Bold, rich and sumptuous with classic Jasper Hill structure and a long energetic finish.

Georgia’s Paddock contains twelve hectares of Shiraz resulting in an average yield of about three tonnes per hectare. Planted on its own roots in 1975/76 on basaltic rock from the Cambrian period at an altitude of 320 meters. The dry-grown vines here have to rely on natural rainfall only, producing fruit with the immense concentration that the winery is known for.
Magnificent depth of colour featuring a saturated inky black heart along with a near equally deep black dark red hue. Wafting through the nostrils with great authority are aromas of ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark plum followed by spicy vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered earth notes. Bold, rich and sumptuous, the sizeable palate manages to retain remarkable underlying freshness. Opulent blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and ripe blueberry fruits engage every corner of the mouth, showing outstanding concentration and drive. Spicy vanillin cedar, subtle scorched earth, fennel and pepper elements the undercard. Firmly built yet perfectly integrated tannin structure. Concludes exceptionally long and energetic with lashings of ripe fruit.
Drink over the next 10-15 years.

Here is a first-rate lesson on soils and what they contribute to wine. Georgia hails from red, iron-oxide–rich, ancient Cambrian soils that have brought the most astonishing natural balance in '24. The boldness we associate with Georgia is there, but so too a well-delivered fineness of expression that seems to belie the 15.5% abv. The fruit is black and ripe, the spices soar, the oak is well integrated and a ferrous minerality adds a brightness and spark to everything. The tannins are firm but still welcoming, and it just gels so beautifully, so resoundingly. Drink by 2042.

This is a great bottling of this famed central Victorian icon. Layers of black and blue fruits intertwine with a mineral-edged undertone, showing aromas of graphite, ferric earth, spices, violets, blackberries and licorice. The palate is seamlessly integrated, with a fine backbone of acidity and almost silken tannins. An excellent wine that balances fruit, earth and vineyard character, all pulled together with a high level of polish. Excellent. Drink or hold.

    2023 Lignier-Michelot Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvee Bertin
    Burgundy, FRANCE
    $240. 00
    Bottle
    $2880.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13%
    Closure: Cork

The Lignier family have deep roots in the village of Morey Saint Denis and own 10.5 hectares of some of the very best vineyard sites in this village, along with plots in the two neighbouring villages of Chambolle Musigny and Gevrey Chambertin. In the last 10 years Virgile Lignier has modified his wine-making using whole-bunch vinification ranging from 30-100% depending on the vintage and the vineyard, and he has also reduced the percentage of new oak for maturation with most wines seeing around 30% making its effect seamless in the final wines. They are wines which are often very seductive at a young age which also clearly have the potential for ageing superbly. This very young domaine is now regarded among the very best in the Cotes de Nuits.

Virgile makes his Gevrey villages cuvee mostly from a parcel of .53 ha of vines planted in 1969 in Les Seuvrees which borders on to grand cru Charmes Chambertin close to the Morey St Denis border.

An overtly floral-suffused nose features ripe and dark fruit aromas cut with earth and humus wisps. Once again the mouthfeel of the medium-bodied flavors is super-sleek thanks mainly to the fine-grained tannins shaping the energetic and solidly complex finale. This isn't particularly dense but the balance is impeccable. Drink through 2031+.

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Bertin is 100% whole cluster this year. The stems are neatly assimilated on the nose with traces of black pepper and freshly tilled loam. The palate is medium-bodied, lively and quite assertive with striking black peppery notes on the entry. It has gentle grip and stems that define the finish, but there is sufficient fruit to soak them up with age. This will be intriguing to watch mature in bottle. Drink 2026-2042.

From Creux Brouillards, Seuvrées and Murots with 100% whole bunch vinification. A crimson edge to the purple colour. The nose is most welcoming, with rich strawberry fruit, evident on the nose, and following through almost decadently on the palate until the whole bunch spice restores some discipline. A lovely wine to enjoy in the relatively near future. Drink from 2028-2032.

This tiny vineyard of en la rue de Vergy is just over three hectares in size and borders directly on to three grand cru vineyards of Bonnes Mares, Clos de Tart and Clos des Lambrays. Virgile owns 1.9 ha of vines planted 1975 situated quite high on the slope just above Clos de Tart where the limestone is quite close to the surface, similar to the highest vineyards in Chambolle Musigny which it borders on the southern side.

Once again there is a vaguely liqueur-like character to the aromas of dark currant, spice and abundant floral elements, especially violet and lilac. The mouthfeel of the lighter weight flavors is also super-sleek and beautifully detailed with more evident minerality suffusing the balanced and impressively long finale. Lovely. Drink through 2031+.

The 2023 Morey-Saint-Denis en la Rue de Vergy has a more introspective nose than last year and demands coaxing, reluctantly revealing black plum and raspberry scents, hints of Earl Grey and a light marine influence. The palate is beautifully balanced with impressive red cherry and wild strawberry notes, gentle grip and a judicious touch of pepper on the finish. This is a level-up from the previous vintage. Liqueur-like aromas of spicy red berries display a top note of violet. The super-sleek, delicious and vibrant middle weight flavors exude an appealing minerality on the balanced, dusty and youthfully austere finale. This needs to develop more depth but that should reasonably occur if given a chance. Drink through 2030+.

The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes comes from two lieux-dits on clay and more limestone soils. This is quite open and generous on the lightly extracted and finely delineated nose with red berries, touches of incense and sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied and quite elegant in style with fine tannins and a fleshy, smooth, lightly spiced finish. It's delightful, even if outshone by Lignier's range of Morey Premier Crus. Drink 2026-2038.

80% whole bunches. Mid purple, not the deepest. It was necessary to be very careful in the vinification to avoid the wine showing too much Morey character, I am told. The bouquet is light, within the context of Virgile’s wines, quite floral, and with certainly a pleasing finesse across the palate, adequate acidity and very good length. A very accomplished Chambolle. Drink from 2029-2034.

From a parcel in Savigny-les-Beaune named Les Guettotes, this cuvee broadens the domaine's range beyond its Cotes de Nuits stronghold. The vines sit on well-draining soils that contribute to a wine of accessibility while retaining the structure that characterises Virgile's style.

A cooler and less expressive nose derives from the dark side of the fruit spectrum while adding subtle spice and floral elements. The supple and vibrant, if not especially dense, flavors exude evident minerality on the bright, delicious and equally refreshing finish that is slightly firmer. Drink through 2027+.

The 2023 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Guettotes comes from purchased fruit. This has a refined, well-defined and focused bouquet with vivid red cherry and crushed strawberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied, clean and fresh, with light tannins and just a touch of white pepper toward the finish. Elegant in style, drink this puppy over the next five or six years. The second vintage – Virgile destemmed the first year, but used 30% stems this time. Rich purple, a bouquet full of dark red fruit energy, with good tension behind, and the peppery end note from the stems. An attractive village level Savigny, slightly less ripe in this cooler site. Rich and enveloping with a long, expansive finish that displays a Burgundian like refinement.

Elanto Vineyard is fast becoming one of the most compelling projects on the Mornington Peninsula. Established in 2018 by Elizabeth and Tony Todaro with Sandro Mosele at the helm, the 10.6-hectare Balnarring site is planted at an extraordinary density over 11,000 vines per hectare, four times the regional norm. Yields are kept to just 300-500g per vine, resulting in small, concentrated bunches that carry the depth and power Sandro has long championed. Volcanic red soils, southeast exposure, and the cooling influence of Western Port Bay provide the setting, while meticulous organic farming and uncompromising vineyard detail push the wines into rare territory.

The three Chardonnay vineyards, Verge, Buckshot, and Seawinds, span 4 hectares on the lower slopes, where silt over clay transitions to lighter, gravelly soils rich in buckshot. The cool southerly airflow and soil profile preserve natural acidity and enhance mineral notes. Each vineyard was harvested and vinified separately, with hand-sorted fruit whole-bunch pressed directly into a mix of new and older French oak barriques for natural fermentation. After 10 months in barrel, the wine spent an additional two months in large concrete vats before bottling.

Brilliant pale straw colour with green highlights around the outskirts and a watery hue. Intense white peach, pear, ripe nectarine and dried honey aromas engulf the olfactory senses. Notions of crème brulee, citrusy nougat, cashew, subtle bacon fat and spice then chime in for additional complexity. Rich, concentrated and enveloping, a creamy textural feel is perfectly counterpointed by fresh acidity with mouthfilling white peach, fleshy pear and nectarine fruits melding into a creme brulee, citrusy nougat, delicate cashew and spice back drop. Boasting outstanding power and depth, it has a long expansive finish that displays a Burgundian like refinement.

A terrific follow up to the inaugural release, coming out with more weight and body. Mid-straw gold and bright. Floral and waxy with lemon, spiced stone fruit, brown spices and honeycomb – lots within yet definitely in the savoury spectrum. Fuller bodied, rich, almost al dente with its phenolics and layers of texture via creamy, nutty lees. It’s detailed yet supple, with a succulence thanks to the all-important uplifting acidity. Moreish and compelling. Drink by 2034.

Jane Faulkner – James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion

The Elanto vineyard – at Balnarring on the Mornington Peninsula – is 10.6 hectares of 11,111 vines each hectare, which equates to a vineyard made up of 117, 777 individual vines. This is the second release of a chardonnay from this remarkable vineyard. It’s made by Sandro Mosele. 85% of this release went through malo where very little of the 2023 release did.
This is seriously good. The intensity of fruit is the thing, and the associated length, though there’s a keen textural element and just plenty of wow factor besides. Yellow peach, citrus, nougat, honeycomb and lemon blossom notes charge thoughout. There’s a lot of fruit, a deal of acidity, and a sizeable serve of oak, but all work together and all feel commanding. Drink 2027-2032+

The 2024 Balnarring Chardonnay is tighter, brighter and more primary than the 2023 tasted alongside. In the mouth, the wine is svelte and textural, and it shows all the sophistication of the site. The elevated malolactic percentage here contributes to the elevated sense of creaminess in the mouth. It's an excellent wine and will be even better in time. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam. The fruit is handpicked into 10-kilogram baskets. The winery and vineyard are adjacent, and once in the winery, the fruit goes over a sorting table with rollers at the end of the elevator. The fruit is pressed direct to barriques—all French, mainly Sirugue (from the Forêt de Tronçais, in central France)—and fermented wild, with wild malolactic fermentation (5% to 10%). The 2023 Chardonnay wouldn't go through wild malolactic fermentation, but the red eventually did. The wine is taken out of barrel at Christmastime, after which it spends two months in concrete, and then goes to stainless for a further four months. Drink 2025-2039.

Volcanic red soils, southeast exposure, and the cooling influence of Western Port Bay provide the setting, while meticulous organic farming and uncompromising vineyard detail push the wines into rare territory.

The five Pinot Noir vineyards, Vertex, Ironstone, Chicory, Kilnside, and Basalt, span 6.7 hectares on the upper slopes with basalt-rich soils. The red volcanic soils transition to shallower, stonier terrain mid-slope, producing lower yields, concentrated flavors, and a distinct tannin profile. Each vineyard was harvested and vinified separately, with chilled, destemmed fruit (3-5% whole bunches) undergoing cold soak and natural fermentation in concrete vats. After 25-30 days on skins, the wine was pressed and aged in a mix of new and older French oak barriques for 11 months before blending and bottling.

Dark red core with black toned edges and a red to dark red hue. Perfumed aromas of violet, dark cherry, strawberry and anise soar from the glass trailed by some spicy cedar, forest floor, subtle dried herb and brambly rhubarb like notes. Rich, supplely textured dark cherry, strawberry and anise flavours expand across the palate with a peacock’s tail like power wave. Spicy cedar, rhubarb, forest floor, delicate infusions of dried herbs and bramble are spread across the back half. Seamlessly integrated, velvet smooth tannins and fresh underlying acidity. Finishes super seductive and very long.

What a beguiling wine – only the second release and showing complexity far beyond its years. It’s certainly youthful and pretty with heady aromas of florals and autumn leaves with flavours of wild strawberries, dark cherries and pips, chinotto, Middle Eastern spices and some poached rhubarb, too. The medium-bodied palate is evenly poised, laden with filigree tannins (lots of them) and energising acidity; oak (25% new) completely integrated. This has depth, some grip, a little amaro bitterness on the finish and, of utmost importance, it will age but it’s oh-so pleasing to drink today. Drink by 2036.

The intensity of fruit here is fantastic, as is the length of the finish, as is the tannin profile. This wine is out of the ordinary on these matters alone. It tastes of stewed red and black cherries, peppercorns, cedar and undergrowth, the dry crackle of the finish – yet sluiced with fruit – one for the ages. A superbly finessed and beautifully poised Hunter Valley Shiraz.

Fruit was sourced from the Old Hill vineyard planted in 1880, the Old Paddock vineyard planted in 1921 and Rosehill vineyard in 1946. Totally opaque black dark red heart with a bright red to dark red hue. Refined yet intense, the nose is flooded with red liquorice, plum and dark cherry scents which are complimented by earth, vanillin cedar, violet and peppered herb notes. Rich yet understated, the superbly finessed palate carries a supple flow of red liquorice, red plum and ripe cherry fruits which meld into a vanillin cedar, subtlety scorched earth, dried herb, gentle clove and pepper back drop. Beautifully poised, light on it’s feet and supple, it possesses a Pinot like power wave and fresh underlying acidity. Very fine yet grainy like tannins with an exceptionally long red fruited finish that combines savouriness with elegance.

Maurice O'Shea is the flagship blend of the best parcels from the finest vineyards of the Mount Pleasant estate. For this vintage, the vineyards included the 1880 vines of Old Hill and the Rosehill 1946 vines, with all grapes hand picked, destemmed and sorted, leaving the whole berries to soak before fermentation. The result is a stylish, medium-weight shiraz with incredible flavour intensity and an inherent lightness and energy. Beautifully supple, it bursts with warm strawberry fruit, enhanced by nuanced, fragrant oak. The mid-palate has impressive weight, while the intense, succulent flavours on the finish are captivating and memorable. Though it will cellar for decades, its remarkable approachability makes it hard to resist opening now. Drink by 2043.

Wow, just wow. You know the blending bench has had tireless hours of tasting and conversation for this wine. The icon, the flagship, the cumulation of vintage and pedigree. It is a work of art, in every sense, and captures the magic of Mount Pleasant. Waves and curls of raspberry puree, rosehip and Alpine strawberry. A hint of Kirsch and bilberry. An undeniable sandy clay earthiness is tangible in each sip followed by white pepper, billy tea tannins and carried by eloquent and effortless acidity. It’s seamless to be quite frank and hard to imagine how the $ figure covers it. This will make you proud to be living in the state of New South Wales let alone the continent. At an early pre release this is drinking stonkingly well and will continue to evolve in ways the mind can only imagine. A magical mystical vintage of Maurice O’Shea!

Rich blackcurrant, ripe mulberry and liquorice fruits line the mid weighted palate and show excellent concentration. Cedary tobacco, earth and infusions of bay leaf ensue. Estate fruit. Maturation in (30% new) oak for 14 months. Blackberries on the bush, blackcurrants and juniper berries. Baked red clay, driftwood and dried bush greens. Bay leaf and caperberry. There is a crackle of dried leaves to the sound this wine gives out. It's as Australian as ’dry as a bone’. Cedar, tea brewing in a billy and all the nostalgia. Oak and saltbush are part of the fabric of the wine. Just splendid. Drink by 2035.

I have called this wine the gateway drug to Mount Pleasant’s wine before, but it is also the wine I would choose to drink most frequently in my home, for this suits almost all cuisines, occasions and allowances. The 2024 incarnation being an early vintage shows some very pretty rose and hibiscus florals. Red cherries, translucent lingonberries and dried red clay. Dusty cumin and mocha spice with some savoury oolong tea tannins across the middle palate. It’s lively as all Mount Henry wines often are and acidity manages to flow fairly evenly making for an addictive little sip. A tad more flesh and grab-able curves to this vintage. Might be a nice wine to show off your beef tartare skills. Drink now or will cellar for another 3-5 years further. Drink 2025-2030.

I could review this in one word: buy. I am a long-time lover of the wines of the Hunter Valley and indeed, especially, of Tyrrell’s and Mount Pleasant. But wow, does this wine have character, and difference, and its own unique take. It has ferrous/blood-like characters, and violet notes, and blueberries, and potpourri, and woodsmoke, and cherries, and mace. It’s fine dining in a bottle. It’s medium in weight at most but there’s enough flavour and texture to hang onto, and the finish is fresh, spicy, mouthwatering and persistent. It has you at hello and you’re still hanging on its every word at goodbye.

A fresh, nicely fleshed Chablis like Chardonay.

Renowned Chablis producer J.Moreau & Fils have branched out from their traditional roots to produce this very affordable Chardonnay that’s quite Chablisisque like. Vins de France is a relatively new appellation that allows winemakers to source grapes from different French regions and allows for a greater liberty in winemaking techniques.
Brilliant pale straw colour with hints of green around the edges and a watery hue. Aromas of ripe peach and pear mix with dried honey and wet stone notes. Nicely fleshed pear, lime and green apple fruits meld into a stony mineral back drop. Fresh acidity with a shapely river stone like feel to the lengthy finish.

Comes mostly from a single vineyard in Lyndoch within the Barossa and after gentle fermentation and plunging it was matured for 17 months in mostly seasoned French oak and about 20% American. Hatcher has chosen not to use any new oak, and it seems to be a good call. The fruit has power, poise and structure. Has a grainy minerality contributing to its vibrancy and energy. A classy wine from a classy winemaker. Drink 2024-2039.

Shiraz sourced from the parish of Lyndoch in the south of the Barossa Valley. A vivid magenta-splashed crimson in the glass with a swell of pure blackberry, blood plum and blueberry that unfurls on the palate. Hints of baking spices, tobacco, dark chocolate bullets, pan juices, clove, softly spoken vanillin oak and turned earth. The tannin profile is of real interest here, kinetic and showing elasticity, with a lightly compacted powdered stone feel. Great length of flavour and fruit purity, too; it's a super southern Barossa drink. Drink by 2038.

Very attractive red cherry fruit fills out the medium-bodied palate where the fine tannins underline this very well. Impressive length with plenty of licorice and a touch of candied citrus at the long, crisp and emphatically dry finish. A cuvee based on grenache and mourvedre. From organically grown grapes. A terrific vintage for this wine, which was bottled just a couple of weeks prior to my late June visit, the 2021 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel is a blend of 30% each Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus 10% Cinsault. From a vineyard just outside the boundaries of the appellation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, it's a remarkably consistent wine and always a solid value. Scents of sunbaked stones, black cherries and licorice appear on the nose, joined by hints of purple raspberries and dark chocolate, while the medium to full-bodied palate is lush and velvety, finishing long and complex. Defined by exuberant aromas of lilacs, iodine and purple fruit set in relief against a deftly hewn tannic structure with hints of licorice and a ripple of maritime freshness. Chardonnay is the hero at Coppabella but this Pinot Noir does everything that it can to change that narrative. It’s an excellent Pinot Noir. It’s structural, it’s spicy, it has a floral prettiness and yet it feels serious, well-fruited and persistent. You can admire this wine from all angles. It tastes of stewed cherries, fresh strawberries, a run of sweet spice notes and something akin to red roses. It’s varietal, tasty, tannic and more-ish.

2023 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Bourgogne Haut-Cotes de Beaune Blanc Au Bout du Monde
    Burgundy, FRANCE
    $130. 00
    Bottle
    $1560.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

After leaving his family domaine in 2005, Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey has established himself as one of the rising stars of Burgundy. Pierre-Yves has built a strong reputation for crafting exquisite white Burgundy that display energy and vitality. The white wines are whole bunch pressed, fermented with natural yeasts, aged on lees for up to 18 months in mostly in 350 litre barrels with no lees stirring and no filtration. The corks used come from one tiny supplier and are extra long and extra wide (55mm x 25mm) for the village, 1er cru and Grand cru wines and are untreated with no paraffin and the bottles are then sealed with soft wax to ensure no problems with premature oxidation. The resulting wines are built to age classically up to 10 years or more.

Purchased in 2014, and with 2015 the first vintage released, this Bourgogne Haut-Cotes hails from the hillside lieu-dit of En Creuzilly at a height of 420 metres. With more clay in the soils here this wine shows ample depth yet does require some patience before showing all it has to offer. A serious rendition of the appellation.

    Other Reviews....
Ripe and fresh aromas include those of petrol, straw, white orchard fruit and barely enough wood influence to mention. The round, plump and juicy flavors possess reasonably good verve before concluding in a bitter lemon-tinged finale. This should drink well after only a few years of keeping. Drink through 2026+.

Smoky white orchard fruit and floral scents leads to soft and caressing, if not especially concentrated, flavors that exude a subtle bead of minerality on the similar lemon-tinged finale. This could use better depth so 2 to 3 years of keeping should help. Drink through 2027+.

The 2023 Saint-Aubin Village offers up a gently reductive bouquet of white flowers, pear and toasted bread. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and precise, it's long and racy, concluding with chalky grip.

The 2023 Saint-Aubin Village is a blend of four or five parcels. This is already quite seductive with hints of vanilla pod and almond flakes on the well-defined nose. The palate is well balanced, fresh and poised with a keen line of acidity and a malic finale of green apple and pear. The 2023 doesn't quite deliver the complexity of the previous vintage, but it will drink well for several years. Drink 2026-2035.

Sourced from the Bas des Duresses premier cru on Auxey’s eastern flank, this bottling channels the site’s stony soils and cooler exposition into a finely etched expression of Pinot Noir, shaped by Pierre-Yves’s characteristically restrained hand.

The site is known for producing wines of both breadth and precision, marrying the village’s characteristic generosity with a fine mineral thread, qualities that align seamlessly with Pierre-Yves’s restrained and terroir-driven style.

One plot is in Boudriotte itself and one in Fairendes, vinified together. The Fairendes component is older with very small grapes, so this was vinified as whole bunches, added into the fermentation vat in layers alternating with the destemmed fruit. A deeper more robust purple, a clear heady raspberry fruit, still with lees in suspension, and a tannin or two. Drink from 2029-2035.

In 2014 Caroline took her share of some family vineyards from her father Jean-Marc and created her own domaine based in Chassagne-Montrachet, working out of brand new cellars built for Caroline and her husband.

For her first vintage in 2014 she had small holdings in Chassagne-Montrachet for both red and white together with small holdings in Santenay and Hautes Cotes de Beaune totaling just 2.4 hectares. With more vineyards added both from family and acquisitions in the last few years, the total is now 7 hectares in total for Caroline with roughly half for red and half for whites.

Caroline Morey's Santenay Rouge hails from vines located in the lieu-dit of Le Chainey in the southern sector of Santenay quite high on the slope adjoining Permier Cru Grand Clos Rousseau, and is aged in 30% new barrels.

Bottling occures in November after 12 months ageing in barrel to capture the freshness, and while a serious example it is often approachable young.

A discreet application of wood is present on the overtly pepper-inflected aromas of earthy and ripe dark berry scents along with a touch of the sauvage. The delicious, caressing and sappy flavors also contrast with the grippy, rustic and short finish. Once again, this robust effort is not particularly well-balanced and my guess, given the relatively easy-going mid-palate texture, is that this is not 'on form' today but may very well come together in time. With that said, for the moment it's pretty awkward. Drink through 2029+.

A notably more floral-suffused nose speaks mostly of red cherry, wild currant and warm earth. The sappy and seductively textured flavors possess solid punch and a subtle bead of minerality that adds a bit of verve to the equally dusty and firm if somewhat short finish. Again, I suspect that the abrupt finish is a phase that will eventually age out with a few years of cellaring. Drink through 2029+.

    Other Reviews....
The E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis 2021 Barolo Mosconi is structured, linear and ultimately quite mineral in character compared to the Cannubi. Its firm underlying architecture is rendered light and fragrant thanks to aromas of blue flower, grilled herb (with both rosemary and aniseed) and pulverized stone. Fruit comes from a site in Monforte d'Alba at a cool 370 meters in elevation. I came back to this bottle 24 hours after my first tasting and remarked on the elegant, chalky nature of the tannins. 9,000 bottles were produced. Drink 2027-2055.

The 2021 Barolo Mosconi is ample, creamy and resonant in the glass in its first impression. Dark red/blue fruits, leather, lavender, spice and menthol build with some coaxing. There's plenty of Mosconi substance, but Chiara Boschis has done a terrific job in taming the tannins here. This is one of the most refined wines I have ever tasted from the Mosconi cru. Time in the glass brings out the wine's structural presence, while floral overtones and insistent tannins support the driving finish. Drink 2028-2041.

This Barolo opens up with aromas of bright cherries, cedar and a touch of sliced mushrooms. Medium-bodied with incisive freshness. The tannins are restrained, almost timid. The wine is overall compact and solid. Very well constructed and cohesive. Needs three years to soften, but it’s really enjoyable to taste.

With a slightly deeper jeweled ruby hue, the 2021 Barolo Mosconi is more contemplative, offering layered notes of cedar, cherry cordial, Asian spices, sweet herbs, and pressed flowers. It reveals broader polished depth on the palate, with ripe, refined tannins, and a long, even-keeled finish with persistent mineral underpinnings. It is only going to improve as it leans into these more brooding tertiary layers of truffle and leather, and it will be worth waiting for. Drink 2026-2056.

Selected from the estate’s oldest plot within Mosconi, this is the only one of Chiara Boschis’ Barolos still aged exclusively in barriques. The cool, fresh site sees significant diurnal temperature differences typically giving a powerful wine that needs tempering and, above all, time. The 2021 harnesses that vigour and potential masterfully. A marvellous mix of sweet spice, forest roots and stony minerals evoke a palpable sense of territory. Profound in its depths, it boasts juicy acidity with plush tannins you can sink your teeth into. Long, textural and enveloping with dark cherry, plum and hints of bitter cocoa, this is a complete and compelling package. Drink 2027 - 2043.

This wine represents a blend of fruit from various sites, and 15,000 bottles were created. Showing a classical profile, the E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis 2021 Barolo Via Nuova delivers a firm sense of inner fiber and richness with dark blueberry and black fruit. These aromas are enhanced by ethereal tones of blue flower and aniseed. The tannins are slightly more approachable in this wine compared to the Mosconi, but the intensity and richness of the mouthfeel is about the same. Drink 2026-2050.

The 2021 Barolo Via Nuova is a gorgeous, poised wine . Bright and energetic, with tons of drive, the 2021 has so much to offer. Brisk acids and veins of tannin shape this dynamic mid-weight Barolo. Blood orange, plum, chalk and rose petal are some of the many notes that come alive with aeration. A lifted and energetic Barolo, the 2021 Barolo Via Nuovais boasts a jeweled ruby color and has a fantastic, balanced nose with notes of ripe peaches, sweet sandalwood, floral perfume, and wild strawberries. Medium-bodied, the palate is refreshing and focused, with vibrant acidity, finely coiled tannins, and a long and linear finish. Concentrated yet refined with fresh acidity counterpointing a cream tinged mouth feel.

Produced predominantly from Smith’s vineyard which was planted back in 1978, the vines are tended by leading viticulturalist Mark Walpole who was responsible for introducing a number of emerging Italian varietals to Brown Brothers North East Victorian vineyards during the 1990’s. Together with winemaker Adrian Rodda, one of Beechworth’s emerging stars, they make a formidable team.

Fleshy white peach, ripe nectarine, dried honey and biscuity nougat scents permeate the nostrils trailed by some cashew, crème brulee and subtle gun flint notes. Concentrated yet refined, the palate features white peach, pear, nectarine and dried honey flavours over biscuity nougat, faint crème brulee, delicate cashew and infusions of gun flint. Twelve months in 300L French Tronçais barrels followed by three months on lees in tank before bottling. Chardonnay, the undoubted strength of Beechworth, was one of the first fruits picked in the '24 vintage at FGR, retaining sensational, energised acidity while keeping a pretty tight flavour profile. Spring blossom aromatics mingle with tangy citrus and white peach, grilled nuts and almond nougat with a peach custard-like texture. Clean as a whistle and bright; it moves in a linear line of brisk acidity, going long and dispensing some tart grapefruit pithiness on the finish. It's early days for this little beauty. Here’s a Chardonnay with plenty of flavour, though it also keeps itself tight and tidy. Peach, pink grapefruit, cedar, spice, a vanilla creaminess and honey florals, aniseed, with a minor amount of struck match. Clos Cibonne is one of the most original domaines in Provence, celebrated for its dedication to the rare Tibouren grape and its unique style of age-worthy rosé. The estate, a Cru Classé of Côtes de Provence, lies just 800 metres from the Mediterranean, with vineyards framed by the Maures mountains and cooled by sea breezes and steady mistral winds, conditions perfectly suited to Tibouren’s thin skins and need for ventilation. Fifth-generation winemaker Olivier Deforges now oversees the 15-hectare, organically farmed estate.

Clos Cibonne’s flagship Cuvée Tradition is made from 90% Tibouren and 10% Grenache, harvested from organically farmed 30-plus-year-old vines, goblet-trained on clay-limestone soils. After fermentation with native yeasts, the wine is aged for a year in the estate’s large, century-old foudres, protected by a delicate veil of fleurette (thin layer of flor-yeast). This process gives Tradition its hallmark depth and savoury complexity, balanced by freshness, with the capacity to evolve gracefully for many years in bottle.

    Other Reviews....
Not your typical Côtes de Provence rosé. Weighty and phenolic, with real structure behind its notes of creamed melon and blood orange. A bitter mineral spine brings form. Substantial in weight and complexity, with warm spices and sun tea on the smoky finish alongside a tug of earthiness. Tibouren and Grenache. Drink now through 2027.
