2019 Kientzler Osterberg Grand Cru Riesling
The Kientzler family has been growing vines for more than five generations in Ribeauvillé and the surrounding area. Today, the Kientzlers farm almost 14ha of vines in Ribeauvillé, Bergheim, Hunawihr and Riquewihr, including significant parcels in the Grand Crus of Geisberg, Osterberg and Kirchberg. Winemaking is handled by Thierry Kientzler, while his brother Eric manages the commercial side of the business.
Osterberg represents the most classic Riesling profile among the Grand Cru sites Kientzler work with. The soils in this east facing vineyard are a mix of marl, sandstone and limestone, and the average vine age is over 50 years old producing flinty and mineral inflected wines.
So tight and firm with major, chalky minerality, this is a very striking dry riesling that has the depth of expression we expect from the Grand Cru category wines. So much Amalfi lemon and lemon curd, but also dill and parsley aromas. Serious depth and structure at the bold and crisp finish. Drink or hold.
