2024 Torbreck The Steading BlancBarossa Valley, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$37. 99Bottle$455.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 2 Years (2026-2028)ABV: 13.5%Closure: StelvinA luscious, slippery textured blend of Roussanne, Marsanne and Viognier.
Inspired by the rich, luscious and mineral scented dry whites of the Rhône Valley, The Steading Blanc is sourced entirely from the Descendant Vineyard on Roennfeldt Road first planted in 1994. The ripe, fleshy, barrel fermented Viognier and Marsanne gives the palate a textural edge whilst the Roussanne contributes it’s more flinty and austere personality.
A blend of 53% Roussanne, 45% Marsanne and 2% Viognier. Brilliant water like core with green highlighted surrounds. Drifting from the glass are aromas of peach and apricot followed by some waxy honey dew melon like notes and hints of ginger. Luscious, slippery textured flavours of peach, apricot and red apple slide across the palate with subtle notions of honey dew melon, ginger and spicy honeysuckle the undercard. Fresh acidity with a long, graceful yet supplely shaped finish.
Drink over the next 1-2 years.

Layers of honeysuckle, lemon myrtle, sliced pears, beeswax and stone fruit on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with a chewy phenolic edge and a generous texture, giving flavors of nectarines, white flowers, grapefruit pith and green apples. A blend of 53% roussanne, 45% marsanne and 2% viognier fermented in a mix of stainless steel and barrels. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

JamesSuckling.comThe 2024 The Steading Blanc is a composition of Roussanne (63%), Marsanne (28%), and Viognier (9%), and the wine is equal parts floral, chalky phenolics and preserved citrus fruits. It has a burst of fresh saline acidity in the mouth, and the wine seems a perfect fit for the soils of the Barossa. The fruit is from the Descendant vineyard on Roennfeldt Road, first planted in 1994. This is very good. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2032.

Erin Larkin – Robert Parker’s The Wine AdvocateThe 2024 The Steading Blanc is a well-controlled expression. The natural exuberance of these varieties is restrained here to provide focus. Exotic melon and grapefruit aromas are lifted by acacia and old oak. Juicy acidity then delivers a linear texture accented by pithy, phenolic grip before finishing long and fine. Drink 2026-2032.

2016 Ardnamurchan Single Cask No:456 9 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Australian ExclusiveHighlands, SCOTLAND$199. 99Bottle$2399.88 DozenABV: 58.5%348 bottles from a first-fill Spanish oak Oloroso Hogshead make up this unpeated Ardna'. Drawing parallels with their annual classic finished in Paul Launois Champagne casks, there's no smoke to hide behind, so the quality of the distillate is more on show. The similarities end there. The sherry input makes this significantly heavier on the nose and thicker on the palate; Oloroso glazing the tongue before a muted coastal character blends with dried figs, bittersweet dark chocolate and gingery warmth. A touch of minerality is retained, too, as the finish dries and closes leaving mere traces of the whisky's provenance. Because it's a single cask, the presentation returns to Ardnamurchan’s original slate blue vessel - emulating the colour of the volcanic rock that surrounds their peninsula. A few hundred bottles remain for the entire Australian market, which may add further appeal for collectors. 58.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Tasted from a 30ml sample.

Balvenie Single Barrel 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $179.99$159. 99Bottle$1919.88 DozenABV: 47.8%Launched in 2013, Balvenie's Single Barrel offerings are limited editions, with no more than 300 drawn from a single cask, hand-numbered and labelled with the cask number. This release was matured in first-fill bourbon casks for at least 12 years before bottling non-chill filtered.
2014 batch tasted... Perfect clarity in the bright gold appearance. Wavers before attractive scents of apple strudel, poached pear in wine and hints of cinnamon are released. Further exposure subdues the overall intensity but accents mild fruit cake notes, dilute honey and hints of ginger biscuit. The big wood influence and higher ABV delivers more punch than you'd expect from Balvenie with honey, vanilla and barley sugar featuring in a medium to full bodied profile and showing terrific balance through to the vibrant, spicy, subtle charry oak / wafer biscuit fade. Like the superb peated release tasted earlier, this marks a departure from the house style, taking a more heavy handed approach to what is generally a delicate spirit. It will find favour amongst those who generally prefer the bolder Speyside malts, like Benromach or Glenfarclas. Great value while this price holds.47.8% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... I believe these are all first fill. I doubt different casks will be very different, it's probably all under control. Colour: white wine. Nose: fresh and citric at first, chalky and lemony, with touches of fresh oak (not totally dry) and just cut grass. A little iron too. It's very tight, with growing notes of paraffin and fresh cement, then green apples and a wee menthol/camphor combination. Refreshing altogether. Mouth: really very good. Lemon sherbet, tight grasses, the greenest green apples and the greenest limes, then perhaps mirabelles and damsons, but it'll never get as mellow and rounded as some other casks that I had tried earlier. Finish: long and sweeter, more on jellybeans, then just a lot of grass. Perhaps a little too much sourness in the aftertaste, sour fruits… Comments: it's remarkable that it never got vanilla-driven given that this was first fill. 85 points - whiskyfun.com

The Scarlet project focuses on "Japanese Amaro," utilizing over 30 botanicals, many estate-grown without pesticides or sourced from local farmers, to create spirits that reflect Japanese terroir. Every step, from harvesting and maceration to hand-labeling and bottling, is performed without automation to preserve the structural integrity and natural sediment of the raw ingredients.
This vibrant green (Verde) amaro is built on a unique base of mugwort spirit and infused with 41 different botanicals. At 32% ABV, it is the most potent and concentrated entry in the lineup. Because of its intense herbal punch, featuring fresh wormwood, fennel, and bergamot, it's exceptionally effective when used in small amounts to add layers of cooling, herbal complexity to a cocktail, or enjoyed neat as a traditional after-dinner digestive.
Please note: Scarlet products are minimally filtered to preserve the raw botanical character of their ingredients, resulting in a natural, flavor-rich sediment unique to every hand-bottled batch.

The internet is full of praise regarding Signatory's 100 Proof bottlings, a series that continues to put many other independents to shame. Here's a cracking value from a sought-after name in single malt that's rarely encountered: Mortlach, matured in second-fill oloroso butts - an exercise in restraint from Signatory that sees the sherry input balanced instead of prevailing, meaning the meaty and textural qualities that make Mortlach what it is are nicely expressed. Apparently it 'swims' well too, so you can extend the value with a splash of water to open up the flavours. Well done Signatory, keep them coming! 57.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... "A very lovely and a young Mortlach. The wood is not too dormant on this one, so gives a good impression of the distillery character of the beast of Dufftown - fruity, malty, salty and meaty." - whiskybase.com
"Good Mortlach, the refill oloroso is secondary as it should be. A hint of sulfur and almost a touch of mezcal but otherwise the depth and nominal meatiness familiar to Mortlach drinkers, Excellent value for money." - whiskybase.com
... Full bodied and mouth-coating. Sweet and spicy with rich, creamy depth. Orchard fruits and dried fruits dominate, with green herbs quietly in the background. Finish: Medium to long. Continues in the same rich style, now with a hint of chocolate. Gradually turning greener toward the end. Comment: Quirky nose, rich fruity palate. - whiskysaga.com

Glengyle Distillery Kilkerran Heavily Peated Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Batch 13Campbeltown, SCOTLAND$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 58.6%Yes, it’s that time again. Brought to market twice a year at natural strength, Glengyle's Heavily Peated 2025 release continues the trend of using high-quality bourbon casks (90%) to provide a creamy, sweet base for Kilkerran's earthy peat smoke. The remainder comes out of sherry casks with the barley peated to around 45 ppm. It's reported that the distillery is pretty happy with this formula and has settled on it going forward. Those who've tasted it generally agree that the combination hits the mark (yet again), being at least as good or better than most previous batches. On allocation in Australia. Stocks are not expected to last long. 58.6% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... We were rather fond of Batch 12, also released this year (WF 87) Colour: pale gold. Nose: seriously powerful at first, brushing up against cologne, then slowly the candied lemons, oysters and iodine tincture take over, bringing a piercing, clean sharpness to the whole. With water: seawater, seaweed, plaster and beach sand at low tide. Mouth (neat): perfect, farmy, very lemony, with surprising notes of Toplexil, green pepper and salt. In the end, it’s all about purity. With water: really excellent, almost like pure oyster juice, just missing a few drops of Muscadet. Finish: very long, very vertical, salty, peppery and lemony to the point of excess, but we’re all for that. Slightly youthful on the aftertaste, with green pear and a touch of rubber. Comments: still just as good and properly peaty. We now await batch #14, likely due next year. 87 points - whiskyfun.com
...Heavy smoky peat, associated with distillate which is peppery, lemony, and long aftertaste. Quite different than batch 12, which has been open awhile and may have changed. Batch 12 doesn't seem as heavily peated. I like this better, although just opened, mainly because the distillate has better flavors. - whiskybase.com
Notes from the producers... Nose: Creamy butterscotch and notes of banana fritters and elderflower kick off this heavily peated dram. Palate: The peat smoke on the palate is complemented by notes of honeydew melon and Iberico ham. Finish:The smoke continues in the finish along with notes of verbena and honeycomb.

Figs, cinnamon, and pineapple up front on the nose; in time, smoky fudge. The palate is rich and creamy, with more fudge, honey, and tangerines. The orange note becomes more bitter, accompanied by lively spices and subtle woodsmoke. Long in the finish, with peppery oak. 89 points - whiskyadvocate.com
Nutty, malty and displaying a cocoa tendency. 86 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2025-26
Always an incredible value, it’s nice to see Speyburn continuing to move its way toward older and older bottlings. (Old Speyburn can be quite lovely.) This expression eschews parlor tricks and goes with a straightforward aging regimen: It’s matured in both bourbon and sherry casks for 18 years, though the proportion of each is not disclosed. Let’s dive in. The nose here is classic, sherried Speyside: Malty and rich, nutty, with ample sherry giving it a spicy, citrus peel kick. Notes of camphor and eucalyptus provide a nostril-clearing punch, with just a ton of spice coming on after those more pungent notes blow off. The palate largely follows suit. There’s plenty of sherry here; on first blush it feels like it could well be a Macallan bottling. Ample notes of orange peel and lemon peel dominate on the tongue, with a malty, ruddy character smoldering beneath. A drop of water is a nice touch, helping notes of walnut, nutmeg, red wine to percolate — but the finish belongs to the wood-heavy sherry character. Sherry fans: Run, don’t walk, to pick up this rare 18 year old... - drinkhacker.com

2025 Best’s Great Western Foudre Ferment RieslingGreat Western, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$34. 99Bottle$419.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 6 Years (2026-2032)ABV: 11%Closure: StelvinA savoury oak matured Riesling that carries a pulpy feel.
This wine is reflective of the way Riesling was made at Best’s in the 1970s and earlier. The aromatic Riesling juice is given extended skin contact then wild fermented in large French oak foudre (barrels). The wine exhibits both the complexities of a barrel ferment and spontaneous fermentation without the overt oak flavour, due to the large size and subtlety of the Foudre.
Brilliant very pale straw almost water like core with green tinged edges. Pear, green to red apple skin and lime scents leap out of the glass followed by some subtle quince, gentle honeysuckle and wet stone notes. Pulpy textural feel with lime, green apple skin and green pear fruits meld into a refreshing back drop of delicate nectarine, mandarin and flinty mineral characters. Crisp acidity with along flinty mineral infused finish.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.
Alc. 11%
Other Reviews……
Left on skins for 24 hours, pressed and racked to two large oak casks, barrel fermentation, left on lees for five months. A wine that says 'not only is it okay to place riesling in oak, but it can open up a wonderful world of flavour and texture'. Aromatic honeysuckle florals and exotic ginger and lemongrass aromas mingle with citrus, pear and apple. Builds on the palate oh-so delicately but deeply with a warm textural mouthfeel. Oak contributes to the umami and a leesy almond mealy-ness, while the purity of riesling fruit shines brightly. A stunner from a top vintage. Drink by 2037.

Kilchoman Coull Point Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLAND$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 46%Despite being released back in 2024, Coull Point will be unknown to most Kilchoman fans. It was originally exclusive to World of Whiskies (UK Travel Retail). The limited edition sees a vatting of four and five-year-old fresh bourbon barrels, partially finished in oloroso sherry butts, resulting in a young, relatively light and easy-drinking Kilchoman, not as phenolic or in your face as a Sanaig, for example, but still boasting classic peat and bourbon notes with a pleasing complexity that evolves over time. The name 'Coull Point' refers to a rugged headland a few miles north of the distillery, which is also featured on the packaging. 46% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.
Other reviews... This strikes me as being the most overtly smoky of Kilchoman's recent bottlings, and also the sweetest. Intense and very forward, there's baked apple, humidor notes, honeydew melon, fresh shellfish. Water brings out a putty-like youthfulness, so take it neat. The palate is amazingly sweet (think golden syrup), then the smoke folds itself over. A good—and well-priced—introduction for newcomers. 87 points - whiskyadvocate, com
...Peat can be useful to hide dubious spirit and/or casks to improve the overall presentation. This however is peated Kilchoman and dubious it ain’t. What we have here is a quality, young, precocious, peated artisan presentation with a sublime and restrained peat level, an amount that complements the spirit without swamping it. There is some heat that builds on the palate right to the end but water does help, In the words of Cat Stevens’ ‘Father and Son' - ‘You're still young, that's your fault….’ - so all you can do is present yourself in the best way possible - and thats whats happening here. For me its one of Kilchoman’s most successful presentations to date and one i’d purchase if it wasn’t for some splendid young, peated Bunna’s coming out right now. Other reviews... Why you would do a finish on such a whisky, I don't quite know. Not happy with the make? Something that went wrong with the peated malt? Too immature? Bah anyway, it's just an NAS at 40% vol., so stakes should be low anyway. Colour: gold. Nose: nice, in fact, with tobacco and autumn leaves, walnuts, some hay, touches of mustard, cassis leaves, cigarettes, and something akin to… Laphroaig Lore (with apologies both to AnCnoc and Laphroaig). Mouth: light and rather thin, sooty, peppery and pretty ashy. Green walnuts and a little salt, plus rather a lot of oversteeped black tea. Little depth and not much oomph., but as they say, it does go down effortlessly. Finish: short, ashy. More black tea and more walnuts. Almost no aftertaste. 1999 Edradour 200th Anniversary 25 Year Old Madeira Cask #901 Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$699. 00Bottle$8388.00 DozenABV: 55%Similar to sherry maturations in Spanish oak, finishing whiskies in Portuguese Madeira casks invariably succeeds. However, we believe this edition was full-term matured for 25 years! It's one of a pair of hogsheads for Edradour's 200th Anniversary series that would make a fascinating side by side tasting. All those lovely fortified wine notes should be nicely captured, with one reviewer at whiskybase.com describing it as, "A fascinating and very tasty whisky that is both balanced and complex... Immediately present, full-bodied, very soft, creamy, fudge, balanced sweetness and acidity, spicy honey, shortbread, sweet raisins..." 287 bottles are on offer. 55% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
