While the origins of this domaine date back to Charles-Louis-Noel Billaud in 1815, it's the current generation winemaker Samuel Billaud that has made waves with the exceptional quality of his wines produced since the creation of this project in 2009. Following the sale of the family business Domaine Billaud-Simon to Faiveley in 2014, Samuel received further prized parcels of land and now makes wines from five of the grand cru vineyards, and five of the top premier cru vineyards. The wines are vinified in a mixture of stainless steel and large old wood barrels, the latter mainly for the premier and grand cru wines.

Other Reviews...
As usual, Samuel Billaud's 2023 Bourgogne d'Or Chardonnay is a blend of purchased musts from Mâconnais and Auxerrois and was aged on the lees in the tank for 12 months. Offering aromas of beeswax, pear and honeysuckle, it’s medium-bodied, broad and charming but lacks the incisive spine of acidity found in his Chablis bottlings. Drink 2025-2031.

The 2023 Bourgogne d’Or comes half from Mâcon-Lugny and half from Auxerrois. It has a simple, bright sunny bouquet with melon and grapefruit scents. The palate is fresh and taut, lightly waxed in texture with a brisk finish. Fine. Drink 2024-2028.

Just bottled. Half from the Mâconnais and half Auxerrois. Clear pale colour. Fresh and juicy, not heated, very appetising. Plenty of bright ripe apple energy, a bit of warmth behind, yet finishes compact rather than too juicy. Drink from 2025-2027.
