2023 Samuel Billaud Les Preuses Chablis Grand Cru

While the origins of this domaine date back to Charles-Louis-Noel Billaud in 1815, it's the current generation winemaker Samuel Billaud that has made waves with the exceptional quality of his wines produced since the creation of this project in 2009. Following the sale of the family business Domaine Billaud-Simon to Faiveley in 2014, Samuel received further prized parcels of land and now makes wines from five of the grand cru vineyards, and five of the top premier cru vineyards. The wines are vinified in a mixture of stainless steel and large old wood barrels, the latter mainly for the premier and grand cru wines.

Utterly ethereal, the 2023 Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses bursts with marine-inflected aromas of oyster juice, wet stones, lemon peel, nectarine and white flowers. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, incisive and vibrant, with a layered core driven by racy acidity and culminating in a long, lemon-scented finish. Drink 2028-2045.

The 2023 Chablis Les Preuses Grand Cru comes from 60-year-old vines that were cropped at around 45 hl/ha. This leans slightly more toward the tropical side of the fruit spectrum, although the mineralité still floods through. The palate is well balanced with a keen thread of acidity and a patina of new oak that's cohesive with the fruit. This is edgy and surfeit with energy on the finish. The 2023 is excellent. Drink 2027-2048.

All made in barrel for the first year's elevage. A fresh lemon-yellow colour with great energy on the nose, despite the evident intensity this Preuses has elegance purity and distinction. Like those who are so beautifully yet simply dressed that you know it must cost a great deal of money. Immaculate. Drink from 2028-2035.
