2023 Samuel Billaud Vaudesir Chablis Grand Cru

While the origins of this domaine date back to Charles-Louis-Noel Billaud in 1815, it's the current generation winemaker Samuel Billaud that has made waves with the exceptional quality of his wines produced since the creation of this project in 2009. Following the sale of the family business Domaine Billaud-Simon to Faiveley in 2014, Samuel received further prized parcels of land and now makes wines from five of the grand cru vineyards, and five of the top premier cru vineyards. The wines are vinified in a mixture of stainless steel and large old wood barrels, the latter mainly for the premier and grand cru wines.

Billaud’s 2023 Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir is a superb wine, unwinding in the glass with aromas of orange peel, pear, apricot and oyster juice. Full-bodied, ample and enveloping, it seamlessly marries tension with concentration, finishing long and intensely. A seamless wine of notable potential, it will amply reward readers with the patience and means to lay it down for a decade or more. Drink 2029-2045.

The 2023 Chablis Vaudésir Grand Cru comes from two parcels on the east and west sides of the vineyard. This is very pure on the nose, with yellow fruit, crushed limestone and hints of blood orange. It's tensile and bursting with energy. The palate is very well balanced, with a sapid entry. This is a strongly marine-influenced Vaudésir, gently fanning out toward the intense finish. The 2023 is stupendously fine. Drink 2028-2052.

Made from 35-40 years old vines. A stunning bouquet, ripe lemons and limes, high class apple, a perfectly balanced ripeness, almost a floral perfume but avoiding any of the over sunny notes. Excellent energy. Really a stunning balance on the palate, I don’t see how you could do better. Such a cool white fruit. Drink from 2028-2035.
