Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners.

Excellent conditions in the 2015 growing year set the Icewine grapes up for success. With a few freeze/thaw occurrences throughout the winter months the sugar levels and flavour concentrations were at their peak just prior to the Icewine grape harvest. The consistent frigid weather allowed us to reach our optimum harvesting temperature which enables us to maintain our high quality standards with the desired sugar levels and acidities in good balance. January 4th, 2016 brought ideal temperatures of -10º C to begin Inniskillin’s thirty-second Icewine harvest. One of the quickest on record, Vineyard Director Gerald Klose and Winemaker Bruce Nicholson began early morning and finished picking all estate fruit and receiving all grower fruit by the end of the day January 5th.

This unique Canadian product was harvested at the height of Canada’s crisp winter. Naturally frozen on the vine and then picked when the temperature drops to a frigid -10°C. Only a few drops of concentrated nectar can be squeezed from each bunch. The juice is then slowly fermented to achieve a rich, specialty wine know as Icewine. This 2015 Riesling Icewine was fermented at a cool 15°C for 21 days until a perfect balance of sugar, alcohol and acidity remained.

Tasting notes: Aromatics of fresh orange, lemon, lime and spice . On the palate this rich and elegant Icewine boasts smooth texture and concentrated flavours of peach and apricot along with a hint of clove balanced by a crisp, lively acidity.Residual sugar 235 g/l.

Machine harvested and a cool fermentation. Endowed with amiable flesh and spice while upholding impressive tension and zest, this is an impeccably assembled riesling at a fantastic price. Picked at precisely the right instant, shot with exact lime and Granny Smith apple fruit. Fine-tuned phenolic control is tricky at this level of concentration, calling for a steady hand in both the vines and the winery. Drink by 2030.

The palate has very high energy and tension with a driving acidity and powerful undertone that will unravel for years to come. The 2024 The Florita Riesling is tense and tightly coiled, with lemon zest, beeswax, green apple, cheesecloth, white pepper and shaved fennel. I find this to be quite a compact and savory iteration of the Florita, far less floral and talc-like than other years. I am looking to the acid drive and the phenolic presence for direction here, and both suggest that patience may be rewarded. 12.4% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2028-2039.

In a word: excellent. This 2022 Watervale Riesling has soapstone, lavender, lime flesh, pumice stone phenolics and very fine, curvy acidity. It sits well in the mouth, and it lingers through into a long finish. It's incredible value for the money from one of the shining star producers in the region, going from strength to strength under the young/fresh leadership of the third-generation Barry brothers (Sam, in commercial, Tom, winemaker). It won a trophy at the QLD Wine Show 2022. Drink 2022-2042.

Round and juicy as well as saline and with mineral grip on the palate, this is a dense and stimulating saline and frisky Spätlese from one of the finest Mosel terroirs. Underneath, there is a touch of shy fruit which becomes wonderfully clear on the palate: tart Mirabelle jelly, with an urgent, pervasive, delicious freshness heightening the balanced sweetness even more. A yeasty texture adds an extra dimension but it is the fine, bright acidity absolutely guiding this wine. Totally mouth-watering. (Sweet). Drink 2030-2050.

Crystalline and refined on the palate, this is an intense, complex and mouth-tickling Sonnenuhr Spätlese with remarkable purity, savoriness and lemon freshness on the finish. This is a light but substantial, dense and structured WSU that will benefit from further bottle aging, The phenols are still quite prominent here, but aeration will help to oxidize and integrate them. 7% stated alcohol. More air brings wonderfully ripe notions of lemon zest, not quite candied but delightfully ripe. The palate is rounded, concentrated, profound and full of golden yet citrus-edged fruit. Slightly richer than the other Spätlesen but beautifully long with alluring ripe lemon and lime freshness. Weightless substance. Wonderful. (Sweet). Drink 2030-2050.

The 2021 Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese is very clear, bright and elegant on the saline and beautifully balanced nose that delivers bright and quite intense fruit aromas intermingled with weathered slate and also citrus aromas. On the palate, this is a round and intense, mouth-filling and lush, almost creamy-textured Himmelreich with a long, complex and saline finish. It needs some time, though. 7.5% stated alcohol. The nose of the 2021 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese shows a touch of smoke, followed by vividly fruity ripeness, redolent of melon, juicy pear, and flinty peach. The palate is full and sinuous, the sweetness absolutely channeled into juicy, energetic and mouth-watering flow. A yeasty undertow lends texture and an additional dimension. The 2021 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese opens with a clear, bright and elegant bouquet of great detail and finesse. Finely weathered yet still crunchy blue slate and maybe some saffron notes populate this remarkably finessed and elegant yet also intense and flinty nose that leads to a lush, round, crystalline and sustainably saline, very long and expressive finish with a crunchy/saline slate bite. The 2021 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese is from the smallest parcel the Prüms have, of just 0.6ha. Smoky, funky reduction can barely cloud the vivid citrus notes that break through - hints of tangerine are laced with lime and have beautiful crushed citrus foliage highlights. The sweetness on the palate amplifies the citrus purity, raising it to precision and high aromatic allure with bright acidity. This is incisive, vivid, invigorating and super-bright. What a treasure, what a celebration of citrus, what an incredible balance. (Sweet). Drink 2030-2050.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
