing it is. I’m thinking chamomile, Japanese ginger, sour green apple and lemon barley water. It’s quite grippy and spicy, all chalk and brick dust, some bitter lemon, slightly sour but juicy, and a long fresh finish. It’s a wine of interest and personality, and it’s very good to drink. Drink 2019-2027.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
