QuiQuiRiQui Madrecuishe Mezcal (700ml)Oaxaca, MEXICO$179. 99Bottle$2159.88 DozenABV: 47%The Madrecuishe agave is part of the Karwinskii family, which also includes agave Cuishe, Cirial, and Tobasiche. Harvested between 14-16 years old, it grows mostly in the drier climates of Oaxaca, and typically takes a tall, cylindrical form. Due to the agave's dense core and low water content, mezcal made from Madrecuishe typically has high minerality and freshness with vegetal and floral notes. QQRQ's Madrecuishe is made by Maestro Mezcalero Natalio Vazquez at his palenque in El Palmar. Agaves are sourced from both wild and semi-wild plantations in Sitio El Palmar, San Luis Amatlán and Miahuatlán. Semi-wild means that wild seeds are sowed in community or private fields and when transplanted, left to grow, as in the wild. True wild agaves are increasingly scarce and Symonds feels replanting wild seeds represents a more responsible way to enjoy these rarer types of agave. To this end QQRQ re-sow ten times as many seeds as agaves used in their Mezcals. Tasting note: Clear. Oily and dense with a briney / fruity / waxy / dried herb opening sniff. Drifts lazily from the glass. Air contact loses no definition or intensity adding hints of menthol tobacco, white pepper, char grilled pineapple and dried fruits. A medium sweet, light to medium bodied mezcal with Islay-esque flavours of grilled citrus, tyre tube, wood smoke and a brisk, minerally finish. Elegant and remarkably balanced. The bouquet is first class. 47% Alc./Vol. -

Luxardo Alkermes Liqueur (500ml)Padova, ITALY$54. 99Bottle$659.88 DozenABV: 27%A classic Luxardo recipe, Alkermes contains cinnamon, vanilla, cardamom, cloves, cochineal and rose water. Brilliant red in colour, its gently spicy and rich aroma is traditionally used to enhance puddings and other desserts. Sought after by Italian foodies looking for that 'authentic' touch. Tasting note: Eye catching, bright strawberry red. Very gently bittersweet with cherry juice, marzipan, herb and sweet spice aromas evident. Creamy texture shows little spirit backbone and is borderline cloying with a broad, flabby, middle weighted profile featuring marzipan, clove and vanilla flavours. Turns almost imperceptibly bitter to finish - not enough to redeem the mid palate stage which is simply overly confected. 27%Alc./Vol. - Passoa Passionfruit Liqueur (700ml)FRANCE$46. 99Bottle$563.88 DozenABV: 17%
The Passion fruit was first discovered in South America, during the colonisation by Spanish missionaries in the 1500s. They first noticed the amazing flowers of the fruit in the jungle. Nobody knows exactly why it became known as the Passion fruit. Was it because the crown-like flower reminded people of the thorn bush of Christ's Passion? Or because of its supposed qualities as an aphrodisiac?
Today in the heart of Cointreau country, near Angers in North West France, the Passion Fruit is being used to create an original liqueur - Passoã. Passoã was first launched in 1986 in the Benelux region and internationally in 1994. Today it is enjoyed worldwide and distributed in more than 42 markets. Passoã is the number 1 liqueur brand in Puerto-Rico, number two in the Netherlands, and number three in Belgium. This versatile liqueur is an exotic, light weight mixer primarily designed to be drunk with chilled tropical fruit juices. Try a Passoa Orange: One third Passoa with two thirds orange juice. Or an Exotic Passion:
3/10 Passoa
2/10 Vodka
1/10 Fraise des bois (Strawberry liqueur)
1/10 pineapple juice
3/10 grapefruit juice

Four Pillars Navy Strength Gin (700ml)Yarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 58.8%One of Australia's latest distilling ventures is located in the Yarra Valley and it's going gangbusters. Regular readers will remember the standard ABV release from several months back. This limited edition ups the ante in an extraordinary way. It's also recently being awarded a prestigious double gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. 92 gins were assessed this year, with only nine scoring the double gold award. Here's the distiller explaining how they pulled it off:
"After experimenting with some exclusive batches for the Gin Palace (a Melbournian Gin institution) we decided to add fresh Byron Bay finger limes to the distillation, along with our beautiful organic oranges. This means we undertake a frenzy of distilling when these beauties are in season, and release just one edition of the Navy Strength each year.
The finger limes highlight the Asian spices like coriander and star anise, and are complemented by the addition of fresh ginger. Finally, fresh turmeric adds a fresh but earthy quality.
The resulting gin has lifted aromatics of lime curd, pine needles, and fragrant spices with a vanilla character which pulls the spices together. The palate is intense - sweet and juicy - but it is still very clean. The turmeric has added weight and earthiness to the palate with a freshness not unlike dill or cucumber." - Notes sourced from Four PIllars.
Tasting note: Brilliant rainwater clear with a bright silvery blush. Sensational intensity with lifted lemon verbena / lime cough lozenge notes in the opening pass. Further air contact shifts the accent towards juniper and orange peel over suggestions of turmeric, dried curry leaf and white pepper. A crisp, dry, juniper focussed entry preludes a powerful yet poised, creamy textured mid-palate attack with juicy orange / lime zest and vibrant peppers. Finish features lemon meringue, lime gelato and a drying turmeric-like texture followed by a medley of citrus flavours, all carried by the lively spices in a finale that seemingly never ends. Super long and immensely satisfying. Best Aussie Gin to date? 58.8% Alc./Vol.

Glen Grant 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$199. 99Bottle$2399.88 DozenABV: 43%Jim Murray's Scotch Whisky of the Year for 2017, 2019 and 2020.
Introduced in 2016, and much sought after since it left Jim Murray drooling, awarding it Second Finest Whisky in the World, as well as his Scotch Whisky of the Year in his 2017 Whisky Bible. The praise continued in 2019 and 2020 with Murray again declaring Glen Grant 18 'Single Malt Scotch Whisky of the Year.'Given the age statement and price, at well under $200, it seems an incredible buy for such amazing liquid. Grab some before collector mania sets in.
Other reviews... The hardest decision to make here: full marks or not. Actually, no: an even harder decision is trying to work out the leading forces behind this extraordinary nose. This is so in tune and well balanced it is impossible to nail exactly what leads and which follows...The most crystalline, technically sublime Speysider I have tasted in a very long time...I didn't expect to find a better distillery bottled Glen Grant than their superlative 10-year-old. I was wrong...Another Glen Grant knocking on the door of perfection.

Bass & Flinders Distillery Ochre Fine Aged Brandy (700ml)Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$220. 00Bottle$2640.00 DozenABV: 45%A first of its kind in Australia, Ochre is double distilled in a copper Alembic still on the Mornington Peninsula from Victorian Chardonnay grapes. Maturation takes place in 330-litre and 110-litre French oak barrels have been previously used to store cognac for up to 25 years in France.
Bass & Flinders aspired to produce a world-class aged spirit when establishing their distillery in 2009. A spirit that could not only match its international counterparts but also capture the essence of the ‘Australian spirit’ in a bottle. Early in the piece Bass & Flinders looked to France for inspiration on their production methods of fine brandies to guide the way they made this product. The result is a beautifully handcrafted Australian style aged spirit. Enclosed in a leather wrap, it makes for an exquisite gift. Please note: ABV may vary from batch to batch.
Other reviews... 100% chardonnay. Ochre is Bass & Flinders’ flagship aged brandy, aimed squarely at the luxury market with a serious price tag and a hand-stitched leather label. I certainly wouldn’t turn my nose up if this showed up under the Christmas tree, and while Australian brandy is generally very high quality, this one is right up there near the top. Far less fruit than its younger sibling on the nose, instead offering sandalwood and roasted stone fruit, that lovely apricot note is still present along with dried rose petals. It’s definitely less lush on the nose, more in line with what you would expect from a well-aged Cognac; refined and a little austere like an expensive cologne. The quality and complexity reveal themselves on the palate with fine cigar tobacco, restrained sweetness and excellent length without ever going over the top on tannin. 96 points - Fred Siggins, James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion
Notes from the producers... With a light amber honey colour the spirit's bouquet includes initial notes of riped pink lady, orange peel and cherry blossom which mature into deeper layers of raisins, caramel and vanilla. It's palate is an immediate blend of spices: cinnamon and cloves on the front palate, followed by subtle hints of almond and apple peel rounded out with a smooth vanilla mouthfeel for depth and length.Serve at slightly above room temperature, warming through the glass in your hand to allow the aromas and flavours to open up. 40% Alc./Vol
Earlier batch tasted 2015... Ideal clarity to the bright pure gold colour. Nosing yields rich, soft and pure aromas of apricot tart, prune, followed by fruit’n’nut chocolate, with later passes accenting fruit cake and clove. Entry is soft, medium dry; mid palate ups the intensity and is more grappa-like offering rich fruit cake, dried apricot and sweet spices to finish. Excellent length. Ends pleasantly warming, mildly tannic, waxy and lively. Vibrant, complex and different.

Linie Aquavit (700ml)Oslo, NORWAY$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 41.5%Aquavit – or "Water of Life" is Norway’s national spirit. The most famous of these is Linie. Produced from potatoes, Linie receives an infusion of caraway and other herbs to complete its fragrant, attractive character. The spirit is matured in sherry casks while on board cargo ships that voyage to the Southern Hemisphere and back (and sometimes further), crossing the equatorial line twice – hence the name ‘linie’=‘line’. The length of the trip, the perpetual rolling and the alternation of heat and cold works the spirit into the grain of the oak casks, contributing flavour and also infusing Linie with its pale gold colour. This tradition has been in continuous practise for over a century when it was first noticed that one particular batch of Aquavit, recently returned from Australia aboard a cargo clipper, had been imbued with an exceptional mellowness. The name of the ship in which each batch of Linie Aquavit is matured is indicated on the bottle label.
Aquavit is most frequently enjoyed straight and in Denmark & Scandinavia, is still used as an accompaniment to traditional seafood and salty, pungent dishes. Many Norwegians regard Linie as the essential companion to pork and other fat meat.
Linie has a limited shelf life of approximately two years. Avoid exposure to sunlight.
Other reviews... One of my all-time favorite spirits that I’ve not reviewed since 2003. Pale gold in color; unblemished clarity. First sniffs respond favorably to the delicate hints of caraway seed, rye bread dough and fennel – a fantastically inviting and understated opening bouquet; after another seven minutes of exposure to air, the aromatic profile focuses mostly on the caraway seed, but also entering the picture are subtle notes of chalk, Amontillado sherry, baker’s yeast and mint – an amazingly complex bouquet. Entry is seed-like, toasty, bready and peppery; midpalate shows more of the sherry aspect along with deep notes of oak and resin. A sublime, delicately bittersweet and woody end tops off a great spirit experience.

Long discontinued.
"Malts rarely come as understated or as clever as this." - Jim Murray.Introduced in 2004, the Macallan fine oak range was brought to the Australian whisky scene to offer a fruitier style of Macallan with less sherry influence. It soon gained a steady following with the best-selling Macallan 12yo Fine Oak immersed on the palates of many a whisky enthusiast. The Macallan 10yo Fine Oak has stylistically followed suit with this delicate expression, comfortably priced alongside benchmarks such as Highland Park 12 and Glenmorangie 10.
Matured in a combination of three woods: x Bourbon, x Sherry American oak and x Sherry European oak casks.
Tasting note: Bright gold. The nose offers an attractive balance between the Sherry and the Bourbon oak that combines well with the biscuity malt and touches of honey. Light to medium bodied, with good concentration, the palate delivers a deft touch of both Bourbon and Sherry influences being mildly fruity with the toasty, biscuity flavours repeating. Gently warming spirit. Subtle yet persistent spicy / malt aftertaste. Overall on the drier side, not particularly profound, but beautifully balanced for a youngster and possibly just enough Sherry here to lure back old school Macallan fans. 40% Alc./Vol.

Philippe de Bourgogne Creme de Cassis Blackcurrant Liqueur (700ml)Burgundy, FRANCE$59. 99Bottle$719.88 DozenABV: 20%Cassis is the French word for blackcurrant. The blackcurrant itself is of Nordic origin. It was only towards the beginning of the eighteenth century that Europe embraced it, both as a garden plant and for its medicinal qualities which earnt it the description of “elixir de vie.” However, as far back as the sixteenth century monks from the famous Dijon region of France are recorded to have been growing blackcurrant bushes. The drink they made from it was offered as a universal cure-all for everything from snake bite to depression. While this is stretching the truth, it is common knowledge that black currants are rich in vitamin C and the liqueurs made from them are enjoyable and healthy digestifs.
Tasting note: Pours a glycerous, opaque black / cherry red with a deep crimson hue. Appealing aromas include blackcurrant cordial and super ripe raspberry, followed by cranberry juice and a hint of pomegranate. Entry is thick, creamy, silky and just plain sensuous. Flavours are initially more like cranberry or slightly unripe raspberries, being concentrated and sweet but also nicely balanced by refreshing acidity. Creamy texture. Finishes clean and perfectly tart with a ripe blackcurrant / blackberry aftertaste. Possesses a fruit/acid balance that’s absent from too many fruit liqueurs nowadays. Nicely done.

Super-viscous, dense, oily consistency in the mouth with sweet mocha, vanilla and roasted coffee bean flavours. Patron 100% Agave Anejo Tequila (700ml)Jalisco, MEXICO$124. 99Bottle$1499.88 DozenABV: 40%Closure: CorkIn 1989 two visionaries, John Paul DeJoria and entrepreneur Martin Crowley formed The Patrón Spirits Company with the singular goal of producing “the best tequila in the world”. Under the stewardship of DeJoria and former Seagram executive Ed Brown, a new distilling factory was built in Jalisco. With the guidance of the renown master distiller Francisco Alcarez, the new factory was designed as a state-of-the-art complex but with a core steeped in tradition. Patrón Tequila has since become the world’s number one ultra premium tequila, outselling it’s nearest competitor by eight times in the United States alone. In 2004 Patrón Tequila was recognized with the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences Five Star Diamond Award. Patrón is the first spirits brand ever to receive this prestigious honor. The Company’s headquarters are in Las Vegas Nevada.
Jalisco, Mexico is considered the most ideal region for the production of the Blue Agave plant. The climate is warm and the soil is clayey with high ferrous oxide content, resulting in Agaves of higher "honey" or sugar content. Patrón tequilas are made from premium selected Weaber Tequilana Blue Agave plants. The trimmed heart of a premium agave plant resembles a large "pineapple" and takes eight to nine years to reach maturity. There are certain "bitter" sprouts which must be carefully removed from the "pineapple" before steam baking. Few distilleries still take the care and time to remove these sprouts as Patron does. After harvesting the Agave’s, the next step in Patron’s production is the slow vapour steam baking in masonry ovens. This steam baking takes approximately thirty six hours (most tequila factories fast cook the pineapples caramelizing the outside and leaving much of the inside under cooked, bitter and starchy.) The cooked agave is then carefully torn and placed in a shallow stone milling pit and slowly macerated by large stone milling wheels. Crushing in this fashion leaves the sweet juice freely absorbed in the mescal fibers. The juice filled fiber is then placed in wooden fermentation vats. Once in the fermentation vats the juice is naturally adjusted and yeast added to encourage fermentation. This fermentation lasts for sixty to seventy two hours. The "must" is then submitted to a double distillation in copper pot sills. The tequila is then balanced to 80 proof (40% Alcohol by volume) and fine filtered. Finally, like Patron’s extraordinary commitment to quality, the Patrón bottle is also unique. Each beautifully designed glass bottle is hand made and individually numbered making every one a collectable.
Patrón Añejo is a delicate blend of uniquely aged tequilas. All the tequilas are aged in small white oak barrels for a minimum of twelve months. As in many premium red wines, the blends must be adjusted for each vintage.
Tasting note: Pale straw colour with a water-like hue. Subdued with subtle notes of charry vanillan oak, liquorice, old tobacco and clay. Medium to full bodied; exceptionally smooth delivery includes flavours of sweet spice, baked citrus and hints of peppermint. Ends fleeting, dry. The aftertaste suggests liquorice, light spice and cedary. 40% Alc./Vol.

Liwen Hao - Wine Advocate (Nov 2017)From Japan’s far west beyond Hiroshima, Dassai produces only junmai daiginjo in three main styles; 23, 39 and 50, reflecting their respective polishing ratios. This lovely aromatic daiginjo displays plenty of intense, fragrant floral and melon notes, fresh without the unpasteurised zing of nama sake. It is smooth and richly flavoured with melon, pear, peach and touches of coconut and cinnamon. There is a lovely rich texture and elegant, long dry finish.

Alc. 11% - Drambuie Liqueur (700ml)Isle of Skye, SCOTLAND$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 40%
The isle of Skye is rich in its own individual Scottish history, legends, myth and magic - none more so than the romantic tale of Bonnie Prince Charlie, the rebel with a cause, whose life was protected by the young Flora Macdonald, the young lady who rowed him to safety, immortalised in the Skye Boat song. Members of the MacKinnon clan too were to be part of the story in helping the Prince escape government soldiers in the aftermath of the Battle of Culloden. His gift in gratitude of their support was a precious recipe which has been passed down through several generations of the MacKinnon family and today this honey-sweet golden drink is still enjoyed by millions across the world.
Drambuie is gaelic for the "drink that satisfies". Descendants of Mackinnon began commercial production in 1906 making twelve bottles a fortnight. It seems Prince Charles' gift paid off eventually - Drambuie now being served at Buckingham Palace, Parliament, the QE2 and on the Concorde & Orient Express.
Like Glayva or Lochan Ora, Drambuie uses fine mature malt whiskies as its base blending them with heather honey, herbs & spices. It goes well as an after dinner drink but is also pleasant in coffee. 40% alc/vol Try also the “Rusty Nail”:- Drambuie & Scotch, or simply pour Drambuie straight over ice.

Johnnie Walker Green Label 15 Year Old Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Fife, SCOTLAND$114. 99Bottle$1379.88 DozenABV: 43%'...God, I love this stuff... this is exactly how a vatted malt should be and one of the best samples I've come across since its launch.' - 95 points, Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2017.
Johnnie Walker Green Label is the only whisky in the Walker range to carry the 'Blended Malt Scotch Whisky' certification. It replaces the older term 'Vatted Malt' and indicates that the whisky has been blended exclusively from single malts, and not blended with inexpensive grain whisky. The Walker family began buying some of Scotland's finest distilleries over 100 years ago. Now, with over 27 malt whisky producers in ownership, the company doesn't have to look too far for the very best material. They can choose from the cream of the crop, and have also acquired over a century of distilling experience in the process, guaranteeing the quality of their whisky well into the future.
Undisputed as one of the all-time classics in its genre, Green label is instantly recognisable as a Walker blend, with a profile of fresh and slightly fruity aromas with hints of mango and toffee followed by the trademark whiff of peat & sea air that distinguishes most of the JW stable.
Tasting note: Brassy gold / impeccable clarity. A sophisticated, expressive nose offers an assemblage of soft, sweet peat, oatmeal biscuit, dried mango / fig, white pepper with good freshness - sustained even after several minutes in the glass. Full and well rounded in the mouth with nipping spices carrying the malty attack, along with flavours of salted crackers, restrained peat and an oily-yet-crisp finish with strong staying power. The vivacious and intensely flavoured character of this vatting will keep you coming back time and again. Forget Blue Label: Green and Gold remain the stars in the JW line up. 43% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Just as complex as Johnnie Walker Gold, but fuller and more richly textured. (Not surprising, given that there are no grain whiskies in Johnnie Walker Green.) This is one of the finer vatted malts on the market. Its flavors are well-integrated. You’ll find creamy toffee and nougat at its core, which is then layered with notes of vanilla, mint, fresh brine, and even a hint of mustard seed. Excitingly fresh and vibrant on the finish. A whisky for both the blend and single malt drinker. And at the price, it is also fairly valued for an all-malt whisky.

Glenfiddich Rich Oak 14 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenABV: 40%Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured. No gift box supplied.
Glenfiddich Rich Oak 14 Year Old has been aged in second fill Bourbon barrels for more than 13 years, and finished in new American and Spanish oak. The coopers at Glenfiddich reputedly had a significant input into the creation of this unusual bottling. According to the distillers, "The effect, as one would expect, is higher vanilla notes than is found normally in Glenfiddich... The notes of dried fruit and walnuts shine through as is the case with any Glenfiddich pour.”
Tasting note: Deep gold, brassy appearance. Initial passings reveal rich, sweet aromas of candied fruit, vanilla and clove with a faint suggestion of peat after several minutes of exposure. Medium to full bodied, with a supple mouth feel and a pleasant spiciness throughout, the palate offers mildly Sherried flavours by way of a semi sweet, fruit-malt interplay. Perfect balance. The mid palate intensity finishes slightly short, followed by a faint dried fruit and vanilla aftertaste with the subtle spiciness persisting. Well rounded, easy drinking that meets the standard expectations from this distillery. 40%
Other reviews...The result is something curiously hinting at Japanese, but without the crushing intensity. Delicious, thoughtful whisky and one to tick off on your journey of malt whisky discovery... 90.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2011
- Villa Massa Limoncello (Lemoncello) Liqueur (500ml)Sorrento, ITALY$56. 99Bottle$683.88 DozenABV: 30%
At the end of the 1800s, when guests came to Villa Massa, tradition dictated that they were offered a liqueur made from the fruit of the family lemon grove. The brothers Sergio and Stefano Massa founded the Villa Massa company in 1991 with the intention of making this liqueur accessible to everyone. Thus was born 'Villa Massa Traditional Lemon Liqueur', or as it is commonly called 'limoncello' now well-known all over the world.
Villa Massa was bought to our attention by a customer who believes it to be one of the finest liqueur experiences one can ever attain to. His unusual enthusiasm for the product intrigued us, so we decided to try a bottle ourselves. We must say, we were not disappointed. Unlike many impersonators, it's real limoncello from Sorrento, made with Sorrentine lemons, the only variety recognised by the term "Indicazione Geografica Protetta". Like other lemon liqueurs, it's best served icy cold, preferably on its own. But this particular expression possesses a lusciousness and intensity of natural fruit flavour found in few liqueurs. No wonder it's Italy's best-selling limoncello! No preservatives or colouring added. 30% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... The slightly greenish liqueur (you can even get a sense of this in the photo) is largely transparent, with some modest cloudiness, typical of real limoncello. There’s a fresh lemon nose here, with touches of lime. These both carry over to the body — the lime is particularly evident — along with ample sweetness, but none of it is overblown the way some limoncellos can be. All in all it’s quite a simple digestif, its fresh citrus notes finding a wonderful balance between sweet and sour. Every home should have one bottle of limoncello around to cap off a good Italian meal — and this one won’t break the bank. (Good limoncello really beats grappa, guys…) - drinkhacker.com

2018 Tertre RoteboeufSaint Emilion, Bordeaux, FRANCE$370. 00Bottle$4440.00 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
The 2018 Tertre-Rôteboeuf is a rich, heady Saint-Émilion. Ripe, flamboyant and creamy, the 2018 captures all of the opulence of the vintage. Black fruit, bittersweet chocolate, spice, new leather and tobacco gradually open in the glass, but the 2018 is a dense, plush wine that needs time to show all it has to offer. The bouquet displays a bit of reduction, so opening the wine in advance and possibly decanting, are advisable. As always, François Mitjavile crafts one of the most distinctive wines in all of Bordeaux. Drink 2026-2043.

Antonio Galloni - VinousThe Le Pin of Saint-Emilion, the 2018 Château Tertre Roteboeuf is another exotic, sexy, singular wine from the Mitjavile family, whose vineyard is ideally situated on the eastern side of Saint Emilion. The 2018 isn't far off the style of the 2016 yet is perhaps even more exotic and up-front, offering a wild nose of white chocolate, black cherries, green tobacco, bacon fat, exotic flowers, and vanilla bean. Brilliantly concentrated on the palate, it has silky, polished tannins, a rather muscular, structured style, thick aromas and flavors, and a great finish. This is another genius effort from François Mitjavile that's in the same league as the 2005, 2010, and 2016. There's nothing else out there that comes close to resembling the wines from this estate! It needs 5-7 years of bottle age and will evolve for 30 years or more. Drink 2026-2056.

Rhum Barbancourt 5 Star 8 Year Old Rum (700ml)Port-au-Prince, HAITI$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 43%Closure: Screw CapThe Controversial Caribbean The original definition of 'Rhum Agricole' was of a rum fermented and distilled from pure sugar cane juice. That changed in 1996 when an AOC (Appellation of Origin Control) was given to the French island of Martinique, a system used to maintain the quality of products such as this through specific guidelines regarding terroir and production. It was the catalyst for quarrelsome debate between rum lovers around the world, as the AOC declares that fermented and distilled sugar cane produced outside this appellation may not adopt the ‘Argicole’ classification. Debate also questions the effect of terroir on rum in general, which in comparison to products like wine, seems inconsequential. Seemingly more influential factors should be taken into account; such as design of the still being used or the point at which the spirit comes off the still.
There stands but one that challenges the merit of the AOC system - also the fundamental reason why the debate is ongoing. This is the Rhum Barbancourt of Haiti.
Established by Dupre Barbancourt in 1862, this rum is produced from pure sugar cane juice and double distilled in a manner similar to that of Cognac. Primary distillation comes off at roughly 70% by volume and secondary 90% by volume. The spirit is then cut to 50% before it is matured in 100% French Limousine oak for varying periods depending on the bottling in question - eight years in this case.
Tasting note: Pale gold colour. Moderate aromatics include soft, seductive scents of brown sugar and creme caramel with a refreshing spearmint lift making for an enticing sniff. Exceptionally pure, silky and very gently warming spirit carries an off dry, medium bodied profile including brown sugar, roast cashews and vanillan oak. Creamy mouthfeel. Long, gently spicy aftertaste with a subtle dried banana and peppermint fade. 43% Alc./Vol.

GRAPE VARIETIES: 95% Shiraz & 5% Cabernet Sauvignon
Alcohol: 12.4 % Total acids: 6.3 grams per litre pH: 3.76
GROWING SEASON / VINTAGE: A dry growing season followed by a cool vintage.
COMMENTS: This was the last wine made in the open, wax-lined concrete fermenters at the Magill winery. Subsequent vintages have been made at Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley. Considered a good wine from an undistinguished vintage. Nevertheless, won a trophy, five gold, four silver and six bronze medals between 1974 and 1982.
Tasting Notes:SIZE> Colour: medium deep red. Bouquet: particularly complex sweet oak and ripe fruit, something of a surprise. Palate: does not quite live up to the bouquet; much lighter style; sweet but not oxidised. (James Halliday, National Times, Nov. 1982)
Shows some bottle development. Good depth of fruit flavour and sweet oak. Quite complex. Ready to be enjoyed. (Rewards of Patience, 1st ed., 1985)
Complexity and balance make for an attractive mouthful. Good drinking. (Rewards of Patience, 2nd ed., 1990)
Meaty, slightly "animal", mature nose. Lovely, warm, generous wine in the mouth, fleshy and dense with high extract. At its peak. Drink now till around 2000. (Huon Hooke, 1992)
Meaty bouquet with hints of licorice and sweet chocolate. Sweet toffee and chocolate flavours on the palate, combined with medium extract and good tannin structure result in a richly textured and generously-flavoured wine. A lighter-bodied Grange. At its peak. (Rewards of Patience, 3rd ed., 1994)
Fully mature, with fruit, oak and aged characters all integrated. Some sweetness remains. (Ultimate Grange Experience, Nov. 1994)
"Medium brick red. Chamomile, citrus peel and chocolate/berry aromas with touches of soft leather. Very big and mouthfilling with sweet, stocky fruit and notes of tar, leather and nutmeg. Firm, gripping tannins and long finish. More structured style but still has a very good core of fruit sweetness. Drink now." (Southcorp Wines, The Rewards of Patience, Fourth Edition, March 2000)

Kilchoman Machir Bay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Islay, SCOTLAND$114. 99Bottle$1379.88 DozenABV: 46%Awarded Best NAS Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky at the IWSC 2016.
'Machir Bay' is the first general release from Kilchoman and is a vatting of 3, 4 and 5 year old whiskies, matured in fresh bourbon barrels and finished in oloroso sherry butts for eight weeks. Anthony Wills, Managing Director of Kilchoman adds “Machir Bay is one of the most beautiful beaches on Islay, close to the distillery. This expression will give continuity of supply to our customers around the world. Each year we will add more mature malt to the vatting.”
The house style tends towards a sweet, fruity and smoky malt. Here the nose presents powerful scents of lanolin-ike peat, brine and white pepper followed by hints of ripe citrus peel. Several minutes later fruit and nut chocolate comes to the fore. Typically complex, but drier than the nose suggests, the palate shows excellent concentration; Lively spices mingle with citrus peel and dried fruit, lanolin and brine. The finish is fresh, tangy, mildly peppery with a subtle kipper aftertaste. An invigorating malt - possibly showing more peat than previous Kilchomans, too. 46% Alc./Vol.Other reviews... A thudding, thumping dram hitting you like a Dave Mackay tackle. Big peat, perfectly representing a big malt. 94 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2019
... I detect strong and defined notes of dried bay leaf, seaweed, cabbage, starch, and dry stone — it’s a bone dry, herbal, vegetal aroma pointing to a maritime location on Islay; secondary whiffs pick up sandy beach, arid calcareous soil/limestone, hemp/rope, textile fiber, shellfish. Entry is piquant, intensely nutty, slightly prickly, with tastes of dill, brine, pickles, almond paste, sea salt, and it’s so acidic that it cleanses the palate; midpalate highlights the salinity, dill and almond in a wonderful display of melded flavors that lead into the finish, which is medium long, vegetal, ultra-clean, tight, and efficiently delicious. This whisky has no rough edges or wasted traits or twists and turns. A nimble, compact Islay malt that’s economically forward and seaside-splendid. Highly Recommended - spiritjournal.com

2016 Chateau Doisy DaeneBarsac, Bordeaux, FRANCE$120. 00Bottle$1440.00 DozenClosure: CorkOnce part of the original Doisy estate founded in 1704, Chateau Doisy Daene takes its name from Jacques Emmanuel Daane, an owner in the late nineteenth century who combined his surname with that of Doisy following the estate's division. After changing hands several times, the property was acquired in 1924 by the Dubourdieu family and gradually rebuilt and expanded to its current 18.2 hectares. The Barsac vineyard, located close to Chateau Climens, is planted predominantly to Semillon with a smaller proportion of Sauvignon Blanc, on red sand, clay and limestone soils. Alongside its Sauternes, the estate is notable for producing one of the appellation's earliest dry white wines, bottled as Doisy Daene Grand Vin Sec, as well as the rare and highly selective l’Extravagance de Doisy Daene in exceptional vintages.

Jack Daniels Single Barrel Tennessee Rye Whiskey (700ml)Tennessee, UNITED STATES$134. 99Bottle$1619.88 DozenABV: 45%A watershed bottling being the brand's first new mash bill in 150 years (70% rye, 18% corn and 12% malted barley). This follows on from what started with an “Unaged Rye” in 2012. Reportedly at least fours years old (though not confirmed) the barrels are aged in the upper regions of the barrel house where they're exposed to broad temperature variations. Tasting note: [Barrel 16-7297 tasted] Beaming deep amber colour. Initial whiffs of shellac are subdued by attractive aromas of apple pie, oak shavings, clove and later, peachy fruit in an unusual opening bouquet. Air contact adds dusty cocoa and cool mint. Semi sweet entry leads into a well rounded rye - no sharp edges here, in fact almost buttery in the mouth with gentle spice, glace cherry and peppermint, finishing with Jack Daniel's signature maple-char flavours and cherry notes through the aftertaste. A textural, mid-range style that hits all the right notes. 45% Alc./Vol. Other reviews...this rye doesn’t disappoint. Butter-toasted rye bread and vanilla, with hints of herbs and campfire smoke. Then fruit…a lot of fruit: pear, banana, pineapple, followed by a bevy of sweets—caramel, butterscotch, and toffee, mainly—with a delightful cinnamon bread finish. Intense aromas of ripe blackcurrant intermixed with liquorice and blackberry are followed by some choc mint, vanillin cedar and spice. Ask a native where you could sample J.Wray & Nephew over-proof rum, and they will tell you knock on the door of any household. Such is the legendary status of this spirit that it accounts for 90% of rum sales in Jamaica. Other brands produced under the J.Wray & Nephew name are Captain Morgan, Coruba and the renowned Appleton Estate range. Use this product in classic rum punches with tropical juices. Alternate with flavoured rums and liqueurs for something new. Also great in the traditional Mai Tai and Daiquiri.
Other reviews... This is the flagship rum from Wray and the rum ... familiar instantly on the nose, with a mixture of citrus and petrol notes, very aromatic with florals and the raw alcoholic notes one expects from an overproof rum. The body is a bit tougher and astringent, slightly charcoal-dusted but otherwise intense with fruit, both citrus and tropical, with overtones of overripe banana, bubble gum, and a touch of eucalyptus on the finish. Surprisingly approachable despite the heavy alcohol level. - drinkhacker.com
...I’m not a huge white rum lover but this is as good as I have had. It will give a massive kick to tiki style cocktails, where it is very often used. W&N Overproof is very popular and highly regarded amongst bartenders and mixologists. Rightly so as well. The danger in this drink maybe that at 63% its very drinkable. At the price it is also very good value. W&N Overproof needs to be evaluated on what it is. It is a very good white overproof mixer. It’s availability and price makes it a no-brainer to have on hand. 4/5 stars - thefatrumpirate.com
...I have gained a sort of sneaking appreciation for overproofs, including this one, because while it lacks the subtlety of a more refined 40% variation (subtlety? don’t make me laugh…the thing is like a charging brontosaurus on steroids at rutting time), it makes an intense, strong, powerfully tasting mix with whatever you decide to chase it. Try adding cola to a 40% low-ender and then to the White Overproof and try and tell me this one doesn’t have more character, more taste, more…well, cojones. It absolutely is not afraid to charge the gates and get the hell off the reservation. When you drink J. Wray’s clear hooch, reader, there’s no ifs, ands or buts — you know Elvis has left the building; and didn’t just exit, he took off with rocket-powered, turbo-charged steel-toed boots. And a jet pack.... made by one company that remembers its roots and continues to distil a real rum. - thelonecaner.com

- Rhum J.M. VSOP Agricole Rum (700ml)Macouba, MARTINIQUE$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 43%Martinique is a French island with the largest number of distilleries in the Eastern Caribbean. Both pot and column stills are used. As on other French islands such as Guadeloupe, both rhum agricole (made from sugar cane juice) and rhum industriel (made from molasses) are produced. These Rums are frequently aged in used French brandy casks for a minimum of three years with 'Rhum vieux' (aged Rum) frequently compared to high-quality French brandies. J.M rum is distilled on Martinique's smallest estate, located in the northeast in Macouba, where the sugar cane grows on 28-degree vertical slopes in rich volcanic soil at the foot of Mount Pelée. Due to its unique location with sea breezes, rainforest, an intense microclimate, and high cloud cover, Rhum J.M. cuts their sugar later than other distilleries (most cut the cane at the end of February or early March, whereas Rhum J.M. does not cut theirs until late March or early April). This practice, combined with the region's peculiar environment are said to be contributing factors to the unique flavour of the rum. The VSOP has been aged for 4-5 years. Other reviews... This is a Scotch-lover’s rum, with an intriguingly smoky flavor reminiscent of a lightly peated whiskey fading into a lingering finish touched with vanilla and tropical fruit. Light body and light amber color. 43% Alc./Vol. 90 points

Clairin Vaval (700ml)HAITI$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 49.3%From the village of Cavaillon, three hours drive from Port au Prince. Heirloom sugar cane called "Madame Meuze" is the focus, the cane juice distilled at the Arawaks distillery under the direction of Fritz Vaval. Founded after the war by Fritz’s father, the estate possesses 20 hectares of cane grown without fertilizers or artificial pesticides. In the glass the rum appears clear with thick legs; It's very pure on the nose with a whiff of herbal freshness and a lovely yeasty / bready / grassy character, air contact adding hints of varnish, pickle, brine, icing sugar, dilute molasses. Exceptionally soft, medium-bodied, dry and fresh with a herbal-bready entry, you also get sweet pickle flavours, brine and developing oiliness but it winds up bone dry, minerally, yeasty with anise / dill freshness lingering. - Kahlua Licor de Cafe Liqueur (700ml)MEXICO$44. 99Bottle$539.88 DozenABV: 16%
Full bodied, rich and sweet, Kahlua is the essence of Mexican Mocha coffee. Kahlúa is also the original coffee liqueur, and was first produced in Mexico in 1936. However, it was not until the early 1960s that Jules Berman, an entrepreneur and art collector, introduced it to the United States. Berman sold the brand to Hiram Walker and Sons in 1964, but he remained as a corporate officer in charge of brand development until 1970.
Though its specific origins remain a mystery, the rich and distinct taste of Kahlúa is now popular all over the world. The product became famous in Boston, USA during the 1950's as a cocktail when it was mixed with milk to create the 'Sombrero'. It is now drunk with milk in every country to which it is exported.
Only the finest 100% Arabica coffee beans are used in the Kahlúa blend. Veracruz has the required altitude and semi-tropical climate for growing a light-bodied bean with a subtle hint of chocolate – the essence of Kahlúa’s distinctive aroma and flavour. The coffee plants are grown under trees, so the beans can ripen slowly in the shade without the use of pesticides. The ripe beans are hand-picked, washed and sun-dried.
Once harvested, the coffee beans are roasted lightly – just enough to develop a delicate flavour – then coarsely ground to preserve the natural sweetness of the beans. The ground coffee is immediately extracted with water to produce freshly percolated coffee, which is then blended with cane spirits, vanilla and caramel.
