    $160. 00
    Bottle
    $1920.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50.4%

WHA's first barrel pick for 2024 represents 228 bottles of High West Distillery Double Rye finished for 11 months in a Manhattan cask. "What's that?" you might ask. The distillery makes its own batches of the cocktail using sweet vermouth and aromatic bitters, matures the mix in ex-rye whiskey casks and markets it in 700ml bottles. Barrel #27342 was filled with an MGP mash bill of 95% straight rye / 5% malted barley and 80% rye / malted rye High West Distillate - hence the name 'Double Rye'. Both were a minimum of two years old. The nose takes a while to wake up, slowly releasing mixed nuts, light peppermint and bitter dark chocolate that's reflected on the palate as Brazil nuts, bitter dark chocolate and oily rye take over with interesting hints of dry triple sec. The texture builds with creamy vanillas and zippy rye spices maintaining momentum. This experiment takes rye on a slightly different tangent: mouth filling and enough to chew your way through, however it's hard to tell if the finishing has actually helped or hindered. 50.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

High West High Country Single Malt American Whiskey (750ml)
    Park City, Utah, UNITED STATES
    $180. 00
    Bottle
    $2160.00 Dozen
    ABV: 44%

Considering the global growth in single malts, it’s no surprise Americans are now pushing their own version. A relatively new entrant into the category is this 'Scottish style' malt aged two to nine years in virgin American oak and refill casks. Both freshly charred and second-use oak barrels are used during the maturation, including used bourbon & rye and ex-port. We received a 30ml sample. Smelling like a young Bourbon only 'thicker' and maltier, it's a soft, medium-bodied whiskey blending flavours of ripe peach and cereals with fresh American oak and dustings of cocoa. The finish is crisp and slightly apply, spiced up by hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. According to the producers, this introduces a new style having being distilled “on-the-grain”, that is to say, High West leave grain in during fermentation and distillation instead of filtering it out. They claim it helps to create a whiskey "loaded with creamy roasted grain and nutty chocolate flavours with a smooth, creamy texture". 44% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Very malt-forward, with the grain aromas pleasant and sweet, accompanied by whiffs of pine nuts and pepper spice. The palate is malty and well-textured, though it seems young, and offers notes of candied watermelon, poached pears, and red apple slices. Lots of maltiness on the finish as well, with chocolate spice and vibrant fresh fruit notes of apple and peach. A pleasant whiskey that perhaps needs a bit more maturity. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Notes from the producers... Nose: Roasted macadamia nuts, dried cherry, bananas Foster, toasted coconut, chocolate chip ice cream, raisin bread, soft wood smoke in a sooty chimney, sea spray. Taste: Smoked pear, honey over baked apples, lemon rind, cherry Toblerone, dark chocolate milkshake topped with whipped cream, toffee nuts, toasted puffed rice, sea salt & buttered skillet brioche rolls.

High West A Midwinter Nights Dram Straight Rye Whiskey (750ml)
    Park City, Utah, UNITED STATES
    $260. 00
    Bottle
    $3120.00 Dozen
    ABV: 49.3%

Named as a take off of Shakespeare's famous play, High West's blend of straight ryes sources whiskeys from MGP, however as of 2018 (the 6th Act), High West's own distillate is included. The mash bill of the two components is 95% rye / 5% barley (MGP), with an 80% rye / 20% malted rye mash bill from High West. The age of the whiskeys is said to be 4-7 years old, which is medium by rye standards. At the time of writing, we're onto the 8th edition. As this is a seasonal release (different 'vintages' are stated as different acts on the front label), batches will be subject to change without notice (the scene number just refers to different bottling days). The ryes are first aged in new, charred American oak, then blended and finished in French oak and ex-port barrels. Bottled at 49.3% and non chill filtered, the producers describe the flavour profile as being reminiscent of Christmas pudding.

Other reviews... The robust spicy rye notes are still present in the glass, but as it sits, red fruit tempers that just a bit. As you taste, the spicy rye comes again to the forefront along with vanilla and more red fruit. The finish is warm and spice filled with hints of chocolate and fresh whipped cream with a dash of white pepper. 92 points - distiller.com

[Sixth edition reviewed]... A nose of gingerbread, allspice, nutmeg, vanilla, and cinnamon melds with fragrant cedar chest, leather, and oak. The palate offers sweet blackberry, chocolate, raisins, and dried plums, along with toasted oak and tobacco, leading to a spicy finale. A beautiful balancing act and a wonderfully indulgent treat. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: David Fleming (Spring 2019)

...The proportion of each whiskey is not revealed, though all are at least five years old. If I had to guess, I’d peg the percentages at 65% bourbon, 20% rye, and 15% Scotch. All the elements are here, dominated by vanilla and honey-flavored nougat. The nose offers the smoke — inescapable in even a mildly peated Scotch — and that carries through on the body, especially on the finish of the whiskey. In the middle, more sweetness, and a racy spiciness that speaks to the rye. (Peat will dominate all of these elements any day, especially the rye, hence my relatively low proportion of Scotch on my estimated blending bill.) All in all, well, it works. High West even goes so far as to say “you may not like it at first” but I’m liking it from the get-go. All kinds of complexity here — tobacco leaf, tea, wood, leather, blackberries — but it all comes together in the end. Whiskey fans served blind will undoubtedly guess this is Scotch — Highlands, maybe — and that will surely serve to inform many a bar bet over the coming months until Campfire is sold out. The rest of us can simply enjoy it on its own merits. 2012 review. - drinkhacker.com

    $1320.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

High West Distillery and Saloon started with one man’s passion to make a great Rocky Mountain Whiskey. Proprietor and distiller David Perkins married his background as a biochemist, his love of bourbon and cooking, and his passion for the American West to bring the craft of small-batch distilling back to Utah.

Double Rye! is a marriage of straight rye whiskies sourced from multiple distilleries that combines the feisty properties of a high rye 2-year-old with older material. The extra age provides some added sweetness to calm the "bite" of the younger rye.

Tasting note: [BATCH 12J16 tasted] Deep gold / brassy appearance. The aroma is more restrained than the Rendevous presenting an unusual combination of charry oak, vanilla wafer, clove and muddled mint followed by hints of apple strudel and dried banana. Compared to the Rendevous, the palate delivers a more opulent rye profile, with softer spices all round, and again, with an unusual dried banana / vanilla edge followed by hints of cocoa. Finishes more typically rye-like with a drying surge that includes hints of liquorice, crunchy rye grains and pulsing spices tailing off into the aftertaste. Perhaps not everyone’s idea of a ‘text book’ rye but immensely appealing and with a degree of complexity that keeps you intrigued. Non Chill filtered. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... ...Perhaps the spiciest American whiskey I have ever tasted, yet at the same time, quite tame and mellow. Complex notes of mint, clove, cinnamon, licorice root, pine nuts, and dark chocolate, with a surprising dose of gin botanicals throughout. A soft underbelly of caramel, sweet corn, and soothing vanilla provides an interesting counterpoint. Very easy-drinking, too (hard to believe it's 46%). Intriguing, and a must-try for rye whiskey aficionados - even if only to satisfy your curiosity. 90 points - John Hansell, www.maltadvocate.com

Rendezvous Rye is a blend of two exotic straight rye whiskies; one old, and one young. It marries the rich aromatic qualities of a 16-year-old, 95% rye mash bill whiskey with the bold, spicy properties of 6-year-old rye to create a full flavored, very complex whiskey.

Tasting note: [BATCH 12H14 tasted] Deep burnished copper / gold ochre colour. First inhalations reveal a mild shellac note alongside charry American oak. Several minutes in the glass yields hints of mint and old liquorice strap alongside spicy, apply rye that's enriched with further exposure becoming more apple crumble / toffee apple like. The palate delivers a classic, punchy rye. A full, round delivery is augmented by lively, perfectly balancing spices. Crisp, dry mouthfeel. Excellent concentration. Terrific balance. Long spicy rye aftertaste with a faint trace of liquorice emerging late. Loads of personality and complexity. Non chill filtered. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... ...Thanks to the high rye content, this whisky is very spicy, with cinnamon, crisp mint and fennel. Underlying sweet notes of caramel, molasses, vanilla, macaroon, cocoa, and candied fruit … enhance the whiskey’s complexity. But, in the end, the rye is the victor, emerging with a vengeance and giving the whiskey a bold, warming spice finish.” 95 points John Hansell, www.maltadvocate.com

High West distillery are not only keen on whiskey, they're also dedicated to preserving and promoting the American West. Their "American Prairie Reserve" release is dedicated to a vast reserve project in Montana - a 5000 square mile land tract the size of Connecticut, restored to what Lewis and Clark would have seen.

This is another blend, typically composed of whiskies atleast 2 years old with a mashbill of 75% Corn, 20% rye and 5% barley malt. This is blended with a Bourbon with a mashbill of around 60% Corn, 35% rye, and 5% barley malt.

Tasting note: [BATCH 13D03 tasted] Bright and clear, deep gold / polished copper appearance. A shy opening builds intensity to reveal an atttractive, soft, clean bouquet that offers suggestions of creme caramel, mocha and fresh sawn wood. A full, round and perfectly poised profile delivers a deliciously dry and vibrantly peppery Bourbon mid palate featuring toffee apple and drying oak. Finishes satisfyingly warm, long and pleasantly peppery with hints of mint into the fade. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Copper color. Rich aromas of toffee, dried fruit, creme brulee, and touch of glued wood with a supple, dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body and a long, honeyed grain cereal, fruit gum, charcoal, and spice finish A pleasant sipping whisky.

Hirsch’s flagship product 'Horizon' is composed of different bourbons with different ages and percentages that vary from batch to batch. Exact mash bills, ages, and percentages are disclosed on the bottle’s back label. Our 20ml sample tasted like a decent proportion of rye was included adding a nice lift to the profile. Vibrant, balanced, easy drinking while possessing a freshness rarely found in Bourbons at this price point, the oak is never overbearing and the focus feels like it's on the quality of the distillate rather than the creation of a mainstream style. Gets better with every sip. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... While the nose showcases primarily grain aromas, including cracked corn and peanut shell, it also has notes of white pepper, dark cherries, brown sugar, and Hershey's chocolate syrup—a harbinger of things to come. The palate is a chocolate lover's dream, rich and tantalizing without heaviness. There's also mint, cinnamon, cashew butter, and well-integrated oak; time and water bring out sweet orange. It finishes with milk chocolate, toasted nuts, and lingering cinnamon. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...Hirsch The Horizon may have roots tied to the brand some might recognize from years past, but the modern-day version starts with an adventure-forward marketing spin that’s backed by a whiskey that’s accessible, approachable, and affordable. Not every bourbon is supposed to break barriers or set records. Sometimes, a bourbon just needs to be solid and accessible. Hirsch The Horizon seems to have that goal in its crosshairs. A blend of two MGP bourbons that may vary from batch to batch both in blend percentages and ages of bourbons in the blend, while maintaining the 75% corn mashbill component as its core backbone, it offers a modern look and bit of detail right on the label for those who seek it out. While it’s a fairly average bourbon overall, its combination of drinkability and price point is what makes it notable. As a result, I plan on recommending it to those seeking an affordable, easy-drinking bourbon on a go-forward basis. - breakingbourbon.com

    Solidly built and well-integrated; a very nice sipper. Editor's Choice. - whiskyadvocate.com

This ongoing release debuted in late 2022 in the US. Distilled in Bardstown and composed of approximately 160 barrels per batch, it's a blend of two Kentucky Bourbons: One aged three years, two Months and another aged eight years. The respective mash bills are 74% corn, 18% rye and 8% malted barley versus 72% corn, 13% rye and 15% malted barley. Elaborating on the name, the producers state, "The Bivouac, pronounced ‘be∙voo∙ak,’ refers to a temporary camp without a tent or cover. It alludes to a way of travel only meant for those who want to truly immerse themselves in nature. HIRSCH The Bivouac honors those adventurous spirits who are brave enough to take the road less traveled.” Tasted from a 20ml sample, the whiskey lives up to its title. This is a 'contemporary' Bourbon in the sense that it leans towards middle-weight single malt; the traditional Bourbon sweetness is tempered by hints of semi-ripe peach and apple with a roundness and mouthfeel that's not unlike some Speysiders. Cocoa, light vanilla, cinnamon and hints of rye at the finish drive home its origins and despite the high proof, no dilution is required. Tasted against Hirsch Horizon, this relaxed yet tasty Bourbon is a welcome addition to the category. 50% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The nose is somewhat tight at first but opens to aromas of coffee cake, fruit cup, and faint notes of cherry, citrus, and dried herbs. The palate is smooth and silky, with light spice, cooked plums, dark chocolate, and cinnamon. Earthier notes of mature oak and dunnage floor keep the sweetness in check nicely. On the finish, pleasant oak, honey, and chocolate. Solidly built and well-integrated; a very nice sipper. Editor's Choice. 93 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...The base bottling of the “new” I.W. Harper from Diageo. Source is “new” Bernheim; no age given. Nose is simple: hard candy and corn. Jack Daniels envisioned that one day his whiskey would be served around the world. In that spirit, owners Brown-Forman have launched a limited edition series. Originally exclusive to Heinemann Duty free, Tennessee Travelers “Sweet & Oaky” features a balanced grain - oak character with medium bodied flavours of caramel, vanilla & toasted oak and a creamy finish. Bottled at 53.5% ABV, it's definitely one for the more adventurous. Master Distiller Chris Fletcher adds “The demands of home life and the operations of his distillery never allowed Mr. Jack to venture far from Lynchburg, Tennessee, but he did have wide-ranging aspirations for his whiskey and a deep curiosity about other parts of the world... He attempted to satisfy both by visiting the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis where he entered his whiskey in its first international competition. He walked away with a Gold Medal and a confirmation that there was a thirst for his whiskey beyond the boundaries of its distribution. We feel that Tennessee Travelers, given its true exclusivity, story and authentic craftsmanship, will have a special resonance with the global traveler and will offer spirits consumers around the globe a new flavour journey to discover, as the world starts to open up again.” Very limited stocks.

Folks who knew Mr. Jack Daniel best also knew his name was really Jasper 'Jack' Daniel. This was the name raised in warmth over a formal dinner toast, engraved on invitations to his home for a special celebration or monogrammed on fine glass decanters of whiskey reserved for his own use. Jack Daniel's Monogram release celebrates America's revered gentleman distiller with a warm, amber sipping whiskey, bottled at 94 proof (47% Alc./Vol.) and packaged in a manner worthy of the formal signature of Jasper 'Jack' Daniel.

Australian Jack Daniel's collectors will be pleased to know that our American and European friends for once, will have a harder time procuring this gem than most.
One Jack Daniel's enthusiast's web site reports:
'Okay guys and girls, here it is, the ever so elusive Jack Daniels Monogram bottle. As we all know, this is the Holy Grail of the new Jack Daniels bottles - if you've got one in your collection, you can count yourself very lucky indeed. According to my sources, this bottle was produced specifically for the Far Eastern/Asian markets. As such, it is not available in the U.S. or Europe, and this is one of the reasons it is so rare and hard to source. This bottle and packaging was designed by Michael Osborne Design of San Francisco, the same company which designed the Jack Daniels Silver Select bottle. It comes in a beautiful leather pouch with the 'Monogramed' letters 'JD' in silver lettering on the glass itself...'

...The nose is thick, oily, smoky, dense, corn syrupy... it's Jack Daniels. Sweet, fat, chewy, various types of burnt notes: toffee, toast, etc. etc... Quite a sweet, fat and toffeed finale. ...Initially, it's earth and fruit. This develops into sawdust, more earth, and bananas. From here, it's green pepper, banana nut bread, and warm corn tortillas over a soft mouthfeel with little complexity. This will work in a pinch and it's great in ginger ale, Coca-Cola, or lighter cocktails, but it's probably best over ice. 80 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Bourbon holds a special place in American culture. Its origins are linked to the beginnings of the country. In the late 1700's , settlers streamed westward taking their household arts with them including the art of distilling. They found Kentucky to be ideal for the production of whiskey. Corn was plentiful and pure water gushed from deep underground limestone springs. It is an interesting twist of history then, that the oldest and most well known name in American whiskey production, Jack Daniel's, actually had it's inception in Lynchburg, Tennessee (pop.351) (what'smore, Lynchburg is designated a dry area!)

Jack Daniels, born in 1846, purchased his own still at the age of 13 and by the time he was twenty, owned his own distillery. His full name was Jasper Newton Daniel, born to a large family (he was the tenth child). Nicknamed 'Jack,' he left home at an early age and learned his craft in whiskey making from Dan Call, a Lutheran preacher In 1904, he entered his whisky in the World Fair in St.Louis and was awarded first prize. Mr. Daniel never married but was seldom without female companionship. Known to be a very kind and generous man, he donated plenty of money to the local churches and charities (and also paid for the musical instruments to start the Original Silver Cornet Band ). When Jack Daniels died after kicking a safe door and contracting gangrene in his foot, the business was successfully carried on by his nephew, Lem Motlow.

Aged four to six years, the distinctive pungent nose and powerful flavour of Jack Daniel's have made it a favourite around the world; and although some find it too assertive, there can be no denying its quality. Mr.Daniel's promise that 'Every day we make it, we'll make it the best we can' is perpetuated to this day with an almost religious devotion.

Little known fact... Strictly speaking, Jack Daniel's is not considered a bourbon because it is charcoal-mellowed -- slowly, drop by drop, filtered through sugar-maple charcoal -- prior to aging, which many experts say gives it a different character. The process, called the Lincoln County Process, infuses a sweet and sooty character into the distillate as it removes impurities. Up to and after the charcoal filtering however, the Jack Daniel's production is much the same as any other Bourbon. We'll leave it to you to make up your own mind!

Following an Unaged Rye in 2012, Rested Rye (2014), and Single Barrel Rye (2016) comes this new expression made from a mash bill of 70% rye, 18% corn and 12% malted barley. It's reportedly composed of whiskeys up to five years old, with many barrels sourced from the higher sections of the rickhouse. Since Master Distiller, Jeff Arnett recognised their own customer base enjoy other styles of American whiskey, Jack Daniels has been slowly making inroads into this growing category. “Our whiskey-making process is so special, and it just makes sense for us to create our version of one of America’s first whiskeys,” he said . “This is rye whiskey made Jack’s way."

...It’s still early in Jack’s adventure into rye making, and with the company releasing a different rye product every year, a lot could change over the next few years. For now, this is yet another rye from Jack Daniel’s that shows a lot of promise, but at some point the company will need to prove themselves with a product that can stand on its own and go up against the best in the rye category. That may still be a few years down the road, but for a company as tried and true as Jack Daniel’s, they’ve been surprisingly whimsical with their rye product so far. While Jack’s Tennessee Rye doesn’t quite shine as bright as it could, it nevertheless still shines in its own unique way. 45% Alc./Vol.

Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey Whiskey Liqueur (700ml)
    Tennessee, UNITED STATES
    $55. 99
    Bottle
    $671.88 Dozen
    ABV: 35%

A blend of Jack Daniel’s flagship old no.7 and special recipe honey liqueur. Smells like dilute maple syrup over banana and pancake - unusual for the genre. Silky, slightly viscous entry leads into mild, quasi-honeyed flavours of golden syrup and creme caramel with the maple syrup making a brief return at the finish. Of several whiskey based honey liqueurs to hit the shelves in recent times this is one of the more interesting examples, but not outstanding. 35% Alc./Vol.

Jack Daniels Sinatra Select Tennessee Whiskey (1000ml)
    Tennessee, UNITED STATES
    $270. 00
    Bottle
    $3240.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45%
According to Alastair Smart, writing for the Telegraph, Jack Daniel's whisky was Sinatra's signature drink.
"He would rarely be seen for long without a tumbler in his hand. The Washington Post even went so far as to nickname him 'The Bourbon Baritone' (apart from 'Ol' Blue Eyes' another popular nickname was 'The Innkeeper'). The signal for party-time at Twin Palms came when Sinatra hoisted a flag bearing the Jack Daniel's logo above the mansion. It was perhaps fitting, then, that Sinatra was buried in 1998 with a bottle of JD slipped into his coat pocket."

To commemorate the half century association between Frank and Jack, the Jack Daniels Distillery have released this special edition. Packaged in presentation carton with booklet.

Tasting note: Deep brassy gold. Offers a classic JD sniff with aromas of burnt orange, fresh sawn oak, dilute maple syrup, vanilla fudge and a peppery kick. The extra ABV makes for full bodied Jack. Lovely smokey oak/hickory key notes hover over latent vanilla, cinnamon and caramel. A tad grippy to finish but rounds off with an attractive sweet Bourbon flourish. A definite step up from the 40% ABV bottling. Try this on its own before drenching it with Coke. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... This new Jack Daniel’s offering is marketed as being “bold and smooth.” It certainly is bolder when compared to the standard Jack Daniel’s offering, with a mélange of corn, creamy vanilla, toasted caramel, bright citrus, and dry resinous oak spiked with cinnamon. The smoothness ends, however, when the oak grip intensifies on the finish. Adding ice does tame the oak, if that’s your thing. Still, I’d prefer the oak be more restrained.

    $1559.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45%
A watershed bottling being the brand's first new mash bill in 150 years (70% rye, 18% corn and 12% malted barley). This follows on from what started with an “Unaged Rye” in 2012. Reportedly at least fours years old (though not confirmed) the barrels are aged in the upper regions of the barrel house where they're exposed to broad temperature variations.

Tasting note: [Barrel 16-7297 tasted] Beaming deep amber colour. Initial whiffs of shellac are subdued by attractive aromas of apple pie, oak shavings, clove and later, peachy fruit in an unusual opening bouquet. Air contact adds dusty cocoa and cool mint. Semi sweet entry leads into a well rounded rye - no sharp edges here, in fact almost buttery in the mouth with gentle spice, glace cherry and peppermint, finishing with Jack Daniel's signature maple-char flavours and cherry notes through the aftertaste. A textural, mid-range style that hits all the right notes. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews...this rye doesn’t disappoint. Butter-toasted rye bread and vanilla, with hints of herbs and campfire smoke. Then fruit…a lot of fruit: pear, banana, pineapple, followed by a bevy of sweets—caramel, butterscotch, and toffee, mainly—with a delightful cinnamon bread finish. This skews more toward bourbon than the Indiana ryes, and that’s a good thing. 90 points Reviewed by: Fred Minnick (Summer 2016) - www.maltadvocate.com

It was once a privilege reserved for Jack Daniel's Master Distiller. Exploring the nuances of whiskey from a single barrel. Today, connoisseurs around the world can savor this experience on their own. Single barrel is another fairly recent addition to the Jack Daniel's stable. It differs in being the product of one unblended barrel, produced in miniscule quantities, bottled at it's peak. It is a deep amber coloured, full flavoured bourbon, stylistically true to the traditional Jack Daniel's Old No.7. Handsomely packaged in a decanter style bottle. 45%alc./vol.

Other reviews... Wine & Spirits Magazine wrote: '(Jack Daniel's) Single Barrel is a rich red-amber color. The nose, surprisingly smooth for its proof, is full of wood and peachy fruit. Its dry, woody, taste has a nice glow but no afterbite. Cut with water, the wood and the underlying corn flavors are more pronounced, and it has a lot of strength to the finish.'

... The Malt Advocate wrote: 'Jack Daniel's Single Barrel was deliciously rich and with great depth......It was nicely balanced too: not too sweet or dry.'

.. Nose: Almost stiffly phenolic: you can cut through the sweet roasty, oaky intensity. Palate: You less taste than eat this stuff... lovely oily middle with plenty of trademark burnt liquorice. Finish: The small grains bravely fight their way through, first rye then malt. But the rye returns with the liquorice for the surprisingly refined finale. Comment: Always an interesting brand.

Further notes... More fruit on this than most Jacks. Still plenty of liquorice and burnt toast. The taste is spicy and immediatly warming. Some real kick to this, with the blows softened by the sweetness of the corn and the surrounding thick oils. Very consistent finish with the sweetness fading, despite some rye input, then oak starting to make a stand. A characterful, rich whiskey, with plenty of corn sweetness and some excellent spice. 40% Alc/Vol 88 points - Jim Murray’s Whiskey Bible 2006

Test your Tasting Ability...Each bottle of Jack Daniel's Single Barrel is hand-labeled with its barrel number, giving whiskey connoisseurs the opportunity to test their own abilities. When you try Jack Daniel's Single Barrel for the first time, note the barrel number. Try to detect the different nuances -- a strong caramel or vanilla presence, perhaps; or maybe the toasted oak flavor or fruit drawn from the barrel wood captures your taste buds. Every batch is different and will present a unique flavour experience.

    Tennessee, UNITED STATES
    $69. 99

    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

First released on the Australian market in 1989, Gentleman Jack is a premium brand from the Jack Daniel's distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee. The formula is based on early trial work carried out by Jack Daniels himself and is bottled to celebrate his whiskey being awarded a top gold at the St. Louis fair in 1904.

Gentleman Jack remains consistent with the original Jack Daniel's style, it does however, differ in being a 'single whiskey', not a combination of whiskies blended together. Unlike any other whiskey, Gentlemen Jack is also charcoal mellowed twice though maple wood, once before aging and once again after. The distillery describes this process in their own distinctive way: 'Jack knew what a single journey through the charcoal meant to his exceptional whiskey - how the coarsely ground maple charcoal mellowed out the harsh oils and impurities that threatened the smooth, warm character of the whiskey. Imagine what a second trip would do, he mused. And so, throughout his life, he experimented with charcoal mellowing his whiskey twice. The process proved so painstaking, he never crafted enough of his new whiskey to introduce it to the world. Happily, he saved the recipe. In 1988, we finally put our founder's formula into limited production, and Gentleman Jack became the first new whiskey from the Jack Daniel Distillery in more than 100 years. No, our folks in product development have never been known for speed. We think a good thing is worth waiting for and, in the case of Gentleman Jack, I think you'll agree, we were smart to wait and get it right.' Suffice to say, the result is a particularly smooth, satisfying and individual drink.

Other reviews... A host of sweet confections—caramel corn, candied apples, toasted marshmallow, bubble gum, and gobs of banana taffy—are reminiscent of a warm summer night at the fair. The palate speaks of orchard fruits, sweet golden apples, and poached pear, as hints of peach and cocoa appear on the clean, enjoyable, and succinct finish. 85 points - whiskyadvocate.com

JD's luxury bottling, finished in charred maple barrels for extra richness.

Originally scheduled for Duty Free release only, No. 27 Gold promises a richer expression of the distillery's original Old No. 7. Crafted to the same standards, 'Gold' earns its name from double barreling and double mellowing. In short, this Jack is extra-matured in golden-hued maple barrels and twice charcoal mellowed. Master Distiller, Jeff Arnett says you should expect "...subtle hints of rich, warm maple and toasted oak on entry giving way to a complex medley of fruit." He added that the double charcoal mellowing process provides an “exceedingly smooth” finish that works especially well with the maple barrels. The extra time and attention required to craft this spirit makes it the perfect dessert whiskey, but means No. 27 is unlikely to remain a permanent addition to the portfolio. If you can find it at the right price, grab one before it disappears for good. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Like opening a lunchbox in elementary school: you’ll find the distinct aromas of peanut butter sandwich with strawberry jam and a smear of Marshmallow Fluff, plus a Little Debbie Oatmeal Cream Pie, and some apple blossom and tea rose. ...There’s no mistaking that maple barrel. It’s aggressive on the nose, offering tons of classic maple syrup and a distinct banana aroma that gives it a strange, almost tiki-like bent. A curious fruity-spicy note underneath invokes notes of raisin bread and maraschino cherries. On the palate, a wave of caramel hits, followed by a load of additional maple character. Spices including nutmeg and cinnamon arrive soon after, followed by waves of overripe fruit. This is a very sweet whiskey, and it only gets stronger and stronger as it develops in the glass and on the tongue. The finish finds notes of milk chocolate and more of that banana character, here becoming almost candylike. Did I mention the maple? The impact of that maple barrel is profound and, frankly, a bit too intense for everyday drinking, culminating in a whiskey that ends up dialed a bit too far to the sweet side of things for may tastes. That said, rabid Gentleman Jack fans may want to pay a bit closer attention to this release. - drinkhacker.com

A Jack that's more robust than most, aged for over four years instead of just three, thus meeting the standards of the 'Bottled in Bond Act of 1897.' The act also requires that the whiskey be a product of the grain of a single season, made by one distiller at a single distillery, and aged in a federal government-bonded warehouse. The act came as a response to the widespread adulteration in American whiskey around the late 19th century. It was an attempt by the federal government to guarantee the spirit's authenticity.

This also honors the era when Jack began bottling his whiskey in the signature square bottle (1895). As usual, an added Tennessee touch sees the whiskey charcoal mellowed through ten feet of sugar maple, a reminder of Jack Daniel's commitment to quality.

Rye whisky was the traditional American saddlebag whisky. It is, as its name suggests, simply made using a larger proportion of Rye as opposed to corn. Rye whisky must be produced at no more than 160 proof and be aged in new, charred oak barrels for at least two years to be designated 'straight'.

Tasting note: Amber gold. Some piercing rye spiciness that's also minty, mustard-like, then the sweeter base notes enter edging the bouquet towards rye-heavy Bourbon. Nice intensity with medium dry flavours suggesting dried dill and spearmint over background vanilla and bubblegum. Peppers up at the finish which is vibrant, warming, minty, mildly tannic, medium long and try to style. Value buy. 40% Alc./Vol.

    $635.88 Dozen
    ABV: 37%

Originated in the 1780s by Jacob Beam, a Kentucky farmer, who operated a grain mill and ground grist for locals - a portion of which was always reserved for the families private use - to make whisky. It was in 1795 the Jacob finally began commercial production, however it was not under the Beam Label. Consistency of style has been maintained by using the same yeast cultures for over 60 years, derived from an original culture made by Jim Beam himself on his back porch. Beam Bourbon is the product of six generations of distillers with only one enforced break in production between 1920 and 1933 when prohibition was introduced to the U.S. It was following prohibition, (during which time the distillery had been shut and sold to the U.S. government) that the bourbon was named "Jim Beam" after the head of the Beam family. To drink Beam then is to taste something of its American heritage. White Label is aged for four years and appreciated for it's pleasant sweet/sour and mellow, nutty character, making it one of the biggest selling Bourbons globally. 37% alc./vol.

Other reviews... Charmingly floral nose with a soft rye undercurrent. Sweet corn arrival then soft oaky-vanilla notes on the palate. Hints of soft liquorice and then much drier mouthwatering vaguely malty tones on the finish. This whiskey has improved enormously in recent years. Still light and easy going, there appears to be an element of extra age, weight and complexity. 85 points  - Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2006

[40%ABV bottling] ...Grain in several forms begin this experience. First it's raw corn kernels, freshly buttered popcorn, boiled oats, rye toast, and cornbread. Great stuff! - Jim Murray

Located on the outskirts of Bardstown, Kentucky, lies the old Willet Distillery. Correspondence is currently pending as to the status of production, but its history dates from shortly after the repeal of prohibition in 1935. The distillery was established by brothers Thompson and Johnny Willett. The 1970s petrol crisis saw Old Willet producing alcohol as an alternate resource for fuel. The distillery closed its doors when the fuel crisis was no longer dire, unfortunately, all the whisky distilling equipment was stripped from the premises.

Enter Evan Kulsveen. Norwegian by descent, Evan married Thompson Willett's daughter, Martha, and endeavoured to bring the family distillery back to life by exporting old stock to Japan and Europe in the late 1980s when the market for Bourbon was starting to boom. The stock eventually ran out and whilst the goal of re-opening the distillery was still in sight, the cost involved made it an unviable proposition at the time. Instead, Evan started purchasing casks from multiple distilleries, masterfully creating his own whiskies, marketed under numerous labels, including ‘Old Bardstown’, ‘Kentucky Vintage’, ‘Rowans Creek’ and ‘Johnny Drum’, amongst others.

Pages on the Kentucky Bourbon Distiller’s website (a subsidiary of the distillery as a premium bottler and vendor of private brands) have indicated that the distillery is undergoing restoration (some twenty years after that promise was made!) Evan continues to operate the facility along with his children, Drew and Brit Kulsveen, continuing the line of prestigious American whiskies. We anxiously await the re-opening of this legendary Kentucky producer.

Tasting note: Copper gold colour with a gold hue. A touch of shellac at first, then the nose reveals aromas of toffee apple, mixed nuts and an enticing array of spices including clove, vanilla, anise and nutmeg over a charry oak base note. A big palate attack yields concentrated flavours of dried fruits, caramel, sweet spices and sandalwood. The mouthfeel is creamy and mildly prickly at the same time, however the whisky maintains excellent balance at this strength. Finishes soft and dry with an aftertaste of vanillan oak, creme caramel and a subtle liquorice strap fade. A big, complex Bourbon experience. 50.5% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Plenty of color, and the nose says it ain’t lying. Sharp warehouse oak aroma puts an edge on an authoritative nose of honey, Indian pudding, spicy hard candy, and old-fashioned root beer, the not-too-sugary kind. Fiery and bold on the tongue as oak roars from start to finish, but the sweetness builds sip-by-sip: cornbread, buckwheat honey, King syrup, and a teasy bit of citrus peel. Long finish as the oak dies down. At this price, let’s keep it our secret. Sourced whiskey. 88 points - www.maltadvocate.com, reviewed by: Lew Bryson (Fall 2015)

A sourced whiskey (8 to 9-year old bourbon from MGP in Indiana). This aims to recreate the flavour of a bygone brand, recently reestablished in 2015 in Washington DC. Comes packaged in a handsome art deco style bottle containing 'triple cask finished' whiskeys, including x-sherry and cognac. Caron Moonin from thewhiskeywash.com explains how Joseph Magnus came to be re-invigorated:
"According to the Washington City Paper, in 2007, Jimmy Turner found a bottle of bourbon in the closet while cleaning out his parents’ home after his mother died. The bottle was in fact a 100+ year-old bourbon passed down through generations. This discovery got Turner to learn more about his great-grandfather, Joseph A. Magnus. Magnus made bourbon, rye, whiskey, gin, and rum. This then led to more investigation, both in terms of family tree research and whiskey leads, to source some similar in flavor profile to this heirloom liquid treasure.

A year-and-a half ago, Jos. A. Magnus & Co., a bourbon and gin distillery, opened in Washington, D.C. The distillery currently offers two whiskies: Joseph Magnus Straight Bourbon and Murray Hill Club Bourbon, both of which are drawn from sourced whiskeys. As with Scotch, sometimes the bottle also tells part of the story. In this case, the distillery has said the design of the custom containers is “nspired by historic Magnus bourbon bottles. The base of this whiskey is supposed to resemble the old bottle found by Turner in the closet. From there, a triple-cask finished spirit was created via “a marriage of bourbon aged in white oak and finished in Oloroso Sherry, Pedro Ximenez Sherry, and Cognac casks." 50% Alc./Vol.

Kentucky Owl's Takumi Edition is a blend of 4, 5, 6 and 13-year-old Kentucky straight bourbons with mash bills containing corn, rye or wheat, and malted barley. John Rhea of Kentucky Owl and Yusuke Yahisa of Nagahama Distillery in Japan worked together to create the whiskey, with Rhea selecting four different formulations and sending the samples to Japan. Yahisa evaluated them, each one representing different ages and mash bills. He then created different blends using those formulations to develop one most reflective of his Japanese whisky style. "This collaboration encompasses not just the art of blending, but the flavors and taste profiles that both countries are famous for in their whiskeys," said Rhea. "The Takumi Edition provides bourbon lovers insight into the flavor profiles sought after by a Japanese whisky blender. As someone who has worked in the industry for several decades now, it was exciting for me to work with a rising star in whisky with a unique perspective."  The Japanese term kaizen — continuous improvement — echoes through the project. According to Kentucky Owl, “Confiscated pays tribute to the barrels the government seized from Dixon's great-great grandfather, C.M. Dedman, just ahead of Prohibition. Those barrels were never seen or tasted again. More than a century later, Confiscated is the first offering from Kentucky Owl that will be available in all 50 U.S. states.”

It wraps up beautifully, with chili-chocolate, roasted nuts, and cigar end. Kentucky Owl doesn’t disclose the ages of the bourbons used in this bottling, but the balance of maturity on the nose and verve on the palate work to excellent effect.

From New York City’s oldest operating whiskey distillery, the first since prohibition. Founded in 2010, Kings County operates out of the 118-year-old Paymaster Building in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. This little gem is described as a "Scotch-meets-bourbon hybrid", aged in a new barrel, yet with a light, smoky, peat-infused finish reminiscent of a single-malt.

Tasting note: Deep polished copper colour. Nice legs. Pencil shavings, new sawn oak, vanilla, orange zest and grilled corn aromas followed by a complex, pure, oily, semi-sweet delivery: Juicy and malt-like in the middle stages then gently tannic, corn-heavy to finish with hints of cocoa, leather and oak shavings. Beautifully textured. The peat remains in the shadows. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Dark muscovado sugars mixed with orange peel, liquorice… and peat reek!!! Adorable delivery: thick corn oil is awash with molten muscovado. The smoke keeps a respectful distance, but is there with ever-thickening tannins; spices grow, the peat murmurs, the tannins throb quietly amid residual sugars… Quite stunningly lovely.

Legend has it that this unique bourbon resulted from malt shortage at the distillery. Faced with a waning supply of malted barley (which makes up 20% of KCD's regular mash bill) a distiller grabbed some peated malt by accident to finish the batch. A year later, the spirit was sampled and the results were so delicious that KCD decided to make a thing of it.

To be clear, this is not a classic bourbon finished in a peated cask. It's a whiskey that conforms to the requirements for bourbon, yet is made with a percentage of peated malt. Obviously, this is a practice more commonly associated with Scotch whiskies and the malt Kings County use for this whiskey was even grown and kilned in Scotland. The peated malt represents 30% of the mash bill alongside 70% New York State organic corn (from Klaus and Mary Howell-Martens at Lakeview Organic Grain).

    ABV: 50%
Tasting note: Deep old gold ochre colour. Dried apple mingling with hints of peppermint tea followed by some caramel / vanilla sweetness. Big but balanced in the mouth with the spirit just gently nipping the tongue. Not as robust as you might anticipate given the ABV, it features bittersweet charry oak, faint liquorice and apple pie-like flavours finishing reasonably vibrant and mildly minty. 50% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Though this new offering meets the technical criteria for rye (a mash bill of at least 51% rye), the sweet, caramelly flavors suggest a high-rye Bourbon—which makes sense considering that Knob Creek is best known for its Bourbon. Expect bold almond, oak, brown butter and pecan pie flavors. The drying baking-spice finish is more characteristic of rye, and has less bite than might be expected of a 100-proof spirit. 92 points - www.wineenthusiast.com

Rich copper color. Rich aromas of spiced nuts, dried fruits, cola nut, and honeyed cake with a supple, fruity-yet-dry medium-full body and a long, zesty candied citrus, pink pepper, anise, and mineral accented finish. A delicious and vibrant rye that is great on its own and in cocktails.93 points

Unlike the Knob Creek bourbons (which are 9 years old), there’s no age statement with this new rye, which tastes relatively younger. It’s bracing, vibrant, and spicy. (The rye contribution is unmistakable.) Cinnamon spice and crisp mint dominate, with charcoal, botanicals, ginger, nutmeg, honeyed fruit, vanilla, and caramel. Warming spice finish. Its dynamic personality should shine in cocktails, but from a sipping, drinking neat perspective, I wish it was a little older like its siblings. 85 points - www.maltadvocate.com (Summer 2012) Reviewed by: John Hansell

No-nonsense, flint-hard nose: slickly-polished oak furniture, cinnamon stick, cracked rye, wet cornmeal, hard candies. Bang! Delicious but fiery, this nine-year-old small-batch Bourbon offers deep toffee aromatics and bold flavor. On the palate, look for relatively dry flavors: leather, cedar, dried orange peel. Beyond single barrel picks: Barrel customisation. A unique approach to the Private barrel program.

Whether you consider it genuinely novel or simply a clever gimmick, this series - which is rarely found in Australia - follows the success of the 2015 distillery-only release of Maker's 46 at cask strength. It's not quite the same as the Private Selection Wood Finished Collection, instead the Private Barrel Program is aimed at retail or restaurant partners. As with any private pick, you get to pre-taste and purchase a barrel. The twist is, you then choose ten finishing staves from a set of five options: Baked American Pure 2, Seared French Cuvee, Maker’s 46, Roasted French Mocha and Toasted French Spice. That's 1001 possible stave combinations. Given the number of potential combinations, not every bottling is going to be a winner. We feel this selection succeeds in taking Maker's in a new direction that's truly engaging.

The finishing staves were 2 x Baked American Pure 2, 1 x Seared French Cuvee, 3 x Maker's 46, 2 x Roasted French Mocha and 2 x Toasted French Spice. What firstly strikes you is the gorgeously pure, bright copper colour, followed by a bouquet that shifts ground and blossoms over five to ten minutes, opening with pecan pie, vanilla, dried coconut and light rye (even though there's none in the mashbill), later smelling more like Armagnac - think dates, dried apricots, brandy cream sauce and dark chocolate. Tasted undiluted it's unbelievably restrained - at least on entry where it hits the tongue pillow-soft. Once again, those classic Bourbon notes of vanilla oak and caramel arrive but, in this expression, half the finishing staves were French oak, which usually means more wood spice and astringency - consequently, it's Bourbon that's a balancing act between sugars and tannin. That also makes it more elegant than most. You've got to work this around your mouth to extract extra richness and / or give it plenty of time to breath. Those sweeter caramel-vanilla notes recover through the finish and aftertaste, mingling with cinnamon, clove, peppermint, dried fruits and satisfying spirit heat. If you're partial to high cocoa dark chocolate, you should love this, or if you just like variation in your American whiskeys, it offers a nice point of difference. As with the best wood aged spirits, we found its sweet spot after 20-30 minutes of breathing.

Commissioned by "The Original Barracuda", Dubai's largest retail wine and spirits store to celebrate their 25th Anniversary and labeled as such, according to the Maker's website, this is a single barrel bottling, however the total outturn isn't stated. You can also expect the mash bill to be the distillery's standard at 70% corn, 16% wheat and 14% malted barley. [55.35% Alc./Vol. barrel tasted] One shipment only.

Maker's Mark is the world's only bourbon made in small quantities of less than twenty barrels per batch. 'Which means', we are told, 'that the distillers have time to be choosy.' Indeed, the producers attention to detail and commitment to quality is legendary, and on a value/quality basis Maker's Mark must out rank almost every other bourbon on the market.

The brand leapt out of obscurity in 1980 after the Wall Street Journal published a front page story on the history of the distillery. Suddenly everyone wanted to try it. Unfortunately, Makers Mark was only producing 38 barrels a day - as opposed to the industry standard of 1,300 barrels a day. Small production, however, was the key to the brands success. Since 1953 the Samuels had been steadfast in the belief that making small batches of bourbon at a time, using winter wheat instead of rye would produce a better whisky. Apparently they were correct. As Michael Jackson puts it in his World Guide to Whisky, 'The defining smoothness is achieved, arguably, at the expense of some flavour because Maker's Mark eschews rye in favour for wheat with which to season the palate. This is an accepted alternative way of producing bourbon but few distillers pursue it; Old Fitzgerald is a notable example.' Furthermore, Maker's Mark use an old rollermill instead of a more modern and efficient hammermill to cook the grain because they feel it is less likely to scorch and impart bitterness. They also don't use a pressure cooker to speed up the process, instead preferring an open cooker which allows more aromatics from the air about to penetrate the mash. The new whisky is matured in charred oak casks for a minimum of six years. At first the barrels are placed on the upper hotter floors of the warehouses. Then after several summers they are moved down to the lower, cooler stories. Maker's Mark is a blended whisky, meaning that different aged whiskies are blended together aiming to accentuate the positive characteristics while masking the others. Finally, Maker's Mark is labelled as 'whisky,' (the scotch spelling) rather than 'whiskey'. This is because the owners and their forebears are Scottish. Today, Makers Mark often shows up at White House banquets and has found a particularly strong following in Japan. The distillery itself, dating back to 1889, has been fully restored by Bill Samuels senior and is now a National Historic Landmark.

Tasting note: Deep amber polished brass appearance. Toasted marshmallow and vanilla in the first sniff. Opens up further with dusty cocoa, new leather and dilute maple syrup like flavours while hints of spicy rye add freshness. Firm, dryish delivery offers controlled sweetness with vanilla, dilute maple syrup and manuka honey flavours. Concludes mildly peppery and with minty rye dominating the finish. Milder than what it used to be, but more rye input too, especially on the finish. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Rich, brilliant amber hue. Sweet caramel, pecan pie, and brown spice aromas have a perfumed fruity edge. A silky enty leads to a dry medium-to full-bodied palate with rich roasted nuts, salt, dried fuits, dark caramel, tea leaves, and pepper spice. Finishes with a bold but balanced wave of heat and spice. Very nice. International Review of Spirits Award: Gold Medal

Surprisingly, this is Makers Mark’s first new product since the distillery was founded more than 50 years ago. It's essentially a variation on traditional Makers Mark, whereby the finished product is transferred in just–emptied barrels containing a series of heavily seared French Oak staves – the number '46' refers to the stave profile utilized, not the ABV - which is left to interact, and season the Bourbon for an additional 2-3 month period. The searing eliminates any tannic bitterness within the oak, contributing a series of spicy notes otherwise non-existent with traditional wheat Bourbon profiles.

Other reviews... - (n23.5) crushed toasted hazelnuts dappled with honeycomb and delicate hickory; beautifully even and well mannered; (t24.5) quite superb: an initially thick, intense delivery which fans oak in directions; excellent weight as those honeycomb notes go into overdrive; a dotting of wheaty and oaky spices but it’s the way the softest of silky and highly complex flavours crash feather-like into the taste buds which cranks up the points; (f23) surprisingly light and simplistic with the accent firmly on vanilla; (b24) some people have a problem with oak staves. I don’t: whisky after all, is about the interaction of a grain spirit and oak. This guy is all about the nose and, especially the delivery. With so much controlled honey on show, it cannot be anything other than a show-stopper. Frankly, magnificent. I think I’ve met my Maker’s. 47% (94 proof) - 95 Points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2013

...It’s not earth-shattering bourbon, however it levels up one of the most iconic bourbon brands on the planet to a really enjoyable level. I’m normally not the biggest Maker’s Mark fan, so I went into this tasting a little skeptical. While the bourbon definitely starts strongest in the nose and fades from there, Maker’s 46 still left me pleasantly surprised. Everything about Maker’s 46 seems to be more refined than the standard Maker's. From the more sophisticated looking bottle, one that breaks away from the iconic square influence of regular Maker’s, to the flavor profile, which is all around an enhancement of the standard Maker’s Mark profile. It should be noted however, that individuals who love the flavor profile of Maker's Mark may be turned off by this enhanced fuller finish. That being said, while I may not stock my bar with Maker’s Mark, I would gladly buy another bottle of Maker’s 46. - breakingbourbon.com
...This is original “Red Wax” Maker’s Mark bourbon that received additional aging in barrels containing internal “seared” French Oak staves. The original Maker’s Mark, being a wheated bourbon (instead of rye, which is typically used), is a rather mellow, easy-to-drink bourbon. The French Oak staves in “46” add firm, complex, dry spices (lead by warming cinnamon, followed by nutmeg and clove), herb (a suggestion of Green Chartreuse liqueur, perhaps?), and some polished leather “grip”, which dovetails well with Maker’s trademark layered sweetness (caramel, vanilla, a hint of honey). I’m also picking up some dried fruit in the background. The seared oak stave influence is somewhat aggressive but never to the point of being excessive... 90 points- John Hansell - whiskyadvocate.com

Maker's Mark haven't been as prolific as other American whiskey producers. Not necessarily a bad thing if your core product is solid. Apart from Maker's 46 and some short-lived variations like Maker's Black Label (the latter only available in select markets), the range has remained relatively steadfast. The Bourbon review (gobourbon.com) explains the motivation behind this new offering - a natural strength beauty scheduled for release in bars and restaurants only. We've snuck in a few bottles for those keen to get a sneak peek of what by all reports is a smashing Bourbon: "When Bill retired in 2011, his son Rob Samuels took charge and he has recently overseen the launch of a cask-strength Bourbon for their legion of fans. The company says it’s using regular Bourbon that’s ready to be bottled as regular Maker’s Mark, and is simply not cutting it at all with water... Folks familiar with the iconic Maker’s bottle will probably think it’s a “mini-me” version of the original due to its similarity in shape, label and trademarked free flowing red-waxed tassels. Maker’s hopes to bring more of the product to market next year and have enough to fill some shelves in retail stores (but no promise of that yet)." Please note: Batch number and alcohol volume may vary.

Other reviews... [Earlier batch tasted] This is what I wish the standard Maker’s Mark would be: more mature, spicier, more complex, and with a richer finish. Caramel kissed with honey provides a base for marzipan, cotton candy, cinnamon, clove, and a balancing leather dryness on the finish. 56.6% Alc./Vol. 93 points - whiskyadvocate.com (Winter 2014) Reviewed by: John Hansell

McLain & Kyne is not a distillery, but a 'non-distiller producer' located in Louisville Kentucky. Founded by well known Bourbon historian, Chet and son Trey Zoeller over fifteen years ago (1997), they often source small unique lots of Bourbon which larger distilleries don't find profitable enough to distribute. Roughly 3-4 different bourbon recipes from 8-12 barrels are blended to create the varying ‘very small batch’ Jefferson's labels (Jefferson’s, Reserve, Presidential and Rye) – a miniscule number compared to other ‘small batch’ offerings that often blend up to 200-300 barrels per release.

    “This small-batch whiskey is a treat” - Top 50 Spirits, wineenthusiast.com

Unlike Bourbon or Rye, which, by definition, must be aged in new oak barrels, US*1 unblended whiskey is aged in a way that utilizes second-use bourbon barrels to achieve a distinctive flavour profile. In late 2013, Michter's Master Distiller agreed to re-release this specialty after a nearly three-year absence from the market, deeming it “just right” and “the best it’s ever been.” Matured in bourbon soaked barrels, no neutral grain spirits are included in this blend. The colour is amber to brass gold. The aromas are rye-like offering powerful scents of stewed apple, cinnamon, vanilla and peppermint tea. Initially restrained in the mouth, the profile builds with concentrated, semi-sweet, spicy rye-like flavours - think stewed apple and a touch of Fisherman's Friend lozenge before winding up dry, balancing nicely with the mid-palate flavours which persist at length, but rounded off by some late sweetness. It's moreish whiskey that some tasters found reminiscent of single grain Scotch. 41.7% Alc./Vol. BATCH L14B98 tasted.

Other reviews... This small-batch whiskey is a treat, butter-soft and loaded with sweet toffee and hazelnut aromas and flavors. The long finish rolls toward dry espresso and mocha flavors, pepped up with clove and cinnamon. 94 points - wineenthusiast.com

Off-market for two years. Nose of caramel, sugar wafers, and a touch of just-ripe nectarine. Sweet/smooth in the mouth, with sweet mint, rock candy, and gliding King syrup flavors slipping all over the tongue, while oak notes provide high spiciness. Finishes with a lingering light sweetness, like a dissolving sugar flake. With all the sweetness, though, it doesn’t cloy. Nice, if not complex. 84 points

    $239988.00 Dozen

Collectors note: This is supplied as bottle only and comes from a private collection.

Debuting in 2012 but not released every year, Michter's 20 year old is the second oldest age statement from the legendary distillery that has seen a meteoric rise in collectibility. Michter's state "While we regularly sample all our Michter's barrels to see how our whiskey is aging, we pay even extra special attention to our barrels once they are over 17 years old. At Michter's we consider 17 to 20 years the "Fork In The Road Point" when certain barrels of whiskey can achieve an extraordinary level of quality. It is these particular barrels that our Master Distiller Dan McKee personally selects for our very limited bottling of Michter's 20 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon."

Although the exact provenance of these early Michter's releases remains undisclosed, bourbonculture.com comments, "2012 was a busy year for Michter’s. Work was in progress for both their Shively distillery, Fort Nelson location and the continual release of both highly aged whiskies from the barrels they sourced at Willett to the new whiskies that expanded their lineup.

That’s why it was shocking to see a 20 year old bourbon being released. M20 would go on to be released every year (with the exception of 2017) in very limited amounts of bottles.

2012’s bottling was labelled “Single Barrel” but was eventually changed to reflect it was a “small batch” in 2016 and beyond. It is widely speculated that the first single barrel of M20 contained Stitzel Weller inside. It may never be known how many more releases contained the holy grail of bourbon in it, but M20 continues to draw a large fan base each year."
An interesting speculation that leads one to wonder what this 2013 release contains.

Tasting note: Deep copper with gold ochre edges. Opening aromas of boot polish and old leather gradually give way to deep scents of buttered nuts and toasted popcorn. Returning after 4-5 minutes of air contact finds top notes of vanilla fudge amid flashes of apricot jam, dilute maple syrup and cocoa. Tongue nipping peppers have barely tamed with extended age in what's otherwise a concentrated yet nicely rounded attack; with delicate bitter-sweetness in the early stages, finding more definition towards the finish as rich, nutty, vanilla soaked flavours enter. Late sugars vie with the penetrating oak. Concludes long, dry and leathery with the paprika peppers driving the aftertaste. If you spend less than 10-15 minutes on this brooding effort you won't be doing it justice. One to savour. 57.1% Alc./Vol.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Michter’s Original Sour Mash was the distillery’s single most popular product. While the “Sour Mash” moniker originated from the whiskey production process of the same name – whereby some previously fermented mash is used as the starter for the new mash to be fermented, much like making sourdough bread – Michter’s Sour Mash earned distinction for its taste, combined with its unique grain selection. In fact, it can't really be categorised as a rye or a bourbon. After disappearing from the market in 1989, this old-school favourite made a triumphant return in 2012 as part of Michter's entry level US*1 range. Our tasting of batch L14B90 tasted found moderate aromas of blackpepper cracker biscuit, dried apple and charry vanillan oak. Mid weighted, fairly lean and dry in delivery with subtle vanilla, dried apple and sweet spice flavours (cinnamon, clove) the finish adds hints of peppermint tea, menthol tobacco and ryvita biscuit in the fade with some late sugars adding length. If you had to classify it, call this a 'Bou-rye' style. 43% Alc./Vol.

Bourbon remains the cornerstone of the American whiskey industry. By law, both Bourbon (and Tennessee) whiskeys must be a minimum of 51% corn. Likewise, to be declared 'Rye' the mash bill must be at least 51% rye. Other grains like barley or wheat make up the shortfall. Regulations for maturation are simple yet strict - the new spirit must be aged in new charred oak barrels. Tennessee whiskey has an additional stipulation: It has to be filtered through charcoal before entering the barrels. Otherwise it's produced in an identical fashion to Bourbon. Other categories include White Dog, Moonshine and single malt American whiskey. The robust, full flavoured nature of most American spirits makes them compelling straight up, as well as a preference in a wide range of whiskey-based cocktails.

American Whiskey is growing in popularity.

Scotch whisky may be American whiskey's inspiration for long-term revival. The steady growth in sales of Scotch single malt and high-quality blended Scotch whiskies has not gone unnoticed in the States. Almost all of the Kentucky and Tennessee whiskey distilleries are now marketing high-end "single cask", "small batch" and older age statement whiskies that have found great success among upscale consumers. The United States may yet, in the words of one commentator, "turn away from foreign potions and return to its native spirit."
