2023 Samuel Billaud Bougros Chablis Grand Cru

While the origins of this domaine date back to Charles-Louis-Noel Billaud in 1815, it's the current generation winemaker Samuel Billaud that has made waves with the exceptional quality of his wines produced since the creation of this project in 2009. Following the sale of the family business Domaine Billaud-Simon to Faiveley in 2014, Samuel received further prized parcels of land and now makes wines from five of the grand cru vineyards, and five of the top premier cru vineyards. The wines are vinified in a mixture of stainless steel and large old wood barrels, the latter mainly for the premier and grand cru wines.

The 2023 Chablis Grand Cru Les Bougros wafts from the glass with aromas of orange peel, nutmeg, peach, pear, freshly baked bread and spice. Full-bodied, broad and textural, it possesses a rich core of fruit underpinned by tangy acidity and concludes with a long, saline finish. A site capable of yielding powerful wines, Billaud’s Bougros emerges as a notably harmonious expression. Drink 2028-2042.

The 2023 Chablis Bougros Grand Cru, which comes from a mid-slope parcel, matured in barrel for 12 months plus 6 months in tank. It has a complex nose that blossoms in the glass, with crushed limestone infusing the yellow plum and subtle orange pith scents. This is razor-sharp in terms of definition. The palate is very well balanced, harmonious and poised, with a fine bead of acidity, gentle grip and a touch of stem ginger on the finish. This is very classy and surely one to cellar for the long term. Drink 2027-2050.

Vinified and aged for 50% barrel, 50% tank for 12 months, then 6 months assembled in tank. Mid lemon colour, with a spicy, heady bouquet. Expands on the palate, the spices becoming more evident, and a gourmand quality, possibly even a touch of heat. This will need time. Drink from 2028-2035.
