2023 Langmeil Orphan Bank Shiraz
A rich, plummy Barossa Shiraz with an amply powered, well fleshed finish.
Orphan Bank is testament to Langmeil’s commitment to preserving old and rare Barossa vineyards. Ten rows of Shiraz planted pre-1860 were saved from the developer’s bulldozer and replanted alongside the original Langmeil vineyard on the banks of the North Para River. Matured for 24 months in French oak hogsheads (25% new), fruit for the Orphan Bank is sourced from a variety of Barossa sub districts with the vines having an average age of 85+ years.
Pitch black heart with a deep dark purple black hue. Nosing offers up dark plum and liquorice aromas followed by vanillin oak, whiffs of dark chocolate, earth and spice. Rich dark plum, liquorice and blackberry fruits cast an opulent feel across the palate with spicy vanillin cedar, earth and traces of fennel lurking underneath. Polished fine grained tannins. Amply powered it has a long well fleshed finish.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.
Alc. 14.5%
Other Reviews…..
Deep red with a good tint of purple and charred oak and black fruit aromas, a hint of black olive. The wine is round and supple with good soft ripe tannins and attractive plum/cranberry flavour that lingers well, the aftertaste super satisfying. Succulent sweet fruit core—delicious, sumptuous shiraz.
