A medium to full bodied Rhone with an underlying leathery barnyard element.

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave represents one of the longest examples of vinous lineage in the world, with the family making wines in the area since 1481. Now under the guidance of Gerard Chave and his son Jean-Louis, the pair draws on five centuries of expertise to craft each of their wines. While known for the enviable collection of prime plots on the hill of Hermitage, their other main skill is in precise blending each year to best express the region and vintage.
J.L. Chave Selection is the exclusive negociant label of Jean-Louis Chave, and represents a more accessible way to experience the wines of the Chave family.
Dense black dark red core with a deep dark red hue. Leathery barnyard like top notes dominate the nose with some dark cherry, liquorice, earth and pepper scents also evident. From a vineyard planted in 2005. Matured in a combination of stainless steel and small and large oak; 3g/L RS. A light, bright green gold. Mac's always had a great feel for riesling and this is another goodun' in a long line. Superb aged riesling, always released to excellent effect following a decade of bottle age. Light-weighted, with an intensity of flavor and precision that belies its balletic gait. Think spiced quince, honeydew, candied citrus, lemon balm and a faint whiff of kerosene. Yet there is nothing untoward here. The acidity is nicely nestled into what feels like an almost plump mid-palate after the effects of ageing. This is a cooler block on this esteemed site, its wine really sitting pretty. Drink now. A very mature release here. Patience from the Barry family, delivered to you. Magnificent. Complex, supple and loaded with honey toast, truffle and sugared almond. The calling cards of lime, preserved lemon and spicy ginger work their magic in bouquet and palate. A gourmet wine, with so much going on in each mouthful and plenty to savour. Complexity, structure and vitality all here, too. This is a superb cellar release. Drink by 2030.

Australian wine producers do love having the word ‘block’ in a wine name. I’ll knock your flamin’ block off you drongo. Vineyard sits at 497 metres above sea level. Planted in 1979.
Lime, lemon zest, honey, quince, mint, a discreet petrol top note, slightly spicy too. It has more flavour and less overt acidity than the Block 114, a lick of spice and dried peel, some toasty complexity, with some Bickford’s lime cordial on a dry finish of excellent length and dusty grip.
Very good aged Clare Riesling, and distinctive in that style. Drink 2023-2033+

2024 is officially the 60th anniversary of the planting of Drumborg vineyard. A truly wonderful milestone! A terrific wine, too, opening with focused aromas of lemon sherbet, pink grapefruit, makrut lime and orange blossom. The palate is just as focused and pure fruited, with the wine's 3.6g/L residual sugar perfectly balanced by its mouth-watering acidity. Have this with food now, but make sure you still have a bottle or two a decade, or longer, from now. Drink by 2032.

What a fitting, beautifully aromatic wine to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the planting of the Drumborg vineyard! The decision to plant Riesling in the ultra-cool Drumborg district all those decades ago was truly ahead of its time and has been rewarded year after year with a wine that celebrates the heady, floral aromatics of the variety, while also rewarding substantial cellaring.  Spring flowers, so engaging, with the lifted scent of wildflowers, citrus blossom, apple, lemon, lime and grapefruit zest beckons from the glass.  Against a strong core of lime, lemon and Delicious apple and with just a hint of Asian fruits, the wine lights up in bright, zingy acidity . . . just like sucking on a Mayer lemon with great balance throughout. A fine Riesling by any measure. Drink 2024-2034.

    Clase Azul Guerrero Mezcal (750ml)
    Oaxaca, MEXICO
    $650. 00
    Bottle
    $7800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 42%

Please note: due to the matte textured finish on these decanters, they are sensitive to touch and may show minor scuff marks. This is unavoidable. The producers recommend rinsing them under running water to maintain their finish. Avoid using rags or paper products to clean the decanter.

A brand beloved by many a tequila and Mezcal fan, Clase Azul has recently added several new additions to the line up. "Guerrero" is crafted using the Papalote agave, a unique species native to the humid highlands of Guerrero in Mexico's south. Alternatively known as agave cupreata, it imparts a distinct character to the resulting mezcal, drawing influence from the region's coastal landscape and verdant forests: Think grapefruit zest, freshly cut wood, rosemary and toasted peanuts, hints of butter and daisies on the nose, with seaweed, lemon juice, pepper, and light tobacco on the palate. Notable is the fact that the agaves are milled by hand, rather than using a donkey and tahona or mechanical mill. The manual process is said to retain more of the plant's flavours while adding length and body to the distillate. Followers of Clas Azul will appreciate the stunning hand-crafted decanter, in particular, the vibrant cap featuring hummingbirds, lacquered by artisans according to traditional techniques. For anyone who caves into actually opening a bottle, try pairing it with fresh goat's cheese or white chocolate. 42% Alc./Vol. Kosher certified.

El Ron Prohibido Reserva Solera 15 Rum (700ml)
    MEXICO
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

During the early 1700s, ships would come from Spain to the New World, bringing with them sweet raisin wine, which would be bottled and sold in Mexico. For the return trip, the barrels would be filled with “Chinguirito” (which was the name for Mexican rum). During the course of the voyage, the spirit would take on the flavours of the barrel and the sweet wine. As its popularity grew, wine-makers in the region began to see the spirit as a threat, so the King of Spain prohibited its production, hence the name El Ron Prohibido, “The Forbidden Rum”. That title has now been given a new lease of life. Solera aged in former Pedro Ximenez Spanish oak barrels, the oldest spirit in the blend is said to be around 15 years old. Like its younger sibling, it serves up notes of dark sugar and coffee with plenty of sweet dried fruit notes, tannic oak, black tea, creamy vanilla and toffee. 40% Alc./Vol.

    MEXICO
    $114. 99

    $1379.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Arguably the most full bodied rum in the El Ron Prohibido collection, the amber-coloured Solera 22 is derived from distillation in small copper pot stills, delivering a heavier spirit. Ageing takes place in a solera system. In this case, it's reported that the number 22 refers to the number of barrels and not the age of the liquid itself. 40% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Nose: sugar cane syrup, vanilla, caramel, peach, cocoa, almond, pecan, cinnamon, anise, cloves, wood, a hint of smoke. Flavor: peach, vanilla, nut (pecan, almond), clove, sugar syrup, caramel, mint. Aftertaste: wood, smoky tobacco.

    $7800.00 Dozen

Please note: due to the matte textured finish on these decanters, they are sensitive to touch and may show minor scuff marks. This is unavoidable. The producers recommend rinsing them under running water to maintain their finish. Avoid using rags or paper products to clean the decanter.

From a brand better known for tequila comes this amazing Mezcal - and for some afficionados, it's their absolute favourite. Made using agaves from Durango in Northern Mexico, the Cenizo agave variety needs around 10-15 years to mature. The agaves are milled by hand, rather than using a donkey and tahona, and the spirit is aged (or rested) for five years in glass demijohns before bottling. It conjures aromas of cooked agave and tejocote pulp with hints of smoke and fresh rosemary, the palate more herbal upfront with lemon peel and charred agave and a long smoky finish. The stunning decanter is made of a volcanic material and hand crafted, while the lid is made by Huichol artisans in a style called 'Chaquira' whereby all the beads are individually stuck on by hand. A must for any bar or collection. Certified Kosher.

Tasted from a 10ml sample... Clear. Sweetly smokey with suggestions of smoldering cedar, menthol rub, peppercorns and bicycle tube. Silky, tactile and surprisingly elegant for mezcal, with a slow crescendo of smokey, ashy, oily agave flavours and a creamy-yet-fresh finish. Grilled capsicum, barbecue char, white pepper and rubber mingle in the medium long aftertaste. Complex and seamlessly integrated. 44% Alc./Vol.

Sailor Seeks Horse is a tiny vineyard that's one of Australia’s most southerly, located in the Huon valley in southern Tasmania. Owners Paul and Gilli Lipscombe have brought considerable vineyard and winemaking experience to this venture, and they've been producing outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay here for over a decade.

In 2010 Paul and Gilli planted four Dijon clones of Chardonnay (95, 96, 76 & 277) in two sections of the vineyard over 2 hectares. Winemaking is tailored to the season, yet generally involves whole bunches pressed and allowed to 'hyperox' before settling for 12 hours in tank. It's then racked into 300l hogsheads of which 20% is new. Fermentation uses wild yeasts, generally no MLF, and the wine is then aged for 12 months with full lees.

Owners Paul and Gilli Lipscombe have brought considerable vineyard and winemaking experience to this venture, and they've been producing outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay here for over a decade.

While there are a multitude of clonal Pinot Noir plantings on site, this release utilises their more traditional Tasmanian clones of 8048 and 2051. A small percentage of whole bunch (5%) is included, with a wild fermentation and gentle plunging before being left on skins post ferment and the wine is then pressed straight to barrel. A mixture of barriques, hogsheads and puncheons are used as the wine is aged for 12 months in oak.

There's a lovely waft of souk-like spice as soon as you approach this year's release. It suffuses gently through the perfectly formed red cherry, raspberry and red plum fruits. Hints of redcurrants, kombu, leaf litter, crushed stone, sea breeze, charcuterie and ozone. Airy and wonderfully detailed with gentle spicy red fruits, a cloud of powdery tannin and a super sapid sour-cherry acid line on the fade out. Delicious, filigreed drinking. Drink 2024-2034.

Wild ferment, clones 114, 777, 115, destemmed, 12 months in barrel (11% new). Finely honed redcurrant and raspberry aromas here with a wash of cranberry for high tones. It smells delicate and filigreed with hints of Medina spice, sous bois, fennel gratin, cherry clafoutis, drying meadow flowers, poached rhubarb and earth. More of the same on the palate, savoury and spacious with fine detail to its form and a lovely briny cadence that pushes the wine forward. Jeez, it's pretty darn good. Drink 2024-2034.

Light and juicy with a long appealing finish that has an energized feel.

Established in 1996 by John and Simon Denton, Denton’s "View Hill" vineyard in Yarra Glen is set on granitic sandy soil with a north-facing aspect. In 2024, John Denton retired, selling the estate to Scott Bishop, who has fully immersed himself in its daily operations. Winemaker Kirilly Gordon, with experience in Victoria, France, and Italy, has led production since 2022, while vineyard manager Julian Parrott, with over five years on-site, ensures meticulous care of the vines.

The Shed range prioritizes perfume, texture, and drinkability, with an emphasis on lightness and delicacy. Bottled early to retain freshness, these wines are approachable and ready to enjoy upon release. The Shed Pinot Noir is sourced primarily from Block 6 on the vineyard’s cooler northeastern slope, with additional fruit from the close-planted Block 4. Predominantly MV6 with some 115 and Pommard clones, the fruit underwent spontaneous fermentation with 10% whole bunches and gentle plunging or pumpovers. After two weeks on skins, it was pressed to a mix of tank (10%) and old French oak puncheons (90%) for nine months of maturation, before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Slightly cloudy red to dark red colour with a light red hue. Perfumed violet like aromas are followed by red cherry and wild strawberry scents with some fresh herb and subtle forest floor notes also evident. Light, juicy and vibrant in it’s feel, delicious red cherry and wild strawberry fruits are underscored by tangy acidity. Some blood orange, fresh herb and forest floor elements sit in the background. Polished tannins with a long appealing finish that has an energized feel.

Alain Graillot has proved beyond a doubt that it is possible to make rich wines from the gently sloped alluvial plain where the Isère River meets the Rhone. His concentrated reds demonstrate all that is exciting about the Syrah grape: black fruit, intense aromaticity, pepper and spice complexity underpinned by crisp acidity and fine tannins.

Graillot works organically, harvesting fruit by hand and fermenting in whole bunches. He chooses to age his wines in used barrels, one to three-years-old, purchased from Burgundy’s best estates. His Crozes-Hermitage is difficult to resist young. Despite the tannins that inevitably come from the inclusion of whole bunches in fermentation, Graillot wines are seldom hard-edged, overly tannic, or in need of extended cellaring. In fact, they are often flat-out delicious very soon after release. That being said, their track record for rewarding patient cellaring is exemplary.

    Other Reviews....
A textural, balanced and harmonious red with such patina already. The nose shows notes of dark cherries, fresh plums, forest floor and warm spices. Medium-bodied with fine tannins. Dense and velvety, with a kick of peppercorns. Juicy, vivid and fresh finish. Drink or hold.

The late Stanislao (Stanko) Radikon’s bold decision in the 1990s to embrace extended skin contact and natural winemaking, alongside his neighbour Josko Gravner, played a pivotal role in the global rise of amber/orange wines. Over the course of 36+ vintages Stanko, and now his son Sasa, have remained uncompromising in their pursuit of wines that are pure expressions of their Friulian terroir, rejecting chemical additives, temperature control, and sulphur. Rooted in the traditions of Stanko’s grandfather, the Radikon estate in Oslavia focuses on Ribolla Gialla, with vineyards planted on steep clay and shale slopes, meticulously farmed by hand. Since 1995, Stanko progressively returned to historical methods, extending maceration from 7 days to 3 months and eliminating sulphur entirely by 2002, crafting age-worthy wines that are, in Stanko's words, "totally genuine." While the core of the estate was formed around plantings of Ribolla Gialla, Stanko’s parents also added small parcels of Merlot, Tocai Friulano and Pinot Grigio.

Sivi is 100% Pinot Grigio that spends eight to ten days macerating on the skins.

    Other Reviews....
The 2022 Bianco Sivi, Radikon’s 100% Pinot Grigio that spends eight to ten days macerating on the skins, is a vivid, dark, pink color with violet hues. This is wonderfully fresh and floral with a spicy bouquet that blends rose petals with ginger and incense. It’s potent and savory in style, with juicy acidity to balance the depths of tart citrus and wild berry fruits that cascade throughout. The 2022 tapers off with a balance of sweet spice and cheek-puckering citrus, adding remarkable contrasts through the long and perfumed finale. Drink 2024-2029.

Wickedly fresh, the 2019 Ribolla wafts up with a perfumed blend of young peaches, dried flowers and wet stone. It’s silky smooth yet full of mineral tension. A salty flourish gives way to masses of tart orchard fruits and a staining of liquid florals. Dark and beastly, in the best possible way, the 2013 Pignoli smolders up with a blend of cedar, cloves, dried black cherries, ashen stone and camphor. This is silky-smooth upon entry, with a zesty acidic core to balance. Tart wild berry fruits mingle with saline minerals and hints of sour citrus. Grippy Pignolo tannins take control through the finish, tapering off pleasantly bitter and long. Rosy inner florals and steeped plum nuances linger long.

This 3781 Riserva is only produced in the best vintages, with the number representing parcel of the best grapes harvested that year. 100% Ribolla Gialla which sees three months skin contact, four years in barrel, and then ten years in bottle prior to release.

    Other Reviews....
A blend of dried apricot, ginger, incense and cedar shavings wafts up from the 2009 Ribolla 3781 to form its spicy bouquet. This is surprisingly fresh and energetic, following the performance on the nose, yet quickly gains in tension as saline minerals and citrus tones saturate. The 2009 tapers off earthy and savory, leaving suggestions of sous bois and a salty flourish that lingers on. The Ribolla 3781 is a harvest selection from the 2009 vintage. This spends four years in barrel following three months of maceration on the skins. Radikon has since lowered the aging period to three years in barrel to reduce some of the oxidation present here. Drink 2024-2031.

Producing since 2018, their approach is small-batch, innovative and flexible without the constraints of a large corporate structure. Barley is grown on the farm and an on-site water source is employed, so there's full traceability over production. Adelphi's selection was matured in a single first fill Bourbon barrel. 265 bottles are on offer at 59.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    $149. 99
    Bottle
    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

Not only have Ardnamurchan been busy celebrating the distillery turning ten years old, they've also launched their first ever Sauternes cask malt. It's made up of unpeated spirit initially matured for over five years in first-fill bourbon casks before being transferred to Sauternes barriques for an additional 2.5 years. Clocking up eight years in oak makes it one of the distillery's oldest releases to date. Bottled at high strength, the batch equates to 6000 bottles across the globe.

For those who don't already know, Sauternes is a famous Bordeaux wine region synonymous with the world's finest sweet white wines. No surprise then that the secondary ageing adds another twist to the Hebridean spirit - a nose full of apricot jam, almond flakes, marzipan, brioche and dried stone fruit, followed by a finish that's less sweet than the nose, wonderfully balanced and slightly dry with some of that classic Ardnamurchan salinity shining through. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
