2021 Catena Zapata Nicasia Vineyard Malbec
Refined and richly fruited with a compact structure and long, highly finessed finish.
Nicola Catena planted his first Malbec vineyard in Mendoza in 1902 and today the estate is run by Nicholás Catena and his daughter Laura. Malbec continues to be the estate's focus and the winery's pristine vineyards lie at the base of the Andes on soils of sand, lime and stone at altitudes between 920 and 1120 metres above sea level. Over the last 20 years, the fastidious vineyard work of Nicholas and Laura has paid dividends and Catena Zapata is now one of Argentina's most famous estates.
Impenetrable inky black heart with a near equally deep dark red black hue. Spicy red currant, blueberry and dark cherry aromas infused with dried herbs are trailed by hints of vanillin cedar and earth. Rich blueberry, dark cherry, red liquorice and red currant fruits are layered across the palate with great refinement. Spicy vanillin cedar, dried herb and earth elements linger across the back half. A sculptured frame of gently chalky tannins provides great compact structure. Long, highly finessed finish tinged with some dusty earth characters.
Cellar 8-10 years.
Alc. 13.5%

The 2021 Malbec Nicasia Vineyard originates from a small plot nestled within Paraje Altamira, Uco Valley. It was aged up to 16 months in concrete vats and foudres and boasts a deep purple color. The complex nose unveils layers of crushed plums, blueberries, herbs, curry, lavender and graphite. Initially dry and plush, the palate transitions into a taut, chalky, overwhelming, and juicy texture, as if embodying structure and suppleness. This unique and flavorful Malbec offers a high-pitched intensity of flavor that lingers, showcasing a prolonged focus on the fruit. Drink 2025-2040.

A complex, layered malbec that shows a touch of white pepper and cigar box. Blackberries, chiles, chocolate and fine spices. Really juicy and compact, but nothing hefty. Quintessential flavors with dusty tannins that keep growing. Drink or hold.

The vineyard in question in the 2021 Malbec Nicasia Vineyard is nearly a century old, 3,593-feet high, and brimming in clay with limestone soils. Medium-bodied and moderately concentrated, it sees an elevage of 16-21 months in French oak, softening the tannins to a supple edginess supportive of the black fruit and earthy spice of the wine. Enjoy now through 2037.
