2023 Samuel Billaud Blanchot Chablis Grand Cru

While the origins of this domaine date back to Charles-Louis-Noel Billaud in 1815, it's the current generation winemaker Samuel Billaud that has made waves with the exceptional quality of his wines produced since the creation of this project in 2009. Following the sale of the family business Domaine Billaud-Simon to Faiveley in 2014, Samuel received further prized parcels of land and now makes wines from five of the grand cru vineyards, and five of the top premier cru vineyards. The wines are vinified in a mixture of stainless steel and large old wood barrels, the latter mainly for the premier and grand cru wines.

The recently bottled 2023 Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot offers a flamboyant bouquet of gooseberry, lime, grapefruit and lychee, complemented by a hint of vanilla pod. Full-bodied, elegant and layered, it displays a crisp core of fruit framed by racy acids, concluding with a mouthwatering, saline finish. Save for Les Preuses, it is the least powerful among Billaud’s grand cru bottlings. Drink 2028-2045.

The 2023 Chablis Blanchot Grand Cru comes from the mid-slope parcel. This aged like the Bougros except the barrels are two instead of three years old. Surprisingly, that makes a tangible difference on the nose, where you can feel the vanillary patina of new oak. The palate is very well balanced with superb depth. That touch of new oak perhaps just masks some of the terroir expression on the finish. Give it three or four years. Drink 2028-2048.

All made in Chassin barrels for one year. Very pale in colour, notably oaky nose. I have suggested he goes to wine globe for this wine. Even in the mouth the wood marks this too much. The fruit will pull through but this isn’t classic Samuel. Drink from 2028-2035.
