Smoky aromas of acacia blossom, toasted nuts, citrus confit and pear are trimmed in all but invisible wood. There is notably better volume and richness to the even punchier medium weight flavors that possess a caressing texture that contrasts with the bright, lemony, clean dry and focused finale. This is very good for its level and also worth checking out. Drink through 2028+.

A glowing primrose yellow. Succulent with a little additional wood. Ripe limes, fresh plums, ripe apples, quite a mix of fruit descriptors. This is a Meursault of both depth and breadth, too vibrant to be old style but with the bottom that those searching after butter and hazelnuts would like. Drink from 2027-2031.

Here too there is a smoky character to the cool and pure aromas of Granny Smith apple, white flower, lemon zest and wet stone nuances. There is even better volume to the concentrated, even powerful, larger-scaled flavors that also brim with minerality on the lemony, bone dry and youthfully austere finale. This is excellent for its level though not that it's sufficiently compact to need at least a few years of keeping first. Drink through 2029+.

A paler lemon colour. More chiselled on the nose than the village blend. A little whiff of coconut from the oak. A more cerebral wine. Every bit as much intensity, arguably more, in a linear style with the energy growing steadily to the back of the palate. A fine long white fruit finish, the oak entirely integrated. Persistent. The vines are in Les Gorges de Narvaux Drink from 2027-2032.

Smoky aromas of vaguely exotic passion fruit, white peach, spice, acacia blossom and plenty of just sliced citrus serve as an elegant introduction to the succulent but energetic flavors that aren't as dense or powerful as those of the Poruzots but do offer equally good depth and even better persistence on the impeccably well-balanced finale. This is terrific and a wine that should age gracefully. Drink through 2031+.

Half and half between upper and lower Charmes. A bright rich lemon colour. Attractive but not especially demonstrative. Offering breadth and depth, there is no edge to the fruit, a significant mouthful of white orchard fruit, mostly at the back of the palate, intelligent oaking, correct acidity, and very persistent. I find more character in one or two of Jean-Pierre Latour’s wines but this is properly Charmes. Drink from 2029-2036.

Some lime, some verbena, delicate fresh apples, back to the lime blossom, then a really fine boned framework on the palate. Tingles the tastebuds in the most delicious way. A beautifully crafted 2023 Genevrières. Drink from 2029-2037.

Much like the regular cuvée, this is also quite cool and elegant with a plenitude of floral elements adding breadth to the very pretty and naturally exotic aromas of honeysuckle, white peach, anise, exotic tea and citrus confit scents. The succulent, round and impressively scaled broad-shouldered flavors display solid power on the very tightly wound, balanced and wonderfully persistent, lemony and bone-dry finish. This is also terrific. Drink through 2033+.

This special bottling comes from the top left corner of their holding. Mid lemon yellow. A sense of intensity rather than the detail up front. The wood is entirely integrated. Four barrels, out of 40 overall in Genevrières. (2 out of 13 in 2024). Two minutes in the glass and the highest class of very pure white fruit emerges. A stunning purity and subtlety before a raft of power., assisted by the age of the vines (50+) as well as the terroir. Will still be tasting this when I reach Beaune! Drink from 2030-2040.

There is a hint of phenolic character suffusing the ripe and vaguely exotic aromas of white and yellow fruit, orange peel, fennel and a wonderful array of floral nuances. There is outstanding volume to the solidly concentrated, rich and powerful yet displaying the natural class of a fine Puligny, all wrapped in a mouth coating, moderately dry and sneaky long finale. This could use more depth so plan on at least a few years of keeping. Drink through 2031+.

When Timo cheered "bring back the funk!", it was this wine that originally delivered on the promise. He's since released the Dr expression which dials up this ethos even further, but his Close Planted Pinot still holds a special place in many Pinot lover's hearts. Wonderfully aromatic and silky, the power of the Pinot fruit can be deceptive here, but there's no mistaking this is one of the Yarra Valley's finest wines each year.

All estate grown with 25% whole bunches and matured in 20% new hogsheads. A bright crimson. Leaps out of the glass with its bouquet of red and blue fruits and lifted spice. It's more violet than rose. The medium-bodied palate is luscious whilst remaining light on its feet. Succulent tannins round out a wine that will provide pleasure now and over the next six to eight years. Drink 2026-2032.

This got a quarter whole bunch in the ferment, due to the warmer year. “A wine for the suits”, says Timo, “they want a bit of everything”.
Soft and loose knit, a juiciness, a plushness, dark fruited, blue fruited, rosemary and sage leaf, white pepper, some charcuterie notes, a bit of choc-liquorice too. A spread in the palate, an easy access and appeal. Feels mass appeal in its style, but done well. Drink 2026-2029.

Described as giving it the "full beans", this is the 100% whole bunch version of Timo's trademark Pinot Noir. A wild ride on the Timo train, the Dr Pinot has all the sweet and sour, stalky and spice notes that had everyone swooning when his wines first hit the market.

From an east-facing slope at 200m and picked a week later than the Mayer pinot; 100% whole bunches. A very bright crimson purple. A great year for this idiosyncratic wine. Complex aromas of wild strawberry, a little morello cherry, warm spice and peony. You barely notice the whole bunches. A generous Dr Mayer that saturates the palate. Ripe, very persistent tannins round out a wine destined to age superbly over the next 10–12 years.

Timo sources his Syrah from a small portion of the Bloody Hill vineyard, and uses 100% whole bunch fermentation for his trademark vivid, stalky aromatics. Intense and flavourful, with plentiful texture and tannin, balanced by fresh acidity.

Made with 100% whole bunches and matured in seasoned hogsheads. A saturated crimson purple. A seductive and slightly atypical Mayer shiraz. It's a touch riper than normal with its bouquet of dark cherry, blueberry and warm spices. From the Orth vineyard in Coldstream; 100% whole bunches, matured in seasoned hogsheads. Pure and red-fruited with its aromas of raspberries, red plum and incense. Timo has a knack with whole bunches, and while they're clearly there, they are already nicely integrated in the wines. The palate is gentle, with fine, persistent tannins providing backbone. Goof stuff. Drink 2025-2029.

The wines are vinified in a mixture of stainless steel and large old wood barrels, the latter mainly for the premier and grand cru wines.

As usual, Samuel Billaud's 2023 Bourgogne d'Or Chardonnay is a blend of purchased musts from Mâconnais and Auxerrois and was aged on the lees in the tank for 12 months. Offering aromas of beeswax, pear and honeysuckle, it’s medium-bodied, broad and charming but lacks the incisive spine of acidity found in his Chablis bottlings. Drink 2025-2031.

Occhipinti is one of the hottest names in Italian wines, and their tiny production is highly sought after. Situated a mere 15km from the Mediterranean, the vineyards are 250m above sea level planted to Frappato and Nero d’Avola. Winemaking is natural and hands off, with fermentation occurring spontaneously, no temperature control, no fining, no filtration and only minimal sulphur additions at bottling.

After a difficult 2022 vintage, the 20th harvest of Il Frappato from Arianna Occhipinti, 2023, is a staggeringly beautiful wine. It’s a stop-and-stare phenomenon: I sat tasting it for half an hour and between all the adjectives, what really mattered was that I was almost ready to down tools and start drinking my way through the bottle at 2pm on a Monday. Yes, there is blood orange and cranberry, bitter cherries, the smell of rose petals after rain and some elusive spice, but what is more important is that I suddenly wanted to own cases of this wine. It’s an ambassador for Sicily, as vivid, arresting and confusing as the whole ancient island, and a reminder to resist the cliches. This is vigour, not lassitude; energy, not managed decay. It’s unmissable; a wine that sparks the kind of joy wine lovers crave. Drink 2026-2031.

The cooperative decided to reduce the production of its Riserva crus, using approximately 25%-30% of those grapes to bring greater balance to this flagship wine. The “Never Never” label speaks of the Australian bush and its people, but also something otherworldly. Established in 2016, the aim of the project is “not just to create delicious spirits, but to make the most flavoursome spirits on the market.” Combining the talents of George Georgiadis, Sean Baxter and Tim Boast, their Triple Juniper gin employs air-freighted berries for maximum freshness. The juniper is treated in three distinct ways, partially steeped, partially in the pot and partially in the vapour. The aim is to capture both the bright and the earthy qualities, and to balance the massive juniper input, a few other botanicals are used: Australian coriander provides brighter citrus and less earthiness than its English or Indian counterparts. A predominate fresh lemon citrus influence with a touch of fresh lime and liquorice adds lift over a root base of angelica and orris. Native pepperberry provides a balancing, savoury element without the heavy menthol finish of traditional peppers. Finally a hint of cinnamon hits just the right amount of warmth.

This is another Grenache from the Blewitt Springs sub-region, and it was made in a largely similar way to the other wines in the portfolio. In this case, it was aged in a mix of French oak puncheons and the smaller French oak hogsheads, so the oak uptake is a little more obvious but still not to the point of being overt. It has that slightly dusty, dried herb and spicy influence over the bright red fruits that emerge from this region. It’s seamless, it’s smooth, and there’s a velvety succulence about it, while that slightly dry savoury finish completes and balances a terrific wine. Drink 2025-2035.

An elite, top-tier producer, famously named the 2025 Halliday Winery of the Year, Giant Steps' focus on single-vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay has consistently earned them rave reviews for elegance, purity and finesse. That same care and attention to detail has been applied in making an artisanal Vermouth. Hand harvested, certified organic Viognier grapes, whole bunch pressed, wild fermented in French oak and blended with a host of botanicals macerated separately in a distillate of the mother wine (with help of Four Pillars Distillery). Two styles of Vermouth are produced, but the Semi-Dry White is considered the best. Clean, crisp and refreshing, it resonates winemaking skill, being more akin to a structured dry white than many traditional European vermouths. Measured against bar standards like Noilly Prat, it's lighter, more elegant and fresher, accenting notes of lemon and lime zest, thyme and dried apricots, with a cooling character that finishes with a fine-tuned herbal bitterness; gentian, dried orange peel tang and hints of flor sherry. The discount is of the likes we've never seen in its category - and we may never see again. The quality means you can embrace it as a standalone drink, on the rocks with a twist of orange, or use it to create superb Martinis and modern cocktails like a white Negroni, Boulevardier or Aperol Spritz. Other reviews... a very accomplished and unique product in the range of vermouth’s available, and a thoughtful evolution on the original recipe that suits the current vogue for a grown-ups aperitif...The white version I became quite smitten with. Its like summer in a glass. On the nose its a lovely honeycomb aroma (reminded me of a ripe Marsanne wine actually). It is fuller on the palette than its sister, with a dry finish and you get a hint of citrus, a note of light bitterness at the end, very nicely integrated. It is not floral or spicy like Noilly Prat and is more akin to Dolin perhaps in weight + intensity of flavours. This makes a terrific Martini. If you like yours not so astringent, then this is ideal. You don’t need a dash of Orange Bitters and the semi sweetness rounds out of the cocktail and definitely doesn’t dominate several of the gins I tried. This vermouth has small and exacting measures of botanicals, including wormwood, juniper, gentian, bay leaf, Cinchona bark, Seville orange, Meyer lemons, blood orange, green tea, Timor Pepper, Mandarin, native limes, cumquats and orris root (and many more!). Most of the botanicals were grown on our Yarra Valley Vineyards. The medieval treatise ‘Causes & Cures’ recorded the beneficial and restorative powers of all known herbs and spices.

As possibly the most consistent of the five First Growth properties, Chateau Latour is held in incredibly high esteem in the wine community. And while there have been rightfully some legendary wines made at this estate over their journey, since the purchase of the property by French billionaire François Pinault in 1993 the wines have been taken to an entirely new level. The next key step was to take greater ownership of their wine's release and distribution, moving away from wine futures following the 2011 vintage, and now Chateau Latour release wines only when they feel they are at the start of their drinking window.

The 2019 Latour is a profound wine in the making, and it will surely emerge as one of the most long-lived wines of the vintage, as well as one of the greatest. Unwinding in the glass with scents of rich cassis fruit, English walnuts, cigar wrapper, black truffle, loamy soil and violets, it’s full-bodied, layered and muscular, with huge depth at the core, ripe tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long, seemingly interminable finish. The 2019 Latour is every bit as impressive as it has always been. Silky and caressing on the palate, with exceptional balance, the 2019 has so much going on. Dark red fruit, new leather, spice and a kick of blood orange are some of the notes that build in the glass, but ultimately the 2019 impresses most with its textural finesse. There was a bit of rain during harvest, but that does not appear to have been much of an issue. The 2019 is a quintessentially modern Latour, a wine that deftly marries power with elegance. Classic Pauillac darker currants, smoky tobacco, spicy wood, damp earth, and graphite all define the 2019 Château Latour, a ripe and approachable Latour that has more accessibility than many vintages while still possessing quintessential Latour character and depth. Blended from 92.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and aged 18 months in new French oak, it's medium to full-bodied with a round, layered mouthfeel, beautiful, almost velvety tannins, and a tremendous finish. I'd happily drink a bottle today (don't tell anyone), yet it's going to benefit from 5-7 years of bottle age and keep for 50 years or more in fine form. Drink 2031-2081.

Cool straight away, fresh but so perfectly mouthfilling, not sweet like 2020, this is more cooling and fresh, blue fruit, black cherry, fleshy like fruit skin texture. Dark, I love the 2019s because they're more controlled and serious but so nuanced. To me this is how a great Pauillac can taste, serious, deep, classic Cabernet markers, lots of minerality in the flint and stoney aspects, strong tannins and a powerful, muscular structure with minty sides. An amazing Pauillac, this is really my style. Still so full of concentration and life, this will last forever. Drink 2030-2060.

Composed of 92.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7.5% Merlot, the 2019 Latour is deep garnet-purple in color. It comes barreling out of the glass with powerful notes of blackcurrant jelly, blackberry pie, and plum preserves, followed by suggestions of pencil shavings, cast-iron pan, and charcoal. The medium to full-bodied palate is exquisitely constructed with a myriad of very fine layers, supported by ripe, grainy tannins and beautiful tension, finishing epically long and mineral-laced. It's still very tightly wound and will require at least 5 to 7 more years in cellar, then should age gracefully for a good 50-years+.

Given they are under the same ownership of the Guinaudau family, Chateau Grand Village is often referred to as Chateau Lafleur’s second vineyard. The estate has been owned by the Guinaudau’s relatives for hundreds of years, however it was not until the year 2000 that they began to produce wine themselves from the property. Situated on the edge of the Fronsac region and classified as Bordeaux Superieur, the vineyard is planted to 79% Merlot and 21% Bouchets (Cabernet Franc). The terroir is similar to Saint Emilion with its mix of calcisol going down a foot or so to a bedrock mostly made up of asteria limestone. At Grand Village, they practice many of the same techniques employed at Lafleur, including pruning and de-budding adapted to each vine plant, crop thinning in summer and de-leafing. The grapes are picked by hand, followed by very careful sorting and selection. Grand Village also produces a white wine from a blend of Sauvignon Blanc (85%) and Semillon (15%), from a 5 acre plot.

Wild flower notes on the nose, smells really welcoming and very pure. Cool from the start, texture and structure from a warm vintage but with fresh acidity giving mouthwatering aspects and such liveliness. Direct and focused, but juicy in the best way. I love this expression because it’s not too strict but there’s complexity, some flesh, soft herbs and lovely red berry fruit. A little iron tang on the finish too. Very complete and approachable. Dubbed as "New Zealand's greatest winery" by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and "New Zealand's first growth" by Decanter (amongst many other superlatives), Te Mata is a family-owned Estate in Hawke's Bay, on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island. Established in 1896 on a former pastoral land-holding, the Estate has been producing classic wines modelled on Bordeaux varieties and blends with a modern interpretation.
Coleraine is an assemblage of the finest wines from distinct plots within Te Mata Estate's oldest vineyards on the Havelock Hills. Each parcel of grapes was destemmed before a warm-plunged fermentation and extended maceration on skins. The resulting wines were then matured in predominantly new French oak barrels for 17 months. The final blend of this 2024 is 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc.

This is 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc. 55% new oak. This vintage puts me in mind of the mighty 2020; that sort of depth and concentration, though it has some of the acid cut of 2021 in the mix too. Winemaker Phil Brodie says 2024 was a dry vintage, and warm too, with small bunches and lower crop levels. Said it could have gone too ripe, but they walked through the vineyards on a daily basis, tasting and testing, and they picked it when they thought it was just right. When I think about NZ wine, at the top of the tree, I have Kumeu for Chardonnay, Bilancia for Shiraz (and sometimes Chardonnay!), and Te Mata for Cabernet. A trio of meticulous producers who regularly deliver that little bit extra. The one percenters, if you like.
Deep dark wine, black and red fruit, chocolate and ironstone, some creamy and spicy cedar oak, dried flowers, a light minty perfume, slight roasted red capsicum and pimento. It’s medium to full-bodied, crisp ‘mineral’ acidity, lavish graphite tannin, tobacco and nori, a fresh blackberry nip to it, brooding and ferrous, with a firm and savoury finish of superb length. An exceptional wine. It will keep, probably, for as long as you want to keep it, if you can keep your hands off it, that is. Drink 2028-2049+.

Alain Graillot has proved beyond a doubt that it is possible to make rich wines from the gently sloped alluvial plain where the Isère River meets the Rhone. His concentrated reds demonstrate all that is exciting about the Syrah grape: black fruit, intense aromaticity, pepper and spice complexity underpinned by crisp acidity and fine tannins.
Graillot works organically, harvesting fruit by hand and fermenting in whole bunches. He chooses to age his wines in used barrels, one to three-years-old, purchased from Burgundy’s best estates. His Crozes-Hermitage is difficult to resist young. Despite the tannins that inevitably come from the inclusion of whole bunches in fermentation, Graillot wines are seldom hard-edged, overly tannic, or in need of extended cellaring. In fact, they are often flat-out delicious very soon after release. That being said, their track record for rewarding patient cellaring is exemplary.

Brilliant pale straw colour with glimpses of green around the edges and a watery hue. Delightful pear and lime scents greet the nostrils followed by hints of green apple, fresh herbs and wet stone. Carrying a river stone like textural feel across the palate are delicious pear, lime and green apple fruits. Excellent intensity with notions of wet stone, infusions of fresh herbs and minerals the undercard. Crisp acidity lending energy to the long, nicely shaped, mineral laden finish.

Doused with lashings of black fruit, this is a power packed, opulent and dense Barossa Shiraz.
Selected from a single block high on the estate peak, where the soils are shallow and exposure to sunlight is long, the Beast embodies all the classic Barossa attributes of power, concentration, richness and structure. Maturation took place in French oak (60% new and 40% seasoned) for a period of 22 months.
Magnificent colour saturation featuring an impenetrable inky black heart and a near equally deep dark red black hue. Potent ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark plum scents soar out of the glass followed by some spicy vanillin cedar, mocha, earth and subtle peppered fennel notes. Rich, densely concentrated and opulent yet possessing an underlying freshness, the weighty palate is coated with lavish dark plum, liquorice and blackberry fruits. Spicy vanillin cedar, subtle earthy mocha and peppered fennel elements are also evident. Velvety yet structurally sturdy tannins. Power packed it finishes exceptionally long and sumptuous.

One of five bottlings in the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, the 2018 Handy was matured for six years and four months in 73 hand picked barrels, then bottled uncut and unfiltered.
Other reviews.... Cereal grain notes and fresh-cut oak suggest some youthfulness here, but the stone fruits and hot caramel sundae appear dense and richly layered. On the palate the big, up-front sweetness evolves into nougat, marzipan, and caramel-covered apple, sprinkled with root beer spices, before more grain and pastry notes appear on the finish. Powerful and vibrant stuff.

The Swinney family has been farming their 3,000-hectare "Franklands" property since 1922, but it was the transition to viticulture in the late 1990s that established them as one of the most significant fruit sources in Western Australia. Under the guidance of fourth-generation siblings Matt and Janelle Swinney and acclaimed winemaker Rob Mann, the estate has shifted from being a prestigious grower for others to a benchmark producer in its own right. The Farvie range represents the pinnacle of their holdings, sourced exclusively from small, ironstone-rich pockets of the vineyard where bush-vine architecture and meticulous dry-farming are used to capture the singular, ferrous personality of the Frankland River.
Farvie Grenache is sourced from a specific northeast-facing crest of the Wilson's Pool Vineyard, produced from established, dry-grown bush vines where the fruit was hand-selected over multiple passes to ensure optimal ripeness. It was fermented with 60% whole bunches and aged for 11 months in large, fine-grained French oak, resulting in a 13.9% alcohol profile defined by ferrous complexity and velvety tannins.

Wine critics are completely unbiased and have absolutely no favourites at all. First line of the wine writers’ creed. Unfortunately, despite our best intentions, it really isn’t true. There are always some samples which, when they arrive for tasting, bring a smile of anticipated pleasure. Even though Swinney have only been on the scene for the equivalent of a drop in the vinous ocean, they have established a reputation as one of the most exciting producers in the country. The latest releases will simply entrench this even further. With all the attention focused on Grenache from the warmer South Australian regions, it may seem odd that one of our very best hails from the far distant Frankland River. This is a single vineyard wine from the Wilson’s Pool Vineyard, picked from dry grown, bush vines. Winemaker, Robert Mann, includes 60% whole bunches in the ferment. The wine spent ten days on skins before pressing to large format, older French oak, where it spent eleven months maturing. A gleaming crimson/ruby hue, the complexity in this wine is immediately evident. The aromas weave through notes of cherries, warm earth, mulberries, fresh beetroot, kirsch, truffles, plums and a touch of florals and orange rind. There is an appealing savouriness here, but giving the wine time in the glass will be to its advantage. Supple and seamless, there is a fine line of acidity maintained throughout and great length here. This will provide pleasure for the next ten to fifteen years at least. One of our great Grenaches. The 2024 Farvie Grenache is fragrant and perfumed, redolent of rose petals and raspberry seed, rhubarb and a hint of licorice. The palate is structural and quite delicate; it is ashy, mineral and spicy, with a very fine spool of flavor across the palate. Initially, the acidity and tannins in this wine displayed as firm (fine but firm), however, the wine then opened up tremendously and will continue to do so over the next day, and with that opening comes a relaxing of all the components. This is a gorgeous wine, one that should reset your expectations about this vintage—a reaffirmation of the truism that you must follow "producer, producer, producer." This is an excellent wine from an excellent vineyard and producer. 13.9% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2039.

Quite rosy and musky, paprika and mint, red fruits and toasted hazelnuts. It’s medium-bodied, a little sappy and nutty, a light grainy grip to tannin, has some blood orange tang in the mix, poached strawberry, quite minty and green herby, but not in a bad way. The finish has some malty characters in with strawberry and cranberry freshness, offering good length, closing with somewhat drying tannin. Lots of character. Perhaps a little too thickset, is a quibble. Drink 2026-2032.

Aromas have that distinctive ironstone character, which is regional and vineyard. The palate is quite tight and firmish, but there is good flesh in there. The higher acidity contributed to that tight palate sensation. In this case, a higher percentage of whole bunches to capture the freshness in the wine. Almost has a sour cherry-like character with a ferrous wet slaty character. More assertive structural tannins. The only thing different in the winery was the use of whole bunches, which was up to 65% in this case. The berry sizes were quite small and loose, so you get the brightness and concentration. It is a stunning wine that continues to define Australian grenache. Cellar 30 years.

The wine underwent 14 days on skins before maturing for 11 months in seasoned, large-format French oak, capturing the variety's most wild and emotive structural character.

This is not simply one of the best examples of Mourvèdre from Australia, it’s one of the best in the world. Cracking stuff. From the Frankland River region, the fruit is entirely from the Wilson’s Pool Vineyard. These are dry grown, bush vines. The fruit is hand-picked and the team use 100% whole bunches in the fermentation. The wine spends two weeks on skins before maturing for eleven months in large format, older French oak. Deep maroon hue, the nose reveals notes of cassis, blackberries, plums, some fleshy notes, smoked meats, chocolate, dried herbs and a touch of fruitcake. There is a silky texture through to satiny tannins along with very good length. A supple style, this is nicely balanced and the oak has been deftly handled. A fifteen-to-twenty-five-year proposition. Drink 2026-2046.

The 2024 Farvie Mourvèdre is ultra-aromatic from the glass. The fruit sits on the red-purple mulberry and raspberry end of the spectrum, while the tannins are spicy, dusty and profuse in the mouth. The spices err on the side of exoticism, with paprika dolce, pink peppercorn, nutmeg, campfire ash and something akin to persimmon. This is a beautiful wine; it is beguiling, intriguing and highly attractive. While this is a more restrained, tannic iteration than what we saw in 2023, it is defined by its tannic structure and medium-bodied fruit. It's a beauty. 13.6% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2039.

It’s expressive aromatically and it is in a pure way: it’s not floral, the fruit itself is ebullient. From there it’s one of the more seamless wines that you will encounter, in that the flavour notes all more or less meld as one. This wine presents the united colours of Mourvèdre. A bag of roasted nuts, fresh red and black cherries, leather, mint and almond paste characters all get a run, I guess, though I feel dirty trying to dissect such harmony. This is a wine of emphasis but it’s not a wine of density; it’s medium in weight if not lighter, though its general impact is significant. Tannin. I’ve been meaning to mention tannin. This is one of those wines where the tannin framework has no right to be so good. Drinking this wine is like staring at a large spider’s web, glistening with dew, and marvelling at its intricacy. It’s just bloody ridiculously good – as is the wine in its entirety. Drink 2026-2034+.

The colour is deeper and richer than the grenache. Loads of punchy dark fruit characters, with that distinctive ironstone character which is evident in the grenache but not to the same extent. There’s an earthy gamey meat charcuterie character on the nose. The palate has a deep intensity. It’s a structured wine showing the firmness of the tannins. As it breathed, the seductive perfumed florals of this variety started to emerge. When I tasted it the next day, they were even more profound, suggesting great things ahead. Another example of how Farvie is pushing this Rhone variety into rarefied air among the world’s best. Cellar 30 years.

Farvie Syrah is a blend of dry-grown fruit from the Powderbark and Wilson Pool sites, this Syrah was fermented with 67% whole bunches to foster a savoury, ironstone personality without the influence of new oak. It spent 11 months on lees in large-format barrels, emphasizing floral perfume and a refined, mineral-driven structure rather than richness or weight.

Syrah, or Shiraz, from the Frankland River region has certainly established itself has one of the most exciting styles of the grape in the country. This release is from the Powderbark Vineyard (66%) and Wilson’s Pool (34%). The fruit is hand-picked and fed to a French oak vat, and two demi-muids. The team use 67% whole bunches in the ferment. The wine spends ten days on skins and eleven months maturing in large format, older French oak. The colour is a vibrant purple magenta. On the nose we have notes of leather and truffles, animal hides, charcuterie, black fruits, beef stock, soy, hints of florals and a touch of blackcurrants. There is real power here, but everything is in balance. Good intensity throughout with juicy acidity and abundant, fine, powdery tannins. A wine which will easily see out the next fifteen to twenty years. Drink 2026-2046.

The darkest of the three Farvie wines released in this vintage, the 2024 Farvie Syrah leads with a nose populated by dark fruit and spices to match. There are notes of blackberry, blueberry, mulberry and blood plum, alongside licorice dark chocolate and tapenade. The tannins here make a show on the palate, with a gravelly undercurrent of texture that speaks clearly of the season but more eloquently of the site. The gravelly ironstone soils are echoed in the wine, and it is this synchronicity that makes these wines so special. It's a black, graphite, cooling expression of Syrah in this vintage. There are notes of pressed flowers, too. 13.8% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2039.

This is bold, grunty and svelte at once. To borrow a phrase: it’s Frankland River Grange. It’s pounded with tannin, dark berried, creamy to the touch and inflected with mint, bitumen, violets, iodine and red earth. As ‘much’ as it is on the palate, the follow through of the finish is exceptional. It was a dry old creek before blood and plums started charging through it. That’s the vibe here. Salt of the earth, as a drink. Aussie bush and Aussie berries, soft and extracted, dry and elongated. Drink 2028-2036+.

The combination of different blocks adds to its deep complexity, with the dark spicy fruit of one block and the blue fruit perfumes of the other. Delve deeper, and then an earthy gamey nori-like character starts spiralling out. There’s plenty of plummy palate coating fruit, which continues to its palate feel and rich opulence. Seamlessly structured with firm tannins and that understated integrated oak working seamlessly within the core of concentrated fruit. Cellar 30 years.

Dense midnight black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Flowing through the nostrils with splendid intensity is an attractive wave of blackcurrant, liquorice and mulberry scents which are complimented by spicy vanillin cedar, tobacco, earthy black olive and subtle choc mint notes. Rich and concentrated yet refined, generous blackcurrant and liquorice fruits flood the mouth supported by a spicy vanillin cedar, ripe mulberry, subtle tobacco, earth and bay leaf background. Polished and silky it has an exquisitely fine tannin structure and long deeply fruited finish.

The first thing you note is the color. It’s deep and opaque. And then the nose displays all you expect from those blackcurrant and dark berry characters of Coonawarra, but with that fine leafy lift that brings a regionality to it. The palate is both structured and yet elegantly defined, with a firm thread of fine limestone-like characters, of the tannins neatly sitting with the integration of fine oak. This is a wine that’s built for extended cellaring, and yet its balance is so supreme that it can be enjoyed right now. Super wine. Drink 2025-2045.

Rich and juicy with slightly muscular tannins and a savoury, blackpepper infused conclusion.
The 'Eadie' is made from fruit grown on the Eadie's Block paddock, located on the southern side of Jackson's Creek. Its named after the family who first planted vines on the spot in 1863 - the Ben Eadie's. The Vineyard was re-planted in 1993 and is made using all the same techniques as the iconic Shiraz from the original old block.
Midnight black heart with a dark red black tinged hue. Blackpepper infused aromas of red to dark plum and liquorice intermix with smoked meats, earthy leather and spicy clove like notes. Rich, juicy red plum and liquorice fruits make a plush entrance with notions of smoked meats, clove and peppered earth outlined across the back half. Slightly muscular tannins lend a sense of firmness onto the savoury, blackpepper infused conclusion.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

The Eadie is a single plot wines that is made from fruit located on the southern side of Jacksons Creek in the vineyard of Craiglee, and is named for the family who first planted vines there in 1863. What a thing.
A lush and plush expression, somewhat outside the norm of the Craiglee precision, a touch more volume but all the control and charm expected of top flight shiraz from here. Depth is a thing here, so too a velvety feel, rich, ripe plum, a liqueur cassis note that flows through and then lifts with green olive, violet florals, a touch of sweet spice, dried Italian herbs, faint game meat notes, some cedar and clove in there too. A lot on. Really good. Just so, rich but refreshing, and a full experience. So unique. Drink 2026-2038+
